That hurt. That shit really hurt. What made matters worse, Oscar's vision quickly became obfuscated by an effect not unlike a blot of ink on a screen. Peering through the holes in the umbra, he made his way toward the feasts from before the fight. Nothing was going to plan. He'd yet to deal any damage and the Boss' AOE had cut through the party like a 4000 degree knife through butter.

The team was quick to respond, however. The damage was quickly healed up while Oscar fumbled towards his diamonds. If he couldn't do damage, he could at least try to take a hit. Before he scarfed down his pressurized carbon, he decided to drop a line to a friend.

“Hey Lessa! Do you have a Mass Crystal? I can't see too good so just throw it at my face or something!”

Perhaps he might save himself some effort by letting it shatter upon his visage. But, the absolute peach that she was, Lessa hand-delivered. Even left with a quip. That was supposed to be Oscar's job. Still, he couldn't be mad at his deliverer of the healing juice.

“That one was pretty good, Lessa,” Oscar called back as he crushed the crystal in his hand. “Really caught me lacking too.”

The monstrous Callisto stands in the center of the battlefield, its immense frame trembling with the building tension of a storm waiting to break. Its fur, thick and matted with the dirt of the wild, ripples with every breath it takes, the deep, ragged inhalations almost vibrating the air. The animal is still—too still. Its eyes, glazed over and unfathomable, narrow in a dangerous sliver, fixated on the source of its growing anger. Watching the deep wounds it had inflicted on its prey heal over, its animalistic confusion at the spectacle merely adding more fuel to the fire.

At first, it is the subtle tremor of its muscles, the slight tightening of its massive limbs, that betrays the bear’s mounting fury. It clenches its powerful jaws, teeth grinding audibly, the air between them sharp and electric. Its shoulders roll with the tension of a coiled spring, every fiber of its being teetering on the edge of explosion.

The low, guttural growl begins deep within its chest—an ominous rumble that seems to shake the very earth beneath its paws. The sound is low at first, as if the bear is weighing the decision, holding itself back with an ancient, instinctual restraint. But that restraint is fraying, unraveling with every heartbeat, every breath. The growl intensifies, growing in volume and ferocity, rising like a wave, its pitch vibrating through the trees, warning all that danger is coming.

The bear’s massive head swings from side to side, nostrils flaring, eyes flashing with primal rage. It is no longer merely a predator. It is the embodiment of wild, uncontained fury. Its claws, thick and razor-sharp, scrape across the ground, leaving deep gouges in the dirt as the animal shifts its weight, preparing to unleash the force building inside it. The fur along its spine stands on end like the bristles of a spear.

As its rage consumes it, the bear lumbers forward with terrifying intent, its heavy steps reverberating through the forest. With each motion, the air grows thicker, charged with an undeniable presence—the raw, unyielding force of an apex predator driven to a frenzy. Its lips curl back, revealing rows of cruel teeth as it lets out a final, earth-shaking roar—a sound so full of wrath that it seems to shake the trees themselves.

The beast is no longer controlled; it is a living, breathing torrent of rage, an unstoppable force ready to crush anything in its path.

After the chaos of the last round, Oscar was able to breathe a small sigh of relief that things were now relatively calm. That being said, this confounding blindness was certainly making things difficult. His vision was still mostly dark, rendering effective combat all but impossible. Still, he felt that, perhaps, he could lean on the System just a bit and try his luck. 20 percent was 20 percent after all. It would matter how blind he was if his swing resulted in a crit.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to pull it off. A swing and a miss. Still, the din of combat and the sound of bladed collisions told him that his party members, at least, we able to land decisive blows against their ursine adversary.

But, one of the consequences of near total blindness was, obviously, not being able to see. Oscar couldn’t make out his position relative to everyone else. He couldn’t shake the notion that he was standing in the midst of things, in the way and impotent. Not wanting to be a burden on his party, Oscar tried to shuffle in the opposite direction of the sounds of combat.

His foot hooked on a root as he moved, his legs kicked out from under him and he found himself falling into a pool of rotten sludge with a sickening splash. He felt the rot bleed soak into his back as he sank into the shallow pool of acrid mire. Like a bathtub slowly filling before a nice soak, the liquid slowly crawled its way up his body. It clung to him, penetrating the fibers of his clothes.

