Individuals had rushed in every direction, attempting to get somewhere or make something of themselves in the momentary crisis that followed. Nymoria could still remember the silence that had stretched, intermittently mingled with flowing sounds, somehow washing over her and sweeping her into an arc of terror that she couldn’t quite explain to anyone else. It had been a rush of emotions, and she had wanted nothing more than to leave the floor behind and never return. Now, however, it felt empty. Not in the sense of a ghost town; collections of individuals still roamed through the area and made their way towards tasks that required completion for whatever purpose they may have had. Bodies still flowed along paths, some pre-determined while others were simply determined in the moment. Yet none of it had the same atmosphere as before, and Nymoria wondered if that was saying something about herself, or the change in the world around her. Hey, Nemo! She signed towards the NPC leaning against the gate’s wall, smiling towards her as he slowly recognised her features. The man looked identical to how he always did – the sunhat throwing minimal shade over his features. Nymoria had heard tell that he was seen here waiting for players, and had rushed out to find the truth behind it – as much to return to the garden for another round of preparation, as much as to speak with the NPC again. She still felt like there was a lot left behind, things that hadn’t entirely been said, following their last encounter. ’Hello again, Nymoria! Are you coming to the garden again today?’ Nymoria nodded in response to the question, and Nemo grinned broadly before turning to lead her out of the town itself. ’Excellent! It’ll be nice to have a familiar face to spend time with for the day. Someone that I’ve come closer to, connected with! Besides, I’m sure there will be lots of interesting things to find…and if you don’t mind, I have a small wolf problem that could use some attending to…’ He grinned sheepishly as he turned to see her reaction, and Nymoria simply laughed silently in response, before confirming she would help him out with his ‘wolf problem’. She knew what it meant – they’d spoken about it the last time they had come together, and the way in which he used to cull his garden’s rampant populations, when required. Thanks to you, the snapdragon population was significantly stunted – not to worry, there’s still lots of them, and they’re thriving as well as ever! The wolves have taken a bit of a bulge in their own population, as you know, but I’ve managed to introduce a new…’ Nymoria smiled as she walked along, listening to Nemo explaining the various changes he’d made, the adjustments to small pieces of the garden, and the general tweaking that went into ensuring it continued to thrive. In a way, it was interesting to watch his excitement about the most miniscule of items, explaining it as if it were some grandeur change in the entire world. He’s truly happy with the garden, and being engaged with it. It’s…nice to see. I wish I had his enthusiasm. She tilted her head and glanced out towards the open fields they were passing by as they followed the pathways leading away from the Town of Beginnings. In the far distance she could see clouds roiling over the mountain tops, a storm brewing that would likely strike the area in hours to come. They’d be long gone once it arrived, safe within the depths of Nemo’s hidden garden. Still, it made Nymoria wonder if she was prepared to return should it still be continuing once she left the garden behind. ’What are your thoughts on it?’ Nymoria flashed back to the present moment, realising with embarrassment that she had stopped listening to the man beside her as she stared at the storm. A look of puzzlement must have crossed her face, because Nemo started laughing before waving a hand towards the growing storm in the distance, as if to try and piece it all together for her. ’The storm, what are you thoughts about it? Simply wondering if I am going to get drenched in rain on the way home. It looks like it will be a big storm, and if I return when it is still raining, it could be cold and wet. Nemo seemed to pause and think about her commentary for a moment, before smiling himself and nodding in sudden understanding. Clearly it had escaped his mind that she had to walk all the way back to the town, and during a storm would be less than enjoyable. The two walked on in silence for a few steps, before he suddenly looked at her with a curious glint in his eyes. ’I have not considered before, but…once you leave, you have to traverse the entire distance back home, yes? Isn’t that…inconvenient? Sometimes it’s a long walk, and across dangerous terrain…would it not be safer to have some form of travel? Like a horse, or a carriage?’ It would be much easier. However it is hard to find a carriage, or a horse, let alone to have one await our return from your garden. Unless you are going to be offering services that would carry players home? Nymoria cocked her head to the side, holding off the grin for as long as she could while she waited to see Nemo’s answer. It was almost entirely what she had expected – his eyes going slightly wide and a fumbling of words as he tried to back peddle on his original thought process. Laughing, she reassured him that she hadn’t expected him to provide any such service in reality. It would be too complicated. We are fine walking, used to it in most cases. Nymoria 0 Posted February 22 Author #4 Share Posted February 22 ’Yes, I guess it would make sense that adventurers would be used to travelling!’ Nemo laughed at the obviousness of the situation and statement, before shaking his head and waving a hand towards the storm. ’I have a feeling it will be long gone, or not yet hit, by the time you’re done in the garden today.’ Nymoria glanced at Nemo, trying to figure out the meaning behind the sentence. She wasn’t sure if he had any real connection with the weather patterns, or anything else that occurred across Aincrad, and yet he somehow seemed certain of his declaration. Then again, why wouldn’t he be certain of it? He wouldn’t say it aloud unless he was certain, and being certain doesn’t mean that he’s going to be right. He could just as easily be wrong, and it has no real impact upon him. Nymoria shook her head at her own thoughts, knowing it was fruitless to let her mind go round and round in circles. It would get her nowhere, and she was certain it wouldn’t find any sort of conclusion. Well, I will be glad if I get to walk home dry. She grinned in tandem with her response, knowing that the humour would make the man laugh. A fact that didn’t disappoint her. Her attention was drawn away, however, as she spotted a familiar archway that led into a collection of stones and rocks; the entrance to Nemo’s garden becoming more and more familiar the more often she attended it. Even if it was located on different floors, Nymoria had begun to recognise familiar portions of it that carried over – though she was certain she’d never be able to find it without Nemo’s engagement and attendance. Cardinal and Aincrad would make sure of them. If only to keep us from abusing the area; to keep it fair for all. Passing through the gate gave Nymoria another sense of wonder. She was certain that no matter how often she visited the garden, she would always find it breathtaking in some means. Similar, and yet different. Always. The changes were never abrupt or overwhelming. It was as if Nemo took the opportunity to make small adjustments, minor shifts in the garden that would keep it appearing fresh and welcoming, without abolishing the perfection that already existed. Even from this distance, Nymoria could see the moss covering that gave them their name; more importantly, she could see the vast numbers of them ranging the fields, making a prime target for her daily cleansing that might become a ritual. ’As you can see, they have…populated a bit more than the last time you had visited…I would almost say they’re out of control, if I were to be entirely honest with you…’ The sheepish smile he gave confirmed for Nymoria that they were, in fact, out of control – and that Nemo wanted anything but to admit to that fact. Still, Nymoria was here now, and that meant she’d be able to at least help him reign it in ever so slightly. Drawing her sabre, she stepped towards the first and closest wolf pack, signing to Nemo with her right hand as she moved away from him. Same as last time? I shall disperse with the wolves, you watch? Nemo gave a nod in return, confirming her statement. Nymoria was more than happy to have the field to herself, and picked up her pace as she closed in the distance with the wolves. Teeth clashed with blade, and she could feel the reverberations as she dodged, deflected and slashed outwards with her own weapon. She wasn’t entirely sure where the mass of fur and moss began, and where her own form ended as she engaged with the pack. Seconds passed, seemingly lasting forever in Nymoria’s central focus on the conflict that carried her forwards, before she was out and beyond the forms of the wolves. Small trickles of digital blood covered her, a sign that she had been struck during the entire encounter. A quick glance up at her own health confirmed that she’d taken a rough hit, the health bar dipping significantly – but there was no sign of continual loss, which meant that so long as she was careful going forward, she could avoid being in danger. Still, it’s moments like these that make you feel safer with the natural recovery of health…ah well. She knew there was nothing to be done in the moment, other than to ensure she survived and came out alive – which meant killing the wolves, before they could kill her. A shift of movement caught her attention, drawing her back into the moment as she raised