She’d managed to land her strikes against the wasps, knocking them off balance and pushing them back away from her as they attempted to escape the sudden danger that was her form and sabre. She’d followed them, tearing into them with a mixture of finesse and brutality, her pressure causing more damage as she left a wide bleeding mark on one of the creature before she’d wisely chosen to retreat – a decision that had allowed her to avoid the retaliatory sting of the bleeding wasp that seemed to lilt slightly to the side. The piercing appendage had thrust itself into the position that Nymoria had occupied until only seconds ago, the wind of the movement reaching her even as she’d triple stepped backwards quickly.

Oh, that was close. Nice dodge though. She felt herself smile slightly as she congratulated herself on the maneuver, knowing that it was as much luck as it was skill – and also knowing that most fights came down to that, in the end. A mixture of skill and luck, knowing when to move as much as feeling when it was right to do something. She felt that she’d come a long way from where she’d begun, and while she was no master of the fighting arts, she figured she could at least hold her own against some of the more experienced fighters in Aincrad. Yeah. I may not win. But I won’t be struck down with the very first blow…except maybe by the best fighters. But that’s not a fair comparison at all. They’re like natural talents. I’m just… She chose not to continue the thought, as much because her attention was pulled back to the fight as from the knowledge that any negativity in the moment would only bring her back down.

Instead, she spun on her feet, moving out of the way of a strike attempt from one of the wasps, her sabre coming around as she blocked the attempted flanking movement that a few of the others had begun to lean towards. The last thing she needed was to have the wasps manage to skirt around her, successfully cornering her into a pincer that would leave her unable to defend on all sides. She slashed back, attempting to cut into them as much as to drive them back into a position where she could lash out at all four of them at once – hoping to deliver the final blow and end the fight as quickly as she could. She could feel the shift in the wind as they bundled together, hindered by the presence of one another and the impact it had on their ability to freely move. She saw her opening and moved, the sabre leading her dash inwards even as the wasps realised their mistake.

Three of the four fell beneath her attack as Nymoria pushed forward into their collection. The fourth managed to flit away, saved by the form of its once companion, left alone as it seemed to shift with uncertainty at a distance. Nymoria wondered, if only briefly, whether the thing could feel fear or not – and if she had instilled any measure of it into the creature. She quickly doubted the idea, however, knowing that Cardinal made the various mobs and creatures that they were forced to face emotionless. There was no fear, no hatred, nothing other than an innate purpose of destruction and death. There’s a measure of horror to that understanding, once one realises how linear and uncontrolled their purpose and life is. How singular their design. How they have no choices in this world…

She needed to stop viewing them as living things. She knew that, and yet somehow she couldn’t turn her mind away from it. Just like the various NPCs and their almost human like qualities, these creatures were nothing more than a program designed by Cardinal to serve a single purpose. And yet…after spending so much time in this world, can I really view them as nothing more than mindless drones? I’ve seen first hand how they can be individualised…even if only a little bit. It’s…something more. They’re not just random blobs of code that appear, attack and die…there’s more to them than that. She wasn’t sure why she was so fixated on the thought, but as the wasp came towards her again, she remembered that now wasn’t the time or place to consider it all. She could think about it, divulge into it all, once she had defeated her opponent and was safe from any further danger.

She parried the weakly made attempt at her torso, driving the wasp’s arm – if it could be called that – towards the ground. Her fist came up and pushed away the face of the creature, causing it to tumble slightly in the air as she set it off balance. She followed up with a collection of slashes, meant to drive the thing backwards and give her space as much as to try and bring about its final moments in the world.

Nymoria shifted as the wasp exploded in the air beside her, the sabre having thrust through its form, her momentum carrying her on and past the thing as it disappeared from existence. She shook out her muscles, letting herself calm as she released the tension that had built up throughout the fight. A natural reaction, but one which could cause problems later on if she maintained it. As much as the game was unrealistic – the lack of need for common daily routines, the lack of natural pain, and other aspects – it held a measure of realism in some odder areas. Not to mention, it seems like certain things are becoming more realistic as time passes. When I first started, I felt no pain. Now though… She’d noticed more and more recently, that she could feel the sting of a bite, the feel of something stabbing into her. It felt more and more like the actions of the real world, even knowing that the pain dampeners were still in effect.

Sheathing the sabre, Nymoria decided to take a small break from the constant grind of fighting the various wasps that appeared. She knew that the queen wasp would be returning soon, and wanted to begin her travels back towards where it would spawn. I want to be in position when it appears, or at least close to where it is, so that I can grab it before anyone else does. Not that I’ve seen anyone else here, but…knowing my luck… She had to admit that she was relatively surprised to find no one else mining the fields today. It had been oddly abandoned in the area, and she couldn’t help but wonder if she was missing out on some major event. She hadn’t received any notifications, but that didn’t mean much in reality. More than likely everyone is just busy getting ready for the coming boss. Just like I’m doing. Or, should be doing…

She headed back in the direction she’d originally found the queen wasp. There was no need to stand around anymore, she would put down the creature and be on her way home. That was the only plan she needed to worry about for the time being. Later on she could focus on the other challenges that had arrived with the day.

