[Clash Of Blades Season 1] Week 2: Jomei & Wulfrin vs Acanthus & Kiyabu

Recommended Posts

Wooden pews lined with soft fabric, not arranged in their normal rows with an alley in between, instead placed in a circle around the central podium, turning it much more into a stage, than a place of Worship. The stained and colored fragments of glass painted their beautiful picture along the marble-like, smooth flooring of granite and stone. It was a hell of a thing, to convince the Clergy of this cathedral to honor the traditions of the Players. Nothing that a few favors couldn't work out, and the assurance of supervision. Such supervision was already present here, speaking of which. Armored and armed Crusaders in their large, round helmets, the symbols of their religion carved into visors for them to see out of stood with their swords pointed down, their hands on the pommels of those blades. Vigilant, and steadfast in their discipline and duty. Elders of the church present in a balcony far above, presumably a sort of cat walk that lead to rooms where those authorities could conduct meetings. Those obscured pathways working for an impromptu audience section for those. While the rest of those who would attend - be they citizen of Taft, Player, or a servant of the Lord Regent - would be able to find a comfortable seat in the rearranged benches of worship.

'Show time. Again.' The thought was it's own assurance. It was time to show the face of entertainment. Your announcer, Kindling, turned around to gesture with a flair, his voice raising to echo and bounce off of every far off surface throughout the Grand Cathedral. This would be his second time for the day, and what a fucking blast it would be.

"GOOD MORNING TAFT, AND PLAYERS!"

Looking to add just a bit more energy in comparison to his last week's introduction. Finding his verbal and metaphorical footing for this new role he was taking on. "I will reiterate for those just joining us, and for this combat's participants. This week, we have something special planned for you all. The church setting isn't just for show. You see, in here, I intend to have vows spoken, for two pairs of Combatants to have each other's backs in victory, and in defeat. Through Status Effects, and Full Health. Until 0 HP - or Conceding - do them part." A quick tilt of his chin sideways and up to see if the Elders of the church would appreciate his attempt at humor. Or, at the very least, let it slide for the sake of entertainment and this tradition of theirs. "The wonderful Minako and I have drawn up combatants into pairings, where they will face off against two together. Their condition to victory will be to defeat both of their enemies. We took the time, and even got Dinners and lunchtime snacks made prior to this engagement, with the hope that it brought each pair just a little closer together..." A brief pause to check for the audience reaction, followed by that of an attempt to read the expressions before continuing. "Aaanddd without further ado, let's introduce our very first fight of the day..."

His left hand opened and beckoned to his left side, out stretched, with the fingers spread out. "This week will feature a rematch! The winner of that first match is here, in his pumpkin colored hair, and dressed like Robinhood, perhaps a Hero that will steal the heart of his comrade; A man who has fought by his side in the labyrinths of the upper floors - one who went out with a BANG against Morningstar - It'ssss Jomei and Wulfrin!" Stepping back for their cue to enter the stage, giving some time for fanfare, and for the booming bouncing of his voice to finally stop rattling the candles far above them in this largely open and empty sanctum. Now it was time for the other side. His left arm lowered, right arm now raising to gesture to the other pair.

"And in this corner, we have the other side of last week's match up repeating here. A woman who looks great in armor, and takes a punch to the face better than any player I have ever seen, equal parts a planner, and an agent of chaos - She stands beside a newcomer to the entire scene, a name unknown even to me, until he stood his own against one as legendary as NIGHT, and gave her fun banter the entire fight, It'ssss Acanthus and Kiyabu. Now moving to allow the other side to take the stage.

"Now, love is a battlefield, and despite your previous interaction, please try not to kiss too much here. Unless it's more fists kissing faces, that was awesome." Specifically referring to, and looking between, Jomei and Acanthus with that comment. One last check to all four combatants. Giving them time to speak. Then his arm raised above his head, initiating the timer. "Try to keep your eyes on their weapons, above the belt."

"On my mark. Get ready. Get set..."

And in a moment, the first fight of the day.

Welcome to the second week of Clash of Blades - Doubles! There has been several changes from last week, so please be sure to have the Informational at the ready!
Another soft reminder to NOT use outside items. Please use only the items purchased in the Event Shop.

