Her breath caught in her throat as she recognised the voice, its return a sign that she hadn’t managed to push it away as successfully as she had wanted. Nymoria felt a chill run up her spine, causing her to shiver against the warmth of the artificial sun that beat down on her from above. The wind swept plains suddenly felt less welcoming, less warm and less peaceful than it had mere moments ago.

You didn’t think that all the good things that were happening could keep happening, did you? Did you actually think that good things happen to you? She knew, suddenly, what was happening. She’d lived years with it, nearly her entire life. As the voice continued to drown out her thoughts, trying to overwhelm her, Nymoria realised suddenly that she had been parted from the depressing thoughts for some time – ever since she had begun to push her way out of the depths of despair and make her own way in the fight for freedom from Aincrad. She hadn’t heard them, as much, as she had in her darker days. Which made her wonder why they were suddenly creeping back into existence, now of all times above all else.

Why now? Why me? Isn’t that always what you say. Always blaming others for your faults. Always trying to say its someone else’s fault. Never taking credit for anything you do. Anything you cause. You just blame, blame blame. She wanted nothing more than to ignore the voice. She knew it was wrong – mostly. But, as it always was, it overpowered her thoughts and drove her into the despair that she had once felt. Her arguments, those few kind words that she tried to remind herself of, seemed to float into nothingness against the dark wave of self-hatred and loathing that assailed her. It was a familiar pattern, and yet Nymoria found herself falling into it as if she’d never seen it before.

That’s because you’re weak. You couldn’t rise out of this without the help of others. Just like you couldn’t do anything without relying on others. And look at where that got you – cast aside and left behind! No one wanted to drag the deaf, broken and useless girl around. No one wanted to be weighed down by you. The voice snapped at her as she tried to push it away again, the internal struggle becoming external as her face began to twitch with the effects of it all. She didn’t understand, couldn’t understand why it was striking out now of all times. Everything had been going so well, she had been making so much progress.

No! I won’t let you ruin this for me. I’m doing this on my own! I’m succeeding! You can’t take that away from me! She pushed back at the voice, and at the same time she forced herself up and into a seated position. She needed to do something, anything, to get herself moving again. She knew that so long as she was doing something, she could fight against it. Naturally, she began foraging through the area in search of any gemstones, metallic twines, or anything of value that she could use. She needed something, anything, to prove her worth, to prove her capability. Anything at all, anything will do!

Typical. You can’t even find anything on your own, can you? That’s why you came here. That’s why you rely on the system itself to help you. And even then, you can’t do it! You’re nothing more than a failure, a disgrace! It’s no one wonder no one has tried to save you from this world yet. No one cares about you. It flowed through her with a venom that was paralysing, Nymoria’s hands hovered over the area they had been reaching for as the voice had started. She could feel it shaking, her entire body shaking in response to the hatred and loathing that coursed through her mind. She wanted to fight it, to overcome it, but it felt so powerful, so all consuming, that she felt herself drowning beneath it instead.

The wave of aggression rushed over her, pulling her into a darkness that was so familiar, and yet so unwelcoming to Nymoria. She fought against it, trying desperately to push back, to swim her way out of it even as she was dragged further and further down into it; a desperate fledgling against the roaring tsunami that was within her mind.

The shaking had caused her to fall into a seated position at some point, although Nymoria barely noticed. She had, naturally and reflexively, curled herself into a ball. Her sabre had been discarded to the side, laying in the grass in a way that seemed forgotten. Although she could see everything around her, her vision fluctuated, perturbed by battle raging within herself as she tried, desperately to escape the suffocating darkness that she had once fallen into, years ago. Echoes of past voices, her own voices, returned to her as they tried to pull her down into the depths with a vengeance. Their soulless arms seemed to wrap around her, a picture of her own form being dragged down by various versions of herself forming within her mind. It was all Nymoria could do to shake them away, to try and escape their wrath and hatred and fury.

No…no…leave me alone…leave me alone… Her own voice was weak, barely audible over the cacophony of screams and insults that the false versions of herself threw at her. Nymoria felt herself curling more and more inwards, her arms wrapping around her legs as she tried to resist the pull of the things within her mind. She knew the word for them, had spent years trying to overcome them, and had thought she was finally make success. Go away…leave me alone…just leave me alone!

