Oz 0 Posted September 8 #1 Share Posted September 8 (edited) "God, it's like I'm sitting in ball soup!" The folding fan in Oz's hand was whisked back and forth in a pitiful attempt to assuage some of the ambient heat that always accompanied a visit to the ninth floor. He sat perched on a rock overlooking a bandit encampment, doing his best to parse the locations of their targets through the rippling effect the sweltering calefaction had on the air. Any minute now, his hired muscle would be arriving to do the hard work of taking out this outcropping of delinquents. Any minute now... Droplets of sweat dripped from his chin and caught against the heated stone with a sizzle, small pillars of steam rising as they were evaporated into nothingness. The sound filled Oz's ears like a steady metronome, each second that passed seemingly accompanied by another drip. He prayed his accomplices would arrive soon, lest he diminish away in much the same manner. Wulfrin 0 Posted September 8 #2 Share Posted September 8 (edited) The request Wulfrin received was a bizarre one. There was little in the way of information except that he was being paid to help clear a bandit camp on floor 9. Too be fair, he was already planning to hit the place at some point for the extra skill, but it wasn't exactly high on his To Do list. That didn't matter much to Wulfrin though. At the very least this little venture would let him meet some new people and maybe blow off some steam. The last quest he went on wasn't exactly a walk in the park. Wulfrin stepped of the warp gate in Yogan Village. Why the bandit camp had to bee in the volcanic floor? Who knows. Solaris, Wulfrin's familiar seemed right at home in the warmer atmosphere. Not surprising considering the floor boss here was a much larger and dangerous Phoenix than the one he used as a hunting partner. After a bit of travel Wulfrin, clad in his charcoal leathers and overcoat of his Fallen Angel Garb with his sword, Icingdeath at his side emmitting its trademark frozen mists, arrived at the marked meeting place in his instructions. "So," Wulfrin spoke seeming to appear from the peripherals. "You must be Oz. Cordelia 0 Posted September 8 #3 Share Posted September 8 It’s not often that Cordelia decides to indulge the request board. Too much of a hassle– and while she had no trouble dealing with people, she’d rather avoid meeting the occasional weirdo or asshole if she could help it. Despite that, the request for help with the <<Bandit Camp>> quest had caught her eye. It’s one of the few lower-level quests she’s yet to do, and the pay wasn’t too bad. With her shop being out of commission for the time being, this is probably the best she’s going to get outside of quests and grinding mobs. So she took the job. Obviously. Unfortunately, the pay wasn’t good enough to make her forget how much she absolutely detested the ninth floor. Cordelia actively avoided this stupid volcanic hell-like mess of an area, and she could only recall ever coming here for quests and quests only. It was hot (there’s a reason why her shop is on floor four) and it sucked. Everything sucked. Attempting to ignore the voice in her head telling her that something was in her skin, Cordelia made a beeline for her employer’s marked location as soon as she teleported into floor nine’s main settlement. It was a short journey to the spot if you didn’t consider every walking step feeling like shoving hot coals down your boots. “One of you is Oz, right?” the silver-haired player asked as she approached the pair, tilting her head. She glanced at Wulfrin, noting his noticeably more advanced gear. “Are you another hire?” Spoiler [ LVL: 33 PGN: 26 | HP: 800/800 | EN: 114/114 | 23 DMG | 20 MIT | 5 ACC | 3 EVA | BH:44 | 17 HLY BLS | 16 HLY | ABS. Oz 0 Posted September 8 Author #4 Share Posted September 8 "Well it's about fuckin' time," Oz chided as the unlikely duo showed up at practically all at once. With an unflattering grunt, he placed the bases of his palms against his knees and hoisted himself into an upright position. He closed the folding fan, turned on a heel, and... Oh. Turns out the ambient temperature wasn't the only thing that was hot. That lady was smokin'. And while Oz would have loved nothing more than to forward some feeble attempt at schmoozing her, he was honestly too hot and sticky to have it in him. Even he felt gross, and that was saying something. Putting the thought out of his mind, he hardened his expression once more and gave the two a once-over. From his preliminary impression, they seemed dressed the part, and gave off that I'm-so-cool-I-could-kill-a-bandit-with-one-swingy-swing-swing-of-my-dinga-ling-ling energy. At any rate, he was sure they'd be capable of more than he was. "Our target," he started, pointing his still folded stick-like fan down over