  Hide contents

  • First, character set up! A lot of sheets and stats were hidden from us last week which made policing stats and checking numbers difficult at times as we had to reach out or sometimes use guesswork to determine what happened. This week, and for all other weeks, we are requiring you to link your Clash of Blades stat sheet in your opening post. Failure to do so could potentially result in a forfeit, and loss on your record.
  • Second, initiative has been altered! Each player will get 1 initiative roll each. The player with the highest roll will act first. Then whoever on the other team has the highest roll will go second. Then the other two will go off, alternating between teams. Following an ABAB pattern. Example:
  Hide contents

Kindling and Minako are on Team A
Alkor and Zelrius are on Team B

Kindling rolls a 17, Minako a 6, Alkor a 15, and Zelrius a 7.
Kindling won, and goes first, followed by Alkor who rolled the highest on his team. Minako next, followed by Zelrius.

In addition to the turn order, we are no longer allowing people to reuse their initiative rolls for combat. If you are the last roll, and win the initiative we will allow you to use the same post but not the same roll. You will need to re-roll to attack.

  • Third, please make mention of your dinner date! This is Valentine's Day after all! No matter how awkward it may have been or romantic it is please lean into these themes and Role-Play to your hearts content. ~♥

Before setting foot on this sacred ground for the double duel, Kiyabu took a moment to turn his attention to his partner for this match, Acanthus. The air was thick with anticipation, the grand cathedral buzzing with the energy of an eager audience. "Let's give them a grand display~!" He murmured to her, his voice a delicate whisper that carried the weight of excitement and determination. He extended his hand towards her, a silent invitation for her to grasp tightly, sealing their partnership as they prepared to take the stage.

As Acanthus clasped his hand, the signal was given for the fanfare to commence. The music began to play, an elegant yet holy ballad that perfectly captured the theme of the event. The melody was a tapestry of sound, weaving together notes of grandeur and reverence, setting the stage for what promised to be a spectacular display.

Together, they walked along a path lined with glistening pink and red crystals, their shimmering surfaces reflecting the light in a dazzling array of colors. The crystals formed a corridor of brilliance, but they were only a prelude to the true spectacle that lay ahead. For in that moment, the crowd's attention was captivated by Kiyabu's attire—a magnificent icy blue outfit adorned with intricate patterns of snowflakes and shards of crystal. It was a sight to behold, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that had gone into its creation.

Yet, Acanthus was not to be outdone. Her fiery red dress was a masterpiece in its own right, adorned with real flames that danced and flickered around her like a passionate, living entity. The flames moved in harmony with her, a fiery aura that lent her an ethereal, almost otherworldly presence. Together, they were a striking duo, their contrasting elements of ice and fire creating a visual symphony that left the audience breathless.

With the stage and music set, Kiyabu and Acanthus began a well-choreographed dance, their movements a seamless blend of grace and precision. As they twirled and spun, their steps were synchronized, each motion carefully calculated to complement the other. The dance was more than just a performance; it was a display of unity and synergy, a prelude to the battle that awaited them.

As they moved, the magic of the moment began to unfold. The icy blue outfit that Kiyabu wore started to transform, the intricate designs melting away like snow under the warmth of the sun. Beneath the façade of elegance lay his true combat gear, revealed gradually as the dance progressed. It was a symbolic shedding of artifice, a transition from the realm of performance to the battlefield, where skill and strategy would reign supreme.

The audience watched in awe as the transformation took place, the music reaching a crescendo that echoed the rising tension and excitement. Kiyabu and Acanthus continued their dance, their partnership a testament to the power of collaboration and the beauty of duality—ice and fire, grace and strength, preparation and spontaneity.

As the final notes of the ballad faded into the air, they stood ready, their gazes locked on the challenge that lay before them. The stage was set, the atmosphere electric with anticipation, and Kiyabu and Acanthus poised to deliver a performance that would be remembered long after the echoes of their footsteps had faded from the sacred ground of this Grand Cathedral.

Any person can tell you that a good song and a good story have the same form. But it takes a performer to tell you why.

Scene one: exposition. The explanation; the stakes, neatly written out in a way that the audience is meant to understand. The swordswoman and her partner walked into the Cathedral, hand in hand. It would have bothered Acanthus; she hadn’t much cared for physical contact at all. She took a glance into the stranger’s eyes. He was mathematically attractive; she could make the dance convincing.

The stakes? There were none. Who cared who died in the ring? In this cathedral, zero health meant nothing. A quick splash of water, a brief moment to catch your breath, and everything was alright. She would appreciate facing off against Jomei, but there were too many variables to consider the fight a chance at besting him. Wulfrin was a powerhouse, and Kiyabu could hold his own… but out of the four of them, he was the only one who had not been at the last floor boss.

