[F1-SP] «Earning A Living» Glitzy Beginnings

Recommended Posts

"Ok there....." The spider raised its legs in the air, thrashing them about erratically as it chattered in something that could only be incoherent gibberish to Rawk, and vile curses in spider. Rawk watched the spider with a tint of confusion, unsure if was interested in killing him or not; the former was the case. Once it's fit was over, the spider zig zagged towards Rawk with frightening speed, suddenly leaping towards him halfway through the motion. The spider's tactic would've worked swimmingly were it not for the fact that Rawk was an inexperienced fighter, and hadn't learned to trace his opponents movements ahead of time yet. His lag made it so the the spider flung itself into Rawk's spear. Fortunately for the spider, the spear only grazed the upper left of its head. Green blood sprayed out onto Rawk's person, it's corrosive properties partially ruining his clothing, and burning away on some of his exposed skin. Making note of the blood's capabilities, Rawk quickly pivoted around to face the spider once again, ready to reengage. John took a few steps back to the spider, which had landed a yard away from him, the spider didn't notice him.

The spider wasted no time in its next assault, full on charging Rawk the moment it landed. Stabbing the spear towards the spider, Rawk watched with dismay as it hopped to the left, attempting to charge him once again. As per usual, the spider's own miscalculation ruined an otherwise perfect attack, and it sped past Rawk's right leg without leaving a scratch on his person. Caught off-guard by the blunder, Rawk nearly fell onto the trail of green blood that the spider left behind, rebounding from his stumble and re-positioning the tip of his spear. John's fear soon turned to amusement, his hand moving away from the crystal to the pocket; this fight was going to be entertaining, he could tell.

Rawk stepped a foot forward, taking up a defensive formation with the full knowledge that it was wiser to wait for the spider. This time, the spider took it's time, rushing in wasn't doing any good. Hopping in a circular pattern around Rawk with it's previous speed, it hoped to disorientate Rawk, and it did. If it had actually puled off a proper attack, it certainly would've left a painfully large chunk missing from Rawk's hp, but as per usual, it did not. Leaping towards Rawk's outstretched leg to take a bite down on the flesh, it's miscalculation led to it tripping on the aforementioned foot. "How would a spider trip?" one might ask, and surprisingly, the answer is rather simple; it's face slammed against Rawk's foot, and it fell flat on its back, skidding a way's away from Rawk, like one of those spinning top toys. John burst into cackling, leaning up against a tree and holding his gut tight. Rawk merely sighed, and made chase after the spider, hoping to take advantage of its defenselessness.

The spider's bad luck soon turned face, and as Rawk's spear came to bear down on it's underbelly, it flipped up in a flash, dodging Rawk's spear and landing to his left. Groaning in irritation, Rawk swiped his spear towards the spider, only to have it leap at his chest and knock him to the ground. The spear rolled next to Rawk's feet as he played a "serious" version of the "I slap you frantically, you do the same, we both miss" game, furry black legs and human arms flailing about before the spider was eventually thrown off. At this point, John was in stitches. The spider hopped back a few meters and hissed at Rawk, spitting out some projectile spit at him. Fortunately, Rawk rolled away from the brunt of the attack, springing up from the ground and scooping up his spear shortly thereafter. His clothing looked even more tattered from before, and it was clear that some of the spider's blood had gotten on him during the "fight".

Rawk once again, held a defensive position, but the spider wouldn't have any of it. Spitting volley after volley of corrosive spit, it forced Rawk to engage on it's home turf. With surprising skill, Rawk bobbed and weaved through quite literally every shot, dashing towards the spider and raising his spear up to thrust down on it. He could've succeeded in being obscenely bad-ass were it not for the curse that seemed to plague the two. Tripping on himself as the spider readied to dodge, he fell flat onto the path that the spider intended to dodge through, thus, landing on the poor thing. John fell on his ass laughing, making the two feel like buffoons. As before, the two got into a pathetically laughable struggle, Rawk's spear far away from his reach. This skirmish ended with the spider skittering away from under Rawk's person, leaving its pride behind with him.  Pushing off the ground, Rawk himself skittered off to his spear, grabbing it just in time to duck under another ball of spit shot at him.

