Captured

Captured. It had the name of being an interesting quest, at the very least. Morrígan couldn’t help but think that the title was a forewarning of the events to occur, should she take up the quest itself – although she hadn’t quite yet decided upon it, as she browsed through the small list of those available to her. She’d noticed that the list was ever changing, adjustments for new inclusions, old removals, and an assortment of timed events that seemed to appear and disappear as her time within Aincrad extended.

’The Search for the Hoya could be interesting as well, although a bit dangerous…perhaps that would be best saved for later on?’ Phantom, seated across from her atop the chair’s backing, gave a small caw of agreement as she eyed up the crackers on the plate before her. Morrígan had taken to eating breakfast with the raven, placing plate and treat upon its surface in an attempt to set some form of decorum or reminder of what life could be like. It was foolish, perhaps, but it reminded her of a part of her life that she’d been missing out on, until recently.

Morrígan closed out the menu, knowing that at this point she was simply scrolling through it without any real purpose, or determination set before her. The singular quest that she had pointed out had, in her mind, the only prospect of being one that she could complete on her own at this time. Although she may have desired calling upon another player for help, she knew that right now she wasn’t aware of anyone else who would be capable of assisting her with something beyond the most basics.

’Well, except Freyd. He’s otherwise occupied, however.’ Morrígan assumed as much, at least. The player was Captain of a guild, which meant that he had responsibilities that would hold him from helping out with the lower level quests – quests which were well within her grasp to find more up and coming players to assist with. If anything, it would be better for her to show her initiative, find a group to complete the search with, and then perhaps return to Freyd with an announcement of her achievement.

’Captured.’ She repeated the singular word, letting it sit on tongue and mind as she considered whether she was ready for such a quest. It was certainly tougher than anything she’d previously undertaken, but that didn’t necessarily mean it was outside of her capabilities. A quick glance, followed by a shrug, at Phantom settled the debate within her mind. ’Alright, let’s do it then. Captured.’

Issela was, without a doubt, the most talkative person that Morrígan had ever seen going through a crisis. She’d found the woman shortly after her arrival on the floor, walking through a few of the settlement’s small streets before bumping into the woman almost entirely by accident. She’d immediately launched into a tale about the woes she’d been facing; her son stolen away from her, held for ransom and the entirety of the world-ending situation that had befallen her in consequence.

’I cannae pay them what they want! Please, you must help mae!’ Morrígan shifted on the spot, waiting for the woman to ask the question that would initiate the quest, only to slowly realise that it had finally occurred. Nodding her ascent to the request, she pressed the button on the pop-up that confirmed her engagement, before turning to look at the woman once more.

’I’ll see if I can find him.’ The promise was short, not offering any confirmation that she’d bring him home alive, or in a single piece. She didn’t doubt that she’d be able to do so – in fact, the quest seemed to suggest that it was possible to begin with – but she knew better than to make hollow promises that couldn’t be upheld. Turning on her heel, she left the mother behind and made her way towards the outskirts of the town, and the destination in the distance that would be her starting point in locating the boy.

Above her, Phantom circled as she moved through the relatively empty side streets. The raven had been excited at the prospect of being free in the sky once more, and had taken to the air almost as soon as they’d arrived and stepped off the teleporter pad. Morrígan had watched with a subtle feeling inside her of content, as the raven took flight. Their bond had only grown in the days following their connection, and she wondered if Phantom felt the same. You could enquire. She filed it away for later, once they had completed the quest. In the distance, she could’ve sworn she heard as Issela accosted another passing player, demanding they save her son from world-ending horrors.

The forest surrounding the town was peaceful. Morrígan had bypassed the majority of the creatures that were threatening in nature, putting down only a few that were too difficult to bypass, or caught her by surprise. Most of the creatures on the third were well below a level of concern for the redhead, but she was cautious nonetheless; she’d seen far too many times what happened when a player became complacent with their own skill and capability, let alone their limitations.

Morrígan jumped as another soft growl signified the arrival of a creature. She brought the halberd in her hand into a ready position, her eyes casting about even as Phantom landed on a nearby branch, cawing in the direction to her left. She spied the mountain lion with Phantom’s assistance, looking it over as she sighed to herself. They had been increasing in appearance the further along she went, and she found that her desire to skirt around them was being trumped by their own desire to hunt her down.

