Minako 0 Posted February 9 #1 Share Posted February 9 (edited) The sky was clear, and a bright blue as the sun hung high in the air. Little to no clouds hung in the sky, perfect weather for today's festivities. A small clearing lay empty, it's grass field mowed perfectly and laid smooth. Seats sat around the stage in a large 'U' and higher elevations as the seats went further back, allowing any to have a clear view of the stage. A smattering of people, a mixture of NPC's and PC's alike sat around in clumps. Not enough, but she was sure the show that she and Enkindling drafted was going to be the biggest thing Aincrad had seen. And she, was going to sell that shit. "GOOD MORNING AINCRAD!" The smaller woman cried out to the crowd. Despite her small stature, her voice carried. Naturally talented, and aided by the amphitheater. "Are we ready for one of the great show's you'll ever see in your life!?" She cried out, attempting to hype up the crowd and possibly even bring in more people who had just been standing near. "This week is going to be filled to the brim with non-stop action, blood, violence, and drama! With this, the first week of the Clash of Blades tournament!" She announced met with a smattering of applause. "Now, today we have a very special pair of participants. Firstly, standing an a dizzying six feet and one inch! We have a relative newcomer to scene! When he's not thinking of a slick plan, he's helping those in need! It's The Phantomstriker himself! KIYABU HISAO!" Minako practically screamed as she waved over for the man to come in and stand on the designated spot. "And who will be this impressive newcomer's opponent? I'm so glad you asked!" She said, taking a few steps to the side. "On this side we have standing at a similar five feet and two inches! A current frontliner taking what time they have to spare to entertain us here! It's the Moon Arcana of the Tarot! It's NIGHT!" Minako said, waving for the woman to get on stage and meet the applause. When both players were on the field, Minako motioned for them to get closer to her so she wouldn't have to bore the crowd with rules. "Alright guys, it's showtime. So be sure to ham it up some okay? Really sell it, like when she hits you you go augh! And when he hits you you go bwah! Make it dramatic!" She said, giving them a slight instruction. She let out a small cough as she cleared her throat, realizing that she may have had gone a bit too far on her instructions. "I'll just, go over the rules again just to make sure we're on the same page." Minako said, before she started going over the rules with each of them. "And now, if we understand we can get started. Back to your marks. And let's have a good time." She said before turning back to the crowd. "Today's clash of blades will be between Hisao and NIGHT! New comer with promise versus Seasoned Veteran! Will NIGHT show that experience will win her the day or will Hisao show us that he has just enough talent as anyone in this game? The only way we can find out is through combat!" Minako screamed out! "Now then! Fighters!" "CLASH!" Out of Character Thank you both so much for being here! Below is another explanation of the rules, how we would like things formatted, and other important details! Quote Week 1 has no thematic or special rulings. Combatants will have to win this one on completely flat footing. Remember that all stats and tiers are locked to Level 10, Tier 1. If you need assistance, us THIS SHEET- It has the level 10, paragon 0, and tier level 1 lock already in place. All you need to do is plug in the appropriate skills at Rank 3 or lower, as well as your equipment. Remember to check the Informational for what Skills, Mods, and Addons are, and are not, allowed. It is on each Combatant to log their own stats, and changes in those stats in each combat post. Do so with a spoiler to declare your starting stats, purchased consumables from the weekly shop, and then your natural regens, effects, or DoTs at the end of every post. Bonus brownie points if you also link your use of the sheet linked above to make it really easy for us to double check and keep track of everything. Both Combatants are given a post to introduce themselves, and go over anything they want. In that post, they will each roll, the Combatant with the higher Natural LD will go first. If the second to post rolls the higher LD, they may use that same roll result to begin their turn and start the fight.' Ask @Kindling or @Minako if you have any questions. Ordinarily, the fight will end 11:59 PM Saturday, Feb 15th, 2025. However, we are fairly flexible, and if Combatants request an extension on that time, they'll get it. If we do not hear from you, and one Combatant does not post by then, it will be considered a default, and a win for the other Combatant. Remember! Most of all; have fun! "GOOD MORNING AINCRAD!" the roar of the audience was overwhelming. night hadn't been in a tournament for a while, and she hadn't expected to push herself into entering another one either. in the last, she had entered because of a reason, a promise kept to herself -- not that it mattered. the informational that was issued to her had said something about a status condition that prevented them from going all out, so cardinal would make sure that it would all be in good fun. and she almost thought herself as part of the audience, too, watching the man dubbed the phantomstriker stride onto the stage. but the moment the announcer started the introduction, night was half aware she did match the height of the mentioned brawler. "... A current frontliner taking what time they have to spare to entertain us here! It's the Moon Arcana of the Tarot! It's NIGHT!" so much for guild secrets! and the title of a 'frontliner' to boot? no way. night didn't even think coming up with something snarky for a self-proclaimed title was worthwhile, but maybe it would've been better than being ousted as part of the group of veterans who should've been helping them get out of the game. to anyone serious, this was clearly a distraction from their shared goal. she couldn't even deny it. night growled and rolled her shoulders, leaping up onto the stage. when they huddled, she tried not to shrink away when the announcer's fist smacked into her palm in a demonstration of 'the dramatics'. right as minako had turned away from them, night nodded to the other player. "ignore all of that," she started, drawing forth cosmic devourer with a flick of her wrist. "i'm really not as formidable an opponent as she makes me out to be. let's just have ourselves a clean match, alright?" ID240611 | ld17
Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 9 #3 Share Posted February 9 (edited) Whilst waiting for the cue to enter through his assigned gate, Kiyabu heard Minako begin her announcement of the two combatants. As she started with him first, Which felt oddly embarrassing. Because the announcer outed his self-proclaimed title of Phantom-striker. Which was originally created with humorous intent, But Kiyabu couldn't dwell on that for long. ‘At least, I'll be wearing my mask..’ He murmured with an embarrassed look on his face, Which was hidden beneath the mask. As Kiyabu approached the stage, his heart pounded with a mix of excitement and anticipation. The crowd's murmurs swelled into a deafening roar, their eyes fixed on him, eager for the spectacle he was about to unfold. The radiant sunlight bathed him in a warm glow, casting dramatic shadows that danced around him like silent partners in his performance. With a deep breath, Kiyabu closed his eyes, drawing on the confidence that had carried him through countless trials and tribulations. He felt the familiar surge of energy within him, the same energy that had always been his ally. When he opened his eyes, they gleamed with determination, a silent promise of the spectacle to come. He extended his left hand, palm facing upwards, and with a flick of his wrist, the 'Terra Splicer' dagger materialized, its blade shimmering with a faint purple hue. The audience gasped in unison, their collective intake of breath a symphony of anticipation. Kiyabu's lips curved into a knowing smile as he gripped the dagger, its weight a comforting familiarity. Swiftly, he spun the dagger in his left hand, the blade tracing intricate patterns in the air, each movement precise and deliberate. The dagger's edge caught the light, casting dazzling reflections that seemed to dance around him like fireflies. The crowd was captivated, their cheers growing louder with each spin, each twirl. As the dagger reached its apex, Kiyabu paused for a moment, savoring the silence before the crescendo. Then, with a fluid motion that seemed almost too fast for the eye to follow, he slashed the dagger through the air, sending a shimmering arc of purple light arcing over his head. The light streaked across the stage, illuminating every corner, every face, as it curved gracefully before him. The audience erupted into a frenzy, their cheers echoing through the venue. Kiyabu's smile widened as he reached out with his right hand, the dagger soaring through the air to land perfectly in his grasp. The crowd held their breath, their eyes wide with wonder as the dagger settled in his hand, its blade gleaming in the stage lights. Kiyabu twirled the dagger once more, his movements a blend of precision and grace, before lowering it to his side. The stage fell silent for a moment, the tension palpable, before the audience erupted into a thunderous applause. Kiyabu bowed gracefully, To acknowledge their cheers. After his bit of showmanship, He turned his attention to the other Combatant. Night, Who was slowly approaching the same stage. As Minako made another grand announcement for his opponent, Which had him concerned. ‘A frontliner.. I've only ever met one, And he was strong.. So this means, She'll not be an easy opponent..’ He murmured quietly, As they were huddled together. Kiyabu listened to Minako closely, While she explained that they should try to make it dramatic. So their audience has something worthwhile to watch. Once Minako turned her attention back to the audience, Kiyabu turned his masked gaze to Night. “You shouldn't put yourself down, I've heard the incredible feats of Frontliners.. You and the others are awesome..” He expressed his admiration for their efforts in this virtual world. “And one day, I hope to be fighting on the same battlefield.” Kiyabu added, While offering a handshake to his opponent. Before heading to his marked space, So they could prepare for combat. NIGHT 0 Posted February 12 #4 Share Posted February 12 they shook hands. she gave him a taut smile. as they turned towards their positions, night watched the man carefully from the corner of her eye. she wasn't one for flair or showmanship, noting the appeal to the audience that kiyabu had pulled off. minako's words played in her head, as each step across the stage tugged her towards her starting anchor. that she left the crowd quiet, tense and wanting? it was a state that wouldn't do for the event. night thought hard about her opening move, just as she did her about-turn on the spot, facing her opponent in a neutral stance. "Today's clash of blades will be between Hisao and NIGHT! New comer with promise versus Seasoned Veteran! Will NIGHT show that experience will win her the day or will Hisao show us that he has just enough talent as anyone in this game? The only way we can find out is through combat!" controlled breathing, as she was used to doing. was that hesitation crawling under her skin? "Now then! Fighters!" (with the limitations in mind, she'd better come up with a plan, fast --) "CLASH!" on instinct, she moved. a blurred shot of darkness, cut through the air, night defaulted to her basics as a greatsword user. in one moment, her blade was flipped backwards, pommel first. in the next, her hand was raised over her head, and the base of that pommel had struck kiyabu's armor somewhere close to his sternum, at an angle, despite the players' height difference. shockwaves rippled through the air, clearly demonstrating the amount of strength night had decided to throw into the hit. she herself felt it too, through the vibrations sent into herself via her sword. "who said it's to put myself down?" night spun, if only to push back her opponent with the back of her forearm, without cardinal's appeal for a guessed second sword art. distance between them created, she fell back into a defensive stance, the flat of her weapon facing kiyabu protecting herself, though an eye peeked through the side of her makeshift shield. "mind you, i simply wouldn't place those players atop of pedestals. after all, we're all only human." her stance faltered for a second, as she pulled a hand away to gesture in her speech. "we're both mortal, you and i. so whatever i can do, you can do it, too." Spoiler > MAIN ACTION: TECH-A ID240851 | bd9 | -> Kiyabu Hisao -9 EN. