Thread takes place following the events of Echoes of the Void

"Look's like the plan worked," Wulfrin said as his gladiatorial disguise faded. "What do you think Abdullah will think about us crashing his party?"

Wulfrin had caught wind that Abdullah, a recurring thorn in his side, was hosting some sort of a gladiatorial tournament. Something about some prized alligator dude that the denizens of Fortaleza were naming The Butcher in The Sands. As it so happened, Wulfrin was looking for a way to ease himself back into action after his recent run in with his Gemini. Freyd had helped him out of the slump and sort of passed on a torch of sorts, since he was stepping away from dealing massive damage, to become a giant aggro drawing chew toy.

Wulfrin had only recently picked up Freyd's custom skill, so wearing the appearance of someone else was still somewhat of an odd feeling. It did have its perks though. For one it made it incredibly easy to get past the sign ups. Now the duo found themselves secluded in a staging area. Apparently the two of them were the only two courageous, or stupid depending on who you asked, to sign up to face the so called butcher. 

"I personally am relishing in the luck to finally be proactive against the dude," Wulfrin remarked as he adjusted his gear in preparation. "Dude's been doing nothing but make it a personal mission of his to harass me anytime I'm on Floor 5. Honestly, I'm beginning to wonder if he isn't a rogue Gemini that decided to take up the aristocratic life. It's odd to draw that much attention from a quest NPC when you don't have an orange cursor."

"The man's an arrogant, abusive fop, but I'm not prepared to assign him greater moustache-twirling status than he hasn't properly earned."  Freyd had simply opted to hide within the confines of his armor, penning the pseudonym of 'Kuro bara no kishi' - black knight of the rose - based on an emblem he'd manifested on his left pauldron.  It seemed poetic enough to entice and satisfy the unsophisticated crowd, aided by an underlayment of accuracy.  His rose would understand.  No one else need be any the wiser.

"Abdullah is manipulative thorn, but tweaking his thorns too readily may not be in our best interest.  NPCs have the occasionally irksome ability to respawn; not exactly a quality you want in a nemesis.  Granted, it's not true in all cases.  Still... cutting one of his supposed champions down to size is never a bad idea and remains a good place to start.  It's also been a very long time since Sando and I crossed blades - probably since I last actually had a blade to wield.  So why not, even if only for nostalgia's sake and a bit of swordcraft style crafting?"

Drawing a curved sliver of pure void from its sheath, Freyd grinned beneath his closed helm and facemask, its vaguely demonic facial features roiling in shifting shadows like any suitably frightening figure should.  Sando wouldn't care, but they were building a reputation here.  Might as well get it started on the right foot.

"This guy loves to ignore aggro, as I recall.  Stun his ass, and he won't last long, not to mention the sheer humiliation of having his backside handed to him without even getting a swipe.  Abdullah would be ridiculed, and therefore pissed."

"Oh trust me," Wulfrin smirked as the gates began to open. "I'm fully aware I wont be getting anywhere near Abdullah himself. I'm like ninety percent sure Cardinal wont let me get there. I do however hope to maybe deal a blow to his network, hopefully a big enough one to get him off my back."

Wulfrin gave a thumbs up in regards to Freyd's gameplan as he moved towards the gate. A quest panel appeared before him. Without hesitation, Wulfrin tapped the accept icon and stepped into the sand filled arena. Once both of the fighters were in the arena, the portcullis gate fell back into place behind them, sealing them into the arena. The crowd was in an uproar, and why wouldn't they be? Today they were promised a blood bath. They were half right. Wulfrin scanned up to the box seats where the aristocratic families would watch in lavished luxury. Wulfrin's eyes fixed on one in particular. Abdullah the NPC who usually did nothing more than try and act like he was owed a favor by players that went out into the sandy wasteland to slaughter a constantly respawning mob. Wulfrin gave a small two fingered salute to the NPC that had been an obstacle for far to long.

The sound of a gong echoed through the arena and the crowd fell silent. Icingdeath was drawn from its scabbard, its icy mist beginning to collect on the sandy ground. The sands began to shift as something below the ground raced towards them. It was fast but not fast enough. With blinding speed, Wulfrin moved to meet the figure beneath the sands. Bursting forth, a large humanoid alligator of sorts with a massive jagged blade ready to tear them asunder. Tera Firma was much faster though. Wulfrin's blade cut upwards through the air, slicing from abdomen to collar bone, sending the charging foe flying backwards in an upwards arc. Sando Satsu landed a few feet back from where the two had clashed, it's form becoming a frozen statue of it's former glory. The crowd roared as Wulfrin began to pivot around the incapacitated foe. Wulfrin gestured to the frozen target as if to signal to Freyd, "You're up."

