 History

 

Born Twenty years ago as Michael Stevenson Jr., in the small town of Kendal in Cumbria England, Mike could never have guessed that in twenty short years his life would be turned upside down as he was thrown into a virtual death game. His early years were much the same as any: making his way through Primary and High School with good grades yet not the top of the class; playing out till dark with his friends and generally getting into as much mischief as he could. Mike has always had a fascination with his environment and how things interact with it and how they work: From how a bird flies to how a clock ticks; why trees change through the seasons and so on. The natural world was a mystery and a wonder he hoped to crack and to see how the inventions of man impacted upon the fragile ecosystem.
 
Mike was never really interested in video games or television growing up, much preferring to spend his time on long hikes through the beauty of the Lake district, swimming in the reservoirs, or playing badminton and tennis for the high school teams. At the age of 15, Mike was bought a Manga volume by a friend and quickly became hooked; his focus on the natural world began to diminish as he would spend hours reading under a tree, going through volume after volume, lost in worlds fantastical and often perfect, unaffected by the machines of modern day.  When he joined college at the age of sixteen, Mike was already an avid reader and collector of Manga and his interests spread into the Japanese culture as a whole. His studies throughout college continued his interest, learning more about their culture and language; he continued with his sports as a past time and also took up fencing, filling most of his spare time with activities when he wasn’t reading.
 
At 18, Mike was ready for university and got a place on a Japanese Studies course, he worked hard at his first year to enable him to get a place in Tokyo for his second year of the sandwich course. With only his bursary from the university to support him, he moved into a complex of small apartments, where he met the enigmatic Kine Zumi. Zumi had moved from a remote area of Japan to the big city just as he had moved from a relatively small town. Once in Tokyo, Mike’s life became much more hectic, studying at the University to complete his second year, he found a school to continue his Fencing practice and Badminton and of course he could continue his obsession with Manga. He also rekindled his old passion for Nature, seeing how the country he now lived in had both elegant gardens surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a massive city. He got a job in the same coffee shop as Zumi and discovered Nerve Gear and a new game Sword Art Online. Interested in a virtual reality which seemed to attempt to re-create the perfect fantasy land he dreamed of, Mike applied to be a beta tester, though missed out.
 
Down but not out, he threw himself back into his studies and extra shifts at the coffee shop, earning enough to buy a Nerve gear of his own and be ‘lucky’ enough to gain one of the first 10,000 copies of SAO on his Twentieth birthday. Barely able to contain his excitement, Mike blew off University that day and desperately waited for the install to complete. As soon as it had he plugged in, settling himself in for the most interesting experience of his life…

 

» VIRTUES

 

LOYAL - Whilst he has never been blessed with an abundance of friends, Mike has always been steadfastly loyal those he could count upon the exclusive number. Always the one to come to the aid of a friend in need, be it in support of a friend who is down, or to share in the blame when they got into trouble as youngsters, Mike would do anything for a true friend. This has bled through to Nel, acting as the rock to keep the group together in this trying time, always to be relied on. 
 
SELF-DISCIPLINE - With the high variety of extracurricular activities that Mike has taken on during his life, it has required a high amount of discipline to keep a balance between them and his school life, allowing . When in a sword fight, Nel keeps his emotions in check and his moves precise, every parry and attack planned to perfection with no wasted energy or motion. The only crack in his discipline is his desire to find out how things work or to learn something new, spending hours on it until the secret is cracked.
 
PERCEPTIVE - With his curious nature flourishing from a young age, and a thirst for knowledge of his environment, Mike has become adept at the art of always being alert. Scanning a new area in depth before proceeding; reading an opponent's body language to determine their course of action or how they will strike and so on. His perceptiveness means he is forever scanning for the next sword blow or even for the terrain around to avoid traps or pitfalls. 
 
» FLAWS
 

»  TACTLESS - Mike has always had the habit of speaking what he sees as the truth, and often forgets about a person's feelings when he does so. He does not do it to be malicious, he simply works out a situation based on the facts he knows and then gives a reply, which has caused more than a few issues with others when growing up. Mike feels being honest is the best policy when dealing with social problems.

 

» COMPETITIVE - Whether it comes to sports, Fencing or even video games in the Arcade with Katsurou and Zumi; Mike has always had a competitive streak; turning even the friendliest of scenarios into a heated contest of wills and ability. Once he found out the challenge of SAO, Mike was in his element, to defeat all the levels of Aincrad in a life or death situation is exhilarating, a true contest of his skills against that of the creator.

 

» OBSESSIVE (Knowledge/New Experiences) - Mike's drive to learn all he can about his environment, as well as the urge to learn all he can about a new and interesting topic borders on the obsessive: As a child he was obsessed over how nature interacts with humanity; moving on to Manga and the culture of a foreign country; to Fencing and other sports. When offered a chance to step into a Virtual World where everything had been rendered perfect, the desire drove him to the Nerve Gear system and the exciting possibilities of SAO.
