The Magic of Science!

alchemy-lab-by-kemi-neko.thumb.jpg.fab4f

A sign on the door to the storefront reads, "Welcome to The Magic of Science! On today's menu, we have science, science, and MORE SCIENCE!"

Should you choose to enter, despite the horrible joke on the sign, you would be greeted by the pleasant smell of earl grey tea and the warmth of a fire by the bar, as a small bell goes off above the door, signaling your arrival. Tea is always available upon request, and the Shopkeep has a variety of teas in stock to give you a nice pick of tastes (sorry, no stat boosts from the tea!). As you warm your frozen boots by the fire, you might happen to notice a bunch of potions, bottles, doodads and scientific looking tools throughout the store. Unless Emerath hasn't been busy at all, then you would most likely just see a bunch of empty shelves!

The Shopkeep himself, Emerath, seems nice enough, but he will often greet you with a bit of a cold demeanor at first for taking him away from his experiments. But when he realizes that you plan on spending money (and don't just plan on drinking all of his tea!) he'll warm up and start showing you around. If you're interested in Alchemy, he may even be willing to show you a thing or two in the art.

A glass display box with a red cushion inside sits in a place of honor in the middle of the shop on an ornate wooden pedestal.

Emerath wiped the sweat from his brow as he finished placing the final touches on his brand new store. But as he looked around, he realized that the place was empty! Though, he should've expected that. That just means it was time to make some things! So Emerath quickly made his way down the stairs, and pushed into the back room that contained all the basic supplies given to him by the NPC. Some potion bottles, a mortar and pestle, and some basic Bunsen burners and other science doodads that makes the potions happen. Emerath pulled out the Boar's Blood he had gotten on one of his adventures, and poured it into one of the large bottles. He began to heat it up, while turning some knobs and pouring in some water as a base. He experimented and played with a few other chemicals, and soon the potion turned a bright green. He grabbed his tongs and pulled the bottle from the holder with delight.

He took a sampling of it in a small vial, once it had cooled. He took a drink and suddenly felt like he could laps around the building and not even break a sweat. "A stamina potion! Perfect!"

Delighted by his success, Emerath pressed on with his crafting, and decided this time to use one of the Boar Tusks in his potion. He ground it up in the mortar and pestle into a fine dust, and poured the dust into one of the bottles and added water as a base. He went a bit more crazy this time with his experimenting, adding in a dash of this, and a dash of that. When he took a step back, it hadn't changed, despite heat nor chemicals. Emerath thought that was odd. So, like any good scientist, he poured even more things in, until the bottle began to violently bubble. With a sudden panic, Emerath shoved a cork stopper into the bottle. One key thing Emerath seemed to have forgotten however, is that you don't cork something that desperately needs to escape. As Emerath leaned in, the bottle suddenly blew up in his face and Emerath fell backwards with a scream, his HP bar decreasing into the yellow.

He huffed as he stood up, trying his best to wipe off the chemicals with a nearby towel. He then promptly decided it would be best to take a bath and have a nap to heal. But not before placing the actually successful potion on the shelf!

Second Day on the Job (2 Crafts)

Emerath had skipped a day of adventuring, hoping that some adventurer would wander into his shop. It was no luck. He needed to get out there and advertise! But... he was bad at that. He wasn't even sure he should be running a shop, considering how bad he could be at interacting with people. He was hopeful though. Hopeful and bored. To the point that he was now sitting upside-down in one of his chairs as he watched some rats scurry across his almost empty shelves.

He was happy though. He looked at his little bubbling potion that he had labeled "Five Hour Stamina" with glee. He happily rolled backwards out of his chair, "Well, looks like no customers so far today. Maybe I can stock the shelves a bit more!"

Craft 1:

Emerath crossed the threshold into his lab and looked at all the glass bottles. He could make something good with these. He could feel it. These simple little devices that looked like no more than a child's chemistry set. He could do something here. So he set to work. He poured a vial of boar's blood into a bottle of water and began to heat it up. It worked last time, why not this time? He threw in a different variety of chemicals to try to produce a different result than last time, and when the potion turned blue, he was excited. He pulled it out with tongs and gave it a sniff. Didn't smell like anything special. He poured the result into a small sample vial, and when it cooled he drank some.

