The door opened into a basin, walls in every direction spanning skyward like a bowl. Dusty and barren, the once lush overgrowth that climbed them rotted less than halfway up. Trees like blackened, coarse hands reached out toward the stars, their last throes of hopelessness a testament to the evil that now lay claim to the place. It was no one's fault, perhaps; but in their failure to act, it had become everyone's. 

The twenty eighth floor had fought admirably to reclaim this space. Dried out grass and the fetid stench of leaves long past autumn breathed death into the offensive nostrils of each Player in turn, welcoming them to the fray.

To His Domain. 

To His Grave.

Murky pools sloshed beneath their feet as the valiant Players waded deeper into the wastes. All the while, He watched. As they came to the central portion of the valley, players would see the last vestiges of beauty that remained
in this place, hanging off the twisted corpses of a copse of trees. The haunting red of Higanbana- Japanese Spider Lilies- looming all around them.

And they withered at the sound of a piercing, agonized howl. The deep red color twisted into rotten brown as petals fell away, decorating the murky bog with their remains. In their place, He stood, staring back at the Players.

Callisto.


Callisto the Tainted | DMG: 300 | MIT: 65 | ACC: -1 | BLIND 2 (8-10) | RAMPAGE [0/6] | Iron Flesh

Abilities:
Rampage | For each successful attack on Callisto, its accuracy increases +1 and its damage by +50 until the end of its next turn (Up to the maximum of +300 DMG, +6 ACC) against your party. In addition, Callisto has [Focus]
Iron Flesh | Callisto’s durability halves damage dealt from all status effects (DoT).
Resist Death | Whenever Callisto would sustain more than 1000 damage after mitigation, that damage is set to 750 maximum.
Totem of the Bear | Due to Callisto’s unbridled rage, HIghest Hatred Decays by -1 every turn as it seeks out prey in a violent uncontrolled frenzy. Healing done by sources outside of skills from a target who does not have the highest hatred will yield +4 hatred provided that target has no effects that improve hatred generation (such as Howl or Taunt) as Callisto senses weakness.
Consuming Night | The sheer corruption that bleeds from this beast assails your vision as it destroys your senses. Callisto applies [Blindness 2] whenever it performs a successful critical attack, this effect does not stack but will refresh.

  • BLIND 2 | Reduces the targets Accuracy, Evasion and Loot Dice by -4 for 2 turns.

Ichorous Sweep | Whenever Callisto rolls a CD: 4-7 it will lick its claws and aggressively swipe at the target with the highest hate in each party. If the attack is successful, In addition to standard damage, the target is inflicted with TXC VNM 4 and Envenom 4

  • TXC VNM 4 | Deals 64 unmitigated poison damage to the target for 3 turns
  • ENV-O 4 | deal 64 unmitigated poison damage each enemy turn for 4 turns. Stacks with itself

Reckless Ensnare | Whenever Callisto rolls a CD: 8-9 it will brandish its claws out and grapple the target with the highest hate in each party instead of attacking. While the target is grappled their evasion is reduced to the maximum of 0 and their post action can only be used to attempt to free themselves, ending the grapple on a LD:15+. Other members of the party can attempt to free them (using the same roll) as their post action.
For the Throat | If Callisto has any targets grappled, it can use its post action to perform a special bite attack against all grappled targets. This attack circumvents all forms of defense (Autohit, Unmitigated) dealing 600 unmitigated damage and inflicting Bleed 4. Damage from this attack can only be reduced by Parry, Misperception, Rampart and [Counter]. Barrier will negate the damage entirely.

  • BLD 4 | Deals 96 unmitigated bleed damage the the target for 2 turns


Halls of Madness [AoE] | Whenever Callisto rolls a CD: 10-12 it will shriek in a blood curdling howl that targets the entire party. Any targets struck by this attack take 400 damage and are stricken with a stack of [Madness]. The damage from this attack can be mitigated


[Madness] deals 12 unmitigated damage over 4 turns, any further applications will refresh this effect and increase the stacks by 1. This does not increase the damage, but instead once a target has sustained [Madness 3] their next turn is decided by Callisto. This requires the player to respond and do their best to aid Callisto, who is regarded as a close and dear friend until this fades. On his post he will offer a short goal the player must attempt to fulfill such as:

Player A will attack the party
Player A will attack Player B
Player B will heal Callisto

Any post action, free action [item] or free action [skill] used from a player this way treats their source as Callisto (Following Hatred, Mitigation, Targeting etc.). Once this turn has been used by Callisto, madness 3 fades.


