Ares looked around the town square. The square of the first town in all SAO, also known as the place you arrive when you start your journey towards the top of the floating castle... Ares would be happy if it wasn't for the looming threat over his head. That dying in this digital world might also mean dying in the real one. Yeah, he had connected late to the game because of prepping his siblings for school and hadn't even checked why the internet was booming about the game; some kind people had explained that to him, and he was... processing. It had taken him a few hours to really think about what his next path would be; would he just stay in the town of beginnings like a sitting duck or would he go forth, helping the people clear the death game? He did want to go back and see his siblings again; he hadn't quite treated them alright when he left them at school. He had to go back, and that was something he couldn't bear to happen without taking action; if he was to go back home, he'd fight his way there. Ares cracked his knuckles as he approached the NPC that was supposed to give the first of the quests. He was surrounded by players, which made him pretty easy to find, especially for someone who hadn't quite gotten to game a lot before stepping into Aincrad. "Hey you, stop!" Ares let out a sight as the NPC began moving towards him with long strides "Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable." "I don't know if capable is the wording I'd use, but yes, what do you need?"

As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-" Flustered, Dorian systematically runs his fingers over his perfect moustache. "You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." With a wave of his hand, Dorian continues, "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?" "Well, I think i could try and do so" Ares said, smiling back at the mayor "And i will keep it from everybody else, we don't quite need the people of the town to know their mayor forgets about the most important things, don't you think?" Dorian nodded after hearing Ares's acceptance. "Excellent, I knew I could count on you! You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money." "Then where do i need to go to find Aackariah? You know, If i want to go fetch your money I will need to know where, you know, im quite new in this town and don't know the place" Ares said as he looked at the mayor "Oh yeah, of course" said the mayor "You will find his shop near the market area, you can get there by simply walking on that direction" He said pointing towards one of the gates of the square, Ares followed with his sight the finger and nodded understanding the place "Good, then you just need to look for a sign with a potion in it, that is Zackariah's shop" After that interaction, Ares bid his goodbye to the mayor and started walking "I'll make sure to have it done by today!" Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #3 Share Posted November 12 Ares walked into the shop, no quite sure he could follow the directions the mayor had given him, after all, he was the one who had forgotten who had he loaned money to. Ares was met with shelves and shelves of colorful and shiny potions, he had never been at an alchemist's shop, but this certainly did the trick, now he was only missing... “Oh, hello," Yup, the shop keeper, the distracted greeting came from behind the counter. A man with a long, snow-white beard glances up from a bubbling cup of sweet-smelling purple liquid. He didn't know him, but that one was sure to be Zackariah, Ares approached the counter, ready to ask him for the money, but the old man seemed quite energetic, well, more like annoyed "Are you here to order something? I’m sorry, but I am currently swamped with orders, and I’m running out of supplies.” Light came into the man's dark eyes as Ares could almost see the lightbulb going off over the man's head signifying a brilliant idea. “Would you gather a few materials for me? Flowers, herbs, rare woods, whatever you can find outside the city walls. I promise I’ll help you fill your order as soon as you return. In fact, I would be willing to show you how to do it yourself.” Ares raised an eyebrow "Sorry but I think I'm here to get some money lent by the mayor?" He said, Zackariah sighed "Look, if you do something for me I will give you what you are looking for, does that seem fair?" "I guess it does" Ares shrugged as he looked back at the shopkeeper "Explendid!" Said Zackariah as he took out a bubbling pot of fondue "First you have to take a bit of this fondue, I want to make sure it is just right, then you will head to the wilds and try to get me something good" Ares looked at the pot, he was one to eat whatever he found, but that didn't seem really tasty at all "Is the pot thing necessary?" Asked Ares, Zackariah just looked back at him and Ares sighed as he put his hand out "Let's make it quick" Ares looked as the man put some fondue in a cup and he moved his Sight from him to the bubbling mess before gobbling it down, it was hot, but he had endured worse things Spoiler +3 to LD The aftertaste wasn't that bad, at least that's what he told himself as he let his head rest for a second, he wasn't one to drink, but that one was a very bad shot, his head was almost too clear, Ares shook his head
