Into the Fire: Guardian of the Fire

Nymoria’s eyes passed over the flowing river of molten fire and red liquid, a calm reminder that the floor was anything but welcoming to those not used to warmer climates. Warmer being a very casual way of saying far too hot for the average person to comfortably survive. And yet, Nymoria found herself skimming along the rock covered pathways leading through, over and around the various rivers of molten slag that flowed calmly, as if normal to exist in such an all encompassing way. Musei had long since disappeared into the pack upon her back, disliking the heat more than Nymoria herself did; his fur causing the weasel to swelter and melt the moment he came into contact with the floor.

I remember now why I disliked this floor. Why did I bother returning? Her face slipped into a scowl as she strode forward, heading in the direction of the mountain she had originally climbed when she’d first done the quest. She’d returned for the second part – facing Cerberus once more in order to obtain the attack skill that it provided; a flame inducing ability to left a scorching mark upon whatever it contacted. Or so the stories went. What little Nymoria had seen of the skill wasn’t overly impressive, but it was enough of a boost in damage that it would benefit her to complete the quest and obtain the reward itself.

Why do they always live at the top of mountains…? She’d paused in her trek, wiping away the sweat and thinking to herself how annoying it was to have to climb up the hillside in order to just begin the quest. She’d barely arrived on the floor, and already she was exhausted from the impact of the heat, and the effort it took to do anything physical on the floor itself. She still had a ways to go, and as she glanced up at the small settlement atop the upper half of the hill, she growled once more to herself. I bet they find some immense pleasure in all of this. Knowing that complaining wouldn’t get her anywhere, Nymoria forced herself back into movement, determined to at least make it to the gates of the settlement before she took her next rest.

A small gaggle of individuals where standing before the form of the injured broker, each attempting to get the quest started in a vaguely desperate flow of movement, sounds and waving arms. Nymoria looked away, avoiding the noise as easily as she did breathing, and waited for the area of chaos to subside slightly. She knew it would take some time, but she was content to await the completion of the others, before making her own approach to the broker. I’ve got a few moments, it’s not like I have anything else planned for today. Sit back, relax, let them get to it first. You can wait.

She settled against a nearby wall, her hand naturally resting atop the pommel of the pink-wrapped hilt of her sabre, the weapon clearly well-crafted and something beyond what a player would start the game with. It was the only sign of Nymoria’s combative capabilities; her outfit of white blouse and blue bow around her neck, checkered skirt and black leggings providing more of a schoolgirl appearance than that of a fighter. Her eyes moved across the room, taking everything in, in a way that bespoke of one consistently on the lookout for danger, regardless of their current placement within a safe zone. Content with her position, she waited for the bauble to die down slightly, a small weasel’s face appearing upon her shoulder as Musei came to investigate their newfound location in curiosity and concern.

This very well might be Hell.

Astra wiped beads of sweat from his brow as he traversed the craggy pathways of Floor 9, heading towards the settlement on top of the cliffs in front of him. This was his first time on the volcanic floor, and he certainly felt like the setting was anything but welcoming. Molten lava sifted through cracks in the rocks, below him were pools of magma bubbling and seemingly ready to burst. The sky was seemingly stuck in a perpetual state of red and black, and it was hot. Far too hot. If the freezing cold could chill your bones, then the heat of this floor would melt them.

"I'm definitely not dressed for this place," Astra murmured between breaths that could seem akin to a pant. The young man with his messy white hair was dressed in his usual adventuring attire: A slightly armored white coat, adorned with a thin blue check pattern, layered over a white turtleneck. On top of his head was a metal headband of sorts, and his lower half was fitted with slim black pants and a pair of lightly armored boots. Layering a light coat over a turtleneck was a bold choice here on Floor 9, and anyone who gazed upon the novice swordsman could only imagine how truly damp he was underneath his clothing.

Astra found himself in this molten hellscape due to some rumors he had heard. Through the grapevine of info-brokers and other players, he had heard that if you took on the three-headed floor boss, Cerberus, you could unlock an attack skill that would invoke flame and inflict burn. Something like that was enticing to Astra, who was still very early on his journey of making his way to the frontlines. Any sort of advantage in battle could be the difference between life or death, and he wanted to be prepared for everything. On top of that, getting to explore new floors was also a bonus to him. Who didn't love a good adventure in a new place?

