[F1-SP] «Earning A Living» Glitzy Beginnings

Recommended Posts

The moment Rawk had heard of the quest, he was struck with a fascinating idea, albeit a tad childish. After a fair bit of thought into the subject (as he had plenty of that in his "incubation period") he soon came to believe that the zany idea might just work, not only that, but the customization would allow for it. A tailor shop, "Glitz and Glory", he would call it, home to all the outlandishly colored and eccentric gear one could find. The reason behind the name, and the finer details of the goods would be obvious if one knew the reason behind the username. By the time Rawk actually found his way to the quest, he felt practically obligated to enact his plan. Even if it did fail, at least he would be able to make his own gear, which was always a plus. Naturally, when he learned that the pleasant NPC that gave him his leggings was one of the possible quest givers for Earning a Living, he made his way straight to her shop. Obviously, she no longer remembered him, but she was a comforting sight none-the-less. Pushing through the wooden doors, he returned her welcoming smile with one of his own. "Hello newcomer! How can I help you?!" she was in the middle of sorting through some wares, and had stopped to greet Rawk. A young boy clung to her dress, glaring up at him protectively. Rawk didn't recall seeing the kid last time he was here, and found his silent stare a tad unnerving. He noticed that sometime before arriving here, he had leveled up. Not knowing when exactly the level-up had occurred, Rawk shrugged it off and returned to the present events.

Finding himself momentarily distracted by the kid's stare, he snapped out of his trance and returned his attentions to the shopkeeper, who didn't seem to care about his "moment". "Oh, yeah, I came here wondering if you could teach me the Tailor profession? I heard you're willing and capable," he shoved his hands into his pockets due to the lack of anything to do with them. The woman nodded and looked down to what was presumably her son, whose face darkened to a grimace almost the moment he heard the inquiry. The shopkeeper was either extremely oblivious, or concerningly apathetic, as she gave the boy one of the biggest smiles she had, ignoring his obvious distaste in these excursions, "I'm afraid that I'm currently busy, but I'm sure John will be able to help you, it won't be that dangerous, and you will be capable of protecting him, aren't you?" "John" twitched at this. If Rawk was already aware of the infamously annoying "Escort" missions, then he might've been dissuaded from progressing, but he wasn't. The company of another was actually a refreshing idea, NPC or not, "Oh, yes, Floor 1 enemies shouldn't be that big of a problem! Besides, they aren't that frequent from what I hear.....unless you're trying to find them." John raised a brow at this, his scrawny appearance matching up with his tone, " "From what I hear?"...." John's skepticism was short lived in the conversation, as the Shopkeeper was quick to send them off once everything was in accord with her overbearing cheer, "Perfect! John, take the young dear to the Forest for some silk, it should be maleable enough for a novice, stick close to the good sir!" John begrudgingly nodded, shoving off from the shopkeeper. If he was a real person, he would've questioned the reasoning behind entrusting a child to a stranger. The Shopkeeper waved a good bye, leaving the two with a "Take care!" before returning to her work. John marched off past Rawk with a simple, "Follow me" before practically pushing through the door and taking a sharp right; Rawk was quick to follow.

John's walking pace was brisk, weaving in and out of the passing figures with ease, almost leaving Rawk in his dust. The sights filed by, familiar turning to unfamiliar as the duo left the city and ventured out onto the beaten road. It was there, away from the noise, that John briefed Rawk on what lay ahead of them. "We'll-you'll be gathering silk from the Silkworms in the forest, it's where most of the craftsmen go if they want materials due to it being the closest to the city. The Silkworms are larger than usual, and so to is their silk, but they're relatively harmless, and leave plenty of silk behind for us to take. I'd be more worried about the wolves, and they only travel in packs at night. We might bump into one or two wolves along the way, but nothing you can't handle......I hope...either way, I have a teleportation crystal, so don't worry about me." Rawk merely nodded and walked along, somewhat surprised at the maturity with which John carried, or perhaps it was imitation, Rawk wasn't in a position to decide between the two. They passed a few other parties with nothing more than a greeting or so, and soon, they had made it to the forest. John simply instructed Rawk to lead the way, and do what seemed natural to him; John stated he was simply there to facilitate things. Thus, the two of them stepped into the green, and let the din of the forest overwhelm their senses.

