She considered the thought in silence for a few moments as she continued to run her hands through the rocky area she’d come to rest in, trying to figure out if she’d been ignoring obvious signs in other areas of her explorations in Aincrad. She was certain that she had, in some cases, ignored more obvious actions by NPCs due to any number of extenuating factors; even she was bound to have bad days where her desire to be away from people, real or digitally created.

Sometimes…things do not go as we expect, do they? She signed slowly, as if feeling the thoughts out among her fingertips even as she shared them. She knew that it was an obvious, empty saying in many ways – and yet somehow it felt right in the moment; as if to acknowledge that she understood why Nemo had done what he had done. Still, I think most players enjoy coming to the garden – if for no reason other than all the things they find. It is wonderful here. Peaceful even. At least, I think it is peaceful.

Nemo smiled in response to her words, but remained silent. Whether he agreed with her or not, she couldn’t quite tell, and he appeared unwilling to break the moment by disagreeing with her or arguing. Content with the silence, she turned back to her small measure of foraging, letting her hands run along the ground as she thought about her next plans for the day.

’Are you just going to sit here all day? There’s more things to cull, you know.’ Nemo grinned at her surprised expression, seemingly amused in her reaction to his words. Somehow she hadn’t considered – even with everything he’d said earlier – that he would encourage her to hunt down the creatures within his garden. ’What? Did you think I would be upset again? You’re one of the first people to actually ask for permission…I’m not mad, this time.’

Nymoria gave a silent laugh in response, finding the entire situation amusing. The man seemed more comfortable somehow, a far change from when they’d first met. It was an inspiring change, if Nymoria was to be entirely honest. Nodding her head, she pushed herself to her feet and dusted herself off, determined not to ignore the possibility now that it was before her. Fine, I will go hunt. If you are providing me the opportunity, I would be inappropriate to deny or not accept the invitation.

She gave a quick bow towards the man, before turning and rushing off to another nearby group of snapdragons, determined to make use of her time in the garden. She knew that sooner or later she would need to leave, but for now she would focus on obtaining as much col, materials and other loot as she could possibly get while she was here. Make the best of it all, while I can…

They saw her coming, and three of the four in the group tried to scramble out of the way – each one caught by Nymoria’s blade as it moved in a scattering of directions. None were safe, and she saw the bleeding openings of two as they shifted slightly towards her, their escape failed and forgotten as they refocused on attacking her. Her sabre moved as she parried their claws, driving up and away attacks that would have otherwise torn small gashes in her sides.

They tried surrounding her, pressing in towards her in the hopes of overwhelming her defences. She managed to repel most of their attacks, but as one slammed into her shoulder and sent her spinning, Nymoria realised that being surrounded was a bad place to be. She leaped out of their circle, leaving them floating in confusion as she rolled beneath their forms and bounced to her feet beyond their reach, smile on her face as she spotted Nemo in the distance. She quickly signed towards him, ensuring that he knew there was nothing to worry about. Fine. Fine.

Turning her attention back to the snapdragons, she considered her options before launching into her attack. She knew that with these small creatures, the best thing to do would simply be to rush in, overwhelm and bring them all down with a single, large sweep. Assuming none of them become wise and learn to dodge. If they do though…I can just deal with that afterwards. For now, let’s bring them down. Decision made, she let her body move as she closed the distance and prepared herself for a flurry of simple strikes, followed up by her final blow towards them – or at least, she hoped it would be her final blow.

The snapdragons exploded beneath her blade, no contest between herself and the smaller creatures that could have gone any other way in finality. She almost felt sorry for them, almost. Are they not living creatures too? But then…should I feel pity every time we kill an insect, or something that’s trying to harm us…? It’s a dilemma that I can’t afford to consider right now. The purpose here is to live. Nymoria shook herself from the depths of the thoughts, glancing over towards Nemo and seeing the man casually petting one of the mossy wolves that had strolled near. She almost prepared herself to move to defend him, before realising that neither appeared to be in danger – in fact, they seemed almost peaceful with one another.

Out of everything I’ve seen…that’s perhaps the weirdest. Or among the weirdest, I would say. She turned to spot another group of snapdragons closing in on her position, their movement and general behaviour confirming that they had already spotted her. She raised and spun the sabre in her hand, preparing herself physically as well as mentally to face the things as they closed the distance. A single glance cast back to make sure that Nemo was still fine, before she launched herself forwards once more. She’d spent a lot of time already in mowing down the snapdragons, and although she wondered if Nemo would eventually redirect her towards something else, she figured that she would at least make the most of her freedom in the garden.