Her mind was empty, suddenly. The voices gone and the feeling of being dragged down flushing away almost instantly, making Nymoria feel somehow even more exhausted. She could feel herself trembling as the adrenaline left her, her arms and legs heavy, and the desire to sleep coming over her tenfold more than it had following her most recent conflict with the snapdragons. She gently laid herself down into the grass more, giving in to the feeling even as she glanced about and tried to make sense of what had just happened. She knew, in her heart and mind, what it was; but what she couldn’t make sense of was why.

Why did I have a depressive episode now? What brought it on? Is this my mind’s way of saying that I’m being too happy? Am I not allowed to be happy...? It doesn’t make sense.

No answers magically came to her. Nymoria wasn’t surprised. There had never been any sort of magical, instant cure. Never any sudden answer to what was wrong with her, or what caused her to be so self destructive in the first place. Years of therapy, of speaking with professionals had never resolved it, never confirmed for her why it occurred. She would’ve been shocked if the answer had suddenly come to her inside of a video game, although she wished it had.

Maybe this is just…my punishment. For being so reliant on everyone else still. Maybe I’m…not strong enough? It was her typical answer, her typical response to these depressive, downtrodden situations. The desire to become stronger, to be better. To be less reliant on others, and make her own way in the world. It was the one thing that had kept her going, for so long. And yet now Nymoria wondered if there was even any point. She wasn’t going to be the greatest player leading the charge against the floor bosses; she would barely even be welcomed into the groups that were pushing, constantly, towards freedom. Wouldn’t it be better to just give up?

She rolled to a sitting position, noticing for the first time that she’d lost her sabre a few steps away. She willed herself to obtain it, to retrieve it and return to the fighting she had been doing until the episode had come over her. She felt her hand twitch slightly, but no more movement came from her as she was overwhelmed by the exhaustion that had torn through her. Sighing, she closed her eyes, trying to recover some of the enthusiasm and energy she had when she’d first arrived.

Time passed as she had sat with her eyes closed. Nymoria wasn’t sure if she’d fallen asleep or not, but when she opened her eyes, she noticed a pack of wolves travelling nearby, eyeing her with an almost hungry twinkle to their gaze. She glanced around, noticing that the time of day hadn’t changed very much, and assumed that she hadn’t slept long at all, if she had slept.

I am feeling a bit better though. She managed to stagger to her feet, grasping the hilt of the sabre as her attention turned back to the nearby wolf pack. It had slowly begun drifting closer to her, and Nymoria noticed once again how they seemed to be eyeing her. They’re going to come and attack me. I need to be careful.

Almost as soon as she’d had the thought, two of the creatures had split off and rushed towards her, their forms flowing across the ground as Nymoria realised they were covered in brush and flora, as much a part of the woodlands as they were wolfkin. It was a quick thought that passed through her head, gone in an instant as her reflexes took over and she raised her blade in preparation of the clash that was about to occur.

The ring of sabre meeting wolf’s teeth echoed in Nymoria’s ears as she deflected the first assault of the pair, driving them both off to the side and around her. Her feet shifted across the ground, determined to keep them as much in her sights as she could, even as they worked to flank her. She had a momentary pause of concern as she realised the remainder of the pack would be behind her – even if only momentarily. But as she came around again, forcing the pair into a position where the rest of the pack was more obvious, she felt in control once more.

The feeling of depression, the depths of her mind pulling her away; all of it was gone – lost as she once again entered the conflict for her life. Fighting, where she could fight back. Flashes of steel and green moss coming together as her blade slashed through the air and flesh of the creature in front of her. Pain – her mind’s own creation, and yet existent nonetheless – as the wolf’s teeth found purchase in her arm, driven away only by the pommel of her sabre slamming into its eye.  

As the small battle raged on, Nymoria’s blade flashing silver against the white and green of the wolf’s teeth and hides, she moved closer and closer to the rest of the pack, slowly being driven into their midst. She had no doubt that it was all on purpose, the pair driving her into the remainder in order to overwhelm her and bring her down – a fact that she wasn’t about to let happen.