It doesn’t matter, she told herself. Today is about giving the audience a show. Something better than the last one. A brief vision of Acanthus, breathless, screaming, borderline feral. Unbecoming, she thought with some measure of disdain. She’d deserved what she got—facedown in the dirt, corpse dragged off in humiliation. And the audience had deserved better. So better they would get.

The music swelled; the doors opened. She gave one last look to her partner. “I enjoyed our dinner,” she whispered. It was a white lie—her body still rejected Cardinal’s food for some inscrutable reason. But that was information unfitting for a stranger. “Why don’t we give them a dance to remember?” The light washed over them, and the girl’s dress erupted in splashes of light and fire. It had been Kiyabu’s idea—and his handiwork, as a nascent tailor. Though the finale, yet to come, had been her own twist on the concept.

Moving to center stage, she took his hand, and the two danced. Kiyabu started with the lead—as was tradition. She was his willing partner, allowing herself to be led through the steps with a firm hand. Then, a quick switch gave her control. The performer in her had requested it: when Kiyabu told her he wanted the theme to be unity, she had made the suggestion. It could hardly be unity with only one lead, no? Kiyabu was leading again, spinning her out before taking her into a dip. Acanthus could have never done something like this, she thought smugly. She was a terrible dancer.

The music was nearing its end. It was time for the finale. Kiyabu thrust her out for one final spin to send her away. The dancer kept contact for as long as possible, brushing the tips of his fingers as she whirled into position. Straightening out, raised her hand. “Aincrad,” she called out to the crowd. “I’d like to thank you all for being here today. What a beautiful crowd to watch this fight today. And the participants aren’t half bad either.” Her muscles clenched as she tried an unfamiliar move. She winked, bringing her hand up to her mouth to blow a kiss to Kiyabu. After thinking for a moment, she repeated the gesture to the announcer. “Can’t forget the announcer! I hope I get you next round too. Don’t tell Minako though.” She laughed lightly, winking again. "Although if you do, I think I could work out an apology with her."

Laying it on thick. Too thick. Acanthus would hate this.
Who cares? Hate it quietly. You’re putting on a show, so give the audience what they want. You can go and hide away like a recluse after the fight.

“But I can’t really fight in a dress, can I?” In a flash, botan appeared, sweeping downwards across her arm. It was a calculated strike—just enough to draw blood and proc—

You cannot damage a player in a safe zone.

Panic exploded in her mind—you cannot damage a player in a safe zone—she fought to breathe—you CANNOT damage a player in a safe zoneit’s ok, Acanthus, you cannot damage

I’m not Acanthus right now. It’s just the performer that’s left.

The digital spray of too-bright blood still hung in the air. She had frozen for maybe half a second. To the audience, it had been nothing more than a dramatic pause.

“Once the dress comes off, we’re going to burn this place down.”

The edges of her dress began to wisp with smoke. The once-contained fire, glamoured in a careful process, was now getting eaten up by real flames, ones she had provoked from her shield when she damaged herself. The flame aura wrapped around her, eating away at the fabric in a spiral, revealing the fireproof armor underneath. Spreading her arms as if enjoying a warm summer ray, she allowed the flames to consume her. Not that they could—they weren’t real, after all.

The smoke cleared, revealing Acanthus to the audience, and to her partner. She wiped the ashes from her face, and gave the audience one last warm, welcoming, and very practiced smile. Then, turning her gaze to her opponents, she discarded her emotions, ready to give one more performance.

Wulfrin left the Trackers Alliance HQ for the grand cathedral early in the morning. He was one of the first matches of the day along side his doubles partner Jomei. The theming was framed around the Valentine's day celebrations, despite Aincrad definitely not being synced to the real world calendar. Wulfrin walked into the arena at the announcement of their duo still munching away at his small to-go box of Spaghetti and Meatballs. He had felt a little uncomfortable on arrival to the feast's location as it was decorated as if he was supposed to have a romantic date night. This was where he found out his partner was Jomei. The two had talked strategy for a bit, but it wasn't a long conversation as the two had already fought side by side a few times at this point.