"Tastes like water. Did I just entirely boil the blood out of this potion? Ugh." He poured the "potion" into a nearby waste container and cleaned out the bottle. "So much for that idea." But then he looked to the little green bubbling potion on the shelf, just in sight of his lab. And it gave him hope.

Emerath was determined, and he would make something good with that determination. He remembered the sapling that he had picked while adventuring with Teion, and decided to make good use of it. He had remembered the examination, that it was best used as a "potion spice". So he put some water in a bottle as a base, threw in some chemicals, a splash of this, a dash of that, and then grabbed the grater and grated some of the root into the potion. Once done, it appeared that he was out of usable parts of the roots and tossed it in the waste container. He had just turned back when he saw the potion beginning to bubble over. He quickly ran over, freaking out, but was sent backwards again by a giant puff of an explosion, sending smoke everywhere throughout the lab.

Emerath coughed, and made his way to a window to open it up, even though he really didn't want to let in the cold air. He needed to clear the smoke. He opened the shutters and snow began to blow in through the window, but the smoke quickly made its way outside to his relief. Once it had dissipated, Emerath turned and saw a bottle full of a sparkling golden liquid. He rushed over and looked at it in wonder. "Did... did I make this?!" He couldn't believe it. He almost didn't want to touch it for fear that it wasn't real. He quickly pinched himself. "Ouch!" he shouted, "Nope, not a dream." He turned off the heater and let it cool off, just staring at the bottle in wonder for a while.

Third Day on the Job (2 Crafts)

Running an empty shop was actually quite boring, in all honesty. He had taken some time off for himself to go buy a suit in a nice tailor's shop in a lower floor, though in all honesty he had forgotten the name and the name of the shopkeep entirely. He had gone in just for the suit, been as polite as necessary, and gotten out of there. He never was very good with people. But he was certain he could be if money was involved.

He looked over at the golden sparkling potion that he had placed in a display box in the center of the shop. It glittered in the light of one of the windows near the roof at the top of a tall shelf. He sighed. He actually had wanted to use his first health potion on himself, but seeing as he also wanted to run a successful business, he thought it would be better to put it as a prized item. Which it was. HP was a valuable commodity, and not to be taken lightly in a game where you could actually die. He hoped that someone would come in soon to at least look at it. He'd feel better then.

Wanting to get more products on the shelves, and practice his craft, he pushed himself from his chair, put his tea down, and went to go make himself some potions.

Craft 1:

  • ID: 30255
  • CD: 9

Emerath decided to try the Boar's Tusk again, and see if he could turn that fine white powder into something without making it explode and nearly kill him. He was determined as he crushed the tusk in his mortar and pestle and then poured it into a bottle of water. He let it heat up for a while, admiring how the tusk reacted to heat. And by that it's meant that it didn't do much. Emerath was starting to get a bit of a feel for what chemicals did what, and how to achieve results at this point, and so he tried a dash of some grey chemical and sprinkled in a bit of golden powder. There was a puff as the reaction took place, and steam rose from the bottle in a quick, angry rush. But then, the bottle almost entirely settled down. No bubbles, no shaking. Just a flat, white potion, with what looked like a cloud floating around in and out of the bottle. Emerath smiled at another success.

Craft 2:

  • ID: 30256
  • CD: 9

Emerath felt good. He felt like he was starting to get the hang of this potion making thing. He hardly even thought a lot about this next one. He had an idea of what he wanted, and was starting to see how he got results. He had some dull brown grass that he had gotten from one of the boars. When examined it said, "Dead Hill Grass: Now that the grass is dead, perhaps it can be used to make something?" He supposed that the deadness of the grass gave it medicinal properties, and that's what he was working with. Emerath mixed the grass into boiling water and watched as it dissolved into a nice brown slosh. He then poured in a bit of a red chemical and some of a blue, letting it turn the potion into a nice purple as he swirled it around. The brown slosh seemed to eat these up, and was hungry for even more, bubbling furiously. Emerath took a chance and threw in a dash of brown powder to get the result he wanted and suddenly the potion gave what sounded like a burping sound and a small roar as it settled down to a light bubble in the heat.

