[PP]F26 A Confusing Reunion <<Bitter Winds Pt. 1>>

Recommended Posts

Cordelia’s reaction was as over-the-top as it was adorable. He wondered whether she was flustered so because of Oscar’s poor attempt at flirting or because it sailed over her head initially. Some combination of both, he imagined. Still, Oscar didn’t want to laugh at her plight. But despite what he wanted to do, the low chuckle escaped him anyway. He decided not to give her time to react to it. Without a word, he lowered himself down to lay at her side. She could have her moment of mortification - their resources were not quite restored after all. But he wouldn’t have her go it alone.

Oscar lay flat on his back, looking up at the sky as the chaos continued to rage all around them. He wasn’t quite certain where Ryland had run off to - or if he’d run off at all given the NPCs general penchant for freezing when you decided to take a break from the task at hand. But he didn’t quite care either. If Oscar had learned anything through his ordeals, it was that you needed to seize the moments you were presented for all that they were worth.

“That’s quite enough of that,” Oscar said. As he spoke the words, his arm snaked under her head and pulled her close to him. It was a liberating thing, not taking any of the game’s nonsense seriously anymore. It afforded him the opportunity to focus on the things that were really important. Most would consider him to be an unhinged maniac. A cold-blooded murderer. A man as mercurial as he was brutal.

He would let them think that. It was hard to debate the volume of names on the Monument that labeled him as the killer. He wouldn’t attempt to justify it. He didn’t need to. They were not the reason he did any of it. Not at first at least. Cordelia, however, was a different story. And he had not fought his fight and suffered what he did in order to not enjoy every single moment he had. Oscar might not have ever imagined such a reunion, but he would be damned if he’d let a Quest come in between them.

“The sky’s pretty at least,” Oscar said, staring up at the clear blue expanse above them. “Kinda hard to fuck up a skybox I guess.”

Oscar was rambling, wholly unsure of how to proceed or what to say. Did he even need to say anything? Was it not simply enough to have just a moment? It had been quite some time since he allowed himself such an indulgence. And when he did, nothing had ever come close to the sheer jubilation from feeling Cordelia’s head on his chest and her body against his. Had his current form had any muscle or skeletal structure, he was certain that his entire body would have relaxed instantaneously.

“I did miss this,” Oscar said finally. He turned his head to face her, offering Cordelia a light smile. “Perhaps more than our ‘duels,’ frankly.” That final statement was delivered with a wink as he stuck out the tip of his tongue. But all of a sudden, his expression grew more grave. There was a sternness in his eyes. “I won’t fuck this up again, Cordelia.” Conviction thundered through his voice, his tone. He was resolved in his stance. He spoke with the same tone as one might say “the grass is green” or “water is wet.”

It was a simple statement. Inviolable. And, to him, it was fundamental as the need for air. A magnanimous yet simple need. “There are few things important to me while I’m trapped here. But you stand above them all. Instead of both of us bolting in opposite directions, maybe we could work together and solve our problems. You know, like a couple.”

The creak of wood and sudden weight next to her was more than enough to tell Cordelia that Oscar had come to join her in her miserable existence. She was stubborn. Reap what you sew, as they’d say. Though the phrase had little meaning when she was so weak for the man. Even if he was the reason she was suffering in silence in the first place, Cordelia could never say no to Oscar’s touch. She let herself be pulled toward him with a begrudging grunt, hands finally straying away from her flushed face to reveal an embarrassed pout. “You’re mean,” she said, simple and sharp, but very little bite. Even she couldn’t deny the way they slot together like two pieces in a puzzle.

It was hard not to reminisce about the lazy mornings they spent together just like this, wrapped in each other's embrace like nothing else mattered. They’d spend the beginning of their days in the comfort of the other’s presence before emerging from their shared home with a naive drive for adventure and thrill. Cordelia had once thought that those moments would be forever lost to her. The meaningless conversation. The soft touches. The reassurances of forever. Just a few hours earlier, she had accepted that she may never find solace in something so benign ever again.

