The fires of Floor 9 were not welcoming this time around. Wulfrin had only been through this literal hellscape a couple of times at this point. He had toppled an entire bandit camp and even helped a crew of frontliners farm the field boss here for the raid. Now that he had some down time, he figured it would be in his best interest to start working towards creating a stockpile of items to increase his ever-growing toolkit. In this case the Phoenix needed to be slain once more to ensure he always had at least one Hellstorm on hand as it could help him lesson the risks that his newly acquired Sharkbait Training Program brought a long.

"Let's get this party started," Wulfrin sighed as he exited the gates of Yogan Village. His usual kit disolved into his inventory leaving him with just a sword, a couple of rings, and a simple shirt and pants.

"You're really going through with this?" Konteris questioned as he materialized next to Wulfrin. "You're going to take on a Field Boss with no armor?"

"Relax dude," Wulfrin chuckled back. "Even with my stats reduced I can take a beating from the thing. I took a literal feast before coming here. Might as well maximize my looting potential."

Wulfrin arrived at the Phoenix's nest in record time. There sleeping peacefully in the distance he could see the majestic fire bird. Wulfrin slowly drew his platinum sword as he readied for combat. The beast roared at his approach and took to the skies. Wulfrin was the first to act, his blade becoming engulfed in an emerald light. While the bird was more flames than scales, Wulfrin's Scale Breaker sword art was till a nasty piece of work. The singular heavy blow was usually enough to not just send enemies staggering backwards, but also put a sizeable dent in their armor.

What Wulfrin wasn't ready for was the rebuttal. Usually his arts were paired with Icingdeath, his main weapon. Today he did not bring that blade nor his trusty armor. Today was an exercise in how far he had come without his reliance on his gear. This meant the beast had zero chance of becoming incapacitated. As Wulfrin recovered from his sword art, the Phoenix slammed its body directly into his own. Wulfrin watched as his HP dipped a bit before stopping.

"That wasn't so bad," Wulfrin chuckled. "Solaris! Engage!"

Wulfrin couldn't have been proven more wrong. He pressed his attack taking smaller, less damaging, strikes where he could. Finally he found another opening that allowed him to charge up another Scale Breaker. Like before, the Phoenix shivered and quaked from the impact. As Wulfrin was recovering the giant inferno of a bird took to the skies out of reach and flapped its wings downward, unleashing an unbearable wave of heat across the battlefield. Wulfrin was toppled from his feet as a significant chunk of his health bar faded. He was in the yellow. It was a dangerous zone to be in, even more so when that bar literally measured your own life force. Instinctively Wulfrin checked his pocket. The teleport crystal was still there, so at least he had an escape route. His HP continued to drop as his clothing was set ablaze.

"We got this," Wulfrin tried to encourage himself. "We're doing great."

Wulfrin did not in fact have this. It was quite the opposite. The phoenix nosedived right for him in an attempt to take out the unprepared swordsman with one final blow. Wulfrin's eyes narrowed and with calculated precision, he sidestepped out of the way just in time. His blade was charged with another Scale Breaker that swiftly found it's mark in the giant flaming chicken's back. The Phoenix craned its neck around in swift order jabbing it's superheated beak into Wulfrin's right flank. Wulfrin slid to a stop a few feet away prone on the ground as the phoenix unleashed yet another torrent of Hellfire. Wulfrin's HP stopped just short of zero.

"Okay," Wulfrin groaned as he struggled to his feet. "Maybe I made a small misstep in coming here."

His eyes drifted to the HP gauge of his foe. It wasn't doing much better than he was. Wulfrin's hand gripped the teleport crystal in his free hand as he contemplated his next move.

"I only have one shot at this," Wulfrin gasped for air as his body was on the verge of failing. "If I can stun it here, that will trigger it's rebirth. After that I just have to hope it doesn't pop another of those infernos."

It was a sound plan. He had managed to get a max stack going of Scale Breaker meaning its armor was as low as it was going to go. If Wulfrin was lucky then that meant it had no more armor to chew through. If he wasn't well let's just say he would likely be finding a one way ticket to the afterlife. With gritted teeth, he charged forward, his blade glowing a crimson red as Wulfrin executed an aerial strike aiming straight for the beast's center of mass. The heavy impact echoed through the caldera as Wulfrin found his feet firmly planted back on the molten ground. He braced as the phoenix burst forth from it's crumbling ashes with a renewed vigor. It still staggered and stumbled leaving Wulfrin his last chance at killing this beast. Fitting that its doom would be initiated by a Sword Art named after it, Phoenix Talon.

Wulfrin's blade began to glow a cerulean light as he took an offensive stance towards the flailing bird. As he exhaled, his breath was accompanied by a misty trail. Despite the unbearably hot temperature of Floor 9, the area around Wulfrin began to ice over. His eyes shifted to a stark icy blue and the whites of his eyes darkened to near black. The first ability to trigger was <<Charge>> as Wulfrin prepared to put everything he had behind the attack. As he grew close, he brought his blade down upon the helpless form of The Phoenix.