Sidestepping another leap, she moved between the pair of wolves, unleashing with a flurry of half-feinted strikes meant to do nothing more than drive the pair apart and around, leaving her an opening to retreat through as she prepared herself for another savage onslaught of strikes and deflections. The wolves, in contrast to the snapdragons, moved in a coordinated manner. Similar to those she had seen in the real world – or, at least in films of the real world. They’re dangerous, but they’re not overly powerful. If I can overwhelmed them one or two at a time…

The sabre tore through the first forms of the wolves and left Nymoria standing in a rainbow of shards cascading to the ground, her blade levelled as it wavered in the air from the force of the strike. She had easily cut through them, a feat that would’ve been far more difficult for her months ago – and yet somehow she found herself feeling empty at the accomplishment. As if it weren’t real; not something that she had completed, but rather something that she had stolen away.

Shaking off the feeling, she heard the sounds of something slamming into the ground behind her, turning just in time to feel as two more wolves slammed into her from behind. She was forced to the ground, barely managing to roll around in order to have her back to the ground itself – the blade in her hand slamming to the ground almost uselessly as her right arm came up to protect her face. She could feel as the wolves tore into her, tearing at cloth and flesh equally as they determined to tear her apart.

Through some form of luck on her part, Nymoria managed to get her feet underneath the wolves, pushing with all her strength and launching the two of them up into the air slightly – just enough for her sabre’s blade to slash upwards and tear into the underside of each of them. A sudden howling, and the pair had fallen back slightly, putting some distance between them and Nymoria as they felt the bite of the blade. No stopping. Press. Finish them.

She forced herself to her feet, using the momentum to push in towards the pair of wolves and retaliate against their sudden attack. Her sabre blade tore through the air as it aimed to cut the pair of creatures down. Almost as from a distance, she felt the calmness inside herself – no anger, no frustration, simply a desire to live, to overcome the challenge she was facing. I just need to finish them. Then I can live.

The wolf pair dispersed into a collection of shards that, once more, rained down upon the ground before disappearing from existence. Nymoria had long since gotten used to the death of creatures, players, and everything else within the game – something that she should’ve been more disturbed by, if she’d stopped to think about it. Instead, she turned to face the remainder of the wolf pack, watching as they scurried away from her suddenly. She sighed softly as they did so, knowing that she wasn’t in a great place to be fighting anyone else at the moment, and wanting nothing more than to take some time away and relax a bit.

Maybe take some time to forage the area somewhat, avoid combat for a time? She glanced up at the sky, noticing that the artificial light that was their sun had moved slightly. Just enough that it was clear the day was moving onwards for them, passing into a realm of afternoon as the minutes ticked by. Nymoria had already spent more time than she had expected within the garden, hours having passed by quickly as she fought for her life. Nemo has been patient, waiting by the entrance and watching. I wonder…

Her eyes turned back towards the man with a stark realisation that he had moved only slightly since her arrival. That wasn’t to say that he had been entirely motionless, or void of any changes. The scowl across his face was apparent even from this distance, and Nymoria found herself chilled by the appearance of it, wondering what had upset the man so much. She glanced around, looking for any signs of what could possibly have him so enraged, but came up short without any sort of conceptual idea.

Maybe I should take it easy for a bit…maybe he’s concerned about me? The fact that his animals have been fighting me may have him angry…No one likes to have their guests in danger, right? With a shrug she accepted the idea, having nothing better to go on in the moment. It wasn’t a perfect excuse, in fact it was barely a thread thin excuse, but it was all Nymoria could think of in the moment about the odd behaviour. Her eyes passed over the nearby area as she looked away from Nemo and began searching for anything of value, hoping that she wouldn’t have to get up and move too far to find her goods.

She spotted a pair of golden gemstones in the distance, glittering against the reflective light that shone down the from sky above. She wanted to get up and grab the pair, and yet her body failed her – collapsing against her will as she felt the exhaustion soar through her and the muscles tensing. Even within the game’s system, Nymoria had found that her body felt almost real in some senses; she knew it was nothing more than her mind’s attempt to adapt what was, with what should be, and yet she found herself behaving more and more realistic with each passing day.

Just take a few moments to rest, that’s it…then you can get up and get them once everything stops shaking. She almost laughed aloud at the thought, before deciding to lay back into the grass and enjoy the sunlight shining down upon her. It had been some time since she’d taken a moment to relax. Smiling at the thought of it, she pulled her hands back behind her head, closing her eyes slightly in order to avoid the blinding effect it had upon her retinas. It was calming, laying there, taking in the sunlight and not having to worry about anything in the moment.

