[Clash Of Blades Season 1] Week 5: Vigilon v Telrenya

Recommended Posts

The two competitors were left there, huffing and puffing and struggling to push themselves and keep going. How long had it been now? Telrenya knelt with one foot planted on the rough tile floor, hunched over herself after having just narrowly escaped one more of Vigilon’s onslaughts. Memories of her very first match came back to her involuntarily. Would they be called for time? She glanced between the health bar in the upper corner of her vision and the one that hovered in the air, wrapped around Vigilon’s side. It was hard to tell, but she thought his was more full. If they timed out here, he would win.

That bitter feeling crept back into the back of her throat. It was as if she had already heard Minako’s voice echoing the same words that Kindling had back then. She glanced nervously to the side, where she spotted their host watching them carefully. Telrenya’s eyes searched for intent, but she didn’t seem ready to leap into the arena and call the match.

She pushed herself up, placing a hand firmly on her bent knee for leverage. When she stood back at her full height, she still stumbled a little. The effects of her earlier ability were seeing her energy would tick up a bit faster than normal, but she was still teetering on the bare minimum to attack. She needed a little more. Vigilon seemed hardly in any condition to keep throwing himself at her, either, but she didn’t know him well enough to discount recklessness. With only the sound of their labored breaths and the murmurings of an uneasy crowd to fill the silence between them, Telrenya raised her blade, preparing herself for the next–and possibly the last–bout.

The fighters had slowed to a stop, both of them each taking a moment to recover their energy for their next moves. While the noise lessened, the tension remained in the air. Who would take the opportunity to strike first? If so, could the other dodge or deflect before taking action themselves? The question was not if one would take action, but when?

Vigilon nearly fell to the ground. He stuck his weapon to the ground to try and hold himself up. This battle had taken a toll on both combatants. Maybe for now it would be best to keep an eye on his opponent, right? "If I lose to her now, I'm going to look very stupid..." He thought, despite there being no trace of offense or judgement in his mind. Everyone had their bad days, everyone struggled...it's just, now that he was finally fighting on equal terms with someone, why did he feel as though he was putting up with disadvantage? Telrenya was a real speedster, yes, and although Vigilon hoped to see her reach the brackets, would it really be worth the trouble of signing up and fighting in the tournament if he went down here? Furthermore, what kind of opponents had Telrenya been getting bullied and pitied by if Vigilon was struggling against her?

In a tournament such as this, one mistake within it could easily cost him everything, even outside the tournament itself. If he failed here, there's no telling what he might feel here, or what others might think of him. There were legitimate crowds now, and people were earning names. Vigilon took a deep breath, and got up to his feet. He needed to keep on fighting, and he would fight to the end...if anything, should he suffer another embarrassing loss, at least it wouldn't be worse than those other times.

Her breathing became a little steadier. Cardinal was easing up on the signals of fatigue the more her quantified energy regenerated. She hadn’t expected all of this to be so hard. The prospect of a tournament didn’t sound easy, of course, but it wasn’t supposed to be this. It was supposed to be like those sparring days at the park in Taft. ‘First one to tag Jomei wins’, she remembered the game they played in order to train their combat skills. Friendly competition, a quick bout, a test of skills, and then one person would emerge the victor. So then why was this all so difficult? She didn’t have to do this to get back on the frontlines. This wasn’t some barrier to entry–she hadn’t even thought of it that was as a self-imposed trial. ”I just thought…this might be a good way to get out of my head.” She thought aloud, her shoulders still rising and falling with weighty breaths. For the briefest of moments, she wondered how literally she meant that after all. Then her thoughts retreated back inside, ’And start talking to people again.’

She wondered why the man across from her was here. She could come up with a handful of reasons why anyone would have signed up, but she was sure that each person must have had something specific that drew them to it. ”No matter what happens, it’s been a good show.” She smiled softly towards him. The noise of the crowd had died down. It was almost silent in the arena, yet no less seats were empty than before. Anticipation lingered in the air, growing thick and heavy and looming like a dome over their battlefield. Dozens and dozens of eyes were fixed on the two of them. Watching. Waiting.

This all started with a willingness to test oneself. He didn't think this tournament would become so wide, so known, so populated, to the point where it just wasn't a simple set of duels anymore, and now there was a multitude of witnesses to the whole event. One little slip could cost Vigilon everything...and he could only hope that what happened next wouldn't ruin him forever.

Vigilon nodded his head in agreement when Telrenya noted that the two players succeeded in putting on a show, regardless of the result. "Agreed." He stated. Well, what was needed now was a good finisher to top it all off, right? Now if Vigilon could at least manage that...

Vigilon got into position, and readied a sword art. A sudden woosh, a gust of wind passing by as Vigilon began to advance towards Telrenya. It all happened so fast, it was as though gravity flipped on itself...no, Vigilon slipped in an arena one would not normally slip in. It didn't make any sense. Vigilon landed on his back, then sat up in time to witness the shattering of a banana peel. Vigilon was confused, and those among the crowd were equally confused. How in the world did it get there? Vigilon blinked. He wasn't sure what to make of this, nor who was responsible. He doubted anyone he could see was responsible, it just wouldn't make sense in an honorable duel like this one.

