One, unlike the rest, was lit up by the glow of a lantern. Figures twisted impossibly through cracks in walls, peering inside with insectoid eyes. They spied on their prey, a blonde man clad in red, and hoped that he would meet them outside. They did not dare enter, for they knew that something far more dangerous hid within. The man sat idly at a crooked desk, his head hanging over a brown notebook. Occasionally, he would scribble with a half-used pencil before sitting back and looking around the room. Never did he spot the shambling creatures, but he knew they were there. They were always there, somewhere, lurking in the dark. He stretched, and his pencil and notebook dissolved before him. A distorted cry echoed through the house; even the Shamblers shuttered at the sound. It was a muffled mix of sorrow, frustration, and pain. It was the man’s queue to stand. The creatures outside shuffled noiselessly around the house’s perimeter, following the man from room to room. In the kitchen, cabinet doors were left ajar. The smell of the rotting food that filled them spread quickly from one room to the next, eventually filling the air of the entire ground floor. Empty handed, the man returned to the living area. With eyes latched onto the degrading staircase, he stood as still as a statue, waiting for the next wail. He did not move until it came. When it did, he wasted no time funneling up the stairs. The tower was far thinner than the rest of the house, and only so many Shamblers could fit around its stone body. Bricks missing from the unmaintained cylinder were missing, providing plenty of space to track the man’s ascent. The tower’s wooden stairs were stained blue, and the man would often stop to examine it. Near the top, he bent down and gently touched the stained wood. Muttering something inaudible to himself, he scraped at it with a dagger that suddenly appeared in his grip, and filled a tiny vial with it. The items vanished as quickly as they appeared, and he was back on his way. At the top was the attic of a hoarder. An amalgamation of crates and trinkets, both large and small, took up a majority of the room. He looked into the vacant eyes of a tall mannequin. It wore a dusty dress that was in otherwise good condition. Next to it was a box of children’s toys. Once more, the cry rang out, and the Shamblers scurried.
Morningstar 0 Posted December 26, 2024 Author #2 Share Posted December 26, 2024 He fidgeted with the lid of a tightly sealed crate and cursed at the slight health drop caused by splintering wood. The lid broke open. From outside, the Shamblers could not tell what was inside; however, the player moved on from it almost instantly. They clicked their mandibles, feverishly skittering across the attic’s rooftop. His gaze lingered on a stack of boxes in the corner of the room. There were streaks on the hardwood floor, indicating that they had been moved. Something had shifted the boxes before the man had ever arrived. His steps were careful, but nothing could quiet the constant squeaks of the old floorboards. Another shriek bounced from wall to wall; simultaneously, the man rushed around the corner of the box. The Shamblers scurried for a better view, poking their deformed heads through a wide hole in the ceiling. They backed away, afraid of the creature the man had discovered. The creature stopped its wailing abruptly when it realized it had been found. It locked eyes with the man; although it had no face, it had plenty of eyes. Blue ichor, the same that coated the tower’s stairs, poured from an open wound. The creature’s left ankle was bent unnaturally, as if it had narrowly escaped an attack. Its body shook and its cry continued, although the severity of the noise had lessened. The man knelt, uttering something in a hushed voice. The yellow cursor above the creature's head meant that it was docile unless provoked. Perhaps that was why the man felt so comfortable around it. So long as he didn’t attack it first, he could remain nearby without risk of death. The Shamblers felt differently. Their instincts told it to stay far away from Astragalus Anathema, although they did not know it by name. Even injured, it was a greater predator than they were. Slowly, they crept out of sight, disappearing into the shadows. They remained in earshot, however. “Are you hurt?” He asked. There was no response. “I can heal you.” Only the mouthless sobs of a wounded abomination. “Here–” The sentence was cut short by slams and heavy sprinting. The Shamblers left their hiding spots and peeked through the same crevices. Astragalus Anathema was gone. -> searching for source of the noise | 239193 ld9 | the man discovers astragalus anathema