’Alright, if there’s nothing left for it, let’s do this.’ She shifted her weight onto her back leg, preparing to meet the coming leap of the mountain lion that they all started off with; as if it was some signature move that began the battle for them. Morrígan carefully braced the haft into the ground, just enough that it would be able to handle the sudden weight of the creature upon its tip, but not so much as to inhibit its continued movement.

The mountain lion didn’t disappoint her, leaping towards her and impaling itself on her waiting halberd, only to be tossed aside as Morrígan shifted around to face it. Phantom had fallen silent as the fight began, allowing the redhead to focus on the danger before her. The mountain lion had hit the dirt hard, colliding with a nearby tree and falling limp for a moment as the impact jolted it. When it rose, it shook itself harshly, as if trying to shake off a collection of dust that seemed to have covered its fur. Morrígan eyed the thing closely, noticing the lack of damage that her strike had done – just before noticing the red marker above the creature, signifying the danger it presented to herself.

She’d felt a moment of fear as she realised the impact of her revelation, before she’d calmed herself down. She knew that although the thing was dangerous, its movements and capabilities were linear – at least so far – with the others she’d faced. She could likely wear the thing down, if she was careful. Sliding into another ready stance, she positioned the halberd to lash out, readying to drive the thing back as it tried to sneak forward below her weapon.

Any thought of doing so, however, was halted as another mountain lion appeared, this one purring with an intensity that seemed excited in a way that was anything but good for Morrígan. Above her, Phantom had already shifted on the spot, knowing that things had turned poorly for the fighter below. Morrígan didn’t need to say a word, simply turning and disengaging from the fight as she ran through the woods, spotting the form of Phantom passing above as the raven took flight and tried to lead her to safety.

The mad dash through the woodlands had gone on for only a few moments before Phantom had pulled up short, cawing in alarm at something that Morrígan couldn’t see. Something that made itself known only as the ground gave way beneath her; the pit trap swallowing her hole. She had only a brief moment to be surprised, before the forms of the mountain lions soared overhead, oblivious to the fact that their prey had fallen into the ground below, intent only on tracking her down.

She waited for a time, ensuring that they didn’t circle back around, before beginning to look for some way out of the hole she’d found herself within. The dimness gave way slowly as the walls around her form into existence; walls that were crafted by hand, rather than the wear of nature. Morrígan’s eyes stopped as they came across metal bars on one wall, a form that was obvious in design and yet surprising in nature here. That’s a door, not a wall. A door to a cell, no less.

A quick push against the door had confirmed that it wasn’t locked – either her arrival hadn’t been expected, or the jailor had simply failed in the most basic of tasks when it came to entrapment. Morrígan had quickly glanced about, seeing similar cells lining the walls on either side of a short hallway. Curiosity getting the better of her, she’d passed across to the opposite cell, peering in and seeing a form sitting on the ground, clearly awake but staring into the distance as if disconnected or disassociated with the reality around them.

’Kagamine?’ She hissed the name, one of the few things of usefulness that she’d been able to coax out of the mother who had sent her on this quest. The form’s head had snapped up suddenly, alert and aware as it gazed at the cell door, clearly trying to gauge what was happening.

’Who are you?’ The voice was juvenile, clearly trying to be more confident than it was. The shake behind the words, barely audible in an attempt to hide it, was the only thing that confirmed to Morrígan that the individual within the cage was at all scared for their life.

’My name is Morrígan, and I’ve come to return you to your mother.’ She glanced around the area, looking for any sign of a set of keys that could be used in order to prop open the cell door. Although there was no sign of the keys used to unlock the door itself, she spotted a nearby broadsword hanging on a rack. Collecting the item, she placed it against the door’s lower edge, leaning into it slightly before looking up at the boy within the cell. ’This is going to make some noise, if it works. Be ready to run.’

She gave a heave on the door, pulling it upwards and outwards slightly as the thing protested loudly. It took a few seconds of pushing her weight into it before the hinges came loose, letting the metal door collapse to the ground with an echoing boom – a clear sign of something happening, and their further cue to leave the area entirely. The boy moved quickly, falling in behind her and going to collect the broadsword from the ground. She considered stopping him, before realising it may not be a horrible idea to have him armed with something.