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 12 #5 Share Posted February 12 On his side of the arena, Kiyabu stood with his back straight, his dark, wiry hair catching the faint glow of sunlight as he adjusted his grip on the dagger in his hand. His eyes, sharp and calculating, scanned the expanse of the arena. Mentally cataloging the terrain and his opponent, a figure somewhat more adept at combat than himself. Stood across from him, her greatsword resting casually on her shoulder. Kiyabu’s breath was steady, his heart pounding faintly in his chest as he waited for the signal to begin. He knew the odds were against him. He was out geared, Out Skilled and perhaps even outmatched, but he had no choice but to fight. The air was thick with anticipation, the low murmur of the crowd a distant hum that seemed to vibrate through the stone floor beneath his feet. The torches flickered, casting long shadows that danced across the walls of the arena. But the tension in the air made it feel stifling. Kiyabu shifted his weight slightly, his dagger glinting faintly in the light as he prepared himself mentally for the chaos that was about to unfold. Then, Minako announced the beginning of their match. The moment the match officially started, Kiyabu’s world seemed to shift into a blurry, chaotic stream of motion. Night, his opponent, moved with a speed and precision that contrasted the weight of her weapon. But before he could even react, she had closed the distance between them, her greatsword swinging in a wide arc that he barely managed to dodge. But it was her next move that caught him completely off guard. With a swift, fluid motion, she twisted her body and delivered a brutal strike to his sternum with the pommel of her greatsword. The impact was thunderous, the force of the blow reverberating through his entire body like a shockwave. Kiyabu gasped, his breath hitching as he stumbled backward, his vision swimming for a moment. The weight of the strike was almost unbearable, and he could feel the vibrations traveling up his spine, radiating outward to every limb. “Urgh?!” He managed to choke out, his voice strained as he struggled to regain his footing. His dagger clattered to the ground as his grip loosened involuntarily, his arms trembling slightly as he tried to steady himself. For a fleeting moment, he was left completely stunned, his mind struggling to process the sheer force of the attack. But even as he reeled from the impact, he knew he couldn’t afford to stay down. This was no time for weakness. Kiyabu’s eyes narrowed as he quickly assessed his situation, his mind racing as he formulated a plan. He needed to recover, to regroup, and to find an opening before Night could strike again. He had to stay sharp, stay focused, and most importantly, stay alive. As the seconds ticked by, Kiyabu slowly began to regain his composure. His breathing steadied, his vision cleared, and his muscles, though sore and trembling, began to respond to his commands once more. He reached down, his fingers brushing against the hilt of his dagger, and quickly retrieved it, his grip tightening as he adopted a more defensive stance. He knew he was in trouble, but he was far from defeated. The battle was far from over, and he intended to make sure that he left the arena on his own terms, one way or another. NIGHT 0 Posted February 12 #6 Share Posted February 12 cardinal's timers ticked down in her head. she walked circles around kiyabu, eyeing him cautiously, keeping an arm's length distance. not once did her gaze leave his figure as he dropped to the ground to pick up his weapon. it wasn't that she had decided to give the man a fighting chance, but she did imply the fight would be clean. it was her fault they started out dirty. night was too familiar with playing underhandedly. the next move she pulled, she figured, might read all the same. just as her opponent's sights began to lift from his scooped dagger, night rushed in with a second swing. her experience was contradicting her, it seemed -- all that time wielding her blades like a one-handed tool had made her unfamiliar to the two-handed style she used to be accustomed to. a shift too late, and either kiyabu had dodged out the way, or he'd blocked her blow. night growled at the realization. time to try again. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 12 #7 Share Posted February 12 (edited) Just as Kiyabu had regained his composure, the relentless Night did not spare him a moment's respite. She was a force of nature, a whirlwind of shadows and steel, and as she charged towards him with her greatsword poised for another devastating strike, Kiyabu's instincts kicked in. His senses sharpened, adrenaline coursing through his veins as he anticipated her move. The greatsword swung towards him with terrifying speed and precision, a blur of metal slicing through the air. But Kiyabu's reflexes, honed through countless battles and rigorous training, served him well. With a nimbleness that seemed almost uncanny, he twisted his body just in time, the blade grazing past him by mere inches. “Wo!?” he exclaimed, a mix of relief and surprise escaping his lips as he narrowly avoided what could have been a crippling blow. Kiyabu's eyes flicked back to Night, who had halted for a brief moment, her expression a mask of frustration. He could see the intensity in her eyes, the determination that burned like a fierce flame, and he knew that she would not relent. Yet, there was something else—a flicker