He hated the feeling. It weighed him down. A fresh rush of fetid air invaded his nostrils. He pushed off from his elbows, sitting up to sit in the pool of rot. He blinked slowly, his hand reaching to the nape of his neck to pull a wet something from his hair. Was it a leaf? Or a bit of discarded meat? He couldn’t tell. All he knew was that it was gross.

Thankfully, he was able to keep his lunch down this time. Had this happened a few rounds prior, he might have lost it again. But Oscar was starting to get frustrated. Irritating as things were, anger was a good way to keep himself from vomiting again. It helped that, at this angle, he would have wound up making a worse mess of himself.

“I’m going to need to find a way to invent a washing machine after this,” Oscar said with a sigh. “Realism has gone too far.”

Morningstar huffed, grappled to the bear. Callisto targeted the tanks, but it was so big that he found himself dodging regardless. He was built for it, at least. A gust of hot wind blasted him in the face, a side effect of the boss’ heavy swings. He only took a second to breathe before rushing back in.

His party was holding up well enough, considering circumstances. Even after Callisto’s maddening roar, they had taken no concerning damage. The golden glow that enveloped Morningstar’s sword suddenly burned black. It bit through the beast’s tough hide, carving a deep red line.

A reactive swat warded him off, but otherwise Callisto paid him no mind. Its attention was elsewhere, on higher value targets. With tanks and healers readily available, there was nothing it could do to destroy the players. He kept his eye on other groups as well as his own, watching for threats. The raid party stood strong.

The enemy coiled, in a way that only a lumbering mass of a meat and muscle and fury could. Thirsty, for blood and vengeance, every step it took made the ground rumble, the air itself became pregnant with malicious intent. Callisto would not be deprived for much longer. Even with the party returned to almost full strength, they were still in mortal danger.

Alk was in no condition to fight. Not now, whatever visions he'd seen leaving him still stunned. Oscar, Astralin, Morningstar, Katoka, every Frontliner kept up their attacks, trusting that their tanks and healers would have their backs.

Koga would.

The swordsman positioned himself right in Callisto's line of site, lifting his sword high into the air, its black flame coming to life as he did. "Callisto!" Koga shouted, "Your forest! I'll burn it to the ground! Face me! Fight me!"

God, Koga hoped he hadn't just made things worse by saying that.

A lumbering mass of rotten flesh and bone charged it's way towards the groups of players with the same force as an out of control dump truck. The great beast was trying it's damnedest to run them all over, flatten them into meat pancakes. They were all too smart to remain in its way.

Katoka positioned herself out of the path of destruction as Callisto bulldozed passed. IT was then that she saw a brief opportunity to strike. Calling on the primal hunger of her weapon once again, she rushed forward. Energy crackling around her in dark bolts of electricity as she used a large rock as a ramp, leaping from the top and landing a blow to the undead beast's flank. Using her weight as she clung to the hilt of her weapon, the samurai drug the blade from the top of its entry point to the underside of his belly. The sound of buzzing and zapping filled the air, along with the sent of burnt flesh and ozone from the wound.

As her feet touched the ground she tugged with all her strength to retrieve her sword before retreating once again to safe distance.

                      Katoka stepped in between Astralin and the Boss, then Koga would proceed to get Callisto's attention. Astralin was slightly relieved. "Thanks..."

     The beast roared out, as if attempting its evocation once more, but it would seem that the monster's madness would fall upon deaf ears this time. Astralin watched as the battle raged, waiting for an opportunity to help. Oscar's attack would miss, Katoka and Morningstar would tear into the beast with their weapons, and Koga would call out a threat as to challenge Callisto. She could only hope they all knew what they were doing...

                 Astralin was unsure of what to do next. She could only wait for the next opportunity to help...hopefully she wouldn't have to make another desperate recovery from a dangerous hit from harrowing evocation like the last time the boss did that. No, she would just need to keep her abilities at the ready. If anyone started to struggle, she would intend to get them back on their feet.

But it hadn't always been that way. 

In this place of death, decay, and corruption, there was once untold beauty. Towering trees, their leaves caught in an eternal autumn, had stood like silent sentries. They had guarded the secrets that this small valley held, and the promises that were made to each brave enough to enter: promises of doors opened, lands discovered, and of floors cleared. To aid in the protection of this sacred spot, Callisto the Stalwart had been born of the land itself. For untold eternities, he had thrived in this place of beauty and wonder; he had slept in the caves, roamed the trees, and feasted upon the fish in the river. Even the people in the nearby towns had witnessed Callisto's majesty, though from a respectable distance. They would not trespass upon the land that belonged to him, and in return, he would do the same. The humans, the creature, and the floor itself existed in perfect harmony.

