[PP-F05] Sharkbait Abridged <<Bloodstained Land>>

Recommended Posts

"Gods, I hate that prick," Freyd muttered as he exited Abdullah's abode, his appearance shifting from that of a pink-haired waifu with a too tight skirt and proudly bouncing boxum funbags to his far less attention-seeking usual self.  Pink became black, skin turned to oily-black plate armor, and a keen black katana sprouted from his back to complete the ensemble.  "There must be a way to trigger this quest without having to suffer through that NPC's insufferable ego every, single, time."

Rolling his eyes as gauntleted hands pulled the soft woolen cowl over his head, the locals stared at him with wonder and confusion.  Wrapping yourself in metal, in this desert heat, was a death sentence, at least so far as they were concerned.  Only fools and demons would dare don such attire.

"Don't worry," came a cocky reassurance.  "It's air conditioned."  No better way to deal with confusion than by adding a splash of the absurd.

"Alright.  One last stop before we go, for old time's sake, right Persi?"

A slinky black shadow with slotted azure eyes slunk out from behind the same beaded curtain as he'd just left behind.  Barely as tall as his shin guards, the tiny mongoose looked pleased as punch with herself, having just eaten all of Abdullah's prize caviar while Freyd had buttered him up with his breasticles.  The suddenly stream of expletives behind them made it all worthwhile.

"Should we grab a coffee before we go?  Might be a few stragglers still crazy enough to let me serve myself as sharkbait for their benefit."

Persi was already guzzling the dregs out of someone's half-finished booze, the owner passed out or possible dead a half dozen yards away.

"What a lovely place for a last minute vacation before a raid.  Wonder if the mobs charge by the minute?"

Hot. Miserable. Why was Eulogy here again? Something about gathering sandworm dung, but the details were lost in the hazy hell of floor five.

The fifth floor was a hateful letter to anyone that enjoyed comfort. The sun beat down on the entire floor, the wind was always enough to carry things away without actually cooling you off. And Fortaleza was dry, much like the game itself. 3ulogy was bitter about that one. But a nearby cafe offered a glimmer of hope. An unattended cup of something that looked and smelled like booze. Maybe the game wasn’t such a buzzkill after all.

Then, the strangest thing happened. A sliver of night sky leapt from nowhere and began to guzzle the beverage. The mug, once full of opportunity, was now full of… spectral mongoose? Or was it a cat?

Whatever it was, it was out of place. Eulogy glanced around for an owner. His best guess was a nearby player, ruminating on how lovely the town was. Probably a joke. Right? Maybe he was just a little slow. On the other hand, his equipment looked powerful and deadly. Eulogy doubted that he’d simply stumbled into it. This guy knew what he was doing. If I crank up the cheer, maybe I can bum some old equipment off of him. Taking a moment to compose himself, he approached with the air of a lost kid. It wasn’t his favorite way to make an impression—he smaller stature often made him the butt of jokes. (The game reverting everyone’s avatars to their real-world dimensions was just salt in the wound.) But the man would probably respond more positively to some helpless kid than a stranger begging free stuff from him.

“Hey, mister? I think I took a wrong turn at the teleporter… Am I in Ellesmera right now? I’m supposed to be leveling with some friends so that I can do the harder quests.” He sighed melodramatically. That was probably laying it on a little too thick.

Kandy took a deep inhale than exhale. She was never good at these sort of things- or so that's what she thought.  People could think very differently than Kandy's prominent insecurity.  Kandy was destined to do better, but in the meantime she could never come to that conclusion.

The girl with her weapon in hand and her helmet on head, began to approach the two men she'd be accompanying for this journey. She came from behind both 3ulogy and Freyd. Apparently, 3ulogy had asked him something that she was a little bit confused herself.  No judgment came across her mind and her lips. After she let Freyd answer 3ulogy she would make her presence known.  She hadn't taken either of their physical characters in her mind as she more or less came from behind.