Plodding by comparison to his more nimble ally, Freyd strode forward with relentless purpose.  Reaching to his side, the black samurai slunk a katana black as an eclipse from its sheath, the blade absorbing all light and casting no shadows upon the ground.  Sando was a sitting duck... a sitting reptilian duck... weird... as Samael's Pride snapped its widthless blade across his chest, tearing a vicious streak of orange open on his avatar's mesh.

The crowd roared.  Some boo-ed, but they had likely cast bets in favour of the wrong side.  This moment would teach them better for the future.  It wasn't like Freyd and Wulfrin would receive any of the winnings anyways.  Sando cricked and twitched, breaking himself freeze from his rimed prison and growling savagely at the two players, though to little actual intimidating effect.

"That might work better if your health bar was drilling for oil, you overgrown gecko."  

Freyd did so love to antagonize certain mobs, when the circumstances warranted.

The battle was over as fast as it had started. Wulfrin's swift opening had rendered the croc incapacitated long enough for Freyd and Solaris to land heavy hits of their own. Wulfrin let out a small chuckle at Freyd's small jab at the champion's behest. Wulfrin stepped forward and unleashed one final sword art into the Sando's hide, the emerald green light bursting on impact and fracturing what few bits of armor the croc wore. It wasn't as grandios as the crowd had wanted. There were clearly more boos than cheers in the crowd. a quick check of Abdullah's booth revealed the aristocrat talking in hushed tones to one of his servants. Clearly the conversation wasn't going well. Even from down here, Wulfrin could tell the result was not what Abdullah had hoped for.

"So," Wulfrin spoke in hushed tones to his heavily armed companion. "What do you think his next move will be? I wouldn't be surprised if he just up and left, but given his track record, he'll probably through some of that wealth around and change the event a bit."

Antagonizing NPCs really doesn't suit you. Wulfrin's shadow commented directly into his mind.

A squad of assassins burst forth from the sand, each appearing at a different cardinal point around the players. Katars held high, they moved to strike as one - a well trained team - only to find that one of their targets had already disappeared.  Flitting from shadow to shadow, Freyd snared their blades and bound their clothing, suffocating each in turn from within their respective umbras.  A moment later, he was back at Wulfrin's side, their four would-be assailants  crumbling to dust in a very pretty patters all around them.

The crowd was stunned into silence, then broke into a raucous cheer at the display.  Freyd looked up at Abdullah, who looked most displeased.  Grinning, the black samurai held his blade high, stirring the adulation of the crowd, just to rub it a little bit harder into the NPC's face.

"How much coin do you think he spent on this lot?  Nowhere near enough, obviously.  Next bunch should be more entertaining."

"Whatever their price was," Wulfrin chuckled as he prepared for an attack of his own. "Doesn't look like it was enough."

Khopeshes at the ready, the two new significantly less sneak attack focused, mercenaries rushed into the sandy arena from the east and west gates. Wulfrin gave off a smirk as he pivoted around Freyd and disappeared into the shadows. For the briefest of seconds, there appeared to be two of him, one behind each of the mercenaries. In a unified attack the two Wulfrins attacked in tandem. Both mercenaries found their feet swept out from under them and an express one way ticket face first into the sandy arena pit. The one from the east ended up freezing over as it attempted to recover, an interesting sight to behold considering it was high noon in a desert.

"For an Aristocrat that enjoys letting coin solve his problems," Wulfrin retorted as he appeared with his back to Freyd's. "You'd think he'd have some higher skilled mooks on payroll. What else do you think he has in store for us? Some exotic beast or will it be just another wave of mooks after these ones?"

Wulfrin continued to entice the crowd. Abdullah was, as he suspected, less than amused as Wulfrin mirrored Freyd's pose.

"Let's give 'em a show."

"The price is never enough," Freyd replied, his voice somehow undistorted by the roiling shadows of his helm's face plate, which also concealed the Whisper's smirk as he watched his companion use a familiar-looking trick.  If Abdullah was at all capable of memory, and Freyd believed he was, this combat should already have revealed their identities.  Or his, at least, few yet being aware of Wulfrin's adoption of the same brand.  

"Careful.  You keep this up and he's gonna start thinking you're me.  And, handsome as I may be, I don't think you want that kind of bullseye on the back of your head."  Or price, he reminded himself.  Freyd had already found multiple bounties from past acquaintances place on his name.  He'd even placed a couple himself, as false flags, to root out the sources of the rest.  Reputation meant a lot, in his business.