"Sword Skill:" Wulfrin's voice echoed through the rapidly cooling caldera. "Ice Devil's Rage."

With a calm, collected, and focused series of attacks, the Phoenix began to get juggled in the air as blow after blow removed chunks of its reformed health bar. After a few moments Wulfrin returned to the ground amongst the scattering lights of the now fractured field boss. His target felled, Wulfrin collapsed onto his back. His energy reserves were drained. His Health was basically zero. His body was constantly tingling with the effects of the pain absorbers.

Wulfrin lay staring at the floor above him. He was tapped more than any of his other encounters. He panted heavily as he contemplated his poor life choices. In hindsight, he probably shouldn't have gone after a field boss with such reckless abandon, but he couldn't deny the amount of satisfaction he had for felling such a beast with such a severe handicap. He rolled himself up to a sitting position as he mulled over the dropped items. There was the bottle of Hellstorm, the expected and guaranteed drop of his foe. A few other items stood out as great import. he found a decent chuck of col and mats as well as a demonic shard.

"At least the grinding kit is doing it's job," Wulfrin sighed as he dismissed the info box. "Now I just gotta grind at my actual level so I can collect gear. I can't rely on the stuff Freyd gifted me forever. I'm sure he wants his armor back."

"Baby steps kid," Konteris said with a smirk, holding out a hand to help Wulfrin to his feet. "Focus on improving yourself for the raid. You signed up to be a striker, so you need to keep your mind focused on the task at hand."

"Relax shadow man," Wulfrin scoffed as he returned to standing. "We're as prepped as we can be for the raid. Time to focus on something else, taking steps to claim my next Tech art."

It took a bit to make it to Knorilt Village. Mount Hellion was a steep climb, but at the very least it was a good workout. His survival skill was working overtime, as even through its protective effects the heat was palpable. When Wulfrin crossed through the gates, he was pleasantly surprised to find a city of Dwarves. The streets were littered with signs for various tavern, smithing, mining, and jewelry crafters. Wulfrin felt oddly at home as the sounds of metal being worked rang through the air like an orchestrated bell choir.

Wulfrin picked one of the busier taverns to try his luck at info gathering. The information regarding the Cerberus quests stopped at the arrival to Knorilt, so he'd have to do some digging. Wulfrin's eyes scanned the room, looking for anyone that might now a thing or two about where to find the den. To his luck another non-dwarf sat at the bar in tattered clothes and wrapped head to toe in bandages.

"Excuse me," Wulfrin spoke up as he sat in the vacant seat next to the injured player. "Mind if I sit?"

"Go ahead," The player said. They weren't geared in any meaningful way, but Wulfrin could tell they had something to spill.

"I'm here looking for a quest. I'm attempting to hunt a three headed dog, apparently it's needed for a sword art."

"You mean Cerberus?"

"That'd be the one."

"No offense dude, but you don't exactly look like the adventuring type. That beast will chew you up and spit you out."

"I think I can handle it. I just finished smacking the field boss around. He can't be too much harder right?"

"I suppose not." The player took a drink from the flagon they were nursing. "Cerberus is located south of here, across the Volcanic Flats. Survival skill is highly recommended to stave off the environmental effects."

"Cool thanks."

"Now for payment. No info is free."

"I mean the quest is literally public knowledge all you're doing is gatekeeping it. Give me something not tied to that quest and I'll think about it."

"Fine. Rumor has it Cerbie guards the entrance to some hidden zone. No one's ever looked, as most leave it be after slapping ol' yeller around."

"See that's more like it." Wulfrin smirked as he placed a sack of col on the counter for the broker. "Ciao."

The name of the game was travel, and travel Wulfrin did. He had dressed for the occasion, a fact he was grateful for, as the flatlands were even hotter than the volcano. This was mainly due to the ever shifting landscape created by the molten rock on the floor's surface. The terrain, hot as it may be, was at least extremely easy to traverse. Wulfrin kept himself pointed south towards the edge of the floor. From what the broker was saying, it seemed that Cerberus was likely in the mountain range border of the floor. The higher up in the floors he went the more elaborate the borders became. Why they were simple guardrails on floor one, Wulfrin hadn't been able to figure out. Perhaps their sadistic captor had deliberately made them that way knowing people would test the truth he had presented.

"Oddly enough," Wulfrin smirked as he walked the scorching hot flatlands. "Reminds me of home."

"A volcanic field reminds you of home?" Konteris said in his mind.

"Not literally. Just the extremely hot and extremely flat topography. I guess it really isn't that close. I'm just being dumb again."

