The first few times Morningstar saved Koko, he thought about how sad it was that she would continue to find herself alone in the cave all over again for the rest of her existence. No matter what he or anyone else did, the quest would repeat. Eventually, he stopped thinking about it altogether. Instead, he would enjoy meals with the girl and her mother. He would appreciate that sometimes, she was safe at home.

He sunk into his chair, flashing Firefly an earnest smile. He didn't know what to say, so he let the conversation end naturally. She went on her way, leaving him in solitude. His eyes lingered on the doorway while he lifted a weathered old journal from his lefthand desk drawer. "Who'd have thought?"

He opened it to the first page. For the umpteenth time, he cherished the handwritten message of a friend who had long since passed. "Guess you did," he said, shutting the book.
