She had seen funerals more cheerful than Angel’s Point. The sky was perpetually choked with heavy gray clouds that seemed to never deliver their rain. The men and women of the town wore plain hemp and austere haircuts. They rarely smiled as she passed by, preferring to keep to themselves.

Not that I can blame them. It has to be a depressing existence, trapped to a single village, depending on the work of angels to subsist.

The angels were a single point of light in the dour palette of floor 13. Bright creatures of sword and wrath, even the shortest stood heads taller than any of the villagers here. They rarely came down from their vigil, and when they did, offered few words. Were the angels NPCs? Or were they considered “mobs”? And if the line between players and NPCs was blurring, did that mean the line between NPCs and mobs did as well?

Some notes on this grinding thread: I am simplifying the math for my own sanity. I will list BD values for the rolls, but frankly, it won't matter. Because I'll be spawning in monsters with no evasion, ACC 5 and AA will always hit. In the dice roller, I will be noting rolls as TECHF/Looting Diseased Villagers [Number]-[Number]. I don't think it matters which roll lines up with which mob because they all have the same loot values, and all will die to one hit. In case it matters, low Roll ID matches low numbers to low numbers. For example, if Roll IDs 100000—100003 are notated as "TECHF Villagers 1-4." Roll ID 100000 matches with TECHF villager 1; Roll ID 100001 with villager 2, and so on.

Acanthus was no longer here for answers. She was a program, carefully tuned according to Cardinal’s parameters. Damage potion. Tasteless protein buff. Loot die, prosperity consumables… done. She had already choked down the requisite food. And NIGHT’s additions to her armory rendered her a perfect cog, designed to crush monsters and spit out money and materials. What kind of materials, it didn’t matter. She had stopped searching for purpose or meaning.

Acanthus was on floor 13 for its resources. More specifically, she had seen a listing in the broker’s database for a sword made entirely of wood, and it had intrigued her. The generic listing name was “Strongoak Blade,” and required a number of materials from Floor 13. She reviewed her list: poison ivy, wasp hive chips, decayed wood, mysterious sludge, and petrified wood.

Finding the nearest collection of monsters, she drew her new sword. No need to test its weight or how it felt. Cardinal would take care of the combat.

The villager’s teeth sank into her as she prepared her strike. The constant buzz as her health bar dropped was comfortable. The buzz lingered for a moment before fading out. Once she saw her opening into the fray, she struck out in a whirling strike. It didn’t need to be planned or pretty—absolute accuracy took care of the details. She had researched the mobs in questions, confirmed their evasion values, compared them to her accuracy. It was literally impossible for her to miss. In moments, she was accomplishing what would have taken her hours to gather as a forager.

Prior to traveling, she sought the advice of seasoned gatherers. They recommended she buy a pair of sturdy gloves for gathering on this floor. *Very* sturdy. And be prepared to throw them away afterwards.

She wasn’t exactly flush with col, so she had to settle for *somewhat* sturdy gloves. The red boarhide didn’t match the rest of her outfit, but according to the other gatherers, the gloves wouldn’t be a permanent addition to her wardrobe. Though she had forgotten to ask why.

One-hundred and thirty-four damage per hit, assuming a major critical, she calculated. She destroyed a villager in a single hit. Subtract zero mitigation. Another villager disintegrated with a casual strike. That’s one-hundred and thirty-four damage per villager. As long as I start my turn with five-hundred and thirty-six health, I can’t be killed. The third villager went down. five-hundred and thirty-six plus one, she corrected herself. Sloppy. The final villager lumbered towards her, unaware of its fate. She disposed of it almost as an afterthought, collecting the items and materials before moving on.

Another good haul. What was the point of foraging in the first place? A useless trade, designed to appeal to those still trapped in the notion that violence was not the option.

Donning a long cloak to protect from the chill, she left the safety of Angel’s point, and began searching for the requisite materials. She was looking forward to the day.

Acanthus had considered using some songs to increase the monster drop rates. She had planned out a few different songs initially. But after looking at the numbers closely, she realized the songs were actually wasting time. She felt sorry for the people that didn’t do their homework and fought creatures using those songs.