Sidestepping with a single, precise cut, darkness cleaved the two mobs.  One lost his head, literally, crumbling into crushed ice that quickly evaporated in the heat.  The other staggered back, his health bar looking about as healthy as your average Fortalezan street rat.

"Part of me wonders if he has the guts to actually come down here and fight, but I'd honestly be amazed if he did.  Courage and conviction aren't exactly his style."

"What can I say," Wulfrin shrugged in response to The Whisper's warning. "I learned from the best."

Wulfrin rushed the final mercenary that was only just beginning to unfreeze. Unfortunately for them, Wulfrin had already appeared above him and planted his blade in its back. Ice encased its form once more before vaporizing in the desert heat. So far everything that Abdullah had thrown at them was simply cannon fodder. Wulfrin returned to Freyd's side, Icingdeath over his shoulder. Wulfrin smirked a bit as his appearance morphed to a near identical copy of Freyd's only pre tank swap.

"Honestly," Wulfrin said mimicking Freyd's voice. "I'd pay some serious col to see that man get off his gilded throne and actually lift a finger for once." Wulfrin reverted his form to normal. "Honestly that cat's done left the bag. Best to just keep on my toes. Got that whole Dread Pirate Roberts schtick going on. I might even take over the Sharkbait Training Program one of these days as a trial run. Just gotta get me a vial of that elven armor salve from floor 3 to make up for my lack of hate gen."

Abdullah's glare could have shattered ice the same way Wulfrin had just done, save from several hundred feet away.

"Wow... that NPC really hates me.  Well, you, as me, but really meaning me.  Interesting.  I've been pushing his buttons for months to see whether it would make a difference.  It certainly seems to have.... oh.  And he just stabbed a lackey.  Yeah.  I'd call this a successful experiment, in an unfortunate sort of way.  At least that dude will respawn eventually, I hope?"

Freyd seemed pensive for a moment, as if pondering myriad possibilities in that 'brain equals bag of cats' kind of way he always had about him.

"Think we should mess with him just a little bit more?  I want to see what happens when he sees the other side of the looking glass."

Pinching his face plate at the chin dissolves the mask of shadows to reveal a familiar face, but certainly not the one Abdullah had been expecting: his own.  Even at this distance, both players could see the fop's eyes widen like saucers, as if demons were taunting him with his own face.

"You wanted a challenge?  I think he might just pull out all the stops after that little stunt."

"One can only hope," Wulfrin watched the lackey disintegrate into a shower of motes up in Abdullah's booth. "He is just kind of proving my point to be fair."

Wulfrin watched as Freyd dismissed his helmet revealing Abdullah's face. He let loose a small chuckle at the continued taunts. It was clear Abdullah was absolutely nettled. The aristocrat was barking orders and turning heads from the crowd only there for an entertaining pit fight. Several inaudible due to distance orders and the larger gate to at the northern end of the coliseum began to drop. A massive beast with the head, body, and tail of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle let out a massive roar as it leapt into the arena. Clearly it's wings were clipped in such a way as to prevent it from flying out of the open arena.

"Interesting," Wulfrin said as he analyzed the beast before them. "I would have figured he use some poetic justice and send the field boss our way, but this is probably just as interesting. Same as before? I stun you follow up?"

Wulfrin didn't need a reply, as he had worked with Freyd long enough to know the plan without even having to ask, he just simply wanted to extend the courtesy of asking. Wulfrin dipped into the shadows at the duo's feet only to reappear behind the griffin. With one massive strike from behind, the flightless bird lion thing fell prone in front of Freyd as ice began to encase its form and voxic venom began to work though its internal systems.

"Ring a ding ding," Wulfrin chuckled as he made his way back to Freyd. "Soup's on!"

Unbidden, a tiny head with rounded ears perked up from within Freyd's armor at the mention of soup.  Persi's disappointment was palpable over the complete absence of soup.  Though not as fine as a good bowl of ether, the tiny shadow mongoose had an infinite appetite for all things nom-nommable, and liquids were second only to vapours, in her book.  Darting lazily off to the side as the two men tenderized chilled griffon meat, she couldn't help wonder whether it tasted like chicken, and yearned to find out.

"You're up next, Persi," Freyd offered, taking a running charge and the discombobulated beast while yanking it towards him with a recently acquired meathook.  The two collided in a painful clash of blade and wing, moreso for the latter. "Uh... don't think this thing's gonna be flying against anytime soon."

A puff of feathers burst into fractal motes leaving behind a very lopsided monster, it's right eye twitching like a glitching turn signal at the sudden absence of its left wing.

"Nice hit, Wulfrin.  We've put a good dent into it already. But let's keep our eyes open just in case.  Abdullah's not at all the type to play fair."