Yet as she traces familiar circles on Oscar’s chest with an idle finger, she couldn’t help but think that she would sooner perish than give this up all over again.

Oscar’s comment earned him a playful slap to the arm and a muffled mutter of insatiable. Still, the growing heat on her cheeks did little to deter Cordelia from returning his smile with her own lopsided one. “I missed this too.” The confession remained awkward on her tongue the longer it lingered, like it wasn’t right to explain what she felt in just four simple words. However, the sudden shift in his tone was enough to take the thoughts right out of her ear, and the pleasant smile she once had was soon replaced with a look of understanding. “I’m just as guilty as you,” Cordelia said, quickly recovering from the momentary shock that came from his abrupt declaration. “We both fucked up,” she began slowly, “and that’s okay.” Reassurance has never been her strong suit. Saying the right words at the right time had always eluded her, and she’d sooner grow a second head than comfort someone through conversation alone. But that’s what made being with Oscar so easy– so natural. They complimented each other. What Cordelia lacked, Oscar gladly made up for tenfold.

“Alright then.” Cordelia propped herself up on an elbow, a gentle smile casting across her features as she gazed down at him. “Like a couple,” she echoed in affirmation. Her free hand reached up to grasp his own, and she’d offer it a soft but firm squeeze. “I’m tired of running,” she admitted quietly, “and my biggest regret was running from you. I know we both have our secrets– skeletons in our closets that we’d rather have locked away forever… but if you’re willing to share your burdens with me, I’ll do whatever I can to help relieve you of them.” Cordelia tenderly pressed his knuckles to her lips before drawing back with a determined grin. The words felt so revitalizing. After so much time second-guessing herself and the decisions she’s made, this newfound confidence felt like a breath of fresh air.

“No more running. No more secrets– from both you and me.”

“No more secrets,” Oscar agreed. The man found it funny how he was so easily able to commit to other things. It simply came so naturally to throw himself - his entire self - into the thick of things. He made no half measures. Except when it came to her. And it was tragic. Perhaps it was fear of the unknown or of his own happiness that held him back. But it did hold him back. It was an untenable notion. His actions needed to follow his words. They needed to telegraph his feelings. Oscar had never felt so profoundly about anyone. It was something he said to her and to himself time and time again, but his actions never cashed that check. Everyone was kept at arm’s length. Even his beloved Cordelia.

And that would change.

There was no sense in it. Their worlds had collided, each caught in the other’s orbit. The more they fought it and tried to pull away, the worse things became. The two of them stood on the precipice of something beautiful and real. All they needed was to simply let go and allow gravity to take them. There would be long conversations. Lord only knew the amount of literal skeletons that were in Oscar’s closet. But there was trust now. He would force it if he needed to. But there was nothing so difficult than lowering his armor.

However. Here? Now?

They could share this resplendent moment of determination. Their combined resolve forged in the crucible of their deepest affections would see them through to the end. Both were stubborn. And each loved the other so much it hurt. Even though it was all scary and unknowable, it was also exhilarating and wonderful. As he stared up at eyes so deep he could drown in them, a euphoria bloomed in his chest. It burned down his veins in the most satisfying of ways. He felt as if he were riding on a cloud.

Tentatively, he reached forward. His fingertips ghosted across her cheekbone and to the back of her head. He wound himself in her silken locks as he pulled her forward into him. Their lips collided in a cosmic display. Shafts of light and deep, eldritch nebulae danced across his vision. Oscar inhaled sharply through his nose, shifting in place. He rose to meet her, chasing her across the light of the stars. There was nothing else but them and that endless expanse. To him, their surroundings simply vanished.

His kiss deepened, his tongue coaxing hers into a playful duel. His free hand sought hers, their fingers lacing together on the ground as the pair crashed into each other. After a while, their lips parted. A low, giddy chuckle escaped his lips as he pressed his forehead to hers. He licked his lips, surprised that the System had left the taste of her upon them. Perhaps the only good thing the System had ever done for him. His eyes were closed, his breathing was labored. He had not experienced a fight that had left him so breathless. And he sealed it all with one final, loving peck on her lips. He met her gaze, a soft smile affixed upon his face.

