down here once more. the rockfall that had blocked out the cave earlier is nowhere to be seen and at its entrance, player and shadow pause to gather themselves before the most difficult challenge of the day. her mind is clear. she's run through the script at least a dozen times. she brings up her interface with a swipe of a gloved hand and bulk summons the buffs she had stored in a folder.

except... she should have checked those, too, because pinball's selection of consumables is enough to stagger a man in the real world.

mishiro looks, dubious, at the bottles laid out in front of her. the scent that emanates from three different flasks of alcohol is almost threatening. she picks up the most innocuous-looking one first -- a [liquor of might], according to its label, and holds it within arm's-length as though it were a bomb slated to explode. her lips thin in the moment that she takes to gather willpower. gently, she clinks it against the bottle in pinball's hand.

"cheers," she says simply.

then she knocks it back.

Back in the hellscape. Pinball was none too pleased; but it was the last time they'd be visiting. Ahead of them was the hardest fight yet, and one that Pinball had come prepared for. They'd packed the consumables a long time in advance... and Pinball hadn't considered the fact that most of the potions he'd gathered had been some type of liquor when he'd gotten them. Mishiro looked at it like she was holding something rigged to explode. And gently, she clinked it against the bottle in Pinball's hand.

Pinball exhaled sharply through his nose. Was that a laugh? "Cheers," he replied. Pinball tossed it back.

Liquor after liquor. He wasn't sure what burned more: the heat of Inferno Cavern, or the alcohol in his throat. After they had chowed down and finished preparing, he'd tell Mishiro, "You lead. I'll follow up on your attacks to keep aggro pulled on me." What he didn't mention is that he'd upgraded a knife with Taunt specifically for this task. He should have no difficulty keeping the attention of the Hellhounds like that -- or at least, he hoped. A herculean endeavor is what awaited them. "Let's go. I'm right behind you."

she comes off of it feeling a little ill. but it's all in her head.

"i'm shopping for us next time," mishiro tells pinball, taking point as instructed. they slip into the narrow passage and in the momentary dark she glances back. "right, and don't hesitate to switch with me, if ever. i can take a few hits."

it's as much of a reminder to herself as it is to him.

the air reaches them before the light does. it is impossibly hotter than before; so thick that every breath taken is an inch short of suffocating. from the shadow of the passage they emerge into the reconstructed cavern and all that meets the eye is bathed in a red-orange hue. light distorts a few centimeters off the ground. sparks burst from haphazardly scattered fires. this time -- cerberus is guarded by only three hellhounds. they pace the grounds hungrily, bodies made of rock, fire dripping from their mouths. then at the first scent of prey, all three heads raise in unison, tails lashing. they start to move as one and she's temporarily rooted to the ground.

how does anyone ever get used to the feeling of being hunted?

(move, lyudochka.)

mishiro does.

Pinball nodded. He'd expected as much. He got pretty close to smiling. "Of course," he replied. He didn't protest.

Mishiro led the way. Pinball followed. She charged in fearlessly, and Pinball was close behind.

He had a knife for each hound. He kept them away from Mishiro and kept them close to him. He was aggressive. Reckless. Usually he'd stay at range, fighting from a distance. It was safer that way, objectively speaking. He abandoned that style now, burying blades in the muzzles and snouts of Hellhounds with rocky, fiery jaws. They went out with a yelp, a whimper, and Pinball did not slow down for a second. Not until he'd sunk his dagger deep into the chest of the last and the cavern was, for a brief moment, filled with an oppressive silence.

And then there was a rumble. A light. Cerberus ascended from a pool of magma. Its eyes were fire. Its jaws foamed with lava. Its growls shook the cavern.

Pinball exhaled softly.

