[OP-F21] Challenging the Throne of the Forgotten!

Recommended Posts

Kiyabu sat staring at the character panel with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The server-wide tournament was the talk of the community, And he had been thrilled to make it through the first two rounds. However, the competition was only going to get tougher. As he glanced at the leaderboard, Kiyabu saw the names that sent a shiver down his spine—veteran players with reputations for being instrumental on the frontlines. He knew he needed to up his game significantly if he wanted to stand a chance against them.

His current skills and gear, Which had served him well so far, were simply not going to cut it in the upcoming rounds. As the players, That he would be up against had honed their skills over countless hours of real time battle. Their gear leagues above his own. Kiyabu realized that to level the playing field, he needed to acquire new skills and perhaps some decent equipment that could give him an edge.

As he leafed through pages of the player's handbook, searching for any opportunity to enhance his capabilities, his eyes landed on a quest that caught his attention. It wasn't just any quest—this one promised an "Extra Skill" as a reward, something that could prove invaluable in the battles to come. The skill was known among the community to be particularly useful against debuffs and other types of disablement, Which has been quite a tough time for him.

However, the quest's description came with a dire warning. The boss he would need to defeat was notorious for its difficulty. A creature of dark legends, it was said to be impervious to most attacks. Even at his best, Kiyabu doubted his ability to inflict any significant damage on it. The mere thought of facing such a formidable foe alone was enough to make him reconsider his options.

Realizing that he couldn't tackle this challenge on his own, Kiyabu started to consider his options. He needed help, but finding someone willing to face such a dangerous adversary for a stranger was no small feat. The community was filled with stories of players teaming up, forming alliances, and forging friendships through shared quests, but trust was a rare commodity, and asking for assistance was a gamble.

Kiyabu decided to venture into the bustling community. As he crafted a carefully worded notice on a quest board, Explaining his predicament and seeking allies who might be willing to join him in the quest. He knew he was asking a lot—facing a boss of such caliber was not for the faint-hearted—but he hoped his earnest plea would resonate with someone.

As he waited for responses, Kiyabu started to strategize. He poured over guides, and honed his skills in practice modes. Every moment was spent in preparation, knowing that any edge he could gain might be the difference between success and failure.

Days passed, and just as doubt began to creep in, a notification pinged. A response had arrived. It was from a player known for their prowess, a legend in their own right. They expressed interest in helping him, Through this difficult quest. Kiyabu's heart leapt at the possibility of a partnership.

With renewed determination, Kiyabu sent this player a message to meet him on the 21st floor. He'll be waiting near the warp crystal.

Someone had requested aid on a quest. Oscar had been so busy with the hustle and bustle of Clash of Blades that he'd all but forgotten to make his rounds. Reading the notice, his eyes fell upon the name. Kiyabu Hisao. Wasn't that the unfortunate fellow who got matched against NIGHT Round 1? He breathed out a laugh. Apparently someone had realized they needed to up their arsenal a little before they got too deep into the tournament. Better late than never, honestly.

So he sent his response and almost immediately received one back. Dude must have been waiting waiting. He felt a little bad for his part in leaving him in the lurch. The Forgotten Time King wasn't exactly a difficult fight. He recalled how he'd recently helped Abellio through the quest. Though it was much in a knee-jerk fashion, the two came out relatively unscathed. But it was a numbers game. Simple, with few mechanics. Just as impossible without the correct stats. Most people either got themselves a friend to carry them through or waited until they could handle it themselves.

But, really, there was so much more benefit to being carried through. The experience alone was far more valuable at a low level compared to a higher one. It would be one hell of a boost if they got it done early.

And so, he was off. In a flash of light, Oscar materialized in the caverns of Floor 21. This place in particular brought back many memories. As he scanned the plaza, he took the time to buff himself up. The usual assortments, designed to make the fight even less of a challenge than it already was. And it wasn't difficult to find Kiyabu - he was the only person here. Oscar strode up, offering the man a polite wave in greeting.