Eventually Astra had made his way to the gates of the settlement on top of the hill, Knorlit village. The smell of sulfur wafted through the air, and the sound of distant metalworking filled Astra's ears. Now it was just a matter of finding the NPC who would give him the quest, which shouldn't be too hard. After wandering around the streets of the village for a bit, Astra came upon what looked like an injured info-broker, surrounded by some players who were most likely trying to start the quest. Trying to make his way over and talk to the NPC right now seemed futile, as the swarm seemed to be taking all of his attention. Astra turned his view to the nearby wall, where he noticed another player who seemed to be patiently waiting for their chance to the start the quest. Taking a note from their book, he decided he would wait his turn as well, and made his way to the wall, where he stood near the other player.

He looked over to the player, who appeared to be dressed more like a student than an armor-clad adventurer like the other players. "Are you looking to start the Cerberus quest too? You can go before me, you were here first," he said with a slight smile, still warm in nature

Nymoria watched the newcomer, a late arrival who was clearly interested in the quest itself. From his appearance, he was far overdressed for the environment, and as he stumbled towards her and the wall, Nymoria found her couldn’t help but wonder if he wasn’t waiting his turn because he was about to collapse from exhaustion. Her eyes shifted as he began speaking, however, locking onto his facial features to better hear the words that other player spoke.

Thank you. I have already finished the first part of the quest, though. You can go first. She signed quickly, the words auto-translating into the other player’s head as Cardinal did for her form of communication. She’d never bothered to ask how others heard her, although some had mentioned an almost monotone like voice with a hint of feminine nature to it. She imagined it was likely similar to early renditions of artificial voices; not that she’d ever heard any of them truthfully.

Her thoughts were interrupted as she glanced again over the other’s form, noticing again how overdressed he was in the environment. She shifted on the spot, bringing her hands up again as she signed out the words that had developed in her mind. Are you okay? You look a little warm. Are you going to faint?

There was a measure of concern on her face as she took in the other’s appearance, and as soon as she’d finished signing her hands had shifted down and outward slightly, as if waiting to catch the other player should they suddenly lose the ability to stand on their own two feet. Nymoria herself was warm, but based upon what the other player was wearing, she couldn’t help but think that they’d made a terrible choice in their wardrobe for this floor.

Perhaps you should remove some of those layers? Too much clothing is bad. This floor is too hot. She waved around herself to signify the entire environment around them, a look of concern upon her face. The individual’s choice in clothing, paired with their mention of interest in the quest itself made her suddenly worry for their safety, and she found the words flowing from her moving fingers before she’d considered them entirely. If you are taking the quest for Cerberus, perhaps I should come with you. To ensure you are safe.

Astra watched as the player he was speaking with communicated back with him via sign language. Even with her signing her words, Astra could still hear a voice in his head, thanks to Cardinal's translation system. He was thankful for this, as he really only knew how to sign a few words, even though it was something he had always wanted to learn. He couldn't help but marvel at the capabilities of the Cardinal's translation system. This world could be full of hardship and strife, but new experiences were always aplenty, and for that Astra was grateful.

When the player had expressed their concern over Astra's current state, he couldn't help but look down at himself. Do I really look that bad? I don't think I'm gonna faint, but it is boiling here. Astra took a moment to wipe some more sweat from his forehead, and take a breath. The player was right, it was too hot here, and he was pretty overdressed for the environment. Perhaps having a turtleneck layered under a coat, as well as long pants, wasn't a good idea for this floor. Astra felt a tinge embarrassed at his current state, especially if it led to concern, but as time passed and he became more acclimated he felt like he could push through. "Oh, thanks for your concern! I'll be okay though, just a bit sweaty is all," he said as he rolled up his long sleeves. It wasn't much of a change, but it did help a little bit.

Astra's eyes lit up when the player had communicated that they should accompany him on the quest. Going into this quest he was already feeling a bit apprehensive over taking it on alone. Not to mention there was safety in numbers, and this could be a chance to make a new friend or form a new bond. He couldn't help but feel thankful that someone was kind enough to be offering their help. Other players may look at his low level and laugh, leaving him to potentially be obliterated by whatever mobs would be in front of him. "Sure! I'd love to work together. I'll do my best to have your back as well. I'm Astra, by the way. It's nice to meet you!"

