Ariel’s gaze flicked between the spectral forms drifting through the bog and the thrashing Callisto, feeling the weight of the stories etched in their grim surroundings. Each step in the swamp released memories from the ground like breaths of death itself, the cries of creatures and the silent suffering of an ancient wood now all woven into Callisto’s very being. Ariel felt a pang of understanding—this revenant bear was born from vengeance, not merely malice. And though she had no role in this place’s ruin, she would fight, resolute, for the sake of her party.

A faint smirk tugged at her lips as Night called to Yuki, urging their coordination. Ariel’s blade had cut deep earlier, but Callisto’s raw, ceaseless fury showed no signs of abating. Gripping her katana with both hands, she took a steadying breath, then charged, slipping past the frontliners to close the gap in a low, measured stance. She timed her movements, waiting until Night’s strike landed before she surged forward.

Her grip on the hilt tightened, her intent channelling directly into the blade. As if sensing her desire, black flames began to lick along Nihilim’s Wrath, consuming its edge in flickering shadow. The cursed weapon pulsed with dark energy, each flame whispering Nihilim’s endless vengeance as they coiled and expanded, flowing like a second skin over the blade.

With a single, fluid movement, Ariel surged forward, directing all her focus into her strike. The flames left a dark afterimage as her blade cut through the decayed air, bearing down on Callisto’s massive form. There was no defense to resist it; the flames seemed to pass through flesh, bone, and spirit alike, fueled by the wielder's will.

As she drew back, a smoldering scar was left in her katana’s wake, dark ichor spilling from the deep wound. Ariel’s silver gaze was steady, each breath measured as she prepared to continue.

The monstrous Callisto stands in the center of the battlefield, its immense frame trembling with the building tension of a storm waiting to break. Its fur, thick and matted with the dirt of the wild, ripples with every breath it takes, the deep, ragged inhalations almost vibrating the air. The animal is still—too still. Its eyes, glazed over and unfathomable, narrow in a dangerous sliver, fixated on the source of its growing anger. Watching the deep wounds it had inflicted on its prey heal over, its animalistic confusion at the spectacle merely adding more fuel to the fire.

At first, it is the subtle tremor of its muscles, the slight tightening of its massive limbs, that betrays the bear’s mounting fury. It clenches its powerful jaws, teeth grinding audibly, the air between them sharp and electric. Its shoulders roll with the tension of a coiled spring, every fiber of its being teetering on the edge of explosion.

The low, guttural growl begins deep within its chest—an ominous rumble that seems to shake the very earth beneath its paws. The sound is low at first, as if the bear is weighing the decision, holding itself back with an ancient, instinctual restraint. But that restraint is fraying, unraveling with every heartbeat, every breath. The growl intensifies, growing in volume and ferocity, rising like a wave, its pitch vibrating through the trees, warning all that danger is coming.

The bear’s massive head swings from side to side, nostrils flaring, eyes flashing with primal rage. It is no longer merely a predator. It is the embodiment of wild, uncontained fury. Its claws, thick and razor-sharp, scrape across the ground, leaving deep gouges in the dirt as the animal shifts its weight, preparing to unleash the force building inside it. The fur along its spine stands on end like the bristles of a spear.

As its rage consumes it, the bear lumbers forward with terrifying intent, its heavy steps reverberating through the forest. With each motion, the air grows thicker, charged with an undeniable presence—the raw, unyielding force of an apex predator driven to a frenzy. Its lips curl back, revealing rows of cruel teeth as it lets out a final, earth-shaking roar—a sound so full of wrath that it seems to shake the trees themselves.

The beast is no longer controlled; it is a living, breathing torrent of rage, an unstoppable force ready to crush anything in its path.

she'd been half expecting a sweep, a lunge, a swipe. anything, beyond the bear's teeth and pick-up attempt. didn't the same thing happen to one of the other parties? scooped up and whisked away seemed like the worst option, because her newfound proximity with the ursine seemed to emphasize how much it reeked of death. how prevalent it was in the cool breath huffed her way as she was taken for a ride. in night's passing view of the arena, she but saw yuki bluster with surprise, but nonetheless proving her worth with a strong blow.

ah. of course this had to happen while she had pulled aggro in the brief moment she could draw away its attention from her friend. there was a small struggle, the woman trying to find her way to claw out of the bear's hold. but nothing was found, and all night could do was wave to the crowd in hopes that she could get out alright.