The small drakes shifted around her form as they tried to escape the danger that was the sabre in her hand. Nymoria flowed through them, stepping lightly from foot to foot as she shifted around and underneath the drakes, letting her blade follow a series of strikes that were as much under her control as they appeared randomised. She could see as slashes opened up on the drakes, the wounds forcing them to retreat slightly, as much as her assault and presence had forced them.

I’ve really improved. I should be happy about that. Proud about that. Nymoria knew she should feel some positive emotions from the idea that she had become a better fighter, a more capable frontliner now. She felt a small hollow feeling, however, in response to the knowledge. As much as she had improved in her own skills and fighting capabilities, she still had to work on her ability to partner with others – a skill limitation that she wasn’t sure she’d ever overcome. Focus on the good, for now…the rest comes later. The thought did nothing to change her emotions, but it was enough to keep her from diving into madness and despair in the moment.

She brought her sabre up to deflect a claw thrown towards her, stepping aside as a pair of the smaller drakes came rushing forwards, hoping to use the distraction of their brethren to strike her. A tactic that would have worked, had Nymoria not been paying close attention. She turned towards the fourth of the drakes, cutting upwards and forcing it back as it closed the distance towards her, stopping its attack before it even started. Time to finish off this group, I guess.

They came towards her as a group in response to her own charge towards them, and Nymoria felt as they collided. A brash group of claws and teeth tearing towards her, her sabre attempting to deflect those that she could. The first of the creatures exploded into shards as she slashed and stabbed, causing one to reel backwards in sudden concern for its own safety – a wise choice, she felt, given the circumstances. The distraction, however, was enough for one of the creatures to slide up beneath her sabre’s blade and slash across her throat, leaving her reaching for the area and pommelling back the small creature at the same time.

I’m fine! I’m fine! I’m fine! Her blade waved wildly even as she calmed herself, cutting through another of the small drakes as they tried to retreat slightly. Nymoria was left facing just the remaining two, her blade held shakily in her hand as she forced herself to breath, to calm herself down. I’m fine, see? A wound, but nothing that I can’t overcome…this isn’t the real world…I’m fine…

She repeated the words over and over in her head until her blade was stable in her hand once more, allowing her the control she needed in order to take the fight to the drakes again. There were two left, and Nymoria knew she could bring them both down quickly if she didn’t give them the chance to regroup, to come together against her fully.

Whether it saw her coming or not, Nymoria wasn’t sure, but as the first of the creatures rushed to get off to her right side, she found herself slashing through the opening of the remaining partner drake. Her sabre soared through its form, cutting it neatly in two and allowing it to disappear in a shatter of shards that glittered against the sky. Nymoria knew that, were it not such a gruesome act, the explosion of shards would almost be pretty to the eye.

The remaining drake hovered slightly in the distance, as if no longer certain that it wanted to engage her in a fight. She turned toward it, levelling her sabre and preparing herself to finish the thing off. She’d come this far, she wasn’t about to let it get away. I think…this will be one of my last fights though, if I can help it. I’m exhausted…this one took a lot out of me. She felt herself grinning in response, before throwing a cautionary look towards Nemo. The man stood off to the side, watching the fight as one would watch any sport, a smile upon his face and a look of utter relaxed aura surrounding his form.

At least he doesn’t seem upset at all. That’s a…good sign, I think? She wondered if she’d somehow reconciled with the man, before realising it really didn’t matter. She’d done what she’d managed, and the rest was out of her control. For the moment, at least, they seemed to be getting along – and that was enough.

She breathed a sigh of relief as the final creature exploded into nothingness. Her sabre shook in her hand, and she slowly sheathed the weapon as she forced herself to relax. The fight had lasted far longer than she had expected – the small drakes proving agile and capable, leaving her chasing after them more than she would have liked to have done in a perfect scenario. Still, she’d come out victorious with little in the way of actual danger to herself, which brought a measure of pride to her for a few moments.

’Well done! I was a bit worried there for a moment, I’ll admit, but you pulled through without any real concerns!’ Nemo beamed his support and his own version of pride in response to her success, and Nymoria found herself smiling politely in return. She settled onto the ground again, leaning back against another rock as she let her hands fall to her side, the exhaustion taking over now that the adrenaline had begun to subside. ’A rest is well deserved, I would think. I was talking to a few of the other occupants in the area, and apparently these small groups of false dragons have been harassing them, so you’ve done them a real favour. Thank you.’

