Nymoria scrolled through the various quests available to her, noting that she had completed more than a few in the recent weeks. She smiled at the idea, once more, of how far she had come with all of her work. Between her quick progress through her various professions, the increase in her levels – which had even led her to being able to single handedly take out the three headed dog Cerberus with ease, in a single blow no less – as well as the continuous increase in her funds and available resources, Nymoria couldn’t help but wonder at the change in her life. She still remembered the days when she was barely scrapping by, relying on other players in order to ensure she could eat at the end of the day – a life that she wished upon no one, least of all those stuck in this world.

Her eyes aligned on a single quest, one which she had been avoiding due to the rumours of a dragon within it. Nature’s Treasure, a simplistic quest that allowed her to find a man named Nemo, and be led to his gardens of plunder and wealth. Even the players on the lowest of levels had heard all about Nemo’s gardens, the wealth that could be found within them. That was if one could manage to snaggle the NPC’s guidance to them, and make it back alive. Rumours had reached them quickly of players dying at the hands of whatever guardian kept some from returning, and those rumours had been enough to keep Nymoria away.

That was, until now. She made her decision as she swiped away the menu, determined that her sudden boosts through the levels would provide her with everything she needed in order to survive whatever dangers could be found within the gardens. She figured, at least, it couldn’t be any worse than the form of Cerberus that she had bested. Whether it was simply her being overconfident, or if there were other reasons to it, she knew one thing for certain; the fields and gardens would provide her with the resources she required to not only expand her artisan business, but also to possibly purchase her own house.

How many players have come back from that garden and simply bought a simple townhouse, where before they had naught but a single col to their name. There’re riches to be found there, plain and simple. It’s about time I took advantage of it all. She quickly passed her idea on to Musei, the weasel enticed at the mere mention of finding something of value within the garden – and possibly the small encouragement she made with the hint towards various foods and edibles within the area as well.

She was quick to gather her few possessions, making her way for the door even as the weasel bounded from his small bed and onto her leg, using her form to crawl his way towards the backpack that the two of them had purchased from a nearby tailor. It was a simple piece, made of various cloth which was strengthened by a wood and metal frame. Lightweight enough to not be a nuisance to Nymoria, and shaped to her back and shoulders, the piece gave a resting area for Musei without being overly bulky or in the way. When she’d first seen it, she’d considered it little more than a thin back, similar to ones she’d seen students wearing to schools in the real world. The weasel had, understandably, taken a quick liking to it – furthered only by the realisation that the inside had been lined with silk and various fluffing’s, making it almost as comfortable as his own bed.

A quick glance back, and Nymoria moved through the doorway of her room and into the hallway of the inn itself, determined to head out with the start of the day. She didn’t know how long it would take to find Nemo, but she knew that she would be in a race against numerous other players – each striving to find the NPC and capture his attention before anyone else could.

Nymoria had spent a large portion of her morning wandering from floor to floor, asking those few players and semi aware NPCs whether they had seen the man named Nemo. Various reports had seen her rushing to new areas, only to be left in disappointment when she arrived and found no sign of her quarry.  

It had been with annoyance and a slight desire to get away from her most recent encounter with a less than friendly player on the eighth floor, that has driven her into the tenth. As she had stepped off the teleporter pad and into the cobblestone off the main walkway, Nymoria had felt a cold shiver pass over her as if something were wrong. The feeling was only exemplified as her glances around the area confirmed further that something was out of place with the town. It struck her only a few moments after she’d been standing in the middle of the cobblestone; alone, without any movement in the nearby vicinity, it came to Nymoria how abandoned the entire area was.  

Odd, where are all the players and NPCs? Shouldn’t this area be teeming with vendors and people running back and forth and they head to…wherever they need to go? She had begun walking at some point during her musings, partially through a discomfort of remaining at the teleporter, and partially through a desire to find some proof that she hadn’t walked into a ghost town. Her feet had carried her down various avenues and streets that were littered with little more than empty carts, burning torches and an odd shimmering of blueish glows that seemed to fade the moment she approached. All of it had left her feeling more and more discomforted by the environment, and she quickly found herself wanting nothing more than to return to the teleporter and head to another floor. 

Her desires were stopped, however, when she spotted what was clearly another individual in the distance. Their form seemed to stare off into the distance, as if taking in the view – except Nymoria felt there was little view to take in; the majority of it nothing more than abandoned and empty buildings, signs of a civilisation long left to the memories of time itself. 

She’d approached cautiously, sliding to the side in order to get a view of the individual as she approached. The figure – a man, as she saw the closer she approached him – wore a plain set of clothes and garden gloves, a straw hat adorned on their head. More oddly than that, however, Nymoria noticed a pleasant smile upon his face. A smile which seemed, somehow, more out of place than the silence that hovered over the city. His face turned towards her only once she had come within arms length of him, his pleasant smile not diminishing at all when he saw her. 

Nemo? The question came out tentatively, her hands moving in a slow and hesitant pattern, her desire to disturb the man clearly non-existent. His eyes, as all NPCs usually did when she signed, snapped to her hands. He seemed to consider her words for a few moments before responding, his voice coming oddly to her ears. 

