[SP-PT-F03] [Tier Lock: T1] Like Stealing Salve from an Elf

For the first time in several cycles of Cardinal's ever shifting day night system, Wulfrin found himself traveling to Floor 3. There weren't many reasons to come here, mainly just to participate in a prison break quest and mini golf in a maze. Wulfrin's attention however was pulled towards something else entirely. His target was a fugitive dark elf named Yeff. He was told that they were some sort of escaped criminal, though the information was rather plain. As it turns out, it was just some player trying to pull a fast one on him. After a bit of digging, Wulfrin did come to realize that the Field Boss of Floor 3 had an item he was particularly interested in, the Elven Armor Salve. This reusable item was crucial to his plan of taking on the responsibility of hosting the Sharkbait Training Program for the influx of new players striving to join the frontlines.

"Best start looking for Yeff," Wulfrin said to himself as he stepped off the teleport gate in Aryut. "Solaris. Mind giving me some eyes?"

His familiar obliged. The small phoenix took to the skies above and began to search for their target. Wulfrin, knowing full well that this was going to be a rather simple trip, came prepared for the inevitably short fight. His intent was to turn the day into a nice grind for col, mats, and hopefully a few demonic shards and gleaming scales. His usual weapon of choice, Icingdeath, remained safely stored in his battle-ready inventory in case things went south. Wulfrin tabbed through various menus until he came to the tier locking slider. He had only used this feature when giving new players a boost, but this time it was for another purpose. The boss itself was going to force him down for a considerable amount of time, long enough that any other grinding he was thinking about doing would be near impossible without risking death. HE opted to manually adjust himself to avoid that inevitable conclusion. He brought his level down just inside the Tier 1 threshold.

It only took a handful of hours to locate Yeff. The waning hours of night time within the Forest of Wavering Mist was not making it easy, but thanks to the combined abilities of Solaris and his Night Vision Mod, Wulfrin was managing to make decent progress. He followed the elf for a few moments until they approached a clearing perfect for ambushing his target.

"Alright Yeff," Wulfrin said as he stepped out of the shaded woods, reveling himself. "Time to hand over your salve. I kind of need it for helping out some friends."

The dark elf jumped a bit before drawing a beautifully crafted elven short sword. Wulfrin's blade was already cutting across the elf's front as a burst of emerald energy fractured the light armor that Yeff was wearing. The elf staggered back, taking a defensive stance. Clearly the element of surprise had been lost. The stance was so perfect Wulfrin couldn't see any openings. With a whistle Solaris swooped in and began to harry the elf, who remained completely unfazed.

Wulfrin continued his assault against Yeff, The Darkest Elf. His blade erupted with the emerald light of Florenthian Howl as he brought it to bare against his elven foe. Yeff brought his blade to meet Wulfrin's, causing the blow to only graze his form. Great. Dude can Parry. Wulfrin thought to himself as he pivoted around Yeff. What he didn't expect was Yeff spinning around to follow him and thrust his blade outward. The pain receptors buzzed a bit in Wulfrin's right shoulder as Yeff, The Darkest Elf removed its blade from the wound. Wulfrin's HP barely moved, though that wasn't surprising. Even when he wasn't wearing armor at the same caliber like the one he wore now, he was able to negate most of the damage form incoming attacks. His energy was his biggest concern.

Bringing his level down was a risk. Most of his sword arts were fairly high energy costs considering the level of choice. After two strikes, his energy had already depleted to less than half. The good news, one strike was all he needed to finish the job.

Wulfrin went for Yeff's sword arm this time. The Delaying Strike sword art found it's mark with precision. Solaris pulled back as the darkest elf's blade clattered to the ground. Not long after, Yeff's HP dropped to zero. Within the scattering of his fractal motes of light, Wulfrin noticed a small vial on the ground. Picking it up and opening it's info menu revealed that it was in fact the item he was looking for. With a simple gesture, the item disappeared into the void that was his inventory.

"Too bad Yeff didn't have the stats to drop anything else," Wulfrin sighed. "Guess it's time to make the most of my time and do some hunting. Surely there are some mobs around here I can fight. First things first, my energy needs a recharge."

Wulfrin wandered through the forest for a bit before stumbling upon a small river. With no better way to spend the time waiting for his energy to come back, Wulfrin pulled out his fishing rod and began to fish.