The crunch of unkempt forest against their boots soon added to the din, the two venturing off the path to get a better shot at finding the worms. Rawk took the lead, using his spear as a walking stick, and a tool to slice away at the greenery. It proved to be a useful tool, and many a thorny vine had been cleared from their path thanks to it. John took in the sights silently, and didn't say much at all, nor show any sign of interest in anything, not that Rawk minded. Rawk used the time spent trekking to think about how deeply the AI in Sao went, as to him, the NPC's seemed real enough, and even that was intriguing. The two passed by the carcass of a fallen tree, and nothing more of note.

A wave of cicada cries washed over the forest, the first of many tides. John looked up towards the tree-top, his brow flicking up, "Hmm, they're early." The cheer of insects, however, did not bolster Rawk's efforts, and all he got was a "whole lot of nothing". A basic battle axe had been left within a cleavage chopped into a tree, it could be assumed that the axe was the tool used for the deed, and whomever had left it had used it as some form of waypoint. John made a silent note of the sight, examining it closely out of curiosity. Rawk used the moment as an opportunity to take a break, sipping his water calm. The calm of the forest was comforting at best, especially in the presence of company; it was less terrifying than travel in solitude, even if it was an NPC with him.

Watching as the unit count display for his flask went down by one point, Rawk pocketed the leather thing. Deciding to look back at John, he found the boy was busying himself with climbing the tree where the axe  was embedded. This proved as quite the surprise to Rawk, who hadn't heard even a peep from the boy before. Picking up his spear from its prop against a tree, he walked up to the axe, propping the point of his spear against the dirt and leaning against it, looking up to John, "What're you up to? I thought we were looking for silk......unless it's up there?" Rawk gave a closer look to the tree, though, he couldn't see any white for the life of him. "I'm not, wouldn't even tell you if there was silk up here..." John's feet dangled in the air for a moment before the respective arse found a proper seat on a sturdy branch, he held a tight countenance, one that Rawk was easily able to pick up on, and attribute to John's change of mood. Tightening his own grip on the spear, he slowly rose to a battle ready position, ".........Whats wrong?" He asked in a considerably quieter voice. ".....I think a wolf's coming, I can hear it......." John eyed their surroundings, "Stay spry....it'll be here soon.....I doubt it knows we're here, it would've been here already if that was the case." Rawk turned towards the direction that he could only assume the wolf was approaching, pointing the tip of his spear towards it. "First fight outside the training halls, hmm?" John may be a puppet, but he was a perceptive one for certain. Rawk could hear a few branches cracking on a beat, the sound of footsteps; he nodded slowly. The cracking slowed to a halt, and was soon replaced with a snarl. "Good luck" John muttered, thumbing his crystal from inside his pocket.

The snarl slowly acclimated into coarse bark, and like a flash, the wolf responsible for it leaped out of the bush and towards it's target, Rawk, fangs bared. Rawk stood firm out of either the understanding of how important a strong formation is, or the lack of a reaction due to how fast the wolf attacked. Either way, it worked out to his advantage, his spear scratched the edge of the wolf's open snout as it made its savage charge. The blade left a gash down it's cheek, and in return, the wolf knocked Rawk aside before crashing directly into the axe tree, underneath the axe. This, naturally, rustled the tree, and would've shook John out if he didn't have a firm perch; he looked down at the wolf with a sneer. Rawk managed to keep a grip on his spear as he fell, and rebounded from the ground rather quickly. Seeing as the wolf was still dazed from its crash, Rawk hopped into a trust aimed at the wolf's exposed hide, hoping the momentum would be enough to close the distance. Alas, the thing had sense enough to stumble out of the way, and Rawk's blade met with hard bark. Fortunately, the spear was made of solid stuff, and didn't crack, thus allowing Rawk to regain his bearings, just as the wolf had done shortly thereafter. The wolf retired to circling Rawk, realizing the error of it's hasty ways, leaving Rawk to simply rotate as so that his spear was always pointed towards it.

