Omen, totally oblivious to the messages being sent on his behalf, stood quietly in front of a large set of wooden doors. Inside, the Forgotten Time King sat on a broken throne. Betrayal of the King was a quest that was far, far beyond his capabilities -- but if the brokers were to be believed, the Time King had no AOE attacks to speak of. On a whim, he'd decided to check the room out for himself. Sometimes there were higher level players around that wouldn't mind carrying a newbie through a difficult quest.

He sighed. Again his thoughts went to The Crystal Heart, and all the time that he had lost.

He'd received a strange message, along with a package of goods left for him when he'd entered the 21st Floor, heeding him to wait by the room and supply the consumables to those who would come to help him. But it had been a while now, and he was beginning to suspect that somebody had just played an elaborate trick on him. Getting to the boss room had been fairly dangerous, given his level, and he wasn't exactly looking forward to the careful hike back. At least he had consumables now. It was the small victories. Omen turned to leave and was given pause. He didn't want to come off as presumptious, but he had been waiting for a long time, and his curiosity got the better of him.

"You must be the ones sent for me. I'm sorry for the inconvenience." Omen's voice was large and like gravel, but he spoke politely. "I'm not sure who sent me. But I was told to give these to you."

  • Omen changed the title to [PP-F21] BORGOTTEN BIME BING <<BoTK>>

He was taller than her. That’s not typical. Craning her neck, she watched as the giant of a man unfurled his hand. In it rested a potion and… a tofu burger? "You must be the ones sent for me. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."

Acanthus’ mind reeled with thoughts about the stranger. “Thank you.” Taking them gingerly from the palm of his hand, she decided that this was not a trap, and that she would definitely—probably—not die from taking food from a stranger. A very tall, stoic stranger. She quaffed the potion in a single draw, and began to munch on the tofu burger. She had loved tofu in the real world; here, it just tasted like pencil erasers. Trying to forget *why* she knew what pencil erasers tasted like, she chewed on the tofu burger with conviction.

“A’h ‘e ‘aitin—” she swallowed her bite. “Excuse me. Are we waiting for anyone else?”

CORDELIA: <<
K.

Cordelia kept the message in mind as she strolled towards the tomb of the Forgotten King. While Pinball may be the reason why she’s not in some pile of goop right now, the woman wasn’t too keen to accept his request. After all, it was <<Betrayal of the King>> – the very quest that took a whole four-man party of frontliners to finish the first time she accepted it. Granted, it was ages ago and she’s grown significantly stronger since then, but…

“What kind of lunatic sends a newbie on a quest like this?!”

Echos of her frustration bounced off the cavern walls. Cordelia couldn’t even fathom the idea, and some part of her believed that this was just some elaborate scam to waste her time. Or maybe… maybe he’s trying to lure me into a trap to kill me, she thought on a whim, despite her best efforts to put her trust in the boy. I could probably take him though. Her hand instinctively squeezed around the tsuka of her katana. Probably. Fortunately, her doubts would be proven wrong, and she’d let out a sigh of relief when she spotted the duo near the entrance to the chambers, one of which had a very familiar face.

“Acanthus!” Cordelia jogged up to the woman with a smile. “I presume you’re here to help out as well?” She recounts their previous encounter and the mention of Pinball in their conversation. Must be on good terms if she’s willing to go out all the way here to help a newbie. Speaking of the devil– Cordelia turned her head (then up) towards a man whom she’d never met before. “Cordelia,” she said, introducing herself while sticking out her hand to him. He seemed polite despite his looks, even offering her some consumables that Pinball no doubt sent. So he really was serious, was her first thought as she looked through the high-grade buffs. Her gaze shifted back up at Omen, the pensive look on her face dissipating into eventual resignation. She didn’t have the heart to deny both him and Pinball, especially now that Acanthus was involved.

“It’s no problem,” she said eventually, bumping her chest with a fist as a sign of confidence despite her underlying reluctance. “S’long as things don’t go too south, this quest should be a piece of cake.” Hopefully.

Oh look. Babes. Wait...

Upon closer inspection, it was simply the same babes he'd already seen before!

Well that's not as fun.

Never said he was much of a charmer.

Pinball had promised Oz a free carry in his message. He assumed this was because Cordelia, in her mighty mightiness, would simply squash whatever bug it was they would soon find themselves squaring up against. What with her cool sword and her tantalizing moves. Acanthus had also been somewhat of a tough cookie.

The guy, though... Oz felt certain he was the strongest out of the lot. So when he accepted the request to join the party and saw the guy was a measly level 1, his heart sank.