With that, the crowd around the quest-giver seemingly disappeared to their duties, so Astra made his way over to the broker. The injured broker spoke of the hellhound Cerberus, who was rumored to be posted up in a location known as the Inferno Cavern. The broker had relayed that this beast was fearsome, and that anyone who dared to venture to the caverns should tread lightly. Astra accepted the quest as it appeared on his display, and returned to the player with whom he was now working with.

"Alright, so it looks like we have to head to the Inferno Cavern. Sounds like it'll be pretty dangerous. Are you ready to head out?"

Nymoria waited as the player spoke with the injured broker, obtaining what little information the man had to provide about the quest – or, as much as he had to provide, she realised. Once Astra had finished and returned to her, she took it upon herself to complete the introductions that had been initialised, but interrupted through the other’s excitement to begin.

My name is Nymoria. It is a pleasure to meet you, Astra. She gave a shallow bow in greeting, her expression and demeanour entirely formal as she was taught to present oneself when first greeting a new individual. She gave a nod once she was done, relaxing ever so slightly and glancing towards the small gateway that led out of the village and into the world beyond. She saw no reason to remain where they were, with the quest and information obtained. Just before heading out, she opened her menu and guided herself to the party request option, sending a notification to the other. A formal request, so that I can complete the quest with you.

Turning towards the pathway leading out of the village, she began walking. She stopped only long enough to ensure that the other player was following, before continuing upon the path leading back down the hillside. The heat washed over her, and she threw another concerned glance towards the overly dressed player at her side. Are you sure you do not want to remove some of the clothing? You are wearing too much. If you faint in front of Cerberus it will make fighting it harder.

She didn’t mention the fact that she could likely face Cerberus alone, without worry – in fact, she’d been planning on facing the larger of the creature’s forms alone. Still, she didn’t want to have to worry about the other player’s health while they were making their way towards the den of Cerberus; it would be painful were they to collapse along the way and require some sort of assistance, or other help, because they were wearing too much clothing.

Compromise and remove the sweater? Or the coat and the sweater? A simple shirt would suffice here. She smiled, in an attempt to make the other player more comfortable, hoping that it would convince them.

As Nymoria bowed during her introduction, Astra followed in suit by offering a small shallow bow in return. He wasn't entirely sure if it was proper etiquette, as most of the time he would wave at someone when greeting them, but figured that it wouldn't hurt to try. The last thing he wanted was to potentially offend his new companion. "Nymoria, that's a really nice name. It suits you well!" The snow haired young man couldn't help but compliment her chosen name, and wondered if it had any relation to their name on the outside world as well. Astra often found himself pondering people's chosen usernames, and generally felt like everyone did a good job of picking something that suited them. Growing up he was taught that a name could carry a certain weight to it. He knew that his chosen name in Aincrad was special to him, so perhaps Nymoria's had a special meaning to her as well. When Nymoria's party request appeared in front of him, Astra quickly accepted the request with a nod and a smile.

The new companions made their way through the gates of the village and back out into the volcanic expanse of Floor 9. Though it had not gotten any cooler, Astra found that the more time he spent he was getting acclimated to the environment. The heat was still brutal, but he was able to accept their situation and move forward without feeling like he was going to melt, or combust. As Nymoria had reiterated her concern over his clothing, Astra couldn't help but smile slightly. It was kind that she had some concern over his wellbeing, or at least that's what he chose to believe it was. "No need to worry, I'll be okay. I feel like I'm already getting used to the heat here. Plus," he said tugging on his coat, "these clothes are actually lighter and thinner than you'd think." He paused for a moment as he imagined the dangers of fainting from overheating, especially in front of Cerberus. "I guess I could strip if it came down to it, but I think I'll manage! Promise I won't slow you down."

Astra could tell from Nymoria's level and stats that she was going to be doing most of the damage to the hellhound. He'd yet to see her fighting style, but could imagine that she'd be an adept fighter. Astra on the other hand was still a low level, despite his experiences in Aincrad so far. He didn't want to slow her down or be a burden, so he'd just have to give his all in the fight ahead of them. He knew that he'd have to rely on Nymoria a lot soon, but he hoped that he could at least contribute somewhat.

Nymoria's request at compromise regarding his outfit did catch him off guard slightly. He didn't expect the smile that she delivered, as generally she seemed very formal and almost stoic at times. "I suppose I could remove a layer, even if I am more comfortable in the whole ensemble. Probably should've brought another outfit, but these are my general adventuring clothes and armor." Astra tapped at his menu, and not long after his lightly armored coat had disappeared, leaving him in just a plain turtleneck for a top. "Here we go. Better now?" He asked, giving a thumbs up to his companion.

