[BR-F28] Paving the Way to Floor 29

Recommended Posts

28 Boss Header.jpg

The stench of death hung heavy in the cool air.

Hopefully, it was not an omen of what was to come.

The preparation phase has begun.
Players will have 72 hours to make a post that includes their finalized stat block.
Each Frontliner is allowed the use of 5 crafted consumables for the battle, and any amount of consumables from Quests or Field Bosses.
(Consumables that expressly note they are ineligible for floor bosses and raids remain unusable.)

“Ew” were the first words to escape the knight’s mouth as he approached the designated floor boss rendezvous point. The stench was horrible, the environment icky, the sights unsightly. This place was a travesty, it looked and smelled like the dumpster behind a butcher, absolutely horrid. “Why didn’t anyone say that it was this bad … I knew it was something about a carcass they were fighting … but this.” Macradon thought to himself. He couldn’t fully comprehend the situation he was in, just looking around in the nothingness but an empty forest that smelled like decaying flesh “And why the hell did I come this early” he muttered under his breath while looking for a place to rest and despite his best efforts, the smell was too much for him to relax one bit. “Good I ate everything before coming here … I wouldn’t be able to consume anything with this smell lingering …”. The knight extracted his Banner of Command and planted it firmly into the forest soil marking his presence in the dead and spooky terrain, making sure his presence was known and the standard would be there for some morale. This banner has been in the frontlines in many ways from many people, but no one else had this specific banner, it was Macradon's and he loved having it with him to every raid even though all of its charges were expended "For good ol' times sake ... right, Dom?" he said and leaned up against a nearby tree, looking through the dead tree tops and into the misty skies as he reminisced about his late mentor.

The smell hit Wulfrin like a truck. The putrid stench that filled his virtual nostrils made his skin crawl. If this was the real world, he was certain he would be nothing but a useless set dressing covered in his own bile. Apparently he was one of the first of his team to arrive. Not just that but he beat most of the other frontliners here. He had been spending most of the early morning checking his gear. Then checking it again. And again. Each time he found something else he was missing, something that he couldn't live without. All of which went against the restrictions placed upon the parties by the system. He went through his inventory and scoured each monster drop he had collected over his time climbing the levels to get to this point. At last he had finalized a loadout that provided as many contingencies as he could muster. Was it enough? Wulfrin couldn't tell.

"Come on dude," Wulfrin muttered to himself as he began to pace the rendezvous point. "You've got this. Follow orders. Call out pattern shifts. Use your healing crystals if necessary. Stay in your lane."

To veterans of the frontlines, it was clear the new arrival was very green. He stuck out like a sore thumb.

He arrived at sunrise. His hair was messy, hidden behind his coat hood. He crept in silently, his face solemn. A few others had come before him, but the raid parties were slow to gather. He eyed the participants. None he recognized from his own group. He fiddled with his equipment, contemplating whether he had brought enough with him.

The stench grew around him. Behind the boss room's sealed doors, nothing stirred. The animalistic screams that filled the air last time were absent, leaving him to listen to the voices of other players and his own breath. Corpses lingered about, marking the ground with gore. They had not been touched since he last saw them. Everything was as he remembered, including the dread he felt as he approached.

Sitting on a tree stump, he wiped down his longsword. The taste of Willow's lips lingered, the thought of her drawing him home. He battled with indecision every day leading up to the raid. Was it more selfish to stay behind, knowing others were risking their lives, or to join them, knowing there was a chance he might leave behind the only person who mattered to him? She supported him every step of the way, though he knew she was sad and worried regardless.

It was not his own life he feared for. He assumed that was consistent with many of the dwindling frontliners. If the thought of dying scared them, they could shield themselves with a town; hide away forever and never risk a thing. But they would not, and neither would he.

In no mood to mingle, he kept away from the others. When his group arrived, he would join them. Until then, he waited.

It pained him to be making this much noise wandering through the same misbegotten woods that had dragged him through his original creepy sojourn from Glyndebourne, to Magistrate Aldenbrook's sordid manse, eventually landing in the fight against Owij'be and its prickly head prongs.  So far, this floor was not endearing itself.  Gone were his days of slinking around in spoopy pajamas, trailing foes from the shadows, killing them.  Now he had to do it the old fashioned, noble way: by staring them in the face first.  He could feel his eyes' eyes rolling in their metaphorical heads, but said nothing.  Only a few had yet arrived, and enough nerves would be frayed without an added dose of grumpy Freyd.  Donning this getup and embracing the role it represented had been a conscious and deliberate choice.