Oh, so it's like that. Guess it'll be up to the girls to keep us afloat on this one...

After all, Oz wouldn't be doing any of the fighting.

He took his place alongside the burly brute, silently, and without greeting to the others. If he was lucky, perhaps he could slip past their detection and collect the EXP without any interaction, however unpracticed in the stealth arts he may have been.

When they had all arrived and used their consumables, Omen nodded. Two women would lead the way, if the consumable distribution was anything to say for it. As Oz approached, Omen was a little confused. Why was he sulking about? It didn't matter. They partied up, and Omen felt obligated to lead the way. He stepped up to those great wrought iron doors and pushed them open.

Inside was a boss room of epic proportions, though it wasn't much to look at in terms of aesthetics. Far off in the distance sat the colossal Forgotten Time King, who, until they had entered, seemed to recline upon its ruined throne, motionless. But it rose to meet them. It drew from its side a massive spear sparking with energy. The very air seemed electrified. In the ruinous caverns of its face there was no emotion. There The Forgotten King stood, awaiting its challenge.

Omen stood behind them. He couldn't help but feel a tinge of nervousness in his gut, but he stifled it. This was what he had signed up for. He just had to put his faith in... these strangers. His expression determined, he glanced over to the others, and allowed them to make the first move.

“Coredelia!” Relief flooded her voice. “It’s wonderful to see you.” Her worries about the boss vanished. She was certain that they could handle whatever Pinball had set them up to do.

“And… Oz?” The rise in her voice didn’t signal uncertainty about the man’s name as much as confusion at what he was doing. He appeared to be scrunching himself up. For a moment, she swore he flickered out of sight before returning to her vision. “It’s good to see you too.”

They followed Omen through the 21st floor. Acanthus found it beyond peculiar that he knew his way around here. She failed to contain her curiosity. “Omen… I understand that you’re level one. How do you know where we are going? This is the 21st floor. I assumed you’d never been in the wilds out here. It would be a death sentence for you without a party.”

If Omen had an answer for her, he didn’t give it in that moment. He simply led on until they approached the wrought iron doors, and pushed them open. As the doors opened, the torches along the inside of the Grand Necropolis lit pair by pair. The interior was massive—it stretched on for hundreds of meters. Deep in the Necropolis, but still close enough to see a faint outline, the Forgotten King stood waiting for them.

Acanthus unsheathed her sword and looked to Cordelia. “I’m sorry, but you’ll have to take the lead on this one. I can take a few of the hits, but not too many. I’ll be right behind you, I promise.”

Oz’s sudden appearance didn’t surprise her. From what she knew, he seemed like the type to mooch off of other’s hard work. Regardless, it’s not like this would change much. So she ignored him, indifference crossing her features as she followed after Omen into the boss room.

The familiar sight of the forgotten king rising from his throne sent a shiver down her spine, but she swallowed down her concerns for some rationality. You’re fast as fuck, she thought, mentally hyping herself up for what seemed like a Herculean task. You fucking got this.

It helped a little bit.

Cordelia looked over at Acanthus and shook her head with a smile. “It’s no problem. I’m no tank, but I’ve beaten this thing before.” Her gaze briefly flickered to the motionless enemy. “I can do it again.” Turning towards the other two, her expression shifted into that of grave seriousness. “And you two – ” Cordelia began, pointing two fingers at them, “ –stay here. Don’t move, don’t leave, and certainly don’t engage.” She leaned back on her feet and gave them one last warning look before swiveling back around on her heels.

She drew her katana, breathing one last sigh. In a stream of white, Cordelia would instantly appear in front of the undead king, blade outstretched with killing intent. Metal clashed against metal as <<Onimaru>> struck the king’s armor, dealing only a small fraction of his overall health.

It would seem his attempts to have gone undetected were in vain. No matter. All that truly mattered was that they allowed him to stick around long enough to extract the EXP from the quest and be on his merry way.

And it didn't take them long to get down to business. Oz had barely managed to tip his hat in response to the only among them who offered him recognition before they were marching ahead into the boss room. Compared to the stories he'd heard about this monster, it seemed easier to find and less threatening than the stories foretold. At least, if he was going by the way the rest of them were acting. Had the thing been nerfed, or were the Players just becoming stronger in aggregate?

It mattered little. As the battlefield revealed itself, and the party began to mobilize, Oz knew what his role was. He retrieved a tea leaf cigarette from his signature aluminum cannister, lit it, and took a drag.

