[PP-F19-PT] Kalamata Calamity, Part II <<Ki'Raion>>

Recommended Posts

"You're back!  Did you find what you were looking for?  Ki'Raion is a blessing upon this land..."

"Yeah... about that.  He kinda died, mysteriously... and very suddenly... before we found anything.  So, no, not so much luck on the whole 'go find me some kamalata olives' thing.  I still don't really know what she needs them for."

"Oh, dear..."  The old woman's eyes widened at the prospect that something could slay the legendary mob, dashing her hopes and reason for living.

"But... uh... fear not!  The beast is resilient and will surely return.  I'll gather heroes and set out in search of its new spawning grounds."  That seemed to sate her, as well as sounding like the thing was some sort of land fish - Sharkbait 2.0.  Freyd just groaned internally, having grown a tad tired at the sheer number of times he'd run that other quest of late.  Maybe it was time he let someone else take a shift.

Regardless, he still had his olive problem and the broken terrain of this floor made it virtually impossible to find the sparse nooks and crannies where Ki'raion's passage had begun to restore the floor's decimated flora.  His best option remained following its literal footsteps and pray to Cardinal - cringe - that it had a hankering for Greek salad.

Morningstar didn't hang out around Floor 19. It was dark, gloomy, and full of weird mobs (and weirder people). There wasn't a lot going on in what was known as "Haven," and the Forbidden Lands were too foreboding for his liking. So, you may be wondering, what was Star doing there? Well...

Wait. Hang on.

He was pretty sure he had done this before.

Urbus disappeared, and back Home he was. Only, it wasn't his beach house. It was the frickin' tent town again. "Dammit, dude," he stepped off the teleporter and this time made it four feet before a wolf attacked somebody. This time, they were trying to defend themselves from the beast. It ripped holes in their tent, trying to get at them with its drool-covered jaw. Morningstar walked over and gave it a hearty kick. It whimpered and ran off (back to the Forbidden Lands, he hoped).

The best songs have a memorable reprise. The last time she had quested with Freyd, it was by sheer accident. From getting lost in Fortaleza to stumbling into him at just the right moment, her first quest in a party had been nothing more than a pleasant accident. You were lucky you didn’t die.

This time, every step of the process had been more intentional. Acanthus had selected this quest specifically for the skill it gave. She had heard about Freyd shepherding a different crew of new recruits through the quest. She reached out to Omen, learned Freyd was preparing a second run, and decided to be there. No need for luck this time.

She thought about the new recruits. It hadn’t been that long ago since she was running Sharkbait with nothing but low-level gear and a prayer. She was already feeling nostalgic.

Nostalgia for a death game is ridiculous. You’re here to climb floors, not make memories. Climbing floors meant getting stronger, and getting stronger meant getting skills. Even if she wasn’t anywhere close to where she wanted to be, she was still much stronger than she was on floor five. While she wouldn’t be able to solo the boss, she certainly would contribute more than she had in the fight against Terra Firma.

“Hello again, Freyd. Omen told me that you just helped him with this quest, and that you’re planning on taking another group. I’d like to be in your party. I promise to be more useful this time.”

Freyd just blinked, dumbfounded at finding himself in the same situation in as many days, both times with Morningstar stumbling into the scene in a similar fashion.

"Are you stalking me or something?!" Said in jest, it was nonetheless weirdly coincidental to run into each other twice in as many days in precisely the same place and equal manner.  Freyd nearly jumped onto the ceiling, or would have if one existed, at the sound of Acanthus' voice prodding at him from behind.

"Who the... you know Omen? And when the heck did you get all growed up?!  You were still wearing sharkskin diapers last time I saw you."  The poor man was struggling more than he should, all over garnish for what seemed highly likely to be some potato-based meal, because Irish.

That was unfair, cried his shadowy conscience, basically because it was.  He'd been yanking himself by the leash of his own expectations all over the castle for all the right reasons, but at too frantic a pace.  The whole point of his  recent efforts towards making personal changes was to slow down, and yet he kept doing the opposite. It all came back to the very same place where this whole escapade started: with him holding the bridge of his nose, wondering when the headache was going away.  The answer was cruel, yet also flagrantly apparent.  Pleading eyes turned to Morningstar, knowing they had just found themselves in the same circumstances, yet beholden to the ideal of helping out those in need.

Sigh.

"Star.  Can you spare a few minutes?  Looks like Acanthus is blitzing through the floors and could use a little boost to reach the front lines.  Plus, I still need olives."