“It’s your fault I’m this insatiable.”

“No more secrets,” Cordelia repeated softly. It was an unspoken promise that she couldn’t help but feel emotional over. They had spent much too long running in two different directions that when faced with confronting their honesty, the simplicity of it struck a melancholic chord within her. It could’ve been so easy; the solution was within the grasp of her fingers, the tip of her tongue. But she supposed fate was a strange and fickle thing– forcing them apart, molding them into different people, before suddenly putting them back together again. It was a bittersweet feeling to know that they’d lost so much time, but it was precisely why this moment was everything.

It continued to be her everything– her universe– as she was pulled into a hesitant kiss. White stars burst behind her eyelids in a valiant supernova, crashing into each other just like they did as their lips collided once again. Cordelia beamed into the kiss, an unspeakable wave of emotion washing over her. It all felt so right. So genuine. The way their hands weaved together, fit to the touch. The way their bodies were molded to compliment the shape of the other. The experience rivaled that of a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event. And as they parted, heated exhales intermingling with one another, Cordelia felt her own giggle bubble up at the sight of her lover so breathless as she.

Cordelia smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkled with mirth as their gazes failed to stray away from each other. “Guilty as charged,” she mused lightheartedly. As she released another soft laugh, her hands reached up to cup his face, thumbing soft circles against the skin of his cheeks. She mapped out the contours of his features with a steady stare, committing them to memory like one would with the night sky and its constellations. Cordelia had never truly forgotten his face, but it was the little things that piqued her interest. Cardinal had a funny way of resisting change; no one in the game truly grew older nor younger, perpetually stuck in the same body they had all those years ago. But much like the cosmos, nothing ever stays permanent. Stars die, planets shift, and worlds are swallowed whole, but these events remain only a blip in the grand scheme of things– a small spec of light in a vast void if they’re lucky.

So even if the difference was close to nonexistent, she could see it in his eyes, the way he carried himself, the twitch of his lips. Cordelia was far from unraveling Oscar’s story, and she was sure hundreds of pages had been added since they’d last seen each other. Fortunately, she was always a patient person when it came to him.

“I love you,” she said abruptly. A lively ear-to-ear grin stretched across her face as she pressed her lips against his temple, then to his nose, his cheek, and finally a peck on his own– forming a constellation of her doing.

Unfortunately, any more phrases of adoration would die on her lips when, in the distance, she hears the telltale signs of Ryland snarking up another storm. Cordelia sighs, but she can’t help but be amused with their unique situation. It was so incredibly stupid that she found it almost impossible not to laugh. Chuckling, she pecks Oscar on the cheek one last time before patting his chest. “Fun’s over,” she mumbles disappointedly despite failing to untangle their intertwined fingers.

Oscar found it frustrating that their moment of pure bliss was interrupted by the NPCs. He didn’t consider the fact that he had been the one to make a choice to pursue it while in the middle of a Quest. No, the quest needed to bend to him and not the other way around. How could one be expected to experience the sheer majesty of two people’s souls collided together only to have to lower themselves to deal with something as provincial as this entire scenario. The temptation was to say to Hell with it all. To take Cord by the hand and be done with the irrelevancies. Because this was that. Irrelevant. Everything was. How could anything even hope to compete? She was where she belonged. In his heart and head. She dominated his senses from that sweet scent on the wind to the taste of her on his lips.

Oscar was not one to bend the knee, but he would gladly prostrate himself before her altar.

Reality rebounded upon him with renewed intensity. Oscar, for the life of him, could not figure out where these absolutely useless lines of code found the audacity. Could they not see that the two of them were in the middle of something? For a moment, Oscar’s face scrunched up. A deep-set scowl transfigured his features. In that split second, his energy seemed to shift. Where his cup had been overflowing with love and desire and need, it was quickly replaced with annoyance and the deep-seated rage born of it.