It took a while, and a fair bit of convincing, but as the jacket disappeared from the other player’s body and left them in only the turtleneck, Nymoria felt a small measure of contentedness at her success. They were still well overdressed, but at least in the moment they appeared to be slightly better off. It was as much as she was going to get out of them, clearly and she decided that it would have to do.

A bit better. Thank you. She gave a small bow of her head in respect, before turning back towards the pathway they had been taking. There was still a short walk towards the tunnels that would lead to Cerberus’s lair; tunnels that she had discovered the last time she had visited the floor for this quest. She decided to fill in the other player as they went, to make it easier for them to react to what was about to occur.

I am not sure how familiar you are with this quest. We will face three of the guardians of Cerberus’s layer. Hellhounds. She paused, making sure the other was paying attention before she continued onwards with her explanation. She was pulling as much as she could from her memory, and although she knew it wouldn’t be entirely accurate – quests changed, constantly, after all – she figured it would at least provide them a basis to go off of in the interim. There will be a group of them. Once we defeat them, we can go into Cerberus’s lair itself. The Hellhounds are not too difficult. I should be able to defeat them quickly, I think.

She realised that it likely sounded overly confident, possibly cocky in an accidental way. She was quick to add to her original commentary, trying to overcome any pre-conceived opinions that the other player might develop from her speech. I have levelled up enough to handle them, is all that I mean. They can still be dangerous. We should be careful.

She wasn’t sure if it made her appear any better, but as the words slipped beyond her fingertips, she couldn’t pull them back. Determined to right herself and get back on track, she returned to reiterating what information she had to share. Cerberus itself is a three headed dog. The heads are all individuals, and act by themselves. We just need to be careful not to get distracted, otherwise you might get attacked by one while focusing on another. Hopefully I can keep their attention.

She gave another soft smile at the end of her sentence, hoping that it would put the other player at ease. She knew that Cerberus itself could be terrifying the first time it was seen, but she wanted to assure the player that they were safe – Nymoria knew that she could likely handle the boss quickly, and bring about an end to their suffering in the heat of this floor. At least, that was what she hoped. Just in case, don’t do anything foolish. Keep moving, keep safe. Got it?

Astra felt content that Nymoria was a bit more at ease with his outfit after he took the coat off. Anything to ease the mind of his companion would be helpful, as he didn't want to distract her while they were focusing on the task at hand. After all, there would be some battling coming up for them, and it would already be hard enough for Astra to stay safe at his current low level.

When Nymoria was laying out the outline for the quest, Astra nodded along as he listened. Three hellhounds on the way to Cerberus, got it. Astra wondered if even those hellhounds could do significant damage to him, and how dangerous just the guardians alone would be. He'd have to make sure he stayed on his toes, and did his best not to draw too much aggro from any enemy. Nymoria's reassurance that she could defeat the hellhounds quickly had put Astra's mind at ease. She was clearly experienced in this quest, and her level and abilities were most likely nothing to scoff at either. "I'll do my best to help with them, too. Though, I'll probably have to focus on avoiding death." No matter how high or low your level, anything could be a danger in Aincrad. If Astra was going to go out before the game was cleared, he had at least hoped it would be on the frontlines, doing his best to assist others. Dying to hellhounds or Cerberus due to being overzealous would be pretty disappointing, especially considering he wouldn't be able to contribute too much anyways.

"So Cerberus is just like the mythological creature, that makes sense. I'll do my best to stay focused and help you out where I can. I'd like to apologize in advance if I won't be the most helpful, though. I appreciate you looking after me in this quest." Fighting an oversized dog from hell would be a pretty daunting task, but it appeared that Nymoria would be more than capable of handling the brunt of the fighting. Astra would do his best to help out and chip away some damage while he could, while being careful not to draw too much attention to himself.

With her last bit of advice to him, Astra gave Nymoria a confident smile and a thumbs up. "Right. Keep moving, keep safe. I'll do my best!" In the end, his best attempts to stay alive and assist were all he could offer. He couldn't help but think that one day he'd like to pay Nymoria back in kind, when he was stronger and more capable.