Star looked over at Freyd, who'd come by just in time to see him kick a wolf. "No. I live here (apparently)."

He didn't bother asking why Freyd was on the nineteenth. He was pretty sure nobody went there by choice. Ki'Raion again, Star figured. A newly familiar voice caught his ear. He recognized Meteor first and Acanthus second, but was happy to see them both. So, she was their customer today.

"I can spare..." he looked at a watch that wasn't there "...about six hours. No more than that, though. I have plans."

Freyd was still missing his olives. Morningstar, who didn't particularly like them, couldn't have cared less about olives, but was happy to help out some pals. Besides, he was already on Floor 19—might as well do something while he was in the area.

"Okay, so. Ki'Raion. Again. Should we start charging for this? I reckon we could take four or five groups a day at, give or take, 20 thousand col each."

  • Freyd changed the title to [PP-F19-PT] Kalamata Calamity, Part II <<Ki'Raion>>
15 hours ago, Freyd said:

"Who the... you know Omen? And when the heck did you get all growed up?!  You were still wearing sharkskin diapers last time I saw you."

“It’s not fair to Omen to say I know him. More accurately, we’ve met once before.” Her face remained impassive despite Freyd’s playful comments about their previous quest. “I don’t think we literally *grow* in this game, but I have leveled up.” She looked over her new armor. “How long ago was it, anyways? Everything feels a little timeless when it’s all ones and zeros. At any rate, I won’t be dead weight like last time.”

Quote

"Okay, so. Ki'Raion. Again. Should we start charging for this? I reckon we could take four or five groups a day at, give or take, 20 thousand col each."

Acanthus nodded in understanding. “We’re asking a lot for you to come down here just to catch us up to speed. I can spare the money, and I don’t intend to stay a charity case forever. If this is what it takes for me to contribute to the effort, then it’s yours.” She sent the trade offer over to Morningstar. “I’m hoping this cost covers both of your services, but I can pay you each if necessary.”

Trade Offer: @Morningstar: 20,000 col

"Plans?  Does that mean beach volleyball or another card game?  I seem to keep catching you in the middle of some sort of leisure activity, unless you're just... yanno... lost?"  Freyd waved his hands around randomly, gesturing to the entirety of the floor around them.

"And don't you pay him," he counseled Acanthus.  "That's like feeding pigeons.  Next thing you know your house will be covered in poo and Morningstar will be nesting in the attic.  Besides, it's good for him to do this sort of thing every once in a while.  It keeps his scoundrel rating manageable.  That's in your third tier sub-menu, if you're looking for it, right next to the posthole digging profession."

Grinning madly beneath his cowl, having turned away so that only Star could see, Freyd led them to the familiar lift up to the Bastion Wall, which they would need to traverse to find their quarry.  Once their initial rendezvous had fallen behind, Freyd turned to idle chatter to pass the time.

"You've certainly come a long way, Acanthus," he began, in a complimentary but more serious tone.  "And you were never dead weight.  I prefer to think of untested players as seeds in need of nurturing, hence the reference to growth.  What path have you chosen for yourself?  I'm curious to know what you've been up to.  Frankly, this pace of level increase is astounding."

They were already descending the far side of the great wall, the desolate Forbidden lands stretching out to the horizon before them.  It wasn't much to look at, safe a rocky, barren landscape.  Large forms drifted in and out of sight in the distance, so massive in scale that they would be terrifying to encounter in person, but none ever seemed to venture this close to the battlements.

"Lost? Me?" Star chuckled. "No... of course not... never... it's bingo night in Coral," he admitted.

A few button clicks and the trade offer was succinctly denied. Star wasn't going to rob the girl blind, especially for a quest that they could finish in a few minutes. The longest part really was the commute. "We'll put it on your tab, how 'bout that. You can owe me."

Past the Bastion Wall Shrine and far into the Forbidden Lands, the came upon the only spot on Floor 19 that Morningstar could call beautiful. It was unfortunate that a giant flower-cat lived there; if it was unclaimed, Star might have built a house there.

"Here it is," Star held out his arms as if he was showing off a grand piece of artwork. All that was there was a giant hairy beast, though. "Ki'Raion. I won't waste time with introductions. It can't really talk."

He clicked his heels, zooming forwards and smacking the mob on the back with the flat side of his sword.

She looked at Freyd, then Morningstar, then back to Freyd again. When Morningstar cancelled the trade, she simply nodded. “Come by my shop anytime, I will be sure to have some performance crystals in stock for you, free of charge.”