"Uh......" she began to start to say, it was an undeniable fumble, "Oh!" she chimed, "Hello!" she piped. Her mouth was the only thing that showed and there was a nervous smile. It wasn't per se nervousness solely from a social situation, but also what was going to occur in the future.  She did take notice of Freyd's familiars but didn't seem to hover her eyes over them, as she knew they wouldn't
necessarily have the answers she needed.

Pausing as two strangers approached, near-simultaneously, Freyd's hand twitched reflexively as if ready to reach for the black katana hit at his hip.  Coming off another heated exchange with the insufferable NPC behind the nearby beaded curtain, it was wise to be weary.  Abdullah had already tried to have him and Wulfrin killed in the arena up on twenty-four, and used lesser minion to pathetic efforts locally.  Who knew what else he might try.  Confirmation of their safe zone status stayed his hand long enough to match the first man's plea with a single raised eyebrow.  The lost puppy routine might have worked better if every player in the game hadn't been here for the same share of forever.  Though it felt odd to see someone even try it.  Another young woman approached from the opposite direction, yet actually looking lost herself.

Gods, they both look so young.  But that's just it, isn't it.  Danger can just as easily wear a child's face, a victim's or a temptress'.  One didn't survive the game's spycraft long by blindly trusting to appearances.  And yet, risks had to be taken, progress made, and hope offered.

"Let me guess," a raised hand interrupting with false expectations, "you're both here for the Sharkbait program, right?  Have you filled out all the forms and notified your next of kin?  I have time for one last run before I hit the raid, but we're going to have to be quick about it.  Here, have some of this."  Unfurling a wrapped dessert from thin air, Freyd took a piece himself to benefit from its familiar buffs then shared it with the others.  "Terra Firma's basin isn't far.  We can talk details on the way.  Oh, right..."  A few finger taps also shared the quest and party invite, making evident everyone's names and base stats to each other.

Yeah.  Okay.  Think I can stop worrying about assassins for the moment.

Persi, meanwhile, had poured herself into a glass to find its bottom, while he'd not yet even managed to order his own drink.

"One, to go," he called to the nearby surly barista, who looked more like a cross between a Mad Max thug and assassin for hire, yet was also known to make the very finest espresso. Her spikey orange hair was an especially nice touch, if not particularly subtle. "With a dash of vanilla.  Oh, and whatever these two want, if anything.  My treat."

Just like that, the man offered him a spot for “Sharkbait.” Whatever that was. Eulogy accepted the stranger’s party request to glance at his stats. Struggling to maintain his composure, an observant player might have noticed his eyebrows raise a fraction of a centimeter. Are the stats supposed to go this high?! Or is he some kind of admin account?? Whoever he was, he was more than some powerful equipment tacked onto a clueless player.

But still… far too trusting, just to reach out and offer help to people he never knew. (Eulogy’s mind processed the twitch of the man’s hand as nothing more than a muscle spasm.) Maybe Eulogy could worm some good places to grind out of the old man’s memory banks. He carefully dialed the “personability” back to a more relaxed level.

“If it’s not dangerous, it’s not exciting!” Eulogy chuckled. “Anyways, I’m sure you’ve got everything covered.”

Another player had joined them, a woman with a large helmet and weapon walked up beside them quietly. Eulogy quickly introduced himself. “Name’s Eulogy. I like your weapon. Is that a spear? The helmet must make it hard to see though.”

Quote

“Oh, and whatever these two want, if anything.  My treat.”

Eulogy’s heart lurched for just a moment. He finally smelled the espresso, and his mind was filled with the gentle warming sensation of a cinnamon and hazelnut cappuccino, with extra whipped cream on top. It was his go-to drink back home whenever he was out on his own. But he wasn’t about to divulge that to some stranger. He’d probably just laugh at his overly-sweet tooth. And besides, the place probably wouldn’t have anything comparable. It wasn’t worth mentioning.