Status Ailment Effects:
Stun | Disables the use of Ichorus Sweep until the end of Callisto’s Next Turn against that party instead of removing a post action. All  Grappling Familiar Cooldowns Increased by 2
Paralyze | Will immediately end a grapple made by Callisto against a member of your party instead of removing a post action.
Freeze | Removes Focus from Rampage until the end of Callisto’s Next Turn on attacks made against your party instead of removing a post action.
Delay | Reduces CD rolls by -1 until the end of Callisto’s Next Turn on all attacks made against your party. Cannot stack and this only applies to attacks made against your party. Delay also reduces Callisto’s accuracy by 2 if benefiting from [Rampage].
Phase | Allows the user to ignore the effects of Resist Death when activated.


Alternate Conditions:
Barrier | Will prevent Callisto from using For the Throat against targets affected by Barrier
Shatter | Will allow DoT’s to deal full damage to Callisto from sources within your party instead of reducing Callisto’s Mitigation
Hypnosis | Lasts for twice its normal duration, but its effects only benefit the user
Lullaby | Lasts for a single turn, negates the effects of Rampage against your party.
Queen’s Honey | Offering this item to Callisto as a post action will cause it not to act against your party for 1 turn as long as no further hostile post actions are taken by the party.
Loot Die | Food and Trinket Enhancements Increase the LD rolled to break Reckless Ensnare. Lockpicking and Dismantling also apply to these rolls.
Antidote | Blocks the Effects of Blindness/Madness given they are status ailments. Each will consume a separate charge if both are applied.
Purify | Can remove the effects of Blindness or Madness when used.
Probiotics | Reduces the damage taken from Bleed 4, Envenom (Offensive) 4, Toxic Venom 4
Forgotten King’s Authority | Can remove the madness condition, but only once 3 stacks have been obtained. However this can only be done for the first full application, repeat usage will not remove the effects of madness.
Kumatetsu (Totem) | +1 Additional Base Damage, Does not stack with Memory of Battle

It was easy to forget that they were within a towering labyrinth spanning between the Twenty-Eighth and Twenty-Ninth floors. The mangled corpses of thick barked trees seemed ever consuming, and what the naked eye could perceive past that was just ominous clouds of fog in the darkness. It was not until the gathering stumbled upon a set of doors made for a giant. Silence fell upon the frontliners, tension so thick it could barely be cut with their blades. Broken abruptly by the ominous creaking of hinges, the large doors - that last moment of safety and security - opened to reveal the theater of battle within. Pin page

The forest before was dead -- this was putrid, decaying. 

Their foe revealed themselves, heavy foot falls crunching long, overdried roots of fallen trees in its wake. Its fur matted with blood, unknown whether it was its own or its previous victims', and all sorts of weaponry jammed into its back like some demented porcupine. All to no avail, made obvious by the still living bear - if it was at that. Looking closer, it was infected. With what, he had no clue, but some of its flesh was rotten to the bone. The usual, piercing red eyes of previous floor bosses was absent, and even within this darkness, he could see the corrupt eyes glazed over. Gray and blind. But that did not seem to hinder it at all in being able to sense exactly where the players stood. Exactly where he stood.

It was time. And God only knew whether he was truly ready or not, but there was no turning back. Calisto approached with slow, predatory steps, darkened drool oozing from a growling snarl through whatever was left of its lips. Jomei slowly inhaled through parted lips, the air tasting of rot and decay. Lowering his rapier hand to the side, his free hand would slowly unlatch the violin from his hip. Raising the instrument to his shoulders, he would slowly breathe out an exhale. The thin strings that followed along the length of his blade would glide along the face of the violin. Wait. He stopped for a moment, moving the violin from his shoulder to tune the a string. A small pluck with his finger tip. Perfect. 

A smirk spawned from the sudden instilling of confidence within himself. Suddenly, he felt as though this is the role he was meant to play. Combining his musical talent with his combat prowess. Starting with a string of sustained notes to get the feel for the weapon-instrument combination, Jomei slowly worked up the tempo. The ballad he played was powerful, loud. Distracting. "Oi, Pooh Bear!" The ginger would shout at the beast, his voice booming as he activated his Focused Howl "I thought we were supposed to be fighting some big fella, not Yogi Bear's, dryshite cousin!" He could feel those dead eyes shift in his direction, his mockery catching the bear's attention. "That's right, come get me." Jomei would say to himself as he fought to keep the beast's attention with his music. 

"There's an old Irish saying. Translates to about.. 'May you be in Heaven a full half hour before the devil knows your dead.'" He looked at each of his comrades once more, "We're all from different walks of life, so not sure if my heaven is the same as yours, but, if this thing goes sideways and we all end up there--meet me at the bar. I'm buying." His smirk would ignite into a grin as he turned once more to face Callisto. "Watch out for each other, we'll talk again on Floor Twenty Nine!"

He'd experienced boss fights twice now (three times?) and each time, there was a whole bunch of people who would shout out threats and quirky one liners. Why? It couldn't understand you. Not in the same way that a person could. He couldn't wrap his head around it. Was it something they did because they were scared? Stupid? Did it make them feel better? Sometimes he couldn't help but feel that people forgot they were trapped in a game. Wasn't that a funny thought? 

