[Clash Of Blades Season 1] Week 4: Hirru vs Acanthus

The stillness, the silence. You'd think one could hear the horrified screams of damned souls, or echoed screeches of banshees mimicking human terror and pain. That, or at least the footsteps of the large beings beyond their comprehension. No, instead there was just the complete and utter lack of any activity. Even the air remained unmoving, stale. Shifting only with the pink, slimey tendrils that slithered around buildings and into the broken alleyways of this forsaken city. Kindling fought the overwhelming urge that nagged at his brain, to look up. The being there was tugging at his mind, unspoken will for him to gaze up and at the dark god above him. He kept his eyes down, his lips pulled tight. Maybe this wasn't a good idea.

Too late. "Combatants!" He tried to add some cheer to the word, without allowing it to echo off the far away walls of destroyed bricks and collapsed ruins of this place. A worry that was in complete vain; for all sound was dampened, as though trapped in a small room covered in insulation. Nothing carried. Nothing could escape. "Today, you may notice the complete lack of an audience. Fear not; we don't need a lot of audience members, we have one very big one!" He lifted his hand up, but stopped it midway through, completely unsure if he should even been acknowledging the lord above. Too late now. "Minako and I have the intense ecstasy of being hosted and granted refuse by Emrakul!" Finally able to indicate the mass of tentacles that dwarfed the entire building floating above. All coalescing into a calcic shell the size of a small island. It's one, translucent pink eye moving unpredictably over the entire landscape. Ultimately settling on the round opening of an ex-plaza area. This district was likely a town center of sorts, the ruins of a fountain in the middle being little more than a pile of rubble now. Making this an almost perfectly circular arena their perfect combat place.

"P̴̗̾á̵̱r̴͉̄t̶͍͂í̷̹c̵̤̈́i̷͍̚p̶͖̒a̸̮̓n̷͎̒t̸͖͑s̶̝̔ ̴̺͝o̸̡̅f̵̲̂ ̷͉͒t̵̼́h̶̢͠ĩ̴̧s̷̞̋ ̸̻͐f̵̩̂o̶͜͠ŕ̵͙s̴̯͑ả̶͎k̶̺̓e̷͙͒ń̵̼ ̶̪͠c̵̼͝o̴̩͊n̵̼̋t̵̫͝ḛ̶́s̴͎̎t̶̞͌,̴͚͠ ̵̥̀h̸͍͘e̸͓͘e̶̤͠d̵̦̾ ̶̞̀t̴͖̓h̴̥̍ẹ̶͑ ̸̦́c̶͚͑ạ̶̈́l̵̿ͅl̴̛̜ ̷̨̀o̴̪̐f̴͖͠ ̶̝͝t̵̪̾h̸͇͊ẹ̸́ ̷̝̎a̷͔͌b̷̝̀y̸͖͝s̸̖̆s̴̭̉.̵̰̔ ̷͉̓T̷̳́ḧ̵͇́e̶̖̋ ̷̪̋t̵̕ͅĩ̷͖m̵̪̒e̶̳̕ ̶͇͒f̸̠́o̸̪̚r̸̞̽ ̴̞͂y̵̡͑ő̴̲u̶̹͂r̶͊͜ ̶̣̈́r̶͙̋e̸͔͒c̵̾ͅk̴̺̃ö̶̳́n̷̰̅ị̴̒n̷̼̋g̴͍͊ ̷̦͒h̵͇̿a̶̟͂ș̵̀ ̵̣͘c̴̗̎ȍ̷͜ṁ̵̨e̴̾ͅ.̵̭̀ ̶͎̆K̵͍͐n̸͉̾ǫ̶̈́w̵̹͊ ̸̪̍t̴̮͝h̵͍͝a̶̝̅t̵͈̆ ̵̮̽t̷̬͒h̵̦̅i̵̳͋s̴̝̐ ̶̫̾r̶̖̈́o̶͔̎u̶̫̅n̷̦̍d̸͚̉ ̸̹͋ḭ̶́s̵͝ͅ ̵̨̆b̷̳̂u̴̻͝t̶̮͆ ̷̣͂a̵̪̒ ̴̢͘f̸̯͆l̷͎̇e̷͔͐e̴̗̿t̵̩͂i̵̝̇ṋ̸͛g̴̱̀ ̴͓̑m̴̝̓ö̵̩́m̵͖̐e̸̟͌n̶̼̓t̷͚̅ ̵͕̊ì̶͖n̵̩͒ ̴̪̽ṫ̶͍ȟ̸̥ę̵̚ ̴̳̓ȋ̸͍n̷̨̅f̸̦͌i̷̩͘n̶̗̊i̵͖͒t̵̺͠e̸̪̕ ̵͎͊e̴̥̐x̷͖̏p̶͇̋a̶̞͊n̵͕͛s̵̟̅e̴̯̒,̴͉̓ ̴̮̆y̵̼̏ë̸̘́t̵͓͐ ̶͕͆ǐ̵̡t̵̻̃ ̶̢̐w̶̢̽i̶̱̔ḷ̴͘l̸̪͊ ̷̬͊c̷̖̓a̸̬͠ř̴͉v̵͎͠ě̵̠ ̵͜͝ỹ̴̰o̵̭̊ů̶͚ŗ̶́ ̵̭̍f̷̦̀a̵͖̚ţ̷̂e̷̲̚ṣ̸͊ ̴̠̿i̵͈̋n̴͙̄ṭ̸͆o̷̞̒ ̵͔̈́t̷̹͝ȟ̸͈e̷̼͌ ̵̯̋f̸̯̎à̸̖b̵̤͝r̶̖̒í̸̟c̶͍̓ ̴̻̉o̴͎͋ḟ̵͔ ̶̢̏o̶̦̾b̵̻̐ḽ̸̈i̴͓͂v̶̲̎i̵̯̍ȍ̶̲n̴͕͑.̴̫́"