“I don’t drink coffee, but thanks.” Eulogy flashed a smile before changing the subject. “So what is ‘Sharkbait’? This doesn’t really seem like the floor to go shark hunting.”

Sand.

Sable hated sand.

It always got into places that it shouldn't and it made running difficult. Not to mention it was annoyingly hot as well. If he wasn't already at the specified location he would have already turned around and went back to the first floor. He knew that there were a few quests that were more on his level (literally) but the offer to be taken through a higher level quest in order to boost his number faster was too good to pass up. So here he was, trudging through the sand and finally into the safe zone on the fifth floor in search of a guy in black.

"Who in their right mind would wear black here? It's like a hundred degrees and the sun is--" looking up into the sky and at the bottom of the sixth floor the young man furrowed his brows, "How in the hell does this work exactly? Where does the light come from?"

After a moment he sighed and continued his search, he was here to skip a few levels, not contemplate the inner workings of the death game they were all trapped inside. It didn't take him long to locate the individual he was on the hunt for. Freyd was his name apparently, and he was clad in not only black, but armor as well. Two others were speaking with him as Sable stepped up, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Sorry for getting here late, this is the Shark bait thing right?" he looked at the three players, nodding to each one, "Name's Sable, nice to meet you all."

"Yes. I'm here for the Sharkbait program...."  she responded to him.

The younger man, much like herself compared to Freyd, offered a compliment to her which took her eyes from Freyd over to his.

"Oh...." she got caught off guard very soft by his greeting. The girl tilted her head, "Oh....uh, it's easy for me to have it on. I feel it's very nice under here.  But yes, I can see!"  she nodded now. Her voice was very mousy. While this other person seemed to welcome joining their party. He seemed to like the aesthetic she had going on regardless. She smiled kindly at him- 3ulogy.

"It's a polearm, but I kind of stab on the end and can also hit them like a hammer on the side...." Kandy looked to the giant piece of metal she weld.

She was then offered coffee by the more experienced but elder man.

"Um, no thanks. I'm not needing a drink. Thank you though!" she tried to chime her best to pop up cheerfully but despite the South African lineage it did no favors for a strong tone, with the volume and quality of her voice from under the helmet.

More people were joining as evident by a new person approaching. He introduced himself kindly as Sable, "Hello Sable! I am Kandy!"   Her free hand gave a small wave to the young man who apparently was going to add himself as well to their group.  The girl was trying not to look him head to toe, but she did back up from him which would allow her to observe the much taller men in more detail.  It could've came across as a bit odd, but it was not out of fear more of analysis to put their names and faces two and two to avoid having to make any slim mistake later.

"I couldn't have marketed this thing better if I'd tried," Freyd replied, marveling how word of mouth alone seemed to have accomplished what millions in advertising col might never have achieved.  Grabbing his espresso and downing it in a single swig, the man's eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets at the sudden invigoration.

"So, here's the deal.  We're heading to a dust bowl down the road, where a mutant sand shark named Terra Firma spawns.  It's a quest boss that looks and acts like a field boss, and also the angriest whirling ball of gnashing teeth you can imagine.  Yeah.  It's a bit terrifying, and could kill each of you in a single shot - If you pull aggro.  So, don't. Keep it focused on me."

Guiding them down the dusty red sands that passed as the main trade road out of Fortaleza, Freyd handed out a few food buffs to ensure that they all at least had a decent chance to hit the beast, even if most of them were unlikely to be able to pierce its damnably thick hide.

"Despite all of its fury and embodied terror, Terra Firma has one notable weakness: it can only attack one target at a time.  So long as it stays focused on me, the rest of you can wail away with impunity.  There's even benefit to doing so.  A single critical hit from any of us will trigger its special assault mode and unlock a special skill for all of you when the quest is completed.  So don't be shy to try your hand at getting a strike in - once I give the word."  Making eye contact with each one, he made certain that they all understood the stakes.