"Sorry to disappoint Persi," Wulfrin sighed realizing the mistake. "You can have some Griffin though."

Wulfrin pivoted to the boss's haunches. Icingdeath became wreathed in the emerald hued light of Florenthian Howl. The griffin began to stumble as the blade carved into its hide. The tell tell signs of the shatter stacking continued to spread across the boss's form. This time around there was no freeze or stun from Wulfrin, so Wulfrin pivoted past Freyd and prepared for a retaliatory strike. Wulfrin's gaze trailed towards their aristocratic target's booth. Perched above it was Solaris, keeping an ever watchful eye for any unintended interruptions. Wulfrin decided against calling his familiar in this moment as the additional pair of eyes were far more valuable.

"Oh believe me," Wulfrin remarked in response to Freyd's warning. "I'm keeping eyes on him. Well Solaris is. If he makes a move, we'll know about it. Though getting his own hands dirty isn't really in character for him."

Something about their strange predicament seemed to encourage Freyd's pretentious pet, her tiny head bobbing up from behind the griffon as she collided with its good side and sent it spiraling head over absent wing.  Despite her diminutive size and strong silent type approach to everything, Persi's sheer moxy could not be overstated. It had once been claimed that she ate field bosses for breakfast, yet even that felt like an understatement.

Moving in step with Persi's strike, Freyd's blade was waiting with an upward cut that bit deep, cascading the boss' health into endgame territory.  Already yellow, verging on red, its health bar plummeted with its loss of plumage while its supposed master cried out in rage.

"Might be just about time to wrap a bow around this show and call it done.  Feel like you have one more shatter left in you, for old time's sake?"

Raiding his Pride high, the Whisper poised himself for what might very well be the killing blow.

"You know me Freyd," Wulfrin said shooting a thumbs up. "I always have an extra shatter in me."

Wulfrin apparated behind Misttalon. Icingdeath's icy mist began to freeze even the scorched ground of the arena as its blade began to emit an emerald light effect, signaling the start of his sword art. With a heavy downward swing, Misttalon, Abdullah's Prized Griffon, staggered forward, it's body writhing from the combined effects of Shatter, Toxic Venom, and Frostbite. With a grin Wulfrin slowly marched his way back to Freyd, arms urging the crowd to cheer louder and louder. Misttalon became a frozen statue as Wulfrin returned to Freyd's side.

"I'll give you the honor," Wulfrin said as he gave two quick pats on Freyd's armored shoulder. "Make it flashy. We have a point to prove."

Abdullah must be able to tell it wasn't going to end in his victory. He called over another henchman, that was very clearly apprehensive, and pulled an ornate dagger on them. In a few moments another shower of fractal motes surrounded the Aristocrat. When he looked back to the arena, his fury only increased as he met his own face smirking back in victory, Wulfrin having shifted his features to match the enraged aristocrat.

We have at least succeeded in one goal today.

Nodding to acknowledge Wulfrin's request, Freyd then turned his black, faceless gaze up to the stands.  Raising his ebon blade high and pointing it towards the arena's distraught patron, silence fell over the crowd.  No one threatened Abdullah.  No one.  A quarter turn was all it took, twisting the tang of the impossible thin blade like a key.  Where once contained by the slimmest of holy seals, the hush pervading their battlefield was instantly shattered by the keening wail of oblivion's hunger.  The void's maw sat open, unfettered and free to unleash its infinite hunger.  Sand whipped all around the back armored figure, suctioned into the hole in space held in his hand.  Freyd clenched and grit his teeth behind the face mask, feeling his weapon gnaw at the very fabric of his hands.  Skin peeled away to expose the orange lattice mesh of his avatar, yet he held steady.  Its bite had grown all too familiar with age.

Pausing for effect, a great dust devil claimed the arena floor, threatening to overwhelm everything within its walls until a single downward flash.  The griffon's head fell to the floor, Samael's Pride having devoured the bulk of its thick neck down the beast's powerful shoulders with its passage.  Sword art delivered, the seals restored, silence reclaimed the field while the crowd sat stunned by the act of defiance they'd just witnessed.

As the last grain of sand found solace on the ground once more, Misttalon's remaining form flopped sideways devoid of any remaining power or grace, and popped into a big old bag of death-popcorn to the exploding cheers of the crowd.