of acknowledgment, perhaps even a begrudging respect. "I'm sorry." Kiyabu said, his voice steady despite the tension crackling in the air between them. "If my earlier words were wrong... And you had no intention of putting yourself down." He offered the apology sincerely, recognizing the strength and resolve she had displayed, even if they were now locked in combat. As soon as the words left his mouth, Kiyabu flipped his dagger into a reverse grip, the blade gleaming with a deadly promise. He shifted his stance, his body moving fluidly as he transitioned into a more agile position, one that allowed for swift movements and rapid strikes. He was no longer just reacting; he was ready to take the offensive. With a burst of speed, Kiyabu dashed towards Night, his movements a blur as he closed the distance between them. His mind was focused, every muscle in his body working in perfect harmony as he aimed for her vital spots. His plan was to unsettle her, to disrupt her formidable rhythm with a flurry of precise strikes that would leave her reeling. His dagger danced through the air, each motion calculated to target key points on her body—her shoulder, her ribs, her side, and more. Each attempt was a blend of grace and power, designed not only to inflict damage but to find a way through her defenses. Kiyabu knew that he needed to be quick, to maintain the momentum and keep her off balance, for any hesitation could spell disaster. NIGHT 0 Posted February 13 #8 Share Posted February 13 there was a second reason at play for why night was going in so aggressively to begin with -- but the dull edge of a knife was nothing she had fear to contend with. though a quicken in her pulse had signaled of danger incoming, her greatsword was not defense enough to block each of the blows kiyabu was focused on preparing. each point struck had her staggered, fighting curses through gritted teeth, and neither did the announcer's words need to emphasize the importance of exaggeration. the gravitas of each immobilizing strike in the combo she'd been trapped in had highlighted enough in what direction her opponent was taking the fight towards. to the last, she struggled out of his hold. the moment eventually came when her battle healing kicked in, and night slipped out of harm's way just as the stun effect had worn off. from herself, an enmity growing. night heaved a breath thick, three steps away from the man of disaster. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 13 #9 Share Posted February 13 (edited) Though his fearsome combination granted a moment of reprieve, Kiyabu wouldn't waste this chance with words. As the gaze through his mask showed resolve and respect for her, Before taking notice of a faint shimmer. That was an indication of a passive healing skill activating on its own. “I've always been told, I'm quick on the uptake..” Kiyabu stated in agreement, While taking this opportunity to move in for another flurry of strikes. In that fleeting moment, a heartbeat suspended in time, Kiyabu propelled himself forward with unyielding determination, closing the gap between himself and Night with a speed that seemed almost supernatural. His mind was a whirlwind of calculation and instinct, every fiber of his being focused on the task at hand. Kiyabu knew that this was his opportunity to turn the tide, to seize control of the battle that had been fiercely contested since the start. With a fluid motion, he raised his dagger high, its blade gleaming ominously under the arena lights. The tip pointed directly at Night's face, a deliberate move designed to exploit the natural human instinct to protect one's most vulnerable features. He could see the flicker of surprise in her eyes, a split-second reaction that he had anticipated and counted on. But this was merely a feint, a clever ruse to mask his true intentions. As the dagger hovered mere inches from her face, Kiyabu executed a swift sleight of hand, dropping the weapon into his other hand with a dexterity that spoke of countless hours of practice and precision. The transition was seamless, the blade now poised with lethal intent as it shifted direction. His new target was strategic and cunning—Night's wrist and leg. Kiyabu understood that by disabling her dominant hand, he could potentially hinder her ability to wield the massive greatsword with its usual devastating force. And by targeting her leg, he aimed to disrupt her mobility, to rob her of the agility and balance that were crucial to her combat style. With a sharp, decisive movement, Kiyabu directed the dagger towards her wrist first, the blade slicing through the air with deadly accuracy. He could almost feel the tension in the air, the anticipation of whether his gamble would pay off, whether his quick thinking could outmaneuver Night's formidable defenses. Night, to her credit, reacted with a warrior's instinct, her body moving to counter the unexpected attack. Yet, Kiyabu's speed and the element of surprise were on his side. The dagger nicked her wrist, a superficial cut perhaps, but one that could disrupt her grip and shift the balance of power. Simultaneously, he pivoted, his body a blur of motion as he continued the assault, the dagger now aimed lower towards her leg. He hoped to catch her off guard, to deliver a blow that would force her to recalibrate, to pause and give him the opening he desperately needed. The arena was electric with the intensity of their clash, the audience captivated by the display of skill and strategy unfolding before them. Every movement was a testament to Kiyabu's tenacity and ingenuity, his refusal to be defeated driving him to push beyond his limits. The outcome was uncertain, the stakes incredibly high, yet Kiyabu remained resolute, his spirit unyielding as he fought with everything he had against Night, a formidable adversary in this dramatic confrontation. “And to that other comment about putting the Frontliners on a Pedestal is wrong, Because I agree.. We're only human at the end of it, But the reason for my admiration is.. I plan to surpass them.. Even if it takes a long time to do so.” Kiyabu mentioned in a calm voice, As he