Reaching their destination, the group paused on the rocky cliff face outlining a roughly circular bowl that looked suspiciously like an arena from their vantage.  The sands below were silty and fine, shifting like earthen waves at the mercy of the desert's furnace-like winds.

"There."  Freyd's black gauntlet pointed to a  cresting mottled brown fin as it emerged from a swale, only the dive back under again.  The twenty-foot long lump of monster below it was more than a little disturbing.  "Wait 'til you see its teeth."

Freyd uses Tracking on Terra Firma

Another warm body was fine with 3ulogy. It just gave him more space to fade into the background.

Eulogy’s heartbeat quickened the more he heard Freyd talk. He didn’t get to see real action like this often. He began to hop from foot to foot lightly, psyching himself up. Besides, if he was lucky, things would go sideways. Things were always exciting when shit hit the fan. I wonder if I’ll have a chance to experiment? A bad idea. Freyd appeared very observant. If he caught Eulogy misbehaving, it would become a whole thing. No, Eulogy thought with disappointment. Best to play it safe.

Freyd pointed out the shark in the distant sandy haze. The thing looked barely larger than a real shark. What was everyone worried about anyways? This was going to be a cakewalk. Eulogy strolled right up to the edge and drew his dagger. He began to play with the edge excitedly, and in his excitement, his mask slipped for a brief moment. “Whenever you’re ready, old man.” He cast his eyes down into the bowl with hunger.

Sable nodded to you young woman wearing a mask that had introduced herself to him, "It's nice to meet you." he responded reflexively. He had turned to the other person in their rag tag party expecting a similar exchange of pleasantries and frowned when he wasn't acknowledged. Some people aren't ones for small talk. As the group left the cafe Sable munched on the food Freyd provided, attempting to take note of the buffs he had received and keep track of the conversation.

"Did I bite off more than I can chew?" he thought to himself as they all trudged through the red sand. As they neared the rim of the sand bowl that their target resided in the young man shook his head, "It's too late now."

Hearing 3ulogy call Freyd an old man Sable arched a brow and turned to them, "Really? He's not that much older than us."

Freyd expressed his plan, goals, and directions with the group. He was very serious about the matter and therefore she quietly listened.  As Freyd made eye contact with her, beneath her helmet, she gave a firm nod as if trying to confirm she understood.  She followed behind them and as they made there way to the cliff, Kandy was determined to park herself in the back of the group.

She saw the ugly beast moivng, and Freyd brought up to look at it's teeth. Thank god she wore her helmet, because of her eccentric facial expressions were changing abruptly under it.

She didn't really want to see his teeth but.....

'What an ethusiastic individual....' Kandy's thoughts traced over 3ulogy's comment to Freyd. It was a bit mean to say that to him, but she was not going to say anything about that. She wasn't his parent.

Kandy slowly creeped up behind the men and hovered over the men's shoulders quietly.

Leaping down onto the drum sands, landing to create a deliberate thud to attract the beast's attention, Freyd wanted to make himself its target.  Without hesitation, the sub-sandy lump veered violently his way, streaking like a torpedo as if he was an entire convoy worth of juicy targets all bundled into one.  Slamming his fist into the ground several more times, just to piss it off to maximum potential, Freyd stood and claimed his stance, ready to face down the monster.

Sliding one leg back to brace against the incoming charge, Freyd kept his katana in a low guard and waited until the giant maw broke the surface.  Row upon row of serrated teeth, arrayed like seats full of critics at some theatrical premiere, opened wide as it eagerly sought to devour him for his insolence.  How dare he set foot in its domain?  A subtle sidestep and flash of steel, and the beast missed its mark, gaining a broad, long slash along its flanks for its trouble.

"You can come into the out now," he called over his shoulder to the others.  "Just make sure you keep out of its way.  It won't hesitate to eat you as an appetizer on its way back round to try and eat me."

