Nature's Treasure

She’d spent far too many days tracking down and finding Nemo. It was almost becoming an obsession, Nymoria felt. It was with that awareness that she’d stepped off the platform of the third floor’s teleporter pad, and walked down onto the main avenues of the settlement’s many streets. It was as busy as one could expect an early morning to be; various NPCs and players moving through small crowds towards their eventual destinations. Nothing out of the ordinary, and yet Nymoria felt as though she was somehow the central focus of all the eyes that turned towards her.

Shaking off the feeling, she moved down off the platform entirely, and through the small group that was awaiting their turn to use it. Most moved out of her way without a second look to spare, and she was reminded of how insignificant she was to them in that moment. None were individuals she’d ever met – or, at least, none that she recognised having met before. None moved to stop her, to talk to her, or to greet her in any way. In fact, the few she glanced at appeared almost zombie like in their motions; moving through a routine that kept them going, and nothing more.

Is this what our world is coming to? That’s…dreary. She tilted her head as she glanced around, looking for the form of Nemo that was expected to be here today. The world had become oddly dreary lately, repetitive in nature certainly…and yet Nymoria found herself feeling oddly better than she had in a long time. Don’t think or look too much into that. You’re not happy when others are miserable. That would be insane. It’s just coincidence. Things have been going well for you lately, and you have purpose again. That’s it. End thought.

She was disrupted as she spotted Nemo standing in the distance, leaning against a wall and waving as players walked passed him; either unfamiliar with the quest he offered, or in no need of his magical garden today. Either reasoning worked well for Nymoria, and she moved quickly through the growing crowd to reach the man.

’Ah, hello again! Attending the garden again today? It’s so nice to see you, and it looks like it’ll be a wonderful day to head there!’ His chipper voice sounded off as she confirmed the quest, before turning and leading her towards the exit of the settlement and the world beyond.

Nymoria followed along beside Nemo, enjoying the natural environment that they had been wandering through for the last few moments. The nearby trees seemed to give off an almost rich aroma, and Nymoria found herself thinking of a long forgotten drink that she had once had when travelling the country.

’It’s rather wonderful in its own way, isn’t it? The smell, I mean.’ Nemo had, apparently, learnt to wait to speak until Nymoria was facing him, where she would be able to see his mouth move and better register the words. She smiled as she glanced at him, before turning her attention back to the forest around them, her hands moving as she answered his question.

It is. The smell is similar to something I remember. From long ago. It is rather appealing, although I have long since forgotten what it was. She moved to place a hand on a nearby tree, as if planning to touch it before thinking better of it. Instead, she let her eyes linger over the form, before stepping back and moving away from the flora and deciding to carry onwards towards their destination. Nemo had waited patiently, until she was ready to move. Has there been any changes to the garden?

Nemo nodded, smiling to himself as the topic turned towards his one true love. Nymoria listened, somewhat, as he rattled on about the various changes in flora, fauna, and the general environment. Time passed them slowly as he spoke, his excitement only growing as he added more and more – apparently excited that she didn’t stop him mid sentence at any point in frustration, annoyance, or boredom. She found herself happy, or at least some form of content, at his happiness. She couldn’t help but wonder how many people actually spoke with the man, listened to what he had to say. Most probably ignore him, only listening to their bare minimum of what they need in order to complete the quest. And why wouldn’t they? It must get tiring listening to all the NPCs rattle on…but look how lively he is.

A quick glance around confirmed that they were in the depths of the woodlands now, the settlement entirely gone from sight. Nymoria knew that this sort of situation could be nerve wracking for some newer, still up and coming players – being trapped in the middle of nowhere with an unknown NPC, whom seemed determined to put them at ease. Anyone who knew anything about Cardinal would, obviously, be put in a manner of unease at the thought. Yet somehow she found herself unconcerned with the entire situation; a trust in Nemo having developed between them during her recent visits. It helps knowing I can probably take anything that he can throw at me, as well. Not all players can say that.

