Turn 3

Ares-49789 Turn

Ares clenched his teeth when the attack connected against his side, he had been careless once again, thanks to his armor it had barely done any damage, but it had still hurt and he was pissed, that beast had managed to land a good hit against him and he was not in the mood to let it go unscathed, not that he was planning to do so, after all, he was there to kill three boarlets and that one was the last one he needed to get back to the blacksmith and finally finish his mission, it really was feeling as if he had been doing it for days. Ares cleared his throat and launched his last attack, he was going to dispose of the boarlet and end what he had been doing for far too much time, he wanted to get back to the city and get his reward, buy a weapon, because his was just a loaned one, and maybe even a shield if he was lucky enough

Ares went back into the town, he had done what the smith had told him to. He better give him what was owed to the mayor, he didn't have anything else to do, so he wasn't in a hurry on that aspect. He did want to keep doing missions so he could level up as fast as possible to go to the front lines, there was people fighting to get out of the death game, the least thing he could do was to hurry up and do the same. Ares clenched his teeth as he looked at the mace in his hand, the smith had been kind enough to give him the weapon he needed to fight against the boars, even if it was him who had sent him to fight in the first place, maybe he wasn't that bad, you know, just the typical old man with issues too long lived to be resolved, his grandfather had also been like that, a little grumpy some times but with the best stories to tell he had ever heard

"i'm back Lyle" He said as he walked into the blacksmith's shop, the dim light barely being enough to see things more than a few feet away until his eyes got used to the lighting and he found the man standing there with his hammer on its zenith, it seemed like the blacksmith had stopped just when he said his name

"Do you have the tusks?" Said the man, leaving the hammer on the anvil and getting the now sword-shaped piece of steel in the forge, Ares took out the tusks and showed them to the man, who took them as he nodded "I use these for hilts" He explained

"What about the loan from Dorian?" He asked, the man simply shrugged and let out a sound laugh

"Now, I'll have you know that I don't take loans from anyone, especially men the likes of Dorian White. You might try old Pete Larkin. He spends all his time fishing for river monsters or some such nonsense." said before adding with a scoff, "Without a real job, the man could probably use the charity." Ares watched as the old man turned back to his shop

"What do I do with the mace then?"

"Just take it, i have no need for trash like that, why do you think it was in a pile far away from the real merch?" Well, Ares was not the one to say no to a gift, so he just nodded and left, it wasn't as if the man cared for a decent goodbye

Now he was there once again, in the streets of the town of beginnings and looking for an NPC he didn't even know where he was. Ares sighed, the blacksmith had given him little to no clue, at least he knew that Pete was a fisherman. That left another question to answer. Where would he find a fisherman in a town as big as the one he was in. His mind lit up with a light bulb as he thought of the answer, docks, if he wanted to find a fisherman a dock was the place he had to go to find him. Good, now, Where were they?

Well, it wasn't that hard to find out, he just had to find a kind enough NPC and ask for the docks, which resulted to be nearer than he had initially thought. It seemed like the town had a fresh water lake just by its walls, so people used to go fishing there. And there they were, the docks, and just at the end of them and in a boat, a man with long beard, he looked like Zack and Lyle, maybe they were related on some way? It was not the moment for that kind of questions

"Excuse me, I am looking for a man called Pete Larking, would you know where I could find him?" Said Ares, approaching the man at the end of the docks as he tied his boat full of traps that still looked wet

"Aye lad, take this" Said the man, giving him a rope that was tied to the back of the boat "Tie it" Ares had never made a sailor's knot, still when he finished he couldn't help to ask himself why he was just helping the random man

"So..." Ares asked as he scratched the back of his head "Do you know Pete Larking or not?" He asked, the man just laughed

"You asking if i know the lad? Aye, I know 'im al'ight, tis me" Ares just looked at the man and sighed, yup, he fit the bill for what he had been told by Lyle

Ares let out a sigh as he looked at the man

"Then you must know that you have loaned some money from the mayor Dorian" Said Ares as he looked at the fisherman as he scavenged for gold on the mines in his face, the man nodded "Well, he wants you to pay him back" Pete didn't take more than a second before losing a deep belly- laugh

"Yer tellin' me Mayor Dorian's taken to sending players to do his dirty work? Fine, fine, he’ll get his money, as soon as ye help me finish pulling it out of the drink!” Great, another old man who wanted him to do something he had never done before, but at least it seemed like he was the one who owed the mayor money and he would be able to give it back to him after doing the next task

"Alright" He said "What do I have to do?" Pete heard that and pointed back to his boat, Ares saw the glimpses of different metals, it seemed like the fisherman hadn't only fished for crab during that day's working time, Ares couldn't help but whistle "Then All i have to do is get the things out of your boat and then... you'll give me the money you owe?"

