Hakai 0 Posted March 7 #1 Share Posted March 7 (edited) Reveal hidden contents Solo Every 5th post (post #5, post #10, post #15, etc), the player may roll to train their familiar as a post action. On a roll of CD 7+, the player succeeds in teaching their familiar something related to the Familiar Skill they are attempting to unlock. Because even failed attempts possess glimmers of insight, for every failed attempt to train the Familiar, the CD requirement is reduced by 2. After 3 successful successes, the Familiar will be considered trained. The wind whistled through the heavy foliage of the eight floor, the small alcove Hakai found herself nestled in providing little in the way of protection from the strong gust. She let out a little pfft of breath, the hair that had managed to find it's way into her mouth fluttering momentarily before falling back into place. This was definitely one of her favorite floors. The walls of trees in every direction lended itself to a sense of privacy, pretty much wherever you went. A rustling near her feet drew her attention, the white and black snake that she had befriended long ago slithering out of the long grass to slowly wrap around her leg in a friendly embrace. The woman slowly knelt down, her calloused fingers gently brushing the smooth scales of the reptiles diamond shaped head. "Hello my useless little friend!" She muttered under her breath to the creature. Her fingers gently wrapped themselves around the serpent, slowly and carefully extricating it from around her ankle. The snake let out a loud hiss of discontent, but allowed itself to be moved. With her living jewelry now safely secured around her arm like some sort of exotic bangle, the young woman slowly stood up from her crouch. "What do you say we put you to work for once? You cant come when I get out of here, but if you do a good job I at least won't expunge you from my memory. That's almost as good as living, right?" That wouldn't be for a long time anyway. At the rate the floors were being cleared she would be an old lady by the time any of them cleared the hundredth floor. She took a few steps forward in a random direction. "Now, show me where to find a dungeon!" Edited March 7 by Hakai

The snake's forked tongue flickered out, it's head raised up and slowly panning like it was attempting to sense something. Hakai had heard once that snakes could smell heat and see in infrared. Was this the moment her pet went from deadweight to mystic metal detector? After a brief moment the serpent stopped moving, it's diamond shaped head firmly fixed in one direction. Even when she moved the direction of her arm her pet continued to point in the same direction. Of course the pet of someone as extraordinary as her would succeed on the first try. She moved forward, carefully making her way through the roots and leaves that covered the forest floor, threatening to trip her. Following the cryptic instructions of her pet, she stopped next to a fallen log. "This isn't a dungeon little guy. But nice try I guess." Brushing her hand along the forest floor, moving some large leaves and sticks around, she did manage to find a small chunk of what appeared to be iron. "Not a total failure I guess..." The ginger booped her pet snake gently, sliding the material into her inventory with her other hand. "I'm talking hidden areas, secret enemies, treasure chests and lots of money." She glanced over at the serpent who was staring back at her with it's head cocked to the side in confusion. It seemed the creature believed that it had accomplished what had been asked of it. Hakai let out a sigh and mimed swinging her sword in the air, making a swishing noise followed up by an explosion sound effect. It didn't seem to be getting through to the little guy. "Alright, lets give it another shot. Lead the way." Expecting a repeat performance, but still hopeful, she started to follow the direction her snake friend was pointing her. Her little snake compass surely wouldn't fail her this time... Another piece of metal hidden in the brush. At least he was consistent. Edited March 7 by Hakai
Hakai 0 Posted March 7 Author #5 Share Posted March 7 (edited) ID: 242915 CD: 5 Failure Requirement reduced by 2 She paused for a moment, contemplating how to resolve the obvious miscommunication. The pet obviously understood the concept that they were supposed to be searching for something. That much was clear from the two materials she now had in her inventory. Maybe she needed to stress the whole enemy thing. "No, we need to find somewhere with enemies. Somewhere to fight but that also has treasure. Preferably more than just a single material." She let her breath out in a huff. This was getting to her more than it should be. "Try to find some enemies this time; focus on that." The familiar stared back at her before wrapping it's coils tighter around her arm and beginning to climb down to the forest floor where it slithered off into the grass. A few tense moments passed, the leaves rustling peacefully in the wind as she waited for the return of her familiar. Finally, after what seemed like a long wait, but was probably only a minute or two, the pet returned, writhing at the corner of the clearing in an attempt to get her attention. Progress. Maybe. Hakai 0 Posted March 8 Author #6 Share Posted March 8 (edited) Maneuvering her way through the brush behind her snake, she soon found herself in another clearing. This one, however, was occupied. Not by a dungeon, or materials, but by 4 