[SP - F2] The Great Gathering [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

"Alright... So far so good." Takao said aloud quietly to himself. His voice was soft enough to not echo off into nothingness. Each step he took was equally soft and careful, expressing extra caution as to not alert any unwanted attention. The path was eerily similar to the last one, though this one was a bit wider. He felt slightly more confident about fighting here, if only because it was larger by comparison, but his confidence wasn't significant enough to walk haphazardly ahead. Even more eerie than the blatant similarities, which Takao could simply write off as lazy geometry planning and level design, was the lack of... well, anything. The only noises he heard was the gentle hissing of wind over his own breathing and his feet crunching stone and dirt. It was unsettling, to say the least.

Ore Crab

Takao

"Yeah, I figured it was just about time."

Takao lunged forward and dropped into a roll as the Ore Crab's massive, heavy pincer came smashing down onto the ground where he'd been standing. The ledge cracked and splintered under the force of the crab, which was notably larger than the last two. Takao could only imagine that this meant it was stronger and harder to kill as well. His roll stopped abruptly when his foot slammed into the ground and his body twisted, turning to face the crab. His sword, glowing a pale green and emitting a low hum, shot forward suddenly. It cleaved into the exposed side of the crab, cutting into its natural armour and dealing damage regardless. Takao followed the slice through and spun on his heel to face the crab after coming to a stop behind it.

"Let's make this quick, yeah?"

Ore Crab

Takao

Takao took a step back as the crab closed in. It was stronger than the smaller crabs, that much was certain; the small crater that had formed from the impact of its pincer was proof enough. It was more durable too, his attacks took less of a percentage off its health bar. To top it all off, as if it didn't already have enough going for it, it was faster. Considerably so. The crab swung its pincer wide from left to right, apparently aiming to slam Takao into the sheer cliff wall to his left. He reacted quickly and leapt vertically into the air above the claw as it smashed into the wall. He placed his hand on the claw and vaulted over the monster, then spun on his heel. His blade clashed with the other pincer, and the two clashing objects sparked. Takao quickly discerned that the claws were armoured and an unlikely point to target for damage.

Ore Crab

Takao

The large crab made of rock and ore broke the stalemate quickly with its superior strength. Incredible strength, moderate durability and resistance to damage of the body, high resistance to damage on the claws, impressive speed. His assessment of the ore crab was continuous, without stop, every small action he noticed contributed to the growing bank of data and information in his head. It was just a force of habit by now, learning everything he could about his opponent even while fighting them. Sometimes it would give him an edge, other times it would distract him from the fight. But for this specific occasion, an edge was definitely earned. Takao took a hard step to the left and provoked the crab to attack accordingly. When it swung its pincer, he shifted his weight and spun on the heel of his left foot, spinning his body around the pincer. He swung upward vertically with his sword and cleaved through the weaker part of the limb that held the pincer, severing it with one strike. The amputated limb fell to the ground and erupted in a flash of glittery shards.

Ore Crab

Takao

As it should be expected, the Ore Crab was not pleased to have one of its limbs amputated. It swung its remaining pincer wildly, trying to smash into Takao, but he still proved to be too fast and evasive for the crab to hit with ease. He leapt over the claw and landed a mere half meter from where he'd jumped, his blade whipping forward. The Crab's own movements were quite quick and tricky, as it moved away from his slash just before it would've hit. Takao's blade harmlessly cleaved into the side of the cliff face, and he had little problem removing it from the stone. He glanced back at the Ore Crab and knitted his eyebrows close together. "Now c'mon. We can do this the easy way," He paused to [censored] into a stance, his sword poised and ready to strike. "O' tha' 'ard waeh."

Ore Crab

Takao

"Well, I guess that means you want the hard way." Takao dropped into a crouch and supported his weight with his left hand as the crabs swung high. It was aiming for his center of mass, which made for difficult and uncomfortable close narrow evasive maneuvers, but Takao was confident in his ability to keep himself from being damaged too badly. He swung his legs around while supporting his weight with his left hand and sprung back onto his feet, his blade ready to strike. The Ore Crab moved swiftly, determined to cling onto its life for as long as it could. He wondered if the monsters ever tried to retreat? He hadn't seen it yet, they all seemed absolutely hell bent on putting his head on a spike whenever he fought them. He wouldn't complain about that, though. At the very least, it provided him with some nice stabilization and predictability in fights.

Ore Crab

Takao

The Ore Crab swung and Takao evaded. Takao swung and the Ore Crab evaded. It was a curious and dangerous game of back and forth the two were playing, and surely a frustrating debacle to watch from afar. Takao, however, very rarely found a use for the word frustration. He didn't get frustrated or annoyed by these kinds of things, no. He got motivated. Each miss just meant that he would make the next swing harder, or faster, or more accurate. His determination never wavered, he was entirely set on emerging from this minor battle the sole victor. The crab was making a fair effort to hang on to its life despite being as a severe disadvantage in the way of health.

"Man, you're a stubborn one, aren'tcha?"

Ore Crab

Takao

Having only one means of attack narrowed the patterns the Ore Crab had down significantly. Its movements became very predictable, and if no outside force influenced him, Takao was sure he could evade it all day. But that wouldn't be necessary, because the fight was going down to an end soon enough. The Crab swung down onto him, though it would be more accurate to say that it tried to. Takao raised his sword and turned the flat of the blade to catch the incoming pincer. He braced the opposite end of the blade with his hand, and stopped the swing. A smirk grew into a smile as he batted the pincer away and thrust his blade forward in a sudden and quick motion. It stabbed deep into the Crab and depleted a large chunk of its health, teetering on the edge of death. This would be over soon. "Sh, sh..." Takao said as he pulled the blade out of the crab. "No tears now. Only dreams."