Whatever. It wasn't hurting him, and it wasn't his place to comment on it. He emerged from the shadows like an animal from an oil spill, drenched in an inky blackness. He spun a blade into his hand and flicked it towards Callisto, a single crimson streak. He watched long enough to ensure the attack had landed before falling backwards into that darkness, disappearing into thin air once more.

rot. rot. rot.

she reaches into the air and catches a fistful of falling petals before they could be trampled into the ground like the rest. vibrant red, shapes narrow and curled at the ends, she rubs the leaves between her fingertips and the sap that comes forth dirties her laced gloves. they died the moment they were plucked from their stems, but she could still press them. entrap their image in a place under her care. she did the very same for the diseased plants in her garden, one lifetime ago.

but when she opens her hand, the flowers are already withered. she had not saved them from their end, only delayed it by seconds. her lips move as she, regretful, lets all but one drift to the ground to join their companions in rest, but her words are drowned by the racket of four assault squads spinning into action all at once like a well-oiled machine. then she extends her right hand, a black key held between her knuckles. she waits.

jomei, leading their group, raises a violin to his shoulder. with a rapier as his bow, he begins to play.

her memory grows claws.

in her mind's eye, another image interposes over the violinist's back -- someone far more graceful in their playing; longer hair, narrower shoulders, cloak a deeper red; who would never allow her to stand behind them like this, not without a scheme concealed beneath the fold of their wrist. because she would have discarded that trust anyway, would have pried into their rib cage even if her hands were all that were left to her, slaked her hatred on hearing them choke.

"merde," arabelle spits. "je te vois partout."

out of all the groups she could have chosen, it had to be the one that reminded her of them.

she tears her red eyes from the sight and storms past their tank before he could finish addressing the group. she needs to get away. she tosses a glance over her shoulder as she goes, mutters in a low voice, "i'm off. stop talking about dying. we're going to win."

arabelle twirls the key between her fingers. in the space between one furious bound and the next, it erupts into a pillar of black flame into a massive war scythe. she cuts between attacking players, or perhaps space is generously made for her, and the moment she has a clear shot, she pauses in her approach. the flames build, the woman amidst them unharmed, her dark gaze locked on her target. she channels her anger, her bitterness, her abandonment into her weapon, and amaterasu, her perfect match, greedily drinks it in.

and with a sound akin to a thunderclap, the distance closes and she rams a completed sword art into the rotted bear's shoulder. her keen ears pick up a crack. not enough. she drives her scythe back in again, then suddenly pulls away, sensing another player darting in for their opportunity to strike.

skipping backwards as callisto the tainted begins to move, her teeth bare in a smile.

she's feeling great.

The mass streamed through the door like water through a spillway, and as Lessa watched, the crowd grew smaller. She watched NIGHT, her guildmate and good friend, as she led the way into the room. Baldur followed, his long hair swinging as he turned away from her. Then there was Alkor, walking alongside Oscar, and the woman felt her palms growing damp within her gauntlets. Once upon a time, Alkor had walked into a boss fight much like this one, and hadn’t walked out again. Lessa pursed her lips, drawing a long, deep breath, before slowly exhaling again. She turned to her party.

Jomei, his red hair windswept, his olive eyes wide and lit with wildfire. Cordelia, her white hair shining eerily against the forest’s crimson light. An unfamiliar face, whose name was Arabelle, according to Lessa’s HUD. Only four? Her gaze flicked up to the names of those in her raid party, and her heart thudded far too violently beneath her breastplate.

Bahr.

Pinball.

Despite the situation, the thought of the men fighting side-by-side tore a bark of laughter from her as she finally entered the boss’ domain. The fight that awaited her remained shrouded in mystery, but one fact was clear - it certainly would not be boring.

Lessa moved up alongside Jomei, pausing to gaze up at the massive bear. Horror and wonder swirled in her stomach and behind her eyes, but her voice remained steady as she whispered, “Go get’em, Jom.”

Then she dropped back, assuming her support position behind the tank. He drew his sword, and she prepared herself for his shouted taunts. Instead, she was met by the sharp, precise voice of his violin. The Guardian let her head fall back, simply allowing the music to wash over her as she gazed up at the twisted, gnarled fingers of decaying trees. By the time his final notes faded, and he turned to address his party, Lessa’s sword was already in her hand. She grinned back at him. “We’re behind you all the way!”

All around her, tanks began lobbying for the bear’s attention. Amid the shouts, and flashes of triggered skills, Lessa caught sight of Hirru. With a sudden pang of panic, she realized that she hadn’t passed him the antidote that they had discussed prior to the fight. Without pausing to consider it further, she called up her inventory with her freehand while she jogged toward him.

“Hirru!” she called out, a small jar of Tiger Balm materializing in her cupped palm. She tossed it to him once she had his attention, and flashed him a quick, apologetic smile. “Sorry for the delay. Good luck!”