Freyd led the party to the Bastion wall, all while Acanthus silently thumbed through her menu. She didn’t remember seeing a posthole digging profession. It was probably just another custom skill.

“Given my performance profession, I decided to lean into being able to supply myself with performance crystals. Ideally, the goal is to land as many 'dots' as I can at the beginning of the fight before transitioning to a more flexible role of damage or support. But I’ll level into whatever is needed to clear floors, if you have any suggestions. That’s why we’re here, after all.”

Acanthus paused when Freyd asked what she’d been up to. All her previous quests seemed to flash through her mind. She recalled meeting NIGHT and earning her familiar; even the quests she stumbled into by accident, like killing the Ape King with Oz and Shay, or killing the elves with Cordelia, or killing the bandits on the fifth floor… Or killing whatever had confronted her in Krycim. For the most part, Cardinal hummed a single, lonely tune, and Acanthus could not find the rhythm.

“Oh, you know,” she said, responding to Freyd. “Leveling.”

Deep in the Forbidden Lands, the trip finally arrived at Ki’Raion’s lair. He’s beautiful. She had little time to ruminate—Morningstar had already launched into the action. Readying her sword, she prepared to dance to Cardinal’s killer tune.

Watching their angles of attack, Freyd monitored the mob's health and condition closely, waiting to make his move.  Morningstar raced in, fast, hitting the lounging lion like a speeding bus and sending it skittering with an indignant roar, paws and flower petals flying everywhere.  Acanthus followed suit, sensing her opportunity to add insult to injury, pummeling the poor mob to the extent that hardly anything was left of it.  How the mighty had quickly fallen.

"Forgive us, Ki'Raion.  You deserve better."  The words were spoken to no one in particular, the others likely too distant to hear.  Flinging his arm forward, a chain lanced out and snared the mob with a giant butcher's meat hook, Freyd heaving on the line like some sort of land locked fisherman after a distant catch.  Too dazed too effectively resist, Ki'Raion slid towards the Whisper, its haunches leaving a deep grove in its wake.  Like a body being dragged to its grave before even being given the dignity of its final breath.

The thought did not sit well, but this was necessity at play.  Life in Aincrad could be cruel, especially when it came to the conflict between players and the world itself.  They were often worse to each other.  Halting the mob's progress with a booted foot.  Freyd paused only a second to make eye contact.  It deserved that much.  When his fist fell, it did so enough force to shatter its beleaguered avatar, leaving only a shallow crater where the magnificent beast had perished.

Abilities

  • Tail Swipe | If BD 9-10 and MD 1-5 is rolled simultaneously, <<Ki’Raion>> unleashes a powerful tail swipe that can strike a whole party. Deals 150 AoE damage to all party members as well as normal damage to the player with the most hate.
  • Venus Fly Trap | If BD of 9-10 and MD of 6-10 is rolled simultaneously, <<Ki’Raion>> lunges at the player with the most hate and encases them in its floral mane. They experience 50 additional damage and will take 50 additional damage for each following turn that they're trapped. They are freed when at least 200 HP damage has been dealt to "Ki’Raion" or another player achieves greater hate. A trapped player may still attack.
  • Photosynthesize | Absorbing the Sun’s energy, every second attack <<Ki’Raion>> makes will be damage boosted by 50. On turns when this damage boost is not active, <<Ki'Raion>> will heal 100 HP. This ability is only available to <<Ki'Raion>> if fought during the day.

They made quick work of Ki'Raion. None of the three had been scathed, and Freyd had even picked up a bit of loot for their trouble. "Nice work, team," Star said, happy to be done with the overgrown feline.

"Need help collecting those olives?" He asked Freyd. As much as he hated them on a personal level, he was in the area and thought it worth his time to lend a hand to a friend. "I've still got hours to kill," he said, popping the cork off of a strange purple potion and downing the whole thing. It tasted sweet, but not in a good way. It was more like... artificial sweetness. Not quite medicinal, though. More like stevia. It wasn't his thing.

He checked his menu clock to make sure that he actually had enough time to stay a while. The old folk in Coral were nothing if not punctual. Last time, he'd been berated for his tardiness in front of the whole bingo crew.

Acanthus watched emotionlessly as Freyd dragged the cat to its death. The thing bucked when the meathook sunk into the monster’s side, dragging it closer and closer to Whisper. It fights so hard for something that isn’t really going to die. Its cries for help are just the result of some conditional programming. None of it is real.