Until it hadn't.

The change did not happen overnight. Rather, Callisto felt his temper growing shorter, and his memory growing cloudy. The sensation of something crawling just beneath his skin consumed his every waking thought, until that same something began to gnaw at his mind. He no longer slept, or roamed, or fished, though that was just as well, as the land itself changed with him. The caves crumbled. The trees withered. The fish died by the hundreds. And the townsfolk who had so loved to spot Callisto in the woods? They spoke only of the abomination who now raged among the rot and the ruin.

Callisto gazed over the gathered party, its enormous form shuddering with each drawn breath. Fury, power, and something entirely foreign rolled off the floor boss in waves. Where it had once been tasked with mere protection, it now guarded its prize with a frenzied, maniacal obsession. It did not see the curious humans it had long ago found so fascinating. It saw only threats, and a faint red haze creeping in from all sides.

At last, the blindness effect had lifted. Oscar paused for a moment, rising back to his feet and taking stock of the status of everyone. It seemed that despite their rocky start, the team had fallen into some semblance of equilibiirum. It was a struggle, but they had adapted to the boss mechanics. This was good. Now, perhaps Oscar could have some impact beyond wrenching Alkor loose from a bear. 

His hands were slick from the mire. That was fine, he decided. The first time had caught him by surprise. If the team could adapt, so could he. He swapped hands, freeing up his sword hand so that he could wipe it on a nearby tree. Perhaps it didn’t matter here, but he would swear off raids in their entirety if his weapon were to slip from his grasp mid-swing.

Another swap back from right to left and Oscar took a deep breath to steady himself. In the next instant, his blade found purchase in the bear’s head. He’d forced himself to relax, driven the concerns from his mind. His arm moved like a whip, focusing considerable strengh into a jarring blow. His weapon sunk deep, encountering resistance from the hulk behemoth’s thick muscle and eventually coming to a stop entirely when it reached the bear’s skull.

The blow overwhelmed the bear’s strength, if only for a moment and if only thanks to shock. Its head dipped low allowing Oscar to wrench his blade free and retreat. He’d not done much damage, but the Stun would still have an impact. Ordinarily, he would have celebrated his turn in luck. But he found himself taking this more seriously than he normally would. So he remained silent, focused, and ready to move into the next round.

The bear had thrown him aside, hard enough to slam into a nearby tree and splinter it. Aching in the muck, Alkor had spent the last minute from his spinning head. Koga had seized the moment, jumping in heroically to take Callisto's attention for himself- for better or for worse. That wasn't ideal, even if he had come prepared to do just that. Koga was equipped to hold on to the hate, but not to keep it for long. This was the contingency. Give Alkor enough time to collect himself so that he could do the job he was supposed to be doing. Now, it was his turn to return the favor. Keep Koga alive, just as he'd done for the rest of the group.

Alkor slowly fought his way back to his feet, reeking of death and rot, hand gripping his wicked blade tightly, driving it deeper into the mud. With his eyes narrowed, he grit his teeth, seething. the burning of his flesh, the smoky darkness that permeated his body deepened in accordance with his venom. The hatred, the vitriol that sloughed off him like decayed flesh. His gaze drove daggers into the beast, his trembling body forcing each slow step toward it as he burned himself alive. He placed a metal palm on Koga's shoulder as the man stood firmly in the face of the creature, not taking his eyes off his victim.

"This burden is mine," he intoned. "You should never have  had to bear it at all."

He took a deep breath, and his voice plummeted into the abyss with him. The grave sound scratched at the tattered psyche of the beast, filling its disjointed thoughts with nothing but the Dark Knight.

"Never again."

                                             Astralin watched as the battle continued to unfold. There really wasn't much she could do without an emergency. This was a good thing, but Astralin hated feeling useless. Thankfully, her allies didn't seem to be the type to do something stupid...so far.

       Astralin looked to her hands, which still had those mystical handwraps bearing the power of ice, lightning, and storm. It was quite the temptation, but this was a Floor Boss, not some Event Boss that was easy in comparison to a beast like this. No, it was far too risky for the current moment. Astralin couldn't risk endangering herself and the party. She had to play on the defensive and stick to pure support tactics...not that she was going to like it, of course. She checked her party, they all seemed fine, though it might be best to make sure that energy didn't drop too fast...