Now the hard part.

as the beasts disperse, she holds her sword hand to eye level, the tips of her gloves singed by the hellhounds’ flames. she rubs her index and thumb together, trying to wear out the encroaching numbness. a thorns effect had taken out a small percentage of her hp and her en is half of her companion’s. she looks to pinball for a verdict. cerberus doesn’t give either of them a chance.

the gatekeeper of fire emerges from the back of the cavern with an earthshaking roar. she almost staggers, her free hand rushing to cover one ear on instinct, and she prises an eye open to take in its full sight. this is not the dog she had ripped two halves of a soul out of. all three heads of cerberus look down on them with eyes made of fire and lava sloshes past the pool’s shores as it begins its advance.

clearing her mind of thought, mishiro flicks her rapier into a ‘ready’ stance.

the first head:

cardinal catches her. she’s charging forward to clash with cerberus before it can even step on solid ground. she draws her sword forward and a whisper of steel scores a line across its jaw, blooming into a larger cut as the head thrashes to snap its teeth at her. she’s gone before it can do any damage and the system-assisted motion lands her a few inches away from the overfilling lava, one knee against the ground.

Mishiro output a much larger amount of damage than he'd expected. That was bad of him. He wasn't sure where the impression that Mishiro couldn't deal damage came from, but he was now resolved to completely uproot that belief. She was holding her own. He was proud of her.

As her Sword Art came to an end, he began his. That was the song and dance of combat, especially when it came to Pinball tanking; you couldn't afford to give the enemy time to change their targets. Tanks had Howl, and Taunt, but Pinball only had the former. That meant that if he wanted to effectively body block any attacks aimed at Mishiro, he'd have to get in there and get his hands dirty.

His form flickered. As he ran through the dark cavern, his weapon glowing, his face seemed to take on the appearance of many different people. Cerberus turned away from Mishiro to face him, and Pinball sank a knife into the snout of one of its massive heads. The head whimpered. The other two snarled. But he could tell by the first's HP value that it was well within the required threshold. Pinball called out to Mishiro: "The next one!"

cerberus has fully emerged from the lake and is coming at them unrestrained. everywhere, fires continue to rage.

(breathe.)

"g-got it!"

she can't help but notice that he's fighting different. pinball likes his distance and surprise attacks but now he's shoving himself between her and the danger at every opportunity. he's swift as always, dancing out of the mob's reach before it could bite and claw at him, but they're both bleeding hp. she doesn't want to know what a direct hit would look like. they have to make this quick.

the second head:

mishiro locks herself into another sword art -- the same one as earlier, as she had instructed herself in her notes -- and marks the middle head as her target. it would've been harder to hit with the other two framing it, but the leftmost one is hanging a bit low, pained after their combined attacks. she comes in from that direction, heat stinging the bottoms of her shoes as she kicks off the top of the injured head as leverage, and scores a heavy blow on the center's neck. wind whistles through her blade's strings, invisible waves burrowing into the inflicted cut. she doesn't have to glance up at its hp to know: she'd overshot it.

she worries the numbers in her head, passing her slip-up on to pinball. "this one's below half. don't hit it too hard."

hopefully he course corrects.

He spins the knives in his hands, deftly, without thinking. He waited for the right opportunity to strike. He leapt backwards, trying to keep his distance, trying to keep it away from focusing on Mishiro. Pinball was succeeding at that. Cerberus followed. It bore down on him with each head in rapid succession. The first chomped nothing but open air, but Pinball had been there just a moment ago. The second did the same, and Pinball saw his opportunity. As the second head was outstretched and vulnerable, he left forward, burying the dagger hilt-deep into the hellhound's rocky snout. It yelped, and no sooner had Pinball let go of the blade did the third head chomp down on him. For a moment that seemed to last much too long, Pinball worried that the head was going to take his arm with it. But he managed to yank himself free, again putting that distance between him and the mob. Though he had taken a particularly nasty attack, Pinball was not shaken by it. He had been in worse spots before. He noted the subsequent drop in his antidote's efficacy absently and remained focused on the task at hand.

