Freyd 0 Posted October 15 #1 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Gathering his allies in a seedy tavern on Tomoika's west side, Freyd had secured them a private booth from the owner after promising her that Ren would bring his fledgling crafters union's business here regularly. Meals without spit, and who knew what else, might be a nice reprieve, not that he didn't already dose his dishes with a dap of antidote when sampling new establishments. As much as the white haired smith had done good with his altruism, it had also earned him ire and enemies. Both could be dangerous in a rough-and-tumble mining town like Tomoika. Half the place loved the kid, while the other half might snuff him out in a back alley at the first opportunity. "Decided to focus on the blade only, have you?" Ren might have tossed his shield into his inventory, but something about the man's recent demeanor suggested he'd moved away from his earlier aspirations. Call it a hunch, tempered by a keen appraiser's eye. Filthy Cherry's certainly had its charm, if you looked real deep and didn't overly mind all the horrid you found laying within it. The crew was getting theirs popped today, facing off against one of the most notorious mobs in the game, and at one time the deadliest outside of a raid. Starting out in this dung heap of a tavern was more than a little fitting. *** Note: CS (Shades of the Gemini) and CSA (Beckon the Void) are in use. Rencesvals 0 Posted October 15 #2 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Blushing so many shades of red at the layered folds of innuendo blatantly spread about the place, Ren was glad he'd stuck with his breeches and a simple linen shirt when he decided to answer Freyd's call. The priestly cut of his more normal adventuring attire would have stood out like a sore thumb in such a place, and drawn the wrong kinds of attention. "Err.. yes? How did you... of course you knew. I should stop asking how. Truth be told, there hasn't been much demand for my services as a tank. That, combined with the guild's needs, implied that a change might be warranted." "Keeping the tortoise shell," Freyd replied, referencing the heavy plate armor they now both favoured, negotiating something with the lady bartender while they waited for the others to arrive. "For the time being, it seems we need sharp blades more than tough shields. I can serve in either capacity. Who knows? Maybe this whole 'healer' thing will grow on me. Foyle 0 Posted October 15 #3 Share Posted October 15 (edited) "Reporting in, Sir." Foyle's traditionalist mien was getting the better of him again, right down to the curt military bow, like one might offer a superior officer. Freyd was constantly tempted to push back against it, but worried he would offend his elder's fragile sensibilities. Better to just let him have this, especially if it made it easier to forge the digital worldview he'd desperately need to survive in Aincrad. Properly armed and armored, this time around, Foyle felt far better prepared to face any foe they might encounter. The others could tell he had no idea what they were about to face, or the notoriety attached to this particular mob. Ignorance was truly bliss. They also seemed keen on his newly forged bow, a weapon only recently introduced for use in the game. It had never occurred to Foyle that this was the case, having felt it was the best possible fit for his personal background and chosen role as a hunter. He still needed to thank Sewallus properly for his training. *** Foyle consumes: Gugnir’s Shard (Untradeable/Unique/Reusable Consumable): Crème Brûlée Tray | ACC 2 | Feast (4/6) - takes 1 portion Elixir of Wrath (Potion) | Tierless Perfect | Damage 3 | 195510a Foyle | HP: 260/260 | EN: 44/44 | DMG: 17 | MIT:36 | ACC:6 | REC: 2 | BLD: 24 | PARA Spoiler Name: Foyle True Tier: 2 Level: 13 Paragon Level: 0 HP: 260/260 EN: 44/44 Stats: Damage: 17 Mitigation: 36 Accuracy: 6 Stealth Rating: -1 REC: 2 BLD: 24 PARA Equipped Gear: Weapon/Armor/Trinket: - Humble Origins | T2 Perfect Weapon (Projectile) | PARA 2 | BLD 1 Armor/Trinket: - Ashigaru's Bond | T1 Perfect Light Armor | MIT II, REC I Shield/Armor/Trinket: - basalt. | TIER 1 JEWELRY | ACC III Combat Mastery: - Combat Mastery: Damage R3 Combat Shift: - Familiar Skill: - Custom Skill: - Skills: - Light Armor R2 - Projectile Weaponry R5 Extra Skills: - Assault Mode Inactive Extra Skills: Addons: - Focus - Precision - Stamina Mods: Inactive Mods: Battle Ready Inventory: - laurel earcuffs. | TIER 1 JEWELRY | LD III x1 - Starter Healing Potions (Heals 50 HP) x3 Housing Buffs: Guild Hall Buffs: Scents of the Wild Totem: Wedding Ring: Crafting Profession: Gathering Profession: Edited October 19 by Foyle