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #4 Share Posted November 12 (edited) "I guess I will see you later, old man" Said Ares as he coughed before leaving for the wild zones of the first floor. The shop was crowded and he almost stumbled into a shelf, but he managed to evade the hit and possibly being indebted for life with the shop keeper. The man walked through the city still amazed, the visuals of the game were amazing, he was sure that he'd easily mistake everything for real life if not for the clear signs of it being a game such as the green diamonds floating over the player's heads, the UI in his field of view, specially the bar at the top left of it, which represented his health, it was still strange to have that monitored, how did they know what his hp was like? what was a one hp damage? stabbing your toe? that hurt... but the thing was that they had nailed his appearance, it was just as it had been back in real life Ares almost tripped over and fell when passing through the door that led to the wilderness of the first floor, it was pretty, idyllic almost, those unreal platforms really did make it all feel like it didn't belong in real life, because they didn't, but the dirt path he was following looked so real... damn he wished the terrain around his home town was half as good or pretty as this one was, in real life he only had mounts and forests, but not big forests, no, little patches of forests that could be barely called that, the wild life ate too much of the ground vegetation to make traveling them difficult, so at least they had some good things... But he was not there to see the scenery, no, he was there to try and forage whatever looked like could be useful for the Zackariah guy, he hadn't really foraged like ever, well, there was that time his father had took him asparagus hunting, that had been fun, but so many years ago he barely even remembered it, plus, how could foraging in real life relate to foraging in a video game, with a sigh, Ares started looking for whatever could be useful Spoiler Gathering Roll #1 ID: 237508 | Roll: 14 (+3) = 17 Gathering Succesfull! +1 Material Edited November 12 by Ares-49789
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #5 Share Posted November 12 The moment Ares got the notification he raised his head and let out a sigh, as if he was a journeyman who had just met the quota set by the owner of a land, and it had been his first try, it seemed easier than he had first thought, as it was, in fact, just like in real life. Meaning that walking around, looking among the bushes and different parts of the land did result in getting the materials he needed for whatever that Zackariah man wanted them for, most likely potions, as his shop had been filled to the brim with all kinds of those shiny and colorful bottles full of mysterious liquids with even more mysterious effects, most likely helpful effects, but he still didn't like the feeling they gave him, even if he had some of those potions on him But, it was not the time to sleep on the results of his first search, there was still some time and he wasn't in a hurry, the man hadn't given him a quota to meet, so if he wanted, he could get more of the materials and maybe fetch a good prize for them, not that it mattered a lot to him, but he did need a weapon to not be under equipped when he needed to fight. What was he going to do, Punch the enemies to death? Ares shook his head, no, he needed some equipment apart from his armor, a spear or a mace would be great, he'd choose the one with best synergy with the combat style on his mind, that one being: Tanking, if dying there meant doing so literally then he'd make sure to not being able to die. Although that might be a flawed way to think about it, still he was not someone to budge when push came to shove, no, he was the one who shoved back Ares, think, do not get distracted. Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #6 Share Posted November 12 Well, that one was a quick one, it had only taken him a few minutes before he was able to locate the next material that the alchemist needed, maybe it was because of the content of that strange pot, it was true that it had taken a toll on him, but it had left his mind very clear, maybe that was the same sensation those famous pills gave to people, you know the ones his friends had told him about for ages but he hadn't gotten to try because his parents thought they would be addicting, who knows, maybe being able to focus on some task was great... Still he was tired and that grass looked very comfy, maybe he could come back at a latter date and sleep for a while, it wouldn't be that bad, well, maybe. But he didn't care No Ares, it's not time to sleep. He had managed to find two materials so far, that was plenty, maybe if he gave it another chance more of it would come up, he had the time... Ares scratched his beard thinking, damn, he had just shaved when he first hopped into Aincrad, so now he didn't have his beard to make him think better. He missed the feeling of the hair on his chin when it was being touched by his fingers when he tried to think, He let out a sigh and put both hands on his hips and looked around, yeah, gathering for a bit more and then going back to Zackariah, that would be the best course of action, after that he had to get the money back to the mayor and maybe sell whatever was left after handing it over to the alchemist Spoiler Gathering Roll #3 ID: 237510 | Roll: 13 (+3) = 16 Gathering Succesfull! +1 Material
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #7 Share Posted November 12 Damn he was good, maybe giving it another try wouldn't really be that bad... No, that was just losing his time, he wanted to level up, get some money, get some more skills and go to the front lines, he wanted to fight his way out of the game and if he wanted to do so he'd have to be thoughtful of his progress, the very least he could do was to move his ass back to the shop of the Alchemist and get payed so he could get the experience he needed and the money. He needed a weapon and the more money he had, the better it would be. Even better, If he had enough he could get his hands on a good shield, that was something he really wanted, At the very least it would mean that his life wouldn't be as threatened as it would be without it With that, Ares started walking back to the city across the wild plains, he did like the feeling of getting that fresh air. He didn't get that much of it in his hometown, not because it was that big of a city, but because he barely got any time to himself when he was back home, maybe all of this could be just like a vacation from taking care of his siblings. Yeah, a long and deadly vacation in a digital world where he had to be on alert if he wanted to stay alive. That came just in time, because he almost didn't take the right path in the crossroads. Only god knows what could have happened if he hadn't been aware of where his feet were taking him After a sounded sigh, Ares walked to the city and traversed through it until he was back at the trading district, he was good with directions so even less time was spent looking for the shop with the sign with a potion, at least, he had the things he needed and he was going to clear that mission
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #8 Share Posted November 12 "Hey old man, I'm back" Ares walked into the shop and navigated the shelves until he was back at the counter, where the man was. As if no time had even passed since the last time they had seen each other, well, it was not like it had taken him so much time, at most an hour or so "Don't old man me, I could be your father" Said the man with a laugh before raising his sight from the pot earning him an eyebrow raise from Ares "Did you get what I sent you for, son?" Yup, Ares didn't like to be called son, his own father barely called him by his name, so it was a strange situation. Especially when the one calling him like that was an NPC of a game, even if he didn't really seem like one "I do" He said, as he took it from his inventory into the counter, he could see a nod of approval from the man as he inspected the merch "Good work, young man" Said Zackariah, pushing the material towards Ares and taking something from under the counter, Ares watched as the old man carefully poured the liquid from the pot into an empty glass "Take it" He said, leaving the materials and the potion in the counter, Ares looked at him "What about the mayor's loan?" Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #9 Share Posted November 12 At the very least, the blacksmith's shop wasn't as far from the alchemist's than he had thought it to be, it was just road up, not even six buildings apart, so even if the market was on full swing, he didn't take much to arrive at his destination. The sound of the hammer and the anvil hitting each other was one he liked. What he did not like, was the dim light that surrounded him the second he entered the shop. He knew the reason behind it, as it made it easier to distinguish the differences between the metal's colors when red hot, after his eyes adapted to the light level, he found himself in front of another old man, pushing his seventy and with a great gray beard to show, he was hurling a heavy looking hammer. Which