[F1-SP] Shiny! <<Earning a Living: Artisan>>

Recommended Posts

"Hey! I've got everything," Oats called out to Kali as she waded through the water towards the grassy ledge above the creek's edge. Kali ran over, exclaiming, "That's great! I double-checked the perimeter, and it looks like we're clear. No monsters or PKers, thankfully. PKers really scare me. We should reach the town without any trouble!" He grinned at Oats after speaking.

"Excellent. Let's not waste any more time here. Come on," Oats said, stepping onto the ledge. Unfortunately, it was too weak to hold her weight and collapsed. She yelped, flailing her arms in a futile attempt to grasp something, and landed in the cool water on her backside, now half-soaked. She lifted her hands to shake off the water. Kali blinked, then burst into laughter. Oats, mirroring his laughter sarcastically, told him to cut it out and help her up. Kali obliged, leaning in to offer a hand. Too naive. As soon as Oats grabbed his hand, she pulled until he toppled into the water beside her.

"Now we're even," Oats declared. "Okay, okay, that's fair," Kali conceded, locking eyes with Oats as she returned his gaze. After a few seconds, both burst into laughter.

Together, they walked towards the town, their clothes heavy with water, dripping with each step. Their footsteps emitted an unpleasant squeak and squelch. As they stepped onto the town's stone tiles, the sounds grew worse. The heads of nearby players turned towards the loud slapping noise coming from the soles of their shoes. Unfazed, Oats continued on to the Artisan shop to complete her task. Kali, however, blushed and avoided the stares of the onlookers.

A bell rang as Oats opened the door to the Artisan's shop. The shopkeeper glanced up to notice Oats and Kali behind her. "Hello! Have you found the materials yet?" He seemed oblivious to the puddle they were creating, which was typical of an NPC, not programmed to react to situations outside their script. "Yes, I have. Here they are," Oats replied, swiping, sliding, and clicking until five materials transferred to the Artisan through the trade window. He accepted them gratefully, but instead of closing the window, he offered a few items in return. Her interface pinged with new information: one brown Artisan shirt and one pair of brown Artisan pants. Oats quickly swapped into the dry clothes, she did it directly to ensure her privacy during the process. She had never been so relieved to be in fresh attire. As the Artisan turned away, Oats asked for an extra set, which he handed over without a thought. She then presented it to Kali, unwilling to leave him in his sorry drenched condition.

When the young grey haired short beard guy of an Artisan looked up and down at both of us in the clothing he gave us, he exclaimed, "Ah, excellent!" He clasped his hands, "So, you've decided to dabble in the arts of crafting, have you? My name is Malachi Ringly, but you may call me the master." Oats and Kali looked at each other perplexedly. "Let's see what you've brought me, and hopefully, it's not just a collection of rocks." He peered at materials spreaded out on the table closely, "Look like they're in great quality. Alright, let's make something fabulous- or at the very least, something that won't fall apart in two seconds."

Malachi hands now cradling shards of materials which he transported to a table laden with tools and hammers. "Let's forge something that can actually be useful- like a simple trinket or a piece of jewelry to impress that special someone, or at least make them laugh.", he shrugged. "On a second thought, you're novice, so let do a trinket for now." Oats took up a hammer and started banging on the craft as the game doesn't require specific proceedings for it, like using furnace, etc. Kali peered over her shoulder.

Malachi leaped from a stool to stand beside Oats, seizing the crafted item and hoisting it before the small window where sunlight streamed in. He rotated it, scrutinizing every angle. "It's... It's... MAJESTIC!!!" he proclaimed, arms thrust skyward in victory, while Oats and Kali looked on, eyes wide. Seizing Oats' arms, he declared, "You've FINALLY done it, my pupil!" 'Finally?' Did he mean to praise or insult her? His neutral demeanor gave nothing away. Yet, she found it amusing, akin to an NPC with a scripted set of lines or actions triggered by a student's success. She thought the developers deserved kudos for such lifelike reactions.

"As an artisan, you will have to give your craft a name and description. What would it be?" He said as he sent the rare item, a charm, to Oats' inventory. She opened it and saw its information is blank. Readying for her customization.

"Hmm... the Emerald Lily. With LD 1 and QUA 1. The description would be a stunning green gemstone shaped like a blooming lily, radiating tranquility and enhancing intuition for its wearer."

"Now make it so." He gestured to an option where she could fill in the blank.

"I mean it's clearly the work of a novice," Malachi observed, "but it'll do. Congratulations. You're now your own master. A master can own a shop." He pats on Oats' shoulder. "Thanks... master?"

"Hey, congrats! My dad always used to tell me, 'Hard work pays off greatly.' You certainly deserve it!" Kali punched Oats' arm. "You know what? When you set up a shop, I'll be sure to visit!"

"You'd better buy something when you do," Oats pointed out.

"You got it! Only if I have cash, though. I'm usually broke," he shrugged with dismay as he walked out the door with Oats.