Turning away as Freyd struck the final blow, she saw Morningstar down a bottle of something purple. “You weren’t hit during the fight,” she remarked. “So is that a potion to help you collect olives? I should be able to help find some.” She started picking through nearby trees with something that resembled a muted enthusiasm. “Hm. No luck with olives. But I did find these.” Her hands emerged from the foliage with an absurd number of fruit that vaguely resembled limes. “As well as a shiny one.” She nodded her head at a “lime” near the top of the pile she carried, which appeared to be made of solid gold. “Citrus in this climate makes very little sense, and solid gold citrus even less so. I assume that the latter is not usable, but it should sell for a few thousand col. We can split the proceeds once we return to Haven.”

She put the “limes” in her inventory, then responded to Morningstar’s comment. “I have some time to spare as well. I’ve scheduled sword art practice at 19:00, theory warmup exercises for 20:30, and performance crystal crafting from 21:00 until bedtime.” She looked up from her menu. “That gives me a few more hours if you’d like to find something else to fight. Freyd, what about you?”

"Hrm.  Yeah.  I'm not seeing any, so I guess it's time to poke around."  Acanthus boggled him slightly by her odd comments and sudden production of citrus, her general quirkiness deemed amusing, until...

"Wait.  You're a forager?!"  It was like the heavens had just opened up and sent pure fortune and radiance shining down upon them.  Fishing was useless at this sort of thing.  Olives, sadly, never took the bait.

"And, your schedule is unusually regimented."  It wasn't exactly a compliment, nor truly an insult.  Freyd was more anal retentive than most in his habits and had filled literal binders full of novel observations during past therapy sessions, but this woman's precision struck him as oddly unhealthy.  He could never afford, as his guild's spymaster, to be so predictable.  Life in Aincrad had also forced him to develop and foster his own unique brand of eclectic chaos just to keep people guessing.  Being predictably unpredictable took remarkable effort.  The alternative, in his trade, involved lethally final fireworks and was considered 'best avoided.'

"Here," a flick of his void-clad hands summoned a small buffet for their benefit.  "If we're going to stick around, we should take added precautions."

“Ah, a damage potion. That makes more sense.” She quaffed the potion quickly, doing her best to avoid any flavor. She was mostly successful, but did detect an odd note of… Sharp? Sometimes the potions tasted in ways that didn’t seem possible, likely a product of the Nervegear funneling all the senses directly into the brain. Speaking of senses, she fought to keep disappointment out of her face as she saw Freyd produce food. But she was not about to turn away free buffs. Tentatively, she took a small bowl of the shrimp gumbo and ate.

The food almost immediately bounced back up. She turned, preparing to cover her mouth, but she powered through it. It was the worst food had tasted for her in a long time. Part of her was angry; she had been doing so well with food until recently. But the gumbo tasted like spoiled seafood, and the rice cracked in her mouth like tiny fish bones. She felt the shards prickle as she choked them down.

Aware that she was likely making a scene, she tried for an excuse. “The food is excellent. I simply… I have a shellfish allergy in real life. But thank you for the meal.”

"Cool. Gumbo," Star said, taking a portion.

Star had never considered practicing sword arts. He thought that what they had just done was practice, and that boss fights were the tests. He didn't see the harm in repetition, though. "I'm curious what 'theory warmup exercises' are," he said, taking a bite. Quite frankly, he didn't know what gumbo was.

Without turning, he began to move. The direction was aimless, as he did not know where olives grew. After a few steps, his foot latched onto something stuck in the ground, and he tumbled backwards. It was a golden cornucopia. A variety of fruits spilled out from it, and he'd accidentally squished a plum with his foot. "What the-"

He cranked his neck to see where it had come from, only to find that a whole orchard had spawned behind them. "Halt!" A deep voice shouted. Four spears poked into his back. "Who dares intrude on the grounds of the Fruit King?"

“Theory exercises, as in music theory. I don’t remember much from high school, but sometimes writing down chords can help inspire some different ideas for performance crystals…”

She was about to explain more, but she noticed Morningstar seemed to trip over a cornucopia that Acanthus hadn’t noticed before. A sprawling orchard spawned behind them, guarded by… fruit soldiers? They bore a striking resemblance to the “limes” Acanthus had pilfered, except they were large, limbed, and angry. Sour, even.