Wulfrin didn't expect his opponents to be so extravagant. Acanthus and Kiyabu danced across the arena in elegant attire that left Wulfrin wishing he had held on to his tux from his wedding, alas he was woefully underdressed. He felt more at home once the combat gear came out to the forefront. Wulfrin scarffed down the last of his meal hastily. In stark contrast to his vibrant armor from week one, Wulfrin was in his raid gear. His Fallen Angel Garb serving as the largest contrast to the beautiful colors on display. Icingdeath sat at his side ready for battle. As the final announcements were made, Wulfrin readied himself for battle.

BRRRNNGGG

The small, circular clock shook on the bedside as a hammer bounced back and forth between two bells in rapid succession. A reluctant hand made its way out from the sheets, like a snake emerging from its den, and pressed down the top of the clock to halt the alarm.

The temptation to sleep in was looming, but his responsibilities ultimately won.

Last week's bout against Acanthus had really taken the wind out of his sails. Her words played over and over in his head like a broken record player, just out of reach. While the physical damage from their duel had healed, the wounds from her words had yet to scab over. So when he saw that he would be paired up with Wulfrin to fight Acanthus and another, by the name of Kiyabu, he was reminded of what she said all over again.

That bed was looking inviting again..

***
An early morning duel, he personally preferred the later timeslot he was given last week. He wasn't going to complain, gives him the day to watch the fights and rest up. Before the fights would start, however, Jomei met with his partner to talk strategy and enjoy a nice, romantic breakfast of.. spaghetti and meatballs? A delicate, white table cloth adorned with rose petals, and three flicking candles. One plate with two forks, no surprise there. The only thing missing was the Italian waiters singing Bella Notte"What, no flowers?" he teased Wulfrin with a smile before sitting down across from him. The two enjoyed their meal and talked strategy. He told him all he knew from his last fight with Acanthus as well as what to possibly expect from Kiyabu.

"Wait." Jomei paused Wulfrin as he slurped up a noodle, "You and Morningstar both prepared that Finale item? I'm mad I missed it."
***

The pomp and circumstance, delivered by someone who seemed entirely against such splendor just a week ago, began to settle. Their host would call for the start of the match with a wave of his hand. "Hit 'em fast" Jomei would say to Wulfrin without turning chin to look in his direction. In a flash of green, he was gone. Candles flickered and dimmed as he sped around the perimeter of the makeshift fight pit. The ornate blade of Fragarach grew darker as if collecting the shadows cast by the tiny flames above. His first target; Acanthus. Disable the enemy he knew first, take a moment to see how Kiyabu handles himself. The little knowledge he had going into this fight pointed towards Acanthus being the more powerful one. So leaping from the outer edge of the arena, he would close in on the woman.

Olive eyes met with hers over the metal edge of her shield as he began to attack. A horizontal cut that she blocked easily, followed by a barrage of thrusts and stabs that he would sneak around her defense. Not this again, he thought, need to switch it up. Planting a foot, he would torque his body and pick up a leg, delivering a spinning heel kick into Acanthus' shoulder. He would not have much time to act before she picked herself back up, so he would need to act fast. The moment he found his balance again, his sword would strike forth, cutting deep into the armor on his opponent's back. The shadows that crept onto the blade seeped into the wound to deal a little extra damage on top of the stun that he applied.

After making such a grandiose entrance with his partner Acanthus, the echoes of their striking performance still resonating in the arena, Kiyabu shifted his focus to the task at hand. The energy in the air was electric, the anticipation palpable as the crowd settled into an expectant hush. The dazzling display of ice and fire had set the stage, but now it was time for the real test: the combat that would unfold between the two teams of duos.

Kiyabu's senses sharpened, his mind a whirl of strategy and instinct as he prepared for the fray. The arena, once a realm of elegance and artistry, transformed into a battlefield where skill and cunning would dictate the outcome. His heart beat steadily, a rhythmic thrum that matched the tempo of the silent countdown to the clash.

It was in this charged atmosphere that Jomei, one of their opponents, seized the initiative. With a swift, decisive movement, Jomei launched the first of many strikes, his intention clear and unrelenting. The suddenness of the attack caught Kiyabu off guard, a testament to Jomei's own agility and strategic acumen. Yet, Kiyabu was nothing if not adaptable, his reflexes honed by countless battles.

In the split second that followed, Kiyabu's instincts took over, guiding him in a dance of evasion and counterattack. His feet moved with agility, sidestepping the initial assault even as his mind raced to formulate a response. He knew that to survive, to thrive in this arena of champions, he would have to turn defense into offense with clever precision.