Time passed slower as Nymoria sank into the feeling of relaxation. The warmth was gentle on her skin, and although she felt the edges and after effects of the depressive episode, Nymoria had to admit that she was feeling relatively well all things considered. Her eyes flicked to the nearby area where she had spotted the gemstones earlier, and she felt the gnawing drive to go and collect the items, to do something, rather than simply sitting around. Fine, five more minutes and then I’ll get up and get them. She promised herself even as she felt the energy draining from her further. She knew that she would have to force herself up shortly, or risk remaining in the position for the remainder of her time within the garden.

She sighed as she rolled to her side and up into a crouched position, swaying as a bout of dizziness came over her and caused her to close her eyes for a moment. She steadied herself with a hand on the ground, waiting for the spell to pass before slowly opening her eyes once more. She wanted nothing more than to shake away the feeling, but knew that if she were to move too suddenly or too aggressively, she could very well throw herself off balance and collapse onto the ground once more.

Maybe I pushed myself a little bit too hard… She grinned at her own joke, the humour somewhat lost in the moment as she swayed once more. There was no doubt in her mind that she had pressed herself a bit harder than she’d meant to in her excitement. And then the whole…episode thing after… She winced at the thought, knowing that she needed to be more careful. She’d grown, that was true, but she was still far from the strongest, most capable player in the game. In fact, she knew that she still had a long ways to go – there was no doubting that fact. Which means not pushing yourself into a point where you could kill yourself. Literally. She hated how right the voice was, and simply nodded in agreement.

Feeling herself more levelled and capable, she stood and moved over to where she had first spotted the gemstones. A quick search of the area confirmed for her that she had either been imagining their appearance, or they had disappeared while she had been fighting not to keel over and collapse. Although wanting to be frustrated about it, she felt calm and accepting of the fact that she had missed out on a pair of nice additions to her collection; something that would’ve impressed her, had not everything early occurred.

I’m almost ready for another hunt, if I play this well…for now though, let’s just keep searching for something in the garden that’s worth using. I’ve got time, and no need to push it any further or faster than necessary. She’d glanced up at her gauges, noticing the HUD’s display as she looked towards the sky once more. She wanted to rush in, to fight something else, to become stronger with each passing moment – but she also knew that there was a danger to rushing forwards foolishly. Especially seeing as she was alone here, with no one to watch out for her but Nemo. And he hasn’t proven overly helpful at all.

It turned out that her foraging wouldn’t be in vain, as Nymoria came across a collection of small blue gemstones entwined in a natural wrapping of what seemed like golden twine. She’d carefully and gingerly picked up and stored the items as she glanced around the fields once more, trying to determine what her next steps would be. She could feel the exhaustion of the day quickly catching up with her, and she wondered if she shouldn’t look at heading home soon.

Soon. But a bit more work here wouldn’t be wasteful. I’ve already collected a lot – no small thanks in part to Musei’s help – but there’s still more that I could get. Now is the time to let a touch of greed come in, so long as I control it. She could see the wolf pack slowly making its way back towards her, and Nymoria knew that her decision was made. With the creatures seemingly determined to dog her every movement, she decided that she would give them what they wanted.

Matching her pace and angle to their own, she began moving towards them, taking a slower and less direct route than she had done earlier. Her eyes passed over the various areas of the fields, making sure that no other groups of creatures had made their way into the area that Nymoria was passing through. The last thing she wanted was to find herself flanked from behind again.

They seem to work in pairs, these wolves. That’s fine…so long as they stay like that, I can take them. It’s only really dangerous when they come as a whole group – and there they go. She watched as a pair of them broke off from the main pack, turning suddenly and rushing towards Nymoria with an obvious intent. She levelled her sabre, bringing it up into a defensive stance as she decided to wait for the beasts to come to her. There was no reason to charge them, to put less distance between herself and the main pack, if she didn’t need to do so.

The wolves shot passed her as Nymoria brought her blade up to meet them, both groups missing their targets by a mere hair’s breadth of spacing. She spun even as she noticed them passing by her unscathed for the most part, turning to meet them on the rebound that she knew would be coming. A flash of claw and tooth greeted her blade, and Nymoria found herself once more pulled into the fray of conflict as the pair attempted to overwhelm her defences and slice into her.