'Time to step up,' he'd told himself, thinking back to exemplars he'd witnessed upon arrival at his first raid.  They all looked so cool, collected, confident.  He'd been a nervous wreck.  Speaking of which, he found his doppel, looking very much as he had back them, fingers fidgeting so hard they could cause blisters.

"Mac! Wulfrin.  Only you two would be crazy enough to hang about in a place like this on your own.  If you wanted better danger, Sally's Bar in Glyndebourne - the Naughty Pigeon - seems to offer plenty."  A calming pat on the should as Freyd moved past and found himself a suitable space to settle and sort out his affairs.  It would take a hot minute, or several.  Today's affair had been in the works for ages, and best laid plans were yet to be finalized.  "Time to pull out the final Lego blocks, my friends."

A familiar form hovered nearby, on the penumbra of their sight.  It was a place he knew well, and a choice.  Choosing to respect Morningstar's solitude, he had his own team to look after, and that felt weird enough as it was.

"Here, Mac.  I brought you some goodies.  Should help you out a bit after that trouble we had on our recent hunts.  Chow down boys, and plug your noses if you have to.  The boss will only be worse without these buffs."

It took a while, but finally Macradon wasn’t alone out here in this stinking hell hole. He waved at the figure that he found somewhat familiar, it was someone from the raid meeting, he wasn’t too sure who they were, but just knew that they were in the team together. “Hi! Good to see you, seems like Team 2 are the first to begin to assemble out here.” he said to @Wulfrin with a chortle to his tone, it was weird that it took this long, the frontliners were usually there at the same time like a huge wave, but this time … it was different. Maybe it was the smell, who knew. The knight accepted the offering and looked at it for a few seconds before trying to gulp it down “Hakuna matata …” he muttered before downing it in one fell swoop. The miso soup was healthy for him, or that was the excuse he used to fight against the horrid smell of the area. “Phew! That did the job!” he exclaimed and tried to keep it in as he fought against the putrid odour “If only this was the hardest of the raid” he tried to say jokingly, but it just sounded like he was holding off dry heaving at any moment.

After the extreme raid against his virtual stomach and his senses, more people arrived. He looked over at Freyd who had brought feasts to share and he thought to himself “Oh shit, that soup was just a labyrinth boss … here’s the floor boss.” he said and fought through to indulge on all of the food necessary for him to do his job as efficiently as possible. “Thank you, @Freyd. It’s a huge help with all of this.” he said and accepted the offering, shifting out some of his equipment as well as applying all the buffs he could get. Back in the day, it was all about hitting it until it died and switching out when it did the same to you, now boss raids were a whole ordeal, it was exhilarating "as it should be." he snickered for himself and prepared for the worst.

"I'm crazy for just showing up," Wulfrin sighed in response to The Whisper's comment. "To say I'm stressed is an under statement. I've been going through every monster drop I've collected in my short time climbing the levels in Aincrad and I still have no clue if it would be enough. I almost feel like I've overprepared at this point."

Wulfrin's attention turned to the only other player to arrive. Morningstar seemed particularly dower today. Wulfrin knew exactly what was eating away at him though. It was likely the thought of leaving behind that other player Wulfrin had only met briefly at the beach. Wulfrin had done the same thing when he left his own home on 28. His wife had sleepily made her way down the stairs just as he was about to finish his preparations and Wulfrin shared with her what he hoped wouldn't be their last kiss. Wulfrin gave a silent nod to the sky and Solaris, his familiar, fluttered over to The Lightbringer and gently nudged him to grab his attention. When Wulfrin's eyes would meet Morningstar's no words were exchanged, just a silent nod and a thumbs up from Wulfrin. They may not be fighting in the same party, but that didn't mean Wulfrin couldn't shoot a bit of reassurance his way.

"Anyway," Wulfrin sighed as he turned his attention back to his party. "I do have a suggestion though. I'm essentially a swiss army knife of effects at this point. I'll be trying to hit the boss first in an attempt to activate Freeze form my sword. Should hopefully help put out a few extra points of damage. I'll probably also lead off with Shatters the first handful of attacks. Not knowing much about the thing is definitely making it hard to plan for though."

incredibly prepared. more so than she really did remember herself ever having been. how'd she end up in the tanking role beside yuki, anyway? didn't she jot herself down as a damage-dealer?