”Yes, I am Nemo. Do you also wish to visit my garden of wonders and beauty?” His eyes seemed to twinkle in response, a sudden excitement seeming to come alive at his question. Something about it made Nymoria even more hesitant, but she gave an affirmation as he continued to stare at her. ”Excellent! It’s been a while since I had a visitor! I think you’ll enjoy what my garden has to offer! Come, let us head out!” 

Without further warning the man began walking towards the edge of the city, his steps confident and assured. He didn’t look back, didn’t confirm whether the player was following or not – a fact that didn’t need to be confirmed, Nymoria’s own pace doubled in order to catch up and maintain stride. Curiosity as strong as her concern, she followed the man’s path out of the city and into a wilderness that she could barely describe.

Nemo kept a strong pace as they made their way across the darkened lands that were the wilds of the tenth floor. The entire area, overgrown from the looks of it, seemed somehow more abandoned and disparaging than the city itself had been. Nymoria found herself, on more occasions than one, sliding closer to her escort in a natural response to the environment around her. The areas that they passed through seemed to be an ever-pressing mixture of deadwoods, overgrown brush, and assorted forest like vegetation; all of it pressing in towards Nymoria and Nemo in an almost threatening way.

Biting her lip, she’d continued behind the man as he led their way through the weaving woodlands, his gait and direction seeming assured and aware of their destination to Nymoria’s eyes. Not that she could tell in the slightest where they were going – in fact, she’d already admitting that without the NPC as a guide, she wouldn’t be able to return to the city, even with her map and compass.

”This is a wonderful area, you know. A bit overgrown, but wonderful nonetheless!” The sound of Nemo’s voice caught Nymoria off guard, and she jumped slightly in response. He had moved closer to her at some point, ensuring that the sound of his voice would reach the hearing aid in her ear – a fact that Nymoria wasn’t all too pleased about, if she were being honest. Moreso now than ever, considering they were in a dark forest with no one else in sight. ”Not nearly as nice as my own gardens and woodlands, mind you. But nice in its own way. It could use a bit of trimmer and care, maybe…”

Nemo’s hand touched upon a nearby tree, the moss and slime covering the edges of his hand as he pressed into it. His eyes, however, showed no sign of disgust at the feel of the tree. In fact, Nymoria would have sworn that he seemed almost saddened by the feeling, as if touching it somehow brought about some misery or pain that he otherwise would have been without.

Nymoria’s eyes hovered over the man, wondering what sort of NPC she had run into and chosen to follow into the depths of the woodlands. She had just begun to question her decision when he turned towards her, his painful look disappearing behind a smile that seemed far more natural.

”Come now, let’s not let sad thoughts cloud our moments! This forest may once have been beautiful. Just because it doesn’t appear so now, doesn’t mean that it can’t once more return to the wonderful place that it was before.” His voice carried a level of assurance and confidence that shook Nymoria, cutting away any doubts she may have had about his thoughts.

Seemingly done with viewing the specific area in the forest, Nemo continued onwards, leading Nymoria deeper into the woodlands and towards whatever destination he had in mind. She followed a single step behind, no longer certain about whether she had made the right choice or not, but realising she had no other place to go at this point.

Somewhere along the way, Nemo suddenly became extremely talkative. His voice carried against the backdrop oddly, sounding both loud and muffled all at the same time. An occurrence that Nymoria placed upon the otherwise abandoned and haunted feeling that the forest seemed to give off as an environment. More oddly, at least to her own awareness and consideration, was the fact that his voice seemed to be perfectly placed to reach her whether she was staring directly at him or not – a fact that she found unsettling, considering her general experience with hearing.

“These are uncommon in most underground areas – and this is an underground area, although it might be hard to tell – which is most peculiar. I’ve tried recreating the environment within my own garden without success so far. But I haven’t given up!” He smiled broadly at his own comment, apparently determined to recreate whatever it was he had been talking about. Nymoria shook her head, uncertain whether she should agree or disagree – not that it seemed to matter. In fact, she’d given no reply for the last fifteen minutes they had been walking and talking – or rather Nemo had been talking, Nymoria had simply been walking along beside him and throwing glances of uncertainty and confusion at him – but that didn’t seem to phase the man in the slightest.

“You know what’s more terrifying? The idea that there are some lands without even the slightest form of vegetation and growth! Have you seen that desert? Dry, arid, and without a proper plant at all!” Nymoria was shocked from her thoughts suddenly as she realised that Nemo had referenced the fifth floor. She’d never heard of NPCs being aware of floors beyond those they were currently on, let alone being familiar with them in a sense that Nemo appeared to have. It did, in a way, make sense to Nymoria that they would know about it – in the information she’d found about Aincrad, it had confirmed that the towers were all connected, that the various floors and lands knew in some passing about one another. Still, it made her feel weird, hearing the NPC so casually comment on a floor it wasn’t currently on, let alone in a way that seemed almost too human.