As the journey continued, Wulfrin found his mind beginning to wander. Cerberus was classically known as the Gatekeeper of Hell. Wulfrin's mind began it's over analytical processes. If this game was going to pull from other mythologies, a detail he had noticed multiple times during his travels, then it stood to reason that this special region that Cerberus guarded was likely to be hell themed. The idea of exploring uncharted territory excited him to the point that Wulfrin picked up his pace a bit.

"What do you think Cerberus is guarding?" Wulfrin asked to the ether. "You think there are any col or interesting items there?"

"If there are it sounds like you'll be getting first dibs."

"That would be ideal yes, but I'm thinking I may have to come back another day when I'm not nerfed for a field boss."

"Probably with your proper gear too."

"Maybe, but I'm hoping I can earn enough a boost in the raid that I can continue to grind without it. If I can help it, I'd like to continue grinding as much as possible."

The lone and casually dressed swordsman was nearing his destination. The molten crag of the terrain was beginning to give way to large spires of obsidian, lava poured from the mountainous peaks like water. The rivers of molten rock twisted and coiled before colling and shifting the river's path. Solaris seemed to be right at home though. Wulfrin's body was beginning to get winded, but that was mainly due to adventuring strain. The heat was still being kept at nay by his Survival skill. How this could be comparable to a desert sandstorm?

Wulfrin heard a loud roar form the nearby spires. At the edge of the sulfurous fog, Wulfrin could see large wrought iron chains hanging form the floor above him. They had to be massive if they were noticeable from this distance. Wulfrin's best assumption was that they were to serve as his waypoint. As he pressed further towards the mountain range. As he closed in, he drew his blade in preparation for whatever would charge at him.

Wulfrin approached the boss arena with caution. Sure enough there was the big boy himself curled up in front of a massive double door gate of the same wrought iron as the chains that connected it to the floor above. The downside was Cerberus was not alone. There were, by Wulfrin's count three other mobs orbiting their boss like guard dogs. An apt title as they appeared to be some kind of an infernal great dane, likely hellhounds. This was quickly confirmed when one came close enough for Wulfrin to see it's name.

As Wulfrin stepped forward, making his presence known, the hellhounds howled in unison, waking their slumbering master. Three health bars surged to life over Cerberus's head as it prepared to howl in response.

It didn't even get to whimper. Wulfrin was already in motion, blade alight with his AoE stun. He quickly discovered he had come way overprepared as each of Cerberus's heads hit the ground, along with one of his spawn, and shattered almost instantly. The last two Hellhounds tried to get revenge but quickly found their attempts to be in vain.

Wulfrin pivoted and turned his attention to the remaining two mobs. He was making exceptional pace this go round, and soon would be crossing the threshold of the gate. This version of Cerberus was merely a stepping stone, as Wulfrin had found out that you have to rematch the Infernal Guardian for the Sword Art to drop. No matter, at least he could get a peak in before returning in full force. His blade hummed to life again as he executed another sweeping AoE attack. Two more showers of fractal data particles exploded from his now downed foes. A few seconds later, a pop up apeared signaling the completion of the quest.

"Cerberus was significantly easier than the Phoenix." Wulfrin noted. "But if my assumptions are correct, the rematch is way more difficult. I can't use Icingdeath in it, as it would just be a waste."

"Then consider this a warm-up."

"We really need to work on your jokes."

"I wasn't joking."

"Alright, no need to get hot and bothered."

Konteris only face palmed.

Wulfrin turned his attention to the massive gate before him. It was definitely infernal in make, so he was leaning more and more towards his suspicions being correct. From what he could tell there was no obvious way to open the two massive doors, save the giant knockers way too far out of reach.

"Who forged this thing?" Wulfrin asked quizzically. "Fucking Fire Giants?"

"Wouldn't be too far out of the question." Konteris added. "Though none of my people have ever hear players mention them even existing."

"Yeah, but your kind is kind of floor locked so your data is limited."

"True."

Wulfrin watched as his gemini emerged from the shadows of the boss arena. Having a separate pair of functioning eyes was always helpful.

"Take a look here. There's a socket here at the right height for a player to access. Whatever fits in it is missing though."

"Let me take a look."

 Wulfrin examined the open socket. Sure enough it was about shoulder height and smooth. The indent was roughly the size of a basket ball. scanning the chamber, Wulfrin noticed that Cerberus's body hadn't shattered. Around the neck of the middle head, was a collar. Imbedded in which was a jewel roughly the same size. Wulfrin lucked the gem and pressed it into the gate. Slowly it began to open and the sounds of an ongoing war echoed around him.

The duo stepped across the threshold, and immediately the heat became more intense. They had entered a sprawling plain of cinders and brimstone, caked in black ichor and bodies of fiendish creatures of both demonic and devilish origin. Immediately Wulfrin's mind cliqued as to what world he had just entered. This wasn't your typical Donte's Inferno scenario, but a massive war between the evil forces of both chaos and law.