Every hit dealt a minimum of four-hundred and sixteen damage, thanks to the Hellstorm buff she had picked up. She knew she could have been trying for criticals to increase that damage, but that just complicated things. The fewer variables she had to work with, the easier this would go. Attack, kill; attack, kill. It was a simple pattern.

Acanthus marveled at the somber beauty of the world around her. If Angel’s point were a funeral, then the outskirts were the time of death. The settlement was somber, in a reflective, peaceful sense. Outside of Angel’s point, the world was brutal and natural. The land was not peaceful. It was merely quiet.

She trudged over broken roads, rampant with cracks filled by ivy and kudzu, and reached down to pull a few strands out. She had heard that the vines made excellent rope, and could even be fashioned into musical strings.

After her gathering attempt, she felt a small chill on her fingers. Looking at the gloves, she was dismayed to see they had already frayed slightly. “That’s what I get for purchasing *somewhat* sturdy gloves,” she muttered. To her disbelief, she watched as the vines slowly creeped back into place on the road, crawling like green worms through the cracks of the road. No wonder this place is overgrown.

Acanthus hacked through the monsters like vines on the road. They vanished quickly before her eyes, dropping piles of col and materials. She didn’t even look at the materials anymore before putting them away. What did it matter? Materials were materials. All that time wasted, looking at the different types of plants, and rocks, and crystals… Edict was right. She was inefficient. No more. Acanthus cut through more monsters like she was harvesting. It was the closest she would ever get to gathering again.

Come on. Keep going. All this time and effort you’ve put in the game and you can’t even power through low-level fodder. Her limbs became heavier with each blow. Weak. She plowed through another mob. You want to be on the frontlines? Then prove it.

She dove into another pack, knowing full well she didn’t have the strength to finish. If I get hit, then I deserve it. She stepped out of one villagers reach before knocking it over, finishing with a flourishing strike to the head. Many of the other villagers had started to slink back into the bushes.

Then, it was quiet. The bushes rustled ominously, but the monsters seemed to leave her well enough alone. Glancing up at her energy bar, she saw that it was entirely depleted. Nothing to do now but wait.

Acanthus flitted from plant to plant, eagerly picking and examining the leaves. Her energy felt boundless.

Leaning up against a tree, Acanthus stood placid. She fought the urge to take a deep breath. It was a physical reaction to a digital affair. Regardless of her breathing, the energy bar would return at a set value. Thanks to her villa, it returned much quicker. All the quicker to return to the grind.

Acanthus glanced over her map, making slow, plodding progress. She had a task for the day, but she also had plenty of time to complete. There were worse floors to be stuck on, so why not take a little time to enjoy herself? She stood still for a moment, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. As still and ominous as the floor was, the air was still clean and fresh. Being outside was good for the soul, even if she wasn’t really outside.

Acanthus tapped her foot impatiently. She had places to be.

A few players approached her, waving politely. She greeted them in return. They appeared to be much higher level than her, although their gear suggested they were still fighting on the lower levels. Acanthus wondered what their story was. Did they know each other in the real world, or did they become friends from the shared trauma of their prison? Acanthus never worked up the courage to ask, and the players disappeared in the distance.

Acanthus continued to lean against the tree, as still as a statue. Her eyes fixed on the energy bar in the top right, waiting for the exact moment it would top off. The waiting would drive her insane. Couldn’t it go any faster? It’s like this game was designed to torture them all.

On some days, the game wasn’t so bad. Something about the green was relaxing to her, even if the plants felt a little monotonous. She hoped for a garden floor on some of the later floors.

The last time she was here, she had spent so long marveling at the plants. How they grew, and they bloomed and had strange lives of their own. It was fascinating from a botanical perspective. Not from a game perspective.

Acanthus reached down again to pull more of the vine. As she worked, she realized why her gloves had frayed. Sturdy or not, the vines had fine hairs that upon closer inspection, were small, supple needles. She felt a mild prick in her finger as a needle pierced the gloves and poked her finger. Drawing back, she decided that perhaps the kudzu was not worth perpetually harvesting. At this rate, her gloves would be in tatters before she even made it to the old growth forest. “I should stick with the list. The poison ivy should just be about three hundred meters south. Near a town called Wanderer’s Rest.”