A late night fishing trip hadn't been on his mind, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Wulfrin cast his line into the river with a gentle flick of the wrist. The bobber rest gently on the river's surface as it occasionally moved. The sounds of the forest were eerie and haunting. The sounds of prowling wolves could be heard in the distance. The perfect target should Wulfrin become ready to strike out. 

"You know," Wulfrin said to the dark forest around him. "This is probably the longest you've sat without so much as a word."

"I've just been thinking," A second version of Wulfrin apparated next to him, his shadow taking physical form. "Levistus took notice of you."

"You say that like you know him."

"Let's just say we have history."

The bobber dipped bellow the surface as his line went taught. Wulfrin retrieved the line and the fish that sat on the end.

Wulfrin mulled over what his Gemini, Konteris was saying. As far as Wulfrin could tell, the Gemini mobs existed solely to act as a mob for a player to kill or spare in order to unlock specific skills. Wulfrin cast his line back into the river and watched as it danced upon the waves once more.

"What kind of history?" Wulfrin asked. "As far as I was aware, Gemini like yourself were only located on Floor 6. Levistus seemed to have come from somewhere beyond."

"You haven't learned anything have you?" Konteris ridiculed. "The Gemini are more than just simple mobs. There are more entities out there like us, though the Gemini are the most common."

"I take it Levistus is one of those?"

"Unfortunately yes. That means we need to keep our eyes peeled and our blades at the ready. Levistus is a powerful archdevil with the ability to traverse the floors like a player. He could attack at any time."

Wulfrin's bobber dipped below the surface once more. He retrieved his catch and the accompanying chest as he heard the snapping of twigs nearby.

Emerging from the tree line were several grey coated wolves. From Wulfrin's headcount, there were some where around eight or so prowling their area. Wulfrin stowed his fishing rod away in favor of his platinum longsword. Four wolves leapt from the bushes towards Wulfrin. Wulfrin took in a deep breath and concentrated for a moment. From the shadows of the leaping wolves, shadowy duplicates of Wulfrin appeared behind them with similar swords drawn. They mirrored Wulfrin's attack as he cut through the wolf closest to him. All four blades met their respective wolf at the exact same moment causing the four wolves to pop into a united scattering of fractal motes. Wulfrin's vision became overpopulated with drop windows.

"Guess it's good training at least," Wulfrin panted as he watched his energy meter get virtually cut in half. "That multiplicity stunt is expensive to do, but it does compliment my Stunning Strike quite well." 

The three duplicates of Wulfrin dissipated and merged back into his own shadow. It was a neat trick he had seen Freyd do over and over again. Now Wulfrin was starting to get the hang of the ability.

As Wulfrin recovered from the attack, four more Wolves emerged to attack him. He focused once more, summoning himself form the shadows of his incoming enemies. Wulfrin and his three shadows raised their similar blades that erupted with the vibrant crimson light of Stunning Strike. With one burst of energy, the Wolves burst into a cascading shower of fractal motes of light. Once more his vision was clouded by the various pup ups from the slain mobs. He wasn't going to complain though. He hadn't been fulfilling his deal with Riardon lately, so the Col and items were a welcome sight.

"That ability sure is draining," Wulfrin sighed as he eyed his waning energy bar. "But I can't deny the results."

"The drain is much worse because of your level," Konteris interjected. "Though I must say, you are picking up on it quick."

Wulfrin waited for a few minutes to ensure that the mobs had been dealt with before turning back to the river.

Wulfrin returned his focus back to the river, materializing the fishing rod again. He decided to make a little fishing set up, materializing a folding chair and tacklebox to rest his feet on. Wulfrin flicked his wrist, sending his line towards the center of the wide river. Wulfrin's energy bar had almost completely depleted again in that fight. The lowering of his level was likely to blame. Wulfrin was a Tech Art specialist. Most of those specific arts, like the Stunning Strike, were collected arts and as a result were the equivalent of his Rank 5 arts even though they had no ranks themselves, making these specific arts just as potent at low levels as the higher ones.

"Back to our discussion," Wulfrin sighed as he watched his bobber. "What kind of history do you share with the archdevil of Stygia."

"For starters," Konteris said crossing his arms as he materialized next to Wulfrin. "He's attacked my kind before."

"Interesting. Did you fight him directly?"

"No. None of us have. It's only been his army. As far as the Gemini know, he is just a myth."

Wulfrin listened to his Gemini spin his tale as he retrieved another small chest from the river.