Only heartbeats later, she was back with her own party. Or, at least two-thirds of it. Wherever Pinball and Bahr were, she could only hope that they were in position, and ready for whatever followed.

Her blue eyes bounced between the two damage dealers before finally settling on Arabelle. “Hey, I’m going to hit you with a Hyperactive, okay? It’s slow, but it’ll help you replenish some of your energy.” Did she need to explain all of this to the other woman, especially in the heat of battle? Probably not, but talking through it somehow helped the baby support feel better about her decision. Lessa lifted Arcael's Might, leveled it at the young woman’s chest, and forced her will through the weapon’s length. Light burst from the blade, a shimmering display of blues and purples, before plunging into Arabelle’s core. As a result, Arabelle began to glow with the faintest periwinkle light. “It’ll fade when the effect does,” Lessa assured her party-mate. 

Then she turned to square her shoulders against Callisto. Whatever came next, they’d be ready for it. 

Or they wouldn’t.

But at least they’d be together in the end.

A gust of trapped air wafted past Cordelia as the gates to the boss room opened. In that moment, she felt reminded of days in autumn, when the rain had just subsided and what lingered in its place was the unusual yet somewhat pleasant smell of wet leaves and morning dew. Then immediately her senses were bombarded. A scent so strong of death and rot that she could taste it on the tip of her tongue. Decrepit and ancient air that’s housed defeated corpses for God knows how long danced along her bare skin, sending shivers down her spine and causing her heart to beat out of her chest. The clack of heels and shuffling of boots were followed by the splatter of water that reeked of decay, only seeming to make the smell worse. And last of all, the sight. Warped trees stretched up along the walls like limbs seeking refuge from a terrible fate. The swordswoman’s steady gaze followed a trail of crimson, a starking contrast to the eerie darkness that loomed over the room like a heavy blanket, and she sucked in a sharp breath when her eyes finally recognized the peculiar shape of the petals – only to immediately regret it as the taste of rotting flesh filled her lungs. 

How ironic it was that the only thing that seemed to escape death here was something that symbolized death itself. 

Then came a pained howl, and there it was; a bear shrouded in shadow and littered with evidence of failures to take its life. The brilliant vermillion that once decorated the crevices of the room fell away into a repulsive brown, drained from both color and life, leaving only the hulking form of Callisto the Tainted.

Instinct puppeteered her like a marionette on strings as she drew her katana effortlessly. There was little light to reflect off of the blade’s surface, but Cordelia could feel the hum of energy thrumming through the Carver of Demons. It felt almost right to be faced to face with the beast, as if both she and the sword had been waiting their whole lives to claim the soul of a tainted creature beyond help. Months of second-guessing herself had led her to emerge with a newfound purpose in life— a purpose she couldn't quite explain in words but something she felt deep in her soul. Whatever it was, it had led her to this very moment, and God be damned if she didn’t fulfill it. 

In her newly garnered confidence, she hadn’t realized that the rapid beating of her heart was now accompanied by the rhythmic staccato of a violin. A determined melody filled the air as sword met instrument; the crunching of strings and trilling of notes weaved their way into the atmosphere– along with various (with what she was assuming) Irish profanities and insults. And although Jomei’s final words to the rest of the party were morbid and quite honestly confused her, Cordelia matched his enthusiasm with a sharp nod. “See you on Floor Twenty-Nine,” she repeated quietly before extending her sword and following after Arabelle, who was already well on her way across the battlefield.

Onimaru clung to her side like a dutiful companion as her boots trekked across mangled corpses and wilted petals. Her eyes quickly found Arabelle’s silhouette, and just as she backed off from her own attack, Cordelia closed in with a flurry of silver hair. Skilled hands drove the blade into the still-fresh wound, and a guttural sound left her throat as she dug her katana through Callisto’s flesh before ripping it free. It was fortunate that there was no viscera that followed, but the stench of death invaded her throat the longer she lingered around the beast. 

Cordelia retreated backwards with light feet, just barely holding in her breakfast.

Bahr's lips spread into a grin as he bore witness to his teammates' boisterous declarations and camaraderie. Who would've thought he'd land himself on a team with Lessa and a musician? And was that Arabelle? He was pretty sure he hadn't been on a squad with her since the Star-Crossed Lovers event some years ago. He wanted to greet each of them, but his stealthy approach precluded him from such pleasantries. The show was starting, and there was scant time left for anything that wasn't purposeful to the task at hand. Even within his own party, they'd noticed it, and each had loosed their own contribution to taking the monster down.

From the canopy above, he lingered like a phantom - a silent wraith draped in shadows cast by the skeletal limbs of autumn-stripped trees. A chill had settled over the forest, biting through the air, sharpened by the faint stench of rot which crept up from below. His eyes had traced the creature's movements as the Frontlines loosed their initial barrage, knowing it wasn’t quite an animal anymore. Its movements were jerky, laced with a wrongness that clashed against the natural rhythms of the forest.