With a fluid motion, Kiyabu summoned his signature weapon—a dagger that materialized behind his back, concealed from view. The blade was an extension of himself, its weight familiar and comforting in his hand. He kept it hidden, waiting for the precise moment to strike, to exploit any vulnerability in Jomei's defense.

As the two combatants circled each other, their movements a testament to their skills, Kiyabu's keen eyes spotted an opening—a vital spot momentarily left unguarded by Jomei's maneuver. It was the kind of opportunity that demanded immediate action, a chance to turn the tide in his favor.

With a deft flick of his wrist, Kiyabu sent the dagger slicing through the air, aiming for the exposed target with unerring accuracy. The blade moved with silent efficiency, a whisper of steel against the backdrop of the arena's tense silence. It was a calculated risk, a testament to Kiyabu's willingness to seize any advantage, however fleeting.

As his dagger reached its destination, Kiyabu prepared for the counterplay that would inevitably follow. This was a battle not just of strength and speed, but of wits and strategy, where every move was scrutinized, every decision pivotal. Kiyabu's mind was a torrent of possibilities, each scenario playing out in rapid succession as he readied himself for whatever Jomei and his partner might bring next.

The crowd watched with bated breath, their eyes riveted on the unfolding drama. For Kiyabu, the duel was a dance—a complex interplay of offense and defense, of deceit and revelation. In this arena, amidst the clash of wills and the roar of anticipation, he fought not just for victory, but for the honor and pride shared with his partner Acanthus. Together, they would rise to the occasion, their synergy and skill shining through in this grand spectacle of combat.

The Clash of Blades: Week 2 was off to an explosive start. Wulfrin had suspected that he would be target number one given the outcome of his last match, but to his surprise, the new comer Kiyabu seemingly ignored him and charged for Jomei. With grace and agility, though lessened by the significantly bulkier armor of his Fallen Angel Garb, Wulfrin shifted like a shadow. Icingdeath hummed eager for its chance to strike. Wulfrin's blade sliced through the back of Kiyabu's calves in an attempt to slow the man down. It seemed to work as the familiar status marker of the stunned condition appeared next to his target's health bar. Wulfrin created distance between himself and the rest of the action so he could better assess their combatants' loadouts.

Wulfrin focused on the shifting bars scanning for familiar markers. One of the statuses on Acanthus made his heart sink. A small blue icon adorned with a crossed out snowflake meant that Acanthus had prepared for him far more than Wulfrin had expected.

Right Wulfrin thought to himself. Antifreeze is in play. Means the plan has to change.

Wulfrin had originally planned to double up on Acanthus with Jomei after hearing how their last bout went. Unfortunately, Wulfrin not being able to properly chain his disables was a significant drawback. Quickly he flashed a few hand signals to his partner: Hold the line. Antifreeze in play.

Her eyes flicked over to Wulfrin. Unlike Jomei, she had seen him in combat. Her assessment had been clear: dangerous—avoid at all costs. The plan was to burst down the duelist. She had hoped his fighting style would be more suited to one-on-one combat, and weaken in the face of two opponents. If she and Kiyabu committed to squaring off in parallel one on ones, it would be over too quickly. Wulfrin was dangerous, but Jomei was no slouch either. She’d recalled the gritty feeling of the arena’s sand, digging into her knees as she struggled to orient herself, hoping that this wasn’t the end, praying for one more chance. And being denied her chance. “I just hope everyone has fun!” Acanthus beamed brightly, tossing a careless smile to the crowd. She’d practiced her smiles in the mirror. The secret was making sure the edges curled just right, giving the eyes a natural cheerful squint.

While she was busy, a gust of wind raced towards her. Jomei was already on Acanthus, intent on taking her out of the picture. She held her ground, but the duelist struck like lightning, moving faster than the eye and never hitting the same weak point twice. Shaking off the stun with a flash of energy, Acanthus pouted. “Right back to last week, Jomei? I really think we should see other opponents.” Crowds adore the “spurned lover” trope. A little over the top, but they don’t seem to mind. “Just as long as you don’t last as long as last time. You really know how to tire a girl out.”

The words felt strange as they came out of her mouth. She was unfamiliar with the playful banter, much less anything risqué. Still, she’d lost the right to be herself last round when she failed after a long, brutal, and embarrassing display of emotions. By comparison, debasing herself like this was barely an embarrassment. And a much better show to boot.