John's rancid cackling was the perfect backdrop for the battle, but Rawk didn't bother to listen. Not giving the spider any more opportunities to spit at him then necessary, he broke into a sprint towards the "baws". The spider, now knowing full well that getting close to Rawk wasn't going to end well for either involved, kited backwards, spitting at Rawk any chance it got. Just as before, Rawk practically danced around each glob, a surprising feat considering his bulkiness. Regardless, despite how hard he tried, he could never fully close the distance to the point where he could hit the spider. The chase went on for quite a bit, and even the giggling John had to dodge a few stray shots here and there. It got to the point where the battlefield was so riddled with spit, that literally even the most subtle mistake was bound to end in tripping. One of the two were bound to make a a mistake, and fortunately for our hero's, it was the Spider who did. While it did a fairly good job at hopping to the right spot (as it always had it's back turned to where it was heading, in order to shoot at Rawk), its nimbleness turned to clumsiness as it hopped backwards directly into the shaft of the tree, landing on its back with a resounding "THWAK" that probably riled up the spiders resting in the mounds up above. John choked. The spider, phased, fell directly into the dugout, Rawk following via leaping into the dugout himself, thrusting downwards and into the leap's momentum, activating a sword art to ensure the blade didn't break. Dirty water, green blood, and sword art energies sprayed out from the dugout, Rawk's spear embedding through the underside of the spider, and out its back. Rainwater slowly began to fill the the holes carved into the grass by acid.

For all extents and purposes, the spider should've been dead; it was skewered on a spear on both ends; the only thing keeping it alive, and in agonizing pain, was the HP system. Rawk, surprised at this fact himself, tried to shake the spider off his spear, moreso out of mercy than wrath, but to no avail. The spider writhed with all the vigor it could muster, wobbling the spear in Rawk's grasp, and causing him to tumble into the mound of silk that he had messed with prior. The sound of baby spider, silkworm carcass, tattered clothing, and silk mushing together combined with the putrid smell would be enough to make Rawk barf if he was in his real body. The spider landed on its side, the spear impaling it becoming the hypotenuse for its body triangle, forcing the shaft to push up against it's wounds. It's limbs thrashed about frantically, as green blood sprayed literally everywhere; this was ostensibly the messiest battle in all of Sao, both literally and figuratively. John's laughing died down once they went out of sight, but almost the moment he peaked into the dugout, he burst into tears once again, wheezing to catch his breath.

Rawk had had enough, if he wasn't already certain of that fact, he was now; even he got irritated at times. Struggling to pull himself off the heap of grime and silk, his clothing officially ruined, goopy, and stinky, he was privy to quite the show. The spider, still with the spear attached to it, had managed to rise to a stand, and was now trying pop the spear of out it to no avail. It's failure so saddening that it actually managed to appear cute, springing up and down like an erratic toddler with nothing to do. John's voice was a fragment of what it once was, his cracking laughs booming over the sound of even the heavy rain itself. Speaking of which, the rain had now managed to completely fill the holes the duo had made earlier, having increased in severity during the battle; even the dugout was flooded by an impressive 3 inches.

Finally managing to push himself off the dirtied silk, Rawk grumbled a few curses, boots splashing against the concoction of diluted acidic blood and water as he made his way over to unsheathe his spear from the spider. The spider would have none of this, apparently, the handle of the spear thwacking Rawk in the face, and sending him right back down and onto the mound. "OH COME ON!" Rawk conveyed the emotions of the spider perfectly in his fit, writhing in what was effectively his prison. The spider grew even more frantic, the water slowing it's movements considerably. The dugout, at this point, smelled worst than anything Rawk had ever taken a whiff of prior, bits and pieces of the silkworm floating out on the water next to dead spiderbabies; holes having formed in the mound during the struggle.

Rawk once again, had to go through the process of escaping the mound, struggling just as lividly as the spider did. The whole entire battle had been a battle of nonsense, and that pattern didn't end there. The spider had a record of blunders, but it was by no means a fool; it knew when to give up and try something new. It pushed the butt end of the spear against the dirt floor ever so slightly so that the point jutted back out of it's back. Once finished, the spider sprung towards the immobilized Rawk, thrusting his own spear point into his chest. Rawk simply stared at the spider in surprise, the spider chattering in gibberish, incapable of spitting anymore due to the spear in its abdomen. It's green blood oozed out onto Rawk, leaving the front of his shirt in tatters, whistling away his hp bar.