the cliff upon which they stood, "is that cute little encampment down there. Horrible, icky dudes. Murderers, thieves, and rapists, the lot of them. And they smell. Pretty sure I caught whiffs of them from all the way up here." Assuming that wasn't the sulfur. "Long story short, I need you two lovely lumps to lump 'em good. Once we've killed about twenty or so, that's when the good part starts. I assume you've both read the quest and know all about the boss." His weary gray orbs shifted lackadaisically from one to the other, the bridge of his nose crinkling ever so slightly as his brows furrowed a smidge. "Well?" he asked sharply, gesturing with his hands for them to get a move on. "Let's not spend all day on it. I want out of this hellhole."
Wulfrin 0 Posted September 8 #5 Share Posted September 8 7 hours ago, Cordelia said: “Are you another hire?” "Yeah you could say that," Wulfrin replied as he ran through his mental checklist. "Truthfully I'm here for the same reason as Mr. Hat and Clogs over there. I've had this quest on my hit list for a while just never had the time to come solo it or find a party to tackle it with." Wulfrin looked past where his employer was pointing. Sure enough the place was littered with soot covered bandits moving in and out of tents. Given his current party composition, he would need to hit hard and fast. Unless Oz had some kind of support capabilities they were three DPS users in a battle of attrition. Assuming the bandits were appropriate for the floor, they should fell pretty easy. The biggest concern was their chief at the end. From what Wulfrin was able to gather, the boss had an ability that increased its damage output if they hit them with Rank 5 Arts. The good news, most of Wulfrin's main arsenal isn't a ranked art. The only reason he would swap one in would be in a one on one fight and in that case, it was just for the sake of energy consumption. "Alright twenty bandits," Wulfrin affirmed that he was understanding the assignment. "Then it's the captain. Afterwards are we mopping up what's left or just leaving? Also I specialize in Tech based DPS. What all are we rocking for this quest? I understand it's sweltering out here, but we also can't just rush in if we don't know what each other is capable of." Cordelia 0 Posted September 8 #6 Share Posted September 8 (edited) It was already hard to be impressed with her employer. She got bad vibes. Bad, bad vibes. Not the kind of vibes where she felt she would be in danger, but the kind where she felt like she’d rather slice her ears off than spend more than ten seconds talking to him. Unfortunately, that didn’t change the fact that he was paying her, so she’d tough it out for now. Whatever pays the metaphorical bills, I guess. As for the other guy– well, he seemed okay for the most part. Maybe a little uptight for such a simple quest, but that was probably just the heat starting to wear down on her patience. Her eyes followed Oz’s finger as he pointed at the bandit camp down below, making note of every NPC that popped in and out of view. There were quite a number of them, but she knew more than well that this quest would be a piece of cake. Kill a couple of enemies, the boss shows up, and kill the boss. Simple enough. “You and me both,” she retorted in response to Oz already complaining. He was spewing some bold words for someone who was only going to be doing a small fraction of the work. And the other guy… at this point, his competence was just starting to annoy her. “As soon as that boss is dead, I’m leaving,” Cordelia replied flatly as she stretched her arms out in front of her. “I’m a pretty standard DPS, and sometimes, I’ll do some big damage.” She shrugged, keeping the answer vague out of indifference. Withdrawing her katana, she rested the dull part of its blade on her shoulder. The look she gave Wulfrin was pointed. “Now can we hurry up and get going already?” There wasn’t really a point in asking seeing as she left before he could respond, leaping from the ledge with a hurried grace and into the camp below. Surprised shouts echoed across the settlement as Cordelia landed on her feet right in front of a small group. Holy light emitted from the blade of her katana as a single horizontal slash cut through the four bandits, their halved bodies lingering in the air for a second before disappearing into a cloud of blue fractals. She sniffed. Nice. Spoiler Cordelia - HP: 800/800 | EN: 95/114 (-19) | 27 DMG | 20 MIT | 7 ACC | 5 EVA | BH:44 | 17 HLY BLS | 16 HLY | ABS. Oz 0 Posted September 8 Author #7 Share Posted September 8 And she's a bitch, too? God, swoon. Oz cupped his palm horizontally over his brow, watching intently as the woman descend right into a pack of the smelly fuckwads and sent them all to meet their maker with a single stroke. He may have started