’Follow me. If we come across any sort of guards, leave them to me. Keep that on you just in case, though.’ She gave a single glance down both sides of the hallway, before heading off to her left. She’d spotted a staircase lifting away into the darkness, and with nothing better to go on figured it would be the most plausible starting point.

They made it almost halfway down the hallway before the sound of voices could be heard. Morrígan found the echoing way they bounced made it impossible to locate exactly where they were coming from, and without much to go on she continued to push them towards the stairway, hoping that they’d be able to make it up and beyond before anyone could stop them. That hope disappeared however, as the first body stepped from the stairway and into their direct path, causing her to pull up short as their way was blocked.

Morrígan’s first strike caught the armoured individual in the shoulder, driving the body into a frantic spin as it was forced away from her and around in a circle. The assault, however, didn’t inhibit or halt the individual as they pressed forward and into her space, driving her back with blows that tore into the chestpiece she wore, slowly draining her health as she stepped back and away from the individual.

She was thankful, for the moment, that only a single individual had responded to the noise. She’d barely tore down his own health, but received a punishment in return – and she knew that if there were more, she’d be in danger. Still, she wasn’t ready to back down and instead found herself retreating in a tactful manner, ensuring that Kagamine remained behind her and safely out of reach of the guard who was now pressing his attack against Morrígan’s shield. She could feel the impact of blade upon metal, the jarring running up her arm and causing minor discomfort as it began to turn numb from the beating.

’No matter what happens, keep myself between this guard and you, understand?’ She spoke through gritted teeth, waiting for an opportunity to lash out with the shield and drive the man back far enough that she could bring the halberd to bear on him. She barely caught the muttered agreement from the boy behind her as the form before her lunged forward, Morrígan shifting to meet the onslaught once more as she drove the shield out from herself in an attempt to knock the guard off balance.

The continuous berating of her shield had taken a pause, and Morrígan took the single instant as a chance to press an attack of her own. She lashed out with the shield, driving the bandit guard backwards and off balance, before bringing her halberd down and around; driving the axe blade into the individual’s shoulder before pulling it back out and putting more distance between him and herself. She could feel the motion of Kagamine behind her, stumbling to stay out of her way while also keeping close enough to not make himself a target – not that Morrígan felt the need to worry about that now.

The bandit guard had turned his eyes upon her fully, the gash in his shoulder signifying that he had been badly wounded by her latest attack. A growl escaped his lips as he repositioned the blade in his hand, changing it to the other in order to have a better grasp on it. Morrígan didn’t doubt that the fight was almost over, although she also knew it would be dangerous to assume she was in the clear now. One small slip up, and she could be marking her final moments in Aincrad in the basement of some keep on the lower floors.

’Alright. I’m going to rush him, try and finish this right here and now. Stay alongside me, we’ll push past once he’s down.’ She felt the shifting motion of Kagamine as the boy moved slightly closer, the broadsword still in his hands but hanging limply as if he’d forgotten all about it. Morrígan wasn’t necessarily upset about that, his engagement in the fight would only endanger his life, and she doubted that would be beneficial for either of them.

Morrígan had leapt forward, driving the halberd’s tip into the bandit guard’s gut, tearing away any finality that he had in him before exploding into nothingness. She didn’t wait for the shards to finish falling before racing forwards once more, heading for the stairway even as she glanced back to ensure the boy was behind her. Although she didn’t want to give unnecessary credit, she was surprised to see him following with broadsword in hand, his gait keeping in step with her own, his tall legs allowing him all the speed he needed to remain beside her as they cleared the final stretch of the hallway.

’Follow me.’ She turned to head up the stairs, realising almost instantly that her halberd would be too big and bulky for the area, a quick curse escaping her as she tried to come to some solution. She knew that the tight space would be the downfall of such a large weapon; but there was no choice beyond continuing upwards and hoping that she would be able to make it back into wide open spaces once more. Perhaps I should consider a smaller weapon, better suited for closer combat…

She shrugged off the idea, knowing that it would do her no good right now. She’d chosen her weapon based upon her familiarity with it, and the representation it provided. Besides, she was sure she could pick up a secondary weapon at some point if she kept her eye out for one. It might not be a bad idea…

Their dive through the hallway and up the stairwell ended in a state of calmness that somehow felt more concerning to Morrígan than anything else that could’ve met them. She’d expected to burst into some hiding place of the bandits who had captured the boy, facing down as a group of them encircled her with the intent of bringing her to her final moments. Instead, they had found themselves walking into a clearly empty room of the keep, with three doorways leading deeper into the castle before them.