-- no matter.

iris found her a pair of new shoes for the fight. it fit her well after a few modifications, and that was enough. anything else she needed was already available for her own use. it wasn't as though she hadn't taken a rough hit before, and neither was she afraid to do so if she was doing it right by her shield.

any damage yuki could take, night figured, she could match it in turn through the power of friendship (joke) and sheer will.

night had arrived underdressed for the occasion. tracksuit tied at her waist, she fumbled with the vanity mask that she'd brought from home when she realized it wasn't working so well. neither did her senses at the scent of rot. while there was still time for everyone else to show up, she donned what layers she could against the elements, before laying out the spread on a folding table she was advised to bring.

Decay and ruin would be what was left behind.  Those that have come before were already here.  The fetid remains still lay where they were.  The forest itself was dying around them.  The green of the hunter's hair would be the only thing that would bring any semblance of a healthy nature.  A sad place to be, but they were not going to be there for much longer.  They were there for a purpose and that purpose was to kill the thing that roared and rumbled beyond them.

"Yep, this is where we were, alright.  Wreaking of death."

Several people were already here, which was no surprise.  Everyone was fighting for the lives of themselves and others down below.  They all had an obligation, even if it was selfish.  Though, it was interesting to see whom was here.  Of course there was Freyd and NIGHT, the two he would figure would be here first.  Morningstar and Wulfrin, which was just as surprising, but as the new front liner was with his trainer, the hunter was sure he would be fine.  Then there was his old.. Then there was Macradon.

"Already got things set up for others huh, Freyd?"

He would head over to the small group forming.  Nodding to the lot as he came over to NIGHT.

"As do you too, NIGHT.  Ready to take on the fury?"

He would ask as he gave her one of the hellstorms that he had acquired a day before.  There was still more to hunt, but the time was not to their schedule.  In the mean time, he take it upon himself to feast upon what NIGHT had gathered for the lot of them today.  A littlbe bit of Saba dipped in miso, and slapped with acai.  A sweet ice cream to finish it off before they would be done.

Contrary to the information Freyd had shared, the sounds of a raging beast lingering in the darkness was absent. Perhaps their foe knew of the imminent attack, and it now waited quietly out of their sight. Ready to strike at any moment. Anxiety inducing silence, only broken by the sounds of boot falls, sloshing through muddy puddles. Each breath he took slowly became muffled by the heightened thrumming of his heart.

Everything else mentioned, however, was only inaccurate in the fact that even words couldn't describe the death left in the creature's wake.. and the smell. The anxious pit that sank into his stomach suddenly rose up towards his throat, the stench nearly making him loose the little food he had eaten. "Eugh..that's gonna make this difficult." Even bunching the collar of his cloak against his mouth and nose didn't do much to mask it. As long as he kept his stomach steady, and didn't puke all over the battlefield, he should make it through alright.

Aside from the actual dangers the boss presented, at least.

Thankfully, the food items he had picked up from a shop a week or so earlier didn't have much of a taste. On any other day, biting into a smore and tasting basically nothing would be upsetting. At least the sweet flavor wouldn't be spoiled by the taste of the air that inevitably clung to his tastebuds. Weird that the antidote he drank to wash all the 'sweet' treats down had more of a flavor.. even if it wasn't exactly pleasant.

Before him, he could see a handful of players already gathered. Last minute preparations took place, as his comrades poured salves over their weapons, and put food in their bellies. Stopping just out of sight of most of those in attendance, the ginger would softly raise a finger to open his menu. The sign up sheet was mostly full, but their team held a barren spot. For a new tank and support leading the charge, that wasn't necessarily ideal for the two of them to feel comfortable in their latest roles. It was a long shot, for sure, but opening his messages, he contacted a friend he hoped he could count on.

  Reveal hidden contents

Sending off his message, he would finally exhale and release the breath he did not realize he had been holding. The green clad duelist defender stepped out into the open, taking one last look over his equipment and stats to make sure he was ready. "Yo." he would say with a forced smile and nervous wave of his hand, "I've got an extra Crystal of Divine Light for anyone who could use it. Don't think it'll do me much use today." [For Cordelia, not actually up for grabs]

"Though, if anyone has anything that can help out with my mitigation a bit more, it would be most appreciated."

Zandra was counting on her finger as she was heading towards where all the frontliners would gather up.’’Hmm, how many floor bosses have I been in by now.’’ she mumbled to herself. ‘’So at first it was the God of the swamp. Hmm, next one was that Avarious.’’ she had folded down her left thumb and index finger. Then she went thru bosses until there was no fingers left. ‘’Oh, have it already reached more then ten.’’ she let out a deep sigh and looked at the sky. ‘’Been pushing forward for so long. Will we ever get out of here? I just wis…’’ suddenly she both mumbling and walking as a smell hit her. ‘’Eew, guess the big boy havent his shower today.''

