Astra's life before logging into Sword Art Online was one that was filled with some heartache, and a yearning to escape. His early life was filled with frequent hospital trips and stays, as he was born with a heart condition that the doctors believed would potentially take his life. Living most of his childhood in and out of the hospital, he made friends with the other children there, but often lost contact with them as they would be discharged, or, pass away. He spent much of his childhood losing himself in stories and video games, places he could escape to a fantasy world without restrictions, where he could be someone resilient and heroic. Eventually as he got older his heart condition became more manageable, and it appeared like he could live a relatively normal life. At home he lived with his mother, stepfather, and younger sister, as well as his niece. He loved his family even though they struggled to be able to feed everyone, especially with a young child around. Astra would work in his parents coffeeshop to help them out and try to make ends meet for them. He returned to high school, where he was unable to make many friends (though he tried) and spent most of his time daydreaming. He was a good student, but eventually his grades began to slip as he found himself growing more and more disinterested in his current life. Eventually, he purchased a NerveGear and logged into the VRMMO Sword Art Online, where he was hoping he could live out his fantasy life in peace. 

After logging into SAO, and finding out the nature of the death game, Astra had quickly met and befriended another player by the name of Yuji. Both Astra and Yuji were fearful of the prospect of dying, but had made a pact with one another that they'd do their best to help clear Aincrad and join the frontlines. When they set out into the world to attempt grinding, both players were swamped by mobs. Astra and Yuji fought for their lives, but unfortunately Yuji was overran, and Astra was helpless to help his new friend. His heart broke and he was filled with grief as he watched his friend disappear into a bunch of particles, never to be seen again. Narrowly escaping the situation himself, Astra spiraled into a deep depression. He had lost someone he formed a connection with, and he couldn't save them no matter how hard he tried. From there he spent his time in the Town of Beginnings, trying his hardest to combat his anxieties and fears so he could return and keep fighting in the memory of his friend. In his free time he would dress up as a clown and visit the orphanage within the town to try and cheer up the kids who were also trapped within the game. After two years of doing this, Astra finally found his resolve to become a clearer, and pick up his sword and fight. From there, his story begins...

Kind

Astra has a very kind and loving heart, and he lives with his heart on his sleeve. He's always trying to help others as well as see the good in the people around him. His propensity for kindness has gotten him into trouble in the past, but generally it is seen as one of his better traits. 

Courageous

After spending years as a child wrestling with the fear of death, Astra decided that he would try to live his life in SAO by being as brave as possible. He is willing to charge headfirst into situations if someone needs his help, and leave his fear at the door. Even when he's feeling worn down or troubled about his situation, he'll still do his best to utilize the courage he has to reach his goals. 

Strong-Willed

Once Astra has his mind set, he's ready to achieve his goals however he can. His determination to help and protect others, as well as stand up for his ideals, helps drive him through even the most trying times. He doesn't give up easily, even when the going gets tough, and will fight until the end if he needs to.

Fear of Loss

Growing up Astra watched many friends pass on or move away, and this instilled an intense fear of loss in him. Once Astra is attached to someone, or loves them, he doesn't want to lose them in any way. This fear can sometimes keep him from getting too close to others, as then he'll be burdened by his level of care. Whether it be via death, the end of a relationship, or some other means, that fear lingers in Astra's mind. 

Escapism

Astra originally logged into SAO as a form of escapism, looking to escape the mundanity and hardships of the real world. This sense of escapism has still carried over into SAO, especially considering the threat of the death game. Astra has a tendency to escape into the recesses of his brain to try and find a better fantasy that will carry him through the tough times, which can lead to some detachment from reality.

Naive

Due to his kindhearted nature, Astra likes to trust others - however, this can make him too trusting at times. With a penchant for naivety, he can be easily swayed by people who may mean him and his loved ones harm. Will his ideals and loving nature get him into trouble in such a dangerous world?