Expecting the roar once more, the hunter held his shield up to keep his himself safe, as if the shield could do anything against sound and madness.  Although there was no real reason to believe that it would, he could only hope that it would.  Though, there was a bigger problem that was now beginning to rear it's ugly head.  Quite literally.  The sound of quakes and bounding would come closer to the group before the visage of the rotten head became visible from behind the hunter's shield.  He was close by to Mina from the last few moments before, so he was fairly away from the others.  Though, the size of a large bear coming at one of his party members.

"NIGHT!"

He would shout as the bear's maw would clamp down upon NIGHT before being thrashed around the area.  He couldn't tell, but as it happened he was already running after them.  He needed to get close to keep her safe, but he couldn't do much at this distance.  He could use a barrier, but the effect was only good for those immediately around him.  If only he could..areyourequestingfatesdesign

The ring upon Hirru's outstretched hand shimmered for a moment before a tall spectral shield started to encircle the hunter.  Fate's Armament had come to answer his call, once more.  The blue transparent shield would begin to glow, as if a sword art would play out from it.  A large shield would emit from each player in the party for a small moment, but the effect would be instant for NIGHT.  As the shield would force open the jaws of the bear, keeping it from slamming down upon her.  While this was going on, the ring seemed to be growing hot.

Yuki was focused. The group had already had to dealt with her mistakes so she refused to commit another. Things were going relatively well thankfully, despite the jump-scare of Mina’s health dropping drastically low. Yuki would shift her approach from protect the president to offense once again before watching her best friend get yanked away from her unceremoniously.

NIGHT! Hold on!” She would call out as she reared back her spear and leaped forward attempting to hit the bear as hard as possible in an effort to force its grip loose of her off tank. The spear glared pink as it sank into the meaty flesh of its game. Even with the stun and the attack, however, NIGHT had still been locked down. “We’ll get you out of there, hold on!” She encouraged as she shifted back to defensive posture.

Violet winced as the boss seemed to lock in on NIGHT, its claws pinning the woman to the ground. She could already see Hirru take a defensive action, alongside passing on some increased energy regeneration. "Thank you, I'll try not to waste it!" she said calmly, hurling Ember forward towards the boss. They were already cutting through almost half of its health, only a token amount left in the third bar, and the fourth was looking on-time for ticking down just as fast as the first set.  A few moments later, her armor seemed to shimmer as a rush of energy hit her. "Ugh, seriously?! you proc AFTER he gives me a boost- Stupid armor!" Violet caught Ember, before opening her menu to send Yuki another crystal.

"I almost forgot to keep sending these, Keep it up Yuki!" It wasn't like Violet was going to be using them unless they needed some backup healing, and even then NIGHT, Hirru, and Yuki likely had them covered for the entire raid. It was pretty cohesive - not on the same level as Freyd's team, but still impressive. Even with The small error Yuki had made in not taking a skill that allowed her to take extra aggro from the boss, they were keeping it together.

The navel-gazing philosophy evaporated from Acanthus’ mind as soon as she saw NIGHT getting whisked away in the monster’s jaws. “Hang on!” She shouted desperately. Wading through the muck as fast as she could, she lamented her disciplined safety. She should have brought Ajisai instead of botan; that way, she would have a chance to wrest NIGHT from Callisto. Instead, she was limited to her routine damage.

Some of the murky water sank into her left boot, and a cold shiver traveled from her heel to the top of her spine. It’s not real, she whispered to herself. But NIGHT is.

Acanthus lunged at the distracted bear, striking a brutal blow on his hind flank. But his jaws did not relent, and the tank still remained locked in the boss’ death grip. “Come on, you stupid pile of smelly fur. I’m right here, bite me instead.” Acanthus could have sworn the bear shot her a dismissive, over the shoulder glance before returning its attention to NIGHT. In an unfamiliar flash of emotions, she felt a peculiar desire not to win—but to KILL.

Ariel’s pulse quickened as NIGHT was wrenched from her stance and clamped in Callisto’s jaws, the bear’s primal fury making the air feel thick and charged. Her silver gaze narrowed, tracking each movement as the beast crushed NIGHT in its relentless grip, her friend’s struggle evident even from a distance.

Her hands tightened around the hilt of Nihilim’s Wrath, the dragon’s fang responding to her will as if it could feel her own growing resolve. Dark flames flickered to life along the katana’s edge, their shadows curling like smoke, hungry to strike.