"The third, now. Almost done."

her mass heal crystal is in pieces before she can even think. liquid fire lines her throat and it narrows the senses she is so desperately keeping attuned to the flow of the battle. pinball's hp looks too low for what's about to come.

he doesn't have mitigation. that's the half of her build, distressingly underutilized, because, because--

"pinball."

could she not just fell a third of the beast? if only she could live with his disappointment.

"pinball. switch with me on this one! let's divide its attention before it calls the hounds."

the third head:

cerberus is three in one body. if they were torn and she moved opposite, the tug-of-war among its constituent parts might stagger it as a whole. mishiro cuts in front of pinball, the thin blade of her rapier glowing white, and the rightmost head nearly snaps to the side at her forceful blow. a low hiss escapes through her teeth: more burning. the fire is all around them, in her hands, in her artificial veins. she frees her sword of the gatekeeper's flesh, doesn't back off as far as she had been before. her eyes dart around the arena, watching for the second wave.

"No." His reply was practically instant. He wouldn't switch with her. He knew she had mitigation to take a few hits, but what about the Burn? She didn't have an antidote -- he did. If they were able to see the numbers behind the bars, maybe, if they could sit and crunch the numbers, but otherwise...

He could handle it.

The heads tore into him, one after another. He could feel the heat, but not the pain. One of the few perks of Cardinal, he'd once thought, but these days he felt like he'd prefer the feeling of sharp molten fangs digging into his flesh. Anything other than that numbness, that dull vibration that served no other purpose than to alert him he'd been struck. And he felt it twice, one after another. His health plummetted. With practiced hands he tore a crystal free and crushed it. His health bounced up and down. Healing, damage, healing, damage. Somewhere in the struggle, he'd buried a knife into the last head of Cerberus. The beast finally tore away from him and howled.

Pinball went after them. They lunged at him, all teeth and snarls. "Crack the crystals," Pinball told her. "I'm fine. I've got the hounds. Take out the heads."

"but--!"

no time to speak. no time to think. a battle is an instinctual art and mishiro, the dilettante, has hardly learned the steps. red flashes at the periphery of her view, informing her that the system has recognized pinball's denial. his knife digs into cerberus's skull. reinforcements emerge from the surrounding pools of magma and two cerberus heads crash into pinball. she's pushed to the side to make way for his maneuvering as she realizes even the hounds are swerving around her to pile on their master's mark. she can barely see the orange among the red. alcohol washes over her tongue again. crystal pieces in her hand; when did she do that?

she barely hears his call -- focus on the heads? all she sees are six health bars crowding her companion, half of them full, and the memory of his vitality briefly dipping beneath half. it is morbid how they have to grow used to the system counting down to their deaths. walpurgisnacht lights up with an area affecting sword art and mishiro bullies her way back into the chaos, her mind as scattered as her strikes. she rams her blade into the hell hounds, not as delicately as one would with a rapier, but as one might have with its original copy. she shoves one a short distance off with a boot to the side, kicks off that one to chain the last of her energy onto a fatal strike on the first head.

echoes follow like fairy lights on her heel. the effects from pinball's crystal had long since ended; and in its place, the strings of her weapon murmur a dirge.

She cracked the crystal, but she didn't focus on the heads. She went straight for the hounds.

He clicked his tongue. But he thought better of it. What was he supposed to do? Tell her no? He couldn't try to coddle her forever. It was clingy and weird. He tightened his jaw and got his head on straight. That was when the daggers flew. A shiny knife found itself planted in each Hellhound's skull. It was enough to finish them off. The fourth and final landed in the second to last remaining head of Cerberus. It, too, was destroyed. The only head remaining was the third. It made the great, terrifying Cerberus look rather lopsided, although Pinball didn't feel much for the monster at all.