Emerath took a step back, and turned the heat off for both potions. "A surprisingly successful day. I'll take it." He let the bottles cool, and prepared them for sale, and then took them to the shelf.

Day Four (2 Crafts)

Emerath was sitting upside down in his chair again. Completely unprofessional for a shopkeep he always told himself. What if someone walked into the store? Emerath didn't care. It had been very quiet so far, and he just figured it would be him and his potions, as usual. He was writing up some labels for potion ideas, and he was getting pretty good at clever names and interesting potion labels. He especially hoped this would draw in the crowd that was more interested in medicinal effects that didn't just provide stat bonuses. Maybe someday.

After writing his latest potion labels, he stored them in a nice box by the bar that held many of his writings and scribbles, and even a few crumpled up bad apples that were just good enough to not throw away. Just in case he ever decided to improve upon them. He did a backwards roll from his chair, and thought it was time to do his nightly potion crafting as the sun started to set.

Craft 1:

  • ID: 30432
  • CD: 7 (Bad Item)
  • LD: 19 (Material Salvaged)

Emerath cracked his fingers as he walked into his lab, ready for another night of success. He had some interesting new stuff he wanted to try tonight, and he had a good feeling. He was actually quite keen on making another Golden Heart, with some changes. So he grabbed some of the Hill Root and got to work. He tried a few different chemicals than he had originally, trying to get a different result based on what he knew. The result produced nothing like that golden explosion. Instead resulting in a very real explosion that actually destroyed one of his glass bottles. Emerath sighed, but at least he had learned from the experience. Not only that, but he found golden flecks of the Hill Root still stuck to some of the larger glass pieces. Maybe I can reuse these?

Craft 2:

  • ID: 30434
  • CD: 2 (Failure)

Emerath decided to tackle the problem from a different direction. He actually tried using the entire gold flecked glass pieces in the new concoction, attempting to heat up the glass to be so hot that it melted, and could be used to form some sort of medicinal property. This was, in actuality a completelyl horrible idea. See, what Emerath forgot is that he was using a glass bottle to heat up the glass shards to a point of melting. This resulted in the entire glass bottle melting. This resulted in not only potion failure, but also a loss of some equipment.

Emerath moped back into the center area of his shop, and plopped himself down in his chair. He slowly opened the drawer where his labels were, and started to write some more. On one he scratched out, "Certain types of experimentation are bad, and should never be performed. Lesson learned."

  • 2 weeks later...

Out of the blue, a certain blonde figure enters the shop and after a quick glance through the display she points towards the item in the center of attention and asks in a crystalline voice that lightly echoes through the shop. "Hello there, I'd like to purchase that 'Golden Heart' and place a order for healing crystals." she takes a second to inhale and with a smile continues. It smells so good, it's been a while since I had some proper English tea, mind if I have some?" Her eyes looking at the clerk that seemed busy with his experiments. A normal sight among alchemists, her friend used to be like this in his white lab coat.

Emerath had, thankfully, not been sitting upside down in his chair for once when an actual customer made their way into the shop. It was a rather pretty blonde haired woman, and Emerath was a mixture of absolutely elated at his first customer, and absolutely nervous at his first customer. He listened to the woman's request, and gave a rather large smile at the thought of someone wishing to purchase his prized display, and repeat business! The thought was a great one and he couldn't help but grin.

When the woman had finished speaking, he fumbled a bit as he looked over at the tea set he had waiting on the bar, and said, "O-oh, yes, tea!" He made his way over to it, and clumsily put together a cup and saucer and poured some tea into the cup. He placed it on the bar near to the Golden Heart display and offered some cream and sugar alongside it with a small spoon.