created some distance between them. NIGHT 0 Posted February 13 #10 Share Posted February 13 she eyed the tip of the dagger. her mind was threatening to fold into a scramble. not again. not again. it is her subconscious that struggles for survival, out of the years of practice of close quarters to save herself. a strike to her wrist was superficial; the raise of her blade to parry the swing had turned out to be herself buying into a feint. the subsequent nick to her leg left a gash, thrumming with numbness. night balked at every hit, nearly swaying just enough to knock the dagger out of her opponent's hand. too late, with force too little. "And to that other comment..." no time for words. that numbness from her wound spread through her. night's lips pressed together to form a thin line as she lunged forward, closing the gap, leaning into a swing at the abdomen that would never connect -- she'd target his feet instead. a tall order for someone so short, but night put her all into it, causing the man to stumble, if not fall. she punched the side of cosmic devourer's handguard into kiyabu, violent, sending a shock down his figure, before manhandling the weapon away from his hold, kicking it to one side. the edge of her greatsword was pressed to his chest. night watched him with intent, cold, forgetting the fight a match for show. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 13 #11 Share Posted February 13 Even though Kiyabu's feint had been executed with precision, catching Night momentarily off guard, it quickly became apparent that she was not a warrior to be easily subdued. Her response was swift and fierce, an explosive counterattack that seemed to draw from a wellspring of sheer ferocity. Night moved like a tempest, her greatsword a blur of steel as she unleashed a relentless barrage of strikes that forced Kiyabu onto the defensive. Despite Kiyabu's agility, He found himself struggling to keep up with the intensity of Night's assault. Her attacks were unyielding, each swing of her greatsword calculated to corner him, to pressure him into making a mistake. Kiyabu's heart raced as he parried and dodged, desperately seeking a way to regain the upper hand. But Night was relentless, her strategy shifting with cunning precision. Then, in a sudden pivot, Night targeted his footing, a move that caught Kiyabu completely off guard. The sweeping motion of her greatsword aimed low, catching his feet in a maneuver designed to destabilize him. "Ugh!?" He gasped, the world spinning as he stumbled backward, his balance lost. The ground rushed up to meet him as he fell, landing with a jarring thud that sent a sharp shock through his body. But Night's onslaught did not relent. As Kiyabu struggled to regain his senses, he felt the brutal impact of her weapon's handguard strike his chest with a force that left him breathless. "Gah?!" The blow reverberated through his torso, each shockwave a reminder of the power Night wielded. Pain flared through his ribs, and for a moment, everything seemed to blur together in a haze of agony and determination. In that vulnerable state, Night seized the opportunity to disarm him. With a swift, decisive motion, she wrestled the dagger from his hand, kicking it aside with a disdainful flick of her foot. The blade skittered across the arena floor, far out of Kiyabu's immediate reach. And then, with a chilling deliberation, Night pressed the edge of her greatsword against his chest, pinning him to the ground with an intensity that spoke of more than just a desire to win. As Kiyabu lay there, his breath coming in ragged gasps, he looked up into Night's eyes. What he saw was a cold, implacable intent, a focus that seemed to transcend the boundaries of a mere match. It was as though Night had become lost in the heat of battle, her warrior's instincts overriding the understanding that this was not a fight to the death. "Cough..! Are you still in there, Little Lady?" Kiyabu rasped, each word a struggle as he coughed against the pressure on his chest. His voice, though strained, carried with it a note of concern and a touch of defiance. He needed to reach her, to remind her of the reality of their situation, to reawaken the part of her that knew this was a contest, not a life-or-death struggle. His words hung in the air, a fragile bridge between them as the tension crackled like electricity. Kiyabu's heart pounded in his chest, each beat a reminder of the stakes they faced. He hoped his question would pierce through the haze of combat, that it would resonate within Night and bring her back to the present moment, where honor and respect were the true measures of their skill and strength. NIGHT 0 Posted February 14 #12 Share Posted February 14 "Cough..! Are you still in there, Little Lady?" she narrowed her eyes at his words. jittered against her will at studying the shape of his face. it wasn't the monster she had expected to see. so she relented, reeling, pushing herself away from her victim as the shock dawned upon her and left. this wasn't the real world. that wasn't her maker. and her health bar -- her health bar was still next to full. night fought to catch her breath as she watched kiyabu pick up his weapon, hand clutched around the collar of her shirt, fingers rubbing at her neck. she eyed the dagger, the jewel-encrusted thing that it was made out to be, and not a ghost of the hurricane of her past. a snarl made it out of her before she found her voice. "sorry," was all she could manage. "maybe... that was too much." fragile was her smile towards him then, wry yet genuine, easing the tension from the crowd with a bounce of her blade as she gestured. "that sort of thing happens a lot on the front, you know?" when her pleasantries fell, night dropped her guard, feigning her prepared stance once more. "your move first." she eyed the audience in anticipation. "it's only fair." Spoiler > MAIN ACTION: TECH-G > SWIFT ACTION: FOCUS +14 HP / +1 EN. ID240965 | cd8 | -> n/a. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 14 #13 Share Posted February 14 (edited) When Night finally snapped back to the present, the shift was palpable. The oppressive weight of her greatsword lifted from Kiyabu's chest, allowing him to draw a full breath for the first time since the intense confrontation had begun. Relief washed over him, mingling with the residual adrenaline that still coursed through his veins. Recognizing the opportunity, Kiyabu scrambled to his feet, his movements quick but cautious, as though wary of awakening Night's battle trance once more. He made his way to his dagger, its familiar weight reassuring in his hand. The weapon had become an extension of himself, and the loss of it, even for a moment, had felt like a part of his own defense had been stripped away. Now rearmed, he turned his gaze back to Night, who stood watching him with a mixture of wariness and newfound clarity. "No need to apologize, Little Lady." Kiyabu said, his voice gentle yet firm. "You've probably seen your fair share of monsters…" His words were laden with empathy, an understanding that beneath Night's formidable exterior, there lay scars and memories that perhaps still haunted her. He recognized the look in her eyes, one he had seen in many a warrior who had faced unspeakable horrors and lived to tell the tale. He continued, offering a tentative olive branch, "Maybe, after this match, we can grab a drink from one of the vendors?" His suggestion hung in the air, a small gesture of camaraderie amidst the chaos of competition. "But let's save that decision for when the match has come to an end." Night's expression softened slightly, a subtle nod indicating her acceptance of the offer—or at least her willingness to consider it. It was a moment of shared humanity, a reminder that beyond the clash of steel and the roar of the crowd, they were still people, bound together by the trials of their chosen paths. With the pleasantries exchanged and an unspoken understanding forged between them, Kiyabu shifted back into combat mode. This time, he was ready to take the offensive, determined to press any advantage he could muster. He concealed his dagger behind his back, its blade hidden from view as he approached Night with deliberate, measured steps. However, the dagger wasn't the only tool at his disposal. In his other hand, a small pouch materialized, its contents a secret weapon of sorts: a blend of black pepper, paprika, and chili powder. Though some might view this tactic as underhanded, it was a sanctioned strategy within the tournament's rules. Kiyabu was simply using every resource available to him, turning the arena's allowances to his advantage. As he closed the distance between them, Kiyabu launched his initial strike, the dagger aimed with precision. Yet, in the heat of the moment, the attack fumbled, his blade missing its mark. He cursed under his breath, but his mind was already racing ahead, ready to adapt and overcome. In an instant, he seized the opportunity to employ his backup plan. The pouch in his hand became his saving grace, the coughing powder a perfect tool for disruption. With a swift, practiced motion, he tossed its contents into the air, the fine particles swirling like a cloud of stinging dust between them. The effect was immediate. The pungent mix of spices filled the air, designed to irritate and distract, buying Kiyabu precious moments to recalibrate his strategy. He knew that this tactic, though unconventional, was within the bounds of the game's rules, and he intended to use it to its fullest potential. As the powder settled, Kiyabu prepared to capitalize on the opening it afforded, his mind focused, his resolve unshaken. The match was far from over, and he intended to see it through to the end, employing every skill and tactic he had on hand. In this arena, where honor and cunning intertwined, Kiyabu was determined to emerge victorious, one way or another. NIGHT 0 Posted February 15 #14 Share Posted February 15 "No need to apologize, Little Lady. You've probably seen your fair share of monsters…" night scoffed in humor. "yeah, you could say that again." she'd nodded to the invitation to the drink. then, they fell back into the thick of it fast. the careful steps of the man as he approached with his dagger unseen felt but practice of a reminder: there wasn't a real threat present, at least where her life was concerned. but the tournament standing? to him, it was training -- her health already seemed to have net her the strong potential for victory. to her, what was the match worth? the answer was lost to her still the moment she dodged the swing from his dagger. a thought that could be fixated on later. but while she was prepared for other strikes, what she hadn't foreseen was the bag of spices thrown her way. night stopped, rooted in place, a hand covering her mouth. a cheap trick? perhaps. but it had her on her back footing, her blade sunk into the stage for support. and, without defenses, that meant an opportunity for kiyabu to go all in for the next strike. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 15 #15 Share Posted February 15 Knowing that his chance of victory was slim from the outset, Kiyabu was acutely aware that every moment in this high-stakes match was precious. The odds had been stacked against him, yet he had managed to create a fleeting opportunity through quick thinking and strategic play. He understood that this was not just a battle of strength and skill but also one of endurance and resourcefulness. Thus, instead of risking another immediate strike against Night, he chose a different path—a tactical decision that could potentially turn the tide in his favor. As the cloud of coughing powder enveloped Night, obscuring her vision and momentarily disorienting her, Kiyabu seized this critical juncture to focus on his own recovery. He reached into his belt, fingers deftly finding the small, intricately carved vial that held a potion of rejuvenation. The vial was a precious commodity, its contents a vibrant elixir swirling with an iridescent glow, a testament to its potent restorative properties. With a swift motion, Kiyabu uncorked the vial and brought it to his lips, the liquid cool and refreshing as it slid down his throat. Almost instantly, he felt the effects