Rawk gripped the spider by it's sides, pulling it, and his own spear, up and off his person. The spear's blade left his chest with a burst of pixels, the spider frantically thrashing its legs. Not wanting to hold the thing any longer than he had to, Rawk heaved the spider up, and flung it with all his strength. The spider landed on its back, the butt of the spear slamming against the ground before it and shooting out of it's abdomen, landing back into Rawk's chest, tip first. The spear harpooned Rawk into the mound, and much to his displeasure, made it harder for him to get off the sticky thing. The spider, upon landing, convulsed for a few moments, the last of it's blood oozing out before it's body faded to pixels, it's blood following it. Rawk, pulling out his spear, used the thing to push himself back up from the mound. Looking back to the mound, Rawk quickly realized that it wouldn't even be worth it to try and loot it, seeing as how ruined it was. Feeling defeated, despite his victory, Rawk trudged through the water, using the spear as a walking stick. Even the ding of a level up didn't provide comfort,  the dirtiness of his spear adding to the sordidness. He couldn't hear a thing from John, who had grown bored of the combat sometime after their falling into the hole. "I'M DONE!" Rawk figured that'd grab John's attention, dropping his spear in the water and kicking it around once he realized it needed a cleaning.

The water didn't help much, but it left the spear in a much better condition than it was in before. Rawk didn't understand how exactly the spear avoided the corrosive effects of the blood, he wasn't one to ask. Looking himself over, he thanked the gods for the set of armor that he'd gotten earlier, and would be certain to equip it once he got the SP he needed from the quest. Speaking of which, John returned from wherever he went off to, "Oh, you're done......that fight, it was an experience for sure; are you ok?"  Rawk could barely see him, but judging from how he sounded, not much had happened on his end of things. "Yeah, yeah, I'm okay....didn't even get anything for my trouble, but, that's life," climbing out of the dugout, Rawk was able to fully appreciate just how much damage the spider had done to the terrain, "Wow..." he was glad that was over. John was more amazed at the state of Rawk's clothing, having not seen the full extent of the damage dealt in the dugout, "Wow......did a number to your clothes, hmm?" Rawk nodded, "Yeah, anyways, lets head off, I'm getting sick and tired of this place." They both agreed, albeit for different reasons.

After tip-toeing their way about the the desolate scene, as to avoid tripping, they were soon back onto their previous path. From there, things went surprisingly smooth considering their previous luck, and Rawk even came across a unit of Silk. Both made occasional small talk, but nothing further than that. As if Lady luck was apologizing for her seemingly malicious motives, the rain let up shortly after the battle, and a sunny warmth soon swarmed over the forest.

"So.....how big would the "den" be? You never said," Rawk was running out of things to think of, and with the boredom starting to set in, any conversation was good conversation; looking to and forth for any signs of residue silk, he listened. "Well, I'd say it's about about half of the city's center.....but that's more of an estimation. Silkworms change dens frequently, since by the time the next generation comes by, the uninhabited silk has already been eaten. But, generally speaking, it's pretty big. Chances are, that's where whatever caused this is holed up, or originated. The spiders had to have been here for a while, otherwise it's simply impossible for them to be here. That can only mean that the silkworms must've disturbed something, and they only seriously mess with the environment when it comes to den-making." At times, Rawk almost forgot that John was a child, or an NPC for that matter. Catching a splotch of silk in his peripheral, Rawk scooped it up with the tip of his spear, storing it. "Either way, we'll get to the bottom of this eventually." Rawk raised a brow at this, "We'll?" John shrugged, "As a race."

Once their path cleared up enough to allow it, Rawk began to idly twirl about his spear. Whilst he couldn't pull off the trick with the speed and elegance that a more seasoned spearwielder had, it passed the time by, whilst being an enjoyable experience. John was no longer with his knife, having accidentally dropped it into a bush of thorns which neither wanted to deal with; probably a good thing in the end. For whatever reason, the cicadas decided to return to their buzzing, drowning out the other stray chirps, buzzes, and other sounds they'd been hearing earlier.

The two of them passed another player who was fighting two wolves; his green health bar combined with how easily he controlled the wolves seemed to indicate that he had things under control, but Rawk still offered to help, only to get shot down. The fellow was clad in a green undershirt and white pants, a bandanna wrapped about the blond hair which was dyed, and a dagger clasped tightly in his hand; he was a green player. The two only watched him for a few moments before moving on, the sounds of pixels bursting shortly following their departure. They would bump into the fellow shortly thereafter, harvesting a berry bush. Nothing but the brief "hello" was imparted between the two "parties".