Acanthus kept a stony face as she chopped through more and more monsters. It was more than she’d ever killed in a day. And it was more than she had ever earned before.

Acanthus, dismayed, saw that the path continued east. To the south, a rolling sea of green choked out any direct path. She had been warned that it was possible to cut through the growth, it was a dangerous endeavor for inexperienced solo players. Resigned, Acanthus continued down the road. Despite the quantity of growth, it was not a vibrant, diverse ecosystem. The plants here all offered the same visuals—rich green leaves, and deep brown branches or light green vines. The colors were pleasant, but so uniform that it was almost maddening.

Acanthus cut through the undergrowth with impunity. She slew villager after villager, each covered in green moss, or vines, or pockmarked with some graying disease. She aimed quick, efficient strikes to minimize her effort—lopping off heads, blowing them away from the middle. Every so often she would have to take a leg or limb off and return to finish the job. Inefficient.

There was probably some interesting, rich background that players could explore. Why the floor became the way it was, the relation of the angels and the humans; that sort of useless lore. None of it would put col in her pocket. Learning about the game didn’t send her home any faster.

Every so often, Acanthus noticed hints of civilization. Plants sometimes took the shape of collapsed houses and structures. The vines often formed alien shapes, indicating that it had swallowed up something foreign, lost to time and decay. Near the road, some tendrils of leafy vines crept slowly along. Acanthus noticed that these vines were full of large, green berries. More of the same green color, but an interesting change from the leaves and branches surrounding her.

The place was nothing more than a sea of green for her to swim from pack to pack. The sword NIGHT had given her worked beautifully. She barely had to work anymore. Killing was as simple as breathing.

With a deep breath, Acanthus continued her slaughter. They’re not real, she said as she slew. They aren’t even people anymore. They’re just people-shaped. If they were alive at one point, it was long before I sent them back to nothing.

Eyes still on the road, she saw more of these berry-laden vines in the middle of the road. She continued along, following the vines as they wound their way down the path.

Acanthus kept her eyes glued firmly to the road. The berries were becoming harder to spot in the thickening vegetation. Finally, she hit the source, something that looked like the base of a small, rootless tree. It stood placidly in the road. Still eyeing the base of the tree, Acanthus picked the lowest berries and began to work her way up. She fixated on the smallest details of the tree, worried that something like the needles from before might prick her. Or maybe the tree was full of small bugs. She kept her focus.

Keeping focus, she killed more mobs. Breathe in, breathe out.

Nothing on this floor could shake her. Nothing on this floor could scare her. She was, mathematically, invincible. 

As she arrived at about her shoulder-height, she noticed a particularly stout branch on the far side of the small tree, just shy of a meter long. She began working from the trunk out to the branch. As she rounded the tree to pick the last few berries off the branch, she had a grotesque realization. 

This branch has fingers.

She killed more of the mossy freaks. Give me col. Give me your materials. She ripped limbs off a fallen villager; the vines made for good crafting supplies.

Horrified, her focus shifted to the tree as a whole. It was not a tree.

The last of the monsters seemed almost scared. It had stopped moving immediately into range, at least. Just a trick her mind was playing on her. They’re just mobs. They’re made to be killed. Everything this game made exists to be killed.

Correction: I exist in this game to kill. Everything else in this game exists to be killed. It is a simple existence either way.

The plants had perfectly captured the last moments of the woman’s terror, down to the ridges of her forehead. Her sunken eyes conveyed an eldritch fear; only enough to comprehend that her death was coming, but not enough to understand why. Her mouth was similarly poised in rictus. Acanthus could see the gaps in her teeth, and a green mass near the back of her mouth, likely her tongue.

Acanthus gently put her hand over her mouth. She resisted the urge to scream.