The bear - or what was left of it - ambled forward, its hulking frame twisted, plagued by crystalline growths that burst through matted fur, their cumulative form constituting a jagged mosaic which refracted whatever meager light could find it. Its eyes, perhaps once piercing and intelligent, were clouded and vacant, any light replaced by the eerie glow of parasitic life spreading inside it. It moved in unnatural bursts, its breathing a rattling wheeze as the foulness of rot drifted from its mouth.

Bahr didn’t hesitate. He dropped from the branch, his body a streak of red and black, falling silently through the chilled autumn air. For a fraction of a second, he was suspended above the creature, his eyes locked onto the blackened fur and mottled minerals along the neck. The blade of Forgotten King's Spite glinted, catching the scant light that filtered through the thinning trees.

Then, with a fluid, practiced motion, he brought the edge down across its throat.

The steel parted flesh and crystal growth alike, sliding through the corrupted veins of the creature with deadly precision. He landed in a crouch just beneath the hulking mass, jump-rolling away almost the moment he landed to avoid an oversize paw which clambered down onto that position only a moment later. A twist brought his perspective right with his team, where he paused and held his ground. Every muscle tense, watching and waiting for the creature’s next move.

CallistoHPBarTemplate1.pngPlayer after player charged at him. He weathered most blows without a reaction, nervous system gone offline. To what little strikes he did face with consequence, there had been an inhumane, guttural sound, both from the pestilence that churned from within him, festering a faster decay, and a blank stare snapped the player's way. It had been this way for each party's rally, a slow pressure rising as its anger was starting to build.

Near the end, just as the last attacker was peeling away, Callisto was compelled to make a move. He shifted onto its hind legs, hunched over, eyes captured towards the murky skies above, buffeting escapees nearby. Was that sniffling a cry to the stars? As it roared, the ground stirred beneath it, sewage pools vibrating to the echo of that haunted ursine. For a moment, it seemed as though the clouds would break to reveal a sky completely awash in white. But it hadn’t, and the dead don’t carry feelings. Once it got back on its front paws, the game was once again afoot.

Despite the fact that it was a rather large bear, and wasn’t meant to be incredibly agile, Cardinal puppeteered it as though it was but an action figure to a child. Callisto had gone, in its rampage, from corner to corner of the basin, rushing towards this party’s direction in the last. Though he hadn’t a specific target beyond the man who’d played that song for him — the one sense he knew how to take advantage of — Callisto stopped short, not having felt that impact against its mark. Why?

The fact that it felt the wall’s ascensions first made it spit and growl as it turned around. Where was it? Callisto took off in one direction, towards where the players had been, hoping he’d run into the musician first. But it was his limited stamina that got him to still. The dead didn’t have that much energy in them.

So the bear would slouch, and bide his time, and wait.

The Guardian breathed a sigh of relief as her party escaped the first attack unscathed. The creature clearly possessed enormous strength and power, and the Frontliners would do well to respect it. So to avoid taking damage in the first rotation was a true miracle. Lessa flashed Jomei a grin, then winked, and said, "Guess you're not half bad at this tanking gig, huh?"

Her gaze flicked across the other parties, curious how well they fared, and her blood froze in her veins. She watched Callisto give Alkor's body a shake, her oldest friend clamped tightly between the beast's rotting jaws. Lessa felt her own chest constrict, as surely as if she herself were being chomped on. "Nooo," came her soft exhalation, but it came out more like a strangled garble. Her hand tightened around the hilt of her sword, and blind panic pressed in on all sides. She teetered on the edge, prepared to give in, and let her body move of its own accord. She would throw herself at the bear, blade gleaming, and... and...

Probably die in the process.

Control yourself, a distant part of her chided. Alkor's fine - look at his health bar. He's not dead. It's not like last time.

It's not like last time.

Her grip on her sword loosened.

Instead, she leaned into her rationale side, summoning her HUD with her empty hand. She withdrew a mass healing crystal, then jogged closer to Alkor's party. The urge to touch him swamped her, and though she wanted desperately to assure herself that he was still alive, still whole, Alkor didn't appreciate physical contact on a good day. In the middle of a boss raid, after yeeting himself from a bear's mouth, probably wasn't any better a time for touchy-feelies. So she tore her eyes from him and focused on his healer.

"Here, Astralin," she called out, lobbing the crystal toward the young woman. "Keep an extra, just in case." Then, softer, she added, "Please."

Once her gift had been received, she returned to her waiting party, and gave them each a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "I'm going to boost your damage output this time," she informed them before hefting her sword into the air. She swung it in an arc, showering each player with blue sparks. "Let's not take any unnecessary risks."

