[F-11] Earning a Living - Bushido Fishing

Recommended Posts

The first floor was a nice change of pace in comparison. He had spent far too much time on the fifth floor, and was getting tired of being assaulted by sand and harsh winds. He had heard about something called sub-professions, or something similar that would allow him to get extra stuff. As a kid, he was never one for gardening, and he never got the chance to fish properly. May as well give that a shot and see if it was his kind of thing. He was always interested in it, it seemed like it could be relaxing. Or incredibly boring. Regardless, it seemed like a good way to make some spare Col on the side. And it was going to be a good way to get fresh ingredients. With that in mind, he steeled himself for whatever the game thought ‘Earning a Living:Fishing Edition’ would give him.

Following directions this time, the first time he’d ever actually looked at them, so he wouldn’t get lost, Ryo found himself on the well made dock. Alongside the dock were several benches angled out to the large lake, and a humble fishing shack. It most likely sold beginning rods and bait he pondered. As Ryo approached the shack, assuming the find the NPC inside, he was surprised by a voice by the lakes edge. “Ahoy! Looking to pick up Fishing friend?” The voice asked. Ryo nodded his head. “Yes sir I am.” Ryo said, stepping down from the dock to meet the man. The man towered over Ryo, his boots wet and crusted with sand. The NPC held out a giant hand, encompassing all of his own in one giant grip. “Pleasure to meet you! I’m Anthony Gill!” He said, excitedly. “I bet you were looking for someone old, long beard, and a pipe.” He jested, laughing.

Ryo laughed along with him, meeting the grip as best he could. Ryo matched the smile as his hand was released. “I’m honored that you would come to me for help. Since we’re now friends, I’ll let you in a little secret.” Ryo watched as the NPC reached into his pocket and produced a small tin, and then held it out to him. Bewildered as to what might be in the tin itself Ryo’s mind wandered. Could it be some sort of special bait, a golden coin for getting the biggest fish, or perhaps it was a hook fashioned from a rare metal. Ryo took the case from the NPC, and opened it only to be met with a tiny worm in a pad of loose dirt. Looking disappointed Gil spoke. “It’s special because the local priest prays over it in a top-secret ceremony. I'm the only one in the world who has it, so don't bother looking for it anywhere else. If you use it, you'll catch the rare any mysterious Rainbow Fish, which you can harvest for Gleaming Scales. Catch the fish, bring me a scale, and you'll know all there is to know about fishing."

Moving to the edge of the lake, Ryo checked his inventory and saw that a Beginner Rod had been added. Equipping it showed that it was, incredibly basic. A lightweight rod with barely any discernable features. Three rings to help guide the, string, what was it even called. And a spool with a handle, he thought this was called the reel. It was more plastic than metal and didn't seem very strong or durable. Ryo mimiced the action that Gill had done and found that the game had taken control of his body similar to using a sword art and allowed him to cast. A small 'plop' noise from his bobber hitting the water, disturbing the surface as it bobbed up and down.

Ryo stood for several minutes, waiting for something anything to happen. Having the tall and stoic man of Gill standing beside him was a bit off putting so Ryo reeled in his bobber and opted to change spots. Besides, maybe it would be better if he was on the dock.

Ryo took his rod and found an empty spot on the pier, and took a seat on one of the benches. Casting back into the water Ryo could already feel a difference. The bobber floated and he could see small shapes moving under the surface. He sat quietly, not wanting to disturb the fish anymore than he already had. Ryo took in a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. This was, relaxing? He didn't know how to put it into proper words, or properly explain it. But sitting here, alone was nice. No loud mobs attacking him, no NPCs shoving themselves into his face. There was no Butler to playfully chide him, no Teion to dote over. He could just sit here and, relax.

Until, his bobber danced. Ryo shot to attention as his bobber dipped below the surface. Ryo leaned forward and began to reel in. Was this the Rainbow fish? Whatever it was it was giving a good fight. Ryo pulled on the rod, yanking the fish into the air and it just clicked for him. It was the fish he was looking for, but that feeling he just had was worth it. A small fish was at the end of his line. Defintely not the Rainbow fish. He kept the small fish, adding 1 material to his inventory.

Ryo recast his rod, hoping for another bite. That surge of adrenaline, that need for the rod to vibrate in his hands. To feel something struggle like it did, and have that test of strength against it. More minutes went by, and soon that feeling of needing the next chase were subsided by his own thoughts again. The peace came, and his thoughts leveled out. Was this, what fishing was about? The sudden high of getting a catch followed by your mind clearing and settling. Just like the surface of the water. More minutes went by before the bobber began to jiggle again. Ryo gripped his rod, ready for the bobber to sink completely. As the bobber did, he yanked the rob up catching the fish. Not the Rainbow, but still useful. If the bait was to believed, that rainbow fish would be his soon enough. But for now, another cast...