Don't worry. He did other stuff, too.

After a moment, his hand began to glow with a peculiar green light. This light wormed its way into the cigarette, and then eventually imbued itself into the smoke that filled his lungs. His chest shone with a brilliant verdant from the inside before pouring outward through his lips, the smog enveloping the Players and shrouding them in an indescribable mist that seemed to obscure their presence between this dimension and the one between.

Cordelia seemed sure of herself, and sure that she'd be able to defeat the Forgotten Time King. Omen frowned. By herself? Was it not dangerous? He supposed that that was the reason the consumables were handed off to him, but was that not a little reckless, if not just a bit unfair? Omen wished then that the man who'd set this up had come to complete the quest himself. Or at the very least, that Omen was strong enough to assist her. But he hadn't, and he wasn't. One day, Omen vowed, he would return the favor.

Oz, the sketchy looking man in the bucket hat, seemed to activate an ability that aided Cordelia. Omen was a little surprised that he could do something, to say nothing of if he would. Omen had pegged the man for someone here for a free ride after he'd entered the group and didn't say a single word. But Omen was wrong. That was all right.

Cordelia led the charge, but Acanthus stayed right behind, just like she promised. Once Cordelia struck the King’s armor, Acanthus circled around to the other side. She knew she wouldn’t be able to crash through the armor the way Cordelia could. She had to strike more resourcefully. With a quick scan of the armor, she noticed cracks along the joints. She drove her blade into the open joints, and worked the blade ruthlessly. The king growled as she tore Meteor free, and the king began to bleed from the wound.

“It’s disappointing that we can’t stun him. I am at a disadvantage here.” She had built into a TECH-heavy build, but without the ability to delay or stun the boss, she was forced to fall back on her single target combos. Retreating back to Cordelia’s side, she prepared to help block any of the incoming blows. Her mind had already drifted away from Omen and Oz—hopefully they would be able to survive.

“No, it’s fine.” Cordelia shot Acanthus a smile. “We already got almost a third of its health down, anyway.” Her eyes flickered to the king’s health. They’d manage to chunk down the boss’ health quite a bit for only being in battle for a few minutes.

That was pretty reassuring.

Cordelia launched herself back into battle with the newfound confidence. Her boots skid along the cavern floor as she narrowly avoided a cleave of the king’s spear, his undead body lurching forward from the force. She took advantage of the sudden opening, lowering herself along the ground before sprinting underneath his still swinging arm. Dust tracked from her movements as she slipped behind the monarch, katana rearing from behind her to dig into his back.

The fallen king let out a deafening screech as she managed to chunk another sizable amount from its health, reaching behind to bat Cordelia away. Quick on her feet, she already managed to detach her katana and retreat before he could manage to lay a finger on her.

Oz felt the burly man eyeing him, and eyed him back all the same. After a few more puffs of his cigarette, he finally relented, rolled his eyes, and presented the opened canister for Omen to take a cigarette of his own. If he so desired, of course.

"They don't taste great, and they burn all the way down," he explained with a shrug and a strange head-swinging gesture that was impossible to describe through mere text alone. "But hey, at least they'll make you stink."

After Omen took - or didn't take - a cigarette of his own, Oz would set his sights back on the battlefield. The mist which had shrouded them before had now all but evaporated, and he had another trick up his sleeve. Why, this time it was a shroud of azure smoke! Much like the one he'd veiled Cordelia with on their last excursion together.

"Give 'im hell, ladies."

Omen watched with his arms crossed. He was not happy about it. But what else was he supposed to do? The man was well aware that his attacks would deal no damage. It would be inconsiderate of him to even try -- he'd just be getting in the way.

The man who Omen had thought was in the same boat as him, however, did seem to have tricks up his sleeve. He wasn't aware of the Leadership skill, or any of its effects... but he saw the buffs, and he was curious. Still, he said nothing. The man just gave off a certain energy that Omen knew he wouldn't mesh well with. As he was thinking that, Oz offered him what looked like a cigarette. Smoking? In SAO? There was tobacco in Aincrad? It was the first that Omen had heard of it.

He briefly considered the offer, then shook his great head politely. "No thank you."

Acanthus was momentarily distracted by the familiar smell of smoke. It was Oz yet again, billowing strange substances like a chimney. Once the initial shock subsided, she paused to take a deep breath of smoky Earl Gray, focusing in on the smell so that it granted her some accuracy in her strikes.