begin to take hold. The potion worked its magic, a warm sensation spreading through his body as it mended the bruises and aches that the fierce battle had inflicted. His breath steadied, the sharp pain in his ribs dulled, and his muscles seemed to regain a vitality that had been waning under the relentless assault. The choice to utilize the potion was a calculated risk, a gamble that sacrificing an offensive maneuver for a moment of healing could pay dividends in the long run. Kiyabu knew that facing Night at anything less than his best would likely lead to a swift defeat, and in this arena, survival meant adapting to circumstances as they unfolded. The potion was not just a remedy for his physical wounds but a strategic asset in his arsenal, one that could provide the edge he desperately needed. As the potion revitalized him, Kiyabu's mind cleared, his focus sharpening with renewed clarity. He could feel his confidence growing, bolstered by the knowledge that he had managed to buy himself a reprieve from the immediate pressure. His eyes locked onto Night, who was beginning to recover from the disorienting effects of the powder, her form emerging through the dissipating cloud like a shadow coalescing into solid shape. Kiyabu prepared himself for the next phase of their confrontation, his body coiled and ready to spring into action once more. The temporary truce he had forged with the potion's aid was coming to an end, and he knew that Night would not be caught off guard again so easily. Yet, the renewed strength coursing through him gave him hope—a belief that he could still find a way to overcome the formidable warrior before him. In the heart of the arena, where the air thrummed with tension and the crowd's anticipation was palpable, Kiyabu stood poised, a warrior reborn. The match was far from over, and he was determined to make every second count, to fight with every ounce of cunning and tenacity he possessed. The path to victory was uncertain, fraught with challenges, but Kiyabu was ready to meet them head-on, driven by the unwavering resolve that had carried him this far. NIGHT 0 Posted February 16 #16 Share Posted February 16 he didn't take the hit. instead, night watched through the spice haze as kiyabu pulled out a potion of healing and downed it simply, his health shooting back up from the left. she calculated an estimate in her head. no doubt the amount mirrored what she had probably been regenerating back across the whole fight. once the effects of the stun wore off, she took a gait, slow, breaking through the miasma as she considered the next art to use. kiyabu had braced himself for the next bout in their skirmish. night's eyes were thrown to the wayside as she spoke. "neat trick. i think i knew what you were trying to do there." then, she raised an open palm. "how about a lesson, this time?" it wasn't a matter of lowering his guard, but a matter of enacting a strategy gained from experience over the years. she darted into his personal space, an eye trained to his hands, and skipped towards his blind spot once she noticed an opening towards his back. night swung, not knowing where she'd hit, but it didn't matter when she could draw strength enough to defy reality for a moment. a conjure of cinders burst forward where her blow had connected, and burst into a conflagration that travelled up the hatched wound she sliced open upon his figure. that only left for seconds for her to get out of his immediate radius if she wanted to avoid getting caught by another knife nick. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted February 16 #17 Share Posted February 16 (edited) With his health partially restored by the healing potion, Kiyabu felt a newfound sense of vigor, though it was tempered by the awareness that the battle was still far from over. He turned his gaze back to Night, whose relentless determination was undiminished. Her eyes were locked onto him with a focus that was both impressive and intimidating. Without hesitation, she closed the distance between them in a blur of motion, her intent clear and unyielding. "Shit!" The exclamation slipped from Kiyabu’s lips as he realized, too late, that Night had found a vulnerability in his defense—an overlooked blind spot that she exploited with ruthless efficiency. Her greatsword swung in a wide arc, and Kiyabu barely had time to register the impending danger before it connected with his exposed back. The slash was brutal, a powerful strike that sent pain radiating through his body. But it was more than just the physical blow that affected him; there was an insidious status effect woven into her attack. "Argh!" Kiyabu cried out as a burning sensation spread across his back, searing through his nerves like wildfire. It was a debilitating sensation, one that threatened to sap his strength and diminish his capacity to fight. Night's strategic use of such an effect showcased her mastery in combat, her ability to combine physical prowess with tactical ingenuity. In a desperate attempt to counter, Kiyabu lashed out, but his attack was uncoordinated, his focus disrupted by the pain. His dagger sailed wide of its mark, missing Night entirely. The failure of his strike was compounded by his body's betrayal, as he faltered and dropped to one knee, the world spinning around him. "Damn... I got reckless..." He muttered, chastising himself for the lapse in judgment that had led to this point. Gathering his resolve, Kiyabu struggled back to his feet, his movements slow and deliberate. It took all his willpower to push through the pain, to stand tall in the face of adversity. Despite the setback, he found himself filled with a profound sense of respect for Night, whose skill and tenacity had pushed him to his limits. "You're incredible.” Kiyabu admitted, his voice carrying both admiration and sincerity. "I knew my odds of winning weren't high... But this duel against you was a great learning experience for me." His words were genuine, a testament to the respect he held for a worthy opponent who had tested him in ways he had not anticipated. With a deep breath, Kiyabu made the difficult decision to concede. He