File A | History

Spoiler

Robert Singer was born on September 7, 1958, and was an only child. When Bobby was young, his father's health rapidly deteriorated upon developing Huntington’s disease, and all the good memories that friends and family tried to implant in the boy’s head never supplanted the terrifying memory of visiting his father in the hospital just before his death. He remembered the twisted body, the empty eyes that didn't seem to focus on him, the terrible disinfectant smell of the hospital, and his breathing: Walt described it as “this rattling sound like if you were shaking an empty spray paint can—like there was nothing in him”. He was tested for Huntington's disease as a child; the test results returned negative. He was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Bobby studied at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he proved himself a brilliant chemist with a specialty in X-ray crystallography. In 1985, Bobby's groundbreaking research regarding photon radiography contributed to a project that was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures.

Following his education, Bobby went on to found Molecular Frontier. Eventually, Bobby sold his company, and Molecular Frontier became a highly successful, multi-billion dollar company that he had no ties to. Bobby would come to feel that the fruits of his hard labor had been stolen from him and bitterly blamed the buyers, despite the fact it was his own decision to leave. Bobby refused to acknowledge his own failures for leaving Molecular Frontier and regretted his decision of leaving and selling out.

By the turn of 1990, Bobby was working in Physica Labs. He moved back to Albuquerque to work for Catalyst Solutions just prior to his firstborn's birth. In Albuquerque, he and his wife settled into a home, despite his desire for a larger house in light of recent business success.

Bobby lost his position at Catalyst Solutions and he eventually went on to become a chemistry teacher at the local highschool, where his son, also attended as a student. He became the Chair of the Science Department. Financially, this job was not enough to support his family, so his wife did side work writing short stories and selling items on the internet. When his wife became pregnant with their second child, however, Robert took on a degrading second job at a car wash.

To escape the rapidly disentigrating life around him, Bobby turned to the newest game on the market. A fully immersive MMORPG called Sword Art Online that promised to provide an escape. Now that he has become trapped in this supposed death game, Robert relies on his intensive study of chemistry and physics to further his progression. He even found that players were willing to pay a pretty penny for "Performance Enhancers", sparking the idea that if he got back he could use his knowledge of the sciences to provide a more profitable life for his family, and here there were plenty of test subjects.