Her lack of response didn’t seem to phase Nemo in the slightest, and he carried on complaining about the desert floor’s conditions, highlighting the various impacts that it was having upon its own environment by being so harsh and unwelcoming to plant life and the various vegetation that would turn it into an abundant paradise once more. She could hear a true sense of excitement and enthusiasm in his voice, and once more had the odd feeling that the NPC was something more than it appeared to be. A fact which didn’t make her feel any more comfortable or settled, but rather more on edge around the man. She’d come across human like NPCs before, in the forms of numerous brokers and other beings, but there was something about Nemo that bothered her in a way she couldn’t quite pin down. It left a tingling in her body that wasn’t welcomed, but rather ensured that she kept a close eye on the man for anything devious.

“I think you’ll find that my garden is the epitome of perfection in that sense. Its flowing greens are fed by softly lapping blue ponds, lakes and rivers. It runs as far as the eye can see – an eternity of grasslands, woodlands and vibrant colours that are pleasing to the eye. A treasure to be cherished, for certain!” There was pride in his voice as he spoke about the place that he was leading Nymoria to, a pride that made her wonder if he would be so happy about her using it as her own hunting grounds. The quest was designed to provide them with an area that was abundant in everything a player could need to fill their wallets, but warnings had been given to players that still bounced around in Nymoria’s head. Warnings which she was beginning to wonder if there wasn’t some truth behind.

For the first time since their departure from the city, Nemo turned towards Nymoria and showed an awareness that he hadn’t previously displayed. His voice carried an edge of concern, possibly hesitation to it, that struck Nymoria as more and more human. “I’ve not offended you in some way, have I?”

Caught off guard, it took her a moment to respond as she collected her thoughts and registered the fact that he’d been worried about her silence. Or, at least, she assumed it had been in relation to her silence. Her hands moved in response, a pleasant, façade of a smile streaking across her face as she tried to show a measure of comfort and happiness that she wasn’t quite feeling internally.

Not at all. I’ve been listening to your stories and explanations. Much enthusiasm that you show. It has been eye opening. There were no lies in the commentary that she made, a fact that made it both safe to state as well as simplistic in response. Nemo seemed to eye her for a moment before accepting her words, not quite happy with the response, but at least content that she wasn’t outwardly upset with him. As if to try and prove her point, she decided to add a question of her own, thinking about everything that he had told her. You mentioned numerous flora, but what of fauna? Does your garden contain animals of equal beauty to the plants that flow and grow?

“Ah, animals indeed!” His concerns seemingly forgotten, Nemo smiled broadly as he began to tell her about the various creatures that lived within his abode. Nymoria gave up, quickly, trying to memorise them all. She was just happy that whatever suspicions he had been holding on to about her quietness seemed to be a problem of the past, his excitement and enthusiasm having returned as he burst into detailed tellings of the various creatures she’d be able to see, if only shortly.

Their walk brought them towards a cliff face, the rocky terrain leading upwards into the sky and beyond her sight, as much blocked by the trees around her as by the fact that it was still dark enough to make her vision almost useless. She expected them to turn away from the wall, to find some other place that would lead them into the wilds further, but she was surprised when Nemo not only approached it, but placed a firm hand upon it and pushed. Bright light spilled out onto the wildlands around her, standing in clash against the darkness and causing her to squint slightly against the unfamiliar light source.

“Here we are!” Nemo’s voice called out against the dark, his form visible against the light that surrounded him. He smiled and waved her towards him, letting her pass as he stepped aside and gave room for her to head into the light source. Her eyes took a moment to adjust, but as they did so she found herself having exited the woodlands and entered an area more reminiscent of the open fields she had become familiar with on the first floor; an abundance of creatures rushing through them as the winds swept across and around. “Welcome, Nymoria, to my gardens! It’s a lovely place, isn’t it?”

Lovely felt like an underwhelming statement to Nymoria as she stared out across the fields, taking in the view before her with a soft sigh. Everything seemed, in its own unique way, to be absolutely perfect to Nymoria’s eyes. The flowing grasses met with pond, river, tree and brush in a manner that she could only expect from a piece of media. The perfect was entirely unreal, even if she could see it before her and touch it. It was, in a way, a reminder of her current situation in many ways. Softly, letting her eyes pass over the area that she could see from her current vantage point, she turned back to Nemo and gave a beaming grin.

It’s beautiful. Do you mind if I take a look around? She signed towards the NPC, smiling as she waited for his response. He seemed even more excited than she was, as if a child showing off their prized collection of toys for a stranger who had taken interest in them. His response came quickly and with more enthusiasm than Nymoria had seen in the NPC previously, or any other NPC if she were being honest.

“Oh of course! Please, take part in all aspects of the garden! I welcome you to it, and would love to share it with you.” He stepped over and leaned against a nearby collection of boulders, relaxing in a way that bespoke familiarity with the outcropping, before waving towards the open area around them. “Consider this an open invitation to the garden, to be enjoyed as you see fit! Please, go!”