Hold on, NIGHT!” Ariel’s voice was resolute as she pushed through the bog, each step drawing her closer to Callisto. Positioning herself with a low stance, she braced for an opportunity as the others worked to disorient the massive creature.

In one swift, lethal motion, Ariel surged forward, her cursed blade flashing with shadowy fire as she cut deep into the beast’s haunch. Her strike was relentless, the black flames licking at the wound, leaving a dark scar that smouldered even as she withdrew. She could feel the satisfaction of the cursed blade, its flames stoked by the clash of raw power and vengeance.

Ariel slid back, preparing for the bear’s next move, eyes fixed on the writhing creature. “We’re getting you out of this!” she called, her voice steady as she awaited the next opening to strike.

But it hadn't always been that way.

In this place of death, decay, and corruption, there was once untold beauty. Towering trees, their leaves caught in an eternal autumn, had stood like silent sentries. They had guarded the secrets that this small valley held, and the promises that were made to each brave enough to enter: promises of doors opened, lands discovered, and of floors cleared. To aid in the protection of this sacred spot, Callisto the Stalwart had been born of the land itself. For untold eternities, he had thrived in this place of beauty and wonder; he had slept in the caves, roamed the trees, and feasted upon the fish in the river. Even the people in the nearby towns had witnessed Callisto's majesty, though from a respectable distance. They would not trespass upon the land that belonged to him, and in return, he would do the same. The humans, the creature, and the floor itself existed in perfect harmony.

Until it hadn't.

The change did not happen overnight. Rather, Callisto felt his temper growing shorter, and his memory growing cloudy. The sensation of something crawling just beneath his skin consumed his every waking thought, until that same something began to gnaw at his mind. He no longer slept, or roamed, or fished, though that was just as well, as the land itself changed with him. The caves crumbled. The trees withered. The fish died by the hundreds. And the townsfolk who had so loved to spot Callisto in the woods? They spoke only of the abomination who now raged among the rot and the ruin.

Red fury burned in the beast’s eyes, a sharp contrast to the blue glow that suddenly parted Callisto’s jaws. It bellowed its frustration around the prize still clamped between its teeth, unwilling to release it without a fight. Even as vibrant lights danced around the bear, tearing open new gashes along his massive form, it held tight. Suddenly overcome with the urge to rip, to tear, to bathe the earth in blood, Callisto tried a final time to open the throat of the Player it held prisoner. Only the foreign cerulean light kept the boss from achieving its goal. With a snarl of equal parts disgust and rage, Callisto flung the Player away from it, a clawed paw swatting frantically to rid its mouth of the barrier.

Seeing that the barrier was holding true, the hunter would sigh with relief.  Though that was only for one short and lonely breathe.  There was much work to do from here, if the fates were allowing the use of their shield to him.  If only he could bestow that power to everyone, or at least reawaken the fate's armaments of the players that he knew rightfully had them.  That way they could fight on par, but that probably wouldn't work out too well.  There were two of them that were not in that fight, Yuki and Acanthus.  Would they not get the power that the fates could introduce?  There was only one thing he could think to do, but to bolster their offense now, more than ever.

Even more so as the start of the half way point was soon to come.  Some boss' have shown significant changes around now, but quite a few more would wait until the last quarter of their health.  They would have to wait and see, but that was not what the hunter was planning.  Raising his shield, and in turn the spectral shield would return back to his side.  Both would glow a variable iridescent color that would shimmer slightly before each of his compatriots would have their weapons shine just the same.

It was something she had heard her brother say once—probably a gamer battle cry of some sort. She leapt out of the muck, looking to score another critical hit. With Hirru’s bonus, she dealt another powerful blow to the boss, but she failed to find a weak point. What she did find, however, was an advantageous position on the far side of the bear, flanking it. With an uncharacteristic recklessness, she glossed over the fact that she was separated from the party. The thing hadn’t even hit her yet—what’s the worst it could accomplish? If this was as bad as Callisto got, then Kayaba had given them poor sport to hunt. Ignoring Hirru’s warning, she prepared to leverage her advantage into a powerful strike.

Violet hurled her weapon forward, allowing it to fly out at the boss as she turned to the rest of her teammates. Everyone was still at relatively high health, and nobody seemed to be lacking in health or energy at the given moment. Her friends on the other teams were doing well - though Freyd seemed to be taking a severe beating from the boss after it seemed to go straight for the throat, not that it was surprising (He had grabbed a rather extreme amount of aggro from the boss after all!), and none of the others seemed to be in danger of losing anyone. Thus, the raid seemed to be going quite well from the looks of things!