"Sorry it took so long to get back to you, dude," Oscar said by way of apology. "Let's go knock this thing out."

Oscar didn't really stick around for a response. He merely beckoned for Kiyabu to follow. Floor 21 used to be his old farming grounds. He knew every nook and cranny here. And how to avoid the patrolling mobs that most certainly would rip his companion to shreds. There were many tunnels and side paths to their destination, all of which Oscar made a point to lead Kiyabu through in case he needed to come back here on his own. They made good progress, though Oscar had to dispatch the odd spider here or there. At this point, he was uncertain whether or not they were after him or his new companion.

Eventually, they made it safely. They stood at the entrance of the arena, looking out towards the King upon his throne.

"Very important point, don't do anything to get Ha- WHAT IN THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?"

While waiting near the warp crystal, Kiyabu could feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins, a familiar companion in the moments leading up to a formidable challenge. This wasn't his first encounter with a boss wielding a health bar that dwarfed his own; memories of his clash with Terra Firma on the sandy dunes of Floor 5 flooded back, a reminder of the trials he had faced and overcome. The anticipation was a heady mix of excitement and trepidation, a prelude to the battle that awaited.

As Kiyabu stood poised, the ethereal glow of the warp crystal shimmered, announcing the arrival of Oscar, the veteran player who had graciously offered his assistance for this daunting quest. Before Kiyabu could even vocalize his gratitude or concerns, Oscar was already on the move, striding confidently toward the cavern that lay ahead.

"Oh!" Kiyabu exclaimed softly, surprised by Oscar's unspoken command—a subtle gesture that beckoned him to follow. There was a fluidity to Oscar's movements, a silent assurance that came from years of experience. Kiyabu fell into step behind him, his mind keenly alert as he took mental notes of every nook and cranny they traversed through. The path was a labyrinth of shadows and echoes, each twist and turn a potential haven for lurking dangers.

Oscar navigated the terrain with the ease of someone who knew its secrets intimately, his familiarity with the place evident in every decisive step. He took the initiative to handle any monsters that dared to challenge their advance, dispatching them with the practiced efficiency of a seasoned warrior. Kiyabu watched in admiration, the display a testament to Oscar's skill and determination.

As they reached the entrance of the arena, a sense of foreboding settled over Kiyabu. His eyes were drawn to a figure seated on a large stone throne at the far end of the chamber. The imposing presence exuded an aura of power and authority, its very stillness a harbinger of the challenge that lay ahead. ‘That must be the Forgotten Time King!’ Kiyabu thought, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement.

In a surge of impulsive courage, Kiyabu attempted to launch a sneak attack, driven by the belief that he could seize the element of surprise. But no sooner had he moved than he found his path blocked by Oscar, who intervened just in time to prevent the reckless action. “Huh!?” Kiyabu's surprise was palpable as he was brought up short, his momentum halted by Oscar's timely intervention.

The veteran player turned to face him, his expression a blend of sternness and concern. Kiyabu braced himself for the scolding that followed, Oscar's words a harsh reminder of the danger they faced. "I.. I'm sorry." Kiyabu stammered, chastened by his own rashness. "I got reckless and overconfident from my last field boss... This isn’t normally like me."

His voice was tinged with regret, a recognition of the folly that had nearly cost him dearly. He chastised himself for not being more cautious, more mindful of the perilous environment. The realization that, without Oscar's help, he might have met an abrupt end in the cavern was sobering.

Oscar's gaze softened slightly, his understanding tempered by the wisdom of experience. Kiyabu knew that the path of growth was often paved with mistakes, each misstep an opportunity to learn and improve. As they stood at the threshold of the arena, Kiyabu resolved to approach the battle with renewed focus and a clearer understanding of the stakes.