Four of them flanked Morningstar, poking him with spears. "Who dares intrude on the grounds of the Fruit King?"

“I am confused,” Acanthus said plainly as she drew her sword. “Is he the Fruit King because he holds dominion over fruits? Or is he simply a citrus with lineage?” She realized that perhaps it didn’t matter, and that her questions about fruit politics were inopportune. Preparing to slice through the enemy and reach their backlimes, she dove into combat willfully.

"I swear to god, Star, if you landed us in a Fruit of the Looms commercial.... I am not fighting against animated underwear!"  Freyd groaned and laughed at the same time, wondering what he'd done to deserve this day, and half-convinced this was still some sort of fever dream like that one with the three meme-geddon bosses from years back.

"My money's either on a masquerading broccoli crown or some sort of angry pineapple.  Those spikey things at the top always seem like they belong to royalty."  He shrugged, grinning despite himself and the absurdity of their circumstances.  "Between you an Hirru, Star.  Actually, who am I kidding.  I've stumbled into plenty of this stuff on my own."

Acanthus had disabled the citrus guards, making it a cinch for him to wipe the slate clean and send them all back to the chopping block.

"Huh. I can never remember: are olives considered a fruit?  They technically have seeds, though someone once told me that wasn't all there was to it."  If nothing else, the prospect had bolstered hopes that he might still finish his unorthodox grocery shop with some degree of success.

The Fruit Knights were given no chance to explain their politics to Acanthus, because she and Freyd swiftly tore them apart. "Just like every other Friday," Star shrugged, joking. He took a few steps into the garden and without looking back at Freyd, answered, "olives are most definitely fruits. They're like grapes, but bad."

They wandered into what was probably some weird fruit kingdom, troubled by no other guards for the time being. Hedges lined the path, with dozens of paths to their left and right, all separated by equal distance and labeled with a different fruit species.

"Lemon garden. Peach garden. Grapefruit garden," he stopped before one and peeked inside. "Tomato garden seems like it shouldn't be here, you know?"

Positioned near the end was a treasure trove for Freyd. "Here we are. The Olive Garden. I'm thinking we just steal a bunch and run away."

At both sides of the garden was a stone statue, shaped identically to an olive. Star thought nothing of them, but when he took a step inside, they miraculously came to life. Arms and legs popped out of their ovular bodies, and swords formed in their grips. Star didn't even have anything to say. It was just weird.

With a running start, he slashed at the pair, chipping away at their stone bodies.

“Olive trees are angiosperms, which makes them flowering plants,” Acanthus explained as Morningstar and Freyd cleaned them up. She tried her best to avoid over-explaining—part of Freyd’s tone suggested that he was simply making light conversation. He probably already knew all of this. “Olives are the part of the tree that forms around the seeds. I believe that makes them fruits. They’re like grapes, but good.” Her last sentence overlapped with Morningstar’s comment, eyebrows raising as she restrained herself from speaking further. When Morningstar mentioned the tomato garden, Acanthus began to pinch herself quietly. Tomatoes are fruits, tomatoes are FRUITS, but they will not care about the botanical differences, so keep your mouth shut if you don’t want them to think you are some weirdo.

“Actually—”

Thank Cardinal, Morningstar appeared to find what they were looking for just then. It was enough of a distraction for Acanthus to avoid her diatribe. She drew her sword as the Olive Garden Guardians sprang to life, ready to defend their grove.

"Dine and dash?  Why not"  This place was a virtual buffet.  "And tomato garden does sound weird."  Placing their discussion on hold, his two companions decimated the grove guardians, slicing them to pieces with extreme culinary prejudice.  Acanthus had been going on about something or other when they were interrupted. Freyd was only half-paying combat half his attention, the rest of it reserved for the sea of little back dots clustered all over the surrounding shrubs.  "Jackpot! I can't believe you actually found some!"

The guardians were being predictably rude, flailing after them with their stubby little T-Rex arms that struggled to reach beyond their round, bulbous bodies. It was actually rather tragic. They hadn't even bothered getting dressed!  Dashing in beneath their defense, Freyd smashed his fists through both of their cores simultaneously, pitting them for good measure and downing them in a manner befitting any impertinent stone fruit.

"Do you think we should press our luck, or maybe throw some oil on this fire and see of we can call out their boss?  I mean.. we could extend him an olive branch, or possibly break one off him."  Fighting hard to keep a straight face, Freyd's eyes suddenly went wide.  "What if it's female?  Do you think she'd be extra virgin?"