Nymoria left behind the grinning man, heading out into the fields and eyeing up the various areas. She could see small collections of flowers, brush and goods that would be useful in her creations, as well as any number of items that could be considered beautiful in their own stead and piece. Her eyes moved on to the various animals passing through the garden, a collection of beasts that seemed both familiar, and yet entirely different to her eyes and mind.

A collection of alien looking creatures, their forms carried on what appeared to be four, blade like legs and a face that remaindered her of old horror movies, caught her attention. Drawing her sabre, she slowly moved towards them, deciding that she would test her luck against the local populace of creatures and give herself a warming run as she tried out her newly obtained skills.

She moved quickly as she came closer to the group, drawing herself into a short burst sprint as they turned towards her, suddenly aware of her presence. She didn’t want to give them the time to respond, instead launching herself towards them in a sudden blitz of speed and nimbleness meant to overpower any chance that they may have had of trying to stop her sudden leap into their midst.

Her sabre danced around the creatures, trying to parry the various bladed arms and legs that suddenly lashed out towards her. She danced as much as she could around the creatures, trying to avoid their appendages in a manner that would allow her to strike back nearly as much as she was being attack, but she quickly found herself in a losing match against their speed, stamina and numbers. Slowing herself slightly, she forced herself to drop back into a defensive movement, giving ground where she had once been pressing forwards, determined to lure them into a false sense of security.

She grit her teeth as the first set of claws slammed into her shoulder, driving her into a hard spin and tossing her a small distance away to land in the dirt and grass. She rolled quickly, jumping to her feet in order to dodge the next strike – meant to stab her in the back as she laid upon the ground – before leaping into motion once more. A backhand strike from one of the other creatures caught her, and Nymoria felt herself tumble to the side once more as she swore at them in her mind.

Able to roll with the blow as much as she could, she brought her sabre up into a guarded stance, eyeing up the collection of creatures even as she considered her next move. They were dangerous, there was no denying that – dangerous enough that they had cut her health bar significantly with the two singular strikes, a fact that Nymoria knew she couldn’t ignore. That didn’t mean that she was down and out of the fight yet, however, and as she watched the bar slowly increase she decided that she would give them a taste of what they had taken from her. Leaping forwards again, she slashed and cut at each of them, her blade dancing through a wave of patterns as sword art met skill, her body moving faster than it could’ve if she hadn’t activated the weapon arts themselves.

She leapt backwards once she had completed the attack, placing distance between herself and the creatures even as another set of claws launched towards her, barely missing her form as she ducked beneath them and moved to safety. She eyed them closely, looking for any other opportunities as she considered her avenue of attack once again.

The first creature fell beneath her continuous assault as she launched herself back into the fray that was the forms of the things. Her sabre danced around, slashing at each and managing to land a pair of strikes, before she was driven backwards by the responding attacks of the creatures, their arms and legs slashing at her as she tried to avoid each and every single one of them – a task which quickly became more and more difficult.

Even as the shards of the creature floated on the air towards the ground, Nymoria felt another of the claw-like legs slam into her, slashing through her arm and leaving a large red gash where once there had been skin. Gritting her teeth, she disengaged from the creatures and backed off enough to give herself some space, considering her next approach carefully as she noticed that they all stood at half their regular health.

Another quick and hard assault and I could likely bring them down…that’s assuming I manage to land a blow on each of them. My energy is doing alright, but I should definitely be careful of burning through it all… She knew that she was at a turning point in the fight – her own health had been severely depleted to a point that was almost uncomfortable for her, but she could already see that she had the fight almost ended. If she could just strike each of them a single time with her arts, she would be well in the clear.

Taking a soft, shallow breath, she pushed herself into motion. Her feet danced across the ground as she moved to close the distance between herself and the alien creatures, hoping to score the final hits she needed to bring them down and end the fight – and more importantly, the danger to herself that she had found herself in now. Her sabre danced beside her, moving as if another limb to her body, the blade’s silvered edge reflecting the sunlight in a way that was both blindly beautiful, and terrifying to those it danced towards.

She breathed a sigh of relief as the final creature burst into shards, raining down upon the ground in a way that seemed both beautiful and terrifying to Nymoria. She glanced up slightly, taking in her health bar and biting her lip, realising the danger she had been in. She knew it had been absolutely silly to rush the area without properly testing out the local animals, but she had been excited – a fact which, had it have gone wrongly – could have cost her dearly. She tucked away the concern as she knelt down, taking a moment to catch her breath and steady her heartbeat all at the same time. She had survived, and that was what mattered in the moment.

It looks like this place was well worth the visit though. Look at all of that. Her eyes passed over the numbers that had appeared before her as the drops from each creature appeared in her inventory, confirming that the garden was, indeed, the best place to find the plethora of goods that she needed for her continued expansions. Grinning to herself, she glanced around her, noticing a pack of wolves, more of the alien creatures, and a variety of other figures moving about. A part of her wanted nothing more than to rush in and face more of them, but she also knew that there was a danger to that – a danger that could prove fatal if she wasn’t careful.