One villager remained to be killed. Wasting no time, she stunned the creature with a fast strike to the head, and finished with a messy chop to the side. As the creature slowly stopped moving, she reached down and tore blooming plants from its chest. Materials were materials.

No villagers in sight. Disappointed, Acanthus took the time to let her energy recover. She let her mind wander.

Slowly, and without disturbing the grave silence, she stepped backwards from the entombed woman. Finding the courage to tear her gaze away, she walked as quickly as she could on her way. Although she had not seen them before, she could not shake visualizing vague shapes of men and women in the growth. She prayed that she was merely seeing shapes after her last encounter.

Everywhere she looked, she saw the shapes of agonized villagers. She killed, sliced, and ripped away at the monsters that moved in on her. Sometimes she struck out at a growth that ended up being nothing more than a vaguely human shrub. Can’t ever be too careful, she thought to herself.

When the poison ivy appeared alongside the road, she nearly left it untouched. You are being silly, little girl, she chided herself. She knelt down to carefully harvest it, avoiding any contact through her now-marred gloves.

After seeing the plant woman, Acanthus was careful to look over the foliage she plundered. Safety aside, it seemed disrespectful to pillage what amounted to the poor villager’s grave. There would always be other things to gather. Leaving their incidental resting places at peace seemed the least she could do for them.

Acanthus leafed through her current plunder inventory idly. It was impressive. If there weren’t limitations on housing in the game, she could have gone and bought another estate with just what she had right now. And she wasn’t even halfway done. The day was still young, and she had plenty of time left on her Hellstorm consumable. She wouldn’t be hurting for materials for some time.

More villagers began to crawl onto the road. Seeing her energy return to full, she hefted botan onto her shoulder, and walked toward the mess of villagers with an air of trepidation. Time for another harvest.

Pulling away with a fresh set of materials, she proceeded to run her sword through the monster. It weakly moaned as its body vanished. Like culling a garden, she joked grimly.

Because her encounter had thrown her off, she had not realized that the road was facing south. She had made good time to Wanderer’s Rest. She breathed a sigh of relief. I’ve been lucky to avoid any mobs so far. I’m also lucky that the corpse wasn’t a diseased villager. According to her map, it would only be another hour until she arrived.

She read up on the village’s entry in the broker’s codex. Apparently, the village hadn’t existed at the start of the game; only after the floor boss had been conquered did the people of this floor reach out to tame the wilds once more. It was one of many that sprang up after the floor boss was slain.

With a few lazy sword strokes, the remainder of the mobs vanished. More blood to grease Aincrad’s wheels.

She recalled the shades that she had faced on the third floor, and almost laughed thinking about the strange creature’s comments to her. Were monsters allowed to do that? Maybe she just imagined it. It could all be in her head. Technically, it already was. All the beautiful questions of Aincrad, and violence is the only answer she chose. It was the only answer the system allowed. Acanthus had spent two years terrified of death, but the real joke was that death was the only option. For her, or for the things that stood between her escape. People called it the death game because of the obvious fear. But the less obvious result was that players were becoming killers themselves. 

It’s so strange that the game has programmed stories for these NPCs, even after the players have moved on. On some level, it made her uncomfortable. It reminded her how lifelike the NPCs of this world were. Acanthus tried to block out the clear imagery of the corpse’s visage of unfiltered fear. What did she feel in her final moments?

Acanthus hummed lazily, slaughtering another pack of four villagers.

Adrenaline pumped through her body as she took off in a full sprint down the road. The sun was setting; monster spawns would be increasing soon. And she was alone in the wilds. It was a dangerous place to be with Hatred clouding her thoughts.

Wait, what had Hatred told her that day? She couldn’t remember.

I don’t need to remember. I’m not here to learn about myself. I’m here to kill. Aincrad wants it, and I will oblige.

Acanthus focused on her goal. If I get to town, I’ll be that much safer. That’s all I can do right now.

Polishing off another pack of four, she took stock of her surroundings. A dozen dialog boxes trailed behind her as the rewards began to accumulate. She realized she did not know where she was. Somewhere far out in the wilds of floor thirteen. It didn’t matter. Nothing here could kill her.
