The foreman had described the events plaguing the mines of Tomoika, but somehow she hadn’t expected it to be actual dragons. Well, there are dragons in this world, but still…drakelings? In an underground cave? I guess it’s not entirely impossible… ’It’s not going to be a problem, is it?’ The foreman stared at her skeptically as she lost herself in her thoughts. His words pulled her out of the dull confusion that was growing within her mind, and Nymoria gave a sheepish shake of her head, embarrassed that she had lost track of her current situation in response to the surprise. She didn’t doubt that the quest details had explained it all thoroughly, but she’d come across the quest giver entirely by accident. Her recent spout of shopping had brought her to the floor in search of anything useful, and the foreman had ambushed her with his request. It should be fine. Where do I find these drakelings? Nymoria signed as she realised the NPC was still waiting for some sort of answer. She half-listened as he explained the various tunnels and depths that led into the mines that the town used, and how many of them had become plagued by the various drakelings and their infernal matriarchs. ’The easiest start to the entrance is on the west end, over that way.’ The foreman pointed to what appeared to be a wall in the distance, and Nymoria gave a nod of her head. Thanking him, she stepped away and towards the indicated direction. She still wasn’t sure why she’d accepted the quest, but now that she was here she figured she might as well get it done with. Besides, I might be able to find something useful out there. The foreman also stated there would be some decent rewards for bringing back excessive quantities of the hides. So at least it won’t be an entire waste of a trip… Her hand lowered to the knife sheathed to her leg, a part of her wondering if it would be able to even pierce the hide of a drakeling. It’s not like they’re invulnerable. And besides, one weapon is just like any other weapon here. She’d barely left the town ten minutes ago, and already Nymoria had seen signs of the drakelings within the depths of the mines. Or rather, the fore fringes of the mines. If they’ve already made it all the way up here… She shrugged off the thought, knowing that it would at least mean that she would have an easy time hunting them down. At least Shogan seems content with the explorative side of the day. The shadowy fox lopped along at her side, tails wagging in content as they moved through the depths of semi-dark mines. She doubted that Shogan had any fear of the drakelings, much less the dark, that they could encounter. The fox had shown great bravery during other outings, not once showing any desire to run from anything they’d encountered – at least, not yet. Aha, there’s the first. Nymoria spotted the form of something hovering in the distance, its wings allowing it to move slowly through the underground tunnels. Not overly large, she put it barely bigger than Shogan, although it was covered with gleaming red and black scales that seemed to reflect what little light touched it. She could already see the red and greenish coloured blood seeping, the toxic effect blending in with the bleeding that she had caused and wearing away at the poor creature’s health before it even had a chance to fully register her presence. Not that it made a difference, with the thing being stunned in place, it would disappear into a shattering of shards before it could do anything towards Nymoria. A lucky start. I won’t always be so lucky…so be careful. The chastising in her head wasn’t entirely necessary, and yet Nymoria knew that it was right in its message. Holding the knife in a careful grip, she waited only long enough for the creature to erupt into nothingness before collecting the hide, and preparing to move on. I wonder how long until everyone starts looking for the next labyrinth. She cocked her head at the thought, interest and excitement, as well as a small measure of confusion, catching her mid-step. She knew she was interested, herself, in being involved in a labyrinth search, but she was also aware that those were generally kept for more experienced players. Should we join a labyrinth hunt, Shogan? She signed towards the fox, watching as it waved a pair of tails in response; as close to an agreement as she was going to receive from her companion. Nymoria nodded, considering the possibility. She would need to find someone else who was interested, or rather a group of others. These are always done in groups…except maybe by a couple of people. But usually they’re done in groups. Maybe I can put up a notice? Her thoughts were interrupted as another of the drakelings came into view. Nymoria quickly drew her knife, before rushing outwards to greet the thing. Her blade hadn’t been as lucky this time, repelled by the shimmering scales that protected the thing. Still, she’d scored enough of a hit to cause a significant drop in its health, as well as to leave her without having to worry about any retaliatory strikes. At least so long as I can bring it down before it has a chance. Reprimanded from her overtly confident behaviour, Nymoria spun around and refaced the drakeling. The thing had begun to shake off the stunned effect by the time she was focused on it, and she found herself dropping naturally into her newly practiced guard. The blade held backhanded and upwards in a ready position, she waited for the thing to close the distance between itself and her, knowing it would be unable to hesitate from attempting to attack her. Nymoria had felt a single moment of pity for the creature, driven forward by the singular purpose it existed for, before she’d plunged the knife through it and broken its existence entirely. Sometimes Cardinal really is brutal…but is it making us as brutal? Nymoria shook her head, unwilling or incapable of admitting to the fact that Cardinal could be corrupting them. She knew that many players had done things they wouldn’t be proud of; things that they needed to do in order to survive. None, however, would ever admit that they had become something as bad as the system that held them trapped. Pushing herself onwards, Nymoria thought about the oddity of the entire situation. They’d become trapped in a world that would make them fight to survive. To kill, in order to escape. Only a flash of motion out of the corner of her eye had saved her, the knife in her hand raising and stabbing towards it in a naturally reactive manner. Freezing in place, the blade stuck deep within its chest, the drakeling had stared at Nymoria with an expression that she felt was somehow a mixture of shock and anger. Nymoria quickly twisted the knife, before pulling it out and stepping back away from the thing. She could already see the combination of blood and poison leaking from the wound, a sign that she had struck something overly vital – and a sign that it wouldn’t last more than a few seconds as the health was sapped from it. Lucky. But this is going a lot better than I could have expected… Sighing softly, she relaxed only a little bit as she forced the knots that had just developed from her muscles. She’d barely moved into the depths of the mines – in fact, she figured if the tunnels hadn’t turned, she would likely still see the town she had left behind – and yet she’d already encountered a number of the drakelings.