Ore Crab

Takao

The crab was, understandably, not happy about having a blade plunge through it. Its unhappiness with that fact was perhaps rivaled by how that attack had nearly depleted it of all its health. It swung its claw, but Takao's blade in the crab locked the limb in place. It struggled and trashed until the blade dealt the remaining damage over time. The final sliver of health was depleted, and the ore crab erupted into flashy shards, until it finally disappeared into nothingness. When everything was clear, Takao sheathed his sword on his back and read the menu. Experience. A crafting material. Nothing new, but nothing unappreciated. He smiled and swiped it away, then turned to continue on his search for even more crafting materials.

The narrow path eventually merged into another flat mountain top after a bit of a steep climb. He'd have to work on athletics next, because climbing the sheer rock face was a difficult task even with his acrobatic abilities. He hoisted himself up onto the mountain's summit and glanced around. It looked rather far off from where normal players would wander, so he imagined the abundance of crafting materials would be plentiful. From his initial glance, this did not seem to be the case. A few tall evergreen trees sat on the north side in a patch of grass and dead needles, while the majority of the environment was made up of mountainous, rocky terrain. "Guess I'll be gettin' my get my hands dirty."

This particular part of the mountain didn't seem to be very bountiful after all. With no resources in sight, he had opted to walking along the edge of the cliff, still in search. He had better luck killing the crabs, but he was more interested in taking a break from fighting at the moment. His green eyes glanced over the sky, he was high enough in the mountains that the clouds felt just barely out of reach. The deep blue was turning to shades of orange and purple as the day went on, meaning he would have to head back soon. He was still determined to find as many resources as he could before night fell, however, so he pressed on in search of more.

"Man, this place is deaaaaaad!" He spoke loudly and chuckled when his voice echoed off the mountain. He could imagine some player like himself adventuring nearby, suddenly getting freaked out by the loud voice echoing around. With little else to do and no materials to harvest in sight, he figured it would be a fine time to plan out the following day. Takao still needed better equipment, so he'd need to visit Lessa's shop first. That was partially why he was so dedicated to gathering materials now, so that she would have plenty of chances to perfect his weapon. It was something he'd be relying on with his life after all, so it needed to be the best he could get, especially if his plans to go to the front lines were to come to fruition.

"Aha, finally! I knew this floor wasn't empty!" Takao came to a sliding stop beside a rocky outcrop with chunks of ore spilling off the sides. It was about time he found something! He placed his hand on the resource and gathered everything it had to offer, which totaled to be about two materials worth. He stood up and brushed off his pant legs, his eyes immediately scanning the area for any more. It was rather late in the day, so he wouldn't doubt the potential that the resources had been depleted by more attentive players who had arrived earlier than he. At the very least, he could just go fight more of those strange ore crabs, but the idea of more fighting didn't sit high on his priority list.

* Treasure Chest Attempt *

At the northern end of the mountain's summit was a large cliff face. He estimated it to be about twenty to twenty five meters tall, though it was difficult to tell. At the base of the cliff was a cave opening, though it was impossible to see very far inside due to the pitch black darkness. Still, Takao's curiousity got the better of him, as it normally did. He swallowed and pulled his sword from the scabbard on his back, gripping the virtual leather-wrapped handle tightly. His first steps into the cave were cautious, checking to see if he had stable footing before moving on. He barely made it ten meters inside before a slight glimmer of metal caught his eye. He approached the trunk carefully and examined it, his eyes slowly widened. "Whoa... no way. A treasure chest." The thought that it might be a mimic, which these mountains seemed terribly fond of, crossed his mind. A few pokes with the end of his sword rested his worries, so he sheathed his sword and knelt down in front of the chest.

Luck favoured Takao as he opened the chest. Whatever trap had been laying in wait to be triggered by an unsuspecting adventurer had failed, leaving the entirety of the treasures for him to take. As he opened the chest, a menu prompt appeared in his face. The system was notifying him of the loot he'd acquired. It wasn't anything terribly impressive. 100 col and 2 crafting materials. Nothing to write home about, but definitely worth the detour. He collected the items and stood, watching the chest disperse into colourful, crystalline shards. He turned and left the cave the way he came, a smile on his face.

After leaving the cave, Takao returned to the search for crafting materials. This excursion had been plenty bountiful so far, but he was sure that he could always use more. After all, he had made the interesting decision to promise materials to other people. It likely would have been beneficial to keep them for himself until he decided on a profession, but that wasn't the sort of person he was. Besides, he enjoyed helping others so much more than he would ever imagine he would enjoy a profession. Takao started moving back toward the section of cliff he'd climbed to find this area. He began his descent and landed with a soft thud on the narrow pathway below. His eyes followed the path in the direction he'd originally come from and he exhaled a sigh. "There's totally going to be more of 'em. Calling it now."

The walk back to the town of Urbus was a long one, especially with every detour Takao took up noticing something of interest. The narrow, one-way path with a vertical cliff face on one side and a sheer drop without a bottom in sight made it rather easy to stay on track, however. Along the way, he'd been finding sources of metal that spawned during his absence. He was careful about each ore deposit that he approached, doing so with sword in hand and keeping ample space between the two of them until it was certain they weren't going to spring to life and have a go at him. He'd noticed his health had been restoring over time, albeit slowly, and that he'd returned to his maximum. The quest with Lessa had given an interesting skill that was definitely a necessity.

The outskirts of the town slowly drew closer with each heavy step he took. The long day of gathering materials and fighting monsters had taken its toll on him. Night had just barely began to set over the floor as Takao left the mountainous part of the region, On the way back, he'd found one last deposit of ore that he collected hastily. He'd gotten quite the haul in a single day, and even though he was without a profession, he had a good feeling that they would come in useful regardless. But right now, he was in desperate need of some well deserved rest.