She continued her walk towards the group of players that started to gather. Her fingers automatically darted across her floating screen as she put on her equipment, prepared her inventory and used some pots and crystals to be ready for combat. She hesitated for a second before she took the fillet as well.

Of the players already here, about half of them was part of same team as Zandra. She walked up to them with a relaxed smirk on her face. ‘’Heya, nice to meet you all again.’’ she said with a nod to the others before she focused on friends she was gonna battle with today. ‘’Seeing most of best team is here already.’’ she said with a wink before she nodded to the feast. ‘’And no offence but I hope this smell does not comes from that food right?''

It is better this way

He's upside down a dead tree, not really a good picture to paint but thought of how absurd it was to be the Hanged Man and tried to be one. Everyone seems to be familiar faces, people he has joined on battles he has lost count- he wasn't really counting. Raven-black hair, unkempt, a dull colored attire paired with an ominous looking katana, black amorphous substance leaking yet slithering around his waist and left arm.

Crozeph drops in on a floor boss battle

He remained upside down, looking at the players present, Mac had the most relatable reaction and with him is Freyd and a new person to him "they call him Wulf Trim? ah! who am I to judge" he muttered. Night and Hirru was there, he's thinking whether these two would actually tell Yuki and Baldur that he's here "that isn't considered snitching I guess, bet it would make my wife appear. Shameful it will be to get beaten to a pulp by the wife before the boss could even..." he crossed his arms as thoughts go deeper.

The only problem remaining, is he appeared empty-handed might as well call Lazarus a rich man.

"Already got things set up for others huh, Freyd?"

Grinning as the Jade Hunter passed, offloading his comment in passage, Freyd offered his friend a wry grin.

"I'll know you'll take care of your team, Vice-Commander.  You always do.  Just remember to watch out for yourself while you're at it." A quick two-fingered salute was about as formal as he ever offered, yet was also well-earned.  Hirru was more a veteran than most here would realize, though quite a few familiar faces were making appearances.  Not all had attended the pre-raid meeting, as was expected.  He could only hope that the local woodwork wasn't so rotten that it would still cough up enough players to fill their ranks.

Turning to greet Zandra and the oddly dangling Crozeph, he welcomed both to the raid, offering for them to partake of the prepared feasts.

"Sorry, Z.  We tried hanging a couple hundred of those little pine-scented air fresheners, but they melted on contact with the odour."  She was another who'd seen many more raids than he, as had Mac, making him realize how much the noob he still was when it came to these things.

"Just leave some for the rest of us, Crozeph," his head tilting to gauge whether it would help him understand what the other fellow was doing.  "I think we're still expecting at least one more."

Listening to Wulfrin strategize, you could practically scrape the over-analysis off him like a sludge.  They were too much alike for Freyd not to sympathize.  He'd been a similar wreck while preparing to face Shadow, that first time.

"Sounds like a good plan, Wulfrin.  Why don't you take these.  You'll be better suited to them than I will for this fight, and now's not the time to be stingy.  Don't worry.  We've got this, and you're already way more prepared than I was for my first raid.  Just be mindful about the Troll's Blood.  It's smelling a bit funky and might be going bad.  Could also just be the local stench."

Finally people began showing up, different teams were slowly gathering, it was time! Macradon would put on his game face and do a few stretches while adjusting his armour for the best combat fit. The mist from his armour cooled the air slightly, but the minute temperature difference made no actual difference to the horrid air permeating around them. He would do a few small hops and shake everything into place and get himself pumped for the fight. He would take off his sword in its scabbard and place it in front of him pointed down with both hands ready for battle, ready for war. The knight inhaled deeply into his digital lungs and slowly exhaled, trying to steel his mind away from this horrid stench. A few breaths would do the trick and his Survival skill helped a lot. With his armour in check, his mind in check, his body in check, Macradon prepared the last of his setups for combat, his Parry. Already now, Macradon would grab the grip of his sword and hold it by his side, ready to draw and parry at any time. His body was locked in, his mind focused on survival, for a boss raid would commence very soon.