The wolf saw an opening and wasted no time in taking advantage of it, suddenly halting in its slow rotation to the left and springing towards Rawk's right leg. Rawk was a tad sluggish on his reaction due to his inexperience, and before he knew it, the wolf had sunk its teeth down into his leg. John's eye's lit up at this, the rising tension nabbing at some suppressed enjoyment of spectation. Biting his teeth down hard and letting out his equivalent of a growl, Rawk aimed the spear at the wolf's back and thrusted downwards, sword & pedestal style. The wolf tried to dodge, but had already committed far too hard to avoid the spear's blade, receiving a gash along its side for its effort. Hopping back to analyze the damage it had down, it growled ferociously in hopes of intimidating Rawk. Unphased by its growls, Rawk kept a steady aim on the wolf once again, he wouldn't let that error happen again. The soothing sensation of a faint, but comforting heal washed over him, he thanked the fact that he invested in BH. The fight wasn't over yet, but the cards seemed to be stacked in his favor.

The wolf was playing it safe, yes, but it did so in a forced manner, as it innately wished to rip Rawk to shreds. Any restraint it expressed was merely in pursuit of that goal, but the beast soon realized that a conservative style wouldn't carry it to victory in this situation, Rawk had more HP. This called for desperate action, lest it wanted to end up on the receiving end of a sharp stick. Thinking that using the same trick twice would work merely due to how stupid it seemed, it went through with the plan; Rawk wasn't that stupid, however. The wolf tried the same trick, but in reverse, and unlike before, Rawk's eye was quick enough to catch it; batting the charge aside with a horizontal swing. Rawk watched with satisfaction as the edge of his spear smashed against the the wolf's already abused snout, the unfortunate thing skidding off towards the bushes. It was in the red, but Rawk knew how quickly things could turn for him, so no stress was shoved off his back. Holding his spear at the ready, he closed the distance between him and the wolf whilst the thing struggled the get up, effectively closing the space it had to move by the time it had fully gotten up.

The wolf was pushed into a corner, physically and metaphorically, if it leaped into the bush to try and reposition, the spear would nick it and leave it open to any form of counter attack. Attacking up front would simply result in death, and would require extreme luck to pull off, and there wasn't other possible option. It needed to think fast, no, it needed to react. Rawk, despite how calmly he seemed to have been taking the whole situation, was simply holding back all his excitement, a time learned lesson. It helped him think more clearly, emptied up his mind, so to speak, and it was probably the main reason things were going well for him thus far. Deciding to play the wolf's own trick on it, he feinted a strike to the wolf's right, to which it responded with a leap at his left leg. Much to the wolf's dismay, however, a horizontal slash was soon to meet its neck, knocking it a few feet away from Rawk. Its hp dipped into the red, and it felt it's body failing it. Finally, Rawk began to feel some relief, there was no way he could lose, and if he did, it would require some ludicrous luck on the wolf's side. Even John could sense the fight's end, and he probably couldn't even see the health bars; Rawk never bothered to check if they could.

This is it, the final stand, the wolf knows its going to die, Rawk knows its going to die, everyone knows, it's only a mater of time, and seconds remain. So in one last act of desperation, the wolf blindly leaped forward as it had done before, if only to remove one tick off Rawk's HP bar. Rawk thrusts into the wolf's momentum to deal the finishing blow, but misses due to an unsteady hand, grazing the wolf, not enough to kill. It barrels into Rawk, knocking aside his spear and sending him to the ground with it on top of him. Rawk was momentarily stunned, so the wolf made to push the advantage. Rushing to get the finishing bit down on Rawk's now exposed neck, the wolf was stopped when Rawk gripped the thing by its side and flung to his left with a uncharacteristic moment of strength, probably wrought on by mechanics. The wolf was pulled off with ease, and coincidentally, its trajectory sent it flying directly towards the axe, and not under it this time. The exposed blade of the axe combined with the wolf's momentum cleaved it in two, ending it rightly. The pixels dissipated, flowing up into John's face, which had been smirking naught but a moment ago. Treating the pixels like flies, he swatted at them for the brief moment that they cluttered his view. Rawk could've sworn he heard something along the lines of "Damn mana!" muttered by John.