drooling, were he not still accompanied by their other accomplice. Once he'd had his fill of ogling Cordelia, he turned his attention back to Wulfrin, a puzzled expression overtaking his visage. It seemed as though the boy was expecting something from him. "Oh. Oh, god, no. I don't fight. That's what I hired you guys for. I'm just here to watch the show." With that, he shooed the eager little beaver away with his fan and took his seat back on his perch to overwatch the conflict. Once he was sure he was alone, the fan began to hum and illuminate with an azure charge. He may not have been the sort to join his fellows in combat, but that didn't mean he needed to be totally worthless. In a slow and deliberate motion, he brushed the fan across the battle-torn vista, the blue aura leaving the fan and dispersing over the battlefield. Cordelia and Wulfrin would find it easier to hit their marks for the time being. Spoiler Cordelia - HP: 800/800 | EN: 95/114 | 27 DMG | 20 MIT | 8 ACC | 5 EVA | BH: 44 | 17 HLY BLS | 16 HLY | ABS. Wulfrin 0 Posted September 13 #8 Share Posted September 13 (edited) "More for us I guess," Wulfrin shrugged as he drew Icingdeath. The frozen mist began to roll off the blade more violently, it was as ready to slice as Wulfrin was. Wulfrin was in no particular rush to smite the bandits. This was mainly due to his overly confident nature. With his cowl pulled over his head he simply strolled through town until he caught the eye of a group of four bandits. They charge Wulfrin who effortlessly dodged their sweeping sword strikes. They were reckless. They were unrefined. They were hardly worth the time. An azure aura swept over the battlefield, Icingdeath's blade glowing harmoniously. With a grin Wulfrin took a step back and unleashed an arcing attack of his own. The first bandit was the worst off; they became entombed in a shell of ice. The others simply popped into fractal motes of light that scattered on the ashen winds. Cordelia 0 Posted September 18 #9 Share Posted September 18 (edited) Flashes of white and red washed across the bandit camp as Cordelia dealt lethal blow after lethal blow. Another group of bandits fell to her blade before they could even draw their dinky swords, with the last one seemingly imploding on himself as a bright holy light enveloped him. And then poof! The poor guy was no more. If it wasn’t so instant, Cordelia would’ve felt bad for how fast they were clearing this quest. She lowered her sword, glancing over at Wulfrin. Fortunately, he seemed to be keeping up pretty well, even managing to freeze one of the opponents. It’s not like he’d need it though. She was pretty sure their damage output was relatively the same. “Just eight more to go,” she called over her shoulder. It was just then that she noticed the blue aura surrounding the battlefield. She looked up, cocking an eyebrow at Oz. Guess he isn’t totally useless after all, she thought. Oz 0 Posted September 19 Author #10 Share Posted September 19 Just as Oz had hoped, the demolition duo had swiftly gotten to work showing off their impressive skills versus enemies that never, in a million years, would have stood a chance against them. The grandstanding was a bit much, but not too far removed from Oz's expectations. These Frontliner folk tended to like to show off, and as such, Oz felt no need to stand between them and their desire. At the end of the day, if the mobs were slain, and Oz didn't have to do any of the heavy lifting, he was a happy camper. He contemplated unleashing another torrent of smoke to buff his allies, but decided it was unnecessary. The disparity in stats had the end of this fight decided already. The only thing separating them from the end of the horde was time. And and Oz knew, much to his own chagrin, time was a soldier that kept marching onward, receding hairlines and wrinkles be damned. Wulfrin 0 Posted September 19 #11 Share Posted September 19 (edited) "Make it four," Wulfrin corrected. "Seriously though these guys are push overs." The buff faded from Wulfrin's blade but it wasn't necessarily needed. His blade arced through another wave of incoming bandits. Two disintegrated into a volley of fractal motes of data that scattered on the wind. Two more became oddly placed ice sculptures, forever preserving them in the seconds before their death. These bandits really needed more security. Solaris began to enter a holding pattern near the center of the camp. He hadn't needed his familiar at this point as he was confident his targets would fall with ease, so Solaris's task was to keep an eye out for more... interesting prey. Wulfrin clocked the pattern almost instantly, they were getting the boss's attention. "Solaris has eyes on the captain!" Wulfrin shouted over the chaos, with any luck the group might just make it home in time