Jeeves 0 Posted October 15 #4 Share Posted October 15 (edited) *Cough* Jeeves had actually been present for five minutes, the others having somehow completely neglected to notice him. Even his short stature couldn't possibly explain how often this seemed to happen. Freyd was the only one to reveal any recognition of the pattern through a lingering gaze and mischievous, yet approving, smirk. "What are we doing here again? I hear this place has all manner of useful mineral toxins we could collect to create..." "The Forgotten Time King," Freyd replied, gently curtailing what might have otherwise been a lengthy exposition on local geology. "The BBEG of Aincrad, retired?" Foyle and Ren stared at him like he'd just spoken in Martian. Blinking a pair of oversized eyes exaggerated by his goggles, Jeeves pinched the bridge of his nose, as if that might prevent the aneurism. "Big bag evil guy. He used to be one of the fiercest mobs in the game, but has since been overshadowed by other content. Is it true that Raidou once defeated him in single combat?" *** Jeeves consumes: Gugnir’s Shard (Untradeable/Unique/Reusable Consumable): Crème Brûlée Tray | ACC 2 | Feast (3/6) - takes 1 portion Jeeves | HP: 160/160 | EN: 34/34 | DMG: 7 | MIT:12 | ACC:5 | EVA:3 Spoiler Name: Jeeves True Tier: 1 Level: 8 Paragon Level: 0 HP: 160/160 EN: 34/34 Stats: Damage: 7 Mitigation: 12 Accuracy: 3 Evasion: 3 Equipped Gear: Weapon/Armor/Trinket: - Pestle Pick | DMG 3 Armor/Trinket: - tomochi. | EVA 3 Shield/Armor/Trinket: - Dioscuri | ACC 3 Combat Mastery: - Combat Shift: - Familiar Skill: - Custom Skill: - Skills: - Cloth Armor R3 - Dagger R1 Extra Skills: Inactive Extra Skills: Addons: Mods: Inactive Mods: Battle Ready Inventory: - Music Box | LD 3 x3 - Starter Healing Potions (50 HP) x3 Housing Buffs: Guild Hall Buffs: Scents of the Wild Totem: Wedding Ring: Crafting Profession: Gathering Profession: Edited October 19 by Jeeves
Freyd 0 Posted October 15 Author #5 Share Posted October 15 (edited) "It is." Freyd left out the part where the rest of the guild had come blitzing through the mob's ruins to rescue their leader, who was arguably actually in a bit of perils. The details didn't matter as much as instilling a sense of faith and admiration in his three companions about the organization to which they now all belonged. That also meant faith and admiration for its leadership - and hope enough to carry them forward. "FTK is a hardass, but his stats have lost some of their luster since we've cleared the last few floors. I've defeated him myself in single combat, but that's not the point of today's exercise. Sharkbait taught you what it means to be outmatched, and how the numbers behind this world can outclass you into oblivion. The Monkey King taught you a valuable skill. FTK teaches you that sometimes, when all tricks fail, it's important to surround yourself with good people willing to help you circle kick a BBEG into the ground." Foyle snorted, this time, having just learned the reference. *** Freyd's Action: Spoiler Post Action | AoE-I (x15, 11 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 15 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 12 EN. Rencesvals 0 Posted October 15 #6 Share Posted October 15 (edited) A brief tactical analysis was provided, but Freyd was demonstrably a big believer for learning on the job, walking them straight into the boos room and thumping his loudly on the face. "So, we're apparently not doing subtle today?" Jeeves shrugged and grumbled in response. Foyle just shrugged and took aim. "Right. Fine. Direct approach it is." Rushing forward to take the next pass at the impressive undead monarch still struggling to stand him his broken throne, Ren managed to close the distance fast