The flurry of the fight drowned into Nymoria, and she found herself entirely enveloped in the chaos of it all, seeing the small micromovements of her two opponents even as she retaliated and fought back against their own strikes and slashes. From the sides of her vision she could see the consistent movement of the nearby pack, the remainder of the creatures circling slowly closer, as if trying to determine their own desire to rush in and help their brethren.

Not that Nymoria was going to give them the chance. She shifted her posture and movements, sliding around to the side before unleashing a flurry of feinting strikes at the flanks of both wolves, driving them further away from the pack in an attempt to keep the two groups from meeting up. I learn. I’m not going to make that mistake again.

The pair snarled as they backed off, driven away by the sabre in Nymoria’s hand, and the danger it presented. She could already see the pack shifting in the distance, trying to adjust its own movement in order to close in on her – but Nymoria could see that she had taken them by surprise, and that it would be some time yet before they were able to catch up.

Perfect. Now I can focus on these two for the moment. She placed another round of feints into her movements, driving the pair even further back as she looked for the path of her real attack. She spotted it only moments later, noticing how the weaker of the two was balancing on its hind paw just a little bit too much. More pressure and it may give in beneath it.

One of the two wolves was destroyed beneath her assault, the other managing to just barely pull back and avoid her attempt to defeat them with the under handed slash at their bellies. Given the freedom of movement, however, she managed to roll away and return to a guarded stance, ready to face off against her singular opponent. In the distance, she could see as the remainder of the pack continued to press in towards her, hoping to catch her unawares as she tangled with their single remaining brethren.

I just need to take you down, and then I can deal with them. Nymoria’s sabre shifted in her hand as she prepared to move and engaged the lone wolf, knowing that the pack was drawing closer with every passing second. She didn’t want to waste time that could cost her in the long run, but she also had no urge to rush into danger needlessly. What’s that?

A shift of movement to her left caught her eye. She turned to see another pair of wolves rushing from the far side to join the solo companion. Shit. They must have flanked me earlier when I was busy dealing with these two…smart creatures after all. She bit her lip as she came to realise the danger she was in, suddenly. There was no escaping it now, though, the pair of them having come close enough that they would be within leaping distance before Nymoria could do more than balance herself to greet them. At the same time, she could see that the remaining solo wolf had moved to attack her at the same time.

Alright, fine. Let’s do this. She moved forward a step, preparing herself as she levelled her blade in front of her. She knew she needed to time it right in order to not be overtaken by their teamwork. Her eyes barely moved as she studied all of them and the area at once, small movements caught as she considered her approach against them in turn. There. She moved suddenly as they reached the point of leaping, seeing a small space beneath their path that would allow her to – hopefully – dive beneath them and strike them from below once more.

Her feint worked perfectly as she slid beneath the trio, the blade managing to catch two of them in a harsh upwards cutting motion before she had passed on and beyond their reach. She wasted not time in forcing herself into a standing position and turning to face the remaining two wolves, their original hard leap into conflict suddenly halted as they seemed uncertain about the prey standing before them. Blade in hand, Nymoria saw that they were suddenly reluctant to rush forward to greet her – as if there was a touch of fear that she had placed into their very cores.

They’ve never acted like this before…what’s going on? Nymoria found herself hesitating in place as she tried to figure out exactly what was going on. The wolves had begun to circle around her, their movements still carrying a level of hesitation and uncertainty that seemed extremely out of place to Nymoria. Why do they seem to be afraid? They shouldn’t be acting like…wait, where’s the rest of the pack?

She shifted to her side slightly, keeping the pair she had been fighting in sight while attempting to locate the remainder of the pack that had once been circling around her, waiting for their own opportunity to join the fight. It took her a few moments, but when she did spot them she was surprised to find that they had retreated away from the fight itself, their attention apparently pulled from her towards something else. What the…did I fall out of their zone of influence? But…they were coming right towards me? What’s going on?

A shift in motion from the pair of wolves drew her back into the moment, and Nymoria found her concern regarding the pack’s change dropped for the moment as she raised her blade in order to meet the sudden charge. For the time being, she would simply have to fight the pair and defeat them, then figure out what had happened with the pack, and everything else going on.

The shattering of shards confirmed another struck down creature as Nymoria glanced to the side, once more looking for the movement of the wolf pack that had been dogging her only moments before. She could see her opponent backing off slightly, the death of its friend seemingly causing it to retreat in either fear or concern for its own safety, or perhaps some other reason that Nymoria couldn’t quite place in the moment. Where are they…?

