[SP - F5] «Feeding the Enemy» [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

Takao slowly made his way up to the summit of a large sand dune and glanced over the vast expanse of desert that laid out before him. He rubbed his face vigorously before setting his attention onto the settlement of Armadillo in the distance, which had drawn much closer to him than he had initially realized. He glanced over his shoulder to where he'd just fought the bandit, and then returned his attention to the city before sliding down the opposite side of the sand dune and starting off for the settlement.

After passing through the gates of Armadillo, Takao made his way to the teleport gate. The fight that he had originally been rather stoked for had ended up putting him in a terribly sour mood, so he decided he'd spend a bit of time back in his shop to "cool" off, both metaphorically and literally. He uttered the floor's number and settlement's name, Delilah Village, before being surrounded by light and whisked off to his favourite floor for some greatly needed respite.

Takao closed the door of his restaurant with a bit more force than he'd been intending to as he entered. The pulled the sword and scabbard off his back and set it on the kitchen counter as he passed through it on the way to the upstairs residential portion of the building. As he reached the top of the stairs, he was greeted with the sight of his "living room" of sorts. He immediately wandered over to the couch while scrolling through his inventory, removing various articles of clothing through the menu until he was only left in the black shirt he wore under his armour, his trousers, and his boots. He plopped down on the couch and glanced across the circular table to the crackling fire contained within the stone fireplace. He covered his face with his arm and huffed out a long, exhausted sigh. "Well... Whatever. There's no time limit on the quest, I'll just pick it up tomorrow." He grumbled in an uncharacteristic monotone as his head shifted and returned to watching the fire.

The next morning, Takao had awoken early and decided to return to his daily routine that he had begun to miss. He left for the eight floor and spent most of the morning grinding away on the monsters there without much of an issue. His attitude had only slightly improved, yet it was still substantially better than the day prior. After visiting a shop on the first floor and buying some more cheap food items, on top of a few that he made himself last evening in advance, Takao finally decided to return to the fifth floor. He appeared through the teleport gate in the settlement of Armadillo and didn't linger in the town for very long at all. He passed through the gates and out into the wilderness, eager to give the quest another shot.

* Familiar Attempt *

Takao exhaled a long, exhausted breath as he settled down on a rock. He held his head in his hands as he stared out over the desert with an uninterested expression. An hour had passed since he arrived on the fifth floor in search for a familiar. By some miraculous amount of optimism, he managed to drag himself across the sand dunes, holding out some level of hope in spite of his several failures. Even so, he hadn't managed to find a single monster worth taming. Most of them only showed an interest in eating him, or bludgeoning him, or otherwise seeing his demise in some way. Takao opened his menu and navigated through the options until he arrived at his inventory. He selected one of the sandwiches he bought earlier in the day from the third floor restaurant he frequented and watched it materialize in his hands. "Ah well... I guess it's not that important for me to get a familiar. Maybe I'll try again some other day."

He felt a hot breath on his neck and literally jumped off the rock while twisting his body. As he turned, he saw a red reptilian monster standing on the rock behind where he'd been sitting. It wasn't intimidating in the slightest, which made him feel a bit foolish at his over reaction. He huffed out a sigh and slowly climbed back to his feet, sandwich still in hand, and sat back down on the rock.

"Well, since you're here, you might as well humour me." He said to the monster. Takao offered the sandwich out to it halfheartedly, though he didn't pay attention to the monster. He knew what was coming, so he just glanced off into the desert and worked on opening his menu to replace the sandwich he would inevitably lose.

Takao was surprised, however, to feel the sandwich not leave his hands. He glanced over at the monster and stared wide-eyed at the small reptile as it took a bite from the sandwich. "Whoa." He mumbled, offering the rest of the food to the monster who happily accepted it. "No way! You're just messin' with me, right?"

The monster hopped up onto his back and scurried up onto his head. Takao glanced up at the monster and smiled brightly. "Dude! Sweet!"