Ryo cast his bobber out, eager for yet another bite. He was on a roll after all. Soon he'd be able to use as much fish as he'd want to start supplying his restaurant. Even though he was catching fish, they kept turning into general materials, which meant he could use them for anything really. A smile crept along his face, the idea of turning a fish into a suit of armor, or a weapon. Then he wondered, would he be able to find anything else by fishing? He remembered old cartoons often times rewarding those with boots, or old CD's. A fun novelty to think of to be sure, but a serious notion? He figured nothing would be the better option. And judging from the slack in his line, that was to be the case. Perhaps he may find a treasure chest or two should he be fortunate enough to dredge the bottom of a treasure filled lake.

Reeling in his previous availed naught but water and whatever algae existed underneath the water. A few moments were spent cleaning the hook and line, making sure that it was properly maintained and cleaned before casting again. The algae was somehow sticky, and smelled strange but didn't bother Ryo too much as he tossed it back into the lake. Tossing the bobber back out into the lake, he watched as the bobber hit the surface and began to, bob. Minutes passed as nothing too serious seemed to happen. A nibble here and there, but nothing of note. Despite nothing happening, it wasn't growing boring. As time passed, the bobber dipped and Ryo pulled on the rod catching yet another fish. He added the spare materials to his ever-growing stash, feeling a small sense of satisfaction. Still no rainbow, but he was determined. The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden hues over the water, and Ryo remained hopeful.

The growing inventory of materials filled him with joy. It wasn't a lot, but at least it was something. The fish were biting it seemed. And he could feel something good about to happen, he usually had a knock for that. Clearing the rod and making sure it was still good he cast. Almost instantly there was a snag on the rod. Ryo gripped his rod and tugged it like he would any other fish he had been catching. However it surprised him when it actually began to fight against him. "Oh-ho shit?" He exclaimed to himself as he fought against the fish. The fish would try to swim in one direction and Ryo would lock the string and pull the other way. When the fish would relent some he would pull high on the rod pulling the fish closer to him as he reeled in. Inch by inch he cut down on the distance and soon enough, Ryo won the contest of stamina and a fish was his prize. Reaching down and pulling the line up, Ryo gazed upon it's scaled majesty. "Holy shit, it's real." He said to himself as he stared at the sizable fish, its scales catching the light and reflecting a cascade of every color under the rainbow. His quest updated as complete, but why didn't he feel so? He didn't have to turn in the quest just yet right? He could fish a bit longer.

His hands still shaking from the previous catch, Ryo tossed out the bobber once again. The thrill of the earlier catch hadn't quite worn off, and a quiet excitement lingered as he watched the bobber settle on the water's surface. He couldn’t help but wonder if he could catch multiple Rainbow fish. Probably not, given what the quest had stated, but it was nice to dream. Dreams had always been something he held onto tightly, and even now, amidst the quiet ripples of the lake, he let himself indulge in that fantasy. With a soft sigh, he cast out the line again, watching the bobber land with a gentle plop. The minutes passed slowly, the stillness broken only by the occasional ripple of water. He let the time slip by, focusing on the calm. After all, the previous catch had been such an unexpected stroke of luck. Perhaps he had used all of it, catching the elusive rainbow fish.

Reeling the empty bobber in, Ryo let out a disappointed sigh, his frustration evident as he stared at the still, undisturbed water. He had hoped for something, anything, but the lake remained silent. Maybe he had been too optimistic, or maybe the fish just weren’t biting today. He glanced around, considering his options, and thought perhaps changing spots would prove beneficial. Maybe the fish were more active elsewhere. Shrugging, he decided it was worth a try. With a quiet determination, he tossed the bobber back into the water, watching it sink and settle on the surface. He would wait and see if this new cast would bring any luck. The minutes ticked by slowly, the peaceful surroundings almost mocking his impatience. Despite his efforts, nothing happened. Not even a nibble. Defeated, Ryo sighed once more and reeled his bait back in, deciding that a change of scenery was in order. He moved to a new spot on the dock, hoping for better luck.

Changing spots seemed to have worked. It didn’t take long for another fish to bite. Ryo’s fingers tightened around the rod as he felt the familiar tug, his heart rate quickening in anticipation. He tugged and pulled with careful precision, guiding the fish closer to the surface. The line snapped taut, and with one final, practiced yank, he reeled the fish in. Another catch added to his growing collection. He couldn’t help but smile at his success, feeling a small surge of satisfaction. The new spot on the dock seemed to be promising after all. Ryo quickly added the fish to his inventory, his movements swift and practiced. He paused for a brief moment to appreciate the quiet success before preparing for the next cast. The rhythm of fishing was calming, and despite the earlier frustrations, he felt more at ease now. With a renewed sense of determination, he cast his line out again, ready for whatever might come next.

