"So this is it," Wulfrin sighed as he paced the small staging area he was placed in. "Pit fighting hasn't ever really been my favorite thing, but since the system introduced the new quest I may as well give it a shot."

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" A shadowy version of Wulfrin stood arms crossed across the room from him, their feet linked to Wulfrin's via his shadow that danced in the flickering of the torch light. The voice was only present in Wulfrin's mind, but he and his shadow had more and more conversations as of late, a charming side effect of the skill he learned from Freyd. "You haven't exactly gone solo since our duel. Aren't you afraid you'll be rusty."

"Well," Wulfrin said as he readied his blade, Icingdeath"The good news is there's no real danger with this one. That means it's the perfect time to get my feet wet."

"You," A voice echoed through the chamber. "Your fight's up next. Follow me."

Wulfrin's shadow returned to normal as he followed the NPC toward the arena. The sounds of the crowd roared from the stands as Wulfrin stepped forward into the arena.

"Good luck."

"Thanks."

Wulfrin stood in the center of the arena awaiting his first challenger. The gate to his left opened and out rushed a gladiator, clad in minimal armor and frantically swinging a roman gladius. Wonderful. Grecian combat style versus a Roman one. How poetic. Wulfrin moved to meet the gladiator's blade with his own, but Wulfrin was much faster. Before the gladiator had even readied its blade, Wulfrin's had already landed a heavy blow across its midsection. Icingdeath froze Wulfrin's target in place allowing Wulfrin a moment to reclaim some distance.

"Nice work," His shadow commented in his mind. "At least your speed hasn't deteriorated too much."

"Can you not just be a polite passenger?" Wulfrin retorted. "I'm trying to concentrate here."

"Yeah, you can't use that skill any more."

"I'm well aware."

"Oh look, he's thawed out."

As pointed out, the Gladiator had recovered from being frozen by Icingdeath's attack. Wulfrin's target was quickly closing the distance, and Wulfrin had to be ready for an attack. Romans were always focused on combat tactics. Wulfrin had done a little less than half the fighter's HP in one strike. Wulfrin had three of these guys to cut down before he could face off with the current title holder.

Wulfrin maneuvered around his incoming foe with precision and speed. In one fluid motion, he deflected the Gladiator's blade and raked Icingdeath across the totality of the Gladiator's back. Wulfrin watched as his foe's HP dropped to a mere sliver as all of his stacked affects took hold. Now all that was left was to either strike first or allow the lingering effects to deal the final blows. The Gladiator stood as a frozen statue once more before returning to its animated state and preparing to rush Wulfrin, its movements sluggish and wild. It was desperate to stay in the running. Wulfrin was already several steps away from his foe, making it nearly impossible for the gladiator to gain any ground.

"You're just toying with him?" His shadow questioned.

"More like using him as a warm up." Wulfrin replied as he readied his blade for an incoming attack.

"Same thing."

"It's really not though."

The crowd was not very excited to see such a one sided fight. Ultimately, Wulfrin knew the point of the quest was to put on a show, so why not lean into it. He smirked and took a less defensive stance leaving himself completely open. Icingdeath's blade was plunged into the dirt, Wulfrin choosing to fight with nothing but his fists. For a moment he felt like Freyd, facing down the strongest of foes with nothing more than his fists. Granted that had all changed recently with Freyd's shift to a more heavy armor and katana.

The Gladiator charged Wulfrin, attempting to make blade meet flesh. Wulfrin deflected the blade with his open palms and maneuvered the gladiator harmlessly passed himself. Wulfrin was show boating a bit. It was time to start giving the crowd what they came for. The Gladiator collapsed to the ground, its HP gauge falling just short of zero, a side effect of the quest's parameters. Wulfrin raised his fist in triumphant victory as the crowd roared.

"Laying it on a little thick there," His shadow mocked.

"They paid for a show," Wulfrin retorted. "I'm going to give them one."

Wulfrin returned to the center of the arena, as the crowd cheered and applauded. The first gladiator picked themself up and slowly made their way out of the arena the same way they had entered. Wulfrin paced the arena pumping up the crowd as best he could. The middle gate opened as another Gladiator rushed in, this time with a spear and shield. Wulfrin was content to let this battle play out a bit. The first was a warm up, but it was far too short for his liking.

"Watch your left," Wulfrin's shadow warned.