Their point was made blatantly clear. This was an open challenge from the two Shadows to their Aristocratic patron. It was a feat that as far as Wulfrin was aware, hadn't been done before. That didn't mean it didn't feel absolutely justified. Abdullah seemed to be one of the few NPCs that was capable of some semblance of memory, their little experiment today basically proved that. Abdullah was fuming from up in his precious box seat. Freyd's blade pointed directly at their target. A simple twist and Pandora's Box was unleashed. As the dust settled, so too did Misttalon. That poor griffon had no chance to fight back. The crowd was absolutely eating it up though, so silver ling there.

"Well," Wulfrin said as he dusted himself off. "You certainly didn't disappoint. Perhaps we call it here yeah?"

Just as he spoke the coliseum guards made their way out to dish out their earnings. It wasn't a terribly large amount, but hey at least it was something.

"Agreed," came Freyd's reply, his gaze still locked on their informal nemesis.  Freyd swore he saw wisps of steam trailing from Abdullah's over-gelled pink anime-punk reject hairdo as he stormed out of his private box.  "As entertaining and informative as this has been, we've likely pushed our luck to its limits.  Best to take our winning and go.  He'd probably calling in every merc and assassin on this floor, right now, placing bounties on the heads of whoever he thinks we are.  The precision of his surmise will tell us more, but you might want to sleep in a safe place tonight, nowhere near here.  I'll plan to do the same."

Accepting the guard's offerings with apparent disregard, Freyd actually scanned the contents seriously, with his appraiser's eye, to determine whether anything might have been tampered.  If it was him, he'd have put something inside that could be tracked.  Better to quarantine their rewards until he could complete a more detailed assessment.

By the time they reached the other end of the arched masonry corridor leading them out of the arena, Freyd's appearance had shifted to that of a desert nomad.  Black turban and shoulder raps carefully embroidered with the patterns of black roses in silk on coarser cotton, the authenticity of the disguise was surprising.

"I've spent a lot of time on this floor, and Persi hasn't seen her family in some time.  Now seems like as good a time for a visit as any.  Thanks again for the mischief, brother."  A light punch on Wulfrin's shoulder, matched with a leathery grin from some borrowed face and he made ready to depart.

"As far as I'm aware," Wulfrin said with a chuckle, his appearance having shifting to that of a simple desert nomad. "My choice of lodging is beyond even his reach. You're the appraiser, so I'm going to leave my earnings with you for now. When you're sure they're clean, we can properly divvy everything up."

Wulfrin's appearance wasn't nearly as well put together as Freyd's. Aside from the changing of wardrobe to a simple white turban and lightly colored lightweight silks designed to keep a person as cool as possible, the few facial features were nearly identical to his own, save a few minor detractions only barely enough to make someone second guess themselves. The ability to change his physical appearance was still a new concept to him, and practice was necessary to truly master this deceptive skill.

"Take care of yourself, brother," Wulfrin responded with a similar punch to Freyd's shoulder. "Thanks for your help today. I'll see you at the raid. Unless of course you want to stir up some more mischief elsewhere, in that case hit me up. You know where to find me."

Wulfrin made his way to the teleport gate at the center of Fortaleza. In a flash of blue light he stepped off the teleport gate of coral. As he took his step, his appearance trailed off of him as steady streams of shadowy mist that took physical form next to him.

"Nice work," Wulfrin's shadow said in an oddly encouraging tone.

"Thanks?" Wulfrin spoke under his breath. "What's up with the sudden tone change?"

"Nothing. Just giving credit where credit is due."

Wulfrin made his way home and double checked every lock in the house as the day came closer and closer to its end. Bet Ciela thinks I'm loosing my damn mind. Wulfrin thought to himself as he lay down to rest. I mean it's not an inaccurate assumption. There was that familiar mocking tone from his new tag along. Shut up dude. I'm trying to sleep.

"Always up for more trouble," Freyd replied, watching his counterpart drift into the distance while he transferred equivalent funds his way from his own accounts.  Even a modest, perfectly reasonable debt wasn't something he could stand for long.  It wasn't in his nature to allow himself to remain in that state, like some sort of IOU-based sword of Democles was hovering over his head.  It was irrational, yet also hyperrational, in the upside down world of spies and spycraft where favours were worth more than platinum.  Besides which, he already had other responsibilities of a kind that were far more open-ended.

"Come on, Persi.  The den's not that far and we can still make it before nightfall."  Twin azure orbs popped up from his armor like a prairie dog sitting eagerly upright on its haunches.  Twilight was always the best time of day for shadow mongooses, where their presence in this world was strongest, yet also most fleeting.  Freyd had once watched the whole pack stretch out atop the tallest desert butte, their natural forms blending with the last and longest shadows of the day before subsuming into night.  It was sublime and heartwarming, in its own way, to see shadows play as they slipped into a world without light, where the might never feel alone.