Best to take it slow, and carefully. You have more than enough time, which means you can easily spend some time just passing through the grasses and rocks, gathering what can be found there. Yeah? She knew it was the logical thing to do, and although it took every ounce of her will to fight against the desire to rush into the fray once more, she found herself settling into the grasses in a calm, relaxing manner. Her hands moved naturally, searching for anything of value that could be found within, all while her head and eyes continued to look everywhere. She had to give credit to Nemo, the area was truly a beautiful paradise, just like the man had promised.

Her eyes stopped as she glanced over at Nemo, seeing an agitated look upon the NPC’s face. She paused in her musings and searching as she tried to figure out what was bothering the NPC, the man’s face twisted ever so slightly in an appearance of annoyance or anger. Not that she could see anything in the immediate area that would have upset him. Confused, and uncertain what was causing his agitation, she decided the best thing was to let the man alleviate himself of whatever problems were causing his current mood, turning herself back to the situation at hand and focusing once more on the collection of goods.

She’d already found more than she could’ve expected when she’d first set out on the quest. Still, as she saw the numbers adding up together, calculating into a larger sum than anything else she’d seen in a singular place, Nymoria couldn’t help but wonder if she’d made some mistake not coming here earlier during her time in Aincrad. She couldn’t figure out why she had stayed away, why other players stayed away, considering the amounts that could be found here.

Sure, the creatures are dangerous. But that was as much my fault as it was how dangerous they were. I ran in not knowing what to expect, not having planned ahead. If I had been more careful, that would’ve been fine. I just need to not be stupid next time, and it’ll be easier. She played with a nearby flower – a soft purple petalled piece that seemed far too soft for what it was – as she considered the area. She didn’t understand, even considering the threat of the danger that this quest had, why more players weren’t flocking to the grove. So many had struggled to find the barest of necessities to survive on a day to day basis, and this place had been held as a treasure trove to be accessed only if you dared.

Her musings brought her to an odd point, and she tilted her head as she considered another angle of the situation. Maybe it doesn’t seem so dangerous now, because I’ve grown so much? I used to be a lot weaker. There was a time when I would fear the boars of the first floor, and rightfully so. Now though…now I’m in a much better place, capable of facing larger dangers…so maybe it’s easier to access this place because it’s not as much of a threat?

There would be no easy answer to the riddle, Nymoria knew. It didn’t stop her from trying to determine it even as her fingers continued to passing over the various nooks and crannies that were hidden within the grasses and brush nearby, her eyes as attentive as they had been earlier. She had no desire, in a way, to actually answer the riddle of what others were and were not doing – that was a problem for those who sought to lead the various levels of players, a task for which she knew she wasn’t quite cut out for. That’s a task for someone who can hear all their complaints, and ideas, and other conversations. The voice in her head stated with a snarky tone, a reminder of her true thoughts about herself. As much as she wanted to ignore the comment, it was a part of her, one which she couldn’t quite cast aside so easily.

Nymoria pushed herself to her feet, wiping her hands on her pants as she glanced down at the grass that had accumulated on them. Her searching for materials had been thoroughly disappointing. She wondered if it were her lack of attention, or something about the garden that made it that much more difficult to find anything. Maybe you’re just searching in the wrong spots. The thought was simple, but reminded her that there was more to the garden than the singular spot she was standing in. It would do her well, she remember, to move around and try other areas if she wasn’t having success with the first one she had stopped at. A simple fact, but one that was often overlooked by frustrated players who wanted nothing more than to collect their goods in a timely manner and move on with their lives.

Smiling in spite of herself, Nymoria decided to wander through the garden a bit and take in the sights, her eyes ever watchful for anything of value that could be obtained and grabbed along her route. She glanced over at Nemo a few times, noticing that his previous agitation seemed to have calmed slightly. She gave a soft wave, seeing his response and feeling a bit better about the situation.

Maybe he was just bothered by something in the moment? Could’ve been that some of the nearby animals were acting out, or destroying something, and he was upset about that. He’s put a lot of work into this place, so maybe he’s upset that I wasn’t appreciating the beauty and exploring it more? It was an odd idea to be sure, but Nymoria didn’t see anything else coming to mind, and found herself shrugging in response to it all. She had certainly come across odder NPCs during her adventures, and it wasn’t hard to believe that the gardening fanatic would be upset that his work and labours weren’t being properly explored, when he’d specific led her here from across the floor. Actually, that brings up another question – am I still on the tenth floor?

She brought up her map quickly, glancing over it and noticing the signifier for the eighth floor appearing, although the map itself seemed to look different to her. Content that she was, at the very least, still on the same floor as she had originally arrived on, she closed the map and turned back to the garden itself, letting her hands entwine in a nearby strand of tall grasses that she had stopped beside. It really is beautiful here.