for the way it sounded, was definitely as heavy as it looked, he didn't seem as kind as Zackariah, no, he was sharper, wilder he corrected himself "I'm busy" He stated, Ares smiled "Hi busy, I'm here to-" He was almost instantly cut off by the blacksmith, who hadn't stopped hammering the hot steel on the anvil "I don't do anything without payment. Go deal with a few of those pesky boarlets for me, and bring them back whole or else just their tusks. I don’t care which. They're pretty weak, so even you shouldn't have any trouble. Do that, then I'll hear you out." Ares looked at the man with disbelief, how could he just send him to battle as if it was nothing? those things were said to be dangerous, the top one noob killers, and he wanted him to fight without a weapon? "You do know I have no weapon, don't you?" The blacksmith looked up for the first time in their conversation and with a sigh kept hammering the steel until the heat left it "How can you call yourself an adventurer with no weapon to your name?" Asked the blacksmith as he stuck the steel piece he had been working on back into the forge to get it to heat back up, Ares guessed that he had time now, because he signaled him towards one of the forge's corners, where a pile of different weapons rested "Choose one" He said "Give it back later" Ares couldn't help but send a 'Really?' look at Lyle before squatting to chose... so he was back at that crossroads, either he got a mace or a spear, well, a Mace did fit his needs, Ares took one of the many one handed maces in the pile, it didn't look like it was bad, just trash compared to the rest of the shop, when he was examining the mace, he turned around and saw that Lyle was handing him some kind of bag "This ought to make hunting easier" Said the man before promptly kicking Ares out of the forge "What has just happened?" Ares-49789 0 Posted November 12 Author #10 Share Posted November 12 He, for one, didn't want to go back into the blacksmith's shop and risk being kicked out again. So, it was better to just go do whatever he had sent him to do, at least his UI had taken it as an acceptance to the quest, because now there was a window telling him to sleep or defeat three boarlets. Lightning went through his spine as he started walking back to the wild parts of the floor, yeah, he had to fight and defeat 3 boarlets, because he wasn't just going to stay there and let them sleep, nop, he'd fight his way out of Aincrad and that included making sure those pesky boars didn't kill anybody else It took him almost the same time to get there as it had taken him last time, not that bad, even if he hadn't quite learned the paths that led to the plains. Before he had just passed by the boarlets using the dirt path, but now it was different, now he had to fight them, Ares looked at three boarlets together, those little shits had more kills to their name than most of the bosses together, at least that's what he had managed to learn from the guide he had gotten for free somewhere, well, he was not going to fight three of those monsters at the same time, hell no, he was going to fight them one on one, find them isolated and kill them off before they were able to call for reinforcements Didn't take him much before he found what he was looking for, a boar, a single boar alone and near some forest, the perfect creature to test his fighting skills, which he was sure, they were not great. Harmless even, but he knew of the reputation those things held, they were the ultimate noob killers, the ones with the most kills to their names and the worst nightmare of many. He clenched his fist against the mace as he prepared himself mentally for the strike, he needed to take advantage of the surprise factor, deal as much damage as he could in a single swing. Ares-49789 0 Posted November 13 Author #13 Share Posted November 13 (edited) Ares looked wide-eyed as he saw the particles of light float towards the sky as the thing that had been a boar disappeared. After being kind of out for at least fifteen minutes, Ares got up from the grass, his face still marked by the folds of his clothing, Ares yawned as he sat up... Did he just woke up after sleeping in the field? The same field he had fought a boarlet in? He really had to start sleeping in regular intervals or he'd end up dying because he just fell down during a hunting trip or something in the future and either he was alone or his companions could do nothing to get him to wake up... That was scary to think about, he shook his head and stood up, looking around, his health was still touched since his last fight, still, he needed to take down 2 more boars, and so he would do... Ares closed his eyes for a second and opened them, looking directly at the solitary boarlet, his heart was pumping blood all over his body and the adrenaline was already kicking in, making his blood boil as it