Cordelia braced herself as she prepared for Callisto’s first attack in retaliation to the players, but her tense shoulders relaxed in confusion as she watched him charge into absolutely. Not even Jomei, who was still playing his silly little tunes, mind you, had managed to avoid an attack from the half-dead bear. She huffed, unsure if this meant that Callisto’s attacks would be devastating should they land at some point, but it was a thought she’d rather brush off for now in favor of actually attacking the damn thing. 

As soon as Callisto sat his fat ass back down, Cordelia went in for another attack. A burst of energy flowed through her, and as she felt it hum across her body, she channeled it into her sword. White hair billowed behind her in violent wisps as she activated her <<Charge>> skill, and she dashed back into the fray. The meat of her palm rested on the butt of her katana, propelling the blade forward while she twisted her body to an angle best for piercing the bear’s flesh. 

And pierce the flesh she did. Onimaru ripped right into Callisto’s side in a devastating attack. Wanting to make the most of such a useful skill, Cordelia pushed herself harder, twisting her wrist to drive the sword deeper. Only when she was content with her damage did she finally pull back, detaching her katana from the bear’s marred flesh with a satisfied grunt.

The sour note that shrieked from his violin as Callisto suddenly turned its eyes on Jomei and lunged forth may be in the running for the worst sound he had ever heard. His breath caught in his throat, the sudden reminder that HE WAS THE TANK. The days of being the quick moving DPS poking his rapier out from behind the safety of a heavily armored tank were gone. He was the first line of defense. The pit of fear suddenly burned away, as he was filled with purpose; Protect your comrades. 

The instant after Jomei's musical mishap, he fell back into step. The epic medley of strung notes that provided a back track to their battle suddenly became a waltz as Callisto raised its claws at Jomei. With steps like dance moves, Jomei's swift feet would keep him out of harms way. Ducking and bobbing, all while keeping the bear's attention with his music. As the boss exhausted its final attacks on the ginger, to no avail, Jomei found his opportunity. An opening in Callisto's defenses, as it retracted its massive, decaying claw back to the ground. Gliding his weapon across the surface of the violin, he would hold his fingers down on the strings to allow the chord to ring out. The rapier would continue forth and barely pierce the muscle of Callisto's shoulder. Not enough to deal any lasting damage, but that wasn't his goal.

After pulling his rapier back, he would raise a leg and deliver a quick kick into the diseased face of the bear to create some distance between it and his group. "What's wrong?" Jomei questioned, "Can't keep up?" Jomei's song would continue once more, waiting for the bear's next move.

the judder of a note. light. callisto the tainted rampages -- and arabelle is holding up her free hand, finding it covered in a blue-violet glow. very lovely. very useful. she nods, a smile softening her expression when the support player finishes explaining. lessa, her name is? she knows what [hyperactive] does but a little encouragement goes a long way. "i wish it stayed. thanks!"

“good hit.”

who is this? white hair, tainted sword. she had never seen this man in her life.

she suddenly does not care. an opening appears in front of her. as lessa calls out another buff, arabelle takes off, reckless, reignited. the strategic sense that remains in her urges her to activate a charge.

Nope, wrong. Incorrect. He'd made a bad play, and wasted his Vanish. He'd done it out of reflex, following his usual combat rotation, but he wasn't fighting alone anymore. It wouldn't be of the same benefit to him if he only refreshed a select few DoTs when the whole raid had their own as well. He had to be a team player. Pinball (begrudgingly) emerged from stealth, his expression sour and his blades in hand. He didn't run up to the boss. Too crowded. He hung back and flung a pair of knives into it for some more chip damage and retrieved another crytal -- this time a Perpetuate -- to hold aloft. The crystal played a mournful tune, but it had served its purpose. He dropped it and let the muck beneath them claim it. He'd be a team player; he'd keep up the entire raid's status effects for as long as he was able to before going for his normal strategy. Pinball pulled his hood up and stayed on the backline of the party, watching the fight go on from (relative) safety.

Bahr studied the beast's movements as it darted about, trying (but failing) to maul some poor fool who'd garnered its ire. It seemed that its eyesight was lacking, something that admittedly made the thing slightly less intimidating than it had been only moments prior. If Bahr could elude detection via its other senses, there was a good chance he could make it out of this encounter unscathed. And it would be the same for the rest of his comrades - hopefully they would make the same connection.

"Its senses are weak, dulled. Perhaps withered away altogether," he announced to the others once the bear's micro-rampage had ceased. For a brief moment, he allowed his eyes to wander, to connect with those in his party. But once those orbs found Lessa's, they were hurriedly redirected back to the task at hand. Distraction was weakness, and Bahr didn't quite trust himself to not get distracted with her around. Luckily, Pinball was there to emerge from the inky black beside him at just that very moment and steal the show.

A few knives flew toward the creature like darts, sinking silently into the monster's flesh without so much as a twitch to signify registry. Bahr squinted, leaning over toward Pinball so his voice could be heard over the rest of the commotion. "Too easy so far," he observed. "Seems weird, right?"