The player seemed to get her point, repeating the instructions back as they seemed to work over the situation within their mind. Nymoria could see an understanding, and a measure of intellect behind the player’s thoughts; she had little concern that they would be anything to worry about in this moment.

So long as I can take down the hellhounds quickly, this will be easy… She didn’t like the small measure of doubt that had entered her mind, and decided to turn away from the thoughts and focus on the present. Her eyes turned towards her companion player, wondering how she could continue to engage them now that they were essentially set for the quest’s coming challenges. She found herself oddly mute for a few moments as she walked in silence, considering what to say to break the quiet that had fallen between them.

Have you…done many quests? It was a ridiculous question to ask, especially as they entered the underground tunnels that would lead towards Cerberus’ eventual cavern lair, and conflict. She was about to try and cover up the stupid question, her hands raising from her side to sign something else, when she suddenly stopped on the spot. She’d seen a small flash in the darkness, a sign of something moving. Raising her hand and placing on the other’s chest, she forced them to stop moving.

Something in the shadows. Careful now. Nymoria drew the sabre, stepping forward and placing herself between the area she had seen, and Astra’s form. Her stance had shifted; the once comfortable gait and casual lean gone as she suddenly straightened into a fighter’s pose. The sabre was held lightly, the point level with the ground as she prepared to stab forward with it; no higher than shoulder height, and entirely still. She didn’t have to hold the poise long, as the Hellhound leapt from the darkness – three friends in tow as they all charged towards Nymoria. She didn’t have a chance to sign anything else towards her companion, instead forced to leap forward with the blade and slash outwards in the hopes of driving them all back.

"I've done a few quests, but essentially just basic ones so far. I'm looking to take on more and improve my skills, hence why I'm here" Astra replied to Nymoria as she asked if he had done many quests. It's true that he's seen some action before, but not nearly as much as Nymoria and the other skilled players that occupied Aincrad. The quests he'd done so far were pretty much just the basics, with a few others thrown in for good measure. Essentially Astra was still in his "training arc", but was hoping he'd be moving on from that soon.

The two walked through the underground caverns in a relatively short silence, until Nymoria had picked up on something up ahead. Astra stopped immediately when she had placed her hand on his chest. It didn't take long after his eyes had adjusted for Astra to notice the forms within the shadows, and he instinctively reached for the grip of his sword, unsheathing it slowly. There wasn't much time after the unsheathing of his blade before the hellhounds leapt out of the darkness, heading straight for Nymoria. Astra watched as she leapt forward with poise and grace and slashed at the fiends, causing them to burst into fragments of light, indicating that they were no more.

Astra didn't have too much time to appreciate Nymoria's attack before two more hellhounds made their way out of the shadows. "More of them!" Astra called out to his companion, readying his sword and taking his battle stance. Before one of the newly arrived hellhounds could take a leap at him, Astra leapt forward himself, activating a sword art and swinging his now-glowing sword with both hands in a downward motion. It looked as if he was about to slash the hellhound, but unfortunately the beast was much faster. The fiery mongrel leapt backwards as Astra brought his sword down, completely avoiding the attack. "Dammit," Astra cursed, frustrated at his miss. The hellhound now stood a little ways away from him, snarling and preparing a strike of its own. This was no time to be missing attacks, but it seemed like these hellhounds could be pretty agile.

Two more of the creatures had appeared from the shadows as Nymoria had struck down the first four. She cursed herself for letting the distraction come into existence, and quickly moved to get between them and Astra’s form as the original four disappeared into glowing shards of once-life, left behind as little more than a memory.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the dip in Astra’s health as the wave of heat from the area burned their flesh ever so slightly – a fact that the other player seemed not to notice, at first. Another worry came to her as she realised that the heat of the cavern, combined with Astra’s clothing choice, and everything occurring meant that they were in a slightly dangerous area – an area that could well prove the death of the lower levelled player, depending on how unlucky they were.

Health potion. Now. She signed briefly, her fingers flashing quickly in the player’s direction before turning her attention back to the pair of recently arrived Hellhounds. She would have to simple accept that the player would do as they were told, and drink the health potion, while she focused on bringing down the most recent threats. She quickly moved to engage the two, bringing her blade around in a sharp chopping motion with the hopes of taking them down instantly.