She finally spotted them, a fairly decent distance away and moving even further from her position. She paused in place, trying to take in the change in their behaviour. She had never seen a mob group leave a player alone before, regardless of how many had been destroyed before it. The behaviour seemed entirely out of place, and it made Nymoria wonder even more what was so different about the garden, compared to the rest of the world of Aincrad.

The impact on her side caught her unawares, shocking her from her thoughts as the teeth of the wolf drove into her torso and began to shake in an attempt to tear her apart even further. Crying out in as much surprise as pain, she slammed the pommel of the sabre into its face repeatedly until it had dislodged itself from her and leapt backwards slightly.

Alright…focus on you first. Fine. Nymoria swayed on the spot as she regained her balance, using the momentum to suddenly push herself forward towards the creature. She brought her blade up and unleashed a flurry of strikes in an attempt to catch it with just one, hoping to bring it down quickly and give her the freedom from its presence required to consider everything that had occurred within the garden itself.

She released a soft sigh as the final wolf disappeared in the ever typical shower of shards that represented the final moments of any creature’s life within the game. It was an oddly beautiful and terrifying image, when Nymoria took the time to think about it. Not that she would in this moment, her eyes snapping towards the distance where the wolves had begun to retreat. Their behaviour had been odd, pulling Nymoria’s attention more often than she would’ve liked to admit to during the fight. Now though, with the fight over, she knew that she could focus more on them and figure out – or at least try to figure out – what was going on.

Maybe it’s nothing more than they fell out of the zone of influence they need to remain on target…? Her thoughts had been racing, and as time had passed and no other answer came to her, she had grasped at the only thing that made any sort of sense. Her eyes had traced the path of the pack into the distance as it slowly disappeared from her visibility, taking with it any answers she may have hoped to gain. She’d glanced around only twice, confirming that no other creatures had been drawing near enough to threaten her. Giving up only once they had entirely disappeared from sight, Nymoria had turned back to look around the remainder of the garden, trying to figure out what else to do with her remaining time.

Well, I’m here…I might as well look to see if there’s anything else worthwhile. She glanced at the nearby brush and grasslands, figuring that if there would be anything hidden away, it would likely be within those areas. She’d had limited success previously with her foraging attempts, but she knew that she was tired – nearly out of energy – and needed a break from the consistent fighting that was occurring. Even if I don’t immediately find anything, I can at least say that I tried. That has to count for something.

Determination set once more, Nymoria moved towards the grassier areas, sheathing the sabre as she went only once she had confirmed that she was alone in the area. She still felt uncomfortable about the odd actions of the wolves, but with nothing around she knew there was no point in holding onto the weapon and hindering her ability to look. So long as I keep an eye out, I should be fine…

Nothing had caught her eyes as she had passed through the area, the entire collection of grasses covering the ground to a point that she couldn’t see the ground beneath without bending them harshly – an action that was both tedious and tiresome to complete over large stretches of area. Sighing as she stood up again, knowing she was dismissing the idea of searching within the area that she had begun with, she looked around at the other areas of the garden in an attempt to find somewhere that might prove to be more worth her while in searching for the gemstones and metallics that were most beneficial to her work.

I need somewhere more rocky, rather than grassy. Gemstones are just rocks that are pretty, right? So I need to look for somewhere…like that, maybe? Her eyes had stopped on a nearby collection of rocks that stood up from the surrounding grasslands. It wasn’t mountainous or quarry like by any means, but compared to the otherwise flowing fields of green and varied colours of flowers, it seemed like Nymoria’s best option for finding the materials she used in her craft. Alright, let’s give that area a try, and if there’s still no success…we can call it a day. It’s already been super profitable.

She moved across to the rocky area, carefully watching her step as she went. Small pathways had been cut in the grass, and she eventually found herself wandering across slabbed stones rather than dirt, a welcome change if she were to be truthful. Alright, one last try…promise. Then we can head out, no matter what we do or don’t find. Yes? She nodded even as she knelt down beside the rocks, determined to find something worth her while.