But he took a breath. And he squeezed her hand. Once more, all was right with the world again.

He wouldn’t have these mindless peons *force* him back into the throes of combat. Much as he wanted to be done with it all so he could focus on the person that actually mattered, they didn’t even factor into the decision-making process. So Oscar ignored them. He pivoted towards Cordelia. His hand dropped from hers and settled on her waist. The other moved to slowly caress her cheek. Oscar had made the mistake of not putting her in her proper place. Of not putting her above everything else. The enemy could wait. They could even skewer his form if they so chose. But some things were more important than a Quest.

“I love you too, but it’s not over yet,” Oscar said softly. “We decide that.”

His knuckle ghosted over her cheek, moving to the back of her head. His fingertips wound in her air as his lips, once more, collided with hers. He felt compelled to make up for it all. He knew that she didn’t blame him. And he didn’t blame her. But none of this would have happened if he had valued her as he should have. Loved her as he should have. He’d risked his life multiple times to chase numbers and loot. Power that was reduced to computer code. Why could he not risk his life for just one more kiss? Of the two, one was of far more importance. One would follow the both of them out of here and into the real world and the other would just be a bad memory.

That kiss turned into two. And then three and four and five. In the back of his mind, Oscar realized that the blades of the pirates were moving ever closer. His response was to pull Cordelia closer to him. Their bodies were flush against one another. Their kisses were like wildfire. What started with a spark roared into a wild inferno. They grew hotter. Sweeter. Oscar did not want to be here. He didn’t want to part from her.

But he could hear the footfalls thundering towards their direction. He could hear the sound of steel being bared. And as much as he tried to ignore it, it quickly came down to self-preservation. That part in the back of his head that wanted nothing more than survival screamed and screamed louder every passing instant. Until, finally, it drowned out all else. Even Cordelia, much to his chagrin. Suddenly, he stepped back. Swearing under his breath, Oscar drew his blade. And much like he did the first time, he sent bits of shrapnel tearing through the enemy ranks, stunning them.

“Fucking Christ,” Oscar said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Can’t even have a moment without these fucks showing up to ruin it.” He exhaled forcefully, beckoning in their general direction. Impatience was not a good look on him, he realized. He needed to calm himself and pull it together for just a while longer. A task that was easier said than done. Especially with the object of his desire so close.

She might as well have been miles away with the sudden change of aggression in the enemies. He had to wonder if Ryland had done something to set them off, but in the end it didn’t really matter. Oscar and Cordelia would not get a moment’s peace so long as they had this quest on their hands. “They’re all yours, Cordelia. What do you think? Should we just cut our way out of here? We do have a duel on the books, after all.”

Cordelia took a step back, dazed from the sudden onslaught of kisses. She was breathless, as if her words were stolen away in the abrupt act of passion. Slowly, her fingers ghosted over her lips after they parted, and she felt the lingering sensation of their kiss come in a dull but nonetheless pleasant buzz. What was a small moment of thoughtlessness was followed by a roaring wave of embarrassment that overtook her senses. Her gaze flickered over to the stunned enemies, grateful that they seemed to think better than to talk. Yes, she acknowledges that these NPCs were far from real people, but that didn’t change the fact that they looked like real people. And no, she will not be swayed by the romanticism, even if she did find it kind of endearing. With her cheeks already flushing red, she had a ready reprimanding on the tip of her tongue.

However, the flame quickly fizzled out as she took in Oscar’s exasperated expression. Gray irises softened, and Cordelia placed a reassuring touch on his shoulder. Hey, it’s okay,” she said gently. Her hand reached down to tangle itself with his, offering a firm but affectionate squeeze. “We have time after this, I promise.” Her features brightened as she talked, and a smile curled up the edges of her lips. Maybe it wasn’t all the time in the world– she couldn’t promise something as vague as that– but it was time nonetheless. Time that she would cherish regardless of how fast it ticked by, and she could only hope Oscar felt the same.