The path before them shifted, and Nemo led them off the regular beaten down walkway that spanned the forest and onto a small animal trail that led into the true depths of the woodlands. Nymoria pushed passed branches and bushes as she followed along behind Nemo, the scratching of the needles and wood along her digital form feeling almost realistic in the current setting.

’We should be almost there, I think!’ Nemo turned to talk to her, ensuring she could see his face when he spoke. Nymoria gave only a nod in return, content to follow along behind the NPC until they reached the entryway that would lead into the garden. She eyed the area around her, watching for any danger even though she knew they were unlikely to run into anything.

’It should be here somewhere…ah!’ Nemo had pawed through the brush looking for the entryway while Nymoria watched in with a grin on her face. Something about his frantic search was amusing to Nymoria, and as much as she wanted to point out the obvious to the NPC, she instead let him play through his piece and watched on until he’d found the gateway hidden behind the brush. ’Aha! Here it is! Come on in!'

The garden was the same as it always was, but as Nymoria glanced through the entryway and into the area beyond, she had an odd feeling that something within it was entirely different. Nothing major, she knew, but a small change that either Cardinal or Nemo had made, a change that would go unnoticed by most if they didn’t know to look for it. I wonder what it could be…should I ask Nemo? He’d probably be excited to explain it all to me, most likely. Maybe a bit later, though.

Any thought of bringing the topic up to Nemo disappeared as she glanced out over the fields and stopped what she’d come for; herds of very creatures roaming the plains in small packs, ready for her to rush into their midst. Turning to Nemo, she signed quickly. Any specific culling today?

’Hmmm….the Orchid Nymphs and the Knights of Gaia have both expanded their populations, and could use some…culling, as you said.’ Nemo spoke softly as he answered her question, his words coming as if from a great pain. It was enough for Nymoria, however, and she turned to glance over the field to see what would be closest to her. A small roaming pack of the Orchid Nymphs caught her eye, and Nymoria found herself moving across the field towards them before she realised she had made her choice.

Nymoria felt herself freeze in place as the toxins coursed through her; one of the Nymphs having managed to catch her off guard right after she’d torn through them all. The dagger in her hand had stopped halfway through the completion of its arc, and Nymoria could see as the group of Nymphs eyed her, knowing that she was helpless in the moment. She felt a single moment of fear course through her as she realised the sudden danger she was in, and the fact that she had done this to herself.

Maybe…maybe they’ll be too afraid to approach? Nymoria knew she was being overtly optimistic, but if she was just able to survive the next few seconds, to wait while the toxins coursed through her system and brought her paralysis to an end, she would be okay. She closed her eyes, not wanting to see what would happen next, trusting that she would either make it out – or she wouldn’t, and there was nothing else for her to do. She could feel the racing of her heart, the way in which her body reacted, and she realised that in this moment she would get an answer to a very, very old question.

She opened her eyes, noticing that almost immediately that she was alive – and that the Orchids had apparently chosen to remain distant from her form. A fact that Nymoria felt was a blessing, as much as a confusing moment. She felt her body release from the paralysis that had held it still for the few, long seconds. Shaking herself off, she repositioned herself slightly away from the Orchids, eyeing them as she recognised the danger that they presented. She’d over estimated her capabilities, which had almost gotten her killed – and she’d felt a small measure of fear towards that realisation.

Perhaps…I’m not as ready to end it… She pushed aside the thoughts, knowing she could deal with it all later. For the time being she needed to ensure her safety and continued survival. That meant focusing on bringing down the Orchids, and getting herself clear of any danger they presented.

Nymoria blinked. The Orchids had erupted into a shower of sparks and shards as they disappeared, leaving her standing alone in the field and wondering exactly how lucky she’d been in her moment of finality. She’d expected, in all reality, to have been taken down by the Orchid group as soon as she’d felt her body tense up and lock in place; yet she stood, knife in hand and staring at the empty field around her in a mixture of confusion and relief as she realised that she was not only still alive, but had defeated the group of Nymphs with another strong stroke.