"The Blood War." Wulfrin muttered as he over looked the sprawling battlefield before him.

"You're familiar?"

"Unfortunately. It also means we can't stay long. The deeper we go the tougher things will get."

"You think there is any hope of finding anything here."

"If I had to guess..." Wulfrin pointed across the wasteland towards a marbled citadel, an unnaturally angelic structure in the otherwise war-torn landscape. "That is likely the dungeon. Won't be easy to get to, but likely holds the treasures here."

Wulfrin's hair stood on end. In a split second, their conversation interrupted by a pack of four devilish soldiers. They had no armor, but carried silvered weapons. In a quick motion Wulfrin intercepted them with his AoE stun. He had to buy himself some time. He also needed to keep up momentum as form the look of his assailants they were likely scouts. Wulfrin glanced back to the now open gate behind him and realized why Cerberus was placed where he was. It wasn't to keep players out, it was to keep this war in.

"We can't let them cross the gate." Wulfrin planted himself between the gate and the group of mobs.

"I'm noncombative," Konteris sighed. "Solaris and I can make sure there aren't any stragglers."

"Go. I got this."

The gemini and the phoenix both took off in different directions, leaving Wulfrin to hold the line alone. The stun began to wear off of his enemies, as he prepared for another round of strikes. Judging by the health bars, these mobs were gunna be two hit kills at least.

The group of devilish soldiers closed in. Of course this was as Wulfrin intended. Like moths to a flame, they surrounded Wulfrin, their blades and spears armed to strike. Wulfrin was faster. Much like the champion of the Floor 24 Coliseum that he had bested, Wulfrin drew his invisible circle, marking his territory. Typically this motion was a traditional samurai technique, but lacking a katana, Wulfrin's longsword would have to do. Funny things like that happen playing a Japanese game. Four precisely timed strikes went out as each soldier attempted to encroach his realm of influence. Honestly it was bad tactical decision on their part considering how hard Wulfrin had hit them before. Mindless NPC mobs rarely had any sense.

"Alright that's one wave bested." Wulfrin sighed as the confetti of data settled around him. "Time to wait for my own scouts. We can't stay here forever though. soon as I have an opening, I'm taking it."

"Another wave incoming," Konteris announced as he and Solaris returned to Wulfrin's side. "If you can take these out quickly, you should be good to leave."

"Fantastic news." Wulfrin chuckled. "I'll fell this wave and then we bounce. I think we've over stayed our welcome."

As promised four more devilish scouts, Hellriders they seemed to be called, emerged surrounding Wulfrin again. This time though, he focused his mind ant manifested three shades to assist him. These were of course near identical copies of himself, though attire wise they wore his Fallen Angel Garb. One strike from each was all that was needed to stop the assaulting forced dead in their tracks, Wulfrin making full use of his AoE stun abilities. The downside was energy drain. AoE attacks were always heavy hits to the energy pool, but adding the mental strain of shadow jumping between his shades for mobility just made it worse. The fact he was locked to a lower level was not helping his situation any.

The soldiers recovered from their stunned state. They continued to enclose on Wulfrin's position. This time Wulfrin let them get close enough that he didn't need to rely on his custom skill for mobility. He wasted no time raking his sword across the form of each devilish hellrider, causing a cascade of fractal data motes to fall around him. He glanced behind him to double check the gate was still open. As far as he could tell it wasn't making an effort to close on its own so he would likely have to enact the motion himself.

"Through the gate!" Wulfrin called to no one but his familiar.

Wulfrin fell back across the threshold of the gate and made his way to the gem. It was still lodged in its socket and with a heavy tug, Wulfrin dislodged it. The doors fell closed with a thud, causing sulfuric dust to cloud the area. After a coughing fit, Wulfrin regained his composure before starting his own internal debrief.

"Well that was fun," Wulfrin chuckled as he started his trip back to the warp gate. "Definitely Hell beyond that gate though."

"I'd say so," Konteris agreed inside Wulfrin's head. "Though I'm not to keen on wading through two opposing factions for a dungeon."

"That just means the loot will be that much better. Besides Cerberus doesn't seem to respawn that quick, so we should be able to go in at full. Assuming I come straight here."

"I suspect the Cerberus rematch will be slightly more difficult than this one was."

"I'm fully aware. That's why I had a special armor commissioned. Cerberus will be easy prey."

The rest of the trip was spent in silent contemplation. Plans were being laid for a assault on what Wulfrin had deemed The Bleeding Citadel. His mind drifted to the armor he had stored in his closet at home, the Phoenix Memoir. It was designed specifically to handle the harsh fires of Floor 9 and beyond, since it was a fusion from back when he first started adventuring. It was super situational, but this was likely to be the only time it would ever see use.