enough to tear a good clip into the mob's flank, leaving a nasty orange welt on its arm. Hardly crippling, but he hadn't expected to deal any damage at all. Glancing over towards Freyd, elation bubbling over, his captain grinned back before admonishing him for getting distracted in the middle of their fray. "Right. Right! Foyle!" Twisting left, Ren cleared his ally's line of fire and waited for his next opportunity. *** Spoiler Post Action | TECH-A (x16, 12 EN, +3 shift): 15 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 12 EN. Foyle 0 Posted October 15 #7 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Drawing and aiming, as he'd been taught by the elven archery masters of Ellesmora, Foyle hold and controlled his breathing. The rest of the world fell aside as his sword art harnessed power to the tune of his granddaughter's lilting laughter. A twitch of his cheek infected the shot with a charge of carefully suppressed controlled emotion. Ren's cry called and he released. The shaft blew across the chamber in an instant, striking the mark in its left shoulder. He'd been aiming for centre mass, but it was still a miss, and the first time Foyle had felt good about any aspect of this game's combat mechanics. "Looks like I'll owe them all a round of eldred wine for this," he mused, thinking back to the stories he'd overheard the elves tell about their after hours downtime. If they could turn him into a serviceable warrior in such time, then they'd earned both his respect and gratitude. *** Spoiler Post Action | ST-I (x12, 12 EN): 12 EN - (Stamina) = 10 EN. Jeeves 0 Posted October 15 #8 Share Posted October 15 (edited) 'Let them take care of the noble rabble,' Jeeves thought to himself. His stats still weren't quite up to snuff for this type of content. Besides, he was far more interested in the iconograhy depicted on the tattered and threadbare tapestries barely clinging to the walls all around the chamber. Calling forth a sketchbook from his inventory, Jeeves began the lengthy, methodical process of sketching them each in turn. He grimaced when a stray clash of blades sounded too close, causing him to break his pencil tip on account of nerve, shooting all of the combatants the kind of glare the most ancient and unholy of decrepit librarians might shoot at boisterous toddlers, and to the same effect. Groaning, he flicked forth a switch blade and whittled it back to a suitable point, resuming his studies with far greater interest than the lethal combat taking place a mere twenty paces away from him. *** Jeeves takes no action. Freyd 0 Posted October 15 Author #9 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Sensing Ren's frustration at Jeeves' lack of participation, Freyd waved him off. "He's actually doing precisely what I need him to do. This mob's spawn time is too short to effectively complete analysis of the markings present in this room, and screenshots seem to get deleted the instant you leave the area. We're O&I, remember? That makes us special forces, whether you prefer to think of that as special teams, the archaeology branch or spycraft division." Clashing blades with the boss for a moment, because he could resume their conversation, Freyd managed to clip it a second time, but not deal substantial damage. FTK was basically a big, honking bag of hit points to be beaten into the ground the old fashioned way: with brute force. Part of him admired the simple straightforwardness of the fight, though the simplest trick was to zerg-rush him with numbers and watch him crumble. *** Spoiler Freyd regains +4 EN Post Action | AoE-II (x18, 14 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 18 EN - (Rested 1/2; Stamina) = 15 EN. Rencesvals 0 Posted October 15 #10 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Ren frowned at the captain's accounting of their job description. "So, what does that make us? Assassins? I can't say I'd approve of that." "Nothing quite so gross or flagrant," Freyd replied. "Think of us more as jacks of all trades, called in whenever a task needs doing that isn't suited to the vanguard's defensive talents, or the assault team's penchant for decimation. We're the third, more surgical option." Unsure that it was all that much more