With Oscar by his side, Kiyabu took a deep breath, steeling himself for the confrontation with the Forgotten Time King. The lessons of past encounters and the guidance of his ally would be his compass as they faced the formidable foe together, a test of courage, teamwork, and resilience.

The man may not have realized it, but he'd almost given it up right out of the gate. Oscar had to move quickly, surging forward like a bullet to place himself in between Kiyabu and the boss. He didn't even have time to attempt a strike before the Forgotten Time King had raised his sword spear above his head and slammed it down. Ordinarily, Oscar would have done some fancy maneuver to dodge or absorb the blow. But if he had, the attack would have struck Kiyabu who was standing directly behind him. So rather than do any of that, Oscar chose to simply take the attack. The glowing golden sword spear bit into his shoulder, coming to a stop midway through his chest.

And were this not a mere videogame avatar, it would have been a mortal blow in and of itself.

Here in Aincrad, however, Oscar could handle attacks like that - no matter how grievous they appeared. He turned, wrenching the weapon out of his frame - leaving only an ugly crimson gash it is wake. With one fluid motion, he placed his hand on Kiyabu's chest and pushed. The man would skid backwards a few feet - well out of harm's way.

"When you get a Frontliner to help with a quest like this, keep yourself off the Hate chart," Oscar called over to him. "That was a crit. If you'd touched this guy, it would have targeted you. Wouldn't have been a damn thing I could've done to save you, man. You're one-shot to this guy." Oscar pivoted back around to face the boss. He stared up at the monarch as he shoved both hands into his pockets. Despite suffering such a telling blow, Oscar was not in the least bit bothered. "If you wanna come back later when you got the juice to take this boss all by your lonesome, by all means. But right now, I want you to sit back and watch. You got a whole lot to learn."

The atmosphere in the arena was electric, charged with tension and the echoes of combat. The boss they faced was unlike anything Kiyabu had ever seen before. Towering and ferocious, the Forgotten Time King was a formidable adversary, its presence alone exuding an aura of malevolence. Even the field boss of Floor Five, which Kiyabu had thought insurmountable at the time, paled in comparison to this monstrous entity.

Kiyabu's heart pounded in his chest as he replayed the events that had just unfolded. The battle had been fierce from the start, and despite his preparations, he found himself overwhelmed by the sheer power of their opponent. It was Oscar, the veteran warrior who had agreed to join him on this perilous quest, who had saved him from a critical blow. Before Kiyabu could even react, Oscar had stepped in, taking a devastating hit that left a jagged digital gash across his chest. The sight of it filled Kiyabu with a mix of gratitude and guilt.

As he stood there, grappling with his emotions, Kiyabu couldn't help but fixate on the wound Oscar had sustained on his behalf. It served as a stark reminder of his own recklessness, his lack of readiness for such a formidable battle. The weight of responsibility hung heavy on his shoulders, and he couldn't shake the feeling that his inexperience had put Oscar in harm's way.

In the midst of his turmoil, Kiyabu felt Oscar's firm hand against his chest, pushing him out of the immediate danger zone. The suddenness of the action caught him off guard, and he found himself skidding backward, out of the arena's direct line of fire. His mind raced as he tried to regain his footing, and he turned his gaze back to Oscar, who was now standing defiantly between him and the Forgotten Time King.

Oscar's voice rang out, cutting through the chaos of battle. He warned Kiyabu that the attack he had narrowly avoided would have been fatal, a one-shot that could have ended his run in the tournament then and there. The gravity of the situation settled in, and Kiyabu realized how close he had come to meeting a digital demise.

Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Kiyabu nodded resolutely in response to Oscar's words. "Alright! I'll try to learn as much as I can from you at this moment!" He shouted back, his voice carrying a newfound resolve. He knew that this was a chance not just to observe, but to absorb the strategies and skills of a seasoned warrior.

With every move Oscar made, Kiyabu watched intently, analyzing his techniques and the way he adapted to the boss's attacks. Oscar's agility and precision were awe-inspiring, and Kiyabu marveled at the way he maneuvered around the colossal foe, exploiting its weaknesses and anticipating its next moves.