Even so...

"Don't drop your guard, We may almost be halfway through this, but this IS a boss raid!Ember smacked into her hand as she prepared to move again. "Bosses tend to be in phases, so be prepared to change your actions accordingly! As long as we work together, we should be just fine!" They still needed to be careful with their actions, or they would be suffering quite a few consequences as a result - something that their limited forces couldn't really afford at the moment.

The Paladin would see to it that her best friend was released from the jaws of the beast. The barrier around her kept her safe from any large amounts of damage. After trying several times to clench her in its jaws, Callisto would fling NIGHT away. Yuki would quickly fall back to catch her with aplomb before she struck the ground. The knight offered Night a smile as she put her friend back on her feet. “Got your back! Let’s show this bear our strength!” Yuki will say just as the damage buff came in.

She would speed ahead of her sword, spear alight with pink energy and static of electricity. Barely catching Callisto’s leg as he took a step, the spear would penetrate its target. “Stun’s up! Go crazy guys!” The Paladin would rally, putting herself between the target and her allies once again as they all rushed in with sword arts.

if anything was going to give her more pause, it was the cries towards her -- for her -- as the bear had been galloping about. her eyes darted to her team chasing after callisto, their words barely audible from on high, but an outstretched hand and a sudden cold breeze changed enough for her circumstances that when the bite came, incisors hadn't crushed her health bar through.

and then came the collapse.

she spun in the air. almost got out her sword for a straight down to the ground, too -- no way night was going to go out from fall damage in a boss fight without. but the instant she noticed yuki shift, night put her weight against the blow onto callisto, as it charged her by.

then, she let herself fall into yuki's embrace.

night gripped her friend tightly, not saying a word about her capture. but the moment the rally cry came for their attention towards the boss, she swallowed her fear, getting back up on her own two feet. "yeah," she said, under her breath. a nod. she tried not to meet her friend's eyes. "i can do that. thanks -- for letting me count on you, yuki."

she shot back to her allies with a holler. "i'm alright! i think hirru's barrier did something." night grinned as part of her performance, a glance to callisto, her expression sly.

"but y'know, i could've taken the hit anyway."

Ariel tightened her grip on her weapon, feeling its dark energy pulse in response to her determination. The black flames licking along the blade seemed to intensify as Callisto let out another guttural roar, its massive form staggering under the party’s relentless assault. The beast's crimson eyes locked onto her for a brief moment, and Ariel’s lips curled into a grim smile.

Let’s finish this...” she muttered under her breath.

With Yuki’s stun holding Callisto momentarily in place, Ariel surged forward. Her katana moved with a blur of deadly precision, slicing through the corrupted air. The shadowy flames surrounding the blade erupted, leaving a burning trail of searing darkness as it cleaved deep into Callisto’s shoulder.

The beast seemed to howl in agony, its roar reverberating through the decayed valley as ichor spilled from the wound. Ariel stepped back quickly, resetting her stance and preparing for its retaliation. She glanced briefly at NIGHT and Yuki, relief washing over her at their recovery, before returning her attention to the fight.

Her eyes flicked to her MP bar in the corner of her vision, the pale blue steadily draining with each skillful strike. It was the most depleted among the party, a testament to her relentless efforts. She clenched her jaw, knowing she couldn’t afford to hold back despite the dwindling resource. Every strike counted, and the team needed her at full force.

The weight of Callisto’s rage and corruption pressed heavy on the battlefield, but Ariel’s resolve burned just as fiercely. With her katana cloaked in Nihilim’s black flames, she murmured: Like the raid bosses before you, beast, you’re not invincible. We’ll take you down.

Had there been anything left of Callisto’s frayed and tattered sanity, the last vestiges now faded. Darkness fell upon the memories of past life, and in the black of night, the embers that burned away its sense of self sparked into a wildfire.

Its ripping flesh split and peeled apart as sinew and bone won out. portions of the sloughing canvas melted and blended together with the mire below, prompting a fell amalgamation of the murky, polluted portion of the floor itself and its mightiest denizen. Tendrils of decay welled up from the ghastly, turgid swamp and tried desperately to pull Him under, but his all-consuming rage would not be denied.

In place of empty eye sockets now glowed eldritch light, the bear skull pulsating through cracks that barely contained it. In the midst of wicked change, the massive, beastial claws mangled their way to collect a tithe from the Frontlines. The change to Callisto was sudden, overt, and alarming. Not simply visual, but also in the way it moved, scooping up not one, not two, but three Players in a frenzy.