One foot gently crossing over the other, Jomei initiated in a sort of dance with his opponent. Though they kept enough space between them to fit the entire supper table and not just the J-Man. Their ballad was ultimately cut short as the unfamiliar player rushed in. Having closed the circle more than the ginger had realized, Jomei hardly had enough time to react as Kiyabu summoned a short blade from behind his back.

No good, gotta move!

Shifting his weight onto his back leg, he prepared to leap backwards and hopefully avoid the blade as it hummed with the power of a sword art. That small sacrifice in his evasion wasn't enough for him to get out of the way in time, and the knife sliced through his thigh. "Ack" he cursed as his boot hit the ground again, a familiar numbing sensation washing over. A stunning sword art, he should have expected. Probably was Acanthus' strategy to -

Another quick attack rocked the man who was still locked into place. A red gash so easily painted onto his form, the artist Acanthus pulling back her blade. Was the plan to eliminate him and go for Wulfrin after? Speaking of Wulfrin, the player was a bit slower to jump into the fray, but his help was appreciated nonetheless. A taste of their own medicine, Wulfrin's blade was able to shut Kiyabu down, knocking a chunk of their health out in the process. Now! He shouted within his mind as he prepared his counter attack. Eyes flashed white for just a moment, cloak billowing outwards as the power granted by defeating the Forgotten Time King sent out a shockwave centered on him.

Like shooting fish in a barrel, Jomei easily brought the tip of his rapier up to the stunned man's chest. If they were so willing to put on a spectacle.. maybe we should as well. Remind them who they are dealing with. Lips curled into a smirk as his rapier began to glow. A quick three slashes, enough to carve deep into Kiyabu's chest in the shape of a jagged J.  "Jomei, by the way. Nice to meet you." Eyes looked down at his painted canvas. "Left you a little reminder, in case you forget." Winking at Kiyabu, a little friendly banter of his own, he rushed towards Acanthus.

"Wulf, switch with me! I'll knock her down, you finish him off!"

Even though Kiyabu had steeled himself for the inevitable counterattack, anticipating the swift retribution that would follow his own strike, the reality of the assault still caught him off guard. His instincts were keen, his reflexes sharp, but sometimes the unpredictability of battle held the upper hand. The next attack came with a force that was both unexpected and overwhelming, a testament to the prowess of their opponents.

The blow struck Kiyabu's body with the weight of a hammer, driving the air from his lungs and leaving him momentarily stunned. Pain radiated from the point of impact, a reminder of the relentless nature of the duel he was engaged in. "Argh!" The sound escaped him, a guttural acknowledgment of the punishment he had just endured.

As he staggered back, his mind raced to regain its footing, to shake off the daze that threatened to cloud his judgment. His gaze shifted to the warrior responsible for the strike, a figure who moved with the precision and confidence of a seasoned combatant. It was Wulfrin, a name that conjured both respect and camaraderie in Kiyabu's mind. They knew each other well enough to share a mutual understanding, a bond forged in the fires of friendly competition and shared battles past.

"Not going easy, huh..." Kiyabu murmured, a hint of playful banter threading through his words despite the situation. His voice carried a note of familiarity, an acknowledgment that in this arena, there was no room for half-measures or restraint. Wulfrin was no mere opponent; he was an acquaintance, a fellow warrior whose skills Kiyabu respected and admired.

The battlefield was a place where respect was earned, where every strike and parry carried the weight of past encounters and shared experiences. Kiyabu knew that Wulfrin's approach was not one of malice, but of respect—a recognition of Kiyabu's own capabilities and the understanding that anything less than full effort would be an insult to their shared history.

In the brief respite offered by their exchange, Kiyabu took a deep breath, forcing his body to respond, to rally against the effects of the blow. His mind was a whirl of strategy and anticipation, each thought a step in the dance of combat that continued to unfold around them. He knew that to succeed, he would need to draw upon every lesson learned, every skill honed, and every ounce of resilience he possessed.

The arena, once again alive with the roar of the crowd and the clamor of combat, became a theater of possibilities. Kiyabu felt the adrenaline coursing through him, a reminder of the stakes and the challenges that lay ahead. With a determined gleam in his eye, he prepared to continue the battle, to engage with Wulfrin and his partner in a contest that promised to test the very limits of his endurance and ingenuity.

In this space, where friendship and rivalry intertwined, Kiyabu knew that every move mattered, every decision carried weight. Yet, amidst the chaos and intensity, there was also a sense of exhilaration—a joy in the challenge and a thrill in the fight, shared between warriors who understood each other in a way that transcended words.