"Hey, wait," Rawk slowed to a stop, bringing up his menu with the tap of a finger. "Yeah? What is it?" John had found a new branch to mess around with, this one going more along the line's of "Staff", easily towering over it's owner. "I think I might be able to get out of these rags!" Rawk had always assumed one required the appropriate skill to wear armor, but if that was true, then he probably wouldn't be able to use his spear. The bugs and whatnot of the forest had began to grow irksome, and having holes in one's clothing wasn't a remedy whatsoever. After scrolling through the interface a tad, he inwardly cheered when he saw the "equip" button was accessible; Rawk could say farewell to those nasty rag's, and hello to some comfy leather Armor!

Wolf-hide armor (Good/Leather)~ Leather armor made primarily from the pelt of a brown wolf. As most armor's of this sort go, the head is appropriately used as a headdress, the lower jaw removed. The front paws are tied together and draped under the neck, a bracelet of teeth from the lower jaw finding itself on the neck.  In the middle of the necklace's string, a misshapen tooth finds it's home, black and brown with grime that turns to white at it's tip, and considerably larger than it's compatriots, the tooth stands out as a curved centerpiece. The wolf's pelt continues to go down the back of its owner, fastened tight to the torso through use of a few leather straps. On the front, pieces of leather armor long past their use have been meshed and stitched together to form a sturdy armor, the straps keeping it tight. Brown legging's and the usual boots adorn the bottom of this armor, and the shoulder-pads are made of the upper jaw's of two separate wolves. Leather gloves with teeth fastened to their knuckles ensure that the user is ready for anything. This armor is at best, shoddy, and it's makeshift component's paint pictures about the situation of those who use it. Rawk's sheath is now fastened to his back by one of the straps.

"Seems Barbaric," John noted, completely unphased by the instantaneous clothing change. Rawk looked himself over as best as he could. and was forced to agree. Not exactly the look he was aiming for, but it would do; almost anything was better than what remained of his basic clothing, which was quickly discarded; not even worth a penny.

Rawk never felt so relived before, the pleasures of even clunky armor of shoddy make was enough to make him ecstatic. The painfully itchy bug bites, the irritating scrape of leave's, the lingering putrid smell along with the wet feeling that came with it, all gone and solved; it was utter bliss, not to repeat myself. Rawk hummed a merry tune as they marched along, and near it's end, they came across a merry surprise. Randomly, in the middle of the forest, sat a bag labeled, "Crafting Feathers"  about the size of an infant. The two looked at each other, already certain the other thought it was a trap. However, despite all their precaution, and attempts to trigger whatever it might've been, they saw no sign of a trap, and eventually, John had the gal to simply pick up the bag. Strangely enough, nothing happened when he did, so, out of the kindness of his heart, John tossed Rawk the bag. Another for the loot pile, it would seem.

They came across the bandanna wearing fellow once again, this time, casually munching away into his sandwich. From the small conversation that popped up between the three, Rawk got the distinct impression that he was one of those mellow individual's who were suspect to fits of rage over the strangest things. That,  however, was merely a hunch, and Rawk tried not to be presumptuous about others. Funnily enough, the bandanna fellow go the same impression of Rawk. They said their farewells once the fellow activated his teleportation crystal, leaving the duo to continue onward. Rawk started whistling again.

The two of them stared blankly at the next oddity they found, doubtlessly from the same person, or quest, responsible for the first bag. Before them sat another bag, this one labeled "Bag-o Crafting Gold"; because of its name alone, they almost didn't touch it. Who left gold out in the woods? The mere idea was something only a prankster could come up with. "At this rate, we're probably going to find another bag, and that'll be boogy trapped; this one? Probably isn't. It's all about the slow set up," John reasoned, even his childish bravery suspect to suspicion. That reason, despite how weak, was enough to entice Rawk to reluctantly approach the bag, after checking for traps as judiciously as he could, of course. Lo' and behold, the bag wasn't rigged, and did indeed hold gold within. Rawk offered a chunk to John, but the boy refused, claiming, "He wouldn't know what to do with it."; Rawk honestly didn't know either, he was setting up to be a Tailor, not a smith.