Kindling froze in place, feeling the aching, throbbing pain of that being's voice inject itself into his conscious. Not a word actually spoken, or boomed from the sky. It subsided with time. It seemed this being understood ther mission, and that would be cutting the introductions short. They needed to get out of here as soon as possible. "Combatants, take your stance. Hirru and Acanthus, say your piece. And try not to look that Lord in the eye for too long. Lest you step on his... appendages." Giving them now the ever so brief moment to exchange words, and mentally prepare themselves for the visages and unknown terrors that were sure to assault each.

Then he raised his hand. "On my mark, Get ready, get set..."

God, he hoped no one died here.

Welcome to the Fourth week of Clash of Blades - March Madness begins! This month will include a host of whacky, and absurd thematic, this week's honing in on MADNESS. There has been several changes from last week, so please be sure to have the Informational at the ready!
Another soft reminder to NOT use outside items. Please use only the items purchased in the Event Shop.

  Hide contents
  • Please remember to LINK your Spreadsheet, and triple check that all your stats are correct. Failure to do so before the actual combat begins will result in a loss by default. Going forward, we will be taking a much more hardline stance on this rule. The reason for that is out of respect for the time and energy of the hosts, and your fellow participants.
  • Remember that initiative has changed last week, and will remain that way.
  • Below is the explanation of the thematic, and its mechanics.

Spoiler

Thematic Explanation

Every turn players will be assaulted by the unnaturalness of the arena, and forced to steel their mind lest they go mad. On every post, no matter the action, must come with a ‘Madness’ Roll. On a CD of 6 or lower you gain 1 Madness.
Upon gaining your third Madness, you suffer from <Going Mad>. Consult the table below of which Full Post Action you take, then lose all Madness.

Note: The effects of going mad are instant, going after self healing and before main actions. Madness and Going Mad CANNOT be cured with cleanse abilities or items. other than those specifically stated to do so (Sanity Tablet, Straight Jacket)

CD Roll Effect
1 -2 Unequip current weapon
3-4 Use ST-1 or ST-2
5-6 Use an Item of your choice if no items, pass turn
7-8 Use the <Rest> Main Action
9-10 Become Stunned. Ignores immunity, does not reset immunity
11-12 Break Free of your Madness, No Effect

Initiative. 242552 | CD 7 LD 18 | No madness.

No audience this time. Perfect. Her face muscles sagged into a relaxed position, lending to a “default character creation” kind of face. No audience meant no performance, meant that she could focus on the important thing—winning.

She recognized her opponent from the recent floor boss. Hirru, the green hunter, stood a ready opponent. Support build or not, Acanthus was wary; she had no doubt his skills extended beyond healing. She mentally prepared herself for an unconventional battle.

The unconventional setting helped with that. A cosmic horror loomed in the distance, uttering words of madness into her head. Get in line, buddy. She was halfway surprised Hatred wasn’t here, mocking both her and the distant eldritch being.

