Namine 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #21 Share Posted January 28, 2013 I had actually mentioned just a head-shot as that'd be easiest to keep up, just do hair and expression, but was told that part of the SAO appeal was the outfits. But for the purposes of avatars, think that'd be the quickest route to maintain SAO style while giving some customization. I've done something kinda like that before. (le old) Yeah something like that I'm cool with as well.
Nevina 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #22 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Thought I'd do a preliminary draw-up test thingy. Traced over some headshots so it has the SAO style (this one has Kirito's head shape and Asuna's face XD). Got lines/skin on different layers and whatnot. Thoughts?
Guest Posted January 28, 2013 #23 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Love it, although is it possible to make the head smaller so you can see the whole hair?
Guest Posted January 28, 2013 #24 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Tah-duh bangs and back hair style will be separate to create more creativity Nevina's
Nevina 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #25 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Looks lovely! Only thing I'm concerned about is the shading style. You used a sort of mix between cel and soft, and I'm wondering if we should stick strictly to cel style so it's more consistent when mix 'n matching between hairs and is closer to sao style? It looks great artistically, just wondering if we should match up the type of art styles a bit more.
Erroneous 0 Posted January 28, 2013 Author #26 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Your bases Nevina shouldn't have eye sockets, brows, or a mouth. It be hard to give people expressions.
Crim 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #27 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Even with the facial expression, it looks pretty good and all Faceial expressions are, are just lines mostly except for the eyes. Even the hair looks really good. ^_^ keep it up and cant wait to see what else you come up with :D
Guest Posted January 28, 2013 #28 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Looks really cool. I like the headshot idea.
Nevina 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #29 Share Posted January 28, 2013 (at work, short post) The expressions are on separate layers/folders (eyes/eyebrows/mouths each in own spot), so don't worry about that. I've done spriting before 8D
Crim 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #30 Share Posted January 28, 2013 I could never tell Nevina ;)
Mythee 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #31 Share Posted January 28, 2013 That is glorious, Sarasah, and grants my wish of SAO avatars actually being SAO-ish. QuQ <3 I agree that keeping to cel shading would probably be for the best, though. Do you think the sprite system stock would be open to user contribution, provided the quality standards are met- thus allowing for help expanding the stock, or would there be regular staff for it? I really can't even shade, I just mush all lights and darks together and hope for the best 8D... I can try another hair style and see what I can do >_<;
Nevina 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #33 Share Posted January 28, 2013 I could totally work with you on how to do cel styles! I think it'd be a fun experience 8D I did another hairstyle, but I'm at work now so don't have the files with me XD But if you'd be up for it or have the time/interest, we could try swapping psd files at each step and work through it? Guest Posted January 28, 2013 #34 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Sounds great -- I know its somewhat easy, I just can't determine the right spots for shading D: And also my mushy hair coloring draws attention away from my mistakes 8D...

I've done spriting before 8D Seriously though it's limited, but simple. The hair pieces Sarasah showed off are pretty nice looking too. I think this'll work out pretty well. Mythee 0 Posted January 28, 2013 #36 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Hair shading in the anime is really minimal- often not even a single layer of light shading and a single layer of dark shading, but yeah, I think that's what would work best for efficiency and consistency. Where the light hits the most, a band of light curving along the shape the hair is falling in, and where it is shielded away from the light ex.: inner layers of hair and where hair is casting a shadow on other hair, a darker shade. Guest Posted January 30, 2013 #40 Share Posted January 30, 2013 So, Nevina and I have been making more sprites but we never came to the conclusion if this was a approved project?