                 She made her way over to Katoka, and her hands would glow as raw energy would gather and form into a sphere. She then lightly tossed the glowing sphere of light that was arcing with what may have been some kind of bolts, towards Katoka. When it landed upon Katoka's Avatar, it would seep in at a rapid speed, like a sponge absorbing water, except much quicker. Jolts of raw energy coursed along Katoka's avatar as they surged into her, revitalizing her and replenishing her energy. Astralin waved to her. "Give it your all!" She encouraged.

The samurai felt some of her energy return with Astralin's help. She flashed the girl a cocky grin and gave her a thumbs up, "Thanks for the top off, I needed a bit of a boost."

Turning her attention back to the bear at hand, her smile faltered a bit. She had hit the thing with a strike that felt stronger than anything she had done in the past, but thanks to whatever abilities it had the number ticked down to a measly 750. Katoka felt her upper lip quiver ever so slightly into the makings of a snarl. She didn't like when her prey had tricks up their sleeves.

Kat blinked for a moment after that thought had crossed her mind. Prey? When did she ever think of the various creatures in Aincrad as 'prey'? Her eyes fell slowly to the blade in her hands before she rolled her eyes. Of course, there were bound to be consequences hitting multiple strikes back to back with a cursed sword like this. Slapping her face with a free hand she gathered her senses, pushing the consciousness of the katana away from her mind. "Yeah, no blood for you if you're going to put weird thoughts in my head."

Rushing in with her own strength this time Katoka struck at the side of Callisto, the bright light from her sword art flashing brightly across the battlefield. As she leapt back once again to observe the fight her eyes were drawn to a nearby boulder protruding from the muck. "Keep his attention as long as you can! I think I have an idea!"

"Keep his attention as long as you can! I think I have an idea!"

From up front, Morningstar raised an eyebrow. He agreed, unsure of what idea Katoka could possibly have come up with. Star dipped in and out of the bear's range, occasionally clipping it with quick swipes of his sword. He angled his posture in the exact way the system required him to, bringing his sword up high and charging an ethereal sword art. The edge of his blade burned gold as he swung it down, ripping into the bear's flesh. Time was apparently needed, and so he would buy it for as long as he could, until Kat was ready to unveil her master plan.

He kept pushing, creeping past his limits and battering the boss. The tanks did their jobs wonderfully, maintaining constant aggro. Their pull never once wavered, and Callisto refrained from ever looking Star or his party's way.

As the battle wore on, Callisto's attacks had become more and more wild, less controlled. Or at least whatever had passed for controlled for an oversized bear with anger issues. Sharp swipes became wild swipes, lethal bites became wild thrashing. Despite the massive paws and cavernous maw that came looking for Koga, to wipe him off the face of the...Aincrad? the swordsman, seasoned fighter, seasoned warrior, and stacked with EVA, slid past each and every blow.

The man leapt over the next clawed paw to come swinging for him, leaving him hanging in the air. A perfect target, unable to move, unable to get away. Callisto took advantage and swept at Koga again with his other paw, to no avail. The ring of steel echoed through the cavern as Koga was launched backwards, into the rancid muck, tumbling until Koga slowed himself to a stop with his katana driven into the ground.

A gauntleted hand gripped Koga's shoulder. "This burden is mine," Alkor's said. "You should never have  had to bear it at all."
Koga looked up at the man, with a gleeful grin, a wild look in his eye. The heat of combat. The thrill. Koga had become so used to the aggro being targeted elsewhere, allowing him to just focus on dealing damage, for so long, it'd become boring. But this?

Oh, this was fun.

"Don't sweat it," the ronin said, standing and stretching his neck.
"Never again."
"Tell you what," Koga replied, still grinning. "Let me hold onto ol' Pooh Bear's attention a bit longer. I'm having fun with this. You can have the spotlight back in bit."

Without waiting for a reply Koga took off towards Callisto again, sidestepping a stomping attack, sending the acrid water high into the air, raining down on Koga as he cut at the paw before it could retract. "Keep his attention as long as you can! I think I have an idea!" The voice of one of his party members drew Koga attention for just a moment. Katoka, her eyes set on a not-too-distant boulder. Koga got the idea.

The swordsman switched directions, instead of running at Callisto, he dashed towards the boulder, leaping onto and off of it, right towards a nearby tree, where he drove his katana deep into its trunk. A makeshift platform. "Kat!" Koga called, drawing her attention, hoping she'd understand the plan.