The arena stood quiet as they waited for the announcer to start the match. Acanthus debated some kind of opening remark or comment; something cute and quippy like any of the good frontliners would have on the tip of their tongue. Or maybe a full, grand entrance like Kiyabu had planned. But she wasn’t a Kiyabu, and she wasn’t a good frontliner. She was just herself. Settling into the dull, flat monotony of impending madness, she drew botan and leveled it at her former squad mate. Her voice rang flat and lifeless on her own ears. <<May the best fighter win.>>

Although he was hoping that they were kidding when the Kindling had told them that the next fight would be on a floor of complete madness, he was hoping that they were just doing some wacky stunt.  Though, as he saw the town that they would be going to, it all was going horribly wrong.  They had only barely set up a forward operating base there, and that was just the little town square that they could hold.  Where in the world did these two find this place and have this thing 'watching' them.  The being above them was not something that he thought he would want to see, nor could he actually bring himself to want to see it.  There was no way that he was going to let that THING get to him.

"What ever you do, Songstress.  Don't look up for too long.  You know all as well as I do that we only barely ventured this floors mysteries."

He would warn Acanthus, though only addressing them as their job, as that was what he mostly knew them for.  He did remember them being there with them for the last floor boss, and hoped that it did not harm them in some way that he couldn't help with.  He couldn't even help himself if something else happened on this floor.  His mind would shutter for a second before coming back to.  There was no need for that.

The surrounding despair worked its way through the coliseum. It assailed her senses with familiar feelings from the grove, and from floor 13. And from the Bandit Camp on floor nine.

For a moment, Acanthus became uncertain of herself. Fighting was a bad idea. She was still uncomfortable from her display last week. She’d attacked a player in a blind battle fury. And here she was, indulging that kind of combat all over again.

No, this is nothing like floor nine. I’m in control of my emotions now. Breaking from the tendrils of madness, she rushed Hirru. She cut through his defenses in two breaths. Too easy.

But when the blade connected, she watched in dismay as his health moved slowly. He’s also running high mitigation. Her pain indicators affirmed the question and added new information, and with an additional status effect for Hirru. <<Thorns and Holy Blessing.>> she noted out loud. <<A mirror match, then. A long one, most likely.>> She pivoted backwards, opening up the space between her and Hirru. <<Your turn. Please don’t miss.>>

The match had only just started and it was clear that the Acanthus was a heavy contender for a tanking role.  They could actually hit and take hits while throwing out thorns and blocking with their shield.  It would be a firm and long fight indeed, if the hunter decided to stay on his no hit strategies, and that was only going to work on someone that did not have a weapon that could surpass his healing.  That and the tournaments own rules allow him to shelter down and keep his own self in play.  The big issue he had with his last few matches were that his opponents were heavy dps, with Fallen or Holy runic damage.  Though, Morningstar definitely found his ultimate weakness, being Burn and other DoTs.  He couldn't heal through those.

"If you think that this match is anything but equal, then I have something to tell you."

Raising his shield up, a green light would envelop his shield before falling back upon himself.  His passive healing along with the use of first aid would cause his health to bump back up to full.  Although, this was not his intended method for this round, as it was much more costly than just going on the defense.  The hunter figured that he wanted to show the denizen of this floor that they will not back down.

"I can't hurt you even if I'm forced to."

<<Really.>> Her flat voice tinged with amusement and frustration equally. <<Your solution is to wait me out? Patience wins only when there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, *hunter*>> Her voice dripped sarcasm on the last word.

Acanthus walked calmly towards the hunter like some mundane quest objective. About two meters away, she gauged the distance again, taking a few steps back for the perfect distance. And she took her time, slowly shuffling her feet back into a comfortable pouncing stance. What was he going to do, attack?

Botan’s light grew green and sickly, and its usual rose petals wilted to black on an invisible wind. A product of the floor’s corrupting influence, no doubt. <<The air, that smell… it’s the raid boss all over again. Do you feel it, Hirru?>> She grinned madly. The effects were starting to go to her head. It’s ok. I’m still in control of my emotions. <<We’re just missing one thing.>>

Her sword became Callisto’s claws, rending the air with sickly strokes. Acanthus ripped through his defenses, hit after hit, and painted his armor with red gashes. <<Don’t waste my time.>> She yelled, driving the final stab through his shoulder. <<If you’re hoping to outheal me, go ahead and quit.  I won’t think less of you. I don’t hit as hard as the others, but I sure as hell don’t miss.>>

"Heh heh!  That truly stung, in more ways than one.  You have a way with words more so than I figured."