Changing spots seemed to work as it didn’t take long for another fish to bite. Ryo felt the subtle tug on the line and his heart skipped a beat. With a sharp motion, he yanked the rod back, feeling the resistance on the other end. The fish fought against the pull, but Ryo was determined. He tugged and pulled, carefully reeling the line in, maintaining just the right amount of pressure. His arms felt the strain, but he kept a steady pace, guiding the fish closer. Finally, with one last firm pull, he managed to reel it in, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. Another fish added to his inventory. He quickly stored it away, feeling a small rush of satisfaction. The new spot seemed promising, far more productive than the previous one. With a quick glance at the calm water, he cast his line again, eager to see if his luck would hold.

But all too soon, it seemed that his luck had run out. After two successful catches, the water grew still again, and no fish appeared to be interested in his bait. He watched the bobber float quietly on the surface, his anticipation slowly fading. Perhaps this was simply what fishing was—moments of excitement followed by long stretches of nothing. A few hot streaks of success, followed by bursts of stillness and silence. Ryo leaned back, letting out a small sigh as he watched the ripples spread across the water. It was a decent enough trade-off, he supposed. The thrill of the catch was all the more rewarding when it was unpredictable, when it came after a stretch of waiting. If every time he cast the line something was caught, it wouldn’t feel nearly as satisfying. Fishing, in its own way, was about patience and the occasional rush of triumph that came with the right moment.

Another cast, another failure. The bobber sat motionless on the water’s surface, waiting for something to take the bait. Ryo let out a soft sigh but didn’t let the disappointment linger for long. It didn’t matter too much. The quiet of the lake, the gentle breeze, and the solitude had their own calming effect. For now, he was alone, and that was exactly what he needed. Time to just be with his thoughts, uninterrupted. It helped settle his mind, which had been racing with all the things happening lately. He had a day planned with Teion, someone he could always count on for a good time, but there was also the excitement of reconnecting with his cousin after such a long time apart. That reunion had stirred up a lot of memories, both good and bad. But for now, the peace of the lake was exactly the escape he needed before diving back into everything.

The sun was starting to set low, casting a golden hue over the water. Had he really been here all day? No, that couldn't be right. He glanced at the sky again, trying to make sense of the passing time. This was meant to take just an hour or so, nothing more. But as the shadows grew longer, he realized how much time had slipped away unnoticed. He should probably get going soon, especially with the evening creeping in. The thought of packing up and turning in the quest lingered in his mind, but for some reason, he hesitated. What could one more cast hurt? After all, he’d been so close to a breakthrough, and a small part of him wondered if he might just get lucky again. With a quiet sigh, he tossed his line out into the water, and to his pleasant surprise, it didn’t take long for something to bite. A smile crept onto his face as he began to reel it in.

One last cast, and he'd be done for the day. After all, he’d just caught something, and it would be a shame to leave now, especially when the water felt so peaceful. He thought just a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt. With a soft sigh, Ryo cast his line again, watching the bobber settle on the water. He leaned back and let the rhythm of the wait wash over him, the calmness almost soothing. Minutes turned into an hour, though, and still, nothing. The fading light from the setting sun gradually slipped away, leaving him with just the faint glow of twilight. The sky turned from gold to deep purple, and the chill of evening began to settle in. Not really wanting to, but knowing it was time, Ryo reluctantly reeled the rod back in. Despite the quiet end to his fishing session, he felt satisfied overall. It had been a day well spent, and sometimes, that was all that mattered.

The sun had set, and he had cast his last cast. A solid amount of materials were collected AND the rainbow fish was caught as well. He put his rod away, and stood from his spot. A decent enough of a day had been had. Plenty of time to think to himself about the world, and it was nice to just be alone for it. He walked back to the Fishing NPC. "There ya are! Have any luck?" He asked, a menu popping up asking for the quest item. Ryo nodded his head, and turned in the fish and the lure he borrowed. "Yep. Thanks for letting me borrow that." The NPC laughed as he held up the still rainbow fish. "Well how about that! Can't believe these beauties are practically anywhere in Aincrad. At least, that's how the rumor is." He said, taking out a filet knife and chipping a scale off. The new material appeared in Ryo's inventory. "A gleaming scale?" He asked, looking at the item. He had only heard musings about needing these before, but he never had seen one before. Made sense at least that they'd be tied to fishing being called scales and all.