When done with that service, he made his way to the Golden Heart and produced a small silver key, which fit into a small keyhole in the pedestal beneath the glass display. He turned and with a light click the glass case was released from the pedestal. He picked it up by the red pillow the potion sat on, so as not to risk any accidental droppings, and held the potion out for Ariel to admire, horribly drawn golden heart with a smiley face and all. "It's all yours for either 1000 Col or 5 materials, mi'lady."

He then nodded with his head over to a small box with some drawers, the bottom of which was sticking out and appeared to have some paper inside. There was also ink and quill for writing. "After the purchase has been decided, you are welcome to make any orders using the forms in the box. Do bear in mind that I'm not quite skilled enough to make crystals, but I'll get there, and I'll try to make the orders as soon as I can!"

The blonde gladly accepted the tea and continued to listen to the clerk's explanation. She was impressed by the attention he put into details, from the glass frame to the small silver key. The item in question had quite a amusing design that almost got a light chuckle out of her. When presented with the options of payment she nodded and with a couple of elegant movements with her right hand, she materialized a small pouch containing exactly 5 mats and 250 col which she left on the counter.

"I'll also like to purchase that potion...'Lion's Courage'. It seems only fitting as my name is Ariel but I'm also known as 'The Crowned Lion'."

After picking up the items, Ariel takes several sheets of paper and completes the forms. She then hands them to the uprising alchemist with a smile.

"I'll buy a total of 5 to 10 of this items, depending on their quality. Basically I need healing crystals of any kind, as a tailor I know its easy to cross the lower ranks of the job so I expect that you'll be able to craft crystal in no time. PM me when you have one made and I'll come to buy it. What do you say? Are you willing to become my exclusive provider for a short while?"

Emerath was couldn't help but turn a light shade of pink at the thought of being someone's provider, especially this lovely woman's. Despite that Emerath was very awkward around women, and well, people in general, he couldn't help but feel that he could at least do this much. Emerath gave a smile and a nod as he placed the red cushion with the potion still on it back on the pedestal for now before accepting the papers and filing them into one of the other drawers of the box for review and posting in his lab later.

He quickly scurried over to the shelf holding the good quality potions and pulled down the brown slow bubbling potion. He placed it on the red cushion with the Golden Heart and then looked to the payment on the bar. He gave a nod to it, but then scratched his chin, trying to remember the prices he had posted. He had actually recently changed them, and so he turned back to Ariel, "Only 25 Col for the Lion's Courage," he said, and then gave her a light bow, "and I appreciate your belief in me. I promise that I will learn how to make crystals and master the art so that you shall have all you need!"

Getting Back on the Horse (2 Crafts):

  • ID: 32603
  • CD: 2 (Failure)

Emerath figured it might be time to finally start crafting again, now that he had had an actual customer. He needed to craft, even if it was a failure, he needed to practice. He made his way to the lab, and realized that he still hadn't cleaned up the mess from the last time he sabotaged himself. He groaned as he pushed the stuff off the workbench, and this seemed just enough to push the durability of the items completely to zero as they exploded into a flurry of pixels. Emerath shook his head, and decided to stick to what he knew. He grabbed the golden root and got to work. He threw some in, mixed some chemicals and prayed for success, but none came this time. He dumped out the failure and would not let himself get discouraged.

  • ID: 32610
  • CD: 5 (Bad Item)
  • LD: 16 (Salvaged!)

Emerath was determined at this point to get something else out of the golden root that he had used to make his perfect potion. It was a mission. He had to replicate that success. And next time, he would write down what he did rather than just throwing things together. That was it! Notekeeping! Emerath dashed out to the box that held his papers and then came back with a bunch. He took his ink and quill and began to scribble notes about the golden Hill Root. As he threw it in, and then began to mix in other chemicals, he found that while he wasn't successful, he had managed to make a base for another potion. He would take that as a win.

Emerath had decided that taking notes was the best idea he had in a long time. He sat in his lab and considered how certain things mixed together, referenced his notes for reactions, and thought best how he might try out his experiments today. The Hill Root was his best starting point, and he had learned to gather quite a bit of that where he could. He was enjoying the thought that with his notes, he would eventually be able to make Golden Hearts on demand, once he could figure out how to get the rarer and rarer Hill Root in bulk. That would come in time, though, for now, it was time to craft.