"Aye lad, but only if you do it good enough" Ares sighed, at least the man looked like he was kind

"Then let me get started" He said, Pete stepped down and sat on one of the docks poles, looking at Ares getting on the boat

He was no Sailor, that was something he didn't even doubt, he was more of a mountain guy, his father had taken him on hunting trips more times than he could count. More than those he had gone as a journeyman to harvest the olives back at home, he had also been to France once to help his father and some of his friends in the vintage up north, that had earned him quite some money he was still yet to spend on its totality, although knowing himself he'd only spend it in books or something, maybe even some months on the gym

Maybe if he hadn't been born in a land locked town, he'd have done some fishing, his grandfather had done some. But that was just because he had been born in a city with a port in the time of the dictatorship and that meant that people used to do fishing for a living. Anyway, to the task at hand, Ares started looking around the webs and traps, looking for whatever was valuable enough to be worth his or the fisherman's time

Ares whistled as he found a chest among the traps and webs, the young man grabbed it by the handles at its sides and trying to not lose his balance, raised it into the air and stepped down from the boat, almost losing a tooth or two because of almost tripping with the edge of the dock, yeah, the boat was waving way too much, even if they were in a lake, luckily he was able to regain his balance in time and didn't fall. Ares deposited the chest on the dock and looked back at the fisherman

"Is this what you wanted me to take out?" He asked the fisherman as he looked back at the chest, it was a treasure chest alright, just maybe not as clean as he'd have expected one of those to be. The wood was pretty much rotten and more than one barnacle had made it's home in the chest's surface, the fisherman just smiled, he was missing some teeth. Maybe the reason was the same more than one of the remaining ones were as black as the night back home. That was bad, the man needed to visit a dentist soon, that was, if dentists did exist in the digital floating castle

"Aye lad, 'tis just what I needed" Said the man, Ares sighted

"Then what about the money you owe to the mayor?" Asked the young man, Pete just let out another one of his belly laughs, Ares did think of his grandfather when he was telling stories to him and his cousins and siblings, he had always looked as happy as the man did right now, the difference being that his grandfather used to have a beer on his hand when he told his stories. Maybe they weren't all was he had been told, maybe the alcohol coursing through his grandfather's veins had helped making them better

"Nay lad, you still have something else to do" Pete said, earning an eyebrow raise from Ares "Gotta open the thing don't ye think?" Said the man, Ares turned around and walked to the Chest, alright, if the man wanted him to open it, he wouldn't be the one to disappoint him

"Not a bad catch ain't it?" Said the fisherman as Ares took the things out of the chest

"Yeah, it's a good catch" Said Ares as he handed over the hull to the fisherman, who just extended his hand and shook his head

"Nay lad, take the treasure" He said, Ares looked at the objects on his arms and then at the man

"Why?" With Zackariah he had gone looking for materials and he could understand being rewarded for it, with Lyle he had fought for the tusks with the weapon he had given him, even then he had earned said weapon as a trade for the tusks, what he could not understand was why would the fisherman just hand over the treasure he himself had caught to him, he was just a rando who had come to retrieve some money he had been loaned by the mayor, he hadn't worked for it. He didn't deserve it

"Ye have a good look in yer eyes. You are a good lad aren't you? And you seem well equipped" Said Pete "Well, maybe I just happen to want to help a young lad such as yerself as much as i can"

"But sir-"

"I'll not take a no for an answer, lad, you know what is like around here, you do something and you get your reward" Then Pete smiled with a smile so bright it could rival the sun "Now, about the debt I owe..." Pete gave Ares a sealed letter for Dorian, saying that its contents will more than settle his debts.  He wipes it against a stale barrel of day-old catch before handing over to you.  “That should serve Dorian right, for how he treats his debtors,” spitting into the lake to accentuate his dislike.

Ares laughed and bid his goodbye before going back into town, he had to find the mayor

So now it was going back to the main square of the town, Ares walked around the streets, passing by the market he could hear the sound of the heavy hammer hitting the hot steel, maybe that was the last round Lyle needed to finish the sword he had been working on while he had visited. Maybe he had already finished and had taken on the next project, he wished he could just do that, not having problems going from one task to another, he was even surprised he had been able to go back and forth from one point of the town to the other without losing himself in a crowd or something of the like, Ares looked inside Zackariah's shop as he passed by, a strange smell now coming from the inside of the potion-signed shop, Ares laughed as he walked past it

Then he arrived at the squared through the wall that separated it from the other districts of the town, Ares walked up to the mayor, the man still seemed nervous, but the second he spotted Ares walking towards him, he stepped up to him, both of them meeting in the middle

"Do you have it?" Asked the man, Ares took the letter from his inventory and showed it to the mayor, holding it with his index and middle finger, when the mayor went in to get the letter Ares moved it out of the way earning himself a look that could kill from the mayor

"You know how many placed and tasks did I have to do for this?" He asked

"No, sadly I don't" said the mayor, his sight still focused on the letter in Ares's hand

"Well, I went from Zackariah to Lyle, the blacksmith and finally landed on Pete, he was the one who owed you" Explained Ares as he handed the stinking letter over to the mayor, who opened it doubiously

"Well, yes," he stammed, "I suppose that's a fair trade. Truth be told, I don't quite remember how much we loaned him, anyway." Delicately, with two fingers, Dorian set the parchment aside. "Uh, alright, that's all, then. Thank you for your help. If you ever need anything in this town, do not hesitate to drop my name. I'm sure that's far more valuable than any monetary reward I could offer you, anyway."

"I assure you i will not forget those words, mayor" Said Ares