comforting, Ren acknowledged that there were some aspects of the game that simply could not be ignored - maybe avoided in a true MMO, but such luxuries were long since lost to them. Choosing instead to loose his frustration on the mob, Ren surprised himself when he struck a second decent blow. Not as powerful as Freyd's, but that had never been on the table. "Hey. Foyle 0 Posted October 15 #11 Share Posted October 15 (edited) No sooner had Ren delivered a second impressive strike and an equally enhanced shot rang out as Foyle's shot struck the mob directly in the eye - precisely as he'd intended. A satisfied smirk adorned his face, partially concealed beneath the white of his beard, yet visibly hanging around the creases at the corners of his eyes. Already drawing for another shot, Foyle was finding the necessary rhythm he'd need for sustained combat. Pluck, nock, pull, aim. Friendly fire was too real a possibility, so he'd only loose the moment he was assured no ally might be struck by his missile. "He's about a third of the way down, Jeeves." If the boy had his own mission to complete, it seemed prudent to keep him apprised of how long he had to complete it - at least by the only measured estimate he could provide. Like a bird of prey, Foyle patiently waited for his next opportunity, certain that his capable associates would manage to provide one. *** Spoiler Foyle regains +2 EN Post Action | ST-II (x15, 15 EN): 15 EN - (Rested 1/2; Stamina) = 12 EN. Jeeves 0 Posted October 15 #12 Share Posted October 15 (edited) "Duly noted." Despite his cold manner, Jeeves actually appreciated that consideration that few every bothered to grant him. Summoning a three foot long roll of tracing paper from his inventory, along with a thick chunk of charcoal, he unfurled the parchment over one of the few sections of sculptural script not already worn clear by the same time that somehow forgot the chamber's occupant. "Forgotten by whom, I wonder? Why? How? These are far better puzzles to solve than merely beating a batch of health points in a digital sack into some temporarily inert state. Death? Hardly." Recording the symbols, unsure of their meaning or significance, Jeeves aimed to decipher them and find out. If he was right... they were right, for this had been as much Freyd's idea as his own... it might unlock secrets deeper and more worthwhile than a loot pinata might otherwise give. All he needed here were a few more minutes, and the ability to work without anything trying to kill him. Might have been a bit of a stretch goal. *** Jeeves takes no action. Freyd 0 Posted October 15 Author #13 Share Posted October 15 (edited) A slight miscalculation, or could there be a ghost in this machine after all? Despite every action in the plan played out to perfection, the system played against itself to wield control through its predictability, something had gone inexplicably wrong. The Forgotten Time King, nearly plodding in its pedantic approach to combat, had broken its own cardinal rules. Ignoring the substantial accumulation imposed upon its processes, and the fact that countless iterations of this combat had reported zero deviation from its observance, FTK had just turned and lunged towards the very target it should be mandated to ignore. Freyd even felt a hint of recognition in the void where the undead monarch's eyes should be, focused on the image taking shape on Jeeves' sheet. Fascinating, and terrifying, it was confirmation of something Freyd had long suspected to be possible - even gone to lengths to provoke through instigations against Abdullah, Marv and others, with varying degrees of response. Not success, perchance, yet still notable. Here was an overt manifestation of a mob choosing to act of its own accord. The only problem was that it was trying to kill his friend. *** Spoiler Freyd regains +4 EN Post Action | ST-B (x20, 20 EN): 20 EN - (Stamina) = 18 EN. Rencesvals 0 Posted October 15 #14 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Something was wrong. The mob's behavior had inexplicably and suddenly changed, veering off course and focusing its lethal attention on their smallest, least engaged or threatening party member. "It's gone rogue," Ren cried out, shouting the