Morningstar 0 Posted December 27, 2024 Author #3 Share Posted December 27, 2024 The man was left crouching behind toppled crates. Visible amounts of dust hung in the air, and he swatted at it between heavy coughs. He stumbled through it, making his way through the attic, back to the staircase. Descending the tower was worse than climbing it. He was slow, and chose his steps wisely. Without anything to light his path, each stair was as dangerous as the Shamblers that watched. They kept their distance, afraid of where Astragalus Anathema may have gone. The insect-headed beings knew that they were not being hunted, but feared that in the blink of an eye, that could change. They wanted their meal and they wanted it without the risk of having to fend off a monster. They spoke to each other through uncomfortably high-pitched clicks. One crawled off. The man made it to the bottom of the staircase safely. Back in the glow of the lantern, he scanned his surroundings. He listened to the hideous groans of Astragalus Anathema, following them to a bedroom in the corner of the house. Aside from dust, it was tidy inside. Half-melted candles sat on the bedside table. They had not been lit in ages, but the wax was in good shape. The bed had been made neatly on one morning, a long time ago, and no one had slept in it since. Clothes filled a small dresser—long dresses with floral patterns, mostly. Whomever the room belonged to before was gone now, along with everyone else. He stood in the center of the room, staring at the bed. Unless Astragalus Anathema had shrunk down and hid in a drawer, it was there, hiding beneath it. The blood spatter confirmed it. “I’m not here to hurt you,” the man assured. Slowly, he bent down, careful as to not startle it. It whimpered, a blue puddle pooling beneath its damaged body. It grew outward, nearly touching the edges of the bed. To see what the man saw, a Shambler was forced to climb partway into the house. It used a hole in the ceiling to enter, tiptoeing down the wall. It froze at the sight of the monster under the bed. Astragalus Anathema screamed, cracking the floorboards beneath it and blinking from its hiding space. It lunged at the Shambler and crushed its head against the side of the wall. -> astragalus anathema tries to escape | 239322 ld17+5=22 -> morningstar tries to catch it | 239323 ld6+6=12 | he fails
Morningstar 0 Posted December 27, 2024 Author #4 Share Posted December 27, 2024 Morningstar’s hand dropped to his waist, his fingers hovering above his blade’s hilt. Before he could draw, the injured monster and the bug creature both vanished. Pixels floated from where the Shambler perished, rising through a hole in the roof, past its brethren. Shortly after, the traveling Shambler returned to its swarm. Alongside it were others—a dozen, at least—all famished and eager to feast. Some met with those early to arrive at the top of the house. The rest watched from below, crawling disgustingly around the walls, staring in through sealed windows. The man left the bedroom and headed straight for the kitchen. He had searched it once when he had arrived, and there were few suitable places to hide. In the kitchen, opposite to the man, there was a deep pantry. He had rummaged through it before, and on his way out, he was sure he had left the doors wide open. So why now were they shut? Carefully, he pinched the door handles and pulled. In the dark, amongst decaying food, was Astragalus Anathema. Its whimpers had slowed, but still it cried out. Affected by blood loss, the thing grew tired; weak. The man held out a hand, but before it could reciprocate, a pair of Shamblers crashed through a window. Their hunger had become too much for them to control. Seeing Astragalus Anathema in its weakened state provided opportunity, and they took it without a second thought. This time, the man was quick. He flourished his blade, slicing once through the first Shambler before shifting his posture towards the second. Behind him, Astragalus Anathema was gone. -> astragalus anathema tries to escape | 239324 ld10+5=15 -> morningstar tries to catch it | 239325 ld1+6=7 | he fails