Wulfrin instinctually side stepped a jab from the Gladiator's spear and retaliated with his own strike to his foe's back. The crowd was much more invested in this fight. Both fighters were doing their best to put on a show, though one of them was trying far harder than the other. The mobs HP rested just above half just like the last one.

The gladiator and Wulfrin clashed once more. This fighter was far more skilled than the previous one. Wulfrin's blade met shield and spear before Wulfrin managed to create an opening enough to land a blow. The mob's HP dropped. It was low, but without any of the DoT activations that usually accompany Wulfrin's strikes, it would take another strike to put the mob down. Wulfrin had miscalculated a bit on his strike however. He felt the pins and needles feeling of his brain signaling a wound. The HP bar in his vision dropped slightly as he gripped the shaft of the spear lodged in his left leg.

"Where was my warning for that one?" Wulfrin scolded his mouthy shadow.

"Hmm?" The shadow questioned. "Oh right. You left yourself completely open. Try not to leave your left flank exposed like that."

"Yeah," Wulfrin retorted sarcastically. "Fantastic advice. I'll try to keep that in mind."

Wulfrin recovered from the blow as he put some distance between himself and his gladiatorial combatant. The crowd was roaring. The fact that he had gone the entirety of the first round without so much as a scratch was playing into his favor a bit. The crowd was excited to see a hit finally make contact with Wulfrin's form. He began to work the crowd once again, bringing the attention back to him. The crowd began to roar louder as the gladiator charged Wulfrin once again. This time Wulfrin predicted the attack. With a skillful dodge, the gladiator missed their strike and landed face first into the dust. Wulfrin blade held high, approached his prone opponent. The crowd roared encouraging Wulfrin to put an end to the round of combat. Wulfrin was getting the feel of how the crowd worked. The more even the fight, the better they responded.

The gladiator picked themselves up from the sandy ground, crimson fractals of data dripping from its wounds like blood. It picked up its spear and began to rush Wulfrin again. For Wulfrin it was an easy attack to counter, as the gladiator was staggering and on the verge of falling. Wulfrin's strike was targeted at the arm carrying the spear. The spear splintered with the blow and was sent flying across the arena. The gladiator, knowing it was defeated, both by its HP being at just above 0 and being rendered completely useless, fell to its knees with its hands raised to the sky in surrender. Wulfrin removed the blade's tip from near the gladiator's throat as the sound of the victory gong rang through the arena.

"Well done," His shadow's voice echoes through his mind. "Crowd is really enjoying your fights. Though your form could still use a bit of work."

"Look," Wulfrin replied with a sigh. "I'm rusty. That was the whole point of coming here."

The third gladiator came from the right gate this time. Wulfrin was feeling the crowd and pumping them up the whole time as the gladiator, great sword in hand charged at Wulfrin. Wulfrin skillfully dodged the swipe by turning his body ninety degrees allowing the lade to move past him with no issue. In the same motion, he jabbed forward with his own blade dealing a sizable chunk of damage to the gladiator's dominant side. A layer of ice formed on its body rendering it immobile as Wulfrin continued to parade around the arena. These battles were becoming less about honing his skills and more about just keeping the crowd from getting up and leaving for concessions. It was the last fight of this round and it would be a shame to deprive them of a stunning final match. Wulfrin was clearly the crowd favorite. He wondered what the numbers were for his success. Would anyone be making a huge profit off his wins? Wulfrin liked to think so.

The gladiator broke free from the icy shackles keeping them in place and rushed Wulfrin once more. This attempt went no better for it than the last. As the gladiator's blade came to bare down on Wulfrin, it was met with only shadow as Wulfrin plunged Icingdeath into the gladiator's back. His foe's HP bar drained rapidly and lit up with the various icons of his DoTs. Once more the ice began to encrust his enemy's form as Wulfrin began to work the crowd even more. Cheers and roars were erupting through out the stands. Wulfrin continued to parade around the battlefield as he waited for the last of his HP to drain. Wulfrin had the fight basically won, so it was time to milk the clout as much as he could.

"So do you have a reason for parading around like a fool?"

"Look I heard you get more money if you work the crowd. Riardon has been short on cash lately and needs a refill. I'm doing the man a favor."