warning, but knowing he'd never manage to react fast enough to intercept the King in time. Something threw itself at its back, exploding like glass from a shattered invisible window tied to Jeeves' back. Freyd had slipped, no, dashed, though shadow in a burst of speed so sudden he felt a ripple through the very fabric of the instance all around him in its wake. The force of their impact unleashed a cataclysmic burst the rocked the entire room, knocking the rest of them off their feet and sent Jeeves' tumbling until he smashed against a worn stone column in a far corner. "What the hell was..." Eyes bulged. FTK still had two thirds of its health left. It should have been impossible to defeat it. Yet, where the mob once stood there was only Freyd, staggering like a drunkard who'd forgotten which way the ground was supposed to be. Foyle 0 Posted October 15 #15 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Spinning in search of shelter the moment the impact occurred, Foyle's instincts had triggered for self-preservation, but too quickly to grab the boy and protect him. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. Both hands occupied with his weapon, he was somewhat amazed that he'd managed not to let loose a stray shot that might have ended up in a friend's gut. A blast of FTK-based pixel dust exploded, scattering the mob to every corner of the room, save those shards close enough to be scooped by the Samael's Pride's gaping, abyssal maw. He'd come to recognize the shrieking wail of its hunger unleashed. Timely, yet also devastating in its effect, it may have just saved Jeeves' life. Oh shit... "Jeeves. JEEVES!" Casting his bow aside, Foyle ran to the shattered column against which he'd seen the boy collide, having been thrown about like a rag doll. "Did the boss get you? Are you alright? Answer me!" Jeeves 0 Posted October 15 #16 Share Posted October 15 (edited) He'd felt and heard the imminent threat more than seeing it, never even having had a chance to turn his head before cries of warning reached him. Half turned, a woosh of movement exploded right behind him. Something kicked him, or propelled itself from his back with a forceful shove, obtaining enough momentum to intercept the wayward mob barreling towards his position, or so he'd surmised. The world turned sideway, upside-down, the sideways in the other direction, progressing so rapidly through successive changes in perspective that he never had time to piece together how he was tumbling across the ruins until his motion encountered an ill-tempered object that refused him passage. Ouch. Dust, stone, and possibly bits of his shattered spine spewed outward as his face grappled with the ground to slow his slide. Arms and legs spread eagle, Jeeves couldn't help wonder whether he'd just been killed. His only comfort was certainty that he'd protected the rubbing that seemed to have triggered this onrushing brutality in the first place. Edited October 20 by Jeeves
Freyd 0 Posted October 15 Author #17 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Winded disorientation reigned, Freyd struggling to figure out which way down had ended up facing. He knew that Troll's Blood inflicted a toll upon its user, but had normally managed to deflect the drawbacks with cunning gear selection. Granted, he'd not done so for this outing, and this might be the consequence, but something felt off. He was still moving, not paralyzed, just in a wibbly-wobbly sort of way that would prove utterly useless in combat. Combat? COMBAT! Sitting up from where he lay, Freyd found Samael's Pride still gripped in his right hand, its seal humming with the satisfying purr he'd come to associate with the marginal slating of oblivion's thirst whenever the weapon unleashed its most devastating effect. "Uh.... did it work?" Head swiveling about the ruined ruins, Freyd found no sign of their enemy, his addled brain struggling to count up surfacing allies to confirm that their count was correct. He might have been seeing double. Edited October 20 by Freyd