Battered and exhausted from his tour in Avernus, Wulfrin was making his way back to the teleport plaza of Floor 9. What he didn’t expect was to hear fighting on the other side of the gate to literal hell. The arena of Cerberus was bright with the flames of combat as the roar of Hell Hounds echoed. Cerberus stood above them directing their assault against a group of players, though not in its upgraded form. For a moment Wulfrin would watch from the shadows, that was until he identified the players in question.

“Shit” Wulfrin muttered under his breath as he noticed Astra’s HP bar suddenly dip to merely a quarter remaining. In an instant he was standing next to Astra, a neatly folded cloak with images of flames embroidered with gold outstretched.

“You got potions?” Wulfrin asked as his attention was focused on the looming threat of Cerberus for the third time in two days. “Down one then put this on. This place is sweltering and Cerbie don’t play around.”

Oddly enough Wulfrin was standing in nothing but a simple red shirt and tan pants rather than a full combat kit. It sounded almost hypocritical to be issuing cautionary orders when he himself hadn’t visibly taken precautions. Wulfrin was however content with the protection provided by his Survival skill.

“Remind me to scold your escort later, yeah?” Wulfrin chuckled as his platinum blade leveled in a defensive stance. It was only now that his eyes fell on the escort in question. It was a familiar hearing impaired player that he had traveled with only a few times before, Nymoria. His tone shifted almost immediately. “On second thought a gentler approach might be needed.”

Wulfrin didn’t attempt to call out to her, but the first time she would glance their direction Wulfrin would simply wave her on to focus on her fight. Wulfrin was content to simply participate as an added bit of assurance.

In the heat of the battle, Astra had hardly noticed that he was taking damage from the environment. It wasn't until he had missed his attack on the Hell Hound, and Nymoria had finished them off, that the pain started to set in. It felt like a weighted blanket of fire was being placed onto his skin directly, wearing him down and nearly bringing him to his knees. Astra stumbled slightly, and planted the blade of his sword in the ground to hold himself up. The burning sensation wasn't subsiding, but the most worrying thing he noticed was his HP being brought down to a mere 5. If he didn't act quickly, this could be the end of his journey, not long after it started.

Astra glanced over at Nymoria, who had signed that he needed a health potion, and Astra mustered up a nod in return. As he produced the potion from his inventory and prepared to drink it, a familiar figure stepped from the shadows and was next to him nearly instantly. It was Wulfrin, the player who had so far taken Astra under his wing and had been preparing him for the trials of Aincrad. Astra was naturally happy to see his friend and potential mentor, but the circumstances weren't too great. "Oh, hey. What're you doing here?" Astra had asked the player, but he also realized he didn't really have time for small talk. "I was just about to take this, guess I made a big mistake," Astra chuckled as he winced. He downed the health potion instantly, and felt the pain begin to subside briefly, and his strength return in small increments.

There was no one to blame but himself for this blunder. I mean, he was the one who even thought he could handle the quest at his current level. It made sense that the embers, flames, and beasts here would bring about a searing pain if you weren't prepared. Then there was the whole outfit conversation between him and Nymoria, and she was right, his current outfit provided no help.

Astra looked to the crimson colored coat that Wulfrin was offering his way. "Will this help mitigate the environmental damage? I should've expected it. Nymoria tried her best to warn me." The novice player took the coat from Wulfrin and inspected its craftsmanship. It was a damn fine piece of armor, certainly made by Wulfrin. It didn't necessarily mesh with Astra's style, but that was the least of anyones concerns at the moment. He went through his inventory and temporarily took off his current armor/outfit, stripping to nothing but his undergarments, as he prepared to put on the coat. Just being in that half-naked state alone in this place made a huge difference.

"Sorry I wasn't able to help out with the hounds, Nymoria. The one I tried to attack got away from me. Thanks for taking them out though. You're incredibly skilled with that saber!" Astra hoped that his apologetic tone was apparent. Perhaps the swordsman in training was being too hard on himself, but he hated not being able to contribute. On top of that, he was embarrassed that he took that heat damage and almost died. Astra turned his attention to Wulfrin, and began to speak. "Thanks for this, Wulfrin. Just gotta add that to the list of things I owe you for, heh. Though, again, what are you doing here? You're looking pretty casual for being in the depths of hell," he said with a playful smile.

“Trust me,” Wulfrin chuckled. “This isn’t close to hell. I can take you there when you’ve got some higher numbers. As for the coat, I’m gunna need it back. It’s my back up armor in case I need speed over raw damage protection.”