She’d stopped to collect a pair of onyx coloured gems that had glittered against the sunlight, noticing only as she’d bent down that another gemstones had been hidden in behind the pair. Grasping it and pulling with a smile, she’d deposited the pieces before standing once more and taking in the view again. She’d moved closer and closer towards a nearby pond, and Nymoria watched in awe as a collection of drake like creatures, barely bigger than a cat, hovered over and around the small body of water. Mesmerising in their appearance as well as their movements, Nymoria found herself paused while she took in the scene before her.

Two of the creatures flittered closer towards her, and Nymoria found herself entirely entranced by their entire existence. The reminded her, in a way, of a mixture of small dragon meeting and being crossed with a hummingbird – an image that she never would’ve been able to picture previously, and yet seemed entirely natural now that it was in front of her. She calmly raised a hand towards them, wondering how they would feel to her touch.

Her hand snapped back suddenly as one of the two lunged at her, teeth snapping closed mere centimetres from where her hand had been only a breath before. Shocked into movement, Nymoria had leapt backwards and drawn her sabre, realising only now that the creatures carried not only a health bar, but a crystal that signified their presence as monsters within the field. Shaking herself slightly in frustration, she forced herself into a defensive stance, preparing for the fight that she knew was about to come. She spared a single glance towards the pond, making sure that none of the other creatures had been drawn by the commotion that she had caused.

Content that she was facing only the two creatures, for now, she launched herself into motion. The sabre in her left hand danced as she tried to circle and push the small drake like creatures away from the water, hoping to cut them off from their companions and give herself some breathing room.

It didn’t matter how quick she moved, the small creatures flittered around her like a pair of fast moving wasps, their tiny claws attempting to rake at her even as she managed to push them away with the blade of her sabre. She felt, rather suddenly, the pressure as one of them managed to sink its teeth deep into her left shoulder, forcing her to smash it in the face with the pommel of her sabre in order to drive it away.

Gritting her teeth, frustrated at the small measure of progress she’d made, Nymoria stepped a few paces back to give herself some space and consider her next movement. What little distance she’d managed, however, was lost as the pair came rushing towards her once more, their incessant desire to close the distance with her only making her more and more aggravated. Groaning in response, she instead chose to focus on pressing her own attack, bringing the sabre up and moving towards the creatures in turn, determined not to give them the advantage they were looking for.

Whether the shift caught them off guard, or if pure luck was on her side, Nymoria felt as her blade slashed across both creatures and tore large gashes into their small bodies, causing them to flutter and falter in their own attempt at rushing towards her. Not wanting to give up the advantage she had just gained, Nymoria forced herself to press on with her attack, bringing the blade around in another sweeping motion in an attempt to catch them both with a follow up strike that would, hopefully, defeated them and leave her free and clear – if only for the moment.

The pair of drake like creatures exploded into shards as Nymoria’s sabre stabbed through each of them, dispersing their existence with a single movement that she felt was almost unfair. Not that she wanted them to survive any longer and place her in an even more precarious position, but the ease at which she defeated them felt almost like the pair of creatures had simply given up; an image that left an unsettled feeling in her.

She didn’t have much time to consider it, however, as another pair of the creatures fluttered towards her with an intent to bring her down in vengeance for what she had done to their friends. Or are they family? They all look alike, but who’s to say they’re not just really close in appearance. I may have just killed their friends, or family. She shook her head suddenly, realising the silliness of the internal discussion she was having. It really didn’t matter what their supposed relationship was – they were coming to harm her, and they would follow through with it given the chance. Her only option was to defend herself, as she had continued to do.

Sure, but…I’m also benefiting from their deaths. Does that seem right? She pushed aside the dilemma for another time, knowing that now wasn’t the right moment to get into such a philosophical revelation regarding the impact of her actions upon digital creations. She couldn’t believe her mind had drifted so much, and she wondered what had caused it even as she shifted her weight and sabre, preparing to meet the pair as they sailed across the air towards her.

Another shake of her head cleared the thoughts away and gave her back the focus she needed to meet the newly approaching enemies. She forced herself into motion as they zipped past her, their wings leaving a breadth of a trail of wind across her face as they soared just over her shoulder, barely missing their original mark due to her sudden change in direction. A quick hiss escaped her as she spun on the spot, determined to engage with the pair of them before they could come back for another attempted strike against her.

Her movement must have caught the pair off guard, as she swept around and slashed towards them. Her initial strike missed, flowing over and around their forms. It did, however, force them towards the ground and back a bit – giving Nymoria the room she needed to calibrate and ready herself to rush them again with a bit more insight into the situation. She shifted her weight onto her opposite leg as she pulled back, the sabre in her hand held firmly and loosely in her readied stance as she waited for the pair to recover slightly.

Nymoria prowled around the edges of their influence zone, waiting for the creatures to turn back towards her and begin their assault in earnest again. She knew that it wouldn’t take long; even stunned, the things would eventually return to their consistent attack against her form – as if they had no other purpose in their life other than to try and end her own existence. They don’t. Cardinal made them for one, singular purpose. To fight players. To defeat players, if they can. Or to provide loot for players. That’s their only purpose.