Pain for those who defied his rage, anguish for those who sought to end his wroth. He had nothing to give them beyond the only thing he knew. Singular, simple, madness. Some shook from the very sound of his howl, while others could feel their sanity fraying. If they intended to stay here, in this place that belonged to Him alone, then they would share his fate. 

They would drink deep of the dank death that had stolen His once beautiful home, occupied it down to the very water that once nourished him- now foul, unfit to slake even the slightest thirst. Whether or not they had played a part in the condemnation of this, his entire world, they were guilty by association.

Gone was the gentle beast far removed from society, replaced by a revenant.

As they railed against Callisto, the Players found themselves assailed by memory. The bog beneath their feet, displaced by every step, sloshing and filling the air with putrescence, sang a lament to time gone by. It wove the tapestry of not only the creature’s suffering, but that of the land itself. Wispy, incorporeal images of men ran past, disappearing into shadows just as quickly as they appeared.

Hunters, by the look of them. They ran down the denizens of the wood, taking as they needed, feeding their kin, cutting away at the forest. It was as the corrupted wood remembered- nothing of their kindness. Only the destructive, greedy, and direct nature of man existed to the souls that were interned in the Grove.

And they only played back the gruesome, morose, heart-wrenching tale for those who could tear their attentions away from Callisto long enough to pay them heed. Born perhaps of his maddening siren song, the images depicted death, deforestation, pollution- all things that had perhaps been unintended byproducts of something that no one had ever intended.

But Callisto would never forgive. He would never forget.

He continued to thrash, to flail, rip, and tear. The beast mauled and gnashed, enraged that he had been deprived of his intended victim.

But there would come plenty of other opportunities.

The beast's overgrown, rotten claws tore through the lot of them. Like an oncoming train, Jomei watched as Callisto's attack barreled towards him, after leaving the rest of his party in the monstrosity's wake. Barely a moment to react. The quickly falling health bars of his comrades in the corner of his eye dropped a pit into his stomach. How could it do so much damage to them, a single attack that hit all of them. His anxiety spiked with the severity of Callisto's bane, but he could not allow himself to falter. The second before the bear's claws made mincemeat of him, a blade rose to intercept. 

The defensive duelist struggled against the power of the massive beast of prey. Digging his boots into the dirt, he held his ground against Callisto, his rapier held straight up and down and other hand applying force towards the center of the blade. The razor claws of the bear still managed to pierce Jomei's side, but his quick parry had managed to avoid a much more possibly fatal hit. He winced as a rush of heat rushed into his body from the point of impact. His vision began to blur while a vortex of venomous thoughts filtered through his mind. But in an instant, it had vanished, all thanks to the antidote he had consumed earlier. Glancing over at his comrades, all recovering from that last strike, he only hoped they prepared in a similar fashion.

The claw dug deeper into his hip, and Jomei knew he needed to act or else he would lose his ground. Turning his back foot, the ginger would plant himself into the ground, the dirt and stone around his soles cracking in a web-like fashion. Using Callisto's own weight against him, Jomei would twist his blade and riposte the initial attack. A quick slash and he was free from under the might of the beast. It retreated and glared across at him and the others, planning its next strike.

A small exhale escaped him, as the panicked state died down and his health slowly recovered. The others were not nearly as lucky as he was, dropping  to under half their total health - if not, close to it. Was it Jomei's doing that caused this, or just their shite luck? Couldn't let that get to him, they were still depending on him to defend them all. He did not plan on letting them down.

Pulling a quick crystal from his pockets, he would raise it over his head and crush the object within his grasp. The green and blue energy that was released, gravitated towards each of the players to recover some of that lost health. "Safety is our top priority!" Jomei shouted to his group "We won't be taking this thing down if it takes us down first."

"Antidotes, refresh them if you need to. Looks like they're saving us from something extra from each hit."

"Less, Bahr. Use your healing crystals if you can! He hasn't been paying you two much attention, should be able to pop them off."

"I'm going to try and hit it with a sword art.. see if I can latch a debuff onto 'im. Anyone else attacking, follow my lead!" 

Raising his rapier, he would quickly close the distance between himself and Callisto. Thrusting forth with his momentum propelling the blade, the tip of the rapier plunged into the bear's rear thigh. Not as much damage as he was used to, but still helpful nonetheless. As the others followed suit and landed their own strikes, Jomei fell back into his position on the battlefield, serving as their ever dodging shield. Olive eyes looked at each of his party members, mostly strangers and his closest friend, checking to see how they were doing. Physically, of course, but mostly mentally.

the beast opens its emptied jaws. arabelle prises herself from her own violence at the last moment, and the air shakes with a tremendous howl. through no will of her own, her weaker hand races up to cover an ear and her balance tips sideways mid-evasion -- amaterasu is heavy enough for two hands, near impossible to hold with only one. an entire swath of green vanishes from her health bar.