Nymoria grinned broadly as she found the collection of black and blue gemstones, their colours swirling in an odd way that seemed to only make them more beautiful as she pulled them from the crevice that they had been hidden away within. Her grin only widened as she saw the small collection of col that had been hidden away beneath them, making her wonder – if only briefly – if it was meant to be some hiding hole that Nemo had forgotten about.

Whatever the reason for it being here, it’s mine now. She had pocketed away the materials and money before standing up once more, her eyes shifting towards where she had come into the garden. She could see Nemo standing off in the distance, still where he had stopped when they had first arrived. Something about his stance felt weird to Nymoria, and she found herself suddenly wondering if there was something wrong with the whole situation. Her mind raced as she tried to figure out what was going on, and it took her a moment before it clicked in her mind. He seems angry. Why would he be angry, though?

She slowly made her way back towards the area, her hand naturally hovering towards her sabre as she tried to piece together what about the whole situation could possibly have upset the man who had led her here. Her eyes flittered around as she remembered the few rumours she had heard about the garden – forgotten until just this moment – about the dangers that it presented to those players who sought it out. Maybe there’s a growing threat, which has Nemo agitated?

As she approached the man, she felt her skin prickle in response to some unseen threat. She shifted her right hand slightly, signing out towards Nemo as she came close enough for the words to be registered by the NPC. Nemo? Is everything okay?

“You come here, and you take everything! You take everything that isn’t yours! Return it to me!” Nymoria stopped in her tracks, the harsh tone of his voice and the obvious rage boiling over inside him making her aware of something else – his form was changing. She watched in a mixture of horror and awe as the man morphed into what was clearly meant to be some sort of drake, the health bars appearing almost as quickly as its form did. “You will return everything you stole, or you will not leave here!”

Nemo’s sudden lunge towards her had almost caught her off guard, but Nymoria’s concern about the change in the feel of the environment had been enough to give her the chance to both draw her sabre, and roll out of the way as the face of the large drake slammed into the ground where she had been standing mere moments before. Shit! Move! She had bounded up on her feet and rushed away from the spot she had stopped in, barely missing another strike from the drake as it had reeled its tail around and slammed it into the ground.

The vibration in the air struck her as a growl from its throat confirmed for Nymoria that she would have to face the creature, there would be no talking it down. She could almost sense the anger reverberating from it as Nemo’s form continued to chase after her, giving her no chance to retreat or rush from the fight – a fact that Nymoria found she could use to her advantage in the moment. As his head rose once more to descend and attempt to consume her form, she leapt to the side only slightly, letting her blade trail upwards and catch the side of the cheekbone on his face – the stun tearing through its form and forcing it to remain still for a few seconds as she stepped away from its fore, and off to the side slightly.

It wasn’t much of a retreat, but it gave her the movement she needed to get out from its immediate range of assault, and to recalibrate herself in preparation to strike more thoroughly. She hadn’t expected to be fighting the man when she’d arrived firstly, but now that she saw the danger that other players had faced, Nymoria found herself oddly calm. He’s no stronger than anything else I’ve faced here. At least…I don’t think he is. I can hold my own here, and come out victorious if I’m careful. She nodded to herself as she saw the drake start to move again, her own body reacting accordingly as she pushed herself into motion once more. She would meet the drag with blade and fury, knowing that only one of the two would come out of this alive.

The drake was weakening. Nymoria could see it even as she’d dodged out of the way of another collection of strikes, the head and tail moving in a synchronous manner that had become easy to read, and even easier to dodge if she only timed it correctly. If she was entirely honest, it felt like the deadly dance was one that Nymoria could enjoy in a way – the continuous movement allowing her to release herself from her thoughts and into a simple dance of dodging and parrying. If it hadn’t been so dangerous to her own continuous existence, she would have called it almost peaceful, in an odd way.

Almost. Watch for the opening. Now move. Now. The words were a mantra within her mind as she moved. Her previous concerns, the worry, the depression and darkness, all of it fell away beneath the mantra. Only a single goal remained, only the dance with the drake kept her alive. Opening. Go.

She stepped forward and drove her blade upwards, bringing it down in a soft pull as it pierced the underbelly of the drake, causing it to rear back and roar in pain. She felt a single moment of pity for the creature – a man once, who had led her to this oasis of beauty and splendor, reduced to the thing she had to face now. Through the pity of it all, she knew that she needed to defeat the thing, needed to come out victorious. It was enough to drive away the feelings, but not before a single, final thought passed through her mind. I’m sorry, Nemo.