’Wow, I was really worried there for a moment! It looked like they had you entirely at their whim, and that you’d be-‘ Nemo cut himself off, likely noticing the way in which his words were not going to be helpful towards her own mental health; or perhaps simply realising that there was no point in stating the obvious in the situation. Either way, she saw his face blush slightly as he turned a little bit sheepish at his realisation.

It is okay, Nemo. I know I was in danger. Perhaps I should focus on something easier…snapdragons? She signed towards him, a soft smile upon her face as she retrieved a collection of items from her bag. It had been a close call, for certain, and Nymoria wasn’t ready to take the risk of wondering around with her health as cut down as it was. She knew it was a bit of a waste, but she wanted to be healthy, not resource holding, in the moment.

The potions restored a fair amount of Nymoria’s health, and yet she still felt woozy on her feet. Post battle adrenaline depletion…I should take a moment to sit and recover. That was…an ordeal. She knew the voice in her head was right, and settled herself down onto the ground as she considered her next step. She knew it would be a few moments before she was ready to return to the field of battle – and she knew that she wasn’t going to try and engage the Nymphs again; their toxicity had proven deadly for her alone.

’Well, the snapdragons have been getting a bit populated…I guess they could use a bit of a culling.’ Nemo seemed to consider her question before his hesitant agreement. Nymoria gave him a quick sign of thanks, and suddenly his apprehensive behaviour had disappeared and his smile had returned. He shook his head, waving a hand even as he tried to make light of her thankfulness towards his agreement. ’As much as I may want to keep my garden in balance, I also don’t want it to…well, be too dangerous. And snapdragons repopulate quickly enough, so long as you don’t kill all of them, it should be absolutely fine.’

Nymoria grinned as she ran her hands through the grass, the natural foraging habits coming to her even as she considered her response to the man. Thank you, Nemo. You are a good person. I am happy to have you as a friend.

She’d rested enough, and with the consent of Nemo, Nymoria had decided that it was time to push her luck once more. Forcing herself to her feet, she drew the dagger from the sheath on her thigh, testing the blade’s weight once more. It’s a lot closer to the enemy than the sabre ever was…but it’s lighter and faster. That gives me an advantage… She knew it was a dangerous tactic – she would need to get inside the reach of the enemy, strike them, and then retreat all without getting struck in retaliation. It had been what she’d been doing with the sabre though, and although her first fight had been nearly dangerous, Nymoria had also seen an improvement upon her handling of the weapon compared to her last adventure in the garden.

Stop thinking, start moving. The words were enough to get her moving, and she quickly located the nearest group of snapdragons before making her way through the taller grasses towards them. Nemo followed along behind her, keeping his distance just shy of the range that would pull him into the fight as well – and yet close enough that he could rush in if required to assist her in any way. Though I doubt the system would let him even if he wanted to do that…

Footsteps carried her into their midst, her body ducking as one of the snapdragons reacted quickly to her presence and shifted to swarm her. She brought up her blade, deflecting the tiny claws before digging into its side and forcing it to retreat from her. A quick, controlled flurry of slashes caught the other three as they approached, leaving two bleeding from their sides and all four hovering around her in hesitation as they tried to find a way to close in on her.

Nymoria could see Nemo in the near distance, standing off to the side and watching with a small look of concern upon his face – a look of concern that Nymoria wasn’t entirely certain was an overreaction on his part. Her first strikes had gone well, and she’d managed to avoid any major retaliation, for the moment. Snapdragons are definitely a better prey to focus upon…though I still need to be careful. Let’s bring them down now.