The battle raged on, and Kiyabu's respect for Oscar grew with each passing moment. He realized that this experience was a crucible, a trial by fire that would either forge him into a stronger player or reveal the gaps in his abilities. As the fight continued, he vowed to absorb every lesson, honing his skills and preparing for the day when he would stand shoulder to shoulder with warriors like Oscar, ready to face whatever challenges the game had in store.

“Hm!” During this intense confrontation, He heard a familiar notification sound. As Kiyabu looked down to see a glowing gem beneath his foot.

Bosses didn't quite scratch that itch anymore. Even for something as fearsome and infamous as the Forgotten Time King, Oscar rarely found himself hard pressed. Their movements were almost scripted. Easy to predict, easy to dodge. If he even bothered to do so, really. Outside of Raids, they didn't bring enough stopping power to the table to make Oscar sweat. When all was said and done, for all of the flashiness and vaunted power, the boss was only barely scraping Oscar's health bar. Ten damage at a time when all was said and done. It was quite funny, really. The King blasted Oscar across the arena with a simple swipe of his Swordspear. Only for Oscar to dig his feet into the crater his body made and come screaming back into the fight with a counterattack of his own.

"It's a stat fight," Oscar called over to Kiyabu. "Gotta make sure you're stacking the right shit. For example-"

Oscar trailed off, twisting his body around another attack and driving his blade up through the King's chest in the same fluid motion. "Look at my health bar." The last attack had carved a healthy amount of from his health bar. But moments later, Battle Healing restored the lion's share of the damage. "I could stand here all day and it'd still be doing the same ten damage. Almost zero risk." The King brought his blade down upon Oscar in a powerful overhead strike. He didn't dodge this one, instead using it to prove his point. The blade carved through his chest, leaving a red gash in its wake. Again, Battle Healing regenerated the bulk of it.

"Most of the quest bosses - even the harder ones - just don't have the damage to overcome top level Mitigation."

The cavern was dimly lit, shadows dancing along the jagged walls as Kiyabu crouched down to retrieve the glowing gem nestled beneath his foot. The gem pulsed with a soft luminescence, casting a gentle light that illuminated his fingers as he picked it up. For a moment, he admired its beauty, its vibrant hue a stark contrast to the dark, foreboding environment around him. But his thoughts quickly returned to the task at hand as he heard Oscar's voice across the ruined arena.

Oscar, standing a moderate distance away, was the perfect picture of calm amidst the chaos. Despite the intensity of the battle, He seemed unperturbed, His experience lending him an air of confidence that Kiyabu found both reassuring and inspiring. Oscar called out, sharing insights on how to elevate one's combat skills to a higher level—a topic Kiyabu was eager to learn more about.

“That definitely sounds useful for raiding solo or aiding players like myself!” Kiyabu shouted back, his voice carrying an enthusiastic edge. The prospect of becoming self-sufficient, of being able to handle formidable foes on his own or lend meaningful support to allies, was enticing. As he spoke, his eyes roamed the cavern, scanning for more of the precious gems or ores that might be hidden in the shadows, treasures that could aid in his journey.

Oscar's teachings resonated with Kiyabu. The veteran warrior explained the importance of preparation, of knowing one's strengths and weaknesses, and of the strategic use of equipment and consumables. Kiyabu listened intently, absorbing the wisdom of someone who had walked this path before. It was a stark reminder of his earlier oversight, when he had charged into battle without the necessary precautions, driven by a reckless desire to prove himself.

“So as long as I'm prepared with the right equipment and consumables, I can possibly do something similar to what you're doing right now with this boss?” Kiyabu inquired, a hint of hope and curiosity lacing his words. He knew he had been careless, especially around the beginning, where his eagerness had nearly cost him dearly. Yet, he was determined to learn from his mistakes and transform them into stepping stones for future success.