Over the course of the fight, it had proven itself almost not worth the trouble. Almost. Pinball exhaled, the light in his blades fading with the deactivation of the Sword Art. His eyes flicked from the wounded beast to Mishiro.

the whispers stop.

three hounds and another head are gone and she nearly drops to the ground herself. in her periphery she thinks she glimpses the barest suggestion of pinball's image behind a curtain of triangles but she doesn't look. mishiro comes up to cerberus and walpurgisnacht drinks the last of her energy. she swings, sinks the blade deep into the remaining head's neck. the entire body splits into thirds. cerberus, inferno's rage, falls.

in its owner's wake, the temperature of the cavern slowly drops. fires dampen as though they had been fueled by cerberus' soul alone. mishiro takes her first full breath in (what had felt like) a long while. then, fluttering to the side, her eyes catch pinball's. she sheathes her blade but keeps her sword hand free. the other one drifts to a point below his collarbone when she reaches him, the flat of her thumb barely skirting the edge of the largest cut. "pin. i'm sorry." already, flesh and armor is mending itself. her expression twists. she's too weary; her touch is barely even there. "i don't know what happened. i was trying to catch some of the second wave's aggro but they wouldn't even look at me. are you feeling okay?"

she lets her hand fall, eyes wandering to a window she had minimized in her haste. "it's done," she realizes. "we got your sword art."

"There's nothing to be sorry about." That reply, at least, came instantly.

There was something about seeing her in the dying light that made her look delicate. Frail?

Incorporeal? Like a ghost? A spirit? Something that could vanish with a touch.

He had to stop thinking about her like that.

Pinball felt his heart begin to race and he broke eye contact. "I'm perfectly fine," he assured her. "Are you alright?" His fingers slid across his menu's interface. His other hand rested gently on her shoulder. He found it. The water canister materialized in his hand. He took a sip first and handed the rest to her. "Here. Drink this." He passed the canister off and let his hand fall, too. Pinball couldn't remember how it got there.

"It's done," he said. He exhaled. Relief. "Are you--"

He stopped himself. "Actually," he said, "let's get out of here first. Come on."

she's still tracing the line of cerberus' claws with her eyes. he had looked back at her, once, in that close, watchful way of his that leaves her feeling torn, then something else drew him from her, and had she not already pulled away, and were they in any other place than this, she might have, thoughtlessly, curled the hand she was holding him with into a loose fist. crumpled the layer of his cloak into her palm. mooring. -- what is it? tell me. -- his hand is on her shoulder and she can’t make distance. if he says so, she thinks. she tries to cut herself from the tangled spool of the rest of her thoughts, but if she isn't, by some unknown circumstance, forgetting, she's compulsively keeping score. guilt is their shared bedfellow.

the words come to her like auguries in a fog. "...i am." she smiles, faint. almost wry. "i wasn't the one taking all those attacks. just... the usual fatigue, i think. and the thorns.”

her energy hasn’t been this low in two years. the tiredness that hits her is unnatural. foreign. but it will pass. mishiro takes the canister pinball holds out to her with a murmur of thanks, and as they slip out of the cavern before it begins its routine collapse, she takes small sips from it, pacing herself through her vertigo. there is still a third remaining when she offers it back to pinball once they are safely outside. “i could still go for that dungeon. higher is better for these things, if i recall correctly--?”

He couldn't tell if she was being truthful. Pinball hesitated. They could just head back to Green Garden, or call it early; he wasn't used to seeing her so exhausted. Could she last a dungeon? Did she really want to try? He led her out of Inferno Cavern, sure to keep a watchful eye on her. Mishiro offered the canister back and Pinball accepted it, flicking his wrist and discarding it back to whatever corner of his inventory it had been lying in before. She told him she could still go for the dungeon.

"Are you sure?" He was afraid to come across as though he were doubting her. "We could always come back."

If she wanted to take a longer break, he would. He could always do it later with her, or even by himself. He answered her question regardless.

"But... yes. Kind of. Most rewards stay the same, except the crafting materials. Do you want to go to a higher floor?"

“i am,” mishiro insists. suddenly conscious, she crosses an arm over herself, fingernails digging into the opposite elbow. the thick fabric of her gloves dulls the bite. “thanks for asking. really. i’ll… recover on the way there.”

they need a little more time.