Nymoria let out a breath as the final form of the snapdragon exploded in front of her, the knife’s blade still held upwards in the stabbing motion she’d taken to end the thing’s existence. She felt herself grin slightly, before turning to wave at Nemo. Her hands moved in a simplistic pattern as she signed towards him her own thoughts, happy to state them outwardly towards someone else. Knife works much better than sabre. Closer. Cleaner. Easier to hold.

Nemo seemed to beam in response, his excitement likely nothing more than a pre-determined response from Cardinal’s coding within his mind, and yet Nymoria found herself uncaring. His simple happiness at her own happiness was enough, for the moment, regardless of the reality of its origins.

Turning away from the NPC, she instead eyed another nearby group of snapdragons, deciding that she wasn’t quite done her work – yet. Another group, then. Good practice with the new weapon…although if today goes well, I won’t be holding this one for very long. She rushed forward, brandishing the dagger in a backhanded form as she closed on the small drakes with a determined, agile gait.

The snapdragons had noticed her approach, and as much as Nymoria attempted to duck underneath their coming assault, she felt as claws and teeth dug into her digital form. Tearing apart her essence, they ripped her digital flesh as they tried to reduce her health to nothing – a fact that she wasn’t ready to allow to happen. Lashing out with her blade, she forced them back, cutting deeply into one’s wing as it limped backwards and out of her reach, as much as it could.

She could feel herself swaying from the moment of conflict, and naturally took a step away from the creatures in order to place some distance between herself and them. Taking stock of her situation, Nymoria knew that it would be in her best interest to rush forward and cut the remainder down, before they could fully regroup from the brutality of their first clash. Just get in there, and don’t give any hesitation. Concentrate on it, bring them down. You’ve got this.

The final snapdragon disappeared as Nymoria’s knife pierced the front of it, leaving the shards to shimmer down to the ground in an almost dramatic effect that was lost to her. She felt herself smiling at her success, and yet somehow felt like she’d pushed a border line that she hadn’t meant to come so close to after the paralysis. You’re becoming careless with your success. Reign it in, focus on being more careful. You don’t want to accidentally walk into something you can’t handle.

Chastised appropriately, she let herself revel slightly in the victory as she sheathed the knife and turned towards Nemo, her face still beaming from the exertion of the conflict. Thank you, Nemo. These snapdragons are very good practice. The knew knife works very well, do you not think so as well?

Nemo seemed taken aback by her sudden talkativeness, and it took him a few seconds to reply to her question, his face openly surprised at the question. ’Oh, oh uhm! Yes, yes it appears to be working well! Why did you change to the knife? I noticed that you were not wearing your regular weapon, and had assumed that you simply had it hidden away somewhere, or perhaps had forgotten it. Are you using only the knife now?’

The sabre was not feeling right in my hands last time. I felt that there was…a change in how I fought. The dagger seems more beneficial for how close, and agile I tend to fight. It seemed like a good idea to change. Her hands flowed through the signs as she excitedly explained her thinking to the NPC, who watched and listened with rapt attention. She wasn’t entirely sure whether Nemo actually cared; whether he could care at all or not. She was, however, not paying attention to his reaction that much if she were to be entirely candid. The knife feels lighter, faster, more me. It allows me to move quickly. I do need to get used to the difference. This is why things did not go so well so far. Practice is all I need.

Nemo seemed to listen quietly, nodding along when it seemed appropriate. Nymoria found herself flushing slightly as she stopped signing, realising how self-focused she had been in the moment, and how easily the words had flowed from her. So desperate for contact that I’m unloading to an NPC?

She shook her head slightly to clear it, allowing her hands to continue rummaging through the ground’s dirt and grasses as she thought to her self. Nemo had fallen silent, staring off into the distance with a content expression upon his face; one which Nymoria knew was a sign that he was taking comfort and contentment in the garden that he had worked so hard to create.