The ugly beast focused its attention fully onto Freyd. As the beast moved and focused on him, she made her way around 3ulogy and Sable and attempted to thrust her small weight into her polearm as a way to cut the beast.

Wooo!

Missed.

Kandy sighed.

The monster shifted just enough to completely bounce away from Kandy's weapon.

"Uh oh....." Kandy said under her breath. it was more of like a mental comment she expressed out loud to herself, rather than towards her comrades.  Yet, this was still a true indicator that she truly messed up.  Hopefully, the others in her group would manage to land something.  Yet, she had started her own fight with an undeniable rough start.  As she missed she leaped back to make sure the beast kept it's attention onto Freyd rather than her own. The beast was aware of her, but as long as Freyd tried to maintain its rage onto him than her, she'd try again the next time.  Not wanting to be accidentally hit by 3ulogy or Sable's upcoming attacks she sunk into the back of the group again.

“Sorry,” he rubbed the back of his head with a hint of embarrassment. “It’s just an inside joke my family would use. I guess it sounds mean to say out loud.” He wasn’t sure if the others would buy it, but it was his best option. Maybe another apology after fight would smooth things over? And if people didn’t survive… no apology necessary.

One glance at Freyd told him that no one was dying today. He leapt into the fight, katana bared and ready to make sharkshimi. He adopted a confident, powerful stance that made it clear this was not his first jump into the shark tank.

The fight awoke something in Eulogy. He didn’t get to see things like this very often, let alone be a part of them. Keep it together, buddy. Let the others go in first. Watch how they do it. Catalogue every move. You never know what’s going to come in useful later. Then you can enjoy a little shark time as a treat. But he couldn’t resist. Seeing Freyd leap in, and then Kandy… 3ulogy pulled his plain little dagger out and gave it an experimental twirl. Screw the waiting, screw the watching. I’m here to kill something!

“C’mon, eat me! Over here, stupid shark!” Eulogy grinned as the massive beast paid no attention to his taunts. Despite Eulogy’s low level, he was familiar with the game’s mechanics. Shout all he wanted, and the shark simply wouldn’t care. It was time to make it regret that command.

Lost in the thrill, 3ulogy sprinted underneath the sprinting beast’s legs. Aggro or not, getting stepped on would probably be the end. The solution to that problem was easy: don’t get stepped on. But the feet never seemed to stop moving. Drawing a bead on the boss was harder than anticipated. But then, Terra Firma slowed down just enough, squaring off with the old man in black, and Eulogy saw his chance.

Nothing he did was going to do damage—no amount of confidence would change that. But status effects were status effects. Channeling his stun, he flipped the dagger to a reverse grip and scanned for weak points. A hamstring is never a bad option. Waiting until the last possible moment, Eulogy drove his blade hilt-deep into the beast’s rear leg as it prepared to charge Freyd. It howled in pain, still unaware of the source of the stun, and crashed onto its knee.

“Back to you, Ol—Freyd.”

Move Swiftly | This boss is impervious to benefits provided by the Concentration skill. Additionally, all players suffer a -1 penalty to BD when attacking this boss.
Hard-Scaled | Paralysis, Paralytic Venom, and Freeze are ineffectual against this boss.
Deaf | This mob has no ears, and therefore is immune to the effects of debuff songs.
Weak Spots | On a Player's natural BD of 9 or 10 when attacking this creature, they will gain 50% Phase for that attack. This does not stack with the Phase enhancement.
Assault Mode | If a Player has exploited one of Terra Firma's <<Weak Spots>> during the battle, Terra Firma will activate <<Assault Mode>>. On an LD of 11+, this mob will identify stealthed Players. Its ACC and EVA will swap for the duration of its attack, then revert to normal. It will gain 50% Phase on a BD of 9, and 100% Phase on a BD of 10 or higher. BD modifiers such as ACC can activate these Phase attributes.