sheathed his dagger, the gesture one of finality and acknowledgment of the battle's outcome. "I surrender, Little Lady." he declared, his tone filled with a sense of peace and acceptance. After formally surrendering, Kiyabu extended his hand towards Night, an offering of camaraderie and mutual respect. It was a gesture that transcended the competition, a symbol of the bond forged through the shared trial of combat. Though the match had ended, Kiyabu knew that the lessons he had learned and the respect he had gained would endure far beyond the confines of the arena. As the crowd erupted into applause, acknowledging the display of skill and honor from both combatants, Kiyabu stood with his hand outstretched, waiting to see if Night would accept this gesture of goodwill. The moment was a poignant reminder that, even in the heat of battle, respect and friendship could flourish, uniting warriors beyond the clash of steel. NIGHT 0 Posted Sunday at 01:59 PM #18 Share Posted Sunday at 01:59 PM "high praise already?" there was a flash of confusion in night's eyes, betraying her straight-laced neutral expression. and she was almost ready to draw her hidden stash, too, but the sheathing of his own dagger had her stop her hand from reaching into her pockets. huh. a surrender? she rightened her back and sunk her blade into the stage. "you... sure?" was all that made it out of her before her opponent's outstretched hand declared it formal. then, she waved away cosmic devourer from view. though there was an urge to fit in a rebuttal -- the technique itself wasn't really the lesson at hand -- night buried that sense beneath her exterior as she paced over to kiyabu to conclude the handshake. the sharpness she saved for combat and foreign interactions but melted away. Kiyabu Hisao 0 Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM #19 Share Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM “Yes, I'm sure about my decision to surrender this match to you.” Kiyabu reiterated, his voice steady and unwavering as he confirmed his choice. The weight of the decision settled comfortably on his shoulders as he extended his hand toward Night, an olive branch and acknowledgment of her victory. As their hands met in the middle, a silent understanding passed between them—a recognition of the skill and determination each had brought to the arena. “Even though I put up a good fight, it wasn't enough to beat you in terms of experience.” Kiyabu conceded, his tone tinged with both humility and admiration. He met Night's gaze with sincerity, acknowledging the gap in their levels of expertise. Yet, there was no bitterness in his words, only a genuine appreciation for the challenge she had presented. "But I don't regret my loss one bit." Kiyabu's words resonated with Night, and she responded in kind, expressing her gratitude for the fierce competition they had shared. The exchange was heartfelt, a mutual acknowledgment of the effort and spirit that had defined their duel. “So thanks for a great combat experience on this grand stage.” Kiyabu said, his gratitude genuine and heartfelt. As they stood there, Night offered an apology for the intensity that had surged during their match. Her eyes held a flicker of remorse, a recognition that her instincts had momentarily overridden the bounds of their contest. Kiyabu waved off her apology with a reassuring smile. “That onslaught was definitely intense.” He admitted. “But it's to be expected from a frontliner who faces life or death situations regularly.” There was no resentment in his voice, only understanding. He knew the pressures of battle, the instincts that could take over in the heat of the moment. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.” Kiyabu added with a hearty chuckle, acknowledging her respect for his abilities despite the outcome. “I've still got a long way to go before I can take you and others on equally.” His laughter was warm, a sign of his resilience and determination to continue growing and improving. As the adrenaline of the match began to fade, Kiyabu felt a newfound camaraderie with Night, a connection forged through shared trial and mutual respect. “After that match, I could definitely go for a good refreshment.” he said, the prospect of a cool drink inviting after the heat of battle. With a nod, he followed Night toward one of the vendors lining the arena, where the aroma of food and drink mingled with the lingering excitement of the crowd. “Since you're offering, it would be rude of me to decline such an offer.” Kiyabu said, accepting Night's gesture of goodwill. As they approached the vendor, the tension of the match gave way to a more relaxed atmosphere, their competitive spirits temporarily at rest. The clinking of glasses and the laughter of spectators filled the air as they ordered their drinks, a toast to the battle they had shared and the friendship that had emerged from it. As they sipped their refreshments, the conversation flowed easily, punctuated by anecdotes of past battles and dreams of future encounters. It was a moment of respite, a chance to reflect on the journey that had brought them to this point and to look forward to the challenges that lay ahead. In the heart of the bustling arena, amidst the cheers and celebrations, Kiyabu and Night found a sense of camaraderie that transcended the boundaries of competition—a testament to the enduring spirit of those who dared to test their mettle on the grand stage. Minako 0 Posted Thursday at 01:49 AM Author #20 Share Posted Thursday at 01:49 AM A quick clash between blades, the namesake of this tournament. A quick exchange of words, of morals, of wits! NIGHT moved with blinding speed expected of an experience front liner. NIGHT knocked the wind from Kiyaba, and proceeded to show him a mostly one sided beat down. Eventually, leading to Kiyabu's surrender. It wasn't quite what she was expecting. All the excitement that he carried, all that celebrating he called out to, for what? She wasn't upset, just disappointed that he would rather surrender than fight tooth and nail. Minako stood from her spot, raising a hand. "The winner, is NIGHT!"