Maybe it’s not so bad to unload on an NPC. At least they can’t judge me, or ignore me…although that’s a bit selfish, isn’t it? And they’ll only say what Cardinal thinks I want them to say…still, it’s...good practice? The argument was enough for Nymoria, and she chose to accept it as it was. Putting aside that fact, she instead focused on relaxing a bit, enjoying the sunlight and the soft breeze that roamed over the fields even as she continued her casual search for anything of use. Her day in the garden had been beneficial thus far, and she wasn’t quite ready to move on from it.

’It’s lovely today, isn’t it?’ Nemo’s voice was soft, as if he was lost in thought as he spoke. Nymoria paused only long enough in her searching to confirm that the conversation was going to remain causal, before allowing her hands to continue their movement. His gaze held the horizon, and although he didn’t appear anything but content with what he saw, Nymoria couldn’t help but wonder if he was already planning something new. ’It’s nice to see people enjoying the garden so much. It brings…a small measure of joy, seeing it all. It’s like…people come here, and they can find a bit of peace. Away from the chaos and sadness that is the world beyond the garden. That’s a silly thought, isn’t it?’

Nemo glanced towards Nymoria as he finished speaking, a sheepish look that could’ve been embarrassment flashing across his features. Nymoria shook her head, raising her hands and signing quickly in response to his finality. I do not think it is silly. I think many people do come here in order to find the necessary things that we need. But I think many also come here to relax. It is a very calming garden. It is not the chaos and sadness as you said. It is…a break from everything else.

Nemo seemed to consider her words for a few moments, as if trying to figure out if she were being sincere or not in her commentary. Nymoria allowed herself to focus on searching for materials, her hands flowing around her as she touched, dug and loosened various things from the areas around her. When Nemo spoke again, she found herself putting away yet another collection of items she’d found, and a grandeur success coming from her efforts.

’That is…good to hear. It’s what I wanted, from this place. Somewhere that people could come to relax, to get away from the world…and to spend some time with me, too.’ He gave a sly smile towards the end of his sentence. It made Nymoria aware that he wasn’t entirely oblivious to the behaviours that he always displayed towards those who attended the garden for the first time, and it made her wonder once more just how self-reliant and self aware Nemo was. She knew, though, that it was a mystery that may never get solved – at least, not by her.

The two of them remained silent for a while longer, Nemo apparently content with the observation that had been made, and nothing else coming to mind to say aloud. Nymoria found herself gazing out into the distance, her body acting naturally as she thought about everything she’d experienced. There’s no doubt about it. Some of the NPCs are more…lively than others. Almost as though they are developing into something that could be considered conscious. Is this the side effects of a continually learning artificial intelligence? Just how much can Cardinal learn? How much can it adapt, and…what else can it become?

She wasn’t sure if that line of thought could end well, and seeing as she didn’t have anything close to what could be considered an answer, she left it to hover at the edges of her mind untouched and unfulfilled. Instead, she thought about something else that had been on her mind. What am I going to do with my own build? I know I want to find some absolute accuracy, if only to bolster my capabilities…but what beyond that? It would be nice to…well, it would be nice to see what’s available. I haven’t even really taken a look at options, have I?

She’d spent enough time seated. Nymoria could feel the itch building within herself, the desire to go test herself in combat once more. Pushing off the ground, she stretched in order to loosen the muscles that had begun to relax in the dirt, before turning towards Nemo with a smile on her face that was filled with excitement at the coming conflict. I am going to go find some more snapdragons. Would you like to come with me?

Nemo gave a nod, before pushing himself from the ground and dusting off the small amounts of dirt that had clung to him. Nymoria waited, patiently, as the man rose and prepared himself. Once he was ready, they headed off in the direction of the nearest pond – Nemo having stated that the snapdragons tended to like collecting near the water. ’At least, I’ve observed them usually around water. I’m not entirely sure what their fascination with the bodies of water are, but they seem to always linger close…as if it’s a natural instinct, rather than a conscious one. Perhaps it has to do with a requirement for liquids…?’