Time ticked on and on as Wulfrin continued his victory tour around the arena. He made it a point to return Icingdeath to its scabbard as to not cause any more unnecessary damage to his foe. It was time to put his newest skill to the test. In an instant Wulfrin's shadow and the gladiator's merged into one, metaphorically linking the two together. The gladiator took no head and charged forth with reckless abandon, only to find the Wulfrin before them to fade into shadow. The real Wulfrin materialized behind them, having traveled via shadow to avoid the strike. With elegant grace, Wulfrin simply maneuvered the gladiator around him harmlessly, content to keep up his untouchable status. With the way he handling the fight, Wulfrin was going to be at full strength for whatever comes after. The gladiator's HP dropped lower and lower, yet it failed to reach the correct level to trigger the mob's surrender.

Once more Wulfrin danced around his unwavering opponent. The gladiator refused to fall despite their dwindling HP. Wulfrin carefully deflected attack after attack, not letting a single one hit his form. He ducked, he weaved, and he dodged just as many strikes before finally leading the gladiator to the center of the arena. The entire time, his eyes fixated on the mob's HP gauge. It fell lower and lower with each tick draining away each of his lingering effects. Had he timed his attacks well? Wulfrin was about to find out. With one final sidestep, his right hand found Icingdeath's hilt and his left foot swept outward tripping the gladiator. Wulfrin held his blade to the throat of his fallen opponent as the last of its HP dissipated. Like the others before it, the gladiator's HP stopped just short of 0 and the mob surrendered shortly after. The gong echoed through the arena as Wulfrin stowed his sword away, his hands finding their resting place in his deep pockets as he returned to his staging area.

"That's the preliminaries out of the way," Wulfrin said as he sat on the bench in his waiting area, the flickering torchlight only barely bright enough to create dim light in the room. "All that's left is to claim the title of champion."

"You've done well," His shadow said in agreeance as it materialized into a physical form across the room form him. "You're learning quickly to harness our power. Though you should remember The Whisper's warnings. If you take on too much too fast, you will see yourself become the void."

"Yeah I know. I'm also just trying to get a grasp on everything. At least I managed to choose an option that doesn't involve my death as a training ground."

"I take it you plan to visit the waterfall afterwards?"

"Probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Perhaps a conversation with my inner self could prove useful."

"You there," The voice of an NPC echoed into the chamber. "Get up. Final match is about to begin."

"You heard them."

"Yup. Time to get to work."

The gate to Wulfrin's holding area opened once again allowing him access to the arena once more. As he made his way to the battlefield, the other three gates opened revealing the three gladiators he had bested in the previous rounds. Something was odd though, he was told there was supposed to be some big time champion fight happen for the preliminaries. The three gladiators and Wulfrin grouped up at the center of the arena and simply stared at each other sharing a collective look of confusion. Then the gong sounded. Following shortly after, was the sound of a heavy impact. Wulfrin turned to face the direction of the disturbance, and what he saw sent a shiver down his virtual spine.

Standing before him and the three gladiators was a middle aged man with an unusable left arm, a massive blade hefted over his shoulder. As the gong sounded once more, chaos erupted. Wulfrin and the three gladiators rushed this newly appeared, Auron, Coliseum Champion. Wulfrin lead the charge, landing a sizeable gash in the boss's form inflicting the devastating shatter effect. The gladiators followed suit, but only one managed to get through the boss's defenses. Auron retaliated with a massive sweep that forced the four warriors to retreat.

"Okay," Wulfrin sighed to himself. "This guy means business."

"I know you're probably still ignoring me," Wulfrin's shadow spoke in his mind. "But it would probably be in your best interest to let me help you with this one."

"No," Wulfrin responded. "I think I got this."

Wulfrin did not in fact have this. Wulfrin pressed the attack further, landing yet another impactful strike against Auron's form. The more he connected the harder he hit thanks in part to the sword art he picked up from facing the Monkey King. The gladiators followed suit. They weren't really doing much but the extra damage was welcome. What they didn't know was this was quite possibly the biggest trap they would fall into. In one fell swoop, Auron swung his massive blade colliding with all but one of the gladiators. Wulfrin also got blasted across the arena, his body locking up.

"So this is what it feels like to be on the receiving end," Wulfrin groaned.

"Yeah," His shadow said mocking him. "Not very fun is it."

Wulfrin recovered from his stun just in time to see the blade of Auron coming down to meet his form.