Wulfrin took a moment keeping himself firmly between Astra and the imposing beasts. Astra had made an interesting point though, he wasn’t exactly dressed for the occasion. In fact only a handful of hours ago he was wearing that same set of armor facing down the upgraded version of Cerberus. That fight was significantly harder than the one presented by the beast before them. In fact Wulfrin struggled with the unique aspect of the fight, having to strategically deal his damage in order to meet the requirements for a new sword skill.

”As for my attire,” Wulfrin continued as he continued his vigilant watch. “Let’s just say I’m not currently outfitted to fight serious enemies. I’m on a collection run. Been probing a special instance I found that’s guarded by Cerberus. There’s a dungeon inside that I’d like to clear, but even at my current level while fully kitted I wouldn’t stand a chance against the boss. Rumor has it there’s a dope sword though, so I’ve been farming the area to learn attack patterns and such.”

"Great, if this isn't hell then I can only imagine what it'll actually look like," Astra said as he donned his new temporary equipment. "Sure thing, thanks for letting me use it for now." When the new armor was equipped there was almost an instant relief from the heat. Astra couldn't help but let out a relieved sigh as his body temperature cooled down. If he was looking to proceed through higher floors he would need to be more aware of potential environmental dangers. This world wasn't so simple that each floor was just a change of scenery, and he almost learned that lesson the hard way.

"That dungeon sounds interesting, especially the sword. Maybe you could run it with a party? I'm sure a team like you and Nymoria could handle it," he said motioning to both of his companions. Eventually he'd reach the point where he would be going through dungeons, looking for new and upgraded equipment, new skills, the works. For now he'd have to settle for the smaller steps, and relying on others for protection. He was thankful for all of the help he was receiving, but he couldn't help but feel like he needed to do better, especially if he wanted to be in their position one day. It felt as if he was dragging his feet still, even with all of the work he was putting in.

Astra glanced back at the shadows of the caverns, wondering if more Hell Hounds would return, and if combat would start up once again. With his sword readied once more he took on a battle stance, just in case any new fiends appeared. Nymoria and Wulfrin were more than capable of taking on Cerberus' hounds, and Cerberus himself, but Astra would still be ready to fight, even if he could only put a scratch on the beasts. Still, even with the fireproof coat, death was still a strong possibility if he were to take a hit. Keeping a strong focus would be key. "So," he began to speak to his companions, "are there still hounds lurking? Or is it time for Cerberus?"

Nymoria’s eyes roamed over the entire cavernous area. Cerberus had come to a halt, stepping back from its edge of command where it had been directing the hellhounds to assault them; a sign that Nymoria didn’t like. It was rare that a boss – quest or otherwise – stepped back from an attack, and it usually meant that more danger was upon them. Her eyes roamed over the area, taking everything in before turning back towards Astra to check the pathways that they had taken to get to this location.

Nymoria jumped, her sabre coming up into a readied position, her arm held back and the blade levelled to strike out and stab – Wulfrin? The weapon hovered in the air for a second, a seemingly flash of emotions passing over Nymoria’s face before she shook herself slightly and lowered the weapon, shaking her head in order to clear the confusion. She was shocked, and yet somehow not surprised, at the sudden appearance of the man. I didn’t even notice his approach. She could feel the anger, the resentment within herself, before turning to the others with a dissimulated smile forced upon her features.

Wulfrin. It is good to see you. I think. She signed with only her right hand, the words coming out slower as she carefully shifted in place so she could see both of the other players, and Cerberus in the distance. Her eyes danced back and forth between both groups, as if she were trying to watch both at the same time. Portions of the conversation between the two other players reached her, and Nymoria found herself shirking back away from the other two as she realised her own error – an error she had tried to correct, as much as plausible. That’s my fault… She wanted to say the words aloud, but knew it was impossible. Instead, she turned her attention almost entirely towards Cerberus, her decision made.

I will go finish the master. Astra. Stay. She took off with sabre in hand, dashing up the small slope that led to the larger hound awaiting her arrival, the three heads seemingly livening as she approached. Nymoria didn’t wait for it to engage with her, instead rushing forwards and forcing herself into the air, leaping and spinning as she brought her sabre on a path to bring down the beast in a single strike.