The voice in her head was snarky as it reminded her of the situation, and Nymoria found herself grumbling in response, moving out of the way as the pair of small drakes went soaring by her thighs, their tiny claws reaching for her as they passed into the air and beyond.  The duo chased after her, determined to bring her down in a manner that befit their design and intention, only making Nymoria’s mood fowler as she realised how true the voice had been. She disliked giving in to the voice, and found the annoyance bubbling up inside her as she naturally resisted it, trying to push it away and ignore it, even though she knew it was right.

Slashing out with her blade again, she forced the things backwards in order to give herself some space to move and prepare. She knew she could take them both out if she timed her movements just right. Wanting nothing more than to end the fight, she settled slightly, taking a deep, calming breath as she righted her sabre into place and eyed the field before her. She scanned for any major weak points – both within the pair of snapdragons, as well as the field itself – before pushing herself into motion. Calm. Controlled. A single slash can end this, if I do this right.

The pair burst into shards, leaving Nymoria alone for the moment as she collected her thoughts and considered the difficulties of the world itself. She had become so used to simply slashing her way through the mobs, that she had forgotten something important to her, a promise that she had made following the announcement about their new situation, their new lives. She’d been so focused on fighting for her freedom, that she was becoming the very thing that she had always despised, always hated. You’re becoming merciless. It’s one thing to face these mobs, knowing that you need to bring them down in order to survive. It’s another thing entirely to face them believing they are nothing more than a strand of code.

Her mind roiled as she argued against it, knowing the debate on either side. It was true, the creatures themselves were nothing more than a collection of code designed to do a single thing in their entire lives – but what would that say about all the players? Were they not the same string of numbers, letters and various other inputs designed for a singular purpose? Were they, in their hubris and continuous attempt at pushing forwards, any better than the digital creatures that were placed in front of them, trying to stop the players from escaping back into the real world?

You won’t find answers to that. You’re not going to unravel that sort of mystery, especially here. The only thing you can do, the only thing you should be doing, is focusing on staying alive. That’s all your good at, isn’t it? The voice in her head was filled with scorn, a measure of depression and anger that levelled towards her in a familiar way. Nymoria hadn’t heard it in quite some time, with everything that was occurring, and she wondered what was bringing it back now. She shook her head, trying to clear away the voice without success, its echoes seemingly bouncing around in her mind as she heard it over and over again. [color=#b768a2]As if you have any way of figuring things out on your own. You need someone to do it for you. Just like you need someone to do everything else for you. Isn’t that right? How could you ever do something so amazing, so heroic, as figuring a way out of here?[/color]

The voice took on a sharp edge as it drove into her, and Nymoria found herself hissing slightly in response. A sound sharp enough to draw Musei’s nose out of his pack, his eyes boring into her as they tried to understand what was going on. Not that Nymoria herself understood it.

With little other choice, she pressed hard against the side of her head with her hand, closing her eyes and screaming into her mind as she forced the thoughts away and into the darkness. But not before a single, final comment reached her. Are you even going to make it out of here alive?

It was enough to drive her into motion, her blade slashing through the air as she bounded upon a nearby pair of snapdragons that had been casually floating passed her, their behaviour non-aggressive as they tried to do nothing more than move to a fresh area on the opposite side of where Nymoria had been standing.

The blade of her weapon slammed into something, although Nymoria wasn’t entire sure what it was, her mind filled with the screaming that was driving out the sounds of the voice that attempted to torment her. Her eyes could see the creatures in front of her, repelled by her ferocity as she continued to slash and slam her blade through the air, all form of finesse lost in the momentary rage and fury that engulfed her. Whether they were afraid of her or not, didn’t matter to Nymoria. Her movements were savage, a desire to rip and tear and end the existence of whatever stood in her way.

That’s it. Give into the rage. The fury. The hatred. This is who you are. The voice came from a distance, barely audible above the roar of the screaming within her, barely understandable as she continued to try and drown it all out. Her efforts appeared in vain, however, as she realised she could still hear it. Still hear the voice that edged her towards an almost animalistic action. Slowly, as if waking from a dream, she heard another voice calling out to her, a familiar voice. No. No this isn’t me. Stop. Stop trying to do this. Stop this. Don’t give in to it. Not now.

She shifted suddenly, her balance thrown off as if she’d been struck by something large and heavy. The pair of snapdragons shot by, barely missing her face as they tried to retaliate against the thing that had suddenly appeared and savaged them, if only a tiny bit. Nymoria shook herself, her eyes going wide and her arms shaking as she realised how easily she had lost control; how easily she had become the thing that she hated with a passion.

You hate yourself, not me. You hate everything about yourself. You’re just lying to yourself, trying to hide it. Trying to pretend like I’m not a part of who you are. Admit it. Admit it already! The voice screamed within herself, and Nymoria found it hard to turn away from it, to ignore or deny it. She knew it was true, at least partially, but the suddenness of the reminder had placed her in an odd position. She wasn’t ready to deal with this, not now, not in this field where she had found paradise – or at least a form of it. Much less when she was fighting a pair of creatures determined to end her.