Rawk heard the "ding" that he would soon associate with leveling up shortly thereafter, his max HP going up a notch along with his ego. His first victory, certainly a milestone. Looking to the corpse of the wolf, he found a small glistening spark in it's place. "It's yours, you earned it," John swung he feet about, considerably more comfortable in his seat. "Yeah, I guess so, not half bad, hmm?" Rawk waited for a response, but got none; John kicked off from his seat, landing next to the axe which the item drop rested atop. Sighing, Rawk made his way to the loot bag and clicked it, only to receive 1 good quality Leather Armor, something which expedited the process of deciding what skill he would invest in next. Pocketing the thing, he looked up  to the boy, "Where to next?"

"Anywhere, I suppose, still need the silk."

"Where the wolf came from?"

"Good as any place. Just as likely to for there to be wolves anywhere."

With a nod, the two made way towards where the wolf came from, leaving the scene of the axe with only a few steps through the bush. Once again, their luck in finding Silk was considerably horrid; it seemed that the worms were capable of premonition, and hell bent of weaving their paths to ensure the two never came across them or their silk. After a fair bit of silence, John idly asked, "You people, you always ask me what I see when the sparks appear, why is that?" to which Rawk replied, " "You people"? What's the distinction?" John shrugged, "Adventures, all types of them too; this isn't the first time I've guided someone like this." Rawk chuckled, he was beginning to think John had grown self aware, that notion was beyond him, "Oh, no reason, probably something to do with how people perceive mana differently." John would've caught out Rawk's improv were it not for how relived he seemed, even when saying the fib.

"How much silk do we have to find? This seems like it might take forever." Rawk knew that it would take some time before they would come across some silk, but he felt as there would be at least some trace of the worms. John shrugged in his usual manner, sending a stray glance towards a berry bush, "Once we find one, it should get easier; these ones tend to stick in clusters; move as a pack to intimidate potential predators, but they're harmless if you just go for their silk" John picked up a fallen branch, swishing it in the air mindlessly. John's words left Rawk wondering just what kind of silkworms John was referring to, as these worms sounded quite queer to him. That is not to say that he he hadn't experienced Fantasy settings before, and of a wide variety, but rather, that experiencing was different from observing.

The two reached a forest clearing, sizable, grassy, and bland; and with beads of silk hanging off the trees on the other end. Opting to circle about the clearing rather than cut through out of fear of being seen by those with malicious intent, the duo made their way about the large patch. While the sky was clear when they entered the forest, it was now a blanket of cloud, and dense cloud at that; John made note of how rain would soon come, leaving Rawk to realize his tunic might just be ruined by the adventure. Regardless, they persevered on, and for their effort, the silk drew near,  and was in a approachable distance, or at least, the trees they hanged off were. The duo had cut through into a deeper portion of the forest by this point, the trees growing taller and the greenery appropriately denser as they went. The silk hanged off treetops which John didn't feel comfortable climbing and Rawk certainly couldn't reach. A trail was a trail, however, and they were on the right track, that alone motivated Rawk to continue on.

What was once thin traces of silk soon grew to be thicker and thicker beads, certainly enough to satisfy the quest, save for the fact that it was out of reach. John took the time to tell Rawk more about the silk they were after, mainly, the ecosystem that had sprung up about it, as a multitude of species stood to gain from it, each in unique ways; this was done on the insistence of Rawk combined with John's own boredom. Throughout the lesson, Rawk couldn't help but wonder just how much time and energy had been invested in the game's creation, as Rawk could easily imagine multiple episodes of some discovery channel show being dedicated to this forest alone. It was unique in that sense, the only forest to house these worms, as far as the NPC's were aware.