She watched as Cordelia narrowly skidded underneath the King’s spear to attack from behind. Acanthus had to fight from being jealous of the confidence and ability. So she decided to emulate it as best she could. As the King was occupied with swiping at Cordelia, Acanthus moved in, sword art glowing. She once again lamented her loss of debuffs. It made her acutely aware of her shortcomings. I’ll have to prepare twice as hard for the floor boss fight. If something like this happens in there, I’ll be useless to the team.

Whether she would admit it to herself or not, she was far from useless here. Taking the opening Coredelia made, she drove the sword downward, hacking through one of the King’s legs. He screeched again, preparing to strike at Acanthus. She had already bounced back outside of range, carefully awaiting space for her next attack.

Her sword lit up brilliantly as she finally made use of her <<Charge>> skill, having saved it for when she could bust out her strongest sword art. One palm rested against the butt of her katana as she dashed towards the hulking king, using the momentum to propel her sword forward and deliver a devastating stab attack into his exposed abdomen. For good measure, she’d grab the hilt with both hands, twisting the blade downwards before ripping it back out. She fell back, satisfied that it dealt a good fraction of the king’s remaining health.

Just a few more turns. She blew a sigh of relief. Duking out with an undead king was fun and all but everything else was pretty boring. As boring as a sword fight could be, really. Cordelia shrugged. Guess that’s what happens when you sign up to carry a bunch of people through a quest three times the recommended tier.

She looked over to the rest of the party. "Just a bit more and we got this in the bag!"

The guy seemed to consider Oz's offer, but declined in the end. Whatever. More for Oz, and probably Acanthus since he knew she'd want to bum one.

As much as he would have liked to have continued doling out buffs for his teammates, his cooldowns were being fickle. There was a third Leadership Art he could have used, but in the end, it wouldn't have affected anything. Besides, it wasn't like these gals actually needed the boost in the end.

"Once upon a time," Oz started, Earl Gray smog seeping through his lips as he spoke, "I might have wanted to be like them." His eyes flicked from the duo to his largely silent compatriot. "Swinging swords around, beating the shit out of once-fearsome foes. I still could, I guess." He took another drag. "But these kids crave the shit. They have a passion for it. Think it best to leave a trade to the sort who can truly sink their teeth in."

Oz spoke, and Omen listened. Despite his surly appearance and deep voice, Omen was quite polite. But as Oz spoke, Omen felt as though his suspicions were being confirmed. Had he no desire to escape Aincrad? Did he not feel responsible for helping his fellow man fight at the front, regardless of how futile an effort it might seem? Omen certainly did. And it wasn't only because he had a family on the other side, but because of the families of every other man and woman trapped in Sword Art Online. Fighting for their happiness was a heavy burden, and it was one that Omen was intended to bear whatever the cost. But he let Oz finish, and he did not interrupt, or scoff, or roll his eyes. In the end, his reply was as even as his temperament.

"Is that so," Omen rumbled. His arms were still crossed and his eyes were still on the fight at hand. "And what changed?"

Their pace felt incredible. Even with two people as purely support players, she and Cordelia were making short work of the boss. Cordelia was, at least. Acanthus wasn’t doing much more than picking off slivers of health. Meanwhile, Cordelia was annihilating large chunks of health with single attacks, and dodging the boss’ attacks as well.

But she was still helping, she told herself. Even if she didn’t have the same damage output as Cordelia, she was one of the two people dealing damage. She thought back to her first quest with the swordswoman, where she hadn’t done much more than stun the boss. Everything else she had handled with a single stroke of her blade. Now here she was, backing her up on a high-tier bossfight. Acanthus had to admit to herself that she’d come farther than she realized. A brief self-congratulatory smile formed on her lips before is disappeared under a face locked in concentration—she could reminisce when they finished.

Cordelia huffed. Physical exhaustion wasn’t something that she ever had to worry about in this fuckass game, but the constant clashing of blade against blade was starting to wear down her mind. Diving straight back into a high-level boss fight so soon after returning from her… hiatus… was doing just wonders for her psyche. The hard boss actually being a hard boss? Shocker

Mumbled curses fell from her lips as she shook away the faltering thoughts. Steadied hands resumed their grip on her sword as she prepared for another assault. With the blade parallel to her face, she charged in for another attack. And once again, she’d avoid another swing of the king’s spear, swerving to the side just before it could penetrate her body. The sudden change of momentum forced a grunt out of her, but she resumed her stance before slashing away at the boss.

Its health dropped to less than a fifth of its original amount at this point, and if Cordelia wasn’t so pressed about any of her enhancements triggering at all this fight, she’d have a smug smile on her face.