Nym's skills were on point. Wulfrin followed her strikes with keen focus as she continued to harry the massive three headed beast before them. The downside, Nym hadn't seemed to prepare for Cerberus being able to dodge attacks. At least he hoped it was Cerberus moving slightly out of the way and not an absolute fumble on her end. Wulfrin weighed the options before finally drawing his platinum blade from its scabbard. He may have been in full loot mode, but this version of Cerberus would just crumple under his simplest of sword arts. As casually as he had appeared, Wulfrin walked up to Cerberus and with just a few quick motions, took out the remaining heads.

"Don't worry," Wulfrin chuckled as he placed a hand on Nym's shoulder. "You can still take the credit. I've done this quest before and know how dangerous the environmental effect can be."

Wulfrin's attention snapped to the still slightly opened gate that Cerberus was guarding. Sounds of howling wolves could be heard as three more Hellhounds seemingly had followed him out of the special area.

"Let me get the gate closed!" Wulfrin ordered as he rushed towards the gate. "I totally forgot to close it behind me. My bad. I'll flank behind them and mop up what's left." Wulfrin pressed his full weight and strength into the wrought iron gate that grinded against the rocky arena floor. With a strained groan, the gate fell into place with a heavy THUD only a  few short seconds before a much larger infernal creature pushed its way through.

With how quickly Nymoria and Wulfrin dispatched all three of Cerberus' heads, Astra was in awe. Nymoria took the first head down with incredible poise and skill, and Wulfrin finished the rest off with no hesitation. There was a part of Astra that wished he could've helped take down even just one of the heads, but he knew that would be a waste of energy and effort. His damage output wouldn't be nearly strong enough, he could potentially catch the ire of the beast, and today he was seemingly off of his game - missing attacks left and right.

There was a sense of relief, however, when the monster was taken down. His companions were reliable and ready for anything it seemed, and he no longer needed to worry about turning into dog food. Well, at least that's what he thought originally. The calm after the battle didn't last long, as howls from more hellhounds came from the gates that Cerberus once stood in guard of. It looked as though the battle wasn't over, so Astra readied his sword once more, hoping he could at least offer some assistance.

As Wulfrin closed the gate, preventing other creatures from attacking, Astra made his way closer to the new group of hellhounds that had appeared. He knew they'd be short work for Nymoria and Wulfrin, but the least he could do was try to make it a little easier by damaging someone. One of the hellhounds turned Astra's way and began to snarl at the novice swordsman, readying itself for what was to come. Astra wasn't put off by the creature, however, and moved from his prepared stance to close the distance between him and the beast. The sword that trailed behind him began to glow a luminescent blue, with slight trails of light coming off of it as it moved. Astra slashed at the hellhound in a horizontal arc, hoping that his sword art would land. Lo and behold, his poor luck persisted. The infernal beast was deft and nimble, and completely dodged the attack, leaping away from Astra's blade.

Astra couldn't help but let out a frustrated sigh - what was keeping him from hitting these things? Better luck next time. That is, the next time he's on Floor 9 and a bit more well prepared.

Nymoria had entirely missed the forms of Cerberus’ heads – at least, two of them. Her blade had sailed passed, missing its mark entirely and leaving the beast only partially hindered from continuing its reign of fire and brimstone upon them. Nymoria had slipped backwards following her attack – as much accidentally as purposefully giving Wulfrin the space he needed in order to follow up his own assault against the heads. She found herself shaking her head slightly in response, trying to clear away the daze that had come over her for a single instant.

Hellhounds. Danger still. Focus. She wasn’t quite sure why she had noticed the creatures, but as Astra had rushed forward to face the incoming hounds, Nymoria had glanced over the battlefield and pieced together what had occurred. With Cerberus down, Wulfrin had moved to close the gates that he had entered through – gates that led to the depths of some area that none of them would like to vacation within. Astra, unfrozen and oddly confident in the situation, had rushed towards the creatures with the intent of bringing them down. Missed. Go help. The thought was enough to send Nymoria dashing forward, her blade coming up as she prepared to feet the trio of hounds and bring them to an end.

At least, she hoped that would be the case. As she closed with them, however, she wondered if she were losing her edge. Not the time. Focus. She shook away the doubt, if only for the time being, before bringing her blade up and around into a ready stance. A single step and she closed in with the hellhounds, meeting them and blocking their direct path towards Astra. She didn’t have time to sign anything towards the other two players, and could only hope that they would do what was necessary if she happened to miss her own attacks against them.