WUlfrin weaved around his opponents with skill and grace. Surprisingly enough, his opponents seemed more focused on Jomei than him. Wulfrin would use this to his advantage, choosing to focus on the weak link of the opposing team.  Wulfrin took another large chunk out of Kiyabu's health bar with a well placed strike of Icingdeath. Wulfrin had the up and comer set up for a combo finisher that would guarantee his elimination on Wulfrin's next strike. All Wulfrin had to do was hope that Jomei could hold out through the incoming barrage.

Jomei and Wulfrin were on good pace to sweep this week's matchup. The major mistake of their opposition was focusing solely on Jomei. Given Wulfrin's track record of removing his opponent's ability to counter attack should have been priority one, but that wasn't his place to criticize their tactics. Wulfrin and Jomei's plan wasn't exactly different. The question was could Wulfrin and his partner seal the deal.

Things were not looking good. Putting antifreeze on her armor had just caused Wulfrin to hone in on Kiyabu. It had been a good move, and one Acanthus needed to put a stop to. “Sorry, Jomei, I’ve gotta split.” She flashed him a quick smile before kicking up a cloud of dirt to disengage. “But I’m sure we’ll cross blades again.”

Wulfrin had just finished a punishing combo that left Kiyabu on his back foot. It looked like he was preparing for another one. She tried getting his attention. “Wulfrin! It’s been too long. Don’t suppose you can spare me a little time, can you? Kiyabu deserves a little break.” She hoisted her shield into position, and charged him. Acanthus threw a predictable series of swings, trying to shake things up at the last minute. When she finished the combo high instead of low, it did just enough to break his defenses momentarily. The stun connected, and Wulfrin’s body slowed as it fought the status effect. Cautiously, Acanthus backed up to regroup with Kiyabu. She suspected that Wulfrin would be prepared enough to clear the stun. It would be foolish to overreach and risk a fatal counterattack.

"Wha-?" Blinded momentarily by a cloud of dust that, by some holy power of this church, remained undisturbed during this entire fight until just this moment. Allergies weren't a thing he had to deal with in Aincrad, thankful for that, but holy church dust into the eyes, nose, and mouth weren't exactly pleasant and still spawned a sneeze. Covering his mouth and nose with one hand, he would swipe his rapier through the air to dissipate it. Hirru and him had fought a fog monster after all, shouldn't be too outrageous to destroy a dust cloud.

Wulfrin had followed suit with the plan and went after a stunned Kiyabu. Jomei, on the other hand, had been busy keeping Acanthus off of his ass. There were a lot of stuns being thrown around, most of them with abilities to shake them off - save for Kiyabu, who was the unlucky victim here. After another unorthodox attack - second week in a row - she made a break for Wulfrin in an attempt to save her companion. "Oh, I don't think so." Jomei would say after Acanthus as he lunged backwards, powering up his charge skill.

Pounding footfalls as he rushed at his opponent, full sprint. "I'm not done with you yet!" he would shout as he leapt into the air above Acanthus. As Fragarach ignited with a golden aura, it too embraced the shadows and imbued with a dark energy. "Hyaaa!" Launching himself downwards at Acanthus, like a perfectly precise artillery strike, his rapier would pierce the small of her back through to the other side.

Realizing his earlier mistake of not focusing on the main threat, who had remained relatively unscathed throughout the battle, Kiyabu knew he was in a precarious position. His eyes darted to his own health bar, which hovered alarmingly in the orange to red range—a clear indication that another well-placed strike could be the end for him in this match. The situation was dire, the stakes high, yet Kiyabu remained composed, his mind racing with strategies to prolong their chances.

"I know this might only prolong the duel, but we should at least try to hold out a bit longer." He murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. His words were a quiet vow to himself and a call to action for his partner, Acanthus. Sensing the urgency, she moved with swift precision, stepping into the fray to force Wulfrin back, creating a momentary reprieve for them to regroup.

With a few precious seconds to breathe, Kiyabu and Acanthus fell back together, their camaraderie a silent testament to their shared resolve. As they regrouped, Kiyabu reached into his inventory, retrieving a small stash of arena-approved chocolates. The chocolates were more than just a sweet treat; they held the promise of a slight reprieve, a chance to recover some of their dwindling strength.