’We’re…safe now?’ Kagamine seemed to sigh the words out as he plunked down slightly onto a nearby bench. Morrígan considered forcing the boy to his feet again, but came to the realisation that it might be best for them to take a moment to recover from the earlier ordeal. If she had learnt anything, rushing forwards wasn’t always the best choice, especially after just coming out of a dangerous conflict.

’Not safe, not yet. But we can take a few moments to relax here. I need to recover for a moment anyways.’ She considered speeding up the process by using some of the items she’d brought along with her, but ended up simply sitting next to the boy and resting the halberd against the wall, content to relax as long as she could safely do so. ’I think we’re almost out of here, at least.’

Her words were more hopeful than she would’ve liked them to sound. She knew that there was still an entire castle to make their way through, and the numerous dangers within and beyond meant that they would most likely run into some more of the bandits before they’d fully escaped. Still, she was further along with the quest than she’d expected to be at this point, which meant that she was already halfway there.

Her thoughts were interrupted as the door on their left slammed open, a pair of bandit guards rushing in with weapons drawn and a determination to their step that informed Morrígan that they were the response to their sudden jail break. She had just enough time to grab her halberd and force herself to her feet before the pair noticed her, turning to circle even as she gave Kagamine a soft push to force him to his feet.

’This is going to be dangerous. You head back down the stairs a bit, keep an eye out and make sure no other guards are coming up behind us. Think you can do that?’ She spoke softly, just loud enough that he’d be able to hear. She wasn’t sure if the bandits had some way of communicating with others, or if these two had simply stumbled upon them by accident, but she wasn’t taking any chances.

’Yeah…yeah I can do that.’ She could sense the fear in his voice, knowing that he was likely terrified at everything happening. Still, he moved without too much hesitation, heading back down the stairs a few steps to ensure he’d be able to forewarn Morrígan about any approaching dangers that she couldn’t immediately see.

She turned her attention back to the pair before her, eyeing them up as they slowly approached. She knew that she could easily swipe at both of them, but the issue would be keeping them at bay long enough for her to survive their counter attacks. She thought back to how difficult the first one had been, and realised that she may be in serious danger now that she faced a pair of them together. Gritting her teeth and tightening her grip on the halberd, she waited patiently for them to make the first move.

Morrígan moved the instant she saw a twitch from one of the two bandit guards, launching forward and bringing her halberd around in a strong swiping motion that caught the left most bandit by surprise, slamming into his side and cutting deeply into his chest. At the same time, the second individual moved to intercept the opening that Morrígan had left, and she found herself dropping the halberd’s haft and slamming the shield directly into the side of the bandit’s face, forcing it to snap backwards and paralysing the individual at the same time.

She quickly collected her halberd before retreating a few steps, watching as the bandits shook off the brunt of her assault, their daze at her brutality keeping them from immediately following after her in any form of counter attack. She took the brief respite she had in order to collect herself, before dashing forwards once more. She unleashed a torrent of stabs, slashes and parries that kept them from being able to fully recuperate. She knew that if she kept the initiative against them, she’d have a better chance of survival.

She felt a sudden shift in the fight as she brought around her halberd once more, slamming it against the side of the sword that had been brought up to defend against her attack. Morrígan could see the two bandits faltering, if only slightly, in their stance. She knew that if she pressed her attack now, she would gain the advantage even more. Putting caution aside from a single moment, she drove into their midst slightly, stabbing with the halberd to force them closer together in the hopes of slamming the halberd into both at once with a devastating attack.

Abrasiveness had cost her, and as Morrígan stepped back from the pair of bandits before her, she knew suddenly that the simple fight was quickly going to become anything but that. She’d seen the flash as her own health had quickly depleted, both of her opponents still standing before her – although she could see that at least one of them was almost at a point where it could be put down permanently. At least, assuming Morrígan didn’t somehow trip and stumble her way into a quick grave and early ending.