The low lying clouds that hung around the battlefield shifted, wreathing the boss and its prey like a Reaper's garb. The Players could no longer see their fellows, now entangled with the abomination that once was Callisto.

The ground beneath the trespassers feet would began to give way, as if responding to the beckoning call of Callisto. The guardian of this grove, its home sought itself assistance with its outcry and nature itself obliged. Dark roots with sharpened barbs climb upon ankles and slink themselves through slips in armor with ease. A break neck embrace of greedy hands in the form of vines as they'd bind and find themselves tight and held fast. An earthen smell and a puncture of the skin confirms they were about to be dragged to the ground, a wench to remove these wretched invaders from the strength to stand. The gentle ticks of bars as the near insignificant damage would foreshadow something much greater to come. Rooted by the very roots they had trampled upon, bundled and ready to be delivered to the overseer's waiting maw. Those players would have but a moment or two to see themselves free, else the teeth upon their skin would begin to chew.

crap.

night felt herself blinking multiple times, watching the sight unfold before her. callisto unraveled, turned its insides out while the world fought to contain it and itself fighting back, writhing and snarling as hard as the other frontliners did. with the way the newfound tendrils shot out to grasp at their parties' tanks, night searched the skies for any signs of her pink-haired friend -- wasn't yuki just behind her a moment ago?!

the fog wasn't helping. night cursed herself for lacking that vision mod of absolute importance. maybe she should never have removed it from her kit in the first place. but she knew, still, vaguely where the ursine had been, so she charged into the fray with a shout. "don't stray too far from each other!"

it wasn't a command made with hope or reassurance. night wasn't the type for rallying. rather, when her sword found purchase upon the boss' sinew despite all signs that she was incredibly unlikely to do so, all she found was relief. the best defense to her at the moment, with her shield lost amidst the dark, was offence.

Violet grinned as Callisto's health finally began to dip below the halfway mark, celebrating internally as she charged up another sword art. After that first hiccup, now they were finally getting their money's worth with their damage. Yuki had gotten ensnared, Callisto pinning her to the ground with a roar. Ember launched forward, the bladed fan surging forward to cut through the bosses armor and health. She nodded to her teammates, her grin widening as she watched the rest of the teams moving in to help finish it off. Callisto was a worthy opponent, and he was holding on strong.

It was turning into a fight to the finish, and they were going to finish this - Just like they always did. "Keep at it, everyone! We only have a little bit longer!" she shouted, catching her fan. "This guy's gonna fall just like the rest of them, He's just a little meatier than most!

"don't stray too far from each other!" NIGHT’s disembodied voice rang through the heavy fog. Acanthus had lost sight of the party trying to flank Callisto. Callisto, in turn, did not seem preoccupied with Acanthus’ position. He was content to wreak havoc on the rest of the party while she whittled away at his health.

Acanthus knew she should be listening to NIGHT. The safest thing to do was to stay in formation, continue to attack and delay the boss. But Team One was doing well. Their team had avoided the worst of the damage; Callisto’s biggest hit faded to a distant memory with Hirru’s healing. Mathematically, their chokepoint in the fight wasn’t their ability to heal—it was their ability to hurt.

NIGHT would likely be furious that Acanthus was adapting the plan. But once they made it through, NIGHT would see that pushing the extra damage through would be the right call.

Drawing back, she found a firm grip and willed her Sword Art to begin. Then, she swung her left foot back and lowered botan until its tip brushed the top of the mire. From that point of contact, a hint of red flashed just beneath the water’s surface. A brilliant spark of vermillion traveled from the water, to blade, all the way down to the pommel. Acanthus felt the hot, almost uncontrollable energy coursing through her body, begging her to tear the bear apart. “Finesse,” Nymoria’s voice whispered from just behind her right ear. She had never attempted ST-B before, let alone in a boss fight. With a deep breath, Acanthus imagined the wave, just like she did in Nemo’s garden. She could do this.

Acanthus unleashed the wave with a shout. Botan twisted down in her hand, and Callisto howled in pain. Two slashing strikes to the left, and another down. Callisto backed away, and Acanthus pressed forward to keep the gap small. Downward slash, two slices to the left, another downward strike, press down left left down—the combo finished in a feverish trio of upward attacks, and the afterimage of the sword art shimmered in a series of red lines radiating from a single point, reminiscent of higanbana. The glow lingered for a moment before vanishing into the murky air.
