History

 

Thomas Smith is your stereotypical foreigner living in Japan working as an English teacher. He wakes up at 6:30 in the morning and has breakfast before heading to the train station to meet up with his students and catch the train to the town where he works. There was never any doubt to the other people as to who he was and what his occupation was in this small country town in Japan, for his red hair and pale skin stood out considerably from the sea of black haired students all wearing the same school uniform. When he finishes work at 17:00 he does the same in reverse before going for a run, eating dinner, playing a few games then going to sleep.

 

Japan does have a lot of really fun and interesting games, but it was always the online elements of games that interested him. From when he was a high school student through to the end of university he played MMORPGs. He would play with his brother and the guild they joined and become so immersed that they would often stay up all night hunting for items and exploring new areas before they even realized it was morning.

 

Playing MMOs changed the way that Thomas thought about games forever. Whilst at one time he would be happy playing through single player games placing stat points into whatever he felt was good at the time, MMOs taught him about the long run. He became an expert at min/maxing his characters in order to deal as much damage as possible. He would search the internet for clues about bosses and learn strategies to beat them to the point it was second nature. The romantic in him however still wished that he could fight bosses that had absolutely no information about them available. But in the age of the internet that was just not possible. Along with his brother he is an MMO veteran.

 

He hadn’t played MMOs since coming to Japan, many time zones away from his guild and his brother. Despite his old friends still likely staying up playing all night that was during work time for Thomas. And then when he got home from work, they were working. Despite not having his support group, this new game was too good to pass up. The world’s first VRMMORPG. Sword Art Online. For this reason Thomas found himself lying on his couch, the air conditioner on to escape the cold temperature with the nerve gear on his head. “Link Start,†he said aloud closing his eyes to chase the dreams and feelings he had experienced in his adolescence as “Tommo†once more.

 

Virtues:

 

Good Communicator: Living as an English teacher in Japan taught Tommo the value of communication. When he first arrived he spoke no Japanese but over time he managed to learn. Whilst teaching his own language he learned how to speak more slowly and clearly as well as how to say the same thing in many ways until his students understood. Sometimes however things would still come down to gestures and sign language which taught Tommo patience in order to give those he talked to time to articulate their thoughts. Although the fact this was not always extended back to him when he spoke Japanese was a little infuriating.

 

Cool Head, Hot Heart: Although Tommo has always been passionate about progression in MMOs, countless raids previous have taught him how to keep a cool head under pressure. This allows him to carefully analyze what is going on without being caught out of position. Whilst some of his old guild mates had a sixth sense about where they should be and what they should be doing, Tommo could more be described as a reader of the flow of battle than someone who was caught up in it.

 

Forward Thinking: Tommo has many goals that he strives to work towards and has good experience in putting together plans to achieve these goals no matter how illogical they may seem at the time. Ideas and plans which other people would laugh at, such as moving to Japan, he has no problem articulating a plan and pursuing his goals.

 

Flaws:

 

Self-Doubt: This is the first MMORPG that Tommo will be playing without his guild of old. Whereas at one time he could find belief in the strength and reliability of those around them he now finds himself without his stalwart allies. Tommo functions best as part of a team and there is no doubt that the prospect of taking to the field on his own unsettles him.

 

Soft-Hearted: Tommo cares about those around him sometimes to an extreme. This often leads him to getting mixed up in other peoples affairs and suffering personally for it. Tommo cares about some form of greater good, but sometimes good deeds can go punished.

 

Nocturnal: Tommo has had some of his best times playing at night with his friends but his love of the night comes at the cost of weariness during the day. He hates the sun and gets hot really easily. Unfortunately the majority of the populace do not feel the same way and are active during the day.