Somewhere along the lines of silk, in a considerable thick thread, a few hammocks had been stretched into the silk. They appeared to be unoccupied, but John had already mentioned the creatures responsible for them, so no owner needed to be found. A species of squirrels whom made their home within the threads, using broken nuts and twigs to create a chassis that their flighty predators couldn't pierce; the silk was sticky enough for the pieces to stick properly, assuming the squirrels built a good enough chassis. The two crossed one of the failed hammocks not too far away from the first group. The first telltale sign was a snapped line between two tree's with a patch of sky in between their leaves, and using that as a guide, they were able to locate the previous home of the unfortunate squirrel. It's "armor" appeared to be severely damaged, spots of crusted blood found within the shell, a reminder of what carelessness earned you. It took the two some time to peel off the armor, but when they did, Rawk official gained his first unit of Silk, a worthy haul considering the effort they invested into the search. "This is enough to craft your first item, but you might want to get more Silk before leaving, with you being a novice and all," John wiped away the bits and pieces off his hand as he spoke, looking up at the cloudy sky, which had darkened considerably, "At the same time, we might want to find the colony responsible for this silk, it's going to rain soon, and hard. We can avoid getting wet if we use the silkworm's den as shelter, plus we can spend the time to fish out silk....well, you do, I just watch." John had replaced the stick with a rusty knife he had nearly stepped on a few paces back, picking up the thing from the tree stump he had stabbed it into before getting to work. Rawk nodded, giving the pile of scrap pieces they left behind one last look before rising from his seat, continuing down the path, "Sounds like a plan!"

The two of them tried to keep to the line of threads as best as they could, however, the forest hampered their progress, and was an overall annoyance due to it's "wildness". The sounds of drizzle washed over the forest far before the two arrived at the den, prompting them to pick up the pace. The cries of cicadas finally died down, and slowly, the rain increased in intensity. The two of them hopped from tree base to tree base to avoid getting wet, progressing towards the den at an slower pace than before. Drops of water clung to the silk; Rawk couldn't help but notice that the rain had seemingly lured worm-like creatures, just as small as their relatives, out from within the threads. John hadn't touched upon these "critters", and even after noticing Rawk's curiosity, the boy didn't bother to explain what they were.

The silk thread started connecting to multiple other threads of the same size, all of them headed in one direction, presumably towards the den, or, the two hoped so. Their hopes were confirmed true by the traces of silkworm poop that John pointed out, the increasing quantity as they followed the threads a clear indicator of the den's close proximity. Even with the rain, the two noticed a rotting smell, clearly from nearby, neither said a word of it.

It grew to the point where the smell was near unbearable, and the two of them could've sworn that it's source was merely inches away, at best. They tried to divert their paths to follow other threads, which should've lead them away from the sordid smell, but it seemed to follow them wherever they went. Even when they strayed from the threads all-together, simply heading in the direction of the den, the smell was pervasive. Not even John couldn't find the source of the smell, a fact which bothered him to no end. Rawk hypothesized that the smell came from the silk itself, but upon taking a whiff of the silk he'd gathered earlier, that suspicion was quickly dispelled. Even the rain seemed intent on dampening their moods, breaking through the canopy to batter the two down. Any monsters which normally would've attacked them by now were wise enough to take shelter, as they couldn't be bothered with heavy rain.

As if a gift from the heavens itself, the two came across a considerably large mound of silk resting within the previously inhabited dig-out of some human-sized creature. This dig-out was positioned inbetween two rather large roots and the towering tree which birthed them. The tree itself was home to not only lines of silk, but webs of it. Atop each web was it's own mound of silk, and whilst Rawk would've been intimidated by the sight, he had already learned that the Silkworms were behind the "real estate" from John's lesson. The nets acted as harnesses to the mounds, which were in reality, cocoons of the silkworms. It was a sign that the den was incredibly close, as the worms wouldn't stray far from home without reason. The net once belonging to the fallen mound had a gaping hole straight down its middle, cut threads stretching out as they trailed back down to the mound, which had partially rolled on it's back upon entry. Due to the copious amounts of silk these silkworms produced, one could easily harvest a decent supply from even one cocoon, even with the utmost respect for the worm's life.