"So a legend amongst your people?" Wulfrin asked. "Means he must lair on Floor 6."

"Not necessarily," Konteris corrected as he watched Wulfrin cast his line back into the river. "As I stated before he has the capability to roam the floors of Aincrad at will. That's the reason none of the Gemini have been able to find him. Until that Freyd fellow learned to manipulate the shadows, none of us could even consider leaving Floor 6."

"So only by dying at the hands of your player and hitching a ride can you maneuver the floors?"

"That appears to be the case."

"Looks like you and I have our work cut out for us then."

"We do. The problem is I have no tangible form. The burden will fall solely on your shoulders."

The line went taught again as Wulfrin retrieved yet another chest from the river. Either he was getting better at fishing, or this river was bountiful. Either way he decided to note down the coordinates, so he could return and reap the benefits of coming back at his proper tier.

Another set of wolf howls filled the air, just as Wulfrin's energy topped itself off.

"Hold that thought," Wulfrin sighed as he stood from his chair. "Looks like the wolves are back."

"On your six," Konteris agreed as he melded back into the ground becoming Wulfrin's shadow once more. "Nice farming area you've found though.'

"Trust me. It only works because I can obliterate them in one strike. This would be a different story if I were at my proper level. I can't one shot mobs at that level yet."

"Give it time."

Four wolves leapt from the shadows just like the group before. Wulfrin quickly counted the eyes glaring at him through the darkened forest. Another group of eight. His best guess was that he had chosen to fish on their spawn point. A quick unified strike from three shadowy versions of himself along side his own, created yet another rain of confetti like motes of light.

"Time?" Wulfrin scoffed. "I'm a Tech specialist. I'm not built to farm mobs. I'm more focused around inflicting one or multiple targets with a metaphorical Christmas tree of damage effects and crowd control. At best I'm a scout."

"I mean," Konteris interjected. "You can always change that."

"Perhaps after the raid. I don't really feel like learning a whole new move set just before an important event such as the floor raid."

"Understandable."

Wulfrin's shadow divided into three again as another group of wolves emerged from the forest. Each wolf received their own crimson hues sword strike completely obliterating their health bars and transforming them into a shower of confetti. Wulfrin sheathed his blade and returned to his fishing spot, knowing full well it wouldn't be long before the wolves were back again. As he sat down, he began to go through the small hoard he was amassing. It was turning out to be a nice little collection.

Wulfrin dismissed his loot menu with a swipe of his hand. For the most part, Wulfrin's haul form the random swarms of wolves that were spawning around him was a hefty one. He had already collected enough Demonic Shards and Gleaming Scales to complete his current projects that were mulling around in his head. The first was an upgrade to Icingdeath. The reusable stun was nice, but that was the only thing he was really getting from it. The damage from the freeze effect only benefit players that attack after him, and as a player that goes out and one shots most things in his path, it's rarely getting used. The second task was getting a new trinket to help farm shards and scales. The downside, it was going to be a heavy change to his main build. Wulfrin would either need to swap to an entirely cloth armor or no armor set up to make up for the missing bonus his current trinket granted him.

"You should really pay more attention," Konteris spoke out. "You just missed a fish."

"Damn it," Wulfrin cursed.

"What had you so zoned out?" Konteris asked.

"Build plans," Wulfrin responded. "I was thinking to the future. If we are planning to go and hunt down this archdevil, I am going to need to change up my strategy. I've been running around as a extremely simple DPS. I've also been trying to do too many things. I figure the upcoming raid will be a decent gauge of my abilities. Though after, I will probably be shifting myself around. Might try a full scout build. High speed, AoE focus. Perfect for cutting large swaths of mobs down."

"Apt choice. Especially considering we have no clue what Levistus has in terms of an army.'

"My thoughts exactly. At the same time, it will help optimize my collection of shards and scales. Meaning I would be able to more easily kit myself out as the tiers open up."

Wulfrin's fishing line went taught. At least he was paying attention this time. He heaved the catch up to the surface and collected his spoils. No chest this time, but that honestly didn't bother him.

"Should be any minute now," Wulfrin sighed standing up form his little set up.