for dinner. Cordelia 0 Posted September 20 #12 Share Posted September 20 (edited) “Well, what do you expect? We’re like three tiers above the recommended level,” she deadpanned. Maybe it was just another high-leveled player with their head up their own ass, is what she thought. Cordelia shrugged. Whatever. She sliced down another bandit that launched himself at her, his body exploding into a volley of blue fragments. Cordelia glanced at the corner of her of her vision, frowning when she realized how much energy she had already expended. She simply wasn’t built for this type of fight. Who the fuck is Solaris? Cordelia didn’t even bother asking, focusing her efforts on bringing down another three enemies. The remaining ones garnered another blast of holy before falling, to which she couldn’t help but think that the world had it out for her by making it trigger on enemies that would die to a normal attack. Oz 0 Posted September 20 Author #13 Share Posted September 20 (edited) "So this is the thanks I get for setting that damn Kirk straight, eh?" The voice came from everywhere, yet nowhere at the same time. Hahaha just kidding, it totally came from that dude at the far end of the camp who was definitely a bandit, but had a slightly different character model than all of the other bandits they'd faced so far. He was important enough to have the ethereal-voice-that-somehow-comes-from-both-within-and-without(?)-your brain talk track. "I'm gonna kill you two, then I'm gonna go after Kirk and put his head on a pike! We'll see who the leader of the mines is then!" Honestly, what a fucking weirdo. It was then that a throwing knife buried itself into the soft earth right in front of the bandit's feet. Oz, who was totally pretending that he hadn't just missed in embarrassing fashion, remained perched on high looking down upon the battlefield. "That's 'you three,' jackass. Get 'im henchmen!" Wulfrin 0 Posted September 20 #14 Share Posted September 20 (edited) Wulfrin was the first to step up to the boss's challenge. The Bandit Boss had barely enough time to take a breath before Wulfrin's blade was barreling down on their form, an emerald light trailing behind The Boss's form began to crystalize as icy tendrils began to spider web from the contact point. Along side the ice, what little armor the boss was wearing began to crack and break as a result of his sword art and their veins began to churn and bulge from the toxic venom that pumped through their veins. "You should probably rethink your plan of attack then," Wulfrin said before letting off a shrill whistle. "I can't help but notice your little camp is completely unprepared for a group cobbled together last minute." In direct response to the whistle, his familiar hurdled down form the sky above. The phoenix began clawing into the boss's flesh causing a scattering of crimson fractals of data like blood. Wulfrin was in his element now, a fight where his insane amount of lingering effects actually mattered. * * * Spoiler Recovery?: ID: 232440 | CD: 11 Wulfrin regains 12 EN Cooldowns: Charge (1/3), Rending Familiar (1/5) Post Action | Charge: [x16] Tech-D (16+8 EN) = 24 EN - 2 Stamina - 1 Rested (2/2) = 21 EN Free Action | Rending Familiar -> Bandit Boss ID 232441 | BD 8 (minor crit w/ focus +1 DMG) | CD 11 | (26+3+1)= 30 * 12 = 360-80 = 280 DMG to Bandit Boss. Cordelia 0 Posted September 20 #15 Share Posted September 20 (edited) Cordelia’s nose scrunched up at the sight of the bandit boss that they had been working towards this whole time. How painfully anticlimactic. He just looks like a regular bandit but with less clothes. Also he looks like he smells. At least she got a bit of fun out of it by watching Oz hilariously miss a throwing knife. How does that even happen? She was pretty sure the guy was standing still for a solid minute. Regardless, she wouldn’t even bother responding to their antics. Cordelia’s been in this game long enough to know that these types of NPCs are yapping yappers who will not stop yapping until they’re six feet in the ground. Immersion and all that kind of bullshit. Nah, she immediately went in for blood. Following up with Wulfrin’s strangely grotesque attack – which seriously, that’s fuckin’ gross– Cordelia aimed her katana for the frozen boss. His immobilized state made it too easy for her to rip out a sword art and chunk his health, which was already less than half after the combined attacks. Oz 0 Posted September 20 Author #16 Share Posted September 20 Oz whistled as he watched that health bar drain faster than happy juice into a hooker's crooked maw. Halfway down already! Apparently he'd selected the appropriate team for the job. He considered tossing out another Sword Art in an attempt to stun or otherwise paralyze the loudmouthed goober, but decided against it. Wulfrin had