While the air was thick with tension is when comedy struck. Telrenya matched his pause, blinking in confusion when Vigilon ate concrete across from her. She gave a quick glance to either side of them, then uncomfortably flashed her free palm out as if to deny any accusation that she might have tossed some paraphernalia onto the battlefield. Though no accusations came her way. Her opponent seemed just as confused as she was.

Was it poor form to strike at this moment of uncertainty? Maybe. But the dwindling effects of her second wind made Telrenya feel jumpy. Eager. Impatient. No sooner was Vigilon back on his feet than Telrenya bounced on the balls of hers and her sword rang with the preparation of an art. ”Get ready!” She shouted, giving the barest of warnings before she jumped back onto the offensive.

When she struck true, she was again felt the bite of his flames. Preparing for a follow-up, she stole a glance towards their host’s elevated platform, then at each of their health bars. They were too close to tell. She wasn’t sure who was in the lead. But she refused to let this end like her first match. Whether she won or lost, she had to hurry.

Vigilon got on his feet, only for Telrenya to alert him to her attack, which landed regardless of his attempt to defend. The crowd's noise flared to life as the true climax of the battle began. Vigilon's HP was definitely getting chipped away at, but so was Telrenya's. It was looking really close at this moment. In this battle, which had now truly become a close fight in which both combatants had a lot on the line; a lot to lose.

Vigilon took deep breaths, and his focus dipped into the recesses of his mind, and he would find himself soothed by familiar voices deep within. His energy would replenish slightly, then it was back to the battle. He noticed Telrenya looking towards the Hostess's elevated platform. "Watch out, your guard's down!" Vigilon called out as he advanced with his sword art activated. Unfortunately for Telrenya, it seemed her reaction timing might have been a little late, as Kyrkuran's flames blazed to life before the attack landed. For a third time, Vigilon's attacks had left Telrenya afflicted with ailments. Vigilon scratched the back of his neck with his free hand. "Wanna make one last shot or two and see if you can manage to make it close again?" He asked. She was definitely swift enough to dodge the majority of Vigilon's attacks. It wouldn't be easy for her, but Telrenya still had a path to victory here.

Her eyes went wide and her body twisted, but her reaction was too slow. She winced as his blade cut deep into her side and she was awarded another bright red, festering wound upon her avatar. Unable to force her own counterattack, she scrambled to leave his range. The color of her health bar shifted to red even before the lingering burn and blight stole away a bit more of it.

Telrenya felt backed into a corner. Her opponent’s words edged on taunting in her ears. For every single strike he landed on her, Telrenya had to hit three, all while clawing past his armor and gritting her teeth through the retaliatory damage. Her free hand hovered in front of her chest and, without thinking, she nearly activated her «First Aid» ability. Instinct told her that when her health was low, it must be replenished. But something gave her pause. Doubt crept into her mind, and instead her fingers just twitched lightly. In her other hand, she gripped her rapier tightly.

A poor decision.

She abandoned the thought of stabilizing her health pool in favor of an unrelenting offense. Surely, her opponent’s energy must be waning. If she just pushed the attack, if she continued chaining her sword arts, if she tried harder...

Desperation made her sloppy. Even with Cardinal guiding her sword, forcing her arm to move in a certain way, tugging at her body like a marionette, her tired movements were like cinderblocks strapped to her limbs.”I’m. Not. Giving. Up!” The stabs and swipes that whipped through the air past Vigilon were punctuated by her declaration. Whether those words were meant for her opponent or herself, however, were anyone’s guess.

-Both players have had their desperation for victory in this battle. What started off as a duel for the two to test themselves had become a struggle to stay afloat in the relentless crashing waves of competition. Telrenya was now feeling more severely than Vigilon was, based on her response to Vigilon and his words. He hoped to encourage Telrenya, as a close match like this one would surely be a sight for the crowd to see, regardless of who wins. In Vigilon's eyes, both had been tested, with neither opponent found wanting. He could only hope the crowd would see the same, for he couldn't read minds.

Telrenya chose to stay on the offensive, but it seemed the damage and the time spent fighting had taken a toll on her, as her attacks were easier to dodge than anticipated. Vigilon backed up alongside his movements dodging, but more so that he didn't accidentally offer anything for her to trip over, and her footsteps seemed slow and heavy. Despite this, she declared that she wasn't giving up. Vigilon nodded. "Yes, let that be your thought process throughout the remainder of this battle, and for the rest of this tournament!" Vigilon encouraged. Determination could really go a long way. It could even pave the way for comebacks.

Unfortunately, it seemed that fate had other plans...for this battle, at least. Victory would come at a cost, defeat would come at a cost. Vigilon activated his sword art, anticipating that she would dodge. He readied his focus, aware that she could still dodge such attacks. A simple chain of three swings, finished with a burst of the fallen energy from Kyrkuran...and the battle was over.

Vigilon watched, his eyes widening as his opponent failed to get back up. "Shoot, did I go too hard?"
He put away his weapon, wondering if Telrenya was alright. He got close and waited for the Hostess of the match to call it and heal Telrenya, then he would speak. "Hey, sorry if I hit you too hard there..." He began. "I don't care what the others might say, I think you did really well. You kept me on my toes this whole fight, I think I actually had...fun..." He added, slowly breaking into a smile at the end. He then offered his hand to help her back up. Friendly competition, in good sport and good fun. Such was rare in the lives of those who traveled in Aincrad...