Are you just saying that to make me feel better? She signed the words and sent a small wink towards Nemo which had little enthusiasm or effort behind it, a commentary more upon her exhaustion than her humour towards the entire thing. She forced a smile, for good measure, to ensure that he at least knew that she wasn’t faking the joke behind the words – and hoped that he would pick up on that.

’Make you feel better? Why, I’m hurt! To think that I would lie to someone as powerful and capable as you!’ Nemo grinned broadly as he finished his false insulted behaviour, before breaking out into a laugh with Nymoria. The two relaxed slightly as their agreement upon the humour of the situation became apparent, and she felt a bit better about their overall situation. Sighing, she sank into the rock a bit more, determined to get the most out of her seated position as she could, and not wanting to rise from it any time soon.

I love coming to the garden, Nemo. It’s so peaceful. She signed the words suddenly, without thinking. It was an earnest statement, and one that was more a slip of her own personal thoughts than she had meant to share – but it seemed to cause immense happiness within Nemo, as he smiled more sincerely. His eyes moved around the garden, as if taking it in for the first time, before he responded.

’I’m glad to hear that. I made it so that people could enjoy it, you know? She let the silence stretch as she continued digging through the dirt, trying to find anything further that could be useful during her time here. She knew that she would have to leave soon – there was no point overstaying her welcome, and she’d already been here for quite some time. It’s been a busy, but successful day at least. And…it was nice to see Nemo, especially when he’s happy like this. I wonder… She let the thoughts drift off, knowing where they were going, and that she would have no immediate answer to them. In time, she might test her theory, but for now she needed to finish her time in the garden, and then return to her home.

I should probably be heading out soon. She signed the words towards Nemo, and anticipated his upset at her desire to leave. She was surprised, however, when he seemed to nod in agreement before looking up towards the sky, as if checking the position of the sun.

’Yes, you’ve been here for quite some time already. I must say, it has been pleasurable to have you stay so long and keep me company! But…I also know that you are busy, and there are many things that you must get done…so once you’re ready to go, I’ll guide you back to the exit.’ Nymoria found herself stumped at the agreeable, friendly response, and she could see his grin widen at her obvious confusion. ’But! You have to promise that you’ll come visit me again, just like today. It doesn’t have to be tomorrow, or the day after…but sometime soon, would be nice. Once you have time.’

Agreed. She smiled in return to his kind words, letting her hands sign the quick motion before laying her head back against the rock and combing her hands through the dirt once more.

Her hand bumped something as she was pawing through the dirt, and Nymoria jumped in response. The gems and assorted other metallic items that she had been finding had felt hard, for certain, but there was something about the feel of this hidden item that had been different. She’d pulled her hand back suddenly, causing Nemo to glance in her direction as she sat up and glanced down at the area. When nothing had immediately jumped to attack her, she’d begun moving the dirt around the area, pulling it away from what she had bumped into, and trying to figure out what it was.

That’s a chest. Like a treasure chest. These things often contain good items…if I’m lucky. She glanced up at Nemo, as if asking his permission to open it and see what was inside. He nodded enthusiastically, as if as surprised by it as she was, and as interested to see what lay within the confines of the chest. Carefully, she moved her hands around towards the front of it, looking for the releases that would allow it to pop open and show them what lay within.

The glimmering pile within the chest seemed to sparkle before Nymoria’s eyes, and she found herself grinning happily up at Nemo. The man, standing behind her now that they’d moved to see what was within the chest, seemed almost as excited as Nymoria herself was – more so, if she looked carefully at his features. The expression on his face was more than enough to convince Nymoria that it was something irregular for him to find, and she leaned back to let him sort through it fully.

’It is always wonderful to see what the garden surprises us with…’ He smiled towards Nymoria, glancing through it all before stepping back and letting her collect the items. ’I’m glad you were able to find so much to assist you on your journey. I’m assuming it’s time to head back, now?’

Nymoria gave a soft nod, collecting everything before standing and stretching. Little more was said between the two of them as they made their way back to the original floor. Nemo continued onwards with her, escorting her all the way back to the gates of the settlement, before preparing to depart ways.

’Thank you for visiting me, Nymoria. It was a pleasure to host you, and a rather enjoyable day…I hope that we can do it again some time!’ She gave a small bow and a confirmation of her intent before turning towards the settlement. When she glanced back to say goodbye in truth to Nemo, she noticed that the NPC was already gone, leaving her alone at the gateway, and wondering if he’d been there at all.