"Looks like we're on the backfoot, Little Lady." Kiyabu admitted, his tone resolute yet tinged with a hint of resignation. He gestured to his health bar, the numbers a stark reminder of the grim reality they faced. "And judging from my health bar, I don't have much hope of surviving the next strike..."

Despite the gravity of the situation, Kiyabu's words carried a note of respect and camaraderie. "But I have to say it was quite exhilarating to fight alongside you." His gaze met Acanthus's, the sincerity of his statement clear in his eyes. The bond forged in the heat of battle was one that transcended the immediate danger, a testament to the strength and trust they shared as partners.

As a gesture of camaraderie and hope, Kiyabu offered Acanthus a Valentine's chocolate from his collection. The gesture was simple yet profound, a token of gratitude and solidarity. Beyond the sentimental value, the chocolates held a practical benefit—the added effect of healing some of their wounds, a much-needed boon in the midst of their struggle.

The chocolate, wrapped in ornate packaging, was a symbol of the unexpected moments of lightness and kindness that could arise even in the midst of chaos. As Acanthus accepted the offering, the shared moment of respite allowed them to refocus, their spirits buoyed by the small yet meaningful act.

The opportunity presented itself perfectly. As Kiyabu finished offering out their gift to their partner, Wulfrin let loose a mighty roar, his eyes briefly changing hue to a more icy cerulean as Icingdeath's frigid aura began to expand. Wulfrin's stun expelled by his Forgotten King's Authority, he charged forward continuing his attack combo without missing a beat. Wulfrin's blade danced across Kiyabu's form before a holographic square oriented in the vertical position extended outward from the new commer's form.

"Checkmate," Wulfrin spoke softly as his opponent fell to the ground, their HP depleted. He turned his blade towards the remaining combatant, who stood their ground firmly alone and with a mere sliver of HP remaining. "You can walk away warm. Or I can put you on ice, if my partner here doesn't finish you first. Either way, it's your choice miss."

Wulfrin's blade remained leveled at Acanthus as he waited a response. Whether or not he got one depended on how she and Jomei reacted next.

Note: Wulfrin's HP reduced by 48 from Acanthus's attack. Stun applied as well.

Watching Kiyabu fall, the swordswoman clenched her jaw, processing her options. I could try and pull him back into the fight, but that leaves me open. Falling back to entrench also just delays the inevitable. I could maybe take one down if things go my way, but Jomei’s strike didn't leave me any room for mistakes. Carefully keeping her face a mask, she allowed herself time to seethe for a single moment before returning to what mattered. It’s all a performance. And you’ll get to go home soon.

Acanthus hoisted her sword and shield with a flourish. “There’s no fun in walking away warm. Not sure I’d deserve a place in the raid party if I threw down my weapons whenever things looked grim.” She stepped back carefully, doing her best to keep her back to the outside of the area, though it meant distancing herself from Kiyabu’s unconscious body. I guess the whole “unity” theme was just for show. “You think you’ve got your win in the bag? It’s still my job to make you earn it.”

Breaking into a sprint, she charged Jomei, hoping to catch him off-guard. She swung botan through him twice, chipping away his health before the inevitable counterattack.

I guess I’m done.

Freeing himself from the invisible bindings of a stun, Wulfrin charged at Kiyabu and finished him off. A clean strike, yet very powerful. The now unconscious body crashed to the floor, unmoving -save for their chest rising and falling with each breath. A relieving reminder that there was no threat of harm or death during these duels. A reminder that he could give it his all which, after his previous fight with Acanthus, he would require to defeat her yet again. Waning energy against an steel defense could be the end of him.

It was not defense that Acanthus relied on in that moment, but instead offense. A last ditch effort to try and down the ginger, level the playing field so to speak. However, Jomei knew her game, knew the damage she could deal. Not only that, but he had Wulfrin on his side. If this attack ended him, he would surely be able to finish the fight and claim their victory. So he went with trusting his instincts and did not attempt to dodge out of the way as Acanthus' botan carved into his chest.

With quick retaliation, Jomei drove the pommel of his rapier up into Acanthus' chin. Pulling his sword arm back across his chest, he would deliver a horizontal slash across her midsection. Alone, it would not have been enough to finish the job, but his sword art of choice would shatter pieces of her armor to leave her open to more damage. As the second of their opponents fell to the ground, Jomei would rise to his full height. A flourish of his rapier and it was returned to the housing on his hip.

Looking over his shoulder to Wulfrin, he would smile and nod. Another week, another win.