There was a flash of light as her blade slammed into the side of Nemo, once more scoring a direct hit against the drake and causing the large health bar above it to drop significantly. Nymoria readied herself, leaping backwards as she assumed that it had begun to transform once more into an even more dangerous form. The grip on her hilt tightened as she positioned herself and waited, her eyes squinted against the light as the thing before her shifted and reformed itself once more, leaving her partially blinded in the moment.

“You’re so strong…” The words caught her off guard, as much due to the fact that she could easily hear them, as to the fact that they had been heard at all. She blinked twice, before seeing the form of the man once more before her, an embarrassed and defeated look upon his face as he knelt in front of her, clearly exhausted from the fight that had just occurred. “I’m…I’m not used to being beaten like that…you put up a good fight…a strong one, for sure.”

Nymoria blinked again as she tried to figure out what was happening, the blade of her sabre quivering as she held in place. She could feel the muscles in her body tensing; positioned in such a way as to leap in any direction, she had tensed herself up and had yet to release the tension within herself. She could feel it straining more and more as the seconds passed and she tried to determine what she should do, her eyes darting between man and blade as the confusion spread from her mind, to her face, becoming clear for even Nemo to see.

“I surrender! You need not worry about fighting anymore. Not with me, at least.” Nemo had raised his hands into the air in a sign of surrender, an action that made Nymoria give in slightly and lower the tip of the blade and release the tension that had been building to a breaking point. Truth be told, she had been ready to spring regardless, or fall apart. Her entire body hurt from the beatings she had already taken, paired more with the fight that had suddenly come up. “I shouldn’t have attacked you, but I was so angry. You were taking all the things here…destroying the beauty…I’m sorry.”

His admission caught her even more off guard than she already was, and Nymoria found herself at a loss for words in the moment. She stood, staring at him as her hand twitched – wanting nothing more than to respond, and yet at a loss for what she should say. He seemed to understand her dilemma, to some degree, and gave a nod of his head before standing up once more. His smile caused her even more confusion, and when she spoke next she found herself shaking her head in an attempt to try and clear it.

“Thank you for coming here. I…I would like it if you would come again, sometime. It gets lonely here…all by myself. That’s why I bring players. I just…I want some company, is all.”

The words were enough to cause Nymoria to give in entirely, the blade in her hand dropping from the readied guard it had been in. She slowly signed with her right hand, taking time to make her words as articulate as possible, all while feeling her face flush with a mixture of embarrassment, and something else.

I understand, Nemo. It is hard to be alone. It is tiring. It takes a lot out of you. I know this all too well. I have been alone for a long time. She could feel tears welling up at the edges of her vision, and she shook her head slightly to try and clear them away. She continued signing, even as her vision seemed to blur slightly. She wanted to get her message across, no matter what it did to her – things that she needed to say, now that she felt she understood him better. Sometimes we do things that hurt us. Just to be close to other people. We don’t want to do them. But we do them to be close. To feel that comfort. That connection. I am sorry that I came here and took things without asking. I did not think about the impact it would have on you. Can you forgive me?

Nemo seemed to beam suddenly, his attitude changing entirely as she asked for his forgiveness. She was taken aback a bit by the sudden change, much less by his acceptance without hesitation – his words coming quickly, so quickly that Nymoria almost missed them. “Yes! I can forgive you. But you need to promise me one thing – come back again. Come visit me again. I…don’t want to be lonely.”

Nymoria nodded once she had deciphered what had been said, making her promise before moving towards the exit of the garden. As much as she felt sorry for Nemo, as much as she wanted to comfort the NPC and assure him that he wouldn’t be lonely forever, she also needed to get out of the garden. To clear her mind, to understand everything that had occurred. I have a lot to think about, before I step into this place once more. A lot to overcome, too…a darkness that I…I thought I had left behind.

She gave once last look towards the garden, towards Nemo and everything inside it, before passing through the gap and back into the darkness of the tenth floor’s edges. It felt familiar, somehow, leaving behind the bright and cheery atmosphere of the garden in replacement for the darkness and emptiness of the tenth floor – a familiarity that felt both usual, and unwelcoming to Nymoria. It’s like coming home, to a home you’ve always detested. Maybe…maybe it’s time to find a new home…