strangely large monkeys. In a forest like this one that was hardly strange, but these monkeys had bandanas of different colors tied fashionably around their foreheads. Upon seeing Hakai, they all struck various martial arts poses. She recognized a few. That was the tiger stance, the next the crane. the third the praying mantis, and the last.... He just looked like a monkey. Regardless, it was apparent that they weren't just going to let her leave. One on one fights were the best to get the blood flowing, and the adrenaline pumping, but trash mobs were the best for loot. These were obviously the latter. Hakai unsheathed her katana, the blade making a swishing noise as it cut through the air menacingly. The scene seemed to freeze as both sides waited for the other to make the first move. Hakai slammed her heel into the ground, her center of gravity shifting forward as she sprinted in. A broad reaching slash, ending in a spin, would leave her open to a reactive follow up. Her blade sang as it cleaved through the first monkey, only gathering speed as it sliced through the third and fourth monkeys. She spun, the jacket tied around her waist flaring out as she turned her back, preparing for a follow up, only to feel a searing pain in her left shoulder. Hakai 0 Posted March 8 Author #7 Share Posted March 8 (edited) With the back being one of the tougher parts of the human body, the damage wasn't too severe. It looked like one of the monkeys that she had failed to kill in one shot had managed to claw into her shoulder. She continued the momentum of the spin, making a mental note not to underestimate the tenacity of enemies made up of ones and zeros. Her leg muscles tensed as she slipped into a more bladed stance, unleashing the strongest of her sword arts, slashing ferociously at the one unscathed monkey, hacking it to pieces before it shattered into red particles. She twisted to face the remaining monkey, the other two falling over as they succumbed to her bleed proc. "It's just you and me." The last monkey standing howled, in anger or grief she couldn't tell, before rushing at her wildly. She easily slipped around the attacks, maneuvering around carefully as she looked for the opportunity to counter attack. "You're nothing much now that my back isn't turned..." Hakai 0 Posted March 8 Author #8 Share Posted March 8 (edited) Hakai dodged and weaved, slowly growing used to the monkey's attack patterns. Now that the fight was one on one there was no reason to rush in recklessly. Before she had wanted to take control of the flow of the fight aggressively, but now she controlled it defensively. Ducking under a particularly aggressive swing, she saw her moment. The martial monkey had committed a hair too much to the attack, his center of balance shifting ever so much. Her previously passive blade sang with the sound of steel on bone as it penetrated straight through the primate's chest, nearly down to the tang. Her heel landed with a thud a moment later, forcefully ripping the sword from it's temporary sheath. She swiped the air with her fingers, paying no heed to the disintegrating corpse below her. The info screen that popped up was disappointing. "Not the kind of loot I was looking for." Her scowl faded slowly as she made her way to the edge of the clearing, picking up her snake friend carefully. Rolls and Maths: Reveal hidden contents ID: 242936 | BD: 8 | Hit! Her fingers trailed gently over the snakes diamond shaped head as it coiled back around her arm. The pet had failed it's duty, but she couldn't bring herself to be too upset with it. It was an animal, it followed its instincts. It did what it was designed to do, and training it to do more was bound to be difficult. It seemed to like finding shiny things, she just needed to teach it to find the right ones. The snake's tongue flickered out as it wiggled happily from the pets. Did this seem like encouragement? She didn't want to encourage it to do the wrong thing when she was trying to train it. But she didnt really know what else to do, she wasn't a snake charmer, she just admired snakes for the predators they were. She shook her head gently, refocusing on the task at hand. How to communicate to the snake that it was supposed to track down a dungeon? Then it hit her. It was super obvious and she didnt know how she hadnt thought of it before. She just had to go find one herself to show her pet how it was done. Edited March 8 by Hakai
Hakai 0 Posted March 8 Author #10 Share Posted March 8 (edited) ID: 242949 | CD: 3| Training failed (i see how it is) CD req now: 3 A dungeon was a hidden area with monsters and a big treasure at the end. The key was that it was hidden. With one last pet of her serpent she trudged deeper into the surrounding forest. She was looking for a place that others hadn't found yet, so the deeper she went the higher her odds of finding one were. She had invested rather heavily in her own scouting abilities and her intention with her familiar was to double down on that specialty. There were riches in her future if she could manage to figure this out. It wasn't going so well though. She brushed the foliage aside and made her way through a particularly nasty area of brush, the sticks and vines scratching and scraping at her as she passed by. Undiscouraged she continued forward guided by the instincts she prided herself on. She could almost feel the dungeon up ahead. Edited March 8 by Hakai