That wasn’t to say that she didn’t savor the time they spent together right now. Even if combat had become monotonous over the years, it had never once dulled the adrenaline that coursed through her body in each and every battle. It was freeing, in a sense, to be able to control her body in a way that she had never been able to before, in the way she wanted it to. Weirdly, it also made the feeling of fighting alongside another seem more real, more intimate, more personal. Each experience felt new regardless of how many times she repeated the motion, like a never-ending adventure in her infinite storybook. Even with his prolonged absence, Oscar remained the person Cordelia had fought alongside the most, apparent in the way they bounced off of each other’s attacks like second nature. It was a bond told through actions rather than words, and Cordelia was more than happy to continue building upon it.

That being said, she’d rather they’d be done with this quest now than later. Call it poor quest design, her being somewhat antsy after reuniting with her lover after so long, or even Oscar’s irritation starting to wear off on her, but the wave after wave of enemies had started to wear down on her naive drive for thrilling combat. Cordelia was done with surprises and “new” things today. Try again tomorrow, please.

With her attention shifting back over to the stunned enemies, a look of resignation crossed over her face as she soon accepted that the rest of this task might take a while. At least they were probably close to the final boss, Cordelia reasoned even though she had no idea what this quest entailed from the very beginning.

Her eyes flashed an incredulous look at Oscar. “You need to stop referring to it as a duel,” she sputtered, making a face. The grip around his hand squeezed one last time before it retreated to unsheathe her katana. “We could,” she drawled, an attempt at adding a teasing lilt to her voice, “or we could dance around them forever. You’re cute when you’re impatient.” Cordelia ended the sentence with an innocent look, sticking her tongue out just as she dashed off to chip away at the health of the enemy once again.

Her body stayed low to the ground as she delivered a slashing cut across the group, who seemed to be recovering from their immobilized state bit by bit. Holy light flickered in and out of view, and a window of opportunity opened up for Oscar to land a final blow on the weakened enemies.

It was always such a delight to watch Cordelia work. Poetry in motion - movements flowing like water with the speed and brilliance of lightning upon a night sky’s canvas. Had Oscar blinked, he would have missed the maneuver. What a horrible tragedy that would have been. Her attack was punctuated by flashes of white, crackling holy energy following the arc of her blade as she carved through the multitudes. The way the light lingered, an arc of radiance wreathing her body. She was the picture of grace even as she laid waste to the enemy.

Her quip earned a chuckle from the man. Calmed, or perhaps distracted, by the verbal tit-for-tat, he strode forward. He simply did not lose his composure. Not in the face of danger, or in the face of death. And never in the face of the enemy. But what he wanted at this very moment was a bit of isolation. Time to make up for what was lost. It was not unlike hunger, the way it gripped him to his very core. Urgency screamed loud. It tore up, rippling and reverberating, from the deepest parts of his soul. That she could affect such a sensation upon him was vexing and intoxicating in equal measure.

Oscar stepped up to her, standing shoulder-to-shoulder for a moment. His fingers wound in her hair. Silver strands wrapped around his digits as they gently glided through those ivory locks. He half turned towards her, his fingertips tracing her jawline. They came to rest beneath her chin, tilting her face up ever-so-slightly. He gave her a small smile as he tilted his head to the side in faux confusion.

“Well I didn’t want to be vulgar,” Oscar said. His expression morphed, the smile twisting into a smirk as he leaned forward. His lips were a mere hairsbreadth from her ear. He spoke again, this time in a whisper. “We shouldn’t share our evening plans with the NPCs, Cordelia. Some things are best kept behind closed doors, don’t you think?”

He didn’t wait for a response. His question was punctuated with a small chuckle. Turning on his heels, he cut through the group in one fluid motion. The ebony blade performed its dark work to perfection. One by one, each of the enemies cracked and fractured and shattered like glass under the force of his blow. He had to wonder when this quest would come to an end. It seemed as if they’d been fighting forever. It would have tested his patience had he not had things he wanted to do today.

People aren’t things, he corrected himself silently.