Rencesvals 0 Posted October 15 #18 Share Posted October 15 (edited) "Foyle? Jeeves? Are you both alright?" White-haired confirmation floated in the form of a handwave with thumbs up amidst a still-setting cloud of dust and debris. Freyd, sitting upright with legs splayed before his, looking like he'd just charged a bus, stared at him dumbly. "You alright captain? I think you got him, sir." Reaching down to grasp the tank's arm, Ren hefted him back to his feet and draped one of his arms over his shoulder, helping him along haltingly as Freyd's senses slowly recalibrated. "How did you manage it? The mob was still in the green. I've never seen anything like that!" Freyd just waved the feat away dismissively, like it was not big deal, praising Ren for his own contributions, though his words remained slightly slurred. "We should get out of here and have you all looked at, captain. That was quite the blow, and impeccably timed." Foyle emerged fully from the cloud, recovering his weapon and hauling a haggard-looking Jeeves at his side. The boy's goggles were so caked in debris the he could hardly see, and yet he was grinning like a madman. Edited October 20 by Rencesvals
Foyle 0 Posted October 15 #19 Share Posted October 15 (edited) "We're fine, I think?" Mad cackling laughter made Jeeves sound a tad unhinged, but also implied that he was no worse for wear. "Yeah. He sounds like his usual self, though maybe a tad more on the giddy side than we're all used to seeing." "You good there, goggles?" Freyd's epiphet was intentional, avoiding any mention of 'kid' or other similar nickname he knew got under Jeeves' skin. Foyle had already picked up on the undertone, but wasn't much the type for informal references. "What happened back there, captain? One second the mob was on top of us, and the next you'd obliterated it. How did you achieve such a feat?" Having barely grasped the basics of combat, any details the Whisper might provide were likely to go over his head. The simple fact that Ren seemed awed by the feat, not to mention the limited effect of previous strikes, suggested that it was not a common occurrence. Jeeves 0 Posted October 15 #20 Share Posted October 15 (edited) Holding up his charcoal rubbings like they were some sort of trophy or badge of honour, Jeeves celebrated his survival with a sort of euphoric laughter that shed the truth of the last few moments: he might have just bought the farm. It was a strange sensation - an adrenaline rush combined with satisfaction from a task accomplished. They'd just gleaned a secret the system itself never expected them to seek, let alone secure. All they needed now was a chance to decrypt it. Jeeves relished the challenge in an intensive emotive display that caught all of his other companions off guard. "Come on. This is just the tip of the iceberg. We have the first piece of a much larger puzzle within our grasp and I mean to milk it for as much data as it can give us." He might have made a decent broker after all, Freyd thought to himself, wondering whether Miri's younger brother had ever dabbled in the information economy before his sister was returned to him. It was also a thread worth pulling at, some other time. *** Thread Closing: Simmone receives 2 guild tokens as Treasurer of Firm Anima [4 members in thread] Quest Reward | ID 235987 | LD 14 | Choose 1: Freyd receives: The King's Betrayal [T3 - Perfect Weapon of Choice]: (Paralyze 2 OR DMG 2) | ACC 1 Freyd receives: 3,069 EXP (Word Count [3419/10*18*0.5] + Quest [0]) 30,160 col (1 page [0] + Loot [29,700] + Quest [0] + 15% P5 Reward [460]) 1 mon [Shield Art playtest] 1 guild token [Firm Anima] T4 Rare Armor/Shield 235836 The King's Betrayal | 235987 | T3 Perfect Weapon (Katana) | PARA II | ACC I Jeeves receives: 5,170 EXP (Word Count [3419/10*1*0.5] + Quest [5000]) 10,400 col (1 page [400] + Quest [10000]) Unlock Forgotten King's Authority extra skill 1 mon [Shield Art playtest] 1 guild token [Firm Anima] Rencesvals receives: 5,875 EXP (Word Count [3419/10*2*0.5] + Quest [5000] + 10% slime farm) 10,000 col (1 page [0] + Quest [10000]) Unlock Forgotten King's Authority extra skill 1 mon [Shield Art playtest] 1 guild token [Firm Anima] Foyle receives: 5,341 EXP (Word Count [3419/10*2*0.5] + Quest [5000]) 10,000 col (1 page [0] + Quest [10000]) Unlock Forgotten King's Authority extra skill 1 mon [Shield Art playtest] 1 guild token [Firm Anima] Edited October 20 by Jeeves