No dungeon found It only took a few more feet before Hakai started to realize that she had made a mistake somewhere along the line. The tree line had started to thin, and it was becoming more and more apparent that she was getting very close to the main settlement, Ellesmera. She wasn't quite sure where she had gotten turned around, but this was very obviously the opposite direction of where she had intended to head. Hakai grumbled to herself as she backtracked, attempting to find her way back to the clearing where she had found the first group of mobs. She had been feeling herself, but fate or her sense of direction, had decided to humble her. Ducking, she made her way through the same nasty bit of foliage, managing to avoid scratches this time. The next thing she came across had better be prepared, they were going to catch the full brunt of her frustration and annoyance. Edited March 8 by Hakai
Hakai 0 Posted March 8 Author #12 Share Posted March 8 (edited) -2 EN Her foot caught on an upraised root, and she stumbled out of the brush and into what she was fairly certain was the same clearing she had fought in last time. Only this time there was an entirely different group of enemies. It seemed the enemies in this game liked to travel in groups of four. They were gorillas this time, each of them nearly two times the size of the previous monkeys. There was a horrible stench, and on further inspection they seem to have rotten extremities. Zombie gorillas? No, everything else about the was fine. They must just be suffering from some kind of medical condition. Hakai's nose scrunched up. She didn't want to touch them. The gorillas didnt seem to share the same sentiment. Hyperfocused on defense, Hakai slipped in between attacks, looking for the perfect moment to strike. She was not going to get anywhere near those nasty fingers and toes if she could help it. That was just too much. She slashed at the group, her swing wild and messy. She had been paying too much attention to avoiding the Gorilla's nasty extremities, and not enough to maintaining her balance. Her sword cleaved through one enemy and then a second before she found herself stumbling forward directly into the rotten fist of another gorilla. Before she could even process the pain from the squelchy awful strike she was hit with a kick to her side, knocking her away and onto the ground. She gasped, the breath knocked out of her. "Next time im hunting with other people." She wheezed out. This was starting to get dangerous. Sometimes it was easy to forget that this was a death game; it took moments lik this to remind her. Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #14 Share Posted March 9 (edited) Hakai rolled over, clambering to her feet as fast as she could to face her enemies. Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. The filth had actually touched her. Unforgivable. She scowled, her legs propelling her forwards as she gripped the handle of her katana tighter. She twisted, putting her whole body into the slash, wind whistling as the sharp blade sliced through the air. One, two, three, the katana ripped through the three gorillas, decapitating them all cleanly. She whirled towards the remaining one, intending to give it the same treatment, only to see it collapse and burst into red crystals all on it's own; the bleed proccing a second time and finishing it off. She sheathed her sword in one smooth motion. That was nasty. She didn't want to have to deal with anything like that again. She swiped at the screen in the air in front of her. Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #15 Share Posted March 9 (edited) ID: 242969 | CD: 10 Success! Unidentified weapons and armor, just what she liked to see. She had been thinking about opening her shop back up but didnt have any stock or anything to practice on to rank up. It seemed like some of her prayers had been answered for once. Then again that was giving a lot of credit to some higher power when she was the one doing all the work. It only made sense that she would be rewarded for her efforts. Her snake slithered up her arm and across her shoulder, draping itself over the back of her neck. She gave it a little boop. "Dungeons and treasures, got it? You found materials before, then enemies. Now combine the two. And that's a dungeon." She felt kind of dumb talking to a snake, but she couldnt think of another way to communicate with it. She frowned, hoping that somehow her familiar would understand, before moving off deeper into the forest in search of something she could use as an example. The visual medium was probably best for something like this. Edited March 9 by Hakai
Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #16 Share Posted March 9 Hakai crossed her arms, kicking up dirt as she made her way deeper into the forest, following a game trail that she had stumbled on earlier. She would assume that it would likely lead to a body of water, some kind of stream or river where animals got drinking water. She didn't know if there was a correlation between more wildlife and a higher likelyhood of a dungeon, but she had a feeling that it would lead to something. Hopefully not to the monkey king though. She might be able to handle it herself, but she'd rather not risk it, not by herself. She ducked under an overhanging branch, pushing the foliage out of her way. This path wasn't made for humans, which made navigating it a bit of a hassle. The scrapes and tears on her arms and legs were a testament to that. Next time she would pick an area that was easier to navigate, like floor five.
Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #17 Share Posted March 9 She fumbled her way through the branches, being careful not to get her clothes caught on anything. The trail seemed to be fading as she followed it, making her question whether she had gone the right direction or not. She focused on her hearing instead of her sight, listening for any splashing or rushing sound of water. At times like this when vision was obscured, she had to rely on her other senses to navigate. There. Ever so faintly she could make out the burbling of a creek, and in the direction she had been going too. She had been beginning to feel as though she was losing her touch. She prided herself on her navigation skills, it was good to see that the rust was coming off. With a sound of metal on metal she unsheathed her katana, hacking her way through some particularly rough vines and leaves in search of the creek up ahead.
Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #18 Share Posted March 9 There it was, right up ahead. Hakai pushed her way through the final barrier of bushes and branches, coming out into a clear section right in front of a stream. The banks of the brook were clear, the muddy banks overrun with various animal tracks. There were no animals in sight, the clumsy way she had maneuvered through the forest had likely alerted them long before she even got close. That was fine though, she wasn't here to hunt rabbits and deer. This was a treasure hunt, not an animal hunt. And her next destination was downstream. She wanted to follow the creek, avoiding the annoyance of the dense foliage she had been dealing with up until that point, while keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. She was confident that there would be signs sooner or later that would lead her to a dungeon. And dungeons meant money and treasure.
Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #19 Share Posted March 9 Her boots squelched as she maneuvered her way on the bank of the river, being careful not to slip. The footing wasn't terrible, but it was eating away at her stamina little by little. Still better than hacking and slashing her way through branches an leaves. She could see tiny fish swimming through the crystal clear water, seemingly unaffected by the fast current. They dipped behind rocks and circled small pools of still water where the stream was blocked by small rocks. This game's ability to emulate real life was remarkable sometimes. She took a deep breath, the cool breeze refreshing after hiking for so long. She liked being alone. She didnt feel as though she could relax around others and truly enjoy the moment like she could by herself. People were worse than animals in a lot of ways... They were certainly capable of a lot worse too. She frowned to herself. These musings were killing the mood.
Hakai 0 Posted March 9 Author #20 Share Posted March 9 (edited) ID: 242972 | CD: 2 Failure, req now 1 The sunlight shone across the reflective surface of the water, casting patterns on the river bank. Hakai trudged along, leaving deep boot prints in the silt on mud. Her eyes darted over the tree line, looking for anything out of the ordinary, any sign or mark that might lead her to a dungeon. Some kind of trap door hidden in the brush, or a cave sheltered in the rocks and boulders that dotted the bank on either side. Nothing so far. It seemed like she would have to go further, much further, before coming across one. She brushed her hand across her forehead, wiping sweat off her brow. As much as she liked hiking, this was getting to be a pain. She was starting to daydream about a nice beef stew and some buttered bread, and cool inn room. That was for later though. She refocused on the task at hand, speeding up her pace slightly. Edited March 9 by Hakai
