[SP - F1] «Earning a Living» [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

After hopping the fence, the real search for the vegetables began. The fields were massive and vast, and the crops planted where were of great variety. The farmhouse had looked small from the bottom of the hill, but upon jumping the fence, he'd learned just how large it actually was. He was going to have a difficult time finding one or two single ingredients among the plethora of crops, but he gave it a try anyways. The first fields he waded through were filled with sheafs of wheat, tied and bundled, ready to be harvested.

Passing through the fields of wheat proved to be a difficult and lengthy excursion. The sheafs turned to normal stalks about waist high, and navigation through the fields required a certain finesse and skillful footwork, lest he risk tripping and falling. The end of the wheat field was near, but still much too far. What he was looking for had little to no chance to be within this particular section of the field, unless the designers had little to no sense of logic - and they surely did. He pushed the sheafs and stalks of wheat aside as he waded through the field, trying to get to the other side.

The end of the wheat field was finally within his sights. He pushed through the last of the crops and emerged on the other side, his clothes covered in small debris from the plants he'd waded through. He hopped the second fence and regarded his surroundings with a careful, observant eye. This section of the farm had various kinds of vegetables planted, that much he could tell. He just needed to locate the very specific few that remained on his list. One carrot, one onion. Simple enough.

Takao recognized the head of a carrot growing almost immediately. Its slight orange colour contrasted greatly from the dark brown dirt, even if only a small bit was visible. He grasped it firmly and pulled the root free from the ground, examining the quality of the vegetable before stowing it away within the safety of his inventory. He stood and brushed his hands off, green eyes scanning the fields vigilantly. Only one ingredient remained, and then he could go back to the town and finish the quest up. He hoped that this wasn't just part one of a multiple part quest.

Takao located the last ingredient, the remaining one of two onions that he needed to complete the quest. He plucked it from the ground and brushed away the dirt and debris, cleaning the vegetable before storing it in his inventory. Two slabs of red meat, two carrots, and two onions were all the quest asked for, so he stood and began to make his way back to the town. He'd realized now, as he stood atop the hill, how far he'd actually walked. The large seven mile wide city in the distance looked minuscule and tiny on the horizon. A defeated sigh escaped as he began to walk, knowing full well that standing around and whining about the distance wouldn't get him there any faster.

Takao estimated about an hour to have passed since he'd first taken the quest. Now, back in the city limits, he could relax with the knowledge that the quest was nearly over. He was tired and in need of some well deserved rest, even if he had only been out for a short while. The quest had helped take his mind off things, and for that, he was greatly appreciative. He stood outside the same building he'd entered earlier in the morning and pushed open the heavy oak doors. It looked less busy than it had earlier, likely the fact that the breakfast rush had long since passed. He approached the counter again and regarded the NPC with a tired smile.

« Welcome back, player! Did you manage to find everything I asked you to collect? »

Takao's response was a simple nod. The NPC seemed to recognize the subtle gesture and clapped her hands together excitedly.

« Excellent! Follow me, and I'll show you the basics of cooking! »

The explanations she gave him after leading him into the back room were lengthy. She'd given him some basic tools to help him on his way, though they were low quality and definitely meant for a beginner, such as him. She'd taught him how to prepare the small ingredient that acted as a precursor to more advanced meals, and by luck he'd succeeded in the creation. It wasn't anything worth keeping, so he'd thrown it away after the fact. It would likely have decayed by the time he managed to level up his profession enough to use it anyways. With the quest completed and the new profession learned, Takao opted to head back to his room at the nearby Inn for some well deserved rest.