managed to initiate a freeze, and the bandito polito wasn't going anywhere. Or so it seemed. Best just to hang onto whatever meager Energy he could manifest until the time was right to strike again. He decided he liked that Freeze technique, though. Oz had stunned NPCs in the past, and though their body would not move, they could sometimes still talk. He got the impression that being frozen did a better job at shutting the uncanny valleygoers up a little more reliably, given the Bandit Boss' silence. At a clip like this, Oz had no reason to believe they wouldn't be done in another coupe of attacks. He hoped that turned out to be true, because he was still sitting in ball soup. Wulfrin 0 Posted September 20 #17 Share Posted September 20 (edited) Wulfrin was content to play his role as the DoT applier. He actually enjoyed it. It made the battles less chaotic and easier to manage when you didn't have overconfident NPC's attempting to sound big and tough with a blade buried several inches into their form. He picoted around Cordelia, striking in the narrow window of opportunity left in his thawing foe. Another solid blow from his blade caused more of what little armor the Bandit Boss had to shatter to dust. They were absolutely melting the dude, yet it's attention remained fixed solely on Wulfrin, exactly where he wanted its focus to be. The frigid mist of Icingdeath's blade began to harden, creating a second suit of icy armor that held up surprisingly well in the heat of Floor 9. "All yours Cordelia," Wulfrin smirked as he stepped back leaving himself completely open for attack. "In the event you don't drop them, I'm ready to take the blow. Other than that the floor is yours." * * * Spoiler Recovery?: ID: 232520 | CD: 7 Wulfrin regains 12 EN Cooldowns: Charge (2/3), Rending Familiar (2/5), Frozen Hide (1/4) Post Action | [x16] Tech-D (16 EN) = - 2 Stamina - 1 Rested (1/2) = 13 EN Free Action | Frozen Hide -> Wulfrin -5 EN ID 232521 | BD 7+7=14 hit | CD 7 | 26 * 16 = 416-80 = 336 DMG to Bandit Boss. Cordelia 0 Posted September 21 #18 Share Posted September 21 (edited) “I think we’ll be fine,” she muttered as she passed Wulfrin. Cordelia weaved through the distance between the bandit and her, taking advantage of his aggro and blind spots with graceful finesse. Closing the gap, her fingers readjusted themselves around the blade’s handle as she prepared to deal the final blow. The bandit boss was still recovering from his previously immobilized state, too busy sputtering out various curses to notice Cordelia coming from the rear. It was only when the flicker of holy light catch in the corner of his peripherals did he notice her pursuit, but by the time he could react, she had already sliced his body clean in two. The swordswoman veered to a stop, and her boots sent a spray of volcanic ash in the opposite direction. “Well,” Cordelia began, “that was fun.” The light from her katana dimmed just as she sheathed it back in its scabbard. She turned on her heel, patting Wulfrin on the back as she shouldered past him. “Nice workin’ with you, buddy,” she said, having not even bothered to ask for his name before they even began this quest. Her gaze drifted up and at the rock perch Oz sat himself on. “And make sure you don’t forget to pay me, yeah?” She was gone not even a second later, having been on this damned floor for a minute too many. Oz 0 Posted September 23 Author #19 Share Posted September 23 While it was certainly possible they'd caught a glimpse of him, he sincerely doubted it. He'd left a bit of a dummy - akin to a mannequin - in his place while they'd been busy hashing out the last remaining specks of HP in the Bandit Boss' health bar. While he found himself genuinely grateful for the pair and their assistance in netting him the EXP and extra Skill, he had absolutely no intentions of actually acting upon that gratitude in the form of monetary compensation. It wasn't that he couldn't afford it. He just really didn't want to. He waited around, out of view, until a panel manifested before him heralding the completion of the quest, as well as its associated rewards. With that, he began to slink away from the battlefield, hopefully undetected, to never be seen by the partygoers again. Or so he thought. Fate had a funny way of thwarting such presuppositions. Wulfrin 0 Posted September 24 #20 Share Posted September 24 (edited) "And that's that," Wulfrin said as he returned his blade to it's sheath. "Time to pack up and go home." It was just him, Solaris, and an empty bandit camp. Then the quest panel appeared before him listing the rewards and in an instant the names under his in his vision vanished. "Time to head out I suppose," Wulfrin said to his familiar as he started on his way back to the teleport gate. "Guess getting paid was taken off the table too.