I’m okay. Just focus on breathing and keeping yourself alive, and you’ll be okay. Just need to bring down one of them, and then this will be…easier. She couldn’t lie to herself, she was still in danger. Even though she’d managed to tear through them as quickly and easily had she had thus far, she knew that there was still a long ways to go – and there were more of the bandits within the castle; voices echoing off walls in the distance only confirmed that for her. Thankfully, at least up to this point, they hadn’t come any closer to where the fight was being held.

’I hear voices!’ Kagamine’s call did nothing to alleviate Morrígan’s concern as she realised that time was beginning to turn against them. They couldn’t continue to remain her, waiting for other bandits to arrive and entirely overwhelm them. She needed to act now, to break out and through the bandits’ defences, and bring them into some sort of safety away from the dangers they were facing currently. Without any other options, Morrígan took a step forward and brought her halberd down, holding it in a stance designed for stabbing. Her right hand grasped the upper haft, holding it steady as she prepared to rush forward once more and attempt to overwhelm their defences in a last ditch effort that felt almost suicidal in nature.

A single slip, that was all it would take for her to overcome the bandit and find the final strike that would allow her to slip past the defences of the bandit. Morrígan knew that she was cutting it close, the whistle of the bandit’s blade over her head was the only reminder she needed of just how close she was to losing her life. Steel slammed into steel, the impact driving vibrations up her arm that left her feeling more than a moment of concern.

This one is much stronger than the others. Much more dangerous. Come on…come on I can defeat him! The words were almost a plea in her mind, a desperate desire to find some small edge that would give her the upper hand in the fight. Her eyes moved franticly as she moved the polearm around before her, bringing the axe blade up to stop a downward strike, before stabbing outwards and trying to drive the bandit backwards. She could feel her brow furrowing more and more as the energy seeped from her, the exhaustion of the continuous fight draining her almost as much as the previous attacks had. She wasn’t ready to give up, however, not yet. Not when she still had a promise to fulfill.

’I can help!’ The words seemed to shatter something within her as the boy leapt forwards, driving his blade up towards the bandit in a desperate attempt that was little more than a minor diversion in his attacks. Morrígan barely had time to register the invasion of her charge, before the form was launched across the room, slamming into the wall before collapsing to the ground. A pitiful whine was the only sound that confirmed the boy was not dead yet, but it was enough for Morrígan.

’You will not harm him!’ She brought her shield up and around, slamming it into the descending blade and driving it backwards, opening a position that she knew she could take advantage of, if she’d only been able to slide around properly. She shifted her feet, trying to get a better standing on the ground beneath her; her first mistake. She felt the cobblestone beneath shift ever so slightly, her balance going off as it gave way and collapsed into itself. Her hands released slightly on the halberd, and a surprise backhanded attack from the bandit launched the weapon from her hand.

She heard as it clattered nearby, bouncing off the cobblestone with a ringing sound that seemed to toll similar to a bell. She placed her right hand against her shield, bracing herself as she felt the impact of the bandit’s sword slam into it. He’d given up all form in favour of pure brutality, knowing that she was in a position that gave no benefit to her. Morrígan’s mind whirled as she tried to devise a plan, her legs already beginning to shake from exhaustion and fear. This isn’t how I die. Her arms shook as she held against the blows, feeling as the impact roiled through her entire form. Just over the edge of the metal she could see the crazed eyes of the bandit, staring at her with an insanity that bespoke violence in living form. Except, it was blank of emotion. There was no drive, no desire. There was only pre-determined action. A coldness that seemed to wash over Morrígan as suddenly as it was seen.

’Kagamine. Run.’ She breathed the words, not screaming or yelling, not crying or whining. The shield dropped suddenly, shifting to the side to force the blade down. She brought the protective metal back up, preparing to slam it into the bandit’s face – and yet her arm wouldn’t move.

She didn’t look down. She knew what she would see. Instead she forced her gaze upwards, ignoring the alarm chiming in her ears. At least…at least I decided this. At least this was my choice…not another’s. No whimper or whine came; no scream of pain, or fear, or frustration. Only silence swept through the area where Morrígan had once stood, the shards glittering softly as they sailed towards the ground, nothing more than a memory left to be brushed aside by the winds of fate...