the sabre and deflected a claw aimed at her face. She didn’t have time to curse herself as she was thrown back into the melee, trying only to survive as metal and claw impounded upon one another. Like a dance, she felt herself reacting to the wolves' movements, trying desperately to score her own strikes while keeping them at bay – a task that she was beginning to wonder if it wasn’t beyond her own skillset yet. No time. Focus. Fight. It was darkened as one of the wolves latched its teeth upon her wrist, holding the sabre aside as it clawed across her chest and shoved her backwards. She managed to pull her hand and blade from its grip only by wrenching it forward with her, causing it to release her in an attempt to maintain its own footing – a fact that she was thankful for, knowing how dangerous it could be to lose an entire limb. This is going to be close. I need to end these two now. Her eyes darted between the wolves, knowing that she was pushing her luck as it was. They had managed to bring her health down further than Nymoria could have expected, and as she paced alongside their own predatory stance, she couldn’t help but wonder if she’d placed herself into an impossible situation. It had happened to many other players, including ones that she had considered better than herself. Hubris will be your downfall, as it always is. She bit her lip in order to avoid the thoughts, knowing that there was no time for it. The wolves moved forward at the same time as she did, as if mirroring her assault in some vain attempt to overwhelm her. Or perhaps it was simply luck that they had all reacted at the same moment, seeing an opening in the other’s defences that could be taken advantage of, used for their benefit. One more of the wolves was cut down, but as the fourth and final retreated out of her reach, she found herself locked into a game of chase that would quickly tire her out if she let it linger longer than required. Every step forward she took, the wolf ensured to take two backwards, knowing that it was barely within reach of escaping her grasp – not that Nymoria was ready to let that happen. Stop running away you coward, come back here and fight me! She wanted to scream at it, to force it to remain still – to do anything to end the fight before she became too tired. It was as if the wolf knew that, and was doing everything in its power to ensure she couldn’t finish it so easily. As she came to a stop, so did the wolf, its form hesitating and staring at her as it seemed to consider her next move. A sudden thought occurred to Nymoria, and she took a trial step backwards, watching as the wolf mimicked her retreat – keeping itself at just the right range to be out of reach, while ensuring it didn’t entirely lose her. Interesting… The thought confirmed, she raced backwards, attempting to put distance between herself and it, all while watching it following her. The tables had turned entirely, and as Nymoria attempted to place distance, the thing grew slightly closer to her – a natural consequence of its longer strides and greater speed; a fact that Nymoria was planning to take advantage of to give her the chance to stab the thing and end its misery of mimicry. Her health bar glowed above her, reminding her of just how close she had come to the end. But I survived, so there’s that… The thought was a mere bandage upon the concern that she had growing inside her during the fight. She’d survived this time, but she’d been reminded of just how quickly it could all be taken away. ’Are you okay? I was getting a bit worried about you, but look! You pulled through!’ Nemo’s grin hid the majority of the concern that would’ve shown on any normal person’s face, although Nymoria could swear she saw a small flash of it as he’d approached. Nodding in response, she leaned back into the grass, letting herself fall flat and placing her hands at the side of her head. I am okay. Tired. Need a few moments to rest before I consider doing another fight. She closed her eyes, letting her hands wander naturally as she tried to recover from the experience. Whether there was something she could have done better, or not, Nymoria didn’t know – and it really didn’t matter to her, in the moment. She was alive, and she’d overcome the danger. She should be proud of that fact. She knew that she should’ve been proud of everything she’d just accomplished, everything she’d accomplished so far, and yet she just felt empty in the moment. As if she’d done nothing more than woken up for the morning, and failed to rise out of her blankets. She could feel her face scrunching into a frown, and tried to force it away. Am I never going to escape this? Am I never going to be free of all this self loathing, self-doubt? Am I never going to be good enough? She knew the answer, even before the words came to mind. ’-such a lovely day, you’re right to rest and enjoy it. Besides, I’m really impressed with how you handled those wolves! For a moment I thought they might get the best of you, but then you swept around and overcame their assault, turning them into nothing more than…well, nothing!’ She wasn’t sure how long Nemo had been talking, but as she caught sight of his words, she found herself smiling slightly. It was her typical, other pleasing smile that she used for those who needed to see her happy – and she knew in this moment, Nemo needed to see her happy more than she needed to feel it. There was a small wrinkle of concern at the edges of his features, as if he’d been worried about her dying to the wolves. Not like a real person would. It’s just…imaginary. She considered the words, wondering if it were what she truly felt, or simply what she was trying to convince herself of in the moment. She’d seen, through her various experiences, the way in which some NPCs appeared almost more human, more real, than their more basic counterparts. Nemo was one of those, for certain. And even the most basic of NPCs have begun to adjust, to change, to become something…more…They’re not just absent beings that are prompted to answer…they’ve grown, changed…become something else… No answers would come to her in the moment, she knew that, but it didn’t change the fact that she felt oddly uneased by the way she’d been thinking. The way that she was arguing for their conformity, the normality that the NPCs could provide. The way that they seemed almost human to her, now. You’re worried that you’re becoming used to this world. That it’s becoming a reality for you, more than the one you left behind. You’re not as weak, as useless here, and so…you’re worried that you’ll adopt it, aren’t you? Nemo had been continuing to talk, but as Nymoria had failed to answer him, he seemed to understand that she wanted some time to herself. Her sign was sudden, and she could tell she caught Nemo off guard as she pushed herself into a seated position, before standing from the ground. She took a moment to stretch, a pointless activity in her opinion, but one that felt natural and required. She felt the sabre bounce slightly against her hip, and a frown crossed her face as she glanced down at it, her mind going back to the fight that had occurred between herself and the first pack. ’I do believe I saw some over to the south a bit! They looked a little more apprehensive than the first one you faced, but I think you’ll find them just as challenging.’ Nemo had stood as well, pointing in the direction he had indicated, bringing Nymoria’s attention to the wolf pack that wandered around freely. She could see the difference in their behaviour once Nemo had pointed it out, and nodded her head in agreement to his statement. Shaking off the last dredges of exhaustion and relaxation, she drew her sabre and tested it in her hand. Something about the weapon felt off now, although Nymoria couldn’t quite place it, and she found herself pausing – if only for a breath – before making her way across the field and towards her new targets. Nemo slowly followed behind, not willing to leave her alone as they spent the time together – although she wasn’t entirely sure what his point was in the action. Nymoria 0 Posted February 25 Author #13 Share Posted February 25 (edited) A side step and a shift allowed one of the wolves to sweep passed her entirely unhindered, neither Nymoria nor it landing a blow as they nearly collided. She could feel the ruffling of the fur as it passed her, and a momentary pause in time occurred before she was launched back into the chaos that was conflict. The rapier moved in her hand, flying outwards to stab towards a wolf, only to find herself pulling up short as the blade sunk into its shoulder. She grappled the hilt and wrenched it backwards, slicing upwards and outwards – managing to cut across two of the others before settling back into a more comfortable stance. They’re too close, I need to drive them back. She shifted her stance once more, bringing the rapier’s blade up and around in a hope of driving some space between herself and the wolves. In the background she could see Nemo, once more pacing the edge of the conflict, just out of reach of the wolves’ attention, and yet a look of concern upon his face. Does the fight look like its going that poorly? I haven’t even taken any damage yet? Shards exploded as first one wolf, then another and another finally exploded into nothingness, and Nymoria found herself standing before only one of the creatures that she had originally charged towards. Even this one had marks upon it now, where her wild assault had managed to scrape away a small portion of its health, leaving it breathing heavily as the two of them stared each other down. A quick flick of the rapier, and Nymoria found herself ready to go again, but something was still nagging at her. She cast a quick glance towards Nemo, confirming that he looked as off put as ever, and she found