40%: she is struck by the strange sensation that she was sent flying. that callisto had caught up to her with a swipe of its massive paw though all system mechanics dictated she would never have been a target and it had flicked her away like dust. but she had dug her heel into the ground, had she not? she shakes it off with a stack of an antidote, fixes her grip on her scythe and raises it over her head like an executioner's axe.

A blur replaced the scene before Bahr's eyes before Pinball would answer him, world turned upside-down from a side swipe delivered by one of the monster's oversized paws. As Bahr's health bar (and those of his teammates) swiftly ticked backward in response to the strike, it appeared Bahr's suspicions had been confirmed. This was the sort of raid where everything would be okay - until it wasn't. Bahr's airborne frame twisted and contorted as it spun furiously, making reaching into his pocket to retrieve a healing crystal difficult. Difficult, but not impossible. After some unflattering fumbling, he located the elusive gem and crushed it in his pocket, doing his part to revitalize both himself and his teammates. Bahr bore witness to the party's health bars starting their slow ascent back toward safety, then blackness.

His senses came back him slowly, and one at a time. The first to find its way back to him was his sense of sound. Everything was low, dull, and muffled at first. Pitch, tone, and clarity seeped into the mosaic of noises until it resembled something more coherent, but Bahr still found it difficult to parse much. Someone was shouting something. Lots of people, in fact, were shouting. That damnable beast was still rampaging about, its enormous appendages unleashing thunderous impacts which drowned out all other sound each time they struck something. Eventually he could feel the earth shaking in tempo with these booms, at first pin pricks against sleeping nerves which slowly grew into full fledged sensations. With time, even sight would come back, indecipherable fuzz into grayscale into full color. Now, if only he could fucking move.

Bingo.

After the first twitch, the NerveGear finally gave him clearance to operate his avatar again, and in a blink he'd kicked off from his entombment within the rubble and started closing the distance between himself and the boss. Normally he'd have some sort of quip prepared to deliver here, or at least a clumsy one-liner he could let tumble from his mouth on the fly. But his jaw still wasn't quite working right, and his tongue felt like a dry sponge, so he thought better of it and let his actions do the talking. As the space between himself and his grotesque abomination collapsed, he wound into as fast as spin as he could muster, punctuating the motion with a gleaming slash across the bear's throat across the same laceration he'd made earlier. He landed in the creature's view and quickly dashed to depart, making his way back toward the rest of his team.

A cursory glance at his HUD revealed that most of them were in good shape - although Arabelle's condition was concerning. "Everyone doing okay over here?" he asked as he arrived alongside Jomei, squinting into the chaos in search of familiar names. "Have you seen anyone since that AoE?"

The sight of a massive clawed paw was the last thing Cordelia saw before she was sent tumbling backward. As she landed, to say she was initially disgusted was the understatement of the century; bare skin made contact with the murky brown water that clumped together in thick puddles along the chamber’s floor, and even if it didn’t stain her skin and clothes, the mere knowledge that she was touching the corpse water was enough to nearly send her gagging. If that wasn’t enough, the close proximity immediately sent the stench straight to Cordelia’s face, invading her lungs like she had inhaled fire itself. 

“Shit.”

The assault on her five senses aside, Cordelia looked up to realize more than half of her health was just gone. Completely gone. If it hadn’t already, the remaining blood on her face drained, leaving a horrified, paled complexion. Looking at the rest of her party, she now noticed that aside from their tank, *everyone* had a significant chunk of their health missing. All of that was one attack? She called fucking bullshit. Cordelia gritted her teeth as she wobbled back to her feet, gripping her katana with a newfound ferocity. 

Already, her teammates were getting back to work, with both Jomei and Bahr popping a mass healing crystal that seemed to soothe her worries, albeit not that much. Seeing as her health would be covered for now, she dashed back into the battle. Immediately, she felt a difference. Whether it be from the fear and adrenaline coursing through her veins due to Callisto’s last attack or the fact that he had debuffed her, Cordelia’s movements felt sluggish, and the peripherals around her usually clear vision had blurred, like she was staring out a foggy window. However, she persevered through the struggle, drawing back her katana before lunging forward to deliver a horizontal slash to the bear.

The bear flew into a frenzy, hitting the entire party for absolutely massive amounts of damage. Pinball's heart skipped a beat as he watched his health drop to nearly a quarter of what it was -- and then he steadied himself. He couldn't afford to freak out. It was a good thing he couldn't remember the last time that he did freak out. Pinball swiped his inventory open with haste -- Jomei and Bahr were quick with the crystals, and he knew Lessa probably wasn't going to let the AOE slide without healing them back up too. That gave him the time that he needed to redo his antidote. Pinball chugged it as fast as he possibly could and tossed the empty bottle aside. His Vanish was just about ready. Members of the other parties were taking care of the Perpetuates. He had time. Pinball analyzed the situation as best he could and hung back, still, waiting for his opportunity to attack.