"Shit!" Wulfrin shouted as he rolled narrowly rolling out of the way.

As he rolled to his feet, he surveyed his current situation. Two of his gladiator allies were down and unmoving. Thankfully Wulfrin had activated his Brawler skill at just the right moment, allowing him to take just a bit more damage than he normally would. The last remining gladiator was managing to keep pressure on Auron, but Wulfrin could tell they were fighting a losing battle.

"Keep hitting him," His shadow urged. "If you let him gain too much momentum you'll never recover."

"Yeah," Wulfrin panted as he pulled himself to his feet. "Let me get right on that."

Wulfrin leveled his blade, ready for the next onslaught of attacks. There was no time to show boat on this one.

"Let's dance," Wulfrin said as he charged forward, locking blades with Auron, Coliseum Champion. 

The sounds of steel rang throughout the arena, Wulfrin had found his stride and he wasn't about to lose it. Blow for blow, Auron matched Wulfrin's pace and skill. Auron prepared to go for another sweeping slash, but this was the moment Wulfrin was waiting for. As the massive sword was about to take out his ankles, Wulfrin jumped, narrowly clearing Auron's head. Mid air, Wulfrin unleashed another of his shattering arts. One look at Auron as Wulfrin landed revealed everything Wulfrin needed to know, Auron's armor was as low as it was going to go. Even better Wulfrin was set up to unleash his most devastating sword art. The remaining gladiator saw the opening and pressed forward putting Auron within a single strike of Wulfrin's blade away from being taken out of the competition.

"One more. That's all I need."

"NOW!" His shadow ordered.

Wulfrin charged forward, his blade glowing the vibrant gold of his Nova Ascension Sword Art. Wulfrin unleashed a volley of heavy sword slashes, each carving deeper and deeper into the champion's form. He didn't dare slow down, partially because the system wouldn't let him, but mostly because he knew that if he did, Auron would recover and press back. Auron desperately attempted to shield himself from Wulfrin's onslaught, but Icingdeath continued to find purchase in the champion's digital flesh. Wulfrin's combo ended with a massive upwards arc that sent both he and Auron into the air. Auron fell with a heavy thud, Wulfrin having depleted the last of the boss's HP.

"And stay down," Wulfrin panted as he eyed his fallen opponent, waiting for them to stand back up. After a few seconds, the final gong sounded and signaled the end of the match. With a smile Wulfrin fell to his knees, fist raised to the sky in victory.

A couple hours of rest was allotted for all parties involved before the award ceremony at the end of the of the day's festivities. Wulfrin was led to the center of the arena, this time not to fight, but to stand face to face with Auron. The previous champion held out a hand in congratulations as the crowd cheered.

"You fought well," Auron said as Wulfrin took his good hand in comradery. "Easily the best challenge I've had in a while."

"Likewise," Wulfrin reciprocated. It felt odd to have the man who was just out to kill him a few hours ago being overly friendly with him. "I hope our blades can cross again some day."

"Perhaps they will warrior. Now that the title is yours, it's your duty to defend it. Hopefully you payed attention to my crowd control skills. The final match is always 4 on 1, the champion being the one to face the other four solo."

"Right. I'll be sure to keep that in mind."

Wulfrin didn't dare mention that he didn't intend to face off with any more combatants for a while. He had things to do, and this was merely a warm up. He was on his own little Breaking the Unbreakable trial run. This was merely the first task, the physical one.

"So," Wulfrin's shadow took physical form next to him as Wulfrin made his way towards the teleport gate of Floor 24. "You've proven you haven't lost your edge physically. What's next?"

"Simple," Wulfrin responded with a slight air of confidence returning. "My next stop on my comeback tour is Floor 6... again."

"You're headed for the waterfall aren't you?"

"That would be the plan. I've cleared my first task, now it's time to hone my mind."

Wulfrin arrived back in Coral on Floor 22, where he would head home and add the small medal he was rewarded in a chest of other meaningless quest rewards. An info panel finally appeared before him declaring quest completion, and that he had unlocked the Stunning Strike skill.

"Didn't we already have that?"

"Didn't we already have that?" Wulfrin and his shadow said in tandem. "Guess it got moved off of Breaking the Unbreakable. Guess I can strike that off my list of easy carry options for new players. That skill will be impossible for them to get. Guess I'm lucky I did the quest when I did."