herself wondering what was wrong. Your stance. It’s not…it’s wrong. It doesn’t feel natural, and he can probably see it. What’s going on here? She didn’t look down, didn’t need to look to know that her entire form was off. She’d been cleaner before with it, but something had changed, and now she found herself frowning as she tried to figure out what. The sabre doesn’t feel right. It’s…heavy, and…it doesn’t feel right. It was the best explanation she could come up with. Something in the weapon had changed, and now Nymoria felt almost like she was wielding a club, rather than the refined blade that she had always held at arms length. She swung the sabre in her hand, feeling the weight of it imbalanced, and wondering if there was some imperfection with the weapon suddenly. Her eyes travelled the length of the blade, finding exactly what she was looking for after a few cursory glances, and a measure of distaste entering her throat. Look at how poorly I’ve treated you, an actual indentation in the blade…and here I thought the weapons only required minimal care in the game…teach me to be so inconsiderate of the tool given to me. She sighed as she stepped aside, moving towards Nemo as she sheathed the blade again. Her smile returned to her face; forced back into position as she tried to return to something that was a more pleasant demeanour to greet her host with. She was sure it didn’t fool him though, and her certainty was confirmed when he nodded towards the weapon at her hip. ’Is there something wrong? You seemed annoyed with the sabre a few moments ago?’ Nemo’s voice carried what would likely have been a hint of worry, or concern for the player, if Nymoria could have heard it. Instead, her mind was elsewhere, and she simply nodded, her hands moving in a quick response as she tried to figure out her next steps. It would appear that I have not been taking good care of the blade. At least, not as good of care as I should have been taking. It is nothing more than a mistake I have made, my own fault. Nymoria cursed herself as the blade felt off in her hands, the imperfection’s knowledge doing as much to put her strikes and movements off as the actual damage to the blade was limiting it in any way. As the first impact slammed into her, Nymoria felt herself pushed backwards, the second set of claws tearing into the front of her digital form as she strove to right herself. This is no good, focus on bringing them down. The issue with the blade won’t be an issue anymore if you’re dead. It wasn’t much of an inspirational thought, but it was enough to force Nymoria into motion, bringing the blade up and around in a wide arc that drove the wolves back, and left one bleeding from the gouge upon its side that her movement left. The blade wavered in her hand, a reverberation that hadn’t ever struck across it before leaving her hand feeling a minor numbness as she stared down at it quickly, before turning her attention back to the fight. The best she could hope for now, was that it managed to last long enough to get her to safety – anything beyond that, she’d need to figure out once she was long gone from the garden. Which is why I need to end this fight now, as soon as possible. So focus on that. Move, now. The remaining two leapt backwards, struck by the blow and barely making it back alive – for the moment. Nymoria gave them a chance to retrace their steps briefly, testing to see if they would retreat into the distance, or maintain the presence of attack that they had kept up until this moment. She wasn’t surprised when they began circling her, taking a moment to look for any openings upon her defences that would allow them to strike her more easily. This would be a lot easier if they would just run away…instead they need to stay here and be a pain. Ah well… She readied herself for the reengagement that she knew was coming. The sabre was holding up – for now – and she was happy that she hadn’t been forced to resort to fighting with her hands and feet just yet. Hopefully it lasts another engagement with the pair, and then… And then she was going to look to escape the garden, and return another day once she’d taken care of her equipment and weapon. She could feel her brow furrowing as she scowled herself for not having anything to assist her in the moment; not even a field sharpening stone. It was a behaviour that had screamed entitlement and disrespect to Nymoria, and one that she knew she needed to overcome and do better on in the future. The sabre hung by her side, a large crack upon its blade just shy of the hilt. Nymoria stared at the indentation with a mixture of disappointment, sadness, and frustration, knowing that the weapon would need significant repair and maintenance before it would be useful once more. She had no one but herself to blame for it, and that only made her more frustrated at the fact that it had happened to begin with at all. I should know better. I should take care of my things, and ensure that they’re in proper working order. This is what happens when you’re lax, lazy and inattentive. She could feel the anger at herself within her mind, and knowing that it could very easily turn for the worse, deciding that it was time to leave the topic alone – at least until she was in a mindset where she could deal with herself. ’It looks like that’s going to need some work, but you did well I think! That last pack almost had you, if you weren’t quick on your feet!’ Nemo grinned broadly as he provided what was likely supposed to be an encouraging comment, but instead only left Nymoria feeling a tinge of despair at the thought that her only saving grace had been a mere boost of speed and dexterity. ’There’s a few more groups of wolves out there, but from the looks of things… I don’t think you’re going to be up for facing them today, are you?’ There wasn’t a hint of sadness or disappointment in his tone, and Nymoria glanced only briefly towards the wolves in the distance. A part of her wanted nothing more than to rush out and face them, to prove that she was a capable fighter and more than she appeared to the eye of the dragon in man’s cloak. Logic won over emotion, however, and she turned away from the wolves with a soft sigh, shaking her head. Not today. I think I have pushed my luck as far as it can go. Nemo followed along beside her, watching as she swept through the higher grasses, letting her hands linger upon their tickling form as she smiled suddenly. ’It’s a relaxing place, all things considered, no?’ He seemed to guess what she was thinking, and Nymoria found herself nodding along to his words, her eyes focused on his face even as they seemed to gaze into the distance beyond. She let her mind wander slightly, wondering what this world would have been like if they hadn’t been trapped within it. She could almost imagine it being enjoyable, to some degree. A reality that won’t come to be, however. She shook away the stark reminder, not wanting to hear the depressing tone that it carried in the moment of peace she had found. Instead, she turned towards the distance, looking up towards the sky and letting her hands fall to her sides as she took a moment to simply soak in the sun. She closed her eyes, tuning out anything that Nemo may have been trying to say as she instead focused on finding some measure of peace in the middle of the field – a dangerous thing, considering it closed off any sign of attack coming towards her, but one that felt right in the moment. Sometimes we have to give up the safety, security, and awareness…in order to enjoy the moment. Life is short, and this game could make it even shorter…so I’ll enjoy every moment I can. Especially… She didn’t finish the thought, letting it instead fade into nothingness. She knew, in her heart, what she had wanted to say – at least, to say in her mind, and that was enough for her. I do hope that you’ll return again soon, it does get a bit…well, you know the whole bit.’ Nemo waved a hand, as if trying to wave away the loneliness that had been evident upon his face. Nymoria knew that it was as much his programming, his way of drawing an excuse for people to return time and again, and yet she found herself wondering if it wasn’t something more. Once again she’d seen a small flicker of something in Nemo during her adventure within the garden, and she couldn’t help wondering if there wasn’t something…less robotic, less code, about the man. ’I know you’re probably busy, and there’s things to do, but…if you’re ever free, and feel like dropping by, just know that my garden is always open and available to you! So long as we can find each other, that is.’ Nymoria gave a smile and a bow in response to his words, knowing how much the NPC meant them. Something about his words went far beyond the simple codified expression that he had been programmed to provide. At least, Nymoria felt that there was something more to it, now. It didn’t seem as repetitive, as inhumane as the ones provided earlier in the game – and to some extent by many NPCs she still encountered. Thank you, Nemo. I will return once I am able to do so. It is nice to spend a day here. To adventure with you. To see what collections you have that are new. They walked back to the entrance of the garden, pausing only long enough to provide final farewells before Nymoria stepped through and back onto the reality of Aincrad. Although the first floor wasn’t a major change from the garden, there seemed to be a bit less sparkle to it, as if something about Nemo’s garden shined just a little bit more than the normal world that was found within the floating castle. She gave a single glance back towards the garden, noticing that the entrance way had disappeared from sight. A single pause, and then Nymoria began making her way back towards the Town of Beginnings, and the home that awaited her on the higher floors.