Naturally, Rawk wanted to be rid of the forest as soon as he could, and if the fastest way to do that was the fallen cocoon, then so be it. John found himself a perch atop one of the thicker roots, dangling his feet over Rawk's head as he skidded down into the hole. Rain water had flooded about an inch of the dig-out; thankfully, the rate at which it flooded, Rawk would have enough time to loot what he needed; however, silk was the last thing he was worried about when he hopped into the dig out. Almost immediately, he was hit with a condensed version of the horrible stench, and it seemed that it was coming off the cocoon itself. Reeling back in disgust, Rawk looked back up to John's feet, the only part of him visible from down where he was, "Ehrm, John? I think the smell is coming from the Cocoon's.......why is that?" John's feet stopped dangling, resting against the frame of the root, "Oh?.................Probably an epidemic, try poking it with that spear of yours, tell me what you feel, but don't press in too hard." Rawk looked back at the cocoon, retrieving his spear from its holster. Thanks to the cocoon having rolled to the back edge of the dig-out, Rawk was able to hold his spear semi-properly. Aiming it at the cocoon's center of mass, he prepared to press forward, "Can't be that bad of an idea..."

Rawk practically felt the mushy silk envelope the tip of the spear, sending shivers up his spine. Besides the initial resistance, Rock felt as if there was nothing within the cocoon, or, it's weight was considerably lighter than what he suspected it should be. Not only that, but Rock felt as if there was another, more subtle difference with the silk of the mound, when comparing it to the unit of silk he'd already gathered. Whilst he couldn't put a nail on the coffin, so to speak, he was unnerved none-the-less. "Keep any eye out, something's up." John's dangling feet hit up against the root he was sitting on, "Already keeping watch, but the forest feels off, yes. Finish getting your silk and we can be on our way." Rawk nodded, he could feel the silk giving way as he started to pull back.

Rawk pulled out his spear with one final yank, jolting his blade upwards a tad in the hopes of nabbing some silk from the spear's tip whilst doing so. Nearly falling on his ass thanks to an overestimation in regards to the resistance the mound had to offer, Rawk stumbled back. The mound slumped into itself thanks to the now open hole, the smell's strength increasing by tenth-folds. Not able to stand the stench, Rawk figured, "To hell with it" , turning heel and climbing back out of the dugout. "Any luck?" John thumbed the hilt of his dagger, shank was a better word for it, looking back in the hole, "You could get a lot of silk from that." Rawk shook his head, sheathing his spear, "No...not worth it, smells really bad in there......probably was an epidemic....we should just go." Heading back from the way he came, Rawk left John to follow, certain he would; however, he didn't. "Umm......Rawk!....it wasn't an epidemic...." John sounded surprised, and when Rawk looked back, he was too. John had backed away from the root, and had made to follow Rawk, his progress indicating he'd taken a quick detour to check the dugout. With his back aimed towards Rawk, he was looking back to the hole where an interesting sight could be found.

Spewing from the dugout, a horde of infant spiders rushed out, swarming around and past John's feet and into the assorted greenery. After a moment of hesitation, John started frantically stomping down on the babies, eliminating an almost inconsequential number of "Children". Rawk unsheathed his spear in a one-handed grasp and jogged his way over to John, grabbing him by the shoulder with his spare hand and pulling him back, "We should probably leave....it wont do anything." John sighed, taking a few steps back, "Butterfly effect......butterfly effect......but yeah, lets, they need to here about this back in Olathe(the name of the starting city)...Spider's really shouldn't be this far down. Gods know how they got down here, the plains is the only way I can imagine, and the thought of migrating spiders seems ludicrous. Regardless," John looked down to the ground, the tide of children long gone, "This is a big problem, silkworms are at risk now."

John glanced back at the dugout one last time, heading off back to the small path they'd trampled into the grass. This time however, it was Rawk's turn to catch the next concerning sight. "JOHN!.....We're not alone!" Rawk swung the spear into a two-handed grasp, readying ye old battle stance. "Oh no..." John turned back to Rawk to find that a fully grown spider had emerged from the dugout, presumably from the mound. Luckily, it was alone, but if not dealt with soon, that would change. Rawk intended to deal with the problem, or try to.