had never done before. Fire roared in his eyes and muscles as he finally let the heavy mace go down onto the boar, aiming for its side to try and end the fight there, he was angry. Angry with the beast, member of the species that had ended the lives of so many people, angry with himself because he had decided that this game would be fun to play and angry because there was a chance he would not live enough to really see his siblings again, and that, that scared him more than he was supposed to be scared En Recovery 18+1->19 Post Action: Basic attack vs boarlet: -1EN Free Action: None ID: 237599 | BD: 8 (+2) | Major Critical hit +2 DMG -> 2+2= 4 DMG Ares-49789 | HP: 19/20 | EN: 18/20 (-1) | MIT: 20 | DMG: 2 | ACC: 2 [6] Boarlet | -3/5HP (-4) | DMG: 3 [Dead] Edited November 13 by Ares-49789
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 13 Author #18 Share Posted November 13 (edited) After Ares saw the light spectacle that notified him of his success in killing the boarlet, the young man sighed as he felt the mace on his hand, his grasp still very rigid around the handle. He wanted to go back home, was it really necessary to go there by risking his own live once and again so that he could finish this death game? No, it wasn't necessary, but when he got home to his siblings, he wanted to tell them everything about that place, about the beautiful plains in the first floor, the dangerous monsters and the people he was meeting, how much did the NPCs looked and acted like real people and everything else. He wanted to tell his family how much had he thought of them while he was trapped in the game, to tell them that he had fought tooth and nail to get there and not lie any single time, he wanted his little brother to look up to him, he wanted his little sisters to know their big brother had their backs no matter what happened and no mater what problem they had gotten themselves into, he'd be there to fight and defend them, just like he'd do with the ones that were fighting in the front lines in that moment when he got there Ares looked at the town on the distance, its walls towering over the planes and started walking towards them, he still had one boarlet left to go, but he wanted to be nearer the town when he killed it to make easier going back to the blacksmith... It didn't take him much time before he found his last prey, also known as the last boarlet he needed Edited November 13 by Ares-49789
Ares-49789 0 Posted November 13 Author #19 Share Posted November 13 (edited) Turn 1 Ares-49789 Turn Ares was not someone to dream big, since he was a little boy he had idealized three different people, the first one, his big brother, he had been the son of his father's first marriage and had gone to work at Japan, he had been the one to get him the Nerve gear for his birthday and the same one who introduced him to SAO and most importantly taught him how to teach, second one was his father. His father was relentless, no matter how many setbacks live shot at him he always kept pushing forward trying to make the best out of everything he had, he was a carpenter and had taught him a lot from hunting to caring for the mountain as good as it did of him, the third one, his maternal uncle, he was a Spanish legionary, one of death's boyfriends as they were called back home. Ares had never told his family because they wouldn't let him do so, but he wanted to follow his tracks and become a legionary And it was not on his plans to let a damn boar get in his way, Ares swung his mace towards the boar with his eyes full of determination, he was going to survive and he was going to tell his family what he wanted to do En Recovery 18+1->19 Post Action: Basic attack vs boarlet: -1EN Free Action: None ID: 237600 | BD: 4 (+2) | Normal Hit: 2 DMG to boarlet Mob Turn Boarlet attacks Ares-49789 ID: 237601 | BD: 4 | Miss Ares-49789 | HP: 19/20 | EN: 18/20 (-1) | MIT: 20 | DMG: 2 | ACC: 2 [2] Boarlet | 3/5HP (-2) | DMG: 3 Edited November 13 by Ares-49789

At least that's what he thought, because the information gathered from the previous encounters hadn't really been too perfect, it had been more like things he had noticed. Ares looked into the beast's eyes, those red eyes were just too much, he had said it to himself before, but they would appear in many of his nightmares on the future, Ares laughed, yeah, he was going to be one of death's boyfriends, one of the defenders of his country and not even a highly angered beast would be on his way to do so EN Recovery 18+1->19 Post Action: Basic attack vs boarlet: -1EN Free Action: None ID:23602 | BD: 6 (+2) | Normal Hit: 2 DMG to Boarlet Mob Turn Boarlet attacks Ares-49789 ID: 237603 | BD: 9 | Minor Critical hit DMG +1 ! 3 +1 = 4 -20 MIT = 1 min damage Ares-49789 | HP: 18/20(-1) | EN: 18/20 (-1) | MIT: 20 | DMG: 2 | ACC: 2 [2] Boarlet | 1/5HP (-2) | DMG: 3 Edited November 13 by Ares-49789