Reminded about their presence with a shock, she turned and brought her blade up as she realised she was still fighting, barely deflecting the claws of the creatures as they slammed into her, forcing her back a step. Shaking from the impact, she desperately tried to bring the weapon down and around, hoping to cut through at least one of them with her more powerful attack.

The first snapdragon exploded into shards, leaving Nymoria facing only its brother – or is it a sister? – as she stepped to the side, still fighting to control the voice within her mind. Confusion, anger, depression, a collection of various emotions that seemed to roil and rage within her as she tried to get herself and the situation under control once more. Her blade was, thankfully, steady in her hand as she settled into the another defensive posture. As much as she tried to ignore the voice and focus on the fight, it seemed determine to pull her attention, even just a little bit.

You can barely fight well against these tiny little things, how do you expect to face anything bigger? How do you think you’re ever going to get to the frontlines, like this? Oh, but that’s right. You don’t want to get to the frontlines, do you? It was snide and snarky, the words cutting deep as Nymoria heard not only truth behind them, but the disgust that bit into her very core. It was her own voice, speaking the truth that she had placed so far down inside her that she thought it would never resurface. A pure self hatred that held nothing back. She didn’t understand, couldn’t figure out where it was coming from now. She felt herself panicking slightly, the entire situation overcoming her in an instant as she realised that she needed one thing – out.

She turned to face the final opponent, her blade twitching as she considered how to bring it down. The thing hovered on the spot, as if hesitating on its approach. If she had been more sound of mind, in the moment, she may have considered the fact that the thing seemed to be showing fear. But Nymoria was lost to the panic, her mind rushing through all the avenues of escape and freedom as she moved with a frenzied step, closing the distance between herself and it as she brought her sabre up and around for a killing blow.

The impact of the small drake like creature slamming into her forced Nymoria’s mind clear. She felt herself thrown – a feat that was, in a way, impressive for the small creature to cause – into the dirt and forced to roll in order to avoid the follow up attacks it attempted to lay upon her. The sabre barely managed to remain within her grasp as she rolled to the side, her motion and momentum carrying her away from the small drake as she eventually came to a stop and leveraged herself to her feet.

She felt herself swaying in place, the fallout of the assault leaving her feeling light headed and disoriented as she tried to remember what it was that she needed to do. The voice in her head that had been driving her had disappeared entirely for the moment, leaving a distilling quiet that seemed almost out of place, somehow.

Watch out. The quick words across her mind snapped her back to attention, letting her raise the blade of the sabre at the last second as the snapdragon reappeared in front of her. The creature’s tiny claws bounced off the steel, redirected away from he as she tried to orient herself and shake off the feeling that the last attack had left on her mind.

Need to focus. Bring it down. Then figure out what happened. Focus. She stepped forward, bring her blade around in a weak swipe to drive the creature back, before she felt her muscles beginning to return to their normal motion; the sluggishness fading away as she continued to move and awaken herself. She knew it was close, all she needed was one good strike against it, and it would be gone. Now. Strike.

Calmness spread over her as the last of the snapdragons disappeared from sight, leaving her alone in the field for the time being. She let out a soft sigh of relief as she dropped to the ground, her body filled with an exhaustion that seemed to spread far beyond just the physical. She wanted nothing more than to simply fall asleep in the spot she had fallen, but she knew the dangers of such an action. Besides, there’s still so much more to do here. You just need to rest a bit…and then maybe you’ll feel better? You’re just tired, that’s all…

As much as she tried to convince herself, something in the moment sounded right. The way the voice was almost too appeasing after everything that had occurred. Nymoria felt a tingle of unease at the sound of her own mind, a feeling which was somehow both foreign and familiar all at the same time. She didn’t like the way that the words were playing with her, and more so she disliked the way that they seemed to be coming from her, and yet from someone else all at the same time.

Am I suddenly turning bipolar or something? Sighing slightly, she laid down into the grass fields, deciding that she could risk disappearing into their midst, if only for a few moments. It was unlikely that any of the creatures roaming the area would fall upon her any time soon, and even if they did, she would have a fighting chance if her experiences so far were of any telling. Just, don’t fall asleep. That would be bad.

She stared up into the sky above her, taking in the blueness as she wondered and marvelled at the entire garden itself. There was something so peaceful about it, and yet she sensed a measure of…something…beneath its core – as if there was some sort of creature just waiting to appear. She’d noticed it when she’d first entered the garden, but had felt that it was just her own desire to flash through the various mobs that were available, tearing into them with the desire of any player seeing easy loot before them.

But now that she had taken the time to rest and relax, she’d begun to wonder if it wasn’t something else in the vicinity. She still felt it, clawing at her, as if drawing her into a state of something that wasn’t her. Her eyes shifted as she glanced around, trying to pinpoint exactly what it was about the place that made her feel different. By all means, the garden was a haven of peace, even the nearby creatures moved in a slow, lazed like pattern of pathways throughout the area. Nothing that she could see stood out of place to her, nothing showed any signs of agitation or darkness. And yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that was welling up inside of her, attempting to draw to the surface once more and release itself.