"hirru."

he'd placed a hellstorm in her hand. she wasn't exactly sure why its vote of confidence had been towards her, never mind that no other damage dealers of the party had shown up yet. she gave him a nod, before applying it. "as ready as i'll ever be," night noted. her eyes were busy with its application as the support was partaking in the buffet.

and maybe something other than death was in the air, because night had decided to stir in her speech. "you know, hirru," she'd said all of a sudden, "i can't tell if it's just me, but past the twenty-fifth, it might've just seemed routine to show up at one of these fights without worrying any more." and she let that implication sit in with them for a while. "not that the fight ahead of us isn't deadly," night added, voice getting caught partway through, "but the act of getting prepared... loses its edge, if you catch my drift. that there's only really so much you can do before you go up against the keeper itself."

she'd swapped her weapons in the interim. looked about the clearing to determine the best place to head into hiding. when hirru was done, she gestured to the rest of the attendees. "up for a walk? i hope you don't mind if i suddenly vanish partway through, though. i'll still be here." night brought a finger to her lips. "just quiet."

even if hirru decided to busy himself apart from her company, night would stroll along as she intended, sights drifting between the players. jomei said something about needing a duality -- best she could do is fork one over with a summon of that crystal. "here," she offered. "careful how you use it. you're tanking this time, too, aren't you?"

-> updating statblock. (+ hellstorm, + jack's executioner to bri, <-> weapon swap.)

Baldur had not been far afield when he received Jomei's text message. He had seen Hirru preparing for the floor boss fight and he had seen Mac fluttering between floors again. The fight would be well in hand as had previous floors. Best to let the old grudges die and let those more up to the task carry the fight forward, but some part of Baldur could not be too far off, just in case. They were still his friends after all.

Reading through the text message, Baldur started to head towards the clearing where the others waited, his blue and white haori just barely staying above the muck. When he got there, he started to do a count. It looked like they would probably be fine? So he hung back at the edge, away from the others as he watched to see other stragglers begin to arrive. If he was needed, he could be there. Otherwise, he would retreat back to his home and burn another pray for the group.

From his position, staying away from the path that new arrivals would take to get there, he was not hidden, but he was out of anyone's eyeline. He wasn't here to cause a stir or pull anyone's attention. He didn't want to distract from the fight that was about to start, but he typed up two quick messages.

He once again held a small pouch of smelling salts. Dried flowers from the gardens at his estates so that he didn't gag on the repulsive smell. It may be the most challenging part of this fight, simply not wretching. He felt bad for whichever dev had to program in bad smells into the system.

No teleport crystal. She’d agonized about the decision over a sleepless night, counting fake stars in a fake sky. But the stars dimmed as the sun rose, Acanthus had no more time to worry. She left her fears in the studio with Oz’s handcrafted crystal, weighing down a sheaf of half-completed compositions. If she took it to the fight, the teleport crystal would be a false sense of security. The fight would become chaotic, the plan would begin to fall apart, and Acanthus would have to think of a backup plan. And a plan that involved running would only distract her.

The world seemed to move slower at the doors to the boss room. The raid group slowly began to coalesce into their respective groups. People she knew, people she didn’t. Some players seemed more at ease than others, but everyone was preparing for the fight with a somber, quiet air. Consumables Acanthus had never even seen were being exchanged. Weapons that could pass for ancient powerful artifacts were being casually handed off from player to player. Her own gear was certainly not an island. It was a reflection of all the people that had brought her here. A charm from Nymoria. Armor found by Riardon and perfected by Ren. And the sword, a gift from NIGHT. For all her own efforts to quash her gentleness, she was ashamed to admit that it was only the kindness of others that had carried her this far.

Although it had little effect, Acanthus wore the tattered remains of NIGHT’s gift to her. Her encounter with the Gemini left it no more than a frayed splash of blue, but Acanthus swore it warded off the stench of death. Maybe it didn’t—but she clung to it all the same.

the third and final stop: floor 28.

far too many things have died here.

she passes wide open gates, quiet, almost-reminiscent of bygone days, when the places further beyond had been as unreachable as oblivion itself. she's here, lars. but you're too dead to care. she thinks of a weight on her shoulder, a piano, and endless hours spent in a worthless imitation of a church, and she presses forward into the darkness.

