Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #21 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur tried to limit his breathing as much as he could. He didn't know how stealth and detection worked in this game, so he didn't know if his breathing would help the bat find him or not. He held the Katana up in both hands and scanned the blackness. The <<Giant Bat>> was huge, and so it's hitbox was even larger. It only meant he could tell which direction the mob would come from, not anything about its shape or the type of the attack. That was when he heard the screech. Not the fury that had injured him before, but one that seemed a kind of echo-location. Taking a gamble, Baldur slashed wildly as he dove to the side. His sword struck nothing but the air, but then the same could be said of the giant guano factory. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #22 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur thought he was ready for the creature, but just as before, attacking the fleshy bits of the wings seemed to infuriate the creature and it let out a cry so powerful it made his head hurt, and the air in his lungs seemed to vibrate like someone playing their music so loud in their car they were trying to impress their dead girlfriend buried 400 miles away. That was certainly something Baldur didn't miss about being stuck in this death trap of a game. Small miracles. Dropping to his knee, Baldur couldn't bring himself to swing, but the special effects of the move seemed to help him locate the position of the mob. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #23 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur rushed forward, the uneven terrain was still confusing him, but thankfully there was nothing between the two of them. When he got close enough to where he thought the special effect of the creature's move was, he slashed with his katana and was pleased to hear the hissing shriek of the mob and a slight resistance to his blow. "I've got you now you stupid flying rat!" Baldur knew the taunt would fall on deaf ears, but it helped him release some of his frustration. Immediately after his blow, Baldur ducked low and moved forward, putting himself closer to the mob than he was just a second ago and making it awkward for the creature to reach him while being so close. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #24 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur <<Concentrated>> trying to use his hearing to tell him what he could about the creature's movements. He heard a heavy inhale of breath and felt a gentle breeze. In his mind's eye, this was the bat creature reeling up to its full height in preparation for some kind of attack or maybe taking to the air. Baldur quickly slashed, afraid of the creature moving out of his range and his sword caught the <<Giant Bat>> full on! The bat hissed and the sound of it crashing back to the floor only served to convict him of his thoughts. What he wasn't expecting was the creature to lash out at him with its feet, striking a heavy blow against and throwing him back out of reach of the creature once more. Ugh! Just when I finally got in close! Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #25 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur and the bat seemed to rise as one, but the bat was able to rise higher. He felt the wind begin to stirr around him and suddenly he was lifted off his feet and thrown about the room. "Aahhhh!" Baldur cried out in surprise and complete disorientation. He couldn't tell which direction was up or down, where the mob was, or where anything was. Then just as quickly as it had happened, the winds vanished. Baldur had a panicked, cartoon moment of being suspended in the air before falling to the ground hard. His body hit a stalagmite and with a loud CRASH the rock broke under the force of impact. If this had been the real world, Baldur would have broken his back from that blow. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #26 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur groaned as he slowly tried to pick himself up off of the floor. Thankfully he had managed to hold onto his Katana and didn't lose it in this dark abyss. He would have never forgiven himself for losing the blade. Nor did he think Tyger would. Though she would be happy if he at least came home to her. She wouldn't care about the sword as long as he was safe. But through the tumult of his short flying time, Baldur had lost the target on the <<Giant Bat>> and had no idea where it could be, so he got quiet and tried listening again, holding his breath to try and be as quiet as possible. A moment later a crashing sound erupted as the <<giant Bat>> attacked the wrong area. Baldur had been no where close to it. At least that confirms one of my suspicions. The bat can't see in here any better than I can. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #27 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur was getting frustrated with this bat. The other had been very nice and went down fairly quickly, but this one was being very difficult. "Alright you stupid flying rodent, come and get me!" Baldur shouted out loud, trying to draw it over to him. He wanted to try his lunge attack again, to try and get under it, but without even the targeter, that would be more difficult. He tried to quiet his mind, slow his breathing and listen. Really. Truely. Listen. But instead all he heard was the sound of the bat impacting him from the side and sending his body flying across the room. He landed in a crumpled mass. Baldur assumed that this was what being hit by a bus felt like. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #28 Share Posted February 24, 2015 "Alright, you got lucky that time! I wasn't ready for you, but I'm ready now, so come and get me!" This time, Baldur tried focusing his eyes on the direction he thought that the bat was coming from. Over and over again he told his eyes to focus on that spot as if he were looking at one of those old Magic Eye posters or a stereoscopic image of something, but nothing was coming up. Correction. Baldur was going up. Mostly that was because the bat came out of nowhere and flung him across the room again. "censored" Baldur said just before he crashed into the ground again. He was almost practiced at it this time. He just held onto his sword for dear life and leg the earth do what it would. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #29 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur decided to take a more active approach. Pushing himself off from the ground he began to run around the room, calling out to the bat and luring it to him with the sound of his voice. As he quickly moved around the center of the room, he heard the bat fly very close to him, but it missed and crashed into one of the columns of the room. "Stupid creature! Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #30 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur and the big dumb giant bat continued to play their little game of cat and mouse, each time the bat would crash into the wall, Baldur would try to listen and see if he could tell where it was coming from, and if he thought he was close enough to counter attack. "Come on! I bet your mom spread rabies! No! I bet she was a fruit bat!" He chuckled, even though he didn't feel it. It was that or be frustrated. "Your father smelled like pesticide!" Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #31 Share Posted February 24, 2015 As Baldur played cat and mouse around the room, he suddenly saw something he hadn't even thought of. The <<Giant Bat>> crashed into the small pillar of light where he had crawled down from. Now that the creature was illuminated, Baldur skidded to a halt. He locked onto the creature and dropped into a <<Charge>> He rocketed across the room, his Katana glowing with cyan light as he closed the distance and slashed through the mob. It's HP wasn't quite completely depleted and Baldur silently cursed. He had hoped that would end it. "Stupid rat." The <<Giant Bat>> had a maw the size of Baldur's head and it bit him with it. "Ow" Baldur said with a complete lack of emotion or feeling. It hurt, but not in the same way a real wound hurt, and Baldur was about ready to just give up this quest. It was on the second floor and not worth this kind of a headache. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #32 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Rather than give up, Baldur let his frustration give him strength and with a bit of luck, he whirled his katana in one hand, grabbing it in a reverse grip and then with both hands he drove the blade up into the head of the <<Giant Bat>> while it was still attached and biting his shoulder. With the sound of shattered glass, Baldur dropped to his knees in the small puddle of light. "Stupid bats." He murmured softly. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #33 Share Posted February 24, 2015 "Kid! It's safe! now get your lazy butt out here so I can go home!" He had know idea if that would work. "Gee, thank you mister!" A small child said as he ran up to him. "I bet my mama is real worried about me, I better get going!" The kid took to the rocks and climbed out like a trained monkey. Baldur just slammed his face into the ground of the cave. Never again.