The queen wasp was exactly where Nymoria had originally encountered the creature, softly floating on the air as it drifted around without any real purpose, waiting for something – or someone – to come and engage with it. She paused only long enough to catch her breath and draw her sabre, before moving to intercept the thing. Her eyes cast about, confirming both that there were no other nearby wasps, or any nearby players that could interfere and attempt to grab the queen for themselves.

She moved as agile as she always did, her feet tapping the ground as she crossed the soft grasses and dirt that were between herself and the queen wasp. Her sabre trailed alongside her as she moved, ready to come up and lash out at it the moment she was close enough. She’d already planned her attack even as she’d returned to the location, determined to make the most of her time. Her last encounter had confirmed that stunning it, then following up with the delay attack, would be the best situation. Assuming I can land a hit on it, that it is. She snarled silently as the queen wasp shifted suddenly, causing Nymoria’s first attempt to miss – her sabre passing through open air as the queen turned to face Nymoria.

She leapt backwards as the queen lashed out with its stinger, impaling the air where Nymoria had been standing only a few seconds before. She parried another weak attempt to stab her, driving the queen’s form downward slightly as she focused on trying to bring her own blade up and slash at the torso of the thing. She just needed to land a single hit, and the queen would lock up in place, giving Nymoria the chance she needed to properly position herself to deliver the final blow.

Her strike had been far more devastating than Nymoria could’ve expected, the wasp queen being torn heavily as it froze in place. She could see the formation of the bleeding that would cause the wasp queen’s life to flow from it even more, the health bar cut down significantly as she stepped backwards and put some space between herself and it. She reconsidered her position, bringing her sabre up and levelling it in preparation for her attack. She began timing it, glancing around as she thought about everything she could do in the moment. She realised there wasn’t much point in wasting the energy on a full attack, a simple single target would do in bringing down the queen. It’s already fairly dead…I can just finish it off, easily. There’s no need to waste my time and energy trying to do anything else…

Her decision made, Nymoria readjusted herself, switching up her stance and moving slightly to a better position as the queen began to shift and move again, the stun wearing off and releasing the form from its hold. Nymoria kept her distance for the time being, allowing it to shift in rage as it tried to close the space between itself and her – a change that Nymoria responded to and didn’t allow to occur. She danced across the grasses, moving each time it tried to come closer, watching as the frustration within it built. I guess that removes that idea that they’re emotionless…how did I not notice that before? Was I oblivious to it…or did I choose not to see it?

There was no time to really consider it, however, as Nymoria saw her opportunity. She changed her stance, shifting to her left side in order to put all her power behind the simple strike. She aimed for the centre of the thing’s mass, hoping to deliver the killing blow in a single motion. She knew that the longer she continued the fight, the more tired she would grow – and considering how exhausted she already felt, she knew it wouldn’t be in her benefit to play the slow game at this point. One final push, and then we can go home.

Her blade met nothing but air as the queen moved out of the way, clearing having seen Nymoria’s attack coming, and instead choosing to run rather than engage and risk being taken down. The movement only solidified the nagging feeling that had been hovering at the back of Nymoria’s mind, the behaviour far too individualised for it to be anything but a behaviour. Something out of the norm, for most of the various mobs and creatures she’d faced in Aincrad. It was too personalised, too self-focused, to be the behaviour of a mindless creature. Maybe…maybe I’ve been wrong this entire time. Maybe they really are…alive? In their own way. The thought was disconcerting, to say the least. Nymoria had to tuck it away, to ignore it, for the time being, rather than engage with the possibility. 

Her sabre hesitated as she tried to remember that she needed to end the queen. To find success, she would have to do what her mind was telling her was wrong to do. She needed to focus on surviving, which meant that some things were going to get hurt. Some things were going to die. She wanted to argue with herself, to tell herself it was nothing more than a computer program, and yet she found the typical argument falling short in her mind. Everything she had considered before, everything that she had believed, was crumbling around her. She felt the feeling growing again, trying to use this moment to leech its way back into the forefront of her mind. To take control again, and bring the darkness that had consumed her once, now twice, before. 

The movement of the queen brought her out of the temporary reverie, however, and Nymoria was moving once more. Her natural instincts doing everything required to keep her alive as the queen wasp attempted to attack her. Attempted to take advantage of the pause. It was meant with the sharp blade of the sabre, tearing into it and leaving nothing behind as she shattered its form with a strong attack. As it disappeared, and the notification confirming her loot appeared, Nymoria felt a hollowness reach her. A sudden emptiness that she knew was going to take time to deal with. To overcome. 

What has it all meant? These past years…what…what have we been doing…? Without an answer, Nymoria found herself suddenly lost. She felt the tearing, drowning feeling within herself. The void that wanted nothing more than to consume her, all of her, and leave a husk. Tears began streaming down her eyes as she sheathed the sabre. With the last of her immediate willpower, Nymoria turned away. Turned away from the field that had taken so much from her, and given so little in return. Turned away from all the questions that remained unanswered and unspoken. Turned away, in the hopes that it would all simply be forgotten. But it’s never forgotten, is it? Nothing is ever forgotten…except maybe you...