Morningstar 0 Posted December 27, 2024 Author #5 Share Posted December 27, 2024 More Shamblers climbed through the windows, snapping their inky black forms to fit. They writhed, quick on their feet as they lunged at him, clicking and buzzing all the while. What warded them off previously was beginning to break, and although many of the monsters remained outside, their confidence was growing. Soon enough, the swarm would flood the house in its entirety. The man drilled his blade through the chest of a Shambler, moving on before its body hit the floor. He danced his way into the living room and saw Astragalus Anathema crouching behind the couch, gripping its broken ankle with white knuckles. It moved so quickly in spite of its crippling injury. The man never stood a chance of catching it. A Shambler jumped on his back and his sword flew across the room. It wrapped its long tentacle arms around his neck, strangling him. He gasped for air, the creature screeching into his ear as it suffocated him. He swished his wrist, shuffled through his inventory, and swapped to a set of rings. They formed along his forearms—gold on the left and red on the right. They glowed in tune with the activation of a sword art and suddenly, the Shambler flipped over the man’s back. A swift jab to the monster’s abdomen finished it off. -> astragalus anathema tries to escape | 239326 ld15+5=20 -> morningstar tries to catch it | 239327 ld2+6=8 | he fails
Morningstar 0 Posted December 29, 2024 Author #6 Share Posted December 29, 2024 Through what looked like magic, the man’s sword reappeared in his grip. It replaced the forearm rings and glowed as he brought it above his head. The Shamblers scurried into the living room, b-lining towards him, screeching all the way. He pulled down, cutting through the head of the nearest one. The rest swarmed him, doing everything they could to tear him apart. He charged, not to boost his own damage, but to escape their gnawing mandibles. His feet kicked up and with a loud crash, he blasted his way through the far wall. Outside, everything was worse. The bubble of safety that Astragalus Anathema emanated was gone. Along the way, he had lost his lantern. He heard the crunching of glass from inside the house and the light went out. He was left in the dark, and unfortunately he was not alone. He blinked and he could see again. Through a green overlay, he scanned his surroundings. The Shamblers came by the dozens, perched on rooftops and around corners. They kept their distance, watching him from afar. They wondered what his eyesight was like—whether he could see them. Those he had fought with set out from the front door. They crept quietly across the paved road, their prey finally in sight. Simultaneously, they lunged. -> POST ACTION: TECH-F vs Shambler 1-4 Spoiler ID239447 | bd3 | 25*12 = 300 DMG + Stun -> Shambler 1 ID239448 | bd3 | 25*12 = 300 DMG + Stun -> Shambler 2 ID239449 | bd8 | 25+16*12 = 492 DMG + Stun -> Shambler 3 ID239450 | bd6 | 25+16*12 = 492 DMG + Stun -> Shambler 4 EN: -16 Morningstar | HP: 840/840 | EN: 104/120 | DMG: 25 | EVA: 4 | ACC: 5 | BH: 43 | LD: 6 | REC: 8 | FLN: 16 | AA | PARA-V Shambler 1 | HP: 300/600 | DMG: 136 | STUNNED Shambler 2 | HP: 300/600 | DMG: 136 | STUNNED Shambler 3 | HP: 108/600 | DMG: 136 | STUNNED Shambler 4 | HP: 108/600 | DMG: 136 | STUNNED
Morningstar 0 Posted December 29, 2024 Author #7 Share Posted December 29, 2024 Steel whistled in the soft wind. The shattering of the three Shamblers masked the sound of raindrops pittering against the stone street. The man’s breath was visible in the cold air. He huffed, marching back towards the dark, damaged home. The Shamblers perched on rooftops dared not move, lest they meet the end of their predecessors. He ducked into the house, wiping the water from his face. Somewhere, the injured creature hid away. Its bloody trail led back up the tower staircase, like it was doing some deranged hide and seek loop, always returning to previous locations. The man climbed once again. He stuck his blade into a Shambler that had managed to crawl its way through a gap in the wall. The others outside dispersed, eager to remain in the shadows. They spied even so, knowing that with the right timing and the right numbers, the man stood no chance of escaping. At the top, he scanned the room. The blue blood led right back to where he had originally found the creature. Behind the boxes, he could hear it whimper. -> POST ACTION: TECH-F vs Shambler 1-4 Spoiler ID239451 | bd1 | 25*12 = 300 DMG -> Shambler 1 ID239452 | bd5 | 25*12 = 300 DMG -> Shambler 2 ID239453 | bd1 | 25*12 = 300 DMG -> Shambler 3 ID239454 | bd7 | 25+16*12 = 492 DMG -> Shambler 4 EN: -16 Morningstar | HP: 840/840 | EN: 92/120 | DMG: 25 | EVA: 4 | ACC: 5 | BH: 43 | LD: 6 | REC: 8 | FLN: 16 | AA | PARA-V Shambler 1 | HP: 0/600 | DMG: 136 Shambler 2 | HP: 0/600 | DMG: 136 Shambler 3 | HP: 0/600 | DMG: 136 Shambler 4 | HP: 0/600 | DMG: 136 -> LOOTING: Shambler 1-4 Spoiler ID239455 | ld7+6 | cd6 ID239456 | ld2+6 | cd11 ID239457 | ld12+6 | cd5 ID239458 | ld10+6 | cd5 Col: 19800 Materials: 8 [239458a] T1 Perfect Armor/Shield [239458b] T1 Perfect Trinket [239457a] T1 Rare Consumable [239457b] T1 Rare Armor/Shield [239456a] T1 Rare Trinket [239455a] T1 Rare Weapon [239455b] T1 Uncommon Consumable