"thank you kindly." a faint liquor scent clings to the woman, compliments of a single drink from the sour rumor. of course her shopping spree was for the boss battle, why would she bother herself during her days of rest and relaxation when she could simply finish all the busywork on the day of? smiling, and with not a hint of exhaustion from her trip all around the floors, arabelle takes her consumables from wulfrin. "you're a fellow newcomer, aren't you? good luck and stay safe."

very few people are in a talking mood. she leaves wulfrin to his preparations. the [matriarch's stinger] and the [hellstorm] -- both effects are splashed onto her weapon, adding small icons beneath its enhancements. deftly, she returns amaterasu to its minimized form, and she starts to look around. team four, at least according to the lineups they had decided during the meeting, happened to consist of names she was completely unfamiliar with... plus a blank space. hardly a concern. moving through the gathering of players, arabelle crosses out groups with names she recognizes until she reaches one.

she approaches a handsome lone swordsman cloaked in green. "hello! team four, i'm assuming? my name's arabelle, and i'll be your aoe dps." coming to a stop beside her teammate, she tucks her hands behind her back and tilts her head up to continue addressing him. "all of my prep is done. i suppose there's nothing left to do but wait, then. did anyone ever sign up for the last slot?"

The place smelled like death. Oscar stepped into the fetid arena with a look of sheer disdain upon his face. It was one thing to hold ten thousand people hostage with ticking time bombs on their heads. It was quite another to assault their senses with the smell of decay.

“Insult to injury, Kayaba,” Oscar murmured as he joined the ever-growing throng of people. Despite the gut-churning stench of the arena, Oscar kept a deadpan expression. Unusually so, in fact. The type of blank expression one might keep when they’re specifically trying not to expel the contents of their stomach. A brave face with a stiff upper lip that fooled no one.

Perhaps it was his profession that made him so sensitive to it. A sharp palette involved a sharp nose, after all. It was about all he could do to blink the tears from his eyes and find his group. Oscar had brought his own potpourri. He just needed to find his team to use it. With watering eyes and such a large gathering of people, it was easier said than done.

But mama didn’t raise no bitch.

And Oscar wasn’t about to make a spectacle of himself by losing his lunch before the fight had even begun.

His group was found and without a word, he set the feasts about the immediate area. An eclectic assortment. Items that were not, at first glance, food. But the aroma they gave off clashed against the foul air. The smell of aromatic herbs and grilled meat mingled with the rot. At first, it made things all the more unsettling. But the scent of the food overpowered the heady air and created a bubble where the only smell was that of Oscar’s prepared smorgasbord. The relief was immediate. Oscar let out a heavy sigh followed by a sharp intake of air. It did much to renew his humors, though he would need a bit more time to get the taste out of his mouth.

“Sorry I’m late, lost track of time. Buff up dudes.”

A wraith shambled into the room, at home with its surroundings.

The hood that fell over his eyes cast a shadow over most of his face, beyond the pale jawline and thin line that formed his lips. He blew through the stench of death like a black wind, carrying it with him like an old, haggard friend. Perhaps it was- twice now he had faced the strongest creatures of Aincrad, once to sleep for what seemed like an eternity. He did not fear it the way he once did; yet in not fearing it, the Phoenix had learned the importance of staving it off. Like a creature denied oblivion, he crawled the surface of the flying castle's floors, a wretched blemish on the system, a pock mark denoting failure.

For so long, Alkor sought to burn through the candle of his life for the sake of others, melting away enemies, burning, mowing them down- but the flames of rebirth slowly burned at him as well. Charred black, he had learned the emotions of others, heard their pleas, harkened to their cries. The bonds he forged were meaningful, if not to him, then to those around him. Where once he had been selfish as a child, seeking to cast aside relationships, taking zero accountability for who or what he hurt on the path, the Dark Knight had grown. His eyes no longer held the glimmer or light of youth. As he joined those who had gathered for battle, he pulled away the cowl that obscured his eyes, revealing the fatigued, black bags that lay beneath amber.

The feelings that hung in this place were like low lying fog, stagnant and thick.

Reticence. Fear. Uncertainty.

Resolve. Bravery. Devotion.

He took in the myriad flow of feelings, carving their meaningfulness into his very soul. Those who lived, and those who died- he would remember them. He would take their pain, their suffering, their anxiety- and he would turn them into fuel for the furnace. Alkor would burn so that others need not. Such was the meaning of this unlife, the second chance afforded to a wanderer who came empty and had been filled to overflowing.

"..."

There were many words spoken, some of them heavier, some light, but Alkor listened without speaking. This was their time, some of them for the very first time. It need not be sullied with something he would have to force. Luck, well-wishes- these were things that he no longer believed much in. To offer those tidings would have been false, frail, and unfair to those who deserved better. No- he would offer all that he had for their sake.

I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me.

He reached into his inventory, drank deep of one of the draughts he held there, and exhaled quietly. With a motion, he applied the effects of his Gold Star Stickers.

Alkor partook of the feasts brought forth by Oscar, emboldening himself for the ordeal ahead.

I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.