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #34 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur decided that since he had spent so much time down here, he should at least have a look around. He took out his sword and began to shine the light around the room in a slow methodical way. Surely there was a chest or some materials down here. Perhaps an ore node or some bat guano that could be used to fuel a forge fire. [iD: 10917 LD: 12] No mats found.
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #35 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Unable to find anything close to the pool of light, Baldur decided that it would only be a further waste of his time to keep scouting around the cave like a blind man. Perhaps that Darkvision skill was worthwhile after all. Stupid encounter. Stupid quest. Stupid darkness. Where's a torch when you need one. Baldur let out a sigh and began the arduous task of climbing up the what seemed like one hundred feet to exit the cave. When he got to the top, he saw the woman and her kid waiting for them in a little too lifeless a fashion. He guessed they weren't like other NPCs who had fully fleshed personalities, and homes and jobs. "Oh, uh, BEHOLD MY LADY, I HAVE RESCUED THY PROGENY!"
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #36 Share Posted February 24, 2015 The Ancient Greek mother was kneeling on the ground, making her of height with her child. The child had that manufactured look that artists tended to give child models. Slightly too round heads, slightly too large eyes, slightly too fat cheeks. He looked more cherub than child. "Thank you so much brave hero! You saved my Maximus!" Baldur blinked when he heard the name. He couldn't tell if it reminded him of a Legionnaire or a horse. "Yes, well... WORRY NOT FAIR MAID! FOR THE BEASTS HAVE BEEN SLAYED BY BALDUR'S MIGHTY BLADE!" Mighty blade? Baldur was happy no one had seen him fight that last bat, or seen heard his words. If they had done both, they would have broken down laughing.
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #37 Share Posted February 24, 2015 "Please!" The woman continued in a pleading sort of manner. "It's dangerous out there in the world. Take this." She offered him a reward and Baldur accepted it. "Oh yea, I forgot about the reward." He just wanted to get out of here. This quest had sucked all of the fun he had once enjoyed out of the cow level. "Please ma'am, next time your child gets lost, just call I-X-I-I right away." With a sigh, he pivoted quickly on a heel and walked away from that mess, his ego terribly bruised. Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #38 Share Posted February 24, 2015 It was a long way back to the village at the top of the Mesa, and Baldur really hated that climb. It had gone by faster enough when he was running down to save the lady from the Kobold, but for now it was just soul crushingly long. He decided to try and take his mind off of it by visiting some of the nodes he had heard about in his latest edition of the floor guide provided by <<The Rat>> as she had taken to calling herself. She was the best informant in the game, and many people assumed she was a beta tester. He didn't really care for the stigma people attached to beta testers of the game. He found an out-cropping of rocks and began to search them, not finding anything he moved along. [iD: 10918 LD: 6]
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #39 Share Posted February 24, 2015 The next spot he would check would be at the foot of the mountain. It was actually behind a cutback in the trail, so most people missed it due to wanting to hurry to their destination once they finally reached the bottom of the slope. "Well, I missed it several times for the same reason, I guess I can't be too judgemental." He chuckled to himself as he walked through the bushes until they revealed several minerals that Tyger could use. "Excerrent!" [iD: 10919 LD: 17] +1 Mat
Baldur 0 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #40 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Baldur continued up the trail that would take him to the top of the mesa and to the main settlement of this floor, Urbus. It was a strange little town, but he did enjoy the view from the top. The walk from the bottom was just what was murder. I really hate you Kayaba. But thank you for not making that quest an escort one. He wasn't sure which he hated more, climbing this switch-back to get back to the town, escort quests, fighting giant bats in pitch black caves, or how much he really wanted to use a teleport crystal. Finally, when he got half way up the mountain, he took a well hidden goat trail behind some bushes. "No dice. Looks like someone beat me to it." He frowned and continued on his way.