The hunter would say as the woman took to this passive encounter rather oddly.  It was almost as if they were 'relishing' in the feeling.  Were they already struck by the madness that that being had placed down upon them both?  That ever present feeling of cold dread?  Were the oddities of this floor really that powerful?  He remembered the maddening effects of the last boss, but he only attributed that to the boss itself.  Was there really a connection?

"Besides, if I quit at every fight, then I wouldn't have come to the call.  You don't know how much I'm actually getting from all of this."

Another healing glow, but this time three rings of light would appear around the hunter's arm.  Those three rings would swivel and spin around and around his left arm.  Though, in all that could be said:  the hunter had not moved from the spot he started the match in, unless Acanthus moves him.

"Show me more of what you have, will you?  I doubt we want to bore our.. benefactors."

Another healing beam, and Acanthus scowled. Hirru was locked into his little game. <<I don’t care who we bore. I’m here to win, and if that means finishing you as the starting whistle for next week blows, then that’s how it is.>> Acanthus casually swiped through Hirru’s form a few more times. <<I’ll admit, I could have done a little more preparation. My luck with Vigilon lured me into a false sense of security. Frankly, I decided you weren’t worth spending coins on. But if I could go back and spend a few more, I’d nip your persistent little tricks right in the bud.>> She felt his thorns bite into her, and her pain indicators hummed gently. I’ll need to be more careful. If I hit him just right, I can avoid the chip damage from his defenses.

<<So what are you getting out of being here?>> She asked with mundane curiosity. <<I assume it’s more than just getting hit over and over.>>

"Information."

He would say calmly as the songstress would continually rip through his form over and over again.  Still he did not move unless needed.

"More so than what one can just convey.  Yes, you could tell me how your armor and your sword works, but I also can see the runes that are carved into them.  Appraisers have that capability to see what you have before you even use it."

Then he would point out to her from his hand that gripped his sword loosely.  He didn't need it.  He could do no harm to even a boar on the first floor, let alone another player.  Though, that didn't mean he didn't try to do so.  Though, in the end, it didn't really matter too much to begin with.  All in all, it was better to just observe through conflict, than to seek unobtainable knowledge.

"I want to know how you use them.  How your accurate little stick performs when you use it.  Does it contest from your usage?  Does it strain from you pushing out of the arts, pushing them past their limits?  Or does it follow through the motions of a system that binds us all."

He would question the very being of the system that would bring us into these messes and fight against it, if he could.

"Things of that nature.  You should see how versatile Oscar and Star have gotten.  Pushing the limits on what they can do, while still being held back."

Looking upon the songstress, he would watch for the next subtlety.

Acanthus listened intently to Hirru’s questions. They were good questions. One she shared, personally. <<How much of this is the blade, and how much of this is the person.>> She looked down at botan, swirling with energy. <<An honest question. It’s ridiculous to assume that everyone here turned into a master swordsman overnight. The items and such we use shape the way we fight, and Cardinal shapes our fights through the items we wear. Even as Cardinal binds us, it guides us.>> She hated how reverent her last words sounded out loud.

Acanthus prepared for another combo. It would have to keep the pressure up. She was about to lose the rest of her energy, while Hirru’s tricks brought him back up to nearly full. If she could not recover in time, then he would end up completely refreshed, and the cycle would begin anew. It would be impossible for either of them to win or lose.

There were many questions that the hunter could get into and most, if not all, would have no discernable answers.  Just more questions.  Most of those questions would then lead on to questions that one would not like to, nor would it be a ideal to speak upon.  Especially in the current circumstances, as there was no need to add more to the madness than what was currently being displayed on this cursed floor.  He would not succumb to the madness.  He would not ask the questions that would bring disaster.  He would not want the answers that he thought he sought.  Instead, he would listen only to the woman in front of him, and let her song sing.

"Were there ways to break through such limitation, then we could do so much more.  Though, as it is, we would not last against the weakest of mobs and bosses, let alone the floor bosses themselves, if we did not.  All we can do is sway the movement ever so slightly.  If any more, then the 'art' is ruined and falls apart."

There would be another engulfing of green light to boost his health back up once more.  He was already back to half of his health, but the hunter didn't know how much energy the songstress had.  All he could do was watch, analyze, and ask more questions.