“and if my energy hits full capacity and i still feel off, i promise i’ll tell you. how is yours already restored? surely not the water? i hope i didn’t drink the water wrong, otherwise we are really calling this off.”

she eyes their status bars, jealous, for just a second longer before she starts to busy herself with her interface. she doesn’t need to remind herself -- as a crafter, she keeps materials in excess, and her position allows her to withdraw from the guild vaults without much fuss. but she’ll lessen the demand on the treasury as much as she is able. “highest possible,” mishiro confirms. from her inventory comes a match pair of teleport crystals, one of which she hands over to him. “i’m ready. you call it this time.”

Pinball was hesitant, but he took her at her word. "Alright. But tell me."

They slowed to a stop.

Pinball snorted. Another laugh? "No, it's not the water. It's a housing buff. Makes you heal and recover energy faster out of combat." He looked at her. A little quieter, he added, "I could get you one, if you'd like. I've got the rooms to spare."

He shrugged, wanting suddenly to drive home the impression that it would be no big deal at all. He had the money, he had the rooms; what he didn't want was for her to feel pressured by it. "Your choice, of course. Let me know."

Pinball accepted the crystals. He pressed one into her hand. He didn't let go until he'd shattered both.

"Teleport: Glyndebourne."

Their surroundings were wiped clean. By the time they opened their eyes and took in the perpetually autumnal city of Glyndebourne, Pinball was gone.

"ah. a house?" tented hands raise to her lips; she feels faintly embarrassed. one would think, having lived in sibyl's estate all these years, that she would have pried through the mechanics behind it enough times to remember. so far, all she had troubled herself with was the security system. "i never needed that before. it must have slipped my notice. but, pin..." they had stopped and the question hung in the air. lost, mishiro gentles her next words. "i'd hate to impose."

she does wonder where the line is, sometimes.

the teleport whisks them away to glyndebourne. mishiro, blinking her eyes open, taking in the fresh homely air, belatedly realizes that pinball, on honoring her request, had brought her to the frontlines. it doesn't look the part. it rather looks like a town she would have dreamed of making a home in. the disparity catches in the back of her mind but her relief at stepping into friendlier surroundings after floors 5 and 9 drowns it out. without additional directions from pinball, she defaults to heading for the nearest gate out of the safe zone, trusting her shadow to be close behind. there is less weight to her steps as she sheds the weariness of a drained energy bar.

yellowed leaves drift to the pavement. "do you like autumns, too?" she muses to empty air.

  • 2 weeks later...

"You wouldn't be," he assured her. His mind was already made up on the matter; but he'd let it rest. They linked arms and vanished in a pillar of light.

Glyndebourne. Pinball had never been. There had never been a reason for him to. The floor was certainly pretty, but he'd stopped visiting places for the views alone. He mostly kept to himself, wandering the dark stone halls of Green Garden and working his way through the sometimes admittedly boring tomes collecting dust in his library. He left to quest, occasionally, and not for much else. But there was something about the city that seemed so relaxed. Yellowed leaves drifted to the pavement. The air was crisp. He heard Mishiro's question but could not reply. He followed close behind.

It wasn't long after they'd left the safe zone that Pinball reappeared beside her. "We don't need to go far. Here is fine." He'd already retrieved the dungeon map from his inventory. Pinball stood among some dense foliage and opened it. There was a brief glow -- and then a staircase materialized before them, hidden by the sparse shrubbery off the path. That was unusual. Usually dungeons were incorporated into the floor. Maybe it was because he'd activated it so close to the safe zone that it needed to generate something unorthodox. Oh, well. Pinball took the lead. "Should be easier than Cerberus." How many times had he said that already?

It was a square, stone room. In the corner was a tree, orange and yellow like all the rest above ground. No sooner had they entered did they get aggressive. It was a coyote pack, four of them, and their snarls reverberated across the empty stone room. Pinball flipped his blades into his hands and leapt forward. Each of the coyotes found a knife buried in their sides. They collapsed, their limbs failing them. The perfect opening for Mishiro to finish them off, if possible.