Wulfrin had been silently keeping count of how much time had passed since the last wave of wolves was dispatched. By his count another should materializing soon. Turns out he was correct. Eight pairs of glowing red eyes flickered to life from the forest around him. Before they could even leap forward, Wulfrin had already taken an offensive stance, Icingdeath poised to strike out. With precision timing, four wolves and three more Wulfrin clones rose to meet them. A series of four united strikes and several flashes of crimson and all that remained in the clearing was a scattering downpour of light particles from the fallen wolves. Wulfrin didn't change his posture. He could still count four pairs of eyes staring at him form the clearing's edge. He waved away the loot panels that clouded his vision. That was the worst part of this whole situation.

"Next wave incoming," Konteris spoke directly into Wulfrin's mind.

"Yep," Wulfrin responded back. "And they will fall just like the rest."

Another prediction that proved to be true. Another coordinated attack form Wulfrin and his three clones and the four wolves popped around him. It was an elegant display of coordination as each version of Wulfrin moved in perfect unison, their weapons alight with a crimson hue. Wulfrin really needed to come up with a distinctive name for his sword arts. He had basically developed his own style of sword play in SAO. The system itself didn't have designated names for the arts, just classifications and an accompanying letter or number. The name itself would just be a vanity piece, but it would also provide a nice little boost to the immersion. One day he hoped to develop his own unique skill and eventually sword art. What those would be he didn't know. Once more he swiped away the loot panel before him and started back to his fishing spot.

"Alright," Wulfrin sighed as he transitioned back to his fishing rod. "Reliable distraction sorted."

"How long you planning to farm?" Konteris asked quizzically. "Surely you have a cut off point."

"Not too much honestly. I'm really close to maxing out my fishing profession, so I figured I'd knock that out as well. Once I've topped it off, I'll head back."

Wulfrin's bobber came to rest on the river's surface. He leaned back in his small folding chair and watched it drift up and down with the few waves that rolled through. Having another breif moment of respite, he went through his collected drops from the last wave of wolves. Another Demonic Shard was in the list. Every thing was coming up Wulfrin at this point. Even if he didn't come up with any additional shards or scales, he wouldn't complain. With any luck he'd only have to farm mobs for shards when he was finished here as fishing had the possibility to hand out scales, though he was pretty sure it was significantly harder to acquire them through fishing.

"So," Wulfrin chimed in breaking the silence. "Where do we think we should start looking for Levistus."

"Just speculations," Konteris responded. "There was a significant amount of ice and snow when he appeared at the waterfall."

"Narrows it down a bit. As far as I'm aware, the only floor predominately snowy is Floor 4.

"What do you know about the floor?"

"Not much actually. Never been there before. That also means there is plenty of random corners to explore."

"Also means ample places to get ambushed."

"Regardless, next round of wolves will be here soon."

Wulfrin pulled back in his rod. Nothing was on the hook, but that wasn't a problem. He stood up and readied his blade. If he was correct, this upcoming wave of wolves would be the last one for the day.  He looked up stream to where he knew the village was.

On cue, four wolves leapt form the shadows. The shadows they cast began to shift to that of a humanoid form. There were now now three additional Wulfrins all targeting their own wolf. It was the same song and dance Wulfrin had performed multiple times today. Crimson light began to fill the darkened clearing. The sound of four distinct blades swinging in perfect unison and finding their mark echoed through the area. Just as quick as they had leapt out to face him, four wolves popped becoming a cascading shower of fractal light effects. Absent mindedly, Wulfrin swiped away the loot totals in favor of keeping his vision clear. At this point though he assumed he could probably make the attack with his eyes closed. Scanning the edge of the clearing confirmed the presence of four additional wolves waiting to strike.

"Last group," Wulfrin said within his mind. "I'll do a bit more fishing and then we can head home."

"Whatever you're ready to go," Konteris confirmed.

"I'll probably do a quick look for a chest as well," Wulfrin said. "Why waste the opportunity?"

"Agreed."

The four wolves leapt from the edge of the clearing. Wulfrin wasn't even trying at this point. With zero apparent effort, Wulfrin and his three shadow clones struck their respective wolves in unison. Each wolf popped creating a cascading shower of fractal light effects. The crimson light faded from his weapon shortly after. With an exasperated sigh, Wulfrin made his way back over to his small fishing spot.

"Let's get this over with," Wulfrin sighed once more as he swapped from blade to fishing rod. "It's getting late and Ciela is probably wondering what happened to me."

"You've done pretty well today," Konteris replied. "You've made great progress. Shouldn't be long before you're facing down the archdevil."

"I still have a lot of prep to do for that. Best to save that for after the raid."

"I can support that decision. Not that I have much of a choice."