Emerath kept his notes close as he mixed, heated, and stirred everything together. He would mix in this, take notes, try a different reaction. He wasn't all that successful until the very end, when he mixed the Hill Root base that he had made the day before in with some potent berries. The result was unexpected, but welcome, as Emerath realized that he had made a basic healing potion. "Perfect!" he happily exclaimed as he clapped his hands together, despite that the potion was not perfect. It was actually uncommon. But we don't need to tell Emerath that.

As i walk into the shop in a rther big hurry i quickly notice the shop owner has a hp crystal already made. Sadly it wasnt a rare or perfect like i wanted, but at this point i was in too much of a hurry to care. I walked up and called into the shop "hey!im here to buy the "red heart" i see you have in stock, ima pay in mats if thats alright' i say before waiting for a response, i was in a hurry as i really wanted to begin the quest but really needed a healing crystal just in case.

((OOC: Please make note that it is a potion, not a crystal. That is a very important difference as it would take your character one turn of drinking the potion to use it and heal. Emerath is not of a proper rank to make crystals at this time.))

Emerath had been up on a ladder, placing the new potion on the shelf that he had just made when a customer entered the shop, seemingly incredibly eager to buy that same potion. "Woah now, Speedy, let me just get down from this ladder." Emerath made his way down and went over to the customer with the potion still in his hand. In a few button presses of his menu, it disappeared into his inventory, and Emerath held his hand out to the man to shake, "I'm Emerath, it's nice to meet you, and welcome to my shop. The potion will be two materials." Emerath selected the man's name and brought up a trade window, dropping the potion in and waiting for the mats as payment.

I didnt mean to seem as if i was ruhing him although i know it seemed  like it, but i was in a hurry anyway so i ignored it.

((OOC: It's fine. I just didn't want you getting in trouble with a mod is all, for thinking an item was the wrong thing. (: ))

Emerath smiled at the tip, and said, "Well, I appreciate that. Tips are always welcome." Emerath pressed the "Accept Trade" button as Astopheric had done and watched as the items swapped places. He pulled mats out of his inventory and looked at each one in turn, "Good stuff. Hopefully I can make even more potions and make it worth your while to come visit me again. Thanks for stopping by today!" Emerath gave a bow of thanks to Astropheric for his business.

Emerath walked into his lab after Astropheric made his exit with a bit of a spring in his step and a whistle on his lips. He was happy that he had hopefully helped another player survive with the use of his potions and that drove him to make even more. Emerath gathered up his notes. He could feel that he was close to figuring out the secret to the Golden Heart. He could feel it in his bones. He would make the golden sparkling potion again!

And so, he went to work. He mixed this, and crushed up that, all the while trying new things with the Hill Root to get the success he so desired. He wasn't very successful the first couple of times, but he made sure to keep track of it in his notes. And then it happened. Emerath thought back to the day he had made that fateful potion. He thought long and hard about what he did, and then he remembered. "OH! I mix the blue, THEN the red, let it heat to a certain temperature, and then put the Hill Root in!" He tried this, and sure enough, he achieved the result he was looking for, despite that it, once again, filled his lab up with smoke. But that was fine, the Golden Heart was worth it. Emerath held the sparkling golden potion up in the air with pride.

And that was when he turned around, and realized that he was out of Hill Root.

Emerath was feeling good today. He had made the Golden Heart, but he just wasn't sure how he was going to get more Hill Root. At best, the stuff seemed rare, and despite that he had figured out the trick to making it, that would mean he would need more materials to do so. He gave a bit of a sigh as he went into his lab to work on the materials that he did have. Who knows? Perhaps he'd get lucky and find another way to make the Golden Heart. This was an MMO after all, there had to be other alternate means of potentially doing so. Regardless though, Emerath set to work. He played around and took notes on each of his crafts, but at the end of it, it was just a bunch of basic stuff. Medicine and other run of the mill things that gave no actual stat bonuses or heals. Emerath sighed, but tomorrow is another day.
