« Description »

Jagged, unrestrained, and thick are some of the better words to describe the inky black mess residing on Shard's head. There is nothing elegant or refined about his hair, short cropped with labour and simplicities sake in mind, it hangs on the edge of utilitarian and lazy, Shard himself insisting that longer hair is only useful if you were planning on getting it cut. His eyes could be weapons on their own right, appearing as if carved obsidian; jet black, severe, and piercing. Able to strike the hearts of his foes, and equally those he tries to near, his eyes are very essence of his face. His strong brows, angular and sharp. His nose, smooth and solid, able to take a hit. His jaw, strong and smoothly carved. His body described in a word: Impressive. Well built over years of intense physical training, and reaching an imposing six foot four, Shard's presence can be dominating, if outright terrifying. Or at least it would be, if things in SAO were not based on game stats... His body makes him seem quite at home working a forge, gathering resources, and slaying fell hordes of inhuman monsters.

Generally, within settlements and safe-zones, Shard wears functional, if boring clothing, well suited to most environments barring the extreme.

« History »

Reiji "Shard" Smith is what is known as a "Halfu", one one born from a Japanese parent and a foreigner. In Shard's case, his father is an American soldier stationed in Japan, who had met this mother while she worked at a store near his father's base. Fast forward twenty years, a messy divorce, and a few years spent living in the states, and we meet Shard as a eighteen year old, returning to Japan for the first time in years to start his university life.

Shard himself could be described as misunderstood, annoyed, and well meaning. From his father's side of the family, Shard's appearance is one of a hardened background. His body is lean and lengthy, almost 200cm's tall. His skin is a deep tan, as if he was born and raised to toil under the sun. His eyes sharp, and piercing; what's known as "sanpaku" in Japanese culture.

In the Japan, when his parents were together and he was still a young boy in middle school, he was often teased for being a halfu, even if his hair, eyes and skin were near the same colour of the rest of the children. When he went with his father to the states, Shard was continued to be bullied, seen as a target to prove ones worth, due to Shard's size and appearance. The truth of the matter is, Shard would never lift a finger to stop attacks, both physical and verbal.

As a child, he once stood up to a bully, only to hurt the bully more then he intended, putting the child in the hospital. Ever since, Shard had avoided conflict- or at least, promised he would never hurt someone like that again. By his last year of high school, Shard had perfected the art of looking like one tough SOB. The bullying stopped, and with it, most of Shard's social life. The frown the young man carried warded off both foes and friend alike. Still, in the end, Shard is still a good person, and would put himself in the way of danger to help others at any moment. He has a deep respect for the law, and people in general. He was once described as a teddybear. He never liked the likeness, but he never had the heart to deny it..

Shard's interest in SAO sprouted from his fascination with video games, which came about due to his social reclusiveness in high school. Video games were an escape, where he could pretend to be anyone without people judging him, and he could vent anger without actually hurting anyone. People don't actually get hurt in video games.

Returning to Japan after his graduation, Shard reunited with his mother and younger brother, who he had not seen in over two years, living with them once more as he attended university. The first thing he did when he arrived in Japan was to order his NERVEgear, and set himself up to buy a copy of SAO, which would be releasing online in a few days. Shard was one of the lucky few thousand who clicked "add to cart" the instant it appeared, getting himself a pass into the first VRMMORPG to hit the Japanese market...

« Virtues »

Honourable: "Fair, or not at all."
Shard is a man. A "true" man. He does not take advantage, he does not cheat people, he does not see the point in harming others in a game where the stakes are death.

Selfless: "Here. Take it. You need it more."
Shard see's value in life. He does not think his is worth any less then other's, but perhaps the thought of being able to save someone else makes him think his will be all the more worth it. He realizes that people will die on the journey to the 100th floor. If he can help save everyone trapped here, his life is worth it.

Pragmatic: "No one wants this. We all need it."
Shard does however see when hard choices must be made. Not only that, but having the ability to understand the situations of others, allowing him to make better choices.

Observant/Reserved: "...Your fly's down"
Shard is at best, an introvert. It's not to say he cant interact with people, or that social situations stress him out, so much as he was never one to speak more then he needed. His words seemed clipped, as if he is trying to conserve the energy of speaking. Due to this mind frame, Shard has become highly observant, seeing the world though critical eyes. Though he may not say it, you can be sure he is thinking it.

« Flaws »

Vengeful : "I'll make you regret that."
For all of Shard's honour and pragmatism, he tends to hold onto things and people dearly. If he were ever to gain an attachment to something or someone, and have that taken from them, the chances are, Shard will bring his stubbornness to bare. With a single mindedness like no other, Shard would challenge players much higher levels then himself, if he thought the justification was there.

Gruff: "What?"
Shard's physical appearance and standard mode of interaction is never the most popular around. Charisma is not something Shard carries around on his sleeve.

Stubborn: "Nope."
When Shard decides to do something, there is a good chance he wont stop until its done. He is goal oriented, and at times, when it comes to dealing with people, he's outright inflexible. This will especially come out if it pertains to something important. Shard is likely to go to all stops to achieve an objective, even if it ends with him bloody and beaten to a pulp.

Silent Character Syndrome: "..."
The unfortunate downside of Shard's reserved nature, is his apparent lack of a vocabulary. Shard very rarely ever speaks on his own, full sentences being a rarity at the best of times. He has been known to speak in more complete terms in two cases: Being comfortable around someone, or talking to an NPC. At least